However, a mysterious tragedy struck the peaceful town, and most of its residents completely vanished. Hallfein became a restricted area, and access was forbidden to all except investigators from the capital. Years passed, and the restrictions were eventually lifted, after which plans to restore the town were put together. Taking this opportunity, a young man and woman follow their hearts and return to Hallfein after being forced to leave it so long ago; the young woman wanting to restore the shop previously run by her missing grandfather, and the young man hoping to learn more about the items left to him by his departed father. They both also seek to learn why the town's residents vanished that day. The two will meet and set out on a journey in search of the truth together. However, neither could imagine just what would await them on that journey. Expand

If it isn’t already clear enough by this point, Atelier Resleria is an excellent RPG. From battle system to alchemy to multiple other subsystems, everything seemed superbly planned and polished. No previous experience with the Atelier series is necessary to enjoy all this game has to offer, but returning fans will receive plenty of nostalgic dopamine hits. This is a game that shows how a familiar series can be both welcoming to newcomers and deeply rewarding for long-time fans. The developers have successfully crafted a title that honors its legacy while forging a new, promising path forward.

If you have a big heart, love cuteness, and want to be immersed in a bubbly game world teeming with upstanding welcoming characters then Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian is an RPG that you have to play even if it can be a bit simple gameplay-wise.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian surprised me with how confidently it balances tradition and evolution, offering one of the most thoughtfully built entries in the franchise to date. While some systems remain overly rigid, the expanded narrative scope, satisfying synthesis, and nuanced protagonists make it a rewarding return for longtime fans, and a solid entry point for newcomers.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist and The White Guardian leans into the old staples that the franchise sustained itself on, focusing on turn-based combat and crafting to win the day. Several elements take a step back from what recent titles in the franchise have done, instead focusing more on farming instead of exploring. It's still about alchemy, but getting to the alchemy is more repetition and less discovery. For longtime fans of the series, the Atelier formula is still there for a good time. With that said, newer fans may recoil a bit if they first jumped into the franchise alongside Ryza, Sophie, and Yumia.

Overall, while Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian doesn’t provide a shockingly different or awe-inspiring experience, it is still a respectable and enjoyable entry in the Atelier series.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian never once feels like it was developed beyond the boardroom meeting of its conception. It fails to venture beyond the foundations that the series has set for itself or delve into the world of innovation and experimentation that the series is known for. Superfans of the series may find something to love here, but for those who don’t care to dig that deep, they will find a mish-mash of boring dungeons, a bland story, mind-numbing levels of repetition, and a plethora of design shortcomings in a setting that requires prior knowledge of the world.
