While less accessible to newcomers and with some issues, such as the overly simplified synthesis system, if you've been a fan of Gust's work with the franchise for roughly a decade, this game will warm your heart.

A lowered scope and lowered stakes return the franchise to a comfortable position, and that’s not a bad thing per se. It serves as a look back on the franchise. After taking a wild turn on the mobile gacha path, a step back was necessary to recenter the series and continue moving forward with the two Atelier pillars. Ultimately, the game feels like a greatest hits album that is missing a couple of those unique B-sides that stood out and tested the limits of the genre. Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian is a fantastic course correction and follow-up to the gacha, sure to appease series veterans, and an excellent starting point for new players to find their footing with the series.

If you have a big heart, love cuteness, and want to be immersed in a bubbly game world teeming with upstanding welcoming characters then Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian is an RPG that you have to play even if it can be a bit simple gameplay-wise.

Continuing the Atelier Resleriana series in this form after pulling the plug on Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator is a fitting decision. It's a delightful Atelier game, peppered with characters from previous installments.

Its title may be a mouthful, but Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian is an excellent entry into the long-running Atelier series. Series fans will love the wealth of familiar faces that pop up, and JRPG fans will love its tight story, its fun combat and its varied gameplay.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian doesn't exactly carve out it's own path - you can tell it's part of a bigger picture, and it's a shame that bigger picture is inaccessible due to the fleeting nature of gacha games. Still, taken on its own, this is an incredibly fun Atelier entry with an exciting new shopkeeping system that I hope is a major and bigger focus in future entries.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & The White Guardian is a stellar entry in the series as it provides a solid gameplay loop, a fun battle system and gorgeous visuals to boot. Despite the cameo characters from past entries being present, the main storyline is still engaging and focuses on the two protagonists well. While Slade is one-note, Rias is a delightful hero to follow once you get used to her higher pitch in tone. The lack of English voice acting is disappointing, but the Japanese performances are great and fit the characters well. While there are a few issues, like the ridiculous boss battle in Chapter 6 and the lack of important information in some aspects of the game, it's an experience that will keep you hooked for hours upon hours.

Atelier Resleriana: The Red Alchemist & the White Guardian surprised me with how confidently it balances tradition and evolution, offering one of the most thoughtfully built entries in the franchise to date. While some systems remain overly rigid, the expanded narrative scope, satisfying synthesis, and nuanced protagonists make it a rewarding return for longtime fans, and a solid entry point for newcomers.

Atelier Reseleria combines the typical JRPG Atelier formula with small management elements in the form of a shop and other extras to help the protagonists rebuild their hometown. Thanks to numerous cameos from other Atelier protagonists, the game feels like a magical class reunion that doesn't overdo it but plays pleasantly.
