This game is very cool It fixed many of the problems destiny had my only small complaint is that becoming rouge in the dark zone is not really worth it so it kinda takes away the the whole pvp part but the game is still very fun and I look forward to becoming lvl 30 would rate a 9.5 but I am leaning towards a ten!

A lot of the early reviewers here seem to have not taken the time to actually play past the beginning of the game. This game is far from original, but draws upon what makes many other games great. As a former destiny player, I have been looking for something like this. The dark zone alone justifies the cost, and the story is better than expected.

There are a few places that need improvement though: comparing weapons should also include DPS without any attached mods - comparing currently equipped, modded weapon with a newly found un-modded one is meaningless. There are a few technical glitches - I got stuck in a corner behind a door, had to fast-travel to get out the trap ;), and sometimes in single player I hear (for fractions of a second) what seems to be voices of other players.

Although there are a few glitches in the game, it is to be expected but updates will solve these issues. While playing this game, I actually feel like a jason bourne type of agent. This is a deep mmo shooter rpg with a lot of content, unlockables, outfits, mods, weapon types, leveling skills.
The main thing that I love about it, is that it is a tactical shooter. Spray and pray will not help you. You need to use your surroundings to your advantage and there are different ways to conquer your foes. You can climb your way up on scaffoldings and shoot from above. If you are in a team of players/npcs you can also flank your enemy while your allies draw aggro. It's very similar to gears of war in that sense.
The only thing that dissapoints me with this game is the character customisation at the start. It is very limited for an rpg game. You have a few customised faces, and just a few hairstyles and facial hair types. The tattoos are only on the neck and the war paints are basic. You can't even choose your body type (I wanted to be a muscle bound guy). Secondly, You have these emoticon things (applaud, salute, clap, ask for help and jumping jacks). Now why the hell would you have jumping jacks?! Couldn't we have something cool like pushups??
Anyway, the game is still in its infancy and knowing ubisoft, there will be plenty of updates and dls.
My advice to you is get the game. It's worth every penny

Tom Clancy's The Division is representative of the future potential of hybrid MMO/single player games. You can play as a loner seeking to complete the 25-30 hour diverse main missions and enjoy the best realized story I've ever experienced in an MMO title.

Yet, I recommend that most players find a friend or two to get the most out of the game. Adding party members increases enemy numbers and intelligence. A coordinated party will have much more success in Dark Zone PVP areas where every other human being is met with extreme caution. In addition, multiple party members allow individuals to specialize their stats for a specific role using the surprisingly deep RPG customization. Loot and experience are individual, so there is no worry about getting less experience or loot while in a party.

Customization runs very deep in The Division. Weapons have several tiers and several levels. A more rare item may have unique abilities that are unlocked based upon your player stats. In addition, each weapon has a unique number of mod slots that allow you to further customize the stability, damage, critical hit chances, and zoom. Armor is similarly varied. Armor number is not necessarily the only thing you want to consider when equipping new pieces. Each piece of armor (chest, mask, gloves, holster, backpack, knee pads) gives a different stat boost (guns(attack), stamina(health), and technology (abilities). If playing in a group as a specific role, you may want the armor that gives you the best skill upgrade, not purely the one with the highest armor rating. Armor can also have mod slots that allow for further customization. As you upgrade your base of operations you'll unlock a crafting table to make your own gear and crafting items and a recalibration which can be used to gamble on a random selection of stat buffs for armor.

Your character customization includes abilities (must be activated), talents (must be equipped), and perks (passive). Within the abilities, you can unlock further customization. For example, a sentry turret can be altered to mark enemies, shock and temporarily paralyze enemies, or shoot fire. You can also outfit your character in various ways for a fun look. Choose between various types and colors of hats, shirts, pants, coats, scarves, and shoes. Color coordinating with party members can also be useful for identification in the Dark Zone.

The environment of the game is outstanding. As a person who previously lived in New York City, I found myself stopping to admire the landmarks I recognized and the familiarity it brought to the game. The desolate landscape of a cold and unforgiving city in the middle of winter is represented perfectly. All around you remnants of a society gone past remain. Sick citizens cough, cry, and plead for help. The game captures what a pandemic in a major center like New York City could do. The Division is by no means a small game, but it is somewhat disappointing key areas like Central Park and Harlem are not accessible in the current game. In addition, there's several boroughs left untouched. Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx would be great for further exploration. Imagine fighting through waves of enemies in Yankee Stadium or Citi Field. Fingers crossed for expansions.

The endgame causes a slight slowdown in gameplay. Yet, this should be expected after indulging in the 25-30 marathon of main story missions and getting to the main level cap. For a game that is not subscription nor microtransaction based, this is more than acceptable. However, if you do find yourself wanting more there are various side missions, encounter missions, a separate Dark Zone level cap, various collectibles to give you story context, base upgrades, loot, and daily missions to keep you and your friends very busy. Trophies/Achievements and UPlay points give nice incentive to replay story missions on Hard difficulty as well. In addition, there are clear statements of various missions and events such as "incursions" coming soon in free updates.

In summation, Tom Clancy's The Division is a masterpiece in fun team mechanics, hybrid gameplay, and deep customization. The game draws many comparisons to Destiny. It's not surprising seeing how few of these types of games currently exist. However, the launch version of Destiny felt very empty, lacked storytelling, and had bare bones customization and enemy variation. The Division does not suffer from any of these shortcomings. Those looking for a great 30 hours of single player fun or countless hours of coop fun with friends, look no further than The Division.

Speaking of team, this is a MMOish type of game so the idea of working as a team such as playing the best possible roles for the team, doing call outs and overall concentrating on the single goal of completing the mission is very fun and important to mention because to be honest, this game is meant to be played with your buddies. However, single player is fine but you would be having a way better experience playing with friends as you can explore the DZ without the anxiety of going solo. Overall, this game is a must buy for anyone looking to play with friends, but in a more in-depth way such as the reasons I stated above. Although this is a personal gripe I felt that the controls were a little clunky from the begginning, however one gets use to it after playing for the game for a while. 9/10 for me. Expand

One thing I've learned from MetaCritic is that you never should judge a game by it's scores. Most of the great games I enjoyed were rated around a 7.

Hell, even my girlfriend bought this game to play it with me. And she also enjoys it fully, grinding, loot, side ops, fun story and amazing graphics in openworld. What's more fun standing together in a part of New York, behind her giving her cover, headshots, while she empties her machinegun?!

I'm a late comer that just picked up the game, and it is really great! I was playing Destiny 1 and 2 obsessively over the last few years and finally got fed up with all of Destiny short comings. The Division is similar as far as being a loot casing RPG game, except it gets it right on so many different levels. If you haven't tried The Division and like this genre of game, get it!

I would say the number one drawback is that the majority of weapons and builds in the game are rather useless and at endgame you see people using only a couple of different weapons (The House, Lightweight M4/LVOA-C mostly) and builds (Nomad/Pred in PvP, Striker/Lonestar in PvE, Reclaimer's are always prevalent). The thing is, this is every game ever though. There are always a few skills or weapons a cut above the rest and I would say The Division has done as good of a job for permitting as much creativity in builds as is possible. There are endless hybrid builds you can make use of, some of which are very creative and very effective, and there is a lot of grinding to be done. Expand

Well designed open world, fantastic attention to detail, enjoyable cooperative play and a sense of scale that I haven't seen in many games. The Division brings a lot of good things to the table. I wish some of the single player wasn't quite as repetitive, but overall it's a fantastic game.

With so much to do from day one, it will take most players weeks to max out their characters and, even if they do max out quickly, there's the very competitive Dark Zone where you and your friends can try to fight for more impressive gear. While players might find the story a bit distant for the first several hours of gameplay, knocking out main story missions and engaging in bits of filler story scattered throughout Manhattan will quickly begin to paint a picture. Of course, players that stray a bit might find themselves trying to remember why they're out doing some seemingly-random tasks. The biggest opportunities for improvement lie in The Division's cover system, which usually functions well but has a few quirky glitches now and then that might frustrate you in a moment of combat. Where Destiny wants you to replay every single mission over and over to push forward as a player, The Division is built to be progressed through a story that isn't told through heavy repetitive missions. In fact, you'll never be encouraged to replay a mission unless you found it fun or need to recap what's going on with the story in that specific mission. Otherwise there are always new missions to play through until the very end (level 30 at launch). Graphics are solid, albeit not quite as impressive as they were three years ago when the game launched. This is unfortunate since the Snowdrop engine being used by Ubisoft is very powerful. Though we don't get the greatest visual experience on consoles, the visuals are still strong - especially when you consider this is a massive world. Even things like heavy snowfall and fog can play a vital role in visibility in some cases. Perhaps the most encouraging news is that Ubisoft isn't pressing for your hard-earned cash right away. The first few minor DLC packs will be free, with a pair of major DLC expansions that will really stretch the game - all within The Division's first year. Where Destiny is a bumbling mess when it comes to the long-game, The Division is much more strategic and engaging right from the get-go. If you can appreciate the third-person shooter viewpoint and dig open worlds that encourage social engagement then The Division is worth a try. Expand

It is a considerably more rounded game than Destiny (to which it has been often compared) with a much more distinct sense of purpose to the game. Destiny felt like a collection of arenas tied together with a very flimsy narrative. The Division's narrative is much more clearly defined and the world is much more cohesive.
Multiplayer works like a charm in PvE.
My only criticism is that there may be some balancing issue with difficulty in the Dark Zone (PvP).

The developers were very slow to tap its potential, and while still more than two years fixing it they haven’t reached the peak, they have accomplished almost most of it. Unfortunately, it’s already too late for people who have abandoned the game, that makes the game less profitable and sends resources to other paths instead of perfecting the game. While they finally got the loot, the balancing and activities right, the developers never got to fix their crown jewel, the Dark Zone. PvP is a toxic mess that counters everything the game is set to do, and not for everyone, but it’s there if you want to try it. Fortunately, those who want to avoid the Dark Zone and PvP in general, now have plenty of activities to do. The community on PC is all but depleted, so I recommend the PS4 if you want to easily matchmake for the surprisingly long list of activities the game has gathered through the years. I believe at this stage, the developers should capitalize on the positive changes, and lower the sticker price of the game significantly, avoid paying full price for it at all cost, but do buy it. I was able to participate in the open beta and was pleased enough to warrant an pre-order. Then they dropped their year 1 content announcement and I was sold to upgrade to a Gold Edition. I had to hand it to Massive for putting out a concise plan, and wanted to reward that with my dollars. Usually I can be fairly skeptical, but what can I say other than "I had a good feeling."

So let's start with the bad: There were a few glitches and issues in the gameplay that came up on my day 1 that made me rage for around 20 minutes -- a portion at the start of the game forces you to login in an open area where other PCs can block you, and took a long time for the system to recognize me and get me actually going. Nothing game breaking otherwise. I'll have to feel out the endgame content more but I could see it getting a bit tedious or repetitive if not careful.

The Good: The handling and mechanical feel, while not at the level of Destiny, still feels great. The RPG mechanics are robust, and if you like yourself some min/maxing and number crunching this game is for you. It reminds me of an interesting blend of Destiny, Mass Effect, and Call of Duty. Why?

Destiny for its open world simulation. It exists at a nigh MMO state but doesn't quite cross the threshold, while emphasising Coop PvE content. Unlike Destiny (before the taken King), Division has a semblance of a story.
Mass Effect for its RPG elements and tactical combinations. One of my favorite pasttimes is playing the Coop multiplayer in Mass Effect 3 quite a few years ago, and figuring out the best combinations with my buddies to create the most explosive and deadly combinations. This game doesn't just take that idea but it advances it in every way. Multiple buff consumables, completely customizable skills to use, perks to choose from, talents to unlock, and guns and armor that advance specific playstyles.
Call of Duty, I know may sound to most like a rebuff to the game, but actually I think stylistically the game matches that gritty, one man army idea. I advance and work with a team where I can, and has a certain element of military precision to it. The gunplay feels most familiar to this game series as well.

All in all I strongly advise giving it a whirl. Time will truly tell if it is able to stand the test but I'm very enthralled thus far.

So for me, that's what makes a game great, Like a fresh love, you can't stop thinking about.

Just some remarks on reviews from other players:
    - Lifeless world: when your city is being destroyed by a lethal virus and being controlled by flamethrowing gangs, ready to incinerate you.. If I'm somehow still alive, I wouldn't be ropeskipping across town. So the city not being overrun with NPC's, isn't anything but normal in these conditions? It contributes to the overall atmosphere for me.
    - Bulletsponge enemies: It is a RPG. Every other RPG I've played had the same style of killing the enemy. P.e. Barret (FF 7) didn't kill enemies with a single head shot, so why would this be happening now? It is a RPG and plays like a RPG. So you can't really complain about it, I think. Anyhow, when fighting enemies of the same level as me, I've never had to put more then 1 clip into an enemiy or 2 headshots with my sniperrifle.

I've played about 18hours, only level 16 but had much fun just walking around and seeing where the game takes me. Random encounters, doing some missions. After 18 hours I've only scratched the surface.
I still have to start in the DZ and with the announcement of other DLC, I may have to resign my job, to keep up...

I play mostly solo and it's great. I've tried co-op with 2 friends and it was even better. Looking forward to the DZ which was great in the beta.

Just my 2 cents and mostly to rectify a little the major complaints I've heard about the game. Again, it's a RPG, taking place in a city, being destroyed by a virus and controlled by vicious gangs. It is what it is.

Recall that this game has always been intended as an RPG not a shooter. As such, enemies need to not always die in one hit (many do, but not elites or bosses. that would be lame even in a shooter). As an rpg, there is an element of grinding required to level up and find good gear and the right loadout for you. The balance probably needs a little work, but the gameplay is amazing and fun. I don't even find myself minding the repetition due to the dynamics of the combat. I've done PvE only thus far as I am not a huge PvP fan, but it has kept me quite engaged with a good story and depth in the characters and enemies. The world feels alive, though dying (as it should) and the graphics are pretty fabulous, as a person who has worked in multimedia myself. The game feels fluid and customizing your gear is fun. Yes your character model does not have a huge array of options ,but enough to simulate most ethnic groups unlike many game which claim customization. In addition, most of the appearance customization comes in the form of apparel which are purely cosmetic items of clothing. So if you like rpgs with a more action-like combat pace, tactical shooting, and you enjoy fairly grim story arcs, this is a great game. The co-op play is great and easy with drop-in drop-out online play, and can even be a significant challenge if you want to play some of the story missions on harder difficulties. Expand

I played for 5-hours + yesterday and did not experience one glitch. Loot could be dropped more frequently, but that's what anyone playing a RPG would say. Anyone reviewing this game without 30+ hours is not giving you the full review. This game is a lot of fun and contains a lot of depth and customization. Should be good for the long haul. Expand

More fun with a group of people you know.

It's not perfect - it needs to be a bit bigger, it needs trading and a clan system and just more content overall - but this game is certainly on the right path - and if they continue this path people will enjoy this game for a long time.

The Dark Zone PVP is done RIGHT. It's so tense, some of the best moments in gaming i've had in a long time. Highly recommend this game.

The Division is moody, dramatic, gritty and action packed. It's a more sophisticated Call of Duty mixed in with a huge open world akin to GTA Online. The RPG elements are abundant and the loot system gives you a feeling of accomplishment and progression. I've never wanted to explore in a game like this just as much as I wanted to shoot things. You can see that the developers put a lot of thought and work into every subtle nuance of the game. Those initial feelings of confusion will probably go away after your first few hours of gameplay. I'm looking forward to playing this game more and more as it expands.

Pros: Graphics, Gameplay, Music, Level Design, Boss Fights, Matchmaking

Cons: Initial learning curve, limited character creation, enemy variety

Truthfully I play most of it solo, and then I do matchmaking to replay a mission on hard. The co-op can be as simple for you as Dark Souls co-op feature. You don't have to use your microphone, and you don't have to hear other peoples as well. In doing it that way, for me, it makes co-op a lot of fun, and just a useful tool to get better "goodies" from hard missions.

At its core it's a fun sandbox RPG that can be easily tailored to fit how you want to enjoy it. The gameplay is crisp, and while others may balk a graphical downgrade, I don't see it because I really don't know what it was supposed to look like. I didn't follow the game very closely up to release. As with anything on metacritic my score is slightly inflated to account for the 0 scores, and the fact that there is no .5 system. It's not off by much though, my true score would be 8.5.

You can't rely on DPS, you have to work with your team mates to take down enemies methodically. It makes sense that a modern shooter will have enemies in body armor, so you have to shoot well, and the mechanics let you spray and pray or be methodical and accurate. Its more satisfying to use an assault rifle correctly, from the scope in short bursts as a gun actually performs in real conditions, that to get quick and easy kills due to auto aim or auto correct in other games. You either want this kind of shooter or you don't. If you do, there is an awful lot do as 5-10 minute side missions pop up everywhere alongside the 30 minute main missions, or just patrol the dark zone. It is far more solid a tactical shooter than you might be led to believe by the casual FPS crowd who want easy kill streaks. Good game. Not perfect, but very solid. Expand

The changes in day, nighg and weather as well as lighting and the bewildered survivors that litter the streets all suck you in to the reality that has been created here. The developers have done so much work to give you this bleak but beautiful playground to explore and survive. I have found myself climbing as high as possible just to absorb the views of the environment
The game must ne experienced to fully understand its value for us as gamers and the work it has done to surely force other developers to change the way they approach and deliver games. The graphics, sound and gameplay are amazing and nothing i write can deliver justice to the experience you deserve to enjoy yourself. The detail in the world, the weapons, the character costumes is sublime. There is no such thing as perfection in gaming. The closest that came for me in my mind and memory was long ago in Metal Gear Solid. But once again for me this is as close as it gets. I am sure some people will disagree and if the game doesnt capture you from the instant you start then it just isnt for you like Uncharted isnt for me. And thats okay. But i can still be objective and i know uncharted is an amazing gaming series even if it isnt a game I can like or love. Everything from lighting to reflections in puddles and windows look fantastic although arguably less so than its PC counterpart. In terms of depth it might be too soon to give the Division the edge over Destiny but it offers so much options in terms of customization that I absolutely love it. Adding a scope, grip or paint to your rifle and seeing it swing from your backpack is ackwardly satisfying. The only possible downside I can mention, is like Destiny, is the chance of repetitiveness in terms of missions and foes. I hope that with more time and progress in the storyline, I have played roughly five to seven hours now, the variety in missions, foes and their tactics will increase because this is what ruined Destiny for me, it was just too repetitive. Overall it looks and plays better than Destiny, its customization options far exceed Destiny's kits and classes (although Destiny's gear estetics where nice too look at) so the Division has tons of potential and I hope Ubisoft will be continue to add to this world by both free and paid content.

It can get better ofc but it feels interesting and i find my self coming back for it. The extracted space in the base stash could be bigger though but i think it will be patched sooner or later.

    1. The enemies are bullet sponges. This game has an ultra realistic feel to it. The amount of bullets you have to pour into someone to kill them contradicts the realistic feel of the game.

    2. Although it is advertised as an MMO. It actually has a "drop in" style multiplayer like Destiny, Warframe, and Dibalo 3 where you can join other people's games and play with them, but you will never run into another person while out fighting and doing missions. There is one exception to this, the Dark Zone. The Dark Zone is how they can get away with calling this an MMO. It is an open MMO PvP zone where you get the best loot in the game. It's a fairly large zone(About 30-40% of the map).

TLDR: If you like Destiny, Planetside 2, or Defiance, you will probably like this game. Although, the game is not a perfect 10, I will be pouring many late night hours into it with friends.

That said this games has it flaws. Character customization sucks, not many options when you create your agent, still seems like you're on Beta. Moments when in game you are just walking with no real threat. Not many weapon variety, but firing your weapon is tons of fun.
Dark Zone is intense, and I do mean intense. This is where you do feel the threat. Trying to extract some weapons just to have some NPCs come and kick your arse is hardcore. There's also the threat of not knowing if the other players will betray you or help you.

Storywise I don't care much, I mean it's not that bad, but the fun side of the gameplay just wants to keep shooting and killing every RIker or Cleaner instead of listening to the story.

Gameplay [8/10]: It is a good third person shooter. It does not stand out in this category- but does a well enough job to keep you playing. Enemies can be a bit of a bullet sponge, but nothing too terrible.

Loot system [9/10]: The arsenal is HUGE but generic. The armor doesn't effect appearance really, just stats. Clothing does change appearance but it doesn't carry stats. That being said the RNG is great. It reminds me of borderlands a lot. It is generous but not too generous and it more than scratches that "loot" itch.

Story [8/10]: (I haven't finished so this may be hasty). I'll be honest the story is generic and can be bland. This is an MMORPG much like Destiny was. However, the fact that there is a story gives you a reason to shoot more bad guys. It builds atmosphere and drives motivations out in the open. For an MMORPG it is surprisingly good- it does more than what it needs to do. From the extra videos you find on abandoned cell phones to the many cut scenes and characters- at least it tries to add some context to you actions, unlike other console MMO shooters like Destiny.

PvE [7/10]: The missions are fairly typical. They compose of boss fights, defending stuff, finding stuff, and fetching stuff. There could be more variety with this considering the huge pieces of the world that are dedicated solely to these missions. With that in the open I will disclose that the RPG systems are fantastic. They are deep yet interchangeable. The game manages to allow you to commit to the role of a tank, DPS, or healer. But it also lets you change between them at will. A mid level character can have the stats and perks to be a strong contender in all 3 roles and that is something special.

PvP (Dark Zone [10/10]: This part is AWESOME. The tension built between players is unique and palpable. The dark zone is an open part of the world where you can kill other players or NPCs for better loot. It has a separate leveling system that is barren but the way it plays out is too cool. You can play the dark zone like typical PvE or PvP. You can kill NPCs or other players and collect loot. In order to keep the loot you have to call in a helicopter and extract it. This puts a target on your back and other players/NPCs will come for you and try to take that loot. That tension you feel when sitting across from another player waiting for the helicopter wondering if he will try to kill you and take your **** is something special. It is a great idea and it is well executed.

Setting/graphics/performance [9/10]. New York looks good and yet somewhat haunting. I am impressed at it's size, scope, and appearance. The graphics overall look good considering the size of this game, and it preforms very well. Slight bugs and server issues here and there but overall really good.

This is a strong game overall. While the mechanics could be better it does most everything right. How long I play this game depends on how good the end game is. But as I play along now, approaching level 19, I am having a great time. Where as other similar games like Destiny (an MMO-RPG-FPS-PvP) try to be everything at once the Division commits to its RPG mechanics and its setting whole heatedly. It is worth the $60 and hours of you time.

But really, it's the little things that make Division great. How surfaces react when hit by a bullet. How lighting changes in the day/night cycle. How weather conditions have a REAL impact on the gameplay. How an enemy getting hit in the nose with the butt of your gun reacts. These are the things that are simply missing from other titles like Destiny.

There is a certain element of grinding after hitting level 30. Dark Zone is the most innovative PVP arena to date, but in order to excel, you really, truly, have to grind. RNG and frankly, non-intuitive weapon perks make this process frustrating at times, where a high end weapon can be either "just ok" or "absolute beast" depending on the roll of dice.

On the other hand, that's what makes you go back to killing bosses time and time again.

If these reviews would include the community, I would have to deduct a point. There are some real **** playing this game: particularly, kicking people from the party in Challenging missions right after killing the boss. If these COD-kids would leave the grieving to the Dark Zone, this game would be top-notch enjoyment.

It builds a strong foundation on the gameplay front, offering up rewarding combat and simple skills, but doesn’t follow that with anything substantial, being content to let the standard end game grind and excellent-yet-stressful PVP try to cover all the questions its writing leaves you with.
