Gameplay is classic, and the visuals are stunning. Unfortunately the poor story pacing and awkward timeline of events pulls all emotion from the story and leaves much to be desired.

I watched it, then watched it again, then I recommended it to friends and family. That weekend, I literally went out and paid hundreds of dollars to buy a PS3 *specifically* to play that game. I’ve now beaten the original TLOU on every difficulty level. 100%. I’ve read every issue of the tie-in comic. I bought the art book. I’ve watched all the interviews and behind the scenes things. I’ve read the entire Wiki. I took home the store displays and posters of the game when my local GameStop got rid of them. I’ve stanned that game to all my friends and family for years, whether or not they're gamers. I’ve watched people on Twitch speedrun it to completion, hundreds of times. TLOU is one of the best “movies” I’ve ever seen and one of the greatest video games I’ve ever played. I used to check IMDB every week or so, specifically to see if there was any news on the TV series, even after it was cancelled the first time.

But now all of that is gone. I have zero interest in this franchise now. That's what this game did.

I’m not going to complain about the politics of the game, because frankly, I don’t care. I just want to play video games. I like games made by creators from both sides of the political aisle and starring all varieties of protagonist. But if you want dismiss this as me being a bot or a crazy incel or whatever, you can go right ahead. The truth is that my issue is that this game forgets what TLOU is supposed to be about. Trust me, as I said, I’ve read literally everything ever released about this franchise. The original idea was to have 2 characters experience the world of the game together, and have their relationship change over the course of those events. This franchise is *about* those two characters and their relationship. That is the entire point of the original game. Neither one of them is more important than the other, they were designed to be a duo. The franchise was about these damaged people, learning to trust and love again, amid the zombie apocalypse. This game undoes all of that. It makes it pointless. It punishes you for caring about the story the original told, then it tells you that you were wrong for ever feeling it in the first place.

I am fine with violence in games, and I’m fine with characters dying, what I’m not fine with is story choices that don’t serve the characters and characters which don’t serve the story. I’m not fine with game mechanics that were already on the verge of being outdated on the PS3 but now return in basically the same form. I’m not fine with you lying to me in your trailers, because you KNEW that I wouldn’t buy it if I knew the truth about what you were doing. I'm not fine with you completely changing everything I previously liked about this franchise: a damaged father and his surrogate daughter fighting monsters, of both the human and infected variety. You did nothing interesting to replace that. You gave me nothing to love, you only provided me with innumerable reasons to hate. Specifically, you gave me many reasons to hate this game, these characters, and this company.

I signed up to Metacritic today *specifically* to review this game. That’s how mad it made me. That’s how badly Naughty Dog seems to misunderstand their own franchise and the reasons why people like me enjoyed the original. I'm sure there are plenty of people who will love this game. But I am not one of them. At all. I never want to see it again.

So, this is the end of our long road together, TLOU. I think I’ll focus on franchises and creators who don’t deliberately go out of their way to make me hate them, because that’s their definition of “art.” You said "I'd rather have people passionately hate it than just be like, 'Yeah, it was OK.'" Well, it's not okay and I absolutely HATE it. So I guess you got your wish.

I never saw the leaks. I never got myself biased by it. But after playing, I am flabbergasted. Really surprised by illogical storyline with a clear political slant. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This also means that not a single character trait held any significance to the story as a whole in the last of us 2: they are interchangeable. This is not saying they are not "unique", because they all have their own "trait", but the trait just don't present any plot significance at all.

The gameplay is also aged badly: tossing a item to distract an enemy is the only true stealth mechanic with the exception of just literal x-ray vision should be only the chassis of the stealth mechanic: not the entirety of it. With games like metal gear solid and hitman, this makes the stealth mechanic in the last of us 2 seem so insignificant and limiting in comparison, and having enemies going in very linear patrol routes of one small area doesn't help at all, wasting the potential of the cosmetically gorgeous level design. The combat revolves around dodging, hitting, and shooting with brutal satisfaction: which wouldn't be so bad, even great, but the inclusion of a dodge button really ruined the experience, as some enemies would just get into superarmored mode/locked into animation and not stop attacking you until you are forced to either dodge or die.

This lack of freedom also goes to the story telling elements as well: you play as not just Ellie, but also forced to play as Abby: a character that does some horrible things, and the player have no say in the matter and are just forced to go through with the decision made. The fact that this game forces its player base to play an unlikable character or forced to not progress makes this the worst game I've ever played.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Play as your dad’s killer simulator. Absolute trash and insulting to your fan base. Really disappointed after everything I’ve seen from the Last of Us story. I’ll just end it with the expansions in my head thank you. The only good thing about this game is it’s graphics. I went into this knowing that Joel would most likely die because that’s how the story would naturally progress. However, forcing us play as his killer for a good portion of the game and trying to make us see them as a good person is just a slap in the face. The creators were very obviously trying to make something thought provoking but it fell flat and became a basic run around revenge story. It’s disappointing after how amazing the first game was. I’m really sad that this is what they chose to do with what could’ve been a wonderful sequel. Note: I usually don’t feel a need to post reviews for games because I think everyone should have their own opinion. Seriously though, don’t waste your money on this. Expand

If you were a fan of the original The Last of Us, this game was a massive slap in the face. The way the characters are written in the second game completely goes against the way they were developed in the first game in order to fulfill an extremely contrived narrative. The drop in writing quality here is actually somehow worse than the drop in quality that we saw in Game of Thrones' final seasons.

The storytelling is poor and that is just irredeemable in a game where they sacrifice fun gameplay for story development. Throughout the story you take control of a number of characters at different points in time, and so your inventory and equipment are constantly reset and you're never able to feel powerful or in-control. This would be fine as a narrative tool, except the writers utterly fail at convincing the player that the actions and motivations of certain main characters are reasonable or admirable.

To put it simply, if you're looking for fun, engaging gameplay, this game does everything worse than the first game. If you're looking for an interesting, satisfying story that has a meaningful and coherent message and features convincing character development, this game is absolutely not it. The original The Last of Us was a masterpiece of introducing us to flawed characters and making us fall in love with them. This game is more concerned with finger-wagging and guilt-tripping than doing anything resembling good story-telling.

Don't waste your time on this one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU was never about the zombies. It was never about the gameplay. I was never about the graphics. TLOU was about the relationship between Joel and Ellie. Throughout part 1 you could see how their relationship develops and it touched a lot heart of everyone who loved the game.

TLOU had some of the strongest dialogue between characters. The scene where Ellie runs away on a horse and Joel finding her after is an example of what made the story and characters into one of the most praised game to date.

Then you get to part 2. Completely stray away from what defined TLOU. Yeah Joel isn't a good guy and his death was justified, but by doing so, it ruins the whole game. TLOU is literally about Joel and Ellie's relationship. It isn't TLOU without one or the other. I'm not sad because they killed off a main character. I'm sad because their relationship was what defined the franchise. If they wanted to kill off Joel, at least do it at the end of the game then end the franchise there. When either of them dies, its the end of the franchise so might as well do it at the end of the game then end the franchise there.

TLOU 2 completely ruined the franchise for me and it's a shame because part 1 was one, if not, my favourite game of all time.

    I rate this game a:
    fingers lost / 10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start off right away by saying this: I have owned The Last of Us since it was first released. I have replayed the game nearly 20 times, and sometimes when I'm bored I'll just replay random chapters. I've watched, and rewatched, Youtube playthroughs. That's how much I love it. Joel and Ellie are my favorite characters in any video game. So when the second game was announced, you can imagine how excited I was. When the first trailer was released, you can imagine how excited I was. With each step closer to the release, my anticipation grew. I preordered the special edition, prepared to spend $200 on this game. THAT is how much I love TLoU. When the leaks first surfaced, I put my foot down and refused to look. Naughty Dog created Uncharted and TLoU, my favorite video games EVER. I refused to doubt them. A week or so passed, and I'd successfully avoided spoilers. Then I saw it. Stupidly, I scrolled through a comment section, and my eyes caught on the words: "Joel dies". My heart sank and I immediately kept scrolling, trying to convince myself that I hadn't seen it, that it was probably fake anyway, that I could simply move past it. But here's the thing... when I say Joel and Ellie are my favorite characters, the emphasis is on Joel. I. Love. Joel. So naturally, my imagination started racing. "Do I want to spend $200 on the game if Joel dies?" So I took the leap. And I will forever be grateful that I did. Within 2 minutes of reading the leaks I was crying, cancelling my preorder and unable to fall asleep that night. I cannot describe to you the heartbreak and rage that I felt at discovering what would happen to my beloved characters. That was weeks ago, and I've since cooled down. Before this game was even released, I mourned for Joel, went through the stages of grief. So now, at the time of release, I'm no longer raging - I'm just disappointed. Now I've been watching playthroughs, and the graphics are as beautiful as expected. I live in Seattle, and even THAT isn't enough to get me to buy this game. Do you know how excited I was, when I first heard the game would be in my home city?! The idea of exploring Seattle with Joel and Ellie was MINDBLOWING. Now, it's an afterthought. Exploring Seattle within this graphically stunning video game isn't enough. I will not ever be purchasing this game. I will never even buy it used. Now let me explain why.

I believe in the freedom to create whatever art you want to create. I, however, am also free to despise that art. And I do. If the story was true to the characters and felt honest, things would be different. But it's not, so here we are. They destroy the very foundation of the characters that we love. If you think for one second that Joel Miller would trust a group of strangers enough to follow them into a closed space, and let his guard down enough to give his real name then you DO NOT KNOW JOEL. End of story. If you think for one second that Joel wouldn't have pulled out his gun after being shot in the leg, you DO NOT KNOW JOEL. Joel, fundamentally as a character, at his core, would never follow a group of strangers when he's completely outnumbered and knows that he has a bad reputation. Because of this, his entire death scene loses all credibility.

Let me be clear and say that I'm fine with Joel dying. His death could have been a devastating, beautifully done moment. Instead, it's fundamentally untrue to his character and only serves as shock value. Instead of inspiring the player, it leaves you with nothing but bitterness and coldness - toward the game itself. I've watched so many people become distant, cold, bitter, uninterested, and detached, during and after the death. I don't believe Joel would have EVER allowed himself to be in that position, therefore the entire scene feels empty, untrue, and forced. Joel is a survivor.

Now since I have limited characters, I will skip to the end. Throughout the game you/Ellie kill thousands of people. And then suddenly, once you get to Abby, the end goal of the entire storyline... you get... nothing. Suddenly, after killing so many people, this one kill isn't worth it. Suddenly, killing gets you nowhere and shame on us for killing all those people just to kill Abby. Ellie is sad, revenge got her nowhere, it didn't bring Joel back and so on and so on. Abby, the ONE person in the game who successfully got her revenge, disappears into the sunset. Newsflash, Naughty Dog: WE KNOW KILLING IS BAD. KILLING BAD. WE KNOW. Guess what: IT'S A VIDEO GAME. You go through these games, generally, defeating enemies. Usually, by killing them. That's why we upgrade weapons, build our arsenals. It's at the core of these types of video games. So for you to use the boss battle to prove a point about "killing bad. Ellie realizes now. Not before, but now." Is laughable. Any player investment that survived Joel's death is killed off for good with an unsatisfying, anticlimactic ending. In the end, it was all for nothing.

Its not gritty and edgy/it's just outright discussing and carries no emotional value, just shock factor and that's about it. The gameplay is nice, polished from the first but nothing to make up for the main reason I waited seven years. This game is an absolute kick in the groin and its so disappointing, I'm not raging mad, just so disappointed that I think it best that I just trade in now and revel on what I liked about the first game

There is a clear and undeniable drop-off in writing from the first to the second game that made the game a chore to play, with an excruciating ending that serves no purpose or lesson. I love the cinematic games Naughty Dog release time and time again, it is through story telling that they have made their mark in the video game industry.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I created an account right after finishing the game just to write a review on this travesty. I have never seen such a massive disconnect between a game's fidelity and its narrative outside of indie games (which generally tend to have great narratives but lack the budget to provide outstanding visuals).

After waiting for 7 years, the worst has come to pass and Neil Druckmann has killed off yet another series due to his frankly unbelievable retconning of character's personalities; Joel and Tommy in particular feel as if aliens are wearing their skin and masquerading as them, making bone-head decision after bone-head decision.

Newly introduced characters are about as dry and unlikable as they come, with the exception of Jesse who has some great moments. Dina has the impact of a forgettable, throwaway background NPC. Speaking of forgettable, I wish I could forget about the 10-12 hours I spend playing as the game's main villain, Abby, after she brutally massacres the alien pretending to be the first game's beloved protagonist, Joel, after the alien humanoid saves her life.

Plot holes aplenty in this adventure, ranging from "mildly infuriating" to "absolutely infuriating, why did I waste time and money I cannot get back on this game?" Whether its Joel and Tommy announcing to a group of armed strangers their true identities, or Ellie finally tracking down Abby yet again after killing hundreds of people who had no direct involvement in Joel's murder - only to shy away from closing the deal because it's "not what Joel would have wanted" (despite claiming herself that Joel would be "halfway to Seattle" if it was her or Tommy that was killed) and letting Abby get away with Lev and two free extra fingers! What a steal!

Visually, the game is phenomenal. What an immense accomplishment by the environmental artists at Naughty Dog. I urge them to seek employment elsewhere, and escape the sinking ship as fast as possible. Gameplay is dated and boring, but I'll give the game 3 pity points for the amazing scenery.

So in summary, 3/10! A little something for everyone.

Gunplay is fun as usual especially when wiping out the super whiny enemies.the addition of fending off dogs and new infected types is a welcome addition to the gameplay.Unfortunately the story in this game is absolutely awful.Do not trust the critics on this one, more than half of them were paid off by Naughty Dog. Aside from the performances by the main cast it does not save this wretched unwanted tale of unrelenting agenda pushing.Neil Druckman has created a compromised mess of a game.By choosing to go the Rian Johnson route by subverting expectations, ignoring playtesters and fans, taking advice from questionable sources, and forcing employees to go through rigorous crunch periods to push out this unrealistic and laughable phantasmagoria he conjured in his head. For a story driven game the writing is stunningly poor to the point where you wonder why noone questioned the choices Druckman has fatefully made.I will refrain from spoilers but everybody knows at this point the dreadful scene that appears very early on in the game. Why naughty dog? Why this way? Why do it so poorly? It was a heartrending scene in not the way they intended. To me it felt like Druckman was personally spitting on whoever enjoyed the first game because he felt like they enjoyed it for reasons he didnt agree with.As i trudged through this bitter clunky story i noticed the Ellie we love didnt even develop as a character, instead becoming static midway through. Why you ask? Because in order to fully insult fans of this game the plot needs to be sacrificed. The controversy surrounding the LGBTQ aspects in this game is of no consequence, its great to see inclusion and perspectives from people on all sides of the spectrum but poor poor misguided Druckman used this as a tool and a crutch.Hammering these character traits down so hard the game seems to be more concerned with the way the characters are perceived and persecuted rather than focusing on an actual story. Making such a spectacle out of Ellie and Abby's sexual preferences takes the opposite effect.Rather than presenting these traits of the characters as something positive and organic,it is used in a very ugly way by punishing the characters for being gay. You can look at it as being realistic but the fact is it is not done in a well executed way.Supporting characters have bad goofy dialogue, poor decisions are made to fit the plot, and a very unfitting and pitiful end for a certain character leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The first game was brutal of course but it had a big big loving heart and by the end you understood whyJoel loves Ellie so much and why he had to do what he had to do to save her. In this game there is no heart, just ugly depressing situations that leave you with no hope and no sense of catharsis by the time the credits roll by.I finished this game feeling burnt out. With whats been going on in the world in 2020 we needed a win whether it be big or small, but this game is one big giant loss.Shame on Mr.Druckman for foisting his vile view of the world onto us. We dont need this game. Personally the story ended for me once Joel made his promise to Ellie after saving her. This sequel is just a representation of a delusional fantasy from a very sad man.Go back and play the first one and dont buy into this. I usually get it that liking a game or not is subjective but when you present a trailer and show scenes with Ellie and Joel only to later find out it's not gonna be like that, i already feel this is **** Let's be honest, most of the people loved the first game because of the story, not the gameplay so the people complaining about people leaving bad reviews based only on the story should understand that if the story alone can make a game good, it should be able to make it bad as well. Having to play the character that killed my favorite character so therefore, i don't really like it and having to keep it alive and explore it's story (that's what you do while you play ) adds a completely different feeling to the game than the first one and I, like most of the others, bought this game because I liked the first one and hoped to experience what was presented in the trailers ( Joel and Ellie ) , not just some flashbacks. I will not complain about the inconsistency of the characters because tbh i wouldn't complain about it if I would've like the story . Expand

It immediately transition to a cutscene that joel is already buried at the cemetery, they should have made a short burial cutscene for him Expand

I really wanted to like the game, It actually has really good graphics and decent game play, but that is to be expected of a triple A game as anticipated as this one. That being said the story was awful, the new characters were awful and I absolutely hated what they did to Joel. It might just be my biased opinion but the story could have been handled much better.

The story is also bad. Gameplay is good but with the development of tech it is normal.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
