I love the lgbtq representation and diversity in the game but I feel like most of it was unnecessary to the plot line? like it felt forced almost. Also, as a player of the game, and human being, seeing a character i was so attached with from the first game die the most brutal way possible was heartbreaking and disappointing. I think it's very obvious that joel's death was very messy and makes no sense at all. Almost like they wanted to get over with him. I hated the game with a passion. The idea was there but i the execution was horrible. it had potential of being a diverse, have a strong storyline that gives you closure, and emotional. But instead it was forced, and horrible. I really do hope next time, they read what the fans want and not what the critics want. Expand

It's a good game. The pacing is a little all over the place but it tells it's story well and if you're willing to not be cynical about the experience and take your time with it, you will probably enjoy it.

A beautiful game world, showing off the strength of the PS4, and highlighting how far games have come since the first addition of The Last of Us, the second game has a lot to live up to. And in my opinion it lives up to it. The story is interesting and unique, and had me thinking about my actions as Ellie as I slowly learnt about the characters I was once hunting on the Abby side of the story. This was a really effective way of telling the story, as it slowly dawned on me that the people who I was killing as Ellie were people, who had lives and meaning. It wasn’t the same as killing infected, although I slowly realised that Ellie was falling deeper and deeper into this need for revenge that was actually slowly eating her away. It is first seen when Ellie decides to go after Abby instead of joining Jesse to help Tommy. When Ellie decides to try and get revenge for Joel instead of saving Joel’s brother, I knew that Ellie was getting tunnel visioned by her need for justice. And I think this is echoed once again when she leaves the farm.

And in the end she realises this. It is a beautiful character arc that really shows how the characters in The Last of Us 2 are alive and almost real.

For me and for more people this is the best game of the year, this game can show us two sides of a story showing to us that is a reason for the things we do, and i think this is the point that the people that low rated this game didnt understand, why joel was killed, and say too that joel death wasnt an heroic death, but they don t se that joel wasnt anymore the main character, and don t see that they are in a apocaliptic world were the deaths aren t the most heroic but some of the death have a reason to happen like joel he killed abbys father but saved ellie its like a necessity to continue the tlou2 because if joel didnt kill abbys father, ellie was dead and it will not be able to have a tlou2 its like a sacrifice to continue and remember billl from tlou "in this world love as only one propose and it is to kill you", but after this i only need to say that the gameplay is awesome the story is beautyful and gustavo santaolala did just the most amazing work Expand

Finaly played this game and i now understand why people hate it. They ruined everything that made the first one amazing for sjw brownie point from **** Not to mention the hypocrasy from Sony when it comes to sexual acts on Play station. It is alowed for them in the games they make but everything else has to be censored like Devil May Cry 5. Never buying another Sony first party game ever.

Took what was so incredibly special about the first game and literally took a gigantic cleveland steamer all over its chest. It's like Luke Skywalker being the hero for the first film, having him die to a random NPC with zero importance attached to them who then goes on to be the star of the show? What the actual EFF. Naughty Dog have lost a life long fan in me.

Criticisms regarding a couple of shock moments & the set up for them felt largely unwarranted to me. By the end of the game they are re-covered, clarified and work and serve as a necessary powerful catalyst to the plot.
But the game is beautiful, enjoyable, tense, bleak as all hell as we'd expect following the first game & tells a powerful (albeit not revolutionary) story of all-consuming hatred & the inevitable totality of sacrifice in the pursuit of revenge. And it tells it well. Characters felt real &, a few motivational hickups aside, were believable & well rounded.
It stuck in my head, I was replaying segments in my mind days later and am still moved by it. I'm keen to replay it already.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OK Don't write many reviews but had to for this one. I played TLOU about 5 times or more. Again just before this game in anticipation. Sadly, I've only played this game once and will be trading it in and forgetting about it. What a wasted opportunity to build on top of a fantastic game (TLOU). The character arc and development is extremely poor. There is no explanation for many of the plots. In TLOU you were a passenger n the journey the Joel and Ellie took. In this game,

I can see why fans are angry and saying Naughty Dog deceived them. All promos and trailers essentially showed Ellie on a revenge spree. Yes Joel was there but it could be guess that either he or Dina were gong to die to make Ellie so angry. But the main part of the game, you're not playing as Ellie.

Even worse, youre jumping back and forth between characters and time periods that it gets downright confusing.

I don't mind Joel got killed. That actually made me want to play the game as it gave Ellie her motivation for what she was about to do. Bring it on!! But from there, the story falls flat.

Then we start playing Abby for what seems the majority of the game. WTF? I hated this segment and was forced to trudge through it only to see the ending. The sections where you're fighting Ellie as Abby were just plain dumb. Many a time, I stood out in the open so Elli could kill me but that ended the game.

I got excited when we became Ellie again, albeit it for a short moment.

Sadly this is a forgettable game and wont be played again by me. This isn't the Last of Us part 2, may a well have called it "The Abby Chronicles".

Such a shame Naughty Dog handed this out after 7 years of development. Would have been better to leave TLOU as a one off and done a different IP.

I was thinking Id play this game a few times to get my fill and savour the moment. All I can say is thank God Gh0st of Tsushima and Cyberpunk are coming out soon!

For one, I was only not a huge fan of the first game. I actively disliked the combat and stealth gameplay in the first game, even though I loved its story and world building and characters. The sequel, however, improves on almost every single aspect of the original game. It may be an evolution and not a revolution but everything is polished to perfection in a way that boggles the mind. The sequel made me care about the characters and the world in a new way. And it improves upon the stealth and combat so that it now is really fun to play, whereas I was really struggling to enjoy myself with the first game. The incredible sense of freedom in the stealth and combat scenarios allows for endless fun and variety. The visual presentation is stunning and the world is rich in life and detail. The ruined Seattle is an absolute joy to explore. The calm and beauteous moments complement the dark moments. The audio soundscape is perfect for ambiance and emotion. The story is epic and sprawling yet also focused and tight and perfect. I played the game on the highest difficulty "Survivor" (not recommended for the first playthrough, the game warns!) and that heightened the tension in a way that only made the game better for me. The fear of constant death and the brutality of those deaths, combined with the ability to nearly instantly restart an encounter, made for a unique experience. In short, the game pushes the boundaries of interactive media by marrying one of the best narratives ever told with one of the best gameplay systems. An incredible game. 10/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The hatred of this game simply astounds me. Story aside, on the technical achievement this game is a 10/10. Looks and sounds fantastic, has a massive range of accessibility options too that you don't see in most games. The acting too is great. Great performance from the cast and solid directing.

Now the story, I played the first game 5 times (twice on Grounded mode) so I'm in a position to comment on it as someone who loves the story from the first. Spoilers ahead.

So Joel dies at the hands of a girl whose father he murdered at the end of the first game. His actions regarding Ellie at the end of the first game WERE extremely selfish, but understandable. Aside from that, we learned that he did some bad things in his past between the outbreak and meeting Ellie. He is the anti hero in a series about Ellie. This series was always about Ellie and here she takes the lead role. Does Joel die to early? Arguably. But the controversy surrounding his death is pathetic.

I like the way the game is split between Ellie and Abby. Playing as Abby opens up a whole new perspective in this world. She's part of a group that can be lethal when required, but also human in comfortable moments. The same as Joel and Ellie's new found group in Jackson.

Overall it's a great game. The faux outrage over it is downright pathetic. People need to grow up. Buy the game, try your best to ignore the hive mind of social media and make up your own mind. If you don't like the story that's ok, but the game itself is still great to play as the game play is fantastic.

And the gameplay fleshes out TLOU 1st game's foundation, though in some respects, doesn't pushing into groundbreaking territory with the sequel. Still, if you enjoyed the stealth, crafting, combat mechanics and gunplay of the first...there should be plenty to love in TLOU 2. The story, honestly, is harsh....yes....but very fair....and very brave, if you ask me. It is a natural extension of what was started in the 1st game, if one can simply detach from unreasonable expectations garnered in everyone's love for Ellie and Joel's character. At the end of TLOU, Joel's decision plays out as a heart-wrenching one of a loving father figure. But only in as such as we get the narrowest of keyhole views into that decision. TLOU 2 allow the full consequences of that decision to bloom. And as heartfelt/heart-wrenching as that decision was....it was also a devastating decision....a selfish tribal-driven decision (understandable, tho! Saying this as a father of 2 girls myself) which breeds and weaves the ugliness of tribalism into the brutal story of TLOU2. Looking back from as detached a perspective as I can muster, the story is true to the heart of TLOU. Druckmann and co must have known he/they would be harshly criticized for their decision to tell that story. Kudos to you, good sir. Brave choice! Expand

The visuals were incredible and I was constantly blown away by small details in the environments, characters, objects - everything. Everything looks so realistic and lots of time has gone into grounding the player in the world. The gameplay has also become a lot more engaging since the first instalment. I found that the stealth gameplay was a lot more engaging as there is more to do, rather than just waiting and watching. The large variety of ways to engage people was also great, as I always felt there were interesting and varied ways to survive encounters. I played on the second hardest difficulty and really enjoyed it. I didn't use the listen mechanic at any point (as a personal challenged) and I didn't feel like I needed it. The sound design was so good that you could generally get a feel for where the enemies were and it increased the my enjoyment of each encounter - making things more tense. I also really enjoyed the story. The story isn't fan service - this game is clearly not about making people feel good. It is a thoughtful game that challenges you and your actions and this is something I enjoyed. Going into this game - I knew it would make me uncomfortable just like lots of top-tier art. To me, this is a strength of the game rather than a weakness. After loving the first game, I didn't feel like I needed another instalment. Even with that mindset, TLOU II surpassed my expectations in every way and left me extremely glad for having the experience. After playing the whole game, I can understand why some fans hate it. We thought this was a sequel to the first one, but instead, is it's own story. The story is about just one character, instead of the duo we got so familiar in TLoU - this is what pissed so fans off. But once you realize the story is trying to do it's own thing, the game becomes much more engaging.

    If you approach it

There is an important message in this game about the futility of violence and revenge - ironically the infected come across as the most humane group in the game. This is truly an exceptional game and it's subtlety will unfortunately be lost on many gamers. They should probably stick to Call of Duty and leave the layers of depth to the rest of us. Expand

I think the game has told what is wanted to be explained, but it cannot make a logical choice because it associates the events with respect to the proximity of the characters, as well as being an emotional being.

What has been systematically downplayed however, is how boring and repetitive this game is. It drags, it drags like a snail on tarmac, to the point that it will make you question your infatuation for videogames. There is no pay off, no meaning, you will just be left empty, knowing that you wasted yet another 25 hours of your life.

Controls are good, movements are fluid, but the AI is disappointing and the lack of innovative gameplay features, mechanics, and intelligent level design, unequivocally clues the player in as to the misguided priorities of this creative endeavor.

To think that all of these resources, human labor, and skills, were put to the exclusive service of such a mediocre - dare I say, incompetent - director, and game designer, puts into question the reality of the meritocratic nature of this industry.

I'm trying to understand why people hate The Last of Us 2. This is one of the best sequels I've played in my entire life. Last time I got sucked into a story like this was with Red Dead Redemption 2 and LOU2 stands toe to toe with it.

I loved the first game and I really thought that a second part was unnecessary. ND's biggest challenge was to justify the sequel's existence and GODDAMN they did it! I love it even more. It's hard to find anything negative about it. Even the soundtrack is fantastic and I really thought they wouldn' top that. Well, they did that too.

For starters, this is the most beautiful game of this generation. The level of detail and animation technology here is stunning. Part of the reason why you get so convinced in getting involved with the characters is because of how they talk, move, laugh, cry, talk and just react to things. What the devs pulled here was a work of art. A phenomenal graphical powerhouse that paves the way for an incredibly elaborate story.
The gameplay's still very reminiscent of the first entry, but much more improved. Combat and stealth are gruesome, intelligent, challenging, intense and breathtaking. You may not have the level of flexibility of MGSV or the improvisation possibilities of Uncharted 4, but you can ACTUALLY plan how you're going to face encounters and recover from bad decisions, turning the tide to your favor. It's almost flawless. Upgrading your character also feels a lot more rewarding now. Looking for supplies and saving bullets and items matters a lot more, this time.
Oh and the environments are GORGEOUS! Not only to look at, but to explore. They felt scary AND charming at the same time.

But the true driving force of TLOU2 is the story. The acting and writing is at its best. I've seen few things like it in a video game. Without getting into the infamous heavy controversial spoilers, I felt like EVERY decision made in its plot was masterfully done and well justified. It's weird when they break the tale's climax to change the perspective, but when you get further into the script, you just get it. You root for both characters. You may even hate them both. It makes you question MANY things about society, revenge, choice, family, humanity and love. All of these things backed by the strong portrayal of amazing actors, great writing, precise details and impressive animations. Can't remember the last time I cried and laughed this much as I did here.

I guess the bad parts of TLOU2 are in its structure.
Like I said, it is extremely justifiable, but it takes a while to justify it. The story is massive and beautiful, but they break it with many flashbacks and perspective moves. Pacing kinda drags, especially with the "Can't Go This Way, Let's Find Another One" moments. It definitely did not trouble my experience, but I get that it can be bothersome. The third act, albeit VERY impactful, can kinda feels rushed. Specially since they just throw a new group of enemies at you without any background.
The stealth, when facing the infected, doesn't always work. Maybe it's on purpose, but I went through some frustrating moments when dealing with them. Also, your companion's AI sort of... Sucks.

It's really hard to give this game anything different than a 10. It might not feel like it in the future, but I really see almost no flaw in it. I had fun, I got sad, angry, happy, frustrated and felt challenged by TLOU2.
Challenged not only by the gameplay, but also by the story. The game's biggest challenge is to see both sides and to deal and accept that, well... Tomorrow begats tomorrow. Wether it's a good or a bad one. A brutal or a beautiful one. A bloody or a peaceful tomorrow. Your decisions will make or break you. And it might just make or break others too.

If you love video games, play this one.

Avoided social media as much as possible, and youtube videos as well. I think I did a fairly good job of avoiding as much info as possible. So now, after weeks of torture, I finally got to play it.

    Oh my. what was this?
First of all, how could you do that to the best part of the first game? Namely, Joel and Ellie. How could ND do that to them. Such utter disrespect.
The main reasons I loved the first game, were simply treated like trash by ND.
And the character that they introduced? What is this?
The only thing I was thinking while playing was, is this some sort of joke?
But no, it was real, and it was what they had intended.
    Immediate turn-off number one.

Now, let me get to the story. Absolutely Horrid. What part one's story had as a story of hope, this utter mess had destroyed to become some sort of social justice public announcement. Again, I was instantly turned off by what the story had become.

Now, the gameplay to me in the original was always secondary to the story.
Slow paced, hide-and-seek, limited ammo gameplay. Nice, but not its saving grace.
It is basically the same with few nice new features.

Graphics are amazing as usually, but the disaster of a story and cringe cutscenes and agenda pushing messages won't save it this time.

Highly disappointed. Highly Disgusted. Zero Points. I feel so cheated.

Gameplay is very much like the first The Last of Us (TLOU). It does add more stealth options: crawling and being able to hide in tall grass. And in combat you can now dodge enemy melee attacks. The survival aspects have not changed that much. The amount of items you scavenge has increased slightly (played on hard difficulty). It allows you to use crafted items/ammo more often than in TLOU 1. It seems enemies no longer drop the ammo you are currently using which helps a bit with immersion. There still are pretty much the same limits on ammo and items you can carry. While it is slightly illogical it helps to keep the survival tension very real throughout the game.

Graphics are absolutely amazing and breathtaking. Animations are so smooth and fluid. It makes it really hard to go back to play other PS4 titles. This really looks and feels like next gen. The amount of detail in the world you go through in this game is also really incredible.

Sound and music is also top notch. Really helps with the immersion.

Story is the divisive one. I personally loved it, but as you can see from the user score and some youtuber reviews, not everyone did. But for me it was an emotional rollercoaster and i enjoyed it for most of the journey.

Conclusion: I highly recommend anyone to play this game and if you do want to play it try to avoid any spoilers. I enjoyed the game a lot and have to congratulate Naughty Dog on an amazing game.

This game is riding on the fame of it’s predecessor and fails to deliver on many aspects. It’s atmosphere is spot on, and the graphics are state of the art (especially on the old PS4), but the writing/story is a train wreck.

I can’t say much because I don’t like spoiling but whoever wrote this game doesn’t understand some basic story writing aspects that all the great writers for books/movies always follow. There isn’t an arc, a point of maturity, it’s a hollow husk that borrows the name of the previous game only in letters.

Shame because this could have been a good game. I’ve sold my copy and warned my friends.

After the first game was so great, there’s no point in reading the reviews because the 2nd is bound to be fantastic.. How wrong was I, and I hang my head in shame! You fooled me! I have just got past the Joel death and made my way to Seattle and I have turned it off, never to be turned back on again.. There is an ‘Woke’ agenda that’s been pushed into this game needlessly. . I’m all for more female characters and more diversity in my games. But not at the detriment of the stories and characters I’ve grown to love!! Make a new IP or a stand alone story for that. And that’s not me being sexist or prejudice. I’d feel the same if you swapped out Lara Croft for a **** male character! Stop trying to be so woke with our beloved games and characters!... no one is stopping you creating brand new content but please just stop this airbrushing out the ones we love! In short... - Poor storyline
    - Forgettable, meaningless characters - Not much development in gameplay mechanics I find it astounding that the gaming industry is still able to get away with delivering poor products but is not held accountable. I never thought I'd see so much hate levied at this game which at first glance seems like evangelical-conservative-sovereign-citizen-kryptonite with almost every element being anathema to that world view but I think that's incidental to the random hate.

It seems like in every comment I see about this game's ending that the people who hate it understand the ending, they just flatly refuse to accept it. This game constantly flies directly against US revenge culture which has always clashed heavily with Jesus's concept of forgiveness.

This is why they don't offer a meaningful rebuttal to the message of this game, they just pick it apart like the babies picked apart The Last Jedi or Empire Strikes Back when they came out. The actual reaction to this game is what makes it a masterpiece more than the story itself.

Game play was solid. Graphics were absolutely stunning from the scenery to the characters and their animations. Music captured and conveyed the mood everywhere. Sound design was perfect. A courageous narrative, evolved the story of the characters and shows the cruelty of the post apocalyptic world.

This was an emotionally brutal rollercoaster. Fantastic piece of storytelling. The developers had a plan that was beautifully executed. You could see it coming but was powerless to prevent it. Great game!

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
