    While the graphics and gameplay are updated, the story ends 2 hours in and you are left to play another 23ish hours of forced mindless dribble that ends with nothing being resolved and everything to be yearned for. Apparently receiving early review copies are the only thing that keeps games like these on top, but take a second and think about it for yourself: perfect 10/10's, 100/100's ? Something shouldnt feel right here for you. A 10/10 is a perfect game, and while absolutely no game is perfect, this one is far from it. This game is nothing like the first, and anyone going into this game based on the previous will be extremely disappointed. Neil Druckman and Naughty Dog severely under performed and might have possibly killed one of the most beloved franchises and main characters in gaming. I hope this game and its failure exposes the failures of pandering to audiences and ignoring core gamers, and expose media outlets for lying to the public to increase the number of copies sold.… Expand

    The beautiful story of the first game was ruined by a director whose ego is much bigger than his talent. Joel and Ellie have an awful fate and it's all worthless. The story is full of cheap violence, sex, and human torture simply for shock value.     This franchise is all about the story. Without the story the game means nothing. This game does have great visuals and decent gameplay, but the main focus needs to be the story. The story is awful and it tries too hard to make you feel sorry for people that you immediately don’t want to feel sorry for. The ending was completely ridiculous and have no sense.

    just skip it and play the first one instead ,I've loved all of naughty dog's previous games but this was just terrible,the game does look good and animations are pretty great, the story is far from what made the first game what it was, This sequel is a shame for the first title, Never again pre-order for ANYTHING!...

    Uhhh, the strongest thing tlou had wasn't gameplay or visuals, it was the story

    tlou 2 has **** story with average gameplay and good graphics... i was gonna say that i ain't interested in pictures but they also can tell a good story by the visuals alone so i can safely say i'm not interested in a trash-can. (Yeah that's a little bit better)

    This is not canon. When the game is only inspired by ideolgically possessed radical virtue-signalers, it isnt a story in the normal sense. Therefore, the last of us never had a sequel

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Comparing the quality of the writing in TLOU2 to GoT S8 is both appropriate and the kindest thing you can say about the writing.
    Having waited 7 years for the sequel to the most intense, satisfying & powerful cinematic story in gaming, this is a disaster. All the characters act like they're in the first few months after the pandemic & struggling to come to terms with their new, violent reality. It permeates the game. There are some interesting ideas & themes that are never fleshed out or explored & are constantly mired in dialogue & behaviour expected of modern college kids, not those raised in the apocalypse. The technical aspects are as stunning as the performances, the story is nonsensical & unsatisfying at best. The gameplay is completely at odds with the narrative themes it so ineptly attempts to thrust at you, with all the subtlety and appeal of a homeless person thrusting a rotten pigeon carcass in your face and asking you to kiss their baby. It's the poster child for ludonarrative dissonance. There are enjoyable moments to be found, but even though it's a short game, it drags painfully. The ending is unsatisfying and invalidates the theme Neil claims he built the story around even more than the gameplay which not only forces you to slaughter trainloads of strangers, but take satisfaction in it, as shown by the constant mumbling both player characters constantly indulge in every time they do anything or think anything.
    The story is barely worth a point. I've added a bonus point for the brilliant work on display by the production teams, none of which can remotely compensate for this intelligence insulting indulgence in narrative imbecility, stitched together by a complete reliance on constant, unbelievable coincidences and truly cretinous behaviour by all the characters, but especially those previously shown to be smart, cunning, suspicious and capable.     The graphics are good, the world looks good, but so much of this game has not been changed from the first part, which came out seven years ago. You’d think when a game takes this long to create, almost everything would see an overhaul. But no, many things didn’t. The gameplay is the same, the stealth is the same, the death animations are the same for multiple enemies, the upgrade elements are the same, the upgrade station looks the same, the whole system is the same. Level design and exploration is all the same. Even the exploration is marred by so many invisible walls. This game gives you the illusion of having the freedom to explore, only to be met with invisible walls and pre planned loot and dialogues. The story doesn’t give you any freedom at all. It basically spoon feeds you a story that you have no control over. It asks you do certain actions, without giving you any choice at any point, then in the end it scolds your for doing the things that it told you to do.

    This game tries so hard to teach us moral lessons but it’s so forced that it doesn’t belong here. This all looks so plastic. There came a point in the game, when I felt so drowned into the sea of new characters and this sudden trend in this game, where I had to suddenly care about them and just forget about the two characters that I had been building my relationship with, since seven years ago, that I just stopped caring about the story. I stopped caring about the characters, and I certainly didn’t feel any emotions by the end of it. All I cared was to finish the game and get it over with.

    The linearity of this game is so evident, that you realise that you are stuck in the fairy land of one person‘s cruel fantasies and childlike urges, and their whimsical delusions. It’s their world, and they show you the start, the middle, and the end. All you have to do is hold the controller and watch a movie. You get no option at any point in the game. Not during combat, not during story, not during exploration. This is the game model that frankly should be kept far, far away from the public, because to all the people who like democracy, this is a slap in the face. If I wanted to watch a petty revenge fantasy which was so far off from its sequel, I would have gone and watched a petty revenge fantasy which was so far off from its sequel. I wouldn’t have wasted $60 and 25 hours on it.    … Expand

    I wanted this game to be a smashing success, graphics wise it’s amazing but the poorly written sorry just doesn’t make any sense. In the first game Ellie looked up to Joel as her hero why do her decisions in this game go against all the character development we went though with her in the first game ? Not to mention how lazily the plot is, tell me why on earth naughty dog thought it was aI wanted this game to be a smashing success, graphics wise it’s amazing but the poorly written sorry just doesn’t make any sense.     The Last of us to me is a story driven game that thrives on good writing and unfortunately they could not continue this into the second game. Going into the game I was very impressed with the graphics and gameplay. It felt amazing and it was great to be back into the Joel and Ellie story. Killing off Joel was unfortunate to me and how he went out was bad writing, but it did not kill the game for me. Early on playing as Ellie I actually enjoyed the game and loved the brutal side of Ellie. It was once you took control of Abby the game went completely downhill. I remember the second the Ellie side ended and I saw myself controlling Abby I had to stop for a second because I could not believe I had to play as a character I hated so much. I personally did not enjoy playing as Abby one bit and her story was just something I was forcing myself through to see what happens with Ellie. To rub salt in the wound even more about Joels death then making us play as Abby to kill Ellie was probably one of my least favorite experiences I have ever had in any game. Every-time I was killed by Ellie as Abby i was excited and just wanted it to end. Finally towards the end of the game we got to be Ellie again hunting Abby down one last time. At this point the game already went sour, but I had hope there could be a little light left in it. Unfortunately I was completely wrong and they found a way to ruin the game even more by sparing Abby. Ellie being completely broken at the end was tough to experience and left me feeling upset and wishing I had never played the game.

    Visuals: 10/10

    Conclusion: As a Huge fan of the first game I was very disappointed and sad to see one of the best games I have ever played destroyed by such a terrible story. What made the first game so memorable to me was the story and getting so invested into Ellie and Joel only to have it ripped away from me in Part two    … Expand

    WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD!

    For some strange reason, Neil Druckman thinks that Game of Thrones Season 8 and The Last Jedi are the masterpieces and decided to follow the same footsteps.

    During the first hour of the game, Joel is killed like some trash NPC, ignoring his character personality and cautious (to unknown people) behavior towards strangers.

    Then you play as Ellie, to EXECUTE DEM REVENGE, but, then, Jessie is killed like a trash NPC. It was so hilarious i can't even describe in words.

    Next, you play as a Joel killer named Abby in order to symphatize with her (HELL, NO, TY) and then you try to kill Ellie by yourself (controlling Abby)

    During the ending Abby bites 2 fingers from Ellie's hand, but Ellie hallucinates about Joel and REVENGE IS BAD, ELLIE, STAPH! Then she spares Abby's life and sit down.....trying to play Joel's guitar, but there's -2 fingers on her hand, so she can't.

    120 out of 10

    If you consider yourself a fan, pretend that this game doesn't exist. It literally the worst insult a developer can do to it's famous franchise and it's fans.
    Not only that, but Neil Druckman insulted countless of people over twitter, calling them "homophobes" and saying things like "DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T BUY IT, FCK YOU" (this is a quote).

    So, be smart and follow the advice Neil Druckman himself - don't buy it.

    The game is so awfully writted with weak characters, almost zero development and trashy second protagonist, which you can't even kill as Ellie at the end.

    The story is mostly good, but it falls apart as time goes on. It doesn't play out it should, plus is filled with a lot of questionable narrative choices that simply shouldn't exist in a AAA story focused game. It's also way too long.

    The biggest issue is the marriage of gameplay and narrative. They do not gel. Naughty dog seem to have taken no notes on the critiscm of the gameplay in the first game, as its basically unchanged (wow, we get a jump button). Another issue is with the games 'woke' mentality. No this isn't a sjw jerk fest like a lot of people make it out, BUT it isn't completely innocent either, with the story dumping ideas that only seems to annoy angry incels, rather than pull you forward.

    Amazing to look at, really how did they get this out of a PS4 pro, cannot fault it.
    The sound design is great, a few repeated lines that keep been said but still great for this age of tech.
    Animations are great/fluid.

    The OK
    The acting is a mixed bag, it's well done but the script is at times is cringe.

    The BAD
    This is the big bad that destroyers all the other good work, the story is painfully bad. By that I mean its The Last Jedi bad (ok some like that film)
    There are decisions made in-game that are "wtf, did they forget about character behavior/knowledge in the 1st game" plot holes, side stories where I was let saying out loud "Why are you making us play this long side story... it's crap" then the wonderful swap where you play as a person you basically hate....and this is not even mentioning a worse death than Luke in The Last Jedi.
    I get people need to die in games and films, to motivate others, give a reason for their actions, but write it well and in such a way that even those who disagree with it, still see the reason and can understand it.
    After about 15 hrs I was just playing to finish it, get it done, sadly it got worse near the end but by then I had given up and just wanted it finished so I could get it on Ebay.

The foundation for TLOU becoming such a good game is mainly because of the story line and the way naughty dog decided to present this story line just seems rushed and very bad written, even the character personalities is totally changed. in what world would Joel follow a stranger into their group of people? Playing as Abby for half the game is boring and torturing. Btw the ending sucked even more than Joel being killed off. Please fire Neil Druckman :)… Expand

In a violinty apocalyptic world People are worried about changing their gender and diversity. It feels like unnecessary and artificial. Forcing SWJ political messages to a large public in a Video game is not good because its intertainment, a game not a newspaper.

    Out of respect to the developers of this game who went through hell to get this game out there, I'll give this game a 4/10. Graphics, acting, sound effects, music, it's all top notch. So kudos to the technical team. Now, everything else is a mess.

    The pacing is horrendous. At some points you want cutscenes to end because the conversations and characters actions are so bad, and you want to get back to the gameplay, which actually drags for too long too. You are into this repetitiveness mess for the entire game.

    They obviously traded character development for shock value. Characters are as smart as the person who writes the lines for them. The violence and gore are over the top, and non of te characters learned anything from the things going on in this world. Characters felt like they were just put in there in order for Ellie to get her revenge.

    The ending is also the most unrealistic thing I've seen. For a game aiming to teach you something out of the reality of it's own world, the ending makes absolutely no sense. And that's what this game is, a nonsensical tale about nonsensical character doing a lot of nonsensical stuff in the most vicious way possible.    … Expand

    There isn't much good about this gsme. If you saw any of those leaks, they are all true. They take your beloved characters from the previous game and turns them into naive idiots. Noone in this game is a compelling character, everyone sucks, there is no point to anything, and the bad guys are cookie cutter generic stereotypes. Don't waste your time or money.

    I have never seen any game that demeans man so much. 90 percent gaming community is male and I don't know what path SONY is taking with this anti-man approach where a man can not be a brave protagonist. By the way, 40 % of the game you play as a Lesbian and other 60 % as a trans. I guess this average game is meant for minority communities and I think they will like it.

The only reason for killing joel was to give us this sorry excuse for a sequel, how does a man who survived everything the world has throw at him for the last 25 years gets killed in the worst possible way ever. than the game makes you play as the person who kills joel for a big part of the game in order for us to feel bad for her and justify her actions of killing her. horrible story whoever though this was a good idea obviously didn't understand the story and attached fans felt with joel and ellie for it to end with joel being killed off in such a petty way its completely idiotic. I and probably many fans though that joel would die in this game but in a more meaningful way, protecting ellie or sacrificing himself, not for a disgraceful revenge story. the fact that they make you play as this character is pretty much the worst decision ever. I put the controller down uninstalled the game and returned it to gamestop. never have I ever wanted to kill a video game character more than abby and it turns out ellie doesn't even do it. yeah heads up ellie has no problem murdering about 100+ people to get to her just to let her go in the end. worst of all ellie literally loses everything, joel, dina and the life they created, she even loses her pinky finger and ring finger and cant play the guitar anymore. holy crap the girl walks into the woods and the credits roll. what a terrible ending for such a loved character this sequel defiantly should not have been made.… Expand

In fact, the flash backs of Joel and Ellie are the best this game has to offer, which is ironic. The established characters feel out-of-place and poorly written, along with new characters, who are either boring or annoying. The story is so laughably bad, I had trouble pressing on as I felt the writing get progressively worse. It's appropiate to say that the comparison to GOT S8, or The Last Jedi feels hits the nail on the head. The gameplay is okay. A somewhat improvement on the first game's stealth and combat, which were already cumbersome tedious. TLOU2 feels more like a new coat of paint, rather than an much needed overhaul. The game is gorgeous to look at. Probably the best looking game of this generation. The environments are phenomenal and well designed. Unfortuantely the cons far outweigh the pros in this 25 hr long sh*t show of a story. Which is why we all play ND games. For a great story. And this ain't it, chief.… Expand

I really wanted to like this game, but for me the story is everything in a game and this felt like a very bad side-story. And of course the media are saying that the bad user reviews are just because they come from people that are homophobic or don’t like the politics the game has. I have nothing against that the protagonist is gay and I don’t judge people based on their orientation. By the way The Last of Us: Left Behind had also a LGBT aspect and it was taken very positive by the gamers (because it told a good story). The majority of the bad user reviews its because of the lack of story the game has. Don’t fool yourself on believing the 10/10 critics that the media scores and don’t ignore the opinion of the consumers that don’t get payed by saying it’s a 10/10 game.     Never did I think they would do that to our beloved characters from the first game. The second portion of the game becomes extremely mundane and boring and makes you not want to continue. Gameplay was good for the first few hours but becomes boring very quickly. The story was not well written and there was obvious political pandering.

    Storywise this game is completely terrible and spits on what made the last game great, Joel and Ellie. Considering that this is practically a (somewhat) interactive film as the gameplay is monotonous the story is the only thing that could save this game. Overall, extremely disappointing, I couldn't bring me to play after one of the character's deaths.

    Graphically and game play wise, an absolute masterpiece. I wanted to like it so bad. I was so hyped from the trailers but MY GOD the story was bad. I cringed throughout the entire thing. So much horrid dialogue and character assassinations. I can't get myself to go fully through it because the story is THAT unbearably bad.

For me though, the events that transpire in the game felt realistic, reasonable, and it further reinforces the fact that in the world of The Last of Us, there are no heroes and villains, only survivors with their own personal intentions. The character decisions as well were in line with what the character was going through and felt justified based on their development throughout the story. To say that the story is emotionally driven is taking it lightly. There are moments in the story that will just break your heart. It is a sad and depressing tale and yet underneath all of that, there are moments of happiness and joy. It provokes many thoughts and emotions, and through the characters, we are able to experience that. Which is why I think the characters in the game are some of the best and most well realized ones in any video game. You get to feel what the characters are going through and understand the choices they make. It is through these experiences that made me emotionally connect with these characters and made me care for them, especially in this dark and grim world that they are living in. My main issue with the game is regarding its pacing, which I felt was inconsistent and definitely made the game feel a lot longer than it needed to be. It is indeed a story that will definitely not be for everyone, but is definitely for me. The graphics and overall visual presentation of the game is incredible. It is without a doubt one of the best looking games of the generation. Animations are fluid and are some of the best in the industry, specifically the facial animations that looked very realistic. The environments as well provide a tense and realistic atmosphere that further enhances the overall world immersion of the game. Game play, for me, is one of the highlights of the game. Utilizing your arsenal and all the tools that you have during encounters really makes the combat shine. The weapons in the game feel really good to play and quite different from one another. Stealth is simple but effective, and the phenomenal level design allows for multiple ways of dealing with enemies. The upgrading system for weapons is great and each upgrade felt important and impactful to the way you play and handle encounters. Overall, despite the issues I had with its inconsistent pacing and overly long game length, these issues were not bad enough to ruin my experience and make me give the game anything less than what it deserves, a 10/10.… Expand

Which I quite appreciate as a guilty pleasure, but movies are short, even the bad ones. This is almost 30 hours of repetitive and objectively boring gameplay just to show you an hour of a cutscenes. To a point that i was recording to my Youtube channel and after 2 hours to the game on the scene that everybody knows i turn of everything, deleted my records and return the game this bad WTF. One the best games 4 years ago became the worst game i ever played hands down and i refuse to play with other character.

Instead, it was a depressing narrative with a plot that made little sense whatsoever. I seriously made this account to review this game because it was that bad. So bad, in fact, that I’m going to pretend it wasn’t canon and this game never existed. A revenge arc WITHOUT the revenge aspect. Does that make any sense? I absolutely love Joel and Ellie, and while I admit I Joel’s death didn’t come as a shock to me it was the poor writing and terrible plot that ruined the game for me. Why would I feel any sympathy for characters that butchered Joel? I understand why Abby wants Joel dead. In fact, I actually really liked her connection to Joel- being the daughter of the Fireflies surgeon. However, Joel was never a perfect character. We loved him because he was flawed. The game just feels so artificial in coercing scenes to make you sympathize with her when that can never be the case. To make matters worse, they force you to play as her for 6+ hours in an irrelevant story line about Scars just to put more hours into a game. Playing as the person who killed our beloved main character Joel. To make matters even more terrible, we play as Abby and beat the ever loving crap out of Ellie. Fun. In an entire plot about going from A to B to C and killing people from Abby’s crew, it was just so boring and unoriginal. Last of Us was unique with its powerful story telling. In this game, the narrative was so weak. It focused on shocking the audience with random jump scares and random sequences that don’t make sense (the pregnant woman Ellie killed. Of course she wouldn’t say she’s pregnant while Ellie aims a gun at them, attacks her, and would conceal her stomach with heavy clothing.. because then we couldn’t have that gasp moment right??) While Ellie kills everyone and their grandmother for revenge- with stealth and stabbing people in the back and through their throats- she apparently has a change of heart at the end when fighting Abby. Does that make any sense to you? The woman who killed Joel, murdered Jesse, bit off her two fingers, and almost slit pregnant Dina’s throat she just lets her go? She definitely would’ve killed her at that point. Why would she act like a samurai and want to fight Abby honorably? The whole “lets fight! Make the first move. Or I will kill Lev.” The whole I can’t let you leave bit. That’s not Ellie. She’s an avenger. With her resolve, she would’ve stabbed her once she cut her down from the pillar. Ellie didn’t need to think twice when killing Nora. She left Dina to travel across the country, again, to end it once and for all. What a joke that she just magically changed her mind.

    The worst part about this game is how Naughty Dogs butchered the characters you cared most about in TLOU1. I guess Tommy is fine but lost his eye and his brother. But Joel was killed even though he wouldn’t have placed himself in that situation but sure. Whatever. Then, Ellie doesn’t avenge him. Ellie loses everyone she ever cared about. She can’t even play the guitar. Why not give her a break? All for some stupid unrealistic and artificial plot about revenge not being the answer.. This would only make sense if Ellie actually killed her. I hope this game gets the flaming it deserves. It just destroyed this franchise. Couldn't understand how an experienced man who was in hiding trusted a group of armed people that he just met and got slaughtered like a pig. Story and narration was poor, characters blunt and unlikable. For me really bad decision whoever chose this scenario just shot Naughty Dog in the foot.

    so the obvious elephant in the room is joels death its fine to kill a main character its happened in alot of fiction but the way they did it i would call tasteless the first torture him with a golf club but not kill him and this happens after joel saves abby's life then when ellie shows up abby kills joel and Manny walks up and spits on his corpse and insults him it feels like a slap in the face to fans cause it wouldve been fine to kill joel and he didnt even need to have a heroes death but the way they went about it wasnt right either the spit on him and then later on expect you to play as abby and then even later they expect you to beat up ellie as abby its just not right. on a side not abby isnt trans i know she looks like it and i kinda thought at first she was but shes actually just a buff woman as confirmed by the director and others so thw murder of joel wasnt done for some lgbtq agenda.

    the actual trans character lev or his original name lily was handled very well in my opinion they brought attention to it but only for a minute just like how they handled ellies lesbian relationship with riley it just to give background detail and not to encompass there entire character and i quite liked lev.

    another thing its very uncomfortable having ellie have sex with dina yes nothing is shown and it cuts to afterwords and this has nothing to do with lesbians it has to do with the fact that we watched her grow up and it just feels uncomfortable to see that its like watching your own daughter have sex you wouldnt wanna do that there were better ways to handle that and once again i wanna point out its not cause there lesbians i actually like ellie and dinas relationship.

    also the game trys to make you feel for abby but constantly has her be a peice of **** as well and its annoying like joel saves her she kills joel out of revenge, owen is dating and has mel pregnant so she **** owen so the game knowing you would think shes ****ty immediately trys to show her feeling guilty for lev and his sister to try to make her seem like a good person cause she cares the she lies at nora to the hospital saying owen is the one losing his arm not to mention the obvious she cost all of her friends lives because of her ****ty revenge on joel which could have the same said for ellie as well though not every body dies obviously.


    so at the end the game has you fight abby as ellie which why would you wanna fight the girl that you saved in the first game? Then you proceed to beat the **** out of her as abby, then she lets ellie live and leave time passes then ellie hears about abby in cali then it shifts to abby in cali for a short bit there then back to ellie in cali kill random people find abby fight abby and then see a flash back of joel just sitting on a porch no words nothing then ellie stops trying to kill her and lets her leave the whole cali section feels too long and un needed that whole thing couldve happened in Seattle and been fine.

    Its a shame that ND realy published this game as an Sequel of TLOU and made the year 2020 even worse for me.Should be called ,,The Last Game of Us“!

I would love to know what, if any, changes were made to the story after the leaks came out. We know ND were scrambling to do..something. My guess would be altering the scenes which were deceptively used in the trailers as one area, but do you think they also adjusted parts of the initial story? Would love to know that answer.

    The inconsistencies with how the character of Joel reacted prior to his death has been discussed ad nausea-um and they would be critical errors in story writing, but the endless elements which seem to be 'spite' written as an FU to the fans lingers throughout. How many of these were added after the leaks? That's what I would love to know.

    It's hard to understand the trend in all areas of media and entertainment of 'punishing' fandoms from any business perspective. It seems as companies believe they will somehow convert people to their political agenda over time even if they have to sacrifice a franchise here and there. They are making huge mistakes if this is their thinking.

    No doubt, TLOU2 will initially make bank so we won't see the 'get woke, go broke' effect immediately. The reverberations across the board is where it will be felt and it will be crushing for the gaming industry as it was for the comics industry.

    Essentially, any story driven by agenda over plot stands out like neon green nose in insincerity and ends up doing far more harm to any political cause intended due to the resentment generated.    … Expand

After all 6-7 years of waiting, all we've got is such a poor story with too many plot holes. Neil Druckmann didn't do his job well, for more exactly he did it terribly. Here are details of what I think about this game:

    Pros:
    - Game-play: good
    - Sound: great!
    - Graphic: very good
    - Environment: very good

    Cons:
    - story: terrible (the way Joel gave up his life, the unreasonable ending, etc)
    - plot holes: disgusting
    - character design: fairly okay
    - character development: unreasonably ridiculous
    - We gamers and players are forced to play Abby, and have no option to choose to deal with her at the end of the game. We don't like it !!! You tried to bring much more back-story of Abby to force us to feel with her, to make her a new main playable character, right after she killed Joel in a dirty way. Now that's the most terrible writing in history. Don't play with human emotions!    … Expand

But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
