First of all, just to address the constant "review bombing"... Most of those who have rated it between 0-4 have most likely not even played a minute of the game, they're just going by the spoilers before release because they're mad about it. Well guess what?.. some of them were actually incorrect anyway! I won't do a long drawn out review type rating, but what I will say is that Part II isFirst of all, just to address the constant "review bombing"... Most of those who have rated it between 0-4 have most likely not even played a minute of the game, they're just going by the spoilers before release because they're mad about it. Well guess what?.. some of them were actually incorrect anyway! I won't do a long drawn out review type rating, but what I will say is that Part II is incredible from start to finish, I actually enjoyed the 2nd half more than the first which I didn't think I would, especially due to how different it is (spoiler free). The graphics are one of the best I've seen on ps4, the facial expressions especially are excellent and really show the emotions of each character. The gameplay itself is incredible, it's just an extension of the original, but made better. The story itself has jaw dropping moments, and then the quieter and more peaceful ones. All in all I would recommend this game to all of the returning fans of the original, as it will not disappoint. What I liked about it most was that at several moments throughout I felt like it was nearing the games end, but then more kept coming, absolutely amazing. My one gripe is actually collecting parts/materials/ammo, this seems to be a bit less responsive than the first game, but we can't have it all! Expand

She validates segments of the population who've been told to hide who they are. She's extremely realistic within that population. As Ashley Johnson said, all the tomboys and misfits can sit at my table. I also loved her relationship with Dina. I didn't want to play Abby at all, so when I reached a point of sympathy and even liking for her, I knew Naughty Dog had done their job. I also like how it set up an obvious opening for part 3 at the end. Gameplay was fun. There were some improvements in weapons and stealth tactics from the first game. Lying prone and crawling were cool. I love stealth, and this game is excellent for that. To all those I keep reading "I'm not a homophobe but" just remember that "but" negates what came before it. I wouldn't have considered you to be homophobes if you weren't constantly saying you aren't. I believe that many have their balance challenged by two women who don't need men to survive, which is also a huge part of the game's strength. Stop with the online bullying. I cannot wait for 3 and for the HBO series. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has a story which is right up there with the one of the first game.
The gameplay and the leveldesign are the best that i have ever seen and the attention to detail is massive!
But there are some things that are so unique about it:
One night i texted my friend who also played the game and said: "Abby is a really nice person
if you dont think of what she did to Joel". The next thing i was going to say was: "But i am trying to forgive her..." but at the moment i typed it in I was like: wait a minute, thats exactly what Ellie told Joel at the very end. "I dont think I can ever forgive you for that... but I would like to try". In a video about the game i heard the statement: "You play the game, but even more the game plays with you."
With things like above and many others this statement couldnt be more true.
Not only the in game characters are in a conflict, but the player is too with the characters, their choices and the choices he takes by himself.
It takes some time to understand the game completely, but it is a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I have never left a review before for anything on this site, and actually just created an account to leave my two cents on this one. I literally just finished it this morning, and now that I can finally indulge in the reviews WITH spoilers, I am simultaneously saddened by the online vitriol from internet trolls and relieved that more in-depth reviewers were left feeling equally as confused as I am right now.

I want to just focus on the story with this review. I completely understand what Naughty Dog was trying to do to make us feel like every character was flawed, and that the world of The Last of Us is inhabited by far more darkness than light. That being said, it was very difficult to play as Abby for the 2nd half of the game. I found myself rooting for each member of her posse to be taken out. It felt as if I were playing Bill in the Kill Bill movies. It didn't feel right, even with the Lev/Yara storyline. I think if Abby had killed Tommy or Maria while on the run with Lev/Yara from the WLF, or something along those lines, I think I would have felt a lot more invested in her story, even if it still ended up with her killing Joel, but towards the end of the game (when she realizes he killed her father).

The nihilism of the world of TLOU comes through loud and clear in this chapter, and I applaud Naughty Dog for being brave enough to put their vision out there, regardless of the inevitable backlash. My hope is that whenever they come out with part 3, they wrap up the storylines in such a way as to redeem both Ellie and Abby, and consequently make the infinte sadness of part 2 worth something.

**Side note: I loved the Lev and Yara characters. Sexual identity is 100% self-determined, and I appreciate them working that into the story. If coming out in today's society is difficult, doing it as Lev did is even more impressive. More practically, it lends a real legitimacy to their escape from the Seraphites, rather than simply waking up and saying, this is wrong. Bravo.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After the end of the first part, I felt the finished story, so I didn't think there would be a second part. At the time of the announcement of the game in 2016, i was still delighted with this, and waited for the release of the game, periodically replaying the first part. knowing how they like to post various rumors, I avoided all information about the game in order to dive into the game on my own. In the first hours, I got an unexpected pain from the plot twist, but continued the game, I wanted to understand that everything was not done in vain, and everything has a logical development. Unfortunately, my hopes were dashed. The illogicality of actions began with the behavior of Joel, who changed in character and now trusts the first person who comes across and tells all the information about himself: where he lives, what he and his brother do, what their names are, although it is obvious that nobody in this world can no longer be trusted if you never knew him. As a result, the character of both Joel and Ellie changed. The supporting characters are just dummies, without an interesting story and any logical actions.
Especially pleased with the pregnant doctor, who has nothing to do and she went to fight in the last month, just delirium. Already now it is difficult for me to continue to write a review, with each written word I am more and more in pain from what continuation they made on the first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The storyline is an utter mess, filled with bland characters and awkward dialogue. The game touches on interesting themes and ideas but the writing just isn't good enough to make you care.

One of the main themes the game tries to explore is violence and whether or not it's justified. It tries to get us to think about how a violent act can create a cycle of violence that only leads to more misery and loss for everyone.

One of the problems with this is that it's completely at odds with the gameplay. You are given an incredible array of customizable weapons and throughout the game, you murder so many people in all kinds of gruesome and horrific ways. The game even gives you achievements based on upgrading your weapons to a high level so they obviously want you to care about this side of things.

You're also made to kill dogs and people to progress the story, you don't even have a choice it literally makes you stab dogs and beat people to death. This doesn't make sense because the game wants you to question your actions as a player but then the game forces you to do things you have no control over.

The other problem is that the game brutally removes a main character from the first game and then half way through makes you play as the character that kills said character. It's not for a short time either, it's literally half the game. This decision has been praised as being 'bold' and 'brave' by some and in a way that's true but that doesn't mean it's good or that it was the right decision.

The main reason anybody is buying this game is because they were fans of the first game. The main reason people loved it so much was because of the relationship between our two protagonists. The relationship between Joel and Ellie is the heart of the entire series and it's the reason people bought this game.

The decision to kill off one of them isn't the issue, it's how and when it happened and what followed. Popular protagonists have been killed off again and again in every type of media. It happens in Games, TV shows, Movies and Books, and as long as it is handled well and progresses the story in a satisfying way people are fine with it.

This game fails to do that.

They literally tore out the heart of the series and nothing that followed made it worth it. The storylines and relationships that follow are nowhere near as compelling and emotional as the relationship between Joel and Ellie in the first game. They are pretty to look at and there are some nice set-pieces but they don't feel like they matter simply because you don't care that much about the characters involved.

They could have made a compelling, engaging, emotional storyline that challenged the audience but when you remove the heart of the series it's almost impossible to do that. It's very difficult to get people to care about a story if they don't care about the characters involved. The emotional core of the series died about two hours in and in a game that is driven by its narrative this is a huge issue as it makes everything that follows feel a bit empty and meaningless.

They try their best but they gave themselves a mountain to climb and they never make it to the summit. They really try their best to make you care about the people involved but none of them are all that engaging, empathetic, or interesting especially in contrast to Joel and Ellie's relationship in the first game.

I guess the question is why?

Why did they decide to go in this direction with this game? The game director Neil Druckmann said before releasing the game that "We knew people were going to hate it".

I don't understand this at all, who is the game for then? If you knew that fans were going to hate it then why make this game? I understand not wanting to write a safe, fan service driven storyline but I don't get why you would write a story that fans would really despise.

I don't know it just feels like they tried way too hard to subvert expectations and in doing so ripped out the emotional core of the entire series in an extremely unsatisfying way. It feels like a wasted opportunity to not just make a great sequel but to make more great games after this.

I would have been fine with it, but they completely screwed this story up and actually wanted to brainwash you into thinking that Abby is actually good person. This is complete nonsese and not only that, they let her go at the end of the game. But biggest mistake of this game was that they force you to play as Abby for over 10 hours after she brutally murders first game's main character. Equal situation would be, if Doom Guy would get killed and you would have to play rest of the game as Demon who killed him and at the end Demon gets away and they wanna brainwash you into thinking that Demon was actually good guy. I feel absolutely nothing towards this series anymore, this second part completely ruined my interest in first part, forever. Because now first part is completely pointless, whole adventure in first part is no pointless. Awful writing, awful story, awful characters, overall bad game and also example how never, never treat your main characters. Expand

How do you go from a great first installment with an amazing touching story and characters to suddenly turn full SJW and make garbage like this. This is the future of identity politics in gaming. But all of that is **** useless because the story is awful. One of the main characters is killed in a brutal way at the beginning of the game, and then they force you to play as his killer for at least 1/3 of the game. They try to make her likeable but it only makes the game worse, she's not funny, loveable, she just a forced character that should never have seen the light of day. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where do you even start...?

People on subreddits and different media outlets called out the people who saw the leaks. They were called homophobic, transphobic, and all sorts of things.

I consider myself an intelligent person, and as such, I've never cared for sex, gender, or affiliation in the games. I consider myself open minded, and never had a problem with anything, as long as it made sense, and it the story was written well.

Obviously, I had no problem with Ellie loving women. It was hinted at in the DLC of the first game, and it played out in this one without any kind of issues. (The love triangle with Jesse, Dina being pregnant, and pregnancy giving Dina a plot armor was kinda meh though)

But oh boy, the writing in this game. It's unbelievable. It's just ... wow.

The man who taught Ellie how not to trust strangers, just randomly saves someone (doesn't even care if she's infected or not, because you know, it's not like there's an apocalypse happening). He goes one step further, he says "oh you live there with God knows how many of your buddies? Sure let's go", and then he practically introduces himself "Hey, I'm Joel". Of course Abby instantly knows it's the Joel she's looking for, since she saw the town 4 minutes ago with probably hundreds of people, and she already confirmed on Facebook, that there's only one Joel in there.

So she goes on and brutally murders Joel. She murders Ellie's father figure right in front of her eyes. I expected Joel to die in the game, but definitely not like this. Disrespectful would be putting it lightly. Even the game devs said that they want to create a meaningful story, and not base this on shock value. Well, guess what this is. (Yes, shock value).

So, after this, you're kinda left hanging and thinking, "okay, but they had Joel in so many places in the trailers, this can't be real". It is. Most of the scenes you saw are flashbacks that are just too short, but still show you the potential in this game. The thing it could have been with good writing. In other parts, Joel simply wasn't there. ND put him there for you to buy the game obviously. Calling this false advertising might be going a bit too far I guess (I'm not a legal expert though), but it's certainly a dick move which will cause some loss of trust among the community's members.

Through the flashback scenes by the way, Ellie will learn the truth about the ending of the first game. She then starts hyperventilating and crying, because she didn't get to die. Yes. She's crying because she survived. The game practically tells you that there was only one doctor who could make the cure in the world (lol) and he's dead now because of Joel. You're not allowed to think that maybe, MAYBE the fireflies wouldn't have been equipped enough to start producing serums for EVERYONE, or even create the serum AT ALL. Joel is painted as the evil being that destroyed humanity's last hope. (You had this question popping up at the end of the first game as well, but back then, you were allowed to think about it). I saw a Youtube video discussing this (sorry, I don't remember the channel) and the guy mentioned that he wouldn't give up his life for anything at 14 years of age. Well, I wouldn't either.

    So what's after this?

Well, you go to Seattle, murder every living being associated with our great friend, Abby. Along your journey here and there, you will encounter the religious (? I couldn't really figure out) cult, the Seraphites, that just kill for fun. Obviously the message here is... Religion bad? I don't really know.

Also, did I mention you play as Abby for 8-10 hours? Oh yeah, you have to play as Joel's murderer, and what's worse, they'll try to get you to actually like her. I mean... If they change the ending, and take these hours out of the game, it might not even be as bad as it is.

Before the ending, there will be a few nice moments (mostly flashbacks), and some horroristic ones. And of course, endless, useless violence. Ellie freaks out because she murders a pregnant woman (in self defense, since as she's about to lower her guard, they approach and try to kill her), and Abby comes back from her tour with her new friend. They fight, but end up going their separate ways after that.

And the ending... You actually find Abby, and force a fight, but since you have a vision of JOEL (who was brutally murdered in front of you) you decide - after murdering half the United States - that it's actually not worth it... ok. You also lose a couple of fingers.

I'm not an expert on changing hands with guitar, but she definitely has 5 fingers on the other hand, and with 3 fingers, you can play pick, slap, or fingerstyle. So she leaves the guitar, obviously.

We get a final scene with Joel, so after all this, you may feel a bit better.

I think this game was not developed to be naturalistic, it was just developed by a psychopath.

    It will get GOTY ofc

    4/10 for me. Visuals.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Technically amazing game, wonderful locations, character models look good, gameplay is similar to previous game.

Negatives outweigh the positives, tremendously. The story is abhorrent in every sense of the word. Logically, it doesn’t make too much sense in grand scheme of the overarching plot. It almost feels as if TLOU1 and TLOU2 are in entirely different universes. While it might be innocuous at first, the romance/sexual plots become increasingly contrived and painfully exasperating. The juxtaposition of multiple sexual trysts in a apocalyptic setting make the game jarring, and at points unbearable. There is one sexual encounter that is completely tasteless, and actually felt ashamed viewing it, much without my consent. The emotional highs are at best counterfeit of any actual human response. It feels as if the characters become bizarre caricatures of what somebody who has never interacted with society would think normal people would behave. If someone told me the story was written by a pre-pubescent teen tasked at writing a zombie holocaust melodrama, i would believe them. It’s that bad. Shallow and devoid of any realistic emotional nuance, this game is a dud and falls flat, far beyond the expectations of the first game.

I would not pay the admission price for this game, wait to get it on cheap, or find another way to play it. The asking price is to much for such a abomination of story telling.

Exploring the roots of the virus? New adventures with both Joel and Ellie? F*** no.Let's kill a beloved MC for shock value, demand players to play a shallow character (joel saves her life and she just shotguns and golfs his head in) that no one gives two **** about,
plot the entire game on revenge after revenge and in the end force our character to do exactly what most players dont want.Plus there is so many plotholes through it all,and most character's are like "Hey it's me this is my story"(and one in particular just exists to justify a pregnency, then dies like a **** dog) and then we never see them again.

A bleak trudge through a largely disappointing series of combat encounters that relies on shock value to carry its clumsily-paced story. The gameplay has seen some improvements from the previous entry and the environments and character models are impressive, but the whole experience feels needlessly maudlin, dwelling on traumatic events with an insistence that borders on pornographic.

There’s something off with the tone of this one, in comparison with the original, beloved game, and the difference is jarring enough to keep me from enjoying either the story or the generally repetitive, uninspired gameplay.

If this were an original IP, it would be much easier to rate it higher. To evaluate it as a story in a different genre, and praise its gorgeous environments. But as it stands, as a sequel, it fails to successfully deliver its simple message, ending on a note that feels pompous and ridiculously proud of itself even as it lands its last, resounding note (and dialog scene) with a hilarious lack of self-awareness.

There's a thin line between hiding things on trailers to let the players experience the story without spoilers and creating false cutscenes for the trailers which is what happened here.

Probably the best looking console game so far, incredible facial animations and motion capture with mostly good voice acting, the problem is that this things alone can't make a good game without a good story and even more so when we are talking about tlou sequel.

Everything that was loved about the first game is destroyed here, the characters from the previous game just don't feel like themselves, there are many other plots that I can imagine in seconds that would be way more interesting than this revenge story, there are just so many questions that end without an answer.

In terms of story, part II is an inferior game, gameplay is improved but becomes boring way before the game ends.

Let's just say I feel betrayed, the game fails at making me feel empathy for the new characters and the ending "missed the notes" it desperately wanted to make me feel.

Most fans should stick with the first one, the message there is powerful, here it's hollow just because.

This game is not special, the plot is cheap and there is nothing unique about it or the characters involved in it. The game constantly tries to force strange things in, like being trans or whatever. It all felt out of place. There no issue with the character being trans, but why did the game make it a big deal?! It had NOTHING to do with ANYTHING. at all. It just left me in the same state i was in for 90% of the game, which was that i just wanted to get to the next section so i could just know what happens next. Surely, the way this game started, there must be a reason. there must be some sort of redemption..

And i only kept playing because i wanted ellie to do just ONE thing by the end of the game. JUST ONE. and even then it wouldn't be fully redeemed for how they treated beloved characters from the first game.

And so i get to the end of the game, and i didn't even get what i wanted. (Pretty sure, what everyone wanted). Instead i got a boring, terrible, awful, nonsensical ending. Where everything that was experienced (as horrible as it was) was all for nothing.

If the game ended with ellie waking up and the whole thing being a dream, it would have been a better game. That's how awful this steaming pile of garbage is. Stay away from this game if you wish to hold good memories of LOU1.

Disappointing to say the least. The gameplay hasn't really changed that much since the previous instalment. For 2013 the gameplay was fantastic but I felt it was at best routine and at worst felt bored. I still like the crafting mechanics but felt it could have been improved seeing as a similar AAA title 'Days Gone' had done this element better in their game last year. I discovered that I had a lot of glitches in my playtrue. I ran into instances when fighting enemies where I fell through walls into nothingness repeatedly. Other times, my character became stuck on invisible ladders while climbing walls. If it happened once or twice, I would let it slide but it felt like the game was made with a first day patch in mind. From a graphics standpoint, I expected much more. The graphics are improved since the last game circa 2013, which is expected, yet are not as groundbreaking as I have heard from friends. They are quite similar if not slightly worse than the graphics from 'RDR2' and 'GOW' which came out more than two years ago. That being said, the graphics were one of the things I enjoyed about the game. The story was difficult to get through. I was able to understand characters motivations but felt that the execution was lacking. I enjoyed Ellies relationship with Dina but could not connect with any of the other new characters in the same way. I felt that Jesse's character in particular could have been fleshed out more given the games running time, which ran longer than the first. It made me hard to sympathise with these new characters when the revenge plot kicks in. I think the game lacks the ambiguity of its predecessor. The first game made characters organically feel grey. Joel, Marlene, Bill and Ellie all had their own intentions that you could understand even if you disagreed with it. Most of the characters in the first seemed to show human emotion towards their actions, both the good and the bad yet the sequel strays from this. Even the worst characters in the first showed a glimpse of humanity in their actions yet the sequel takes all of the humanity out of the characters. Overall, in a story driven game if you find yourself at times bored and at others wishing to play other excellent story driven games such as 'Life is Strange' or 'Telltales TWD' then you know the story has issues. game of the century, the worst.
7 years, a great IP, destroyed by Neil. You are a shame in the game world. burn in hell.
Political correctness is the most disgusting thing in this world.
The only meaning of this game is to let players recognize the ugly face of the media.

TLOU 1 was about a person who lost everything and through a harrowing adventure relearns to love again and also decides the fate of the human race, just one of the best stories ever told.

The last of us 2 is about some hormonal teens that think more with their genitals than brains, with motivations that change like the wind, and do nothing of any importance throughout the entire game.

SUMMARY: Story driven game that fails ultimately in its delivery of a simple core message. Upon reflection, my time feels wasted and no satisfaction from playing this desperate struggle of trying to tell a coherent story thats on jumbled around. GAMEPLAY: It comes secondary and grows repetitive so fast.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay and the mechanics of The Last of us 2 are pretty much what you would've expected. Some new features make it more dynamic than the previous game and although not very innovative it still works pretty well. Players who liked the last game will surely enjoy this one too. But all the sneaking and fighting was never the point of this franchise. It was the story. And herein lies the big problem. Be warned, there are massive spoilers up ahead.

Joel's murder is staged in a way that we, the player, instantly share Ellie's longing for revenge. As we set out to confront his murderer, every action is driven by that desire and while being very brutal we have little compassion for the organization said murderer is part of. During her journey we begin to understand that Ellie will have to sacrifice her own well-being and emotional health in order to avenge Joel's death. The arch of tension is build up very nicely until the point of Ellie's confrontation with Abby. And then nothing. Just a gigantic cliffhanger. As we desperately want to see how the encounter ends we are thrown back three days just to play as Abby. And here is where, in my opinion, the game takes a very wrong turn.
We experience Abby's own sad background story, find out Joel killed her father and are tangled up in an unconvincing love triangle. Abby starts to question her believes and changes from cold blooded killer to a caring person. She shows compassion towards her enemies and saves two children. And yet we couldn't care less. This is because from the very first minute we slip into her role, we see through Naughty Dog's blatant attempt to make us relate to her and to see more in her than just Joel's killer. Even worse, we feel lectured. It is as if the developers are teachers who are resolving a conflict by forcing us to understand our opponent's motives.
Abby's crime is so heinous and leave us so shocked that we just don't care. As her story unravels piece by piece we get more and more frustrated as we can't build a connection with her but still have to play just to advance the plot. We understand and comprehend why she did what she did, we may even come to the conclusion that we would've done the same. But we still care to much about Ellie's loss. A few hours of gameplay as her main antagonist is not enough to forget that, let alone sympathize with Abby.
Unfortunately this is so annoying, obvious and unconvincing that the experience is ruined beyond repair.
Everyone old enough to play this game knows there are always two sides to the same coin. The message of the game is clear. The way it is presented, however, does not work and leads to a very frustrating and disappointing experience.

You need full attention, I mean FULL attention to really understand the story and it's message and it's much more than just revenge, it's forgiveness but also having a peace with yourself and how you deal with grief and anger. 25 hours of mostly killing people is not enough to tell a big story like this, and they're using these little subtle hints to tell what is actually happening and most people won't notice these hints, which hurts the game for those people. The game needs more time (not gameplay time) so they don't need use these subtle hints to tell the story. Plus it's not a straightforward storytelling, which is not ideal for the people that play the game intermittently, those people would forget what has happened in the game. For me it's a great solid game, with amazing acting and animation (the best I've ever seen), marvelous soundtrack, fun stealth, satisfying combat (some of it dragged out more than I would like), a little confusing story at first but not anymore. And that is 8.8/10. But I will post it 10 because so many fake players giving it 0 which is not fair at all, so a 10 for balance things out. Expand

The Last of Us (2013) was one of the best games I have ever played in my life, hands down. It always felt like more of a movie than a game, because of how well written it was, with the initially reluctant partnership of Joel and Ellie, the ups and downs, the wise crack cheesy jokes, the environmental storytelling, and the father & daughter bond that they shared and developed throughout their journey. The progression and character development that took place was truly something special that cemented these two as one of gaming’s iconic duos.

The Last of Us II (2020) does not have the same deep emotional connection between any of its characters and it focuses more on preaching personal politics of its developers (and one absolutely out-of-touch consultant), rather than crafting an interesting, competent story with established characters. What you end up with is simplified, petty, revenge plot, that does not break new ground or take any risks.

I’ll get the good stuff out of the way first. Naughty Dog is incredible when it comes to crafting atmospheric games with excellent audio, the wilderness of Jackson, and the streets of Seattle are an absolute master craft in environmental design and graphical quality, not unlike the first game, but certainly enhanced to a stunning level. I also have no complaints with Gustavo and his competence with crafting an excellent soundtrack that fits the dreary, post-apocalyptic setting.

Where do I begin with the bad? There is about 15 hours of walking around with fluffy dialogue thrown in while you explore an empty landscape to find a few extra crafting materials, where you end up in a gunfight or infected encounter that you will try and stealth your way through, but ocassionally fail so that a cutscene or set piece can play out. Rinse and repeat.

This game does nothing new, it has identical gameplay mechanics to the first game (with a few Uncharted mechanics thrown in) which, while that may not seem like a bad thing, makes the game rely heavily on its narrative to differentiate its experience from its beloved predecessor. The problem is, its narrative and character development are subpar at best, and downright awful at worst.

The story tries to make you take it seriously, but after a couple hours of gameplay, you realize that this game has forced you into a standard and contrived revenge plot that you have seen 1000 times before. The back half of the game has you playing as Abby, who regardless of what she has gone through, I have zero attachment or sympathy for, and again, only to jump back to Ellie, who I am now starting to dislike? Who thought this plot was a good idea seriously?

Anita clearly came in and made sure that all the diversity checkboxes were hit, white men are incompetent, all the females have no physically attractive characteristics, and to mention bigotry and fascism wherever possible. Though I’m sure Neil had most of this setup already. You pile this crap on top of the way employees were treated, Sony’s censorship of Youtubers who discussed leaks, and add in an incoherent, generic story… you realize that there’s not much here that you haven’t seen or heard (because the leaks were accurate) before.

All of this, culminating in an underwhelming ending that is an absolute slap in the face to everyone who played and loved the first game. Last of Us (2013) DID NOT NEED A SEQUEL. It is an absolute step down from the first game, and gets a 4/10 from me. This is game is an outright travesty, and I'm sure it'll win awards and accolades because of the sales, progressive demeanour, and paid off critics, but you would be a fool to believe that this is anything but another corporate cash grab on an established IP. This is the gaming industry now.

If your central premise in a game is to show me the futility of violence and revenge then don't make a game that 1) glorifies violence like some sick snuff movie and 2) force the player down a story path where I as the player have no agency over what happens but just partake in a 20+ hour linear quick time event. The second point is the most grievous. It shows both a lack of skill and laziness in creating a game that both wants you to experience a story or moral, but does so by not giving me the chance to make those decisions myself as the player, thus I don't really care.

The story was uninspired and simple. The characters were unlikeable and unbelievable. The violence and the bizarre sex scene where over the top and out of place. Sometimes, not showing has more impact. Sometimes, less is more.

As a game, this sucks and is a waste of my money. This would have been better suited as a movie, as that is what this is. A 20+ hour long interactive movie where I have no agency over what happens, about characters I don't care about and a story that is uninspired.

The world, music and characters that accompany the story end up creating something memorable, it is not a perfect game, but it is a masterpiece that takes video games to a new level. Expand

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
