Gameplay, sound and graphics are top notch as always. But the clincher is the story and the characters. Both feel like some fanfiction author got his hands on the script for this game. This game has one of the worst endings of all time of any piece of media. It will leave you a hollow shell of yourself.

So. The Last of Us Part 2. I frankly do not know where to begin. As many of my fellow reviewers, we have waited a total of seven years for this release. With high hopes, we set money aside and anticipated a masterpiece .. and we got one, but not in the way we expected.

The first half of TLOU2 (if you know, you know) was absolutely incredible. I loved EVERY second, every interaction, everything. From the spine chilling gurgle emanating from clickers that somehow sounds even more terrifying, to the incredible acting presented by Ashley and Shannon. From the glorious realm of Jackson and Seattle, and the simple track of snow later countered by the ghostly sighting of an abandoned city retaken, it was a masterpiece. Truly. The chemistry and bittersweet moments had me lulled into a sense of security that was later cracked into pieces, as to be expected. The first part deserves positive reviews. The same cannot be said for the latter.

I can see exactly what ND was trying to convey, the message they so horribly tried to send. However everything leading up to that message did not make it satisfactory. I did not care for the second half in the least, and even after letting it sink in, I did not end up changing my feelings or mind on the interactions at hand. Again, I see what they were doing, and I can see how they thought it would work, but the narrative was insanely weak. The half-a$$ed parallels and the "two sides of the same coin" (literally) sequence was just not where it should have been.

I love TLOU and TLOU2, and I will continue to support ND and if they do have the balls to make a third installment, I hope to every god and deity that they do it right.

I was a huge fan of the original TLOU, as well as the DLC that followed. The story, the characters and interactions, the emotional ties that were formed throughout playing were amazing.

But the story, the forcing of players to take on the role of Abby in order to try to force them to sympathize/empathize/relate to her and her decision making process is absurd.
Joel is done a horrible injustice in the game. Was there a way for them to kill off his character if they "had to" and not make the game suffer in the process? Of course there was.
Instead, Neil Druckmann (and almost assuredly Anna Sarkeesian) decided to spit in the face of all the true fans of the previous game and send players down a rabbit hole of bad story telling, with shockingly daft characters who make horrendous decisions that are contradictory at every turn and ruin what COULD have been the "Masterpiece" that the "professional reviewers" claim this game to be.
I have been playing games probably longer than many of the professionals have been alive for. I remember the first time I played Pong. I beat Adventure when it first came out. I had Colecovision, the Atari 2600 and still have my old Famicom NES system somewhere in storage (though it is long since dead). I am a gamer and I know that a good story with relatable and likable characters who make informed decisions and have sensible through lines are the most important thing to my gaming experience today. TLOU2 did not have any of that. Good for Sony and Naughty Dog for making piles of money, as that is (at the end of the day) what is most important to their bottom lines, but when PLAYERS say that this game will go down in history on the same level as The Last Jedi and season 8 of GOT, they are not being hyperbolic or evil...just truthful about how bad this game is, and how much more we (as PLAYERS) expected after 7 long years of waiting.

It would not be hyperbole for me to say The last of us is my absolute favorite thing across any medium. Whether it's movie's books or other video games, The last of us stands above all for me.. so after 7 years of waiting, to be presented with this story I am absolutely disgusted. Naughty Dog and Neil Druckman have absolutely failed this fan base and more importantly they failed Ellie. The sad attempt to humanize the character who brutally murders Joel was completely deplorable. Never have I spent so much time saying out loud during a game "I Don't Care!" as when I was forced to spend nearly half this game playing as Joels killer. News Flash Naughty Dog, nobody gives a damn about Abby. I literally made her die multiple times just because I hated her character so much. How you can possibly justify dedicating hours and hours of gameplay on her is nothing short of lunacy. Not to mention the list of supporting characters that get almost no development during that horrendous chunk of the gameplay. I got to a point where I did not want to play this game. It was so pathetically bad that I called Gamestop to try and return my Collectors edition. I thought to myself, "I'm willing to forgive all this garbage if only to see Ellie get her revenge". But no Naughty Dog... you screwed that up too. I have played the original Last of us 15 times through and can say without question that Ellie would not have let Abby just walk away. She deserved justice, she deserved better. Then at the end you just couldn't resist dicking her over a little more. Should we have Dina waiting to console her... Nahhh. Maybe tommy?... nahhh maybe we should let her keep her fingers so she can have a way to remember Joel by playing the Guitar... nahhh. The absolute failure of this game is reminiscent of The Last Jedi. You set yourselves up with the game of the decade. A game universally praised by critics and Fans alike. Yet you completely disembarked from all the things that made the first game such a masterpiece. Not to mention how you straight up Lied to everyone with your BS trailers depicting Joel in Seattle with Ellie. I don't know how this game could possibly get a score above like a 3 but these critics seem to be more interested in riding Naughty Dogs dick than calling them out. I can only give this game.a score higher than zero because of the relationship built between Dina and Ellie. A relationship and dichotomy you throw out the window halfway through the game and then completely torch at the end. Congratulations. You ruined my favorite Story. You have made the original Last of us virtually unplayable. I would've rather you never made a sequel than watch you disrespect and ruin the legacy of Ellie and Joel. I sincerely hope you're company will listen to the fans and address your failure. But I somehow doubt it. Expand

Yes, I'm also not a fan of the story in general or certain character decisions but personally it didn't ruin the fun for me.
Sure, weird to say about a story driven game/franchise but everything else just clicked for me and I love this game.
The world-building and the attention to detail is insane, I don't know what magic Naughty Dog did in the background to make this run on a PS4

The first game was truly the best gaming experience I had, the beginning of this game with that 'scene' had me moved like nothing ever before but it turns out it was done for shock value and their goal to empathize with the other character completely failed. What was the point of this I ask? Was the point for us to empathize with the other character because that clearly failed. Was the point for us to hate her? Well you clearly succeeded but I highly doubt that was the goal. Is it about love and forgiveness and losing everything you have? How does that work out when you brutalize your two main characters with no closure? Leave your audience feeling empty and devastated. If you play this game the last 'boss' fight had me punching square well into cutscene due to how much I despised the other character and not realizing that a cutscene was playing out and I had no control anymore. What is the point in us writing all of this if it's falling on deaf ears. Is Neil really this tone deaf? Maybe we should learn to unlove things that change in our life before they change us. Maybe we should learn to let go as Ellie had to learn to let go, maybe what we hold so dearly to us can ultimately ruin us and maybe just maybe that's the message they're going for? No it's not, they want us to learn to forgive but the path of destruction on your way to said forgiveness devalues that, not to mention it is not possible to forgive a character that you are forced to play with and beat down both of your favorite characters with. This truly was the last of us...fans leaving Naughty Dog. I guess the dreamers of the day are dangerous men after all Mr. Druckkman Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a slap in the face to everyone that loved the first game. Do not buy this and save your money. The truth and context of this game is much worse than the leaks. Before I get into one of the worst stories ever. The gameplay is very average in today's modern gaming generation. There are minor improvements from the first game and enemy AI is dumb as ever. There are more cut scenes and walking than actual gameplay. SPOILER ALERT..... they destroyed all of your favorite characters. They dumb down Joel's character on purpose to make him weak and stupid. In the first game he was very smart and had a ton of experience. He didn't even trust a guy that was sick on the road. He chose to run him over. Later we find out that stranger on the road was not sick and it was all a set up. They do everything to make you dislike Joel and continue to spit on him. They have a trans female/male shoot him in the leg and torture him with a golf club right in the first 2 hours of the game. They spit on him literally. They made Ellie unlikable and a selfish human being. She kills everyone and continued to blame Joel for saving her life. She cared so much in saving humanity because she has the immunity but instead she became a lesbian and chose not to reproduce. Let that sink in. She even let's Abby the one that tortured and murdered Joel in front of her get away with it. Abby also bit off two of Ellie's fingers. Her letting Abby go is basically saying Joel deserved dying. A loveable character who is the main character of the game. There was no justice for Joel. This game robbed everything from you just for shock value. The current narrative of destroying the male character to make the female character rise is very weak story telling. It is disrespectful to both genders. Females even hate it. Worst of all the pacing of the story is horrible. You literally play as Abby the character we hate for half the game. They tried so hard to make us like her but none of it worked. This game is a waste of time and money and should have never been created as a sequel. The critics are liars and they don't care about what the fans want. They only care about their political narrative and force you to like something that you will never accept. Then they insult you by calling you names because you don't like the product they are praising. They are the worst kind of human being. Trust the gamers that actually love playing the kind of video games you like. Those are the ones who you should listen to. Vote with your wallet and avoid this dumpster fire. Why care for a game created by a studio that is run by Neil Druckmann who is a male feminist and does not care about the fans and the people he works with. That's why 75 percent of Naughty dog left the company due to how he treated them. This game is created by people that don't care about you and backed by people that hate you. The game wasn't made for the fans and gamers. Vote with your wallets and avoid this at all cost. Especially how they are trying to trick everyone with false advertisement into buying this. Look it up on YouTube. Don't trust the shill media. Watch the negative videos about this game and you will see the truth. Long live Joel and RIP to The Last of Us franchise. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The scene in the museum with Joel and Ellie is so beautiful and it honestly bumped up the score a few points for me. But that doesn’t change the fact that the game falls apart when you play as Abby. I didn’t hate abby as a villain at first. Wasn’t the best, but she had an understandable motivation. The way she ended up killing Joel was written so lazily and the character deserved better, but i tried to believe that the game could somehow make it worth it in the end. The stuff with Ellie wasn’t bad. Not even close to as good as the first one, but not awful. What this game fails to realize is the attachment that everyone has to Joel and Ellie. I honestly believe that there was nothing the writers could have done to make us sympathize with Abby. We know what Joel did and we don’t care. We had a whole game to fall in love with him and that won’t change just because one of the many people he killed happened to have a daughter. To make it even worse, when you play as abby it has nothing to do with Ellie! It’s a completely different story and it feels so disconnected from the game. What made the first game good is the connection between Joel and Ellie. This game took that away and then tried to turn the two of them into the antagonist. I don’t understand how the writers would ever think we could sympathize with the person who killed such a loved character. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the mechanics, the sounds, the music, the maps, the characters aesthetics and layers of different groups we come across. I like that Joel was present through flashbacks so we felt his impact and presence however the way he died, face down and in front of his loved ones, seemed like a cheap attempt to create a traumatic motivator for Ellie. It made Abby look sadistic. Unfortunately making a character like this enjoyable to play is a difficult challenge and I feel they missed the mark. This would be an issue if this were a movie. Abby didn’t feel like a well developed character, it felt like the plot was written first and she was created to fit into the mirroring aspects too much. I respect what they were trying to do but the second half of the game was a chore to play though as a result. For me they lost this out engagement when they made us play as Abby, a character we don’t like, and get us to hurt a character we like, Ellie. Had we played as Ellie then we w old still have understood both characters perspectives but it wouldn’t feel so uncomfortable for players. Depressing films are fine. A depressing story in a game need much better characters and a hook that makes us enjoy playing them and this game missed than by forcing the ‘mirroring’ in the story writing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay is definitely improved compared to the first one and the story it tells of revenge is done so well. A lot of people leave reviews about the characters feeling undeveloped and terrible but I think they were written very well.

The only reason I give it a 9 instead of 10 is because of Abby. She seems like a completely different character when playing her in Jackson compared to Seattle and after what she did to Joel I found myself unable to sympathize with her at all. I felt great emotional connection in lots of the story with Ellie because Ellie's character has been developed and you can understand the loss which has driven her to want revenge.
Ellie is a great character to play as but with Abby I didn't like playing as her and I understand why her parts were in the game and I think the needed to be in the game but I think Abby's sections could've been shortened more to a length comparable to playing as Ellie in the first game. Playing as Abby annoyed me a bit with progression as well because when I was back to playing as Ellie again in Santa Barbara I had pretty much forgotten what kind of upgrades I'd put on weapons and stuff like that because they each are given their own progression trees and weapon upgrades.

Overall, I loved the story and the way it showed Ellie's quest for vengeance driving her down a dark path. I loved the flashback sequences with Joel, especially the last one which just made me even more distraught with his death. The main objection I have to the game is simply playing as Abby too much. Her story was good and I liked the characters she played with but this game is about Ellie so I think the split between them in gameplay should've been more like an 80/20 or 70/30 rather than 50/50.

First off, I'm a huge apocalyptic game fanatic, and I really liked The Last of us 1. I actually only recently played it. The game felt almost like watching a movie, which is what I was expecting with the second one. The voice acting is great, the score is haunting but the narrative was so odd. Forcing a player to play as a character that just murdered Joel. I guess this hurt more considering I just played TLOU1...
Too bad really, this had the potential to be something great, but I feel the injected politics ruined it.

The storyline of the game will leave so unsatisfied and angry. The whole ending makes the entire storyline about revenge feel pointless. There is absolutely no empathy for Abby and I wanted to die every time they make you play as her. what a waste of a sequel the only thing improved is the graphics.

I waited 7 years for this game and I don’t think I can say that I am satisfied with the game, but it was so good. I have felt rage, sadness and tons of other emotions in the 19 hours I have played this. This game isn’t about satisfying the gamers needs at all. Neil himself said that this game wasn’t gonna be fun to play. And it definitely wasn’t. But that shouldn’t effect one’s opinion. I thought the gameplay was amazing, the design and the sound design were the best, the characters were beautifully developed and the story was good! I found it so interesting to play from different perspectives which makes the game diverse and different. It stands out in a positive way. Expand

this game was phenomenal. it was nowhere near perfect, but i don’t think that it could ever live up to its predecessor no matter how hard they tried. the acting, the graphics, the environment, the characters, the improved gameplay... the only reason why i won’t give it a 10 was because of the weird pacing.

Funny how this political correctness history has a couple of years of lifespan and after a couple more democracy will change how we are supposed to feel and game will be autdated with its narrative boohoo, TLOU One however doesn't have this problem, because it contains "normality"!!!, an everlasting American country story that feels real because its legitimate. And the iconic guitar music fits it so perfectly.

    Things that are jacked up:
    - caricature of a character that Abby is
    - abbys forced indoctrination gameplay (speedruning it, regretting it, absolute no care). [why not make it into an extra story or dlc?] - abbys story characters feel like cutouts from 13reasonswhy teenage tv show or some **** like that. Owen, Mel? soulless people with stupid problems. Most interesting part is Levs shaved head lore. - when story needs it, characters we care about get disarmed, jumped and injured in the stupidest ways ever. - Ellie and Joel lost their balls somewhere

    Pros:
    - graphics, sigh
    - Ellie gameplay - great prone, craft mechanics, skirmishes feel great and unpredictable. But does pros really matter anymore? no. TLOUPart2 was supposed to be another masterpiece of a decade 10/10.
Even without Abbys part it would be just OK 8/10.
I give it a rating 3/10. But voting 0/10 to conquer the leftist meta agenda :)

But on the other hand, the story and the script that divide opinions and leave something to be desired, is a story that holds you to the end, a story that makes anger and the feeling of revenge enter the player, to disappoint it an empty ending. A ending that makes you think that everything you did in the game was in vain, all the losses were in vain, playing the TLoU2 campaign was in vain. What also hurt the players and fans of the game a lot was the main character, so striking, so loved, being killed in such a cowardly and very poorly told way. And still forcing you to play a good part of the game with the killer, "trying" to understand her side, but whoever played the entire first game, the game that made you admire, support Joel, failed to swallow Abby's story.

The killing of Joel in this way made the game realistic. It is really realistic for us to easily lose our loved ones in this universe as we easily kill people, but with a baseball bat? The visuals are stunning and the audio is great. Gameplay is almost the same as in the first game which is not a bad thing because i enjoyed it the last time. They added some cool new elements and it just plays good. Story has its moments, flashbacks and parts with Joel are amazing. It just shows why people loved the first game so much. It was kinda disappointing that they actually killed him of in the first 2 hours in the game and that his death wasn't really paid of the way it could have been. But hey. Nothing can be perfect right? It kinda bugged me that i actually enjoyed parts with Joel's killer more than parts with Ellie. Maybe because it was lacking something? Maybe some killed of character? Just maybe. The story overall was ok. Some plot hole here and there, some weird characters and so on. As I mentioned there were parts that i really enjoyed and parts and decisions i just can wrap my head around. It wasn't nearly as great as first game when it came out but I had good time playing this and maybe some day i will play it again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Many reviews suggest that The Last of Us Part II (LOUP2) forgets the relationship between Joel and Ellie and goes on a tangent in an attempt to be "artsy" or "deep". What people do not seem to realize is that even Part I had an overarching theme of morals and philosophy - through Joel and Ellie’s relationship, our two beloved characters. LOUP2 expanded upon this theme, with the addition of the ‘cycle of violence’, through the introduction of more characters. This, in some instances, did depict Joel, Ellie, and Tommy as antagonistic. With that said, I thought this was brilliantly portrayed by showing the same three days in Seattle from Abby and Ellie's perspective. When I see and hear people saying that it was "unbearable" to play as Abby, not only is it absurd but also thoughtless. Joel had killed a lot of people in the first game, and it would be foolish to assume that there weren’t going to be any repercussions of these actions. His role as the protagonist doesn’t, in any way, justify his wrongdoings.

Abby's story has been incredibly crafted. All of the WLF soldiers that went to Jackson City wanted revenge, but no one, including Abby, was expecting such brutality and aggression from herself. These actions of fury, however, were completely justified. The anger and rage that built up in Abby for 4 years, was released over those few minutes with the golf club and a cornered Joel. I was especially allured to one of Abby’s dreams in which she sees Yara and Lev, two kids who saved her life, hanging in Saint Mary’s hospital. The dream makes her feel uneasy and as though something was amiss, particularly in regards to Joel's death. So when she wakes up, she goes out of her way to help Yara and Lev in an attempt to balance her past damages.

The battle between the Seraphites and WLF continued the theme of the ‘cycle of violence’. I was especially enamoured by the player encountering collectible letters of several victims from the Seraphites and the WLF. We see the stories of people from both the WLF and Seraphites who are trying to protect their families and/or bring back food. However, they fall prey to the ‘cycle of violence’. We, as the player, sympathize with both sides of the war, making us question, “what is it all for?”. As Abby interacts with the two Seraphites Lev and Yara she comes to the same realization. That is why when she gets the opportunity, although filled with rage and ferocity, she rethinks her decision of killing Ellie concluding that no one would benefit.

A common complaint people seem to have is that Ellie should have killed Abby, which would have been a superficial ending to this game. Ellie has already, in an act of vengeance, killed a pregnant Mel and is left feeling traumatized by this event. Nonetheless, there would have been zero progression for Ellie's character if she had killed Abby. Furthermore, in the final moments when Ellie is drowning Abby, the scene cuts to the time she agrees to try and forgive Joel for what he did at the end of the first game. Her sparing Abby is her way of ending the ‘cycle of violence’; she was correcting Joel's mistake of starting the cycle.

People often argue, “Why didn’t Joel question Abby’s intentions?” and “why did he trust her?”. The flashbacks in this game are incredible and answer these questions. Each flashback showed progression in Joel's character - his evolution from the first game was evident - as he was beginning to trust others. Violence wasn’t the only solution. He was relaxed and, despite all the losses he faced, seemed happy. This is why, as a matured character, he assumes the good in Abby and decides to help her get away from the infected.

Nevertheless, I did think there were some pacing issues with the game. Both the "Seattle day 1" were monotonous and slightly repetitive. I also thought that the Santa Barbara chapter was elongated in the beginning. I would have appreciated more stealth kill animations - the same animation of Ellie stabbing with her knife became redundant. I also believe that Lev/Lily becoming an outcast due to her gender/sexuality was an engaging plot point. However, they had already hit the mark with inclusivity and representation with Ellie and Dina. Although I didn't find this to be a problem story-wise, Naughty Dog could have avoided the wrath of the internet by figuring another reason for her to be an outcast.

The addition of being able to squeeze through tight areas and the skill to go prone was innovative and made combat extremely enjoyable. Naughty Dog also took the time to make artificial intelligence smarter - giving all enemies and soldiers names was a small but important detail that further grounded the story.

Gustavo Santaolalla and Mac Quayle, the music directors, have created one of the best soundtracks to a game. Action sequences and emotional moments were beautifully backed with the music produced by these legends.

Gameplay - polished from the first, still a little clunky in closed spaces 8/10

    Score - amazing 10/10

Story - okay overarching story. To me the revenge theme is fine. Did I expect more creativity from ND? Yes. In addition, the small things that made me love TLOU 1 are lacking: the idle conversations of Joel and Ellie when exploring, Ellie learning how to whistle, the dad jokes, etc. In addition, the new characters are overall interesting, but were not fully flushed out. Some of their actions didn't make sense. We should have explored them more. Like, why did Dina go with Ellie, why does she care so much. Why did Jesse join them, why was did he forgive Ellie so easily being with Ellie. They did so much more with less time with Bill, Henry, Sam, Tess and Marlene than with these characters over 30 hours.
Despite this, I still liked the story. I really enjoyed Day 1 Seattle Ellie and the later half of Abbey's Story rallied hard (the attack on the Scar's Island was cool) - though I did not like Abbey's Day 1/Day 2 Seattle. I did enjoy seeing the characters again. I did enjoy the world of Seattle that was created.
So if this wasn't a sequel to one of the best games of all time the story would be good, but knowing what ND did before I cannot feel but a little disappointed. 6-7/10 depending on my mood.

Overall, I enjoyed the game. If you liked the last of us you will probably find parts of this game you enjoy. However, the story does pale in comparison to its predecessor.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
