This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot of people are complaining about this game when honestly it is a true masterpiece. The game does a superb job at creating an ending in which there is no right or wrong moral answer. Leaving it up to you to ponder about the ethics of revenge and whether an eye is really worth another eye. Throughout the game I struggled with the idea of Joel being being dead and brutally killed however it did make me realise that no matter how much I loved Joel and Ellie in the first game, was Joel right for killing everyone in that hospital? Now don’t get me wrong, if it was someone I cared about that much I would have done the same thing any day but it did make me wonder is 1 life that we’re so emotionally attached to and bias towards really worth more than a vaccine that could potentially help thousands of not millions? This game did a great job at planting a seed in the players brain to make them realise that we need to recognise our own biases and that there is always more than one perspective. Incomes Abby. Now I will say I did not like her at first and even now I’m very iffy with her but I do like a few things. First of all she brings a different perspective of loss with her father being the surgeon that Joel killed and rescued Ellie from. This is interesting as it pits biological loss to socially developed loss against each other. When I realised that Ellie’s situation and Abby’s situation were the exact same it made me think about what is morally and ethically right when it comes to revenge. Abby completed her vengeance at the beginning of the game but only to lose her friends afterwords. This has a pretty meaningful message and brings up the question. Does vengeance lead to a never ending cycle of violence in which no one prospers? At the end of the game Ellie finally gets her chance to kill Abby and take her vengeance but has a flash back of Joel dying. In this flashback I believe she realised that 1. this is not what Joel would have wanted and 2. That by doing this she would become the very thing she hates, killing a protector and raiser. Now let me explain, throughout multiple cutscenes we see Ellie tackle what happened at the hospital and start to grow further away from Joel but does not do so completely. Why? Because she still has love and respect for him for what he did and that he basically raised her as evident by the Museum flash back scene, she still cherishes moments they had. By killing Abby she’s be destroying Levs parental figure and be no better than Joel for murdering the hospital in which Abby’s father was the surgeon. So she comes to the choice to let her go. Now I know I know, I felt bad letting her go but understood why Ellie did it. After all these years she finally did something that she could be proud of and that gives her life purpose. She overcame loss not by taking a life but by giving hers a new purpose. When she left that guitar behind it was an indication that she has moved on and left the past behind. Who knows what’s to come next. But one things for sure, I’m playing. Thank you so much for reading this far. Now this is just my opinion. I am not right nor am I wrong. This was just my interpretation. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Like this game was written by a child who didn't even play the first game. They completely forgot that Joel is smart and unlikely to trust strangers. (If you played the first game you know this) Shoving him into a situation where he is helpless and giving him a pathetic death, he should've died to protect Ellie or something not this... I'm not mad that he died I'm mad at how he died and then they tried to make us sympathize with Abby. That did not work at all and I hated her all the way until the end and playing as her was boring. She deserved a death worse than Joel's but Ellie just walked away for no reason after everything she's been through to get to her and the hundreds of people she's killed. That would've redeemed the game if she at least got her revenge. This game was a disappointment and a waste of money. They ruined this franchise. I hope the writer for this game gets treated how they treated Joel. Expand

I had a small piece of hope that it would be at least somewhat good as I already expected Joel would probably die in the squeal just not in the way the leaks showed. When I played the game and saw how they made Joel/Tommy go against their characters, by telling these people where they live and their names when they do not know these people at all. The way Abby just kills Joel when at this point the player has no idea who Abby makes her insufferable. All the work they do to try and make her sympathetic does nothing. At the end of the game, I agree with Ellies's decision to still go after Abby cause 'it can't all be for nothing'. It does not make sense that she would almost just let Abby go, she had just killed a man to get information on where Abby is. The ending is inconsistent with Ellie's character, as the entire game she has been killing people to try and get to Abby, and it is stupid she did not just shoot her in the head. Ellie's ending is bad and she does not even get revenge if she had just killed her straight away all that would be different is she would still have 10 fingers. A waste of £160. Collapse Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game came out after 7 years of waiting. After telling one of the best stories portrayed in a video game drops the **** ball. The death of joel was almost enough for me to not want to play this game but I still gave it a fair chance. I thought what was clearly going to be a revenge story was still going to be great even though one of the best complex characters Naughtydog gave us was dead. Boy was I **** wrong. Besides giving us no true conclusion to the story you as a player are almost forced to like someone you clearly cannot. After Ellie goes after Abby to get her revenge you you as the player are forced to see the same techniques and tropes from the first game played out between Ellie and Dina/Abby and Lev. You see Ellie take the place of Joel wanting nothing but to get the job done while Dina tries to bond with you and almost make light of the entire journey youre on. If that isn't enough Dina plays almost no point in the game besides being a liability to you. She goes on the trip knowing full well she is possibly pregnant. She even states that shes at least a few weeks late on her period. If you know that you could possibly be pregnant why would you go on a trip where you could possibly die? Granted she does have this connection with Ellie but that connection isn't nearly strong enough for her to go on this revenge mission. Once she is outed as being pregnant she just stays in the hideout while Ellie goes alone until other characters join along on the revenge like Jesse. As the game progress's Ellie gets closer and closer killing every friend of Abby's only to decide not to continue after her because they don't have a lead. Throughout the entire time youre playing as Ellie you get flashbacks of Joel and Ellie together. Them celebrating her birthday or showing how Ellie now knows how Joel lied to her about the Fireflies and there being no cure. All these moments do nothing but spur you on to get your revenge for the Father that was taken from you. After deciding to give up on revenge out of nowhere Abby and Lev appear at the temp hideout and youre thrust into playing as Abby. Youre forced to see why Abby wants her revenge so badly. How Joel killed her father the doctor who Joel shoots in the operating room. This moment alone couldve been a great driving force in Abby's character but instead you're shown what she's done after killing Joel. How she's working with WLF and all theyre doing. You're forced to see the dynamic between Abby and her friends and honestly you just see how bad of a person Abby is. Besides sleeping with her ex who is already dating someone who's pregnant with his child you're forced to watch flashbacks of them together. I really wanted to know why was I forced to do this? All the energy I had up until this point is thrown away and now I'm just sitting here not caring about Abby and any of these other characters. As Abby is doing her job with WLF she gets captured and is saved by some Scars. After narrowly escaping death multiple times she decides to have a change of heart and go back and save them. After going through all these challenges and dangers she finally sees how her all her friends are dead, her and Lev go after revenge now. They make it to the hideout only to have her kill Jesse, almost kill tommy, beat Dina within a inch of her pregnant life and almost kill Ellie. At this point the story shifts and Ellie and Dina are now living in there lil happy home with their baby on a farm. You find out that even though they seem happy Ellie still can't handle what has happened to joel. She gets one last chance on revenge and she gives it up, SHE GIVES IT UP AND LETS ABBY GO FREE. If this wasn't a slap in the face the game ends showing that Ellie and Joel were going to try again at having a relationship, at being father and daughter. The scene you're shown is the night before the game essentially starts. You go off on this revenge story that is utterly pointless and worthless to the player. There is no lesson to be learned about revenge, there is no conclusion to help the player move on. Ellie just goes off now all alone back into the world. I love how Metacritic and Neil Druckmann didn't care about the reviews thinking this was just people basing their reviews off of Joel's death. It wasn't Joel's death that made this game bad for me it was the lackluster story with a bad ending that did it for me. The fact i'm forced the play as my enemy would have been ok. But the fact you try to make me like her is a **** After she kills Joel why should I like Abby? Should I like her because she saves a trans child and takes them under her wing? Hell no she's still a poorly written character who can't stand on her legs. Throughout the entire playthrough of Abby's story all I could do was see why Abby as a person is someone I couldn't be friends with. After waiting 7 years for a game I thought was going to be amazing it turned out to be a complete waste of my time. Expand

Myself, as many others, got curious by the supposed ”leaks” and went and looked into them. I was devastated, I didn’t want to believe anything that i saw in those leaks. A lot of people were mad because of those leaks, a lot of people are mad because of the story in this game, there are even some that are angry because of the characters in this story. Because of this, this game has received over 60000 reviews, as of today, which is more than double the amount of reviews that God of War (2018) has, and that game has been out for 2 years. TLOU2 hasn’t even been out for a week.
After about 22 hours I have completed this game, and decided to come here with a more positive take on this game. First, the graphics. The graphics in this game is phenomenal. ND knows how to make a game look and feel alive. Secondly, the story. A lot of people hated the story. While i do agree that this game had a worse story than the first one, I didn’t think it was as bad as people are making it out to be. While it doesn’t have as many meaningful moments as the first one, this one has a story that keeps you mostly invested until the end. The last thing I want to talk about in my review is the gameplay. I have seen a couple of reviews stating that the gameplay is outdated and boring, which I cannot understand. Sure most of the puzzles can get repetitive, but the combat makes up for it. The combat is amazing. The way people react to getting shot in the foot and starts moaning about it, and how they can bleed out after getting shot with an arrow in the neck just adds to the immersion. I also liked that they included specialized skill trees for stealth, melee and gunplay.

However, in this game we have a lot of flaws, the character that is suposed to be a hero is one of the most hated (Abby) because the story make you first hate her to like her after, and to work on this you have to play 10 hours of abby and you're still traumatized by the first scenes.
In gameplay terms is the same of the last game, that doesn't has so much appel as the story. In overral , the game looks like a visual tech.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have never reviewed a game before like this and actually created this account just to do this. The last of us part 2 is as poorly written as it is beautiful. After completing the very lengthy story of the game I truly still can’t comprehend why the writers of this game chose to treat these beloved characters with such disrespect. Joel’s death is something I won’t even get into because of how obvious it is on how disrespectful and poorly thought out it was. The rest of the story on the other hand is possibly the worst narrative I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing. The story follows a revenge plot with no pay off mixed in with a confusing attempt to make the player play as and sympathize with the very person that committed the heinous act of brutally murdering Joel and other characters during the story. Throughout this time playing as Abby (which was nearly if not half of the game) I had zero empathy for her and her group of friends and was honestly just bored and not wanting to continue through the story. This boredom was also attributed to the games poor pacing as it would constantly throw you into intense pivotal scenes only to pull you into a flashback from years before. As much of a massive fan as I am of the original game I have never felt so disappointed and utterly betrayed as I have after experiencing the last of us part 2. This in my opinion even with the success in sales will forever be one of the biggest disappointments in gaming history. Expand

Yes, it could have been better, but this is by no means a bad game. I think the story was pretty good, not groundbreaking, but still very good! The best way I could describe it is a jigsaw puzzle that's been put together wrong - all the pieces are there and are great, but they're put together in the wrong way. It's hard to care about a character or event, when you get to see the motivation behind it or their actions 10 hours later - just doesn't make a lot of sense. The ending is very polarizing - you're either love it or hate it. MOST of the new characters are kind of bland, but there are some notable exeptions.
Game plays exactly like the 1st one, just more of the same and it does get tedious at times. But bottom line - t's still fun, it's polished and you can skip a lot of encounters if that's your cup of tea!
As many other people have said, if this was a standalone game, and we didn't have to heavily compare it to the original, a lot of the hate would not exist.
If these points are not a turn off for you - play the game! I personally have no regrets and feel like I got my money's worth.

While the game performs great and the graphics are absolutely beautiful, there’s no getting over the fact that your forced to play as the most hated video game character for 10 hours. The gameplay was no different from the first game. I honestly wasn't a great fan of the story either because I felt the game ignored everything from the first story. Was excited after playing TLOU, but this is just a kick in the face for all fans. Token characters with unbelievable stories and behavior just for the sake of making them more diverse is frustrating. Sorry to see such a good first part sink so low. What was Naughty Dog thinking?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game does extremely well with it's visuals, audio, and setting. But falters on the characters and gameplay, not innovating on either. But absolutely drops the ball on a boring and dead narrative that's barely intriguing at the best of times. The whole intro sets the entire tone for the rest of the game... disappointing. The intro skips four years, and does nothing to tell us what happened during that time, nor why there's a group of fireflies who have somehow managed to track Joel down in the middle of nowhere? Not to mention as a man who full well knows that he is being hunted, drops the ball on keeping up an alias. I have no major issues with Abby, but the plot for Joel to die lacking major impact because it just dropped it on you out of nowhere with no real lead up. Expand

My Spoiler free take on this Game:

Scrolling through the many, many negative reviews made it abundantly clear, that a lot of the people who dislike the game have not played it. If you are unsure about weather or not to buy the game, do yourself a favor and watch some more professional reviews than the ones on here, as they are not only un based, but also riddled with spoilers.

    Regarding the Story:

The Story takes some really unexpected, gut punching, turns and sports a diverse cast of characters, which seems to be the main source of grief for most of the other reviews on here. I want to keep this part-2-spoiler free, so I won´t go into specific moments or characters here, but if you played it, you probably know what moments I am talking about.
Now I expect most people interested in this game have played the first one, or at least know what happened in the first game, especially since both games are available on the PS4.
That being said, spoilers for the first game ahead.
The first games story was the story of violence in a post-apocalyptic world, were every faction thought the use of violence was justified to further their goals. (e.g. the military violently trying to keep order, the fireflies using violence to resist the military and the looters/raiders using violence with a survival of the fittest mindset.) No faction really objectively can be called an evil faction as a whole (Individuals of course can be) even cannibalism is to a certain degree an more of an act of desperation rather than on of evil intent. In this violent World, no one really wins, or gets what they want in the end. Joel may have gotten out of it with Ellie, but in doing so, lost friends and allies and basically doomed the human race by stopping the only chance at a cure for the virus. Joel himself is neither the bad , or the good guy of the story. Like the other factions, he thinks his own goals are just or at least necessary for survival. We see Joel kill and torture people without second thought to and in the end lieing to Ellie all so he can achieve his personal goals.
Yet we still root for Joel, not just because he is the main character, but the game places you firmly in his point of view of the Story, you get to see how Joel grows as a character and how determined he becomes during the length of the game.

So in conclusion: The first game was set in a brutal World, where everything can be taken from you at any time, because from someone elses point of view they had the right, or the obligation to do so.

That being said, it is utterly incomprehensible to me that people complain, when this is also the case in part 2. The world is still violent and everyone thinks their killing is justified, be it out of revenge, or subjective necessity.
So in my opinion, no the Story is not out of place for the series.

Regarding gameplay: Not that much has changed since part one, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
The Combat encounters feel still very intense, weather you try to sneak around, try to make what little supplies you have count, or getting creative by luring enemies into traps. There are a few new mechanics (going prone, tall grass and pistol silencers for example) however the encounters in itself lack a bit of variety when looking at the series as a whole. There are both new kinds of humans and infected to fight, although be it very few, but most encounters play out the same where you sneak around until you get caught and have to either improvise, or hide to surprise enemies from a flank or go back to stealth. However these mechanics control very fluently and it is very satisfying to see the AI react to your approaches. (though I really wish the companion AI would do a better job of not blocking me or taking the best cover spot for themselves)
I do wish there were more encounters with infected and humans. It is always fun making these groups fight each other while observing the carnage/using the distraction to sneak away.
Outside of Encounters there are some larger areas, where you can explore and potentially stock up on supplies, get more context to the story or simply have some small encounters, that tell a story about the world itself.

About the Graphics: Not really much to say here that hasn´t already been said, it is one of the best looking games on the PS4, the environments burst with details and the level design is well executed, so that you don´t get stuck and get an introduction whenever something new is introduced, so that text pop up tutorials don´t have to interrupt the gameplay (e.g. you see a new infected Type fight other survivors before having to fight one yourself)

In conclusion: The Game is very well made.
The Story, in my opinion, fits the tone that the first game has set for the World.
The Gameplay is fun, if also repetitive after a while
    The Graphics are gorgeous

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dear Naughty Dog,

I just finished playing The Last of Us: Part II and I could not be more disappointed. Matching or even topping your original The Last of Us was a far stretch, and I don’t think that a lot of people were actually expecting you to do so. However, the critics are raving about TLOU2 ‘It’s a masterpiece’. The players have spoken too, and they think it’s a slap in the face. I agree with the other players.

I really wanted to play with Ellie (and also Joel), but you have brutalized those beloved characters like they meant nothing. Joel gets killed by a nobody within the first hour of the game, and then Ellie is kind of going on a revenge mission but the game is not at all about that revenge. The game is about Naughty Dog’s double LGTBSETGGSWRGF (whatever letters are in it these days) community being shoved down players throats.

No, I don’t care that I (Joel) killed Abby’s father in The Last of Us
No, I don’t want to run around the woods for hours and hours with a few Asian people who have nothing to do with the main story.
No, I don’t care about Abby
No, I don’t want to play with Abby for 60% of the game
No, I don’t want Abby to run around that hospital hallway for the 5th time in a nightmare playthrough
No, I don’t want to run all over America to get some first aid kit for an Asian NPC I don’t care for. Amputate the arm and be done with it. It’s the apocalypse. I’ve killed hundreds of people in this game. I don’t give 2 cents about the people who helped me from getting hanged in the woods.
No, walking simulator for hours and hours with Abby through camps, stadiums, hospitals and skyscrapers does not work for me to get any sympathy for Abby. She killed Joel, I don’t like her.
Why does Abby need to show off her ‘superior' Hulk strength every 15 minutes?
Why does Joel say his name within seconds of meeting complete strangers (and get’s killed for it)
What did your team at Naughty Dog think when they laid out the plan for this game? Let’s start off with Ellie, let the player roam around with her for a few hours, and then in the end give Ellie back to the player for one lousy mission?
Why do you, as a game company, lied in your TLOU2 trailers about Joel? ‘You didn’t think i’d let you do this on your own?’ This is false advertising.
Why would I care about Owen, his dog or the Aquarium after pointless hours of roaming around there? I already KILLED them as Ellie. I love dogs, but telling a story this way does not give me any remorse whatsoever.
Did you think players were going to enjoy hitting Ellie in the theatre and chasing her down? She’s Ellie for crying out loud.
Tommy. He’s a character. Just for your information. He might be useful for the story?

As you can see, there are some minor questions and issues I have with this game. The political and social agenda that has been shoved down my throat for hours was not entertaining or fun at all. I never thought there would be moments I would have liked to uninstall the game and just watch the ending cinematic online. I pushed through however, hoping that my pointless flashback with Abby would be short lived. Instead, I had to play for hours, and hours, and hours with a character who ruined the game for me. At one point during the sky elevator chapter, I just forgot who she was (on purpose) and said to myself that this was just another generic Tomb Raider or Uncharted video game. This is not The Last of Us. I will never play this game ever again, and I feel that Naughty Dog has lied to the gaming community. Maybe you should have just made a revenge game and let us kill all those monsters who killed Joel. Your writing is bad, and I don’t give 2 cents about your double agenda. You make entertainment products that are not entertaining. I was so glad the game was over. TLOU has some wonderful environments that are spoiled because I just ran past them at some point. Just to be done with it. I didn’t care anymore. Abby just ran into hordes of monsters and I enjoyed being killed by them. The credits should have rolled there and then. But hey, in the end we got to put some sheep in a barn with Ellie, that’s gotta count for something. I’m just sorry that we as a gaming community are the sheep and Naughty Dog is laughing in our faces. Maybe, in 2027 when The Last of Us Part III comes out, we can have a backstory about the armed soldier who killed Joel’s daughter in The Last of Us Part 1. Maybe we can get some sympathy for him as well. Good job Naughty Dog, by ruining a fantastic franchise. I hate The Last of Us Part 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's no doubt that the graphics, soundtrack, and overall game-play are phenomenal. But that is not why this game is getting trashed by users. Several do not like the story, and I could not disagree more. Is it sad and outright brutal? Yes. Does Ellie seem like a good person? No, not really. She's not the kid you met in part 1.

I think the writers were very bold, which is why people do not like it. The story is certainly no fairy tale with a happy ending, which it seems like users wanted. In this game, you get to experience and feel the struggle Ellie endures. You also get to spend nearly half the game in Abby's perspective, the antagonist (or so you think). It is a pretty unique way to write a story, which shows the world is not black and white. There is no good versus evil. It all depends on the perspective, which I think is fascinating.

I think the character development is really good, although not excellent. You get to see what each person struggles with, and what they have had to endure in such a brutal world. I never really felt myself "falling in love" with characters like in Part 1, but nonetheless, I think it is solid. I will definitely be replaying this soon to take a deeper dive into the characters.

If you want a game where you love everything that happens, you totally support everything the main character is doing, and get a happy ending, then this game is not for you. But if you can look past that, and understand that people will do what they must to survive in such a brutal world, or fight with themselves in a battle with revenge, then you will really appreciate this game. I can see why this game is so divisive. Perhaps the world was not ready for such a bold story line. I think this is a game that will age well and people may not understand the brilliance of the story for years.

But in the middle of the game, where interesting plot twist (no spoilers!) is happening, and you are supposed to get very strong feelings of your previous actions - you feel nothing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Close to platinum because I want people to understand that I have gone to the lengths required to fully review this game

Graphics - 10 - With the leaps Naughty Dog has made in the years since the first game, this game is stunning to look at. The environment at times looks unbelievably real, and the characters are beautifully detailed. However, some visual glitches persisted throughout my playthrough and some actually were enough to completely ruin my immersion in the game. T-posing, bright red artifacts appearing whenever gore occurred and models ghosting through various objects. Unfortunate but in spite of that, the game is one of the best looking on the PS4

Sound Design - 9 - This department absolutely popped off and created some of the most satisfying sounds I've ever heard in a game. Cleaning and creating weapons, shooting and reloading, and having a weapon make contact with an impactful thud all add to immersing the player in the game. Absolutely phenomenal work.

Level Design - 5 - Fantastic decision to use Seattle as the setting for the game, but abysmal direction for not utilizing it more other than a few sparse enemies here and there. Encounters can be boiled down to: explore wide open area, kill 4-8 enemies, explore some more. The level design is top notch, but with so little enemy encounters it can at times feel like a playable tech demo meant to look pretty with no real substance behind it.

Gameplay - 7 - Mechanically plays the same as the original for better or worse. The game is clunky and rough to handle at times which is to be expected unfortunately. This series was never well-known for it's groundbreaking gameplay so it's serviceable at best, but it's a shame they didn't attempt to .work upon an obviously aged aspect of the game.

Story - 0 - This is where the game falls apart. The Last of Us, regardless of what the writers try to justify, was about the relationship of Joel & Ellie. A man who had lost his child at the onset of the outbreak, and a teenager who had lost her parents travel together across the country to find a dubious organization known as the Fireflies. They bond over the course of the Journey and become inseparable. Joel made the decision to save Ellie from the group who was willing to murder a child for a cure that had VERY slim chances at succeeding, and even then after the entire course of the game along with multiple lore sources the question was brought up "Would a cure even matter at this point?". The second game immediately derails this by painting Joel's actions as the wrong one, and spends most of its run time attempting to show Joel in as bad of a light as possible barring some flashbacks that should have been the basis of the game to begin with. Ellie is reduced to a bitter villain through the course of her journey which is made to make the player feel awful as Abby & Lev are propped up as the "new" Joel & Ellie which wouldn't need to occur if Neil & Halley had followed through on "Honoring Ellie and Joel specifically". By the end of the game most of the cast introduced has been needlessly and brutally murdered by both Ellie and Abby. **** saying that Abby should have died, the whole game should not have been made at this point because the credibility of the studio has now been put into question and they've rendered the entire first game pointless because of their efforts.

This game series was brought up to its "Pillar of Gaming" status due to the story, nothing else. The fact that valid criticisms are being disregarded or generalized is completely disgusting, and it's such a shame because this game could have been a story about hope and forgiveness. Instead all that's left is anger and shame.

I wanted to love this game, I really did but in the end, it's just not to the caliber Naughty Dog is best known for, when their presence makes other studios cringe to have follow up with at E3--PlayStation and Xbox alike--with the reputation they always set the new Gold-Standard not just on consoles but amazing PC fans and developers as well. But, as history has repeatedly shown, every empire must soon fall.

GRAPHICALLY give Naughty Dog a piece of hardware and they'll wow you, their artists and programmers are talented and know what they're doing and Naughty Dog should take pride in that. They know how to pull off some pretty tricky stuff and you can tell--like every title previous--Naughty Dog takes what they've learned from previous games and culminate it altogether for something spectacular. They're constantly learning and growing. Their animation team deserves a metal or a trophy, or a hug, or something because they always pull it off. But, The Last of Us Part II (TLoUII) just doesn't have that wow factor that blows you away unlike TLoU where you thought the PS3 had totally been maxed out only to find ND still had one final rabbit to pull out of their hat. This game is beautiful, but I thought of 'Until Dawn' a lot while playing this and really well lit areas seemed lazy with really washed out colors and you ask what happened? There's still a lot of pop in as well and some characters models just don't seem quite ND. Honestly, even though this game runs at 1440p, possibly 4K checkerboard, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End at 1080p still is more impressive.

SOUND is world class! Voice acting performances are stellar. The soundtrack opens, carries, and closes the game masterfully. The 'Eye for An Eye' track playing during encounters had me feeling like I was playing a John Carpenter movie with some Hans Zimmer. The OPTIONS MENU lets you tinker with sound settings to get he optimal experience, these guys--honestly--are the stars of this game. Ashley Johnson's performance of "A Poor Wayfairing Stranger" however--while brave and a valiant effort--would indicate she needs to stick to acting and not pursue a career in music, it wasn't horrific, but wasn't great. Sound department ultimately in the end wins this with a perfect 10.

GAMEPLAY is exactly what you'd expect, really. Its more of the same with a little hint of Uncharted. Crafting is a key part of this game and upgrading all of your weapons. It's all here. The supplements aspect of the game was weird this time though. Environments are much more spacious which is both to the benefit and detriment of the gameplay. When I play TLoU, I don't play it like Uncharted or Gears of War, it's not a run-and-gun game, it's Metal Gear Solid. It's stealth and carefully working your way around to quietly eliminate your enemies and get out or explore to find this games some 300 hidden items, the problem is, this game get's cheap in that department. I had to restart encounters over and over again to play the game the way it should be played because the AI would send two guys right after me from the get go and I'd get caught and have to run and hide or just start over. 5000 characters just isn't enough to fully cover gameplay but it's flawed this go around. The dog aspect is neat and trying to get through that but, in some ways it felt like I was playing Uncharted with wave after wave of enemies. Finally, the game, due to the story is really bloated, a 15-20 hour experience (I didn't time myself) but it was way too long. I'd say the ND team had been playing Devil May Cry 4 a lot while developing this game.

STORY. As most have said, can TLoU stand alone without Part II? Absolutely. It's just an expansion to the story of Ellie as an adult. You're not missing out on anything by not playing it. The story is really long though, you're bored at several long points during the game. I spent so much time running around areas as well trying to find items that it distracted me from the goal of what ND was trying to do and that was tell and impactful story but I had to collect items. I didn't have so much of an issue with one major plot point most gamers did, I think it was actually a good move in creating a new story to adventure through but I--personally--wasn't happy with ND's personal agenda this time through. Is the game divisive? Yeah, it is. It's a violent game but so was the first one, this shouldn't be a surprise. But the whole gay pride and pushing that agenda seemed pretty lame. At least in TLoU Bill's character was subtle, that was the way to do it right. There's just not enough characters to write a descent review for this. It's an okay game in the end, just not a ND masterpiece as previous games.

First off, let me say that almost everything about this game - the visuals from graphics to environment design, animation, voice acting, gameplay (in my opinion, although some people disagree) - everything but the story is absolutely impeccable. The technical presentation is amazing. Pretty much all of my criticism is based entirely on the story, and even if I absolutely hated the story (which I didn't) I would probably have to give the game at least a 5/10 despite it being story-driven.

I'm not totally sure of how to feel about this game. I think I'd rate it between about 7.5 and 8.5 overall. The story was FINE in general. I did enjoy it, and I certainly didn't hate some parts as much as many people did, but it wasn't perfect - there were some strange decisions made in the writing, and I think the whole experience could've been much better if not for some poor execution at a few key moments. There are some pacing issues, and I think the game was a tad overlong even if I was mostly enjoying it. The story is polarizing, and not for no reason - if you're willing to roll with the story and it lands for you, then there's a chance for you to like it, but if you aren't or it doesn't then the entire intended theme and story structure will likely crumble in your eyes. With that said, with some patience and the willingness to be open minded about characters and the story the game is trying to present, I think it is still fairly enjoyable.

I would warn players that it would be doing this game a disservice to go in with preconceptions and expectations about what it is going to be about. It comes after the first game, but it is not just a direct continuation of that game's story; at least, it doesn't feel that way. There is exaggeration and tribalism on both sides of the strange war in the gaming community about this game. I'd recommend that interested players don't listen to any of that, from anyone (including me, really), and just experience it for themselves before forming an opinion.

    And for the record:

I loved the first game, and its characters, and understood it, and still enjoyed this game.

I disagree that it deserves 10/10, but the bombing of 0/10 reviews (and, truthfully, the counter-bombing of 10s, even if I understand why) is ridiculous.

You're allowed to like or dislike the game. Whatever you naturally feel about it is OK, and it's OK for people to disagree with you. The rampant tribalism and toxicity about it online is infuriating and sickening. It's especially ironic because it is about this game specifically. People just need to calm down, even if they're disappointed in this thing that they've been waiting for and invested in.

The game looks great, the gameplay is established but repetitive and hasn't changed at all since the last of us 1.

    The story is really bad.

Great gameplay, even better writing and story, Naughty Dog does it again. The story isn’t how I would want things to be but I can appreciate the journey it took me and realize the masterful writing.

This about proves that critic reviews are not trustable anymore. This game did not need a sequel, the first story was well written and very enjoyable to playthrough. Letting you bond with the characters as you progressed through the game.

This is not the same for this game, where you watch your favourite characters get tarnished and ruined. This is so Insulting to the player after you

This is not the same for this game, where you watch your favourite characters get tarnished and ruined. This is so Insulting to the player after you made that bond. Then you spend the 2nd half of the game just chasing down and getting revenge, the most uninspired story I've ever seen seems to be a cash grab and a virtue signal. Save $60 and don't get it

An excellent game, maybe seen as bad because of the first part that was one of the most brillant game of his generation.
Now Naughty Dogs tried to create an original scenario where most people just wanted to keep playing Joel, to keep playing a road trip, to keep playing the same game. People are just disappointed because they expected to play The last of us 1 again.

This game is trash, horrible story, forced ideologies, crap ending, pathetic and selfish director and they are trying to buy good scores as you can see the difference between the "page review" and the real user score, I just ordered my money back today, thank you for nothing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's an offense to the work that had the first title, the characters are horrible, the plot full of inconsistencies and things that have to happen because if to advance the plot, the characters are a shadow of what they were before (And no, to justify it by saying "is that time passed" is crap) the gameplay is minimal compared to the movies (Try to face the problems and not just in stealth mode and see what is really gameplay, nothing compared to what they promised)

Now, the memes they managed to create are a 10/10

Why is it positive? **** metacritic is wrong if you put a negative rating, I really need more proof to mention how **** this kind of page is that they suck off whoever pays the most?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was deeply excited for this game, and just as some of these other reviews, I was disappointment with the story. In my opinion the gameplay was fun the character interactions between Joel and Ellie in flashbacks and Dina and Ellie in real time were nice, however, the ending was depressing. It was depressing in a way leaving you with no closure. And of course, killing of the main character of the last game in a horrid way was hard to believe, and then having to play 8+ hours as the person who did it made the matters all worse. It was fun, emotional, and interesting, for the most part, but left me disappointed that NaughtyDog messed this one up a bit. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
