    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pre-ordered this game on PS4 and was stoked for this game because of the Last of Us first game. The story between Ellie and Joel was amazing with all of the character progression. Jumped into this game and was completely taken back by the false advertising by Naughty Dog game company with how the trailers made it seem like it was Joel putting his hand over Ellie’s mouth and in previous interviews stating that the game focused on Ellie and Joel and he appreciated the characters from the first game.

    So we have Joel killed out of the blue by some random character that no fans have any connection to.... seems very off putting. Like where did this character come from? Who in the development team pitched this or did Anita have anything to do with this development? Like fans everyone are just freaking confused. Then we play Abby for about half of the game still hating this character with absolutely no way to sympathize with this character. If Naughty Dog was trying to be inclusive with this character, I can’t think of the complete opposite for anyone that even remotely impersonates her. This game completely destroys any love for this game series. I just don’t know what this company is doing anymore misleading their fans and pushing out this garbage. I should have just stopped with playing the first game.
    Also Ellie kills ALL of these people in the story no problem....and then in the time Ellie has a chance to kill Abby she just doesn’t? After all of that. Lets her go? It makes zero sense no matter what flashback she had.    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As many reviews have stated, the game is impressive graphics wise, decent gameplay wise (mostly the same from TLA1, which is solid) but the story is so utterly god awful that it ruins the entire experience.

    Every single likeable character is killed off in the stupidest and most nonsensical way possible, the likeable characters that do remain alive are slowly turned into petty, sadistic sociopaths. Not to mention the fact that all the female characters have been made deliberately ugly as a means by which to push some body positivity agenda or something. Apparently Joel being a physically fit, reasonably attractive man is okay, but physically attractive women aren't. How odd.

    The game fancies itself as a "love it or hate it" experience, but truth be told, it is not as grand as it claims to be. Had it actually given a message that was unique and hopeful, it could ultimately forgive botching it's entire cast of characters to prove a point. But it ultimately boils down to "violence is bad and revenge is bad lol". They slaughtered every character beyond recognition to make such a obvious statement.    … Expand

    My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. Imagine having to play this game instead of just watching a walk-through at 4x speed. Also I was not able to post below a 4 so here is a 10/10.

    Really poor story telling makes you not care for the characters you play as. Pretty sad deal for all the people at ND that obviously put a ton of passion into the game. Incredible visuals, acting and gritty gaming that i really enjoyed from the first one. Probably one of the bigger disappointments I've experienced in my 37 years of gaming.

    Without giving any spoilers characters act way outside of their personalities and it feels like someone wanted to retcon the first game. Destroyed the story in a story driven game. It feels like fan fiction written/directed by a D+ 10th grade creative writing student. I would love if the company would admit the mix up, release a new TLOU II and made this one non cannon. I would pay $120 for a basic game just to see this done. 0 means you didn’t even put your name on the paper.

    If you could leave identity politics out of our games and not kill of the best character for that reason maybe I would have bought and played a game I couldn't wait to come out for. Screw your hypocrisy. Good job killing a franchise that I loved. Thanks alot Naughty Cat.

No issue with joel dying but the way they did it just sucks so bad, and them trying to make abby(joel's killer) and her crew likable by having friendships i was laughing so hard, andwas think nobidy gives a **** about this new characters when the first major thing they did was kill the main character of the first game add the fact that abby basically condemned ellie by telling her father to kill her she was the reason her father is dead, sad part is you dont even get to kill abby in the end, ellie gets bad endings period what ever you do… Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall I enjoyed this game. I understand some of the issues people are having with the story, but I think the criticism has been overblown. The sequel to the first game was always most likely going to revolve around the repercussions of Joel's actions at the end of The Last of Us. Given the stretch of the first game where you get to play as Ellie, I always expected her to be the main protagonist of the second game. I felt Joel's death was sadly the best way to make sure this was Ellie's game. My biggest problem was actually the structure and pacing rather than the story itself. I wish they had jumped back and forth between Ellie and Abby's perspectives between chapters from the start rather than throwing Abby's full storyline into the middle of the game. If our introduction to the character had been her spending time with her dad and then finding him dead in the aftermath of Joel's rampage, then the player would see the her in a more sympathetic light from the beginning. Instead our first real experience with Abby is her brutally killing Joel immediately after he and Tommy save her life. This is the problem with all of the WLF characters. When Abby's storyline builds up the character arcs and relationships with Owen, Mel, Nora, and the others, the player already knows their fates. This acted as a barrier to actually becoming invested in them as characters, since I already knew they would be dead. Because there is a hard break when we transition to Abby's storyline, it completely breaks the momentum of the 10+ hours of gameplay that proceeds it. We go through the entirety of Abby's playable arc knowing where we are going to end up, so there was little incentive to get invested in the how. The player spends the whole arc wanting to rush through to see how the stand off in the theater is resolved.
    The structural issues with the storytelling are even harder to get past because Abby isn't ever a distinctly relatable or likable character. We see her grappling with anger, but there's no real remorse or guilt. We never really see Abby questions what her actions say about her morality or how she can see herself as any better than Joel. Her romantic arc with Owen is more distraction than character development because we know he is going to die. Her arc with Lev is her most redeeming sequence, and it seems out of character with everything we see from her in the events leading up to it. Liking dogs and being scared of heights are fine as character notes, but they aren't nearly enough to make the player willing to forgive her murdering the protagonist of the first game. She is a pseudo protagonist lacking in emotional depth or clear motivations once Joel has been killed.
    All that being said, I still enjoyed the game. The visuals are beautifully done, and the setting is as engaging and anxiety inducing as the first game. If you enjoyed the game play of the first game, then you should enjoy it in part 2 because it hasn't changed much. There are minor wrinkles, such as the search dogs, stalkers, and the ability to craft silencers, that make the encounters feel a bit more varied and immersive than the first game. Overall the gameplay experience is still quite similar to the first game, maybe to a fault. Given how much time has passed since the first installment, I was a bit disappointed there wasn't a more noticeable difference. There is one section early in the game that is semi-open world, where Ellie is able to explore a section of Seattle building by building more or less at the player's leisure. That may have been my favorite stretch of the game, and I wish more of the gameplay had been structured that way.
    I found the dynamic between Joel and Ellie to be the most memorable element of the first game, as did most players. I thought the flashback sequences featuring the two characters in Part 2 lived up to the original game and were some of the best parts of this game. With their inclusion, I actually came away pretty satisfied with Joel's role and presence in the game. I'm not really sure what people were expecting.
    Overall The Last of Us Part 2 had too many flaws to live up to its predecessor, but I still really enjoyed it. Revisiting the characters of Joel and Ellie was still one of my most enjoyed gaming experiences of the year, and I would recommend The Last of US Part 2 to anyone who enjoyed the first game.    … Expand

    Cookie cutter story, copy and paste combat. Beautiful graphics, and atmospheric settings. Nothing new in crafting. Without posting spoilers, I would strongly suggest you save your money for when the game goes kn sale.

    If you've played the original Last of Us, just remember the scene where Joel consoles Ellie during winter. It's heavy, it's emotional. The sequel does not have anything remotely close to this emotional. It barely has fleeting moments of flashbacks to the good times. This sequel spits in the face of the characters from the first game.

After hearing in interviews years ago that tlou is Joel and Ellie, and the sequel would be just that, you would be forgiven for taking them at their word. It is little wonder people are annoyed with the terribleAs expected the game looks great, the gameplay is not exactly anything new. Basically some of the uncharted 4 mechanics added in.     Gameplay mechanics are very good. Section designs are very detailed. The tension is too high. The soundtrack and the atmosphere of the game are breathtaking. The story is bad. Too bad. The game repeats itself too much after a while.

The gameplay improve a lot that is great, HOWEVER almost every fan loved this game for the history and characters, we didn't play the first part to save the freaking planet, we did it in order to see the history between Ellie and Joel, when we saw and felt how Joel retake a lost special feeling when travel with Ellie and know that he doesn't want to lose his new family. If I have to be honest I was afraid because I couldn't find the way to explain a new plot in order to justify a second part for this game. Now I know this was the worst way to do it, we literally have to play with the damn killer, and you try .. no, you make the player take some kind of empathy to this character and it doesn't work. At the end Ellie lost everything, the last chapter when Ellie went to California in order to find Abby was the worst idea I ever see; Ellie didn't reach her goal (well, she does, but at that point anything didn't have a sense. That fight was bland for me), and she end's alone (WTF).....
    I think they did this part after see they screw up at beginning. Literally 60% of history are flashbacks that are not flash (bad joke I know)....
    They show us characters without relevance and poor development that as you know if you played they died in bland way....
    SUMMARY, is a great game if you really don't care the plot, sadly this game for the most of us is no just the graphics.    … Expand

    It is heartbreaking to see how disrespectfully ND treated Joel. After so many years of waiting for part 2 of my favorite game of all time This was such a disappointment. The graphics and gameplay are great but the story is crap. The flashbacks were some of the best parts and sadly remind me of how good this game could have been without the PC bias.

    The gameplay 4/10 it's boring i was struggling to push myself I woke up wanting to reformate my PS4 hard drive then play it was ok for the first game as I wanted to get to the next scene so I pushed my self more and more and was enjoying it. but this game I could not after the first 2hrs I wanted to put the game down and just jump back on my pc.

    The story 3/10 the problem is seen as major plot points are dropped and charters don't act how they would truly act. I won't go into spoilers but Abby's character does not make me care about her I wanted to just jump off a cliff and had more fun when I died in stupid ways.

    The plot is focused on revenge and how the cuticle just keeps going until someone ends it. but Abby gets away scotfree Abby loses what nothing really but Ellie loses Joel loses her girlfriend loses her fingers and ability to play the guitar. it feels like in the end she has nothing and Abby has everything. the last fight was Ellie finding Abby tied up left to die Ellie cuts her down and proceeded to have a brutal fistfight and at end of fight Ellie starts to drown Abby but lets her go at last second and lets her drive away with the boat. this fight is stupid if Ellie had drowned Abby who would know that Ellie did it. Abby was left to die tied up on a pole with others. The reason I say this is because people's argument is Abby's friend will hunt down Ellie. but why how would they know it was Ellie. They cant for all they know she drowned after trying to escape, died because of her injuries or starvation, and ended up in the water.
    another point I want to call out is Ellie can forgive a person who caved in Joel's skull basically her father with a golf club but can't forgive a man how made her sandwich and she called it a bigot sandwich even though he apologized to her and made it as a gift. it seems like to many political points were thrown into this game. it's more point-scoring like they made a list of political point tweeter and media can get behind and just shoved them in
    LGBTQ+ as main characters, Trans sex scenes, man-hating female empowerment.
    There's nothing wrong with these things but there more shoehorned into the game

    If you herd about the behind the scenes of the game I think it explains everything they burnt out there staff so much with crunch they ran out of people in the industry to work for them as they had to grab film VFX students to work for them as no veterans or anyone else wanted to. there are reports and testimonies from the dev hoping the game will fail so the crunch will end.

    My final score is 4/10
    The graphics and voice work and motion capture are amazing all together deserves a 9/10
    but the main thing you're doing for 20hrs+ is the gameplay and its boring combat and stealth sections and AI pathing is terrible 4/10
    and last the story I have already scratched the surface as I'm too tired to talk anymore about it anymore 3/10

The Gameplay is similar to the original and in no way has changed, revolutionized or done anything groundbreaking. The graphics are terrific as to be expected from this studio. The problem is in the story itself and the decisions that characters are made to enact upon. Joel's death was expected but the manner in which it occurred is what upsets many, the out of character decisions he makes that leads to this outcome. Then after that we are forced to play as one of the most unlikable characters in gaming history. It's not because of how she looks, it's because of how she acts. Ellie is also destroyed in the character development department. There seems to be absolutely no redeeming qualities left in her and the cycle of violence is a poor answer for that to happen. The end of course is a complete mess. There is no pay off. No real advancement of the previous story about infected and the world in general. Another issue is how it was presented in the media as a story about Joel and Ellie, it is a story about Abby and Ellie. The bait and switch tactic is terrible. Finally the false copyright strikes on YouTube and Twitter for people who talked about spoilers, they did not show any copyright material and only gave an opinion on what was leaked but they were crucified. I will always love the first game but this is a travesty.… Expand

The last of us two is definitely a good looking game with decent gameplay mechanics, but this is lost when your forced to play as a character that is unlikable. Abby killing Joel in the early parts of the game set her up as the villan, but instead she is meant to be the secondary protagonist. This idea isnt bad on paper as the player will be shown her side of the story and allowed to understand her charater. The issue becomes how she has no redeeming qualities and participates in horrible actions the player is forced to being complicate in. When the finally arrives we see Ellie simply let Abby go, and after playing her and being forced to witness all the pain she causes your left feeling almost betrayed. The last of us relies on its story and visuals to take the player on a journey, but this joureny was a revenge porn filled nightmare that shames you for actions you have no control over then preaches a half baked message of peace over violence once everyone is dead.… Expand

    The system, battle, graphics are good.
    But the story destroyed the whole game.
    I don't feel angry, but sad. Really, really sad.
    I waited for 5 years, and this "game" ruined my memory, ruined my day.
    I almost cry in front of the monitor.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sometimes it's pretty difficult to find a satisfactory conclusion, if the ending of a game is that phenomenal. You kind of forget all the weaknesses that happened before. In the middle part it gets a bit tiring. Scenarios, where you have to kill everybody and move forward (or just move forward (to the next tall building)) repeat themselves rather often. In addition to that, there is the part where we have to play as Abby, which gets really fatiguing after a while. In contrast to other reviews I don't think that this is because we particularly hate her so much, but because it's a flashback. Most of the time there was no real suspense because we always knew what it would lead to. Sadly this part filled a lot of the game, so it was quite boring to play for a long time. (On the other hand, I can't think of a way how they could have done this better without compromising the story.)

Much of the game is an improvement over the first one, such as combat, exploration, collectables and weapon customisation. The only thing I can fault about the game is the unnecessary sex scene towards the middle of the game but more importantly the story.
    The story for this game is a mess, the clear progression with fantastic relationships between joel and ellie is what made the first game great but in part two the story is all over the place. You play as both ellie and abby, the latter being the antagonist of the game - which is a huge mistake in my opinion as the developers try to force you to care about her even tho I personally just wanted to kill her. The sections where you play as abby are extremely boring and I rushed them to get them over with. To finish it off the ending is a massive disappointment and the definition of an anti climax. However the game is still enjoyable.    … Expand

    What turned out to be one of the most awaited games disappointed greatly in terms of story. Writers chucked everything good about it just to make it "dark". Was just angry at half of the game. Gameplay and graphics are the only things that made it playable.

This community waited 7 whole years for this game, and while the gameplay and graphics were amazing, the most important part, the story. Left me crying, but for all the wrong reasons. They took an INCREDIBLE series, and destroyed it. You play as Ellie loving a happy life with family, and people she loves in the small town of Jackson, Wyoming. And everything is well, until not even 2 HOURS into the game, Joel’s head gets bashed in with a golf club. And this community isn’t mad BECAUSE Joel dies. It’s how, he rescues a stranger and gives away his name, where he lives, and follows this stranger back to her base where all her friends are. Turns out these people had a bone to pick with Joel, and they torture him with a golf club, and beat him to death. Now having seen Joel be such an unforgiving, cold hearted man in the first game, who trusted no one but Tess and eventually Ellie, it’s so hard to believe he would do something so insanely stupid. And if you think that’s where it ends? You couldn’t be more wrong. To put it short Ellie goes halfway across the country to kill the girl who killed Joel, Abby. She proceeds to kill all of Abby’s friends and eventually tracks Abby down. She gets the crap beats out of her. And we skip ahead about a year. Tommy can barely walk and can only see out of 1 eye, Maria split with Tommy, Ellie lost her friend Jesse, her surrogate father Joel and many others along the way. But now she has a family, as Dina (her girlfriend who travelled with her to Seattle with) was pregnant. But when Tommy comes back with a lead, she ditches everyone she loves to travel halfway across the country again this time to California to kill Abby. She gets there, fights her way through a prison and has a final fight with Abby, to which when she has the upper hand, Abby bites 2 of Ellie’s fingers off and instead of ending it there, and making everyone she’s lost, and EVERYTHING she’s lost not go in vain, she lets Abby live. And when she returns to her farm home with Dina, Dina and the child JJ, are nowhere to be found. In the end Ellie lost everything Jackson, Joel, Dina, the child, her revenge on Abby, Tommy, Maria, and her 2 fingers thus eradicating her ability to play guitar which is the only thing she can remember Joel by. And not to mention we play half this game as Abby, the ANTAGONIST just so we could have 6 more hours of play time. Like I said before this game had me crying for Joel Ellie, and everyone. But for all the **** wrong reasons the entire game is for absolutely nothing. And.... I have no words. I don’t, this community waited so long just to get a **** story, and leaving Ellie depressed, unless you want good gameplay and a horrible story with so many jumps from present to past don’t buy this game. Don’t waste your money and 20 hours of your life like I, and so many others did. You could get a better experience by watching it on YouTube. But all we can do know is hope that someone at ND fixes this. Other than that, I have nothing to say, I personally just finished the game and I need a break, I won’t be sleeping much tonight.     I will start by saying this game is absolutely beautiful. The studio did an amazing job building this world, the ambience is amazing, the lighting is amazing. Huge respect for the people who built the visuals.

    My problem here is with the unbelievably BAD and LAZY writing. Starting with Joel's death. The way it's done is absolutely horrible. The character we all loved from the first game dies a completely pathetic death that doesn't reflect the character. Joel spent more than 20 years surviving in this world, and falls for a trap that anyone would see from miles away. It's not the fact that he died, but how they've done it: It happens in the first 2 hours of the game, with barely any screentime to the character, and it is done by a character we don't know anything about.

    The game just reaps out your emotional attachment to it, so fast, you just doesn't care about it anymore. There were a million better ways to do it. You can easily build up the main character's death in a way that we can have an emotional attachment to it, and to make Ellie's revenge have an emotional meaning. But it's not how it's done here.

    If the game had built up Joel and Ellie's story before killing Joel, it would make so much more sense, and i, as a player, would be way more invested in Ellie's revenge. It's hard to believe they had 7 years to come up with a narrative, and still they did the worst thing they could have done.

    We then proceed to play more than 10 hours as Abby, a character that we absolutely hate for doing that to Joel. The game tries to justify Joel's death with 10 hours of WASTED TIME going through flashbacks and useless sections of the game. It fails miserably in trying to make you understand her side of the story.

    In short, the story is poorly written and VERY disorganized. The narrative is totally out of order, there's no character development for the main characters.

    Dina has no development whatsoever, and Jesse is barely in the game. Jesse's death was just IGNORED by all the characters, he's never mentioned again after he dies. Manny is another flat character that you just doesn't care about.

    In the end, Ellie's revenge meant nothing. Joel died, Jesse died and don't get to see his son, Tommy is disabled, Ellie lost 2 fingers, her baby and her girlfriend. And Abby just walks away, successfully avenging her father, who's just a NPC from the first game.

    As an absolute fan of the first game, i am sad with what Naughty Dog has done to this sequel. They had 7 years to build the perfect sequence to the masterpiece that was the first one, but they managed to make a completely garbage storyline. Looks like it was done in the laziest way possible.    … Expand

    Tristemente la historia no fue la mejor,se acepta que se pueda matar a joel para de ahi dar un punto de partida a la supuesta venganza,pero matarlo de esa forma tan inhumana????? a joel???? que no confiaba ni en su sombra y casualmente confia en un grupo de gente que anda de paso? la verdad que el guion tuvo muchas conveniencias.
    Recuerdo que los trailes aparentaban que mataban a dina y la venganza partia de msde ahi con una ellie amargada por el suceso y que joel la encontraria para ayudarla,hasta esa historia hubiese tenido mas sentido.
    Nos hacen tratar de empatizar con abby? enserio? despues de la muerte que le dan a joel? La verdad que las horas que se juega con abby se me hacian largas,no queria jugar con ese personaje.
    Para terminar y resumir fueron 34hs(en mi caso ) de jugar para ver como seria el desenlace y la verdad se nos rieron en la cara,34 hs para que ellie le perdone la vida a abby por un flashback que le da en el momento.
    Abby no tuvo compasion en ningun momento,mato a joel,a jesse y lisio a tommy,sin contar que casi mata a dina y por conveniencia el pibe que rescata abby la convence de que no lo haga y se van.
    Despues de eso es cuando quieren retomar la venganza y la verdad ya en ese puento ya uno se empieza a cansar, dejas a dina para retomar tu venganza y resulta que antes de eso te tenes que cagar a tiros con medio mundo para llegar a ella y encontrarla casi muerta.
    En el enfrentamiento final lo mejor hubiese sido que ellie mate a dina y se cumplen la esa venganza que nos prometieron,y hasta la muerte de ellie la veia creible por las heridas que tenia,pero no,la deja ir a abby y ella se queda sin nada.
    Hasta 2 dedos le sacaron para mostrar que ni la guitarra puede tocar,la verdad que este juego tenia todo para ser lo mejor, pero su director no supo pensar una buena historia y es por eso que este juego no lo veo como la continuación del 1.    … Expand

I fail to see in the grand scheme of the game, how we as players that have come to love the characters of this game, are meant to feel something for a psychopath... However, the story reads like an unedited mess where the writer have interesting idea but the execution is absolutely terrible. While Abby has the potential to be a really interesting character they spend way too little time on both her backstory and giving her time to re-examine her own actions. You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

    If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
