I have just finished the game I thought it was very good, but understand why some people are upset the ending makes sense, in my opinion, but isn't what some people wanted. I would recommend playing this game, but be aware it's not a happy game and not really an adventure it's melancholy, if not straight up depressing. I don't feel like it was bitter sweet, like the first, and I doubt I can play through it again for a while if at all. I think the reason I liked it and others didn't was because I was able to empathize with a a character others could not. I can't fault them for that either.

Edit 1: TLDR: Still very enjoyable. the rating I should give it is a 9, but I won't to offset the abundance of 0s

I'm now at a little over 10 hours I think this game feels very much like the first. Some of the other reviews I saw pointed that out too. They seem to point to this as a negative, but I disagree. The first game was extraordinary, and I think this sequel continues this. It is visually beautiful and the dynamic between Ellie and Dina is enjoyable. It's different than that of the First, since the relationship to Ellie is very different. The story is still engaging. I was at the edge of my seat at a few points.
I do have a few issues however, there have been a few visual glitches and the game crashed once, which takes away enough enjoyment that I should take away a point. The only reason I am not is the excess of overly negative ratings. I can understand distaste for the story, but I don't think that is really why it is being barraged. Unless the story is so uninspired later I can't see any major complaints with the story. Sure a revenge plot can be called cliche, but there is enough of a hero's journey to enjoy.

TLDR: So far a very fun game

I've put in 2 hours and 30 minutes so far, so this rating may be subject to change, but I really don't see what people are complaining about. So far I'm invested in the story. One could argue that this could be a bias carried over due to falling in love with the characters in the original that caused this investment, but I am invested nonetheless. So far it feels like the Winter section of the original game in atmosphere, both physically and mentally.

FINAL SCORE: 1/10, despite decent visuals and ok gameplay you will play this game untl the end just because you have paid for it, the story ruins the entire experience and it really is very difficult to finish this game beacuse of the absolute **** that happens in the storyline... Basically you are forced to play as the killer of Joel and not only that but in a large portion of the game you even have to fight Ellie... Incredible.... and in the end Ellie does not get revenge because "revenge is bad" narrative.... disgusting

    if you play RDR2

Remember in RDR2 how Chapter 6 ends? Arthur, weakened by his tuberculosis is beaten to death by Micah as the gang falls apart by Micah's doing. Very sad, and you want nothing more than to kill Micah as revenge. Imagine then that the epilogue starts up, and it looks like it might deliver on that. Then, ha ha F you, the epilogue is actually you playing as Micah, going back to Micah childhood, trying to get you to like Micah, then in the Ending you switch back to John, just to let Micah go without killing him. That's basically what this game is. Pathetic.

Fabulous characters. Easily in my top 5 of the greatest games of alm time. 2. I don't care about the LGBTQ agenda. I know it's been unnecessarily pushed in this opus, but this didn't discourage me from looking forward to playing the game. Alright, I am going to be as concise as possible. I have created an account specifically to express my opinion and my absolute disgust over what happened. When I saw the leaks a couple of months ago I couldn't believe my eyes, so I canceled my preorder and waited for a review w/ spoilers before making a decision on how I should use my $62 (taxes man).

Verdict: Neil Druckmann is a psychopath. This individual has a serious neurological/psychological problem. Not only he does my boy Joel dirty and makes my girl Ellie miserable, but his ultimate goal is to make you feel bad about everything you do. Making you feel guilty, ashamed, humiliated and desperate. For example when he forces you to kill pets, or when he makes you kill a pregnant woman (the pregnancy thing appeared three times btw), or when he makes Ellie want to play guitar with two missing fingers...this is pure degeneracy at this point. Games are supposed to make you go through a lot of emotions, including bad ones, but what Druckmann and Gross (name suits her like a glove) make you do is pure perversion. They should never touch a scenario again. Druckmann when he has full control over a script is dangerous.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's sad watching all of the critics scramble to post articles about the game getting "review bombed" and looking for excuses to justify a bad game being given a legendary rating.

The game moves extremely clunky and the sneak attack on "the infected" is beyond idiotic. Yes, let me put my arm right below a zombies mouth. This also feels like a game that would benefit much more from allowing users to make some choices. Instead we're mostly stuck watching a film with little game play.

Critics will jump on the "this is obviously anti-LGBT crowd. No. No one gives a darn about the main character being a lesbian. It's not a romance game and frankly her love interest is so boring. Their interactions are boring and trivial. What makes their relationship worse is knowing the forgettable love interest is essentially Joel's replacement. Speaking of Joel... his death was poorly timed and very poorly setup. The writing around his untimely doom was horrendous. This guy lived 24+ years just to get clapped by some petulant woman he just saved. The guy never had a complete story arc and never had to confront his choice to essentially doom humanity's chance at a cure. Plus, it felt like a watered down crappy version of the Walking Dead's scene with Neagan.

The game is gorgeous. There's no arguing that and I'm sure thats what critics are getting a hard on about. Not to mention, just like movies, out of touch critics love unpopular plot twists. These are the same people who will pan a movie like Avengers Endgame and then praise a movie like Green Book that no one actually cared to go watch.

Get off your high horses and admit you're sheep. Not a single negative review from a critic? No one sees how fishy that is? But instead blame fans... you know the people who keep you in business and who the games are supposed to be made for.

The game isn't horrendous but man it's really boring in-between cut scenes.

    ***SPOILERS****
None of the new characters in the game are likeable at all. The main character from the first game gets killed 2 hours in and you are forced to play as the killer for at least 10 hours. When you finally reach the end of the game Ellie decided to not even get her revenge and avenge Joel. The whole game is just one big misery simulator for the sake of being miserable. The story has no direction and feels like it was written by a edgy 14 year old as a fan fiction. Play the first "last of us" and save yourself the headache and skip this game.

Killed one of the 2 main characters of the game in the first hour or so of gameplay. Wasted a game worth of character development just to subvert expectations. Spent the whole game chasing Joel's killer to get revenge only to fight her, be seconds away from killing her, but decide to let her live, because again, people wouldn't expect that. Enough said.

The gameplay has not been improved since the first game bar some minor additions such as a jump button and the ability to go prone. There are no puzzles in this game, a departure from the first game and from Naughty Dog's Uncharted series which feels disappointing, the game never challenges the player, choosing to throw you into the same combat encounters every twenty minutes between some light hiking. The entire game feels stale, like it never left the ps3 generation other than the graphics and animation which are, all things considered a technical masterpiece, I never experienced a single bug or glitch throughout the entire game. Unfortunately the game is hugely let down by a truly terrible story and boring unlikable characters including those that return from the first game. The story beats are anticlimactic at best and never made me want to carry on playing the game. It feels as though the story is trying to push complex themes that never mean anything. The entire game is based around revenge but the game fumbles and drops the ball repeatedly when it comes to this idea. It looks worse when you consider both God of War and RDR2 dealt with the same themes in a much better way than the last of us 2 did. This game is also totally hopeless and bleak, as if it were trying too hard to take itself seriously, I found myself laughing at some of the choices these characters made. This game feels like it's story was thrown in about 6 months ago and was never developed further beyond a base idea. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is actively miserable to play. Any investment that you have is actively exploited by the game in order to make you feel guilty or depressed. This includes whatever investment the player might have had in The Last of Us, since the characters from that game are completely ruined within this game, both in terms of characterisation, writing and their actual fate within the narrative.

They removed Joel, a man who learned to find hope amidst a hopeless world by protecting the people he loves, by unceremoniously killing him with a golf club. All the lessons he learned and the new life he had resolved to lead are now completely meaningless, as only a single hour into the game he's just dead. While this creates a powerful emotional catalyst for Ellie, setting her out on this story does nothing but harm her character.

Ellie herself becomes a nearly emotionless assassin hellbent on getting revenge for Joel's murder. This is not done in a way that makes it any more interesting than the countless revenge stories we've seen before. It's incredibly ham-fisted. But the worst aspect to this design choice is that it sucks more of the fun from the game. Ellie was a bright-eyed, fierce girl with real bite and personality. The player's desire to protect her and see her interact with Joel were the driving force of the plot in The Last of Us. It's why many people put up with the clunkier aspects of the game, the story really patched it up. But now? Joel's dead and Ellie is miserable. The aspect of hope is completely absent in this game, leaving the player with no motivation to continue playing. It is a complete slog to get to the end of this game, and you're constantly left questioning the motives of the developers rather than the motives of the characters. The journey has already committed to being hopelessly grim from the first hour in.

The new characters in The Last of Us 2 have been pretty harshly criticised, and I would argue that this is completely justified. None of the new characters have stuck with me. Compared to the very natural and realistic dialogue from its predecessor, these new characters feel stiff, emotionless and robotic. Some of them are quirky for no reason and in ways that feels intentionally obtrusive, some of them simply have no personality to speak of, and some of them are simply annoying. Abby in particular is a egregious case, since we spend almost half of the game playing as her, before we even understand why she killed Joel. And in the end it simply turns out that Joel killed her father. Her father was a man that was actively trying to kill Ellie, and Joel killed him to defend her. Meanwhile, Abby killed Joel just because she wanted to. The game demonizes Joel and tries to get us to revaluate his character, but there's really not anything to think about. There is no real moral quandary. Joel killed Abby's father to defend someone he loved. Abby killed Joel because she was bloodthirsty and wanted revenge. Abby is unequivocally a worse person than Joel, which kills a large part of the game's message.

The reason that the characters behave unnaturally, the setups are so flimsy, the plot holes are so numerous and the world is so hopeless, is because the game has to happen in this way for us to be provided with a message: revenge is bad. Revenge makes you equal to the person you have killed, or it makes you more like them, etc. This is a valuable life lesson for everyone to learn. However, it is something that can be told to you in a far more subtle and understandable way, and is something most people learn when they are 12 years old. This is an 18 rated game. People who have no understanding of basic human morality should not be playing this game, which has full-blown nude sex scenes within it. it treats the player like a young child. The message is also undermined because the gameplay requires you to remorselessly kill hundreds of people to reach the ending, only to be told that killing is wrong. This only makes you view your experiences as even more pointless.

In the end, Ellie is left completely alone. Joel is dead, her girlfriend and child abandoned her, she didn't take her revenge and simply gave up on Abby, and she can't even play the guitar anymore. She walks off into the distance, solemn and unfeeling. And I am left to stare blankly at the screen and wonder why I was foolish enough to have any emotional attachment to this game whatsoever. The payoff that I was waiting for never came.

This game accomplishes a 2/10 only by virtue of its stunning technical achievements. The game looks gorgeous and plays serviceably. But if you take out all the aspects of this game that rely purely on budget, this game is left with nothing to stand on. Those things are undercut by being the delivery system for an awful, half-baked, virtue signalling, obnoxious, childlike story with bland and unlikable characters, ridiculous decisions, and an oppressively bleak and grimdark atmosphere.

I hated how I played as Abby who killed one if the main protagonist in apart of the game. I wished the plot to the story would change, but it’s already out and finalized. Probably just going to finish the game since it’s already bought, and sell it after finishing it. Expand

However the rest of the game tries to do new aspects but the execution of their decisions is very poor. The characters are not interesting enough to keep the story going. At a point in the game, I just quit because the character you are forced to play, you don't care for and have any interest. Therefore, the game is unplayable. The ending is probably the most lazy ending to a "revenge plot" from my knowledge. The motivations of the characters aren't present and by the end you feel like this entire game was pointless and doesn't need to exist. The Last of Us Part 2 tries to do new things however, there is too many characters for Neil or any other writers to make them interesting or cared for if they die or not. Better luck next time. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In general, TLOU Part 2 is a good game. I don't know if it is a worthy sequel to The Last of Us 1, but it is good.

The Story was not as bad as most reviews are telling you.

Yes, Joel dies. Okay, he dies in a shameful way, can't deny this. But the story builds on that fact, that Joel was killed with a golf club.

The more you play, the more the game is an emotional roller coaster. Sometimes I really hated TLOU2, sometimes I absolutely loved it. In the end, the Game is worth the AAA-Price of 60$.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Visuals: 8

While much of it is stunning, there are a number of technical problems that occasionally make themselves known, from bad/glitchy lighting, strange clipping issues, and some weird character movements. Additionally of note, while quite gorgeous, there are other titles that have even better visuals, like Horizon: Zero Dawn. All in all great, but not the best of a long generation.

    Music: 10

Quite simply, the music is a 10 if I ever heard one. Beautifully arranged and executed for perfect dramatic effect. Not much more needs to be said here.

    Sound: 5

The general sound on the other hand, from gun shots to foley, seem to be neglected here. While some things are well done, many effects seem muddled or down right out of place. Worse yet, quite a few are present in cut scenes of all places. Average at best.

    Story: 2

The story is... problematic and mismanaged at BEST. Much of the story could be salvageable if sequenced properly. However, the sequencing does the exact opposite of creating a compelling and relatable story, instead driving a wedge between what is believable and what is presented. While I won't spoil much here, the story revolves around revenge, the ending opts to "break the cycle" in perhaps one of the most dissatisfying ways, sapping the last bit of enjoyment from the story. While the blooming relationship between Ellie and Dina is quite enjoyable, even that is cut short due to bad storytelling that is not the least realistic. Overall, the story is poorly executed.

    Writing: 1

The general writing, particularly of the moments between cut-scenes and combat, is almost painful to listen to, due largely to bad and awkward dialogue. A good 70% of this dialogue could have been cut, with a positive or neutral effect to the story if it was.

    Acting/Voice acting: 4

While much of the voice acting is top notch, it feels like much of the dialogue is so out of place or non-committal that the lack of decent voice acting in some places feels quite jarring.

    Game Mechanics: 6

There isn't much new compared to the previous installment, and the game mechanics overall feels too similar to the first to warrant much praise beyond better than average.

    Online: 0

One of the great things about the original The Last of Us was its great multiplayer that allowed for hundreds of hours of online play that felt truly unique and engaging. For some reason, Naughty Dog decided that one of the original things that made this series great would be cut entirely for seemingly no reason. A major disappointment that is not excusable in this generation of gaming.

    Final verdict: 4.5/10

Overall, the game is a disappointment. After waiting 7 years for a new installment, this feels like a kick in the gut and stab in the back. While the game scores well in a technical manner, everything else falls short of expectations and leaves me wondering if the team behind this catastrophe knew just how poor it truly was.

Overall, at 4.5, that would make it just below average. When deciding whether or not it would be rated a 4 or 5 for the overall score as seen at the top, I had to debate whether or not to remove some categories to create a better reflection of what to expect. I decided against this and kept to what was written.

If you played the original game, this is closer to a 0-2, and even if you don't have the attachments from having played the original, it would be hard to rate this above a 5.

Save your money and spend it on something made with love and care, not this train-wreck.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So game could have been better in some aspects but here we go. Im gonna explain what I think the ending means. So it all started at the hospital in the first game. Joel killed so many ppl and basically everyone in the hospital. Now in Last of Us Part 2 Joel killing spree ends up catching up to him and he dies in the hands of Abby because he killed her dad which was one of the surgeons. It was actually really realistic the way he died because he cant kill all those ppl he was gonna get killed eventually by some one. I mean it is the Last of us after all. Well after that Ellie goes on a absolute killing spree doing exactly what Joel was doing in the first. Hunting down. Many WLF members. Then Ellie and Abby face off at Santa Barbara and clash. To many ppls surprize Ellie tells Abby to go and just leave. The reason for this is because she had enough of the fighting and realized that all the fighting wouldnt bring Joel or any of them back. It was a cycle it all started with Joel and moved on to Ellie and then killing Abby would lead to Lev killing Ellie in the future potentially. She had enough. To me it makes sense. The reason I gave it a 9 cause no game is ever perfect. I feel some things could have been improved upon. But yeah thats my review. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. That was one emotional rollercoaster. I knew this game was going to be rough but that really hit me hard in the feels.
I really enjoyed it and before the end I thought I'd immediately replay it, but I think I need to give it some time before I put myself through that again.
As a fan of the first game I had very high hopes for Part 2 and it did not disappoint.

I really enjoyed the first half of the game.
I think the gameplay has been improved upon drastically. The first game always felt a bit clunky, and while Part 2 isn't perfect, it was so much smoother.
It was heartbreaking to see this darker and far more serious Ellie (it makes sense, but gone is the little pun-loving girl from Part 1) and every time I'd sneakily kill someone and she'd slit their throat my heart ached a little bit looking at the pain and hatred on her face. That's another thing that was superbly done: the facial animations! Bravo Naughty Dog!
I thought the introduction of Dina was a great move! I found her very likeable and I'm glad she was with Ellie. Their conversations when you're travelling together are wonderful.

Now, I enjoyed the second half of the game also, when you play as Abby, BUT I just couldn't care for Abby. I wanted to! I really wanted to like her, but just as I'd start to warm to her she'd do or say something that took me back to disliking her again. I totally get her reasons for killing Joel (Joel wasn't perfect either and killed so many people, same with Ellie) but I just couldn't get on board with her. When playing as Ellie I would hate seeing her die (and man, I died A LOT in this game) but when playing as Abby when she died I just didn't care. I did enjoy the second half of the game though but I did catch myself at one point wishing for Abby's story to be over so I could get back to playing as Ellie, and let me tell you that never happened in the first game or when playing as Ellie in Part 2. I also found Abby's quest dragged for a bit too long. I know we had to stay with her for that amount of time in order to sympathise with her and appreciate she has some redeeming qualities, but I just couldn't get on side. She annoyed me to be quite honest. I will say I don't think Abby was a bad person all in all, she let Ellie and Tommy go TWICE, she saved Yara and Lev and turned on her own people to protect them, so she wasn't an outright dick... but I didn't like her. I wanted to but I just didn't.

I think the decision to switch to Abby halfway was a very ballsy and interesting move. It definitely made me think about the violence that everyone in this world inflicts on each other. There are no "good guys" or "bad guys", just people trying to survive. When you have to fight Ellie as Abby it made me realise that to some people (Abby etc) Ellie isn't a good guy in the same way as Abby isn't a good guy to some (Ellie etc).
I think too many fans are expecting a black and white story, where you have the "goodies" and the "baddies" but that isn't the world of The Last of Us. Naughty Dog have created a complex world with complex characters and it pays off.

I consider myself decent at video games and played this on Moderate and died A LOT! So either I'm not as good as I thought or ND have improved the AI so much that even Moderate is difficult.
I loved fighting enemies in this game! They're so much smarter than the first - I'm mainly talking about the human enemies. The way they communicate with each other and will flank you I thought was excellently done. I also found when being shot it really knocked me back so much that I'd have to scramble to try and get back up before they'd pump another bullet in me. I like that you can't just charge enemies if they're firing at you because you will, most likely, die. It made me really think about how I would take them on. The way enemies will actively look for you, looking under and over objects, was very well done. I couldn't stay still for long and it constantly kept me on my toes.
I also liked that there are waves of enemies. In TLOU once you cleared enemies, that was it. But as TLOU2's map is so much bigger it allows for a constant flow of enemies which was great!
Hitting someone with a weapon was very satisfying and felt "real" (not that I find hitting people in real life satisfying... but you get the jist).

I've read some of the user reviews on Metacritic giving this game a 0/10 yet will praise the gameplay and graphics. How can you score something 0 when there are parts of it you rate? It doesn't make sense. I think too many people are hurt that Joel was killed and then they scored the game low without even finishing the story or trying to understand the message this game is giving us.
Overall, I'd give The Last of Us Part II a 7.5 (verging on 8) out of 10. Not perfect by any means, but one I shall be replaying for years to come.

The last of us Part2 is a Narrative driven, stealth-action game that introduces and delivers on heavy thematic messages. Such as when is ok to antiquate vengeance with justice, how far do we fall till we become our enemies or something worst, and what truly separates the "them from the "us".

When it comes to sound design and score, a already unsettling game because down right unnerving.

When it comes to sound design and score, a already unsettling game because down right unnerving. And truly aims to emerse the player, into feelings of love, innocence, hate, sorrow, terror, and despair when required. As far as as visuals go The Last of Us Part 2 is beautiful, I played the game on a PS4 pro.
Graphics and Frame rates were steady, smooth, and crisp, environments sought to emulate that of the real world and when violence is introduced the game becomes hyper real to an extent in the way way blood splatters and the visceral natures of the kills became hyper real. Although I did experience a glitch that distorted the face of a character halfway in the game, but I just had to restart my PS4 and haven't experienced any more probelms since.

Gameplay can be challenging but nothing that is to difficult to over come, one thing the game has going for it, is that unlike in most games of this genre the A.I here (both enemy and allies) make smart decisions. Though sometime it does feel like enemies can spot the player even when not possible depending on the difficulty. Gun play and overall action is emersive and has kick and weight to it when you either shooting or stabbing.

As for the story, it is not perfect and not everyone will enjoy it. I myself was not a fan until 5-6 Horus in I was able to realize the narrative and themes to be set forth (as mentioned above) It truly requires the player to use perspective in the matter, and to view the characters not as characters but as people, that are not to be simply classified as good or evil. Their choices will never be stagnant require thought to see into.

Overall I spent 32 hours playing The last of us Part2, it was not a perfect experience nor truly great but very enjoyable non the less if the player is truly willing to put the work in, and not see the story from one particular view point but to use perspective. For me the game is on verge of a soft 8 and a hard 7, but ultimately lands on a 8, truly a game that blurs the line between a movie experience and a gaming experience.

This game is probably the worst thing that has happened in video games since Fortnite . Insanely repetitive, full of plot holes, outdated graphics and most importantly LGBT heroes. The really important aspect of "The Last of Us" as a game, and now franchise, was the story and the relationship between the main characters. On this sequel, everything that people loved was utterly destroyed and literally spitted out by the developers. The worst part? They made it on purpose.

"The Last of Us Part II" is the most recent and important proof of what happens when the developers are most concerned about "subvert expectations" than telling a good story. If this game wasn't named "The Last of Us" no one would be defending this poor excuse of a plot.

If the critics are allowed (and of course paid) to exaggerate the good aspects of the game to give it a 10/10. The fans are allowed to exaggerate the bad aspects of it to give it a 0/10.

This game and apparently the Naugthy Dog of these days, represent everything that is wrong with the industry and its just sad. But hey, my expectations where indeed subverted since I thought it would be a good sequel and story and resulted being trash.

Graphically I was expecting more compare to other games like uncharted 4, GOW and HZD. They went too lazy.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Perfect from all points of view, I hadn't spent years attached to the Playstation with my heart in my throat for continuous emotions. The main characters were perfectly balanced, like the perfect equation, I enjoyed every single moment spent playing, I loved both characters, I cried for Joel, I cried for Dina, but in the end I thought that there could be no ending best. Abby, Ellie, you will always remain in my heart. Brava NaughtyDog, you have done an excellent job. Expand

I think this game was amazing and all about perspective and character and world building. The cast and crew did an amazing job with writing and acting. It was an emotional ride and tied with the first game as my favorite games of all time thank you Naughty Dog for the wonderful experience that was these 2 games and I look forward to future games. The only thing I will say it ignore what other people have to say and experience this for yourself. Expand

Neil makes you feel sad by destroying The Last of Us. Very Talented. This same effect however, can be achieved by snapping the disc in two.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
