First off, I can't understand why so many Critics gave The Last of Us: Part II a 100 Rating... Nothing about the game could be improved, noting at all? its just so perfect? I find that hard to believe. Same goes with all of the 0 ratings from the User Reviews. Nothing could be worse?

    Graphics 10/10
I think it was absolutely great, there was several times where I stopped just to take in the scenery. Its not often I find myself to just stop and enjoy something visual in a game.

    Mechanics 8/10
I enjoyed being able to upgrade your weapons, traits, and then crafting useful tools to assist you with the enemies. Breaking glass to get into a room that is locked. Crawling on the ground to get to different places even to hide sometimes. What i didn't like was, every encounter was like TAP SQUARE to get out of a situation. About 1/3 into the game I found my self hitting square before it was even promoted to do so. I wished it was switched up with other buttons or actions. The AI, I feel could have been a bit better.

    Story 6/10
    So much to say.

I never seen any of the leaks, and still haven't, but I had a feeling the story would revolve around Ellie getting revenge for the death of Joel. The reveal trailer had Joel coming from a white light type background and then when it was confirmed by Neil Druckmann that Ellie was the "only playable character." So it didn't surprise me that Joel was killed. The way Joel is murdered, it felt like Ellie deserves to get revenge. All though she had been resenting to Joel for two years before. That is when she learns what really happened at the end of the first game.

The slap to the face came after knowing what has happened your forced to play as Abby, the one that kills Joel. At that point I wanted to stop playing because I simply did not care about her story or her background. After a while I did understand why she wanted killed Joel, but not enough for me to care or overlook it. I found dying as Abby to be satisfying, especially when as Abby you have to fight Ellie. The first several "attempts" I walked out in the open just to let Ellie kill Abby.
From a story telling perspective your player base shouldn't want to die playing as one of the main characters. It was such a disconnect for me from the game. I think it would have been better to tell most of the story (other than the ending) in a different order, such as building Abby's character before she kills Joel.

The ending was mostly a waste in my opinion. After Abby lets Ellie live for a second time only because a supporting character that you save as Abby is there. She goes off to live on the farm with Dina (which you find out is pregnant early on in your search for Abby) and her baby. At least ten months have passed since the last encounter with Abby, and it seems like Ellie has moved on. Or at least one would think until Tommy shows up with information on Abby's whereabouts. Ellie then decides again that she must get revenge for Joel at the cost of her and Dina's relationship. Ellie saves Abby from torture and possibly death so she could fight Abby one on one. During the fight Abby bites off two of Ellie's fingers at which point Ellie goes to drown Abby to ultimately let her go free, out of nowhere. in ten plus hours of playing as Ellie there is no hint that Ellie would let Abby live. It comes out of the blue, out of left field. In the end Ellie's quest for revenge left her with nothing. Dina and he child is gone, not to mention one of her friends killed at the end of her quest to find Abby. As well a missing two fingers hindering her abilities to play the guitar (that Joel gave her) and leaves it behind in the empty house. I guess its supposed to be her finally moving on and having closure.

I sorta get that Ellie is supposed to "end the cycle of revenge." However who is not to say the hundreds if not thousands of people that Ellie kills on her way to get to Abby, that their loved ones wouldn't want to seek out Ellie and kill her. That is quite literally what happened to Joel.

I feel like the whole game rely on you believing what Joel does at the end of the first game was horribly wrong. So that you can get past Joel's death and accept Abby's actions. It make me think that Naughty Dog wants to expand the Last of Us series beyond Ellie and Joel to tell other stories. However the game was marketed heavily on Ellie and Joel and kept Abby a secret, I think just to sell the game.

This is a story driven game and I believe it falls to deliver what they was trying to accomplish. For me that is half the score. The game is just okay, nothing to write home about.

The first is a masterpiece of storytelling, and unfortunately the sequel does not do it justice. Plot points are forgotten, or poorly handled, as well as the ending being extremely lackluster and void of reason. There are many who rate the game so low simply because of certain themes, but when playing the game itself, these 'SJW" themes are non-existent and handled very well. Overall, The last of us two is an incredible game, with a poor and lazy story. If you're a fan of the first, or love the world itself, I would recommend it for the experience itself, only when the game is eventually on sale. Overall, it is a technical marvel, but will be remembered for it's poor storytelling which does a disservice to The last of us brand, which should have been left alone after the first installment. Expand

I was furious about it. However after finishing the game, I accepted it. Accept that anything can happen to even someone that's strong. Some billionaires even fall and lives on the streets now. So why can't a video game character like Joel make mistakes?? Even if people are furious about the fact that he died too early. The character development for everyone else were amazing. The ending was another level of amaziness. Even though the game has some minor set backs., But it's still hands down one of the best games in gaming history. Naughty dog has done it again. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Is this game Controversial?  Yes.  Is this game going to make you feel very Uncomfortable at times?  Also, yes.  Is this game Good?  In my opinion, Heck Yes!  And here is why...

This highly-anticipated game carried with it tremendous pressure to deliver something that fans would love and which honored its predecessor - an almost unanimously loved game with equally loved anti-heroes in Joel and Ellie.  I'm truly sad to hear if you feel let down by this game because I can imagine how disappointing that would feel for me.  However, I loved this game, and I honestly cannot fathom anyone giving this game lower than a 7/10 - even if they hated the plot (a sentiment that many have been vocal about).  Let's talk about why I feel this way:

Graphics - 10/10 The game is visually stunning.  There are many times I paused my gameplay just to be still and admire the detail in the scenery.  In classic Naughty Dog fashion, attention to details such as 1. Footprints in snow/dust/blood.  2. Dripping of water from clothing.  3. Facial expressions of the playable character changing based on environment/action.  4. Unique interactions with the environment such as looking over your shoulder when walking up stairs backward.

Gameplay - 9/10 I found the gameplay significantly more enjoyable even than TLOU Part 1.  The addition of squeezing through cracks in the wall made evading or sneaking up on enemies more fluid.  Dogs who can smell your scent trail made attempted stealth turn into sudden shootouts and chases.  And the Stalkers!  OMG these things really tighten up the ol' sphincter when they jump out at you!  I can't give this a 10 because I found some of the "looting" a bit annoying after a while because it distracts from the story.  There is a setting to automatically pick up loot, and turning this on has made things much more enjoyable.

Story - 9/10 Writing - 10/10 Okay - Story vs Writing.  If I explained to you the plot of Star Wars: A New Hope, that is the story.  Now I ask you to write the script for this plot - that is the writing.  I totally understand why people would have an issue with the Story.  I love Joel and Ellie, and it was painful to see Joel die that way... and WAY more painful to see Ellie make the choices she does as well.  And the game took a big risk by having us play as Abby and relive Seattle from her perspective.  This isn't the story I wanted or asked for - but I genuinely appreciated traveling down this road and will not soon forget the experience.  The characters are complex and their story arcs are satisfying and real.  The writing is being bombed in reviews and I don't understand that.  Think about all the conversations and dialogue these characters have.  Each interaction develops character relationships and gives insight into the character dynamics - all while feeling like natural conversations.  Compare this to other games where dialogue is repeated in an unnatural way by NPCs.  TLOU truly feels more grounded.  Joel and Ellie's trip to the Dinosaur/Space museum is the new "giraffe moment" from part 1 - and it makes us feel ALL the feels.  It is a testament to the writing that spending time with Manny and Abby actually changed my mind about how strongly I disliked them both in the beginning.  And I love that the game handled the consequences of Joel's actions head-on in this game.  Joel lied to Ellie, and Ellie sensed this.  As sad as I am to see Joel die, it made his truthful moments with Ellie as he came clean even more powerful.

Voice Acting - 10/10 This game has a star-studded cast.  Heavyweights like Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, and Laura Baily deliver flawless performances - in addition to smaller roles like Isaac (voiced by Jeffrey Wright) leaving such an impression when he is only in 2 scenes!  Compare this to other AAA video games and nothing holds a candle to the performances here.  Each of the actors did an amazing job.

In conclusion - I would recommend that you play this game in its entirety.  I loved it.  It tells a unique story of love, loss, and consequences.  Love or hate the story, the team at Naughty Dog deserves respect for another groundbreaking game.

I know the game has it flaws like, the spacing, and when how they told the story it fells like they put all of the script out of order. It's hard to forgive... no, not what Abby did - I get that. But how she did it and under what circumstances. But to me Abby turned out to be a better person than Ellie. Or rather she developed into one. While Ellie remained that same bitter soul, that was supposed to die to give her life meaning but was robbed of that. And now she's lost... And that's probably another reason why people hate this game: we don't get to choose how the story develops and ends. Instead we're made to look at the conflict from both sides. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The problem is the story - visually is superb, but that's not enough... just like Matrix Revolutions.

I have noticed that something went a bit off the rails soon after Left Behind. In the first game, Ellie talks about Ryley as someone she loved, her best friend, and while playing Left Behind we see the bond between the two, the friendship that evolves in pure love. Ellie wasn't Ellie anymore she was a lesbian, no more Ellie in love but a damn label, a banner to wave to make a statement... all the press praise was mostly not about the game, but about the political statement. At that moment Ellie died, she turned into a cliche, a flat portrait of what she was... ruining the development of this game.
The whole game is permeated of this "we must make a statement" thing, and that damaged the characters a lot. The story doesn't flow naturally, it is so forced that it hurts - in the first game when we met Bill, his arc was already written, the fact that the actor W. Earl Brown decided that his partnership with Frank was romantic, it didn't change Bill behavior, the character just got deeper not only because he was gay, but because love was involved - Part II was au contraire built not around the characters, but around what they should represent, all about the label. Who cares if Joel since the beginning never trusted strangers and even decided to leave a family to die "someone will stop eventually". Who cares if every single time he trusted a stranger, someone he loved died; he trusts the soldier and Sarah dies, he trusts Marlene and Tess dies (and Ellie was about to die), he trusts Henry because of Sam (raiders don't hang out with kids) and as soon as he starts to like them, they die.
ND throws away everything out of the window because they needed Abby to become the strong lead of the game. That was not possible if Joel was still Joel from the first game, we needed him to forget about his past and act unnaturally, we needed him to trust strangers. We needed Tommy that saluted newcomers with shotguns pointed to their heads to turn into Mr. "Welcome to my place". We needed Abby to leave Ellie alive knowing she will eventually track her down, just like she just did with Joel. Bear in mind that we are in the same world where Joel that is no saint nor fool, killed in cold blood Marlene - just in case.
I wish that Ellie wasn't turned into an icon, I wish Neil Druckman might have had the chance to let the character and the story evolve naturally, without having to make a statement. ND already had a game with 2 female lead that did great, something to take inspiration from: "Uncharted The Lost Legacy", that game didn't have to make a statement and flowed just fine, being really progressive but somewhat "under the radar".

Basically all you have loved about the believable people in the first game is gone... there's nothing for us here, just plain forced character and bad storytelling.

People always complain that this is a bad revenge plot. But its actually a story of forgiveness.
If people realize it, they'll at least start understanding the true beauty of this game.

P.S: People complain that Ellie kills a lot of people so forgiveness doesnt make sense.
IF we are talking gameplay, lot of those encounters can be avoided with stealth. This makes the motivation of her killing to be "Killing to SURVIVE". Yes I know she does a lot of dark **** But thats why she realises in the end right?

This is not a happy ending kind of video game, it's more real than anything I've played before and the experience is something else. The story is very interesting and there's a sadness to it that's quite difficult to understand and accept, but kudos to ND for making it possible. There are parts of the game that are hard to get through because you feel this sadness, this anger towards some characters, you feel that life is not fair and you wish it were different. The characters were real, interesting and very deep, unlike anything I've seen before in a video game. The gameplay is fun, the mechanics are VERY different from the first one (especially in combat), but it makes it a lot of fun because you can play the same level using different techniques and strategies, which makes this game fun to replay many times.
In terms of the storytelling, I thought it was a huge risk that ND took with the way things went down, but ultimately, it was the right choice. I believe this game will mark all future gaming experiences, where video games start merging with other types of media (like films), which makes this game all that more interesting.
TLOU II is a must play, it's not the same to watch or stream it as it is to play it; the experience is very unique and different for everyone, which only adds to how awesome the game is. I recommend it for all fans of the original as well as people who look for games that touch heavy subjects and are not afraid to rethink their thoughts and ideals.

A fantastic game that deals with the fallout from the original story while presenting an entirely new narrative to interweave with it. The only reason IA fantastic game that deals with the fallout from the original story while presenting an entirely new narrative to interweave with it. Naughty Dog hits it out of the park with the same emotional intensity of the first game, and manages to do something no other game in my playing history has done: get me actually conflicted about the weight of my actions during gameplay. The only reason I don't give it a perfect 10 is because the enemy AI is still a bit silly at times (multiple enemies walking into the exact same spot I've melee killed three of their comrades in) and there were definitely times where I felt the game dragged during obvious "scavenging breaks" between action sequences. But ND does a solid job of still incorporating enough dialogue and story into these breaks that they still have a flow to them. Players will be split on some plot points, but I think that those automatically giving a 1 rating based on leaks alone obviously missed the point that the developers were making here. If you've already ruined the game for yourself by reading leaks, that's on you, because you missed out on an incredible experience that lives up to its predecessor. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. That being said, I still strongly recommend the game as its fantastic gameplay and unique, if imperfect, storyline left me with an overall positive outlook towards the game as a whole. The gameplay is mix of stealth, third person shooter, and survival/crafting. This aspect is the best element of the game as it greatly improves upon the already solid mechanics of the previous Last of Us. The game is fairly linear and is structured around a set timeline of events that take the player to various large set piece locations in and around the pacific northwest region of the United States. The story of The Last of Us Part II is perhaps the most questionable element. While it is emotionally driven and follows a strong cast of characters, the plot pivots sharply at times and lingers on tangential storylines that could have been cut out entirely or at least significantly trimmed down. These sections of the game feel overly long and drawn out to the point that the story’s momentum is abruptly halted and some entire chapters of the game feel needlessly tacked on. While I can admire the writers’ attempts to flesh out some of the game’s side characters and create a sense of worldbuilding, these portions of the are too long and tedious to justify their inclusion in the finished version of the game. Despite this, I feel that the overall story and brilliant gameplay are strong enough to justify purchasing the game. For those are huge fans of the previous game, I recommend giving it a chance and heading in with an open mind, despite some of the more scathing reviews. Overall 8/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the most beautiful and well done games. It's a masterpiece that maybe all the people will comprehend when they grow up. We have the right to not like something, but giving a score of zero to a game it's immature as hell!

And guys, let's accept the inclusion, humanization and deaths. So let me explain the most controversial. Guys, Joel's death was necessary for: (1) Ellie to seek revenge. She would need something very strong for that and something that we can connect, just to be shown that if we are mad, we are wrong too in the end. And ellie realizes this, why can't you? (2) For the moral of the story to say that revenge is bad and does not pay (3) To understand that everything in life has two sides. We hate abby but when we see her side, we can then know her motivation. Maybe at the death moment we are lost but until the game ends, we understand the entire situation. Guys, If you read game of thrones you will die hahaha
I agree that his death scene could be better written because joel is very suspicious, especially with strangers, how come he fell so easily in this trap? I think it should have been written better and they had the capacity for it, because the rest of the game is incredible and well done. But life is like that isn't it? We can't predict everything, so as Joel. But going all over the internet saying that the whole game is bad, is total **** disregard and blindness. The game is perfect, have stunning graphics and the better of the generation. Going back to the story: The game it's not about heroes like an avengers movie, it's about human beings trying to survive and live in a world that is totally different from ours. The game humanizes situations and shows how fragile we are. Can you imagine living in a world like that? In a blink of an eye you can die there. Games like that need immersion people, it is not a game to shoot around enemies and score points, It's a game to stop to absorb the story and think, and consecutively grow and value what you have and what you can lose. Ellie had the opportunity to sorry joel but she can't anymore, and that is a life lesson. If you want abby to die because they killed your favorite character, then you don't have understand neither the first game.

TLOU was such a perfect microcosm of a phenomenon this was always going to be a tough road for ND.....I enjoyed playing through TLOU2. It took about 29hrs and I took my time to poke around the highly detailed environments. While the core gameplay is very well put together, and the dialogue is excellent here, most of the story beats felt like a miss for me.... I simply couldn't get behind the characters un-darwinian decisions as most of them involve characters in the story making completely unsafe moves that threaten the safetey of their groups and in a post apocalyptic survival situation this felt off...(which is tough given the whole plot of the game banks on the audience routing for the characters need to get revenge at ANY COST). In some ways, having characters carry over from TLOU felt like a crutch and dragged plot pacing down. The story felt at its strongest when it focused on the newer characters for me. Also props to ND for not 'overwriting' the LGBTQ+ characters, TBH it was so well written, I didnt even give it any thought. I cant help but feel the main story beats would have landed better if they had a linear rather than 'chopped up' time line.

That’s life, people die, people grow up get over it. Everyone should delete the mentality that Ellie is going to act like a child when she is clearly an adult now, and that you should be able to bond with another character (Abby) because the world doesn’t revolve around Ellie and Joel sorry. I really liked the skirmish between the 2 and I was really enjoying the downfall of both characters, this game feels real to me and if you honestly didn’t feel any sympathy for Abby after losing her friends and/or seeing her at the end, then you’re just mad to be mad, get over it everyone gets what they deserve at the end. The visuals were stunning, everything about this game was awesome for me and I am glad I didn’t listen to others to shape my own opinion about this game, I took my time playing and enjoying everything about the game. Upgrading guns was awesome and collecting the cards was my favorite thing to collect in any game. There is nothing of value to be lost if you just don't ever acknowledge it.

Expand

This is surely one of the best game I've ever played. Good job ND

Think of anything in this story that landed that was a new connection in this game, not a holdover from the previous last of us (Tommy, Joel flashbacks, Ellie growing up, etc.) You can't, because it isn't there. Pain and cynicism don't make a story good, "ha ha, le ebic dark story" doesn't forgive you from actually having to write it well. Expand

What we expected vs what we got is a soulless game that tries to give you a lesson the wors way possible, it had really great potential but the inexperience of the Directors and whatever they tried to do just backfired horribly because it did not have a good structure, regardless the game have some astounding moments that without the story are enjoyable

Why I didn't just burn these 60$.......the story was just terrible. I don't care about the "agenda" or the LGBTQ characters. The story and characters are contrived. Especially Joel and Ellie did everything to fit into the games story, they didn't behave like they would in TLOU 1. I could have written more but I really am exhausted mentally after playing this game for 14 hours straight.

The game is simply amazing, the gameplay is awesome, and the graphics are the best of the generation, the immersion is the best I’ve experienced, the history is not perfect, it could be better, but is so good

Let me just say up front that I am a HUGE fan of Part 1 and consider it a masterpiece in storytelling and gaming. That being said even though I have mixed feelings about this particular sequel, overall after having played through it, I believe it is a worthy followup to the original. For those who hate the game, I get it and I truly understand your feelings. But putting ones personal feelings aside, one has to look at this game realistically and objectively. Anyone who played the original game understands that coming into this one that there would be consequences for the choices Joel made at the end of Part 1. To think that in this sequel Joel would not face the repercussions of his actions in some way shape or form and that this would be simply copycat of the original is borderline naive to say the least and it would have made for an unrealistic and uncompelling story. Is this a happy, feel good sequel? Not by a long shot. But I respect Naughty Dog for not doing fan boy service and for having the courage to craft a story and game that challenges player's beliefs emotionally and philosophically . In time, I believe that history will judge the Last of Us Part 2 as one of the most groundbreaking games of all times. Expand

There is less fighting for survival against clickers and more brutally murdering humans (and dogs) for revenge and whatnot. And you better prepare to feel guilty about it through flashbacks. It is so concerned with teaching you a lesson, it fails to tell a coherent story. What you loved in the original is not here in the sequel.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
