Honestly, the only thing that is preventing me from giving this a perfect score is the pacing. There is a point mid game where the perspectives switch and it jars the player out of the immersion that had been established. I feel the game would have functioned better by having the player tackle one day at a time as both Ellie and Abby in order to better establish the similarities these two actually share. The themes about revenge and an overall coming-of-age story really does play well into both character’s stories. Abby was a character that clearly had some walls she had built in order to protect herself and with Lev, he managed to break all of that down. In a way, Abby became Lev’s Joel. Ellie’s character is defined by the very obvious discomfort she shows when she tries to be a badass murderer like Joel was: Nora’s torture in the hospital, Trying and failing to interrogate Mel and Owen in the aquarium (resulting in her killing them in self-defense) and subsequently having a full on anxiety attack upon realizing that Mel was VERY pregnant. Ellie is NOT a murderer. She is empathetic and cannot kill in cold blood without repercussions. She isn’t Joel, as much as she tries to be throughout the story. The fact that Abby showed Ellie mercy TWICE and didn’t kill Dina by the wishes of Lev shows just how much Abby realizes that revenge isn’t always worth it. Her revenge on Joel led to her closest friends being killed. On the path of revenge, you dig two graves. Ellie didn’t learn the lesson of forgiveness until the final conflict with Abby. But the cost of her continuing her revenge, she lost everything upon her return to the farm. Dina and JJ are gone, presumably back to Jackson. Ellie lost the life she built due to her need to avenge Joel’s death.

Another high point in this is Tommy, I believe Tommy embodies that rage that never dies. He was the first to leave after Joel’s death, he didn’t even tell Ellie, who watched him die too and was his surrogate niece. Tommy acted as a catalyst to keep Ellie on her rampage for the sake of avenging Joel. Hell, Tommy nearly died at the theater conflict, but a lucky shot saved him (whether Abby intentionally missed is up for debate). Despite having been okay going back to Jackson that night, he continued trying to track Abby and Lev down. He MOCKED Ellie for wanting to let go and move on. He threw the point of the ending in the player’s face without us even noticing. Naughty Dog really nailed down the themes of forgiveness and the cost of revenge and it’s not often something like that is told in a video game. Again, pacing and establishing Abby’s life as you move through the city only to culminate with the conflict in the theater would have been a cherry on top and given the game the 10/10 for me.

The gameplay was amazing, but the story line was poorly executed. In the end I concluded the hours put in meant nothing. You actually have the same conclusion twice. But literally, when you complete the game ask yourself what was the point. Again great gameplay but the story fell off a cliff. This storyline tanked the franchise for me. You won't get me to waste my time again. Metacritic seems to be blocking actual negative user criticism. So let's see if this gets posted. TO BE CLEAR: I don't appreciate behind classified as some sort of phobic because I didn't not like the game. My review is not malicious, nor the product of some conspiracy. Again, the story line was very weak at best in my opinion. I loved the prior instalments and this did not come close. Expand

Grafik, Designs! Synchro alles top.

They are playing it safe when it comes to their palette in "fun factor". I would have loved to have seen more interactions with monsters and an independent day and night cycle. A good multiplayer will make the replaybility go up.

Storywise, i think they are trying new things to expand from what you would expect from their usual linear storytelling techniques you'll see in the uncharted and last of us series. But I think for a story with parallels between characters maybe they should have stuck with one plot instead of adding two. Abby's part ruined the momentum, it felt like a filler, took away from Ellie's progression, and made the end feel mute, but Lev's introduction is great so take the good with the bad.

Still it was an interesting experience, and the game deserves to be played. Not a lot of games reach this level of production, but it's not a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You have to play this game for yourself. Everyone has a different reaction. I will address 1 thing people are saying, they are saying it's riddled with plot-holes. It is not. I have played the game through 2.5 times total 52 hours. There aren't any MAJOR plot holes and have yet to notice even tiny ones. Every character action makes sense. Those of you saying that Joel would not go with Abby did not play the first game. He did the EXACT same with Henry and Sam. When a character is in the middle of a blizzard, with a horde of infected chasing them, they do whatever they have to do, similarly to being in the middle of a city hunting you down (Pittsburgh in Part 1) Is it more in character to be hostile to people you are FORCED to be with while you wait out a blizzard and horde? Or do you try to be friendly to a group of people that outnumber you and are actually pretty decent people prior to finding out that Joel is well, joel Miller.

There are valid criticisms for this game, there really are, but god if most of them aren't just people using buzzwords they don't understand to "criticize" the game.

Play the game for yourself, if you liked the first game you owe it to yourself, and if you didn't, well it's a lot different than the first as well so I say give it a shot.

But we were never here for Graphics and Gameplay. The first game excelled in its story and was praised for its depiction of characters.

Sadly, the same thing can't be said about this game. The Story feels like a bad fan fiction. The protagonists behave out of character and very often illogical.

Overall the legacy of the first game is not treated with respect. It's apparent that it was more important to ship some Agendas instead of making a good game. The ending especially feels like a punch to the face.

ND used to have a reputation, where you could buy each of their games blind and it would never be a waste. With this game, they have lost that privilege.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay: 9/10 This is obviously an improvement over the first game, it’s so fun to throw a bottle at an enemy, jump on top of them, stab them. Then shoot a guy with my last bullet before jumping back into the grass and re-entering stealth. All the systems and enemy AI work perfectly. I love how allies now hide from enemies naturally. The combat alone sells the game Ellie’s story: 8/10

The arc of revenge is wonderful, it’s not misery porn, it’s a detailed and beautiful character study about the cycle of revenge and seeing two peoples lives fall apart because of it Abby’s story: 7/10

This part of the game is easily the weakest, with some amazing moments, like when you find the people you’ve murdered as Ellie. It messes with your head like nothing else. However there’s serious pacing issues, and I think that’s the most valid complaints with this game. The story is done beautifully but holy **** does Abby’s segment get bad sometimes

This game is amazing, I don't understand why so many people hate it (well maybe I do but it feels like **** reason to hate it so much like this). I have some cons for sure, for example I just couldn't get over playing Abby, I wasn't able to sympathize with her (I know maybe I should, considering all the things even "good" poeple in this game did just like Ellie, but I just love Ellie :D) but it is what it is and pros surely overcome the few cons. It's just sad game af, people should try to understand what ND tried to tell us with this and love it for what it is, don't hate it because you didn't get what u wanted. Yea and maybe they could keep Ellie those two fingers at least :( so she can play the guitar, because that's one thing I didn't get..how could Abby bite off TWO fingers, where did she get the strength for it (her condition in that moment considered), maybe I am just dumb I don't know :D but it feels like it's impossible to bite off two fingers like that, but still..for me 10/10. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A technical masterpiece with a complex, mature story.

    - It's hard to look, and play, this game without thinking that it shouldn't be possible on 7 year-old hardware

    - The story kicks off with an unspeakable act that drives you to pursue revenge - no matter the cost

    - Throughout your journey you lose those closest to you because they cannot understand or share in your hatred and relentless pursuit of vengeance

    - Only when faced with performing an unspeakable act of your own do you reflect and wonder, "Was it worth it?"

Some people may be disappointed that they don't get the revenge they were desperately hoping for but, IMO, that would have been a bad, generic story that betrays its characters and our understanding of them.

The only thing keeping me from calling this a 10/10 are a few, very minor, gameplay decisions that add up to the loss of a single(meaningless) point.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the start, the precedent it sets, the world building of Jackson, Ellie's character, the characters around her... everything. The the switch to Abby, the mysterious but impending realization that they're after Joel and then finally the murder of Joel. Let me tell you something, no other game has made me feel so bad/sad/angry at the same time. Then when Ellie sets out for revenge and all the Ellie part is awesome. At that point the game was 20/10 for me. Then the Abby part i felt was a bit drawn out. I loved the story of Abby, but as a character she is the most hated. I've never hated someone so much in my entire life. The thing about this game is that it sets you in a parallel. Both Ellie's and Abby's path are parallel. It's just how it changes from person to person is what matters. The most amazing thing was that, in my 10 years of gaming, playing God of War, RDR 2, Horizon, Uncharted Series, Spider-Man etc, none of them could muster up SO much EMOTION that it felt like I was the one committing that said act. When Ellie is choking out Abby at the end right? it felt like my hands (I) was choking out Abby, and at that point I wanted Ellie to stop. I wanted her to not become what she set out to hunt. And she stopped. I'm going to be honest at 90 % of the game I felt like it was an 6/10 or 7/10 , but at that moment, the mere FACT, that I felt like it was me that was choking out Abby, that it was my hands that were committing that act, that's when it became 10/10 for me. I think that if they would've pulled off this game in any another way, ANY other way, I wouldn't have felt that in the end. Expand

Gran trabajo ND Expand

Building a story on the killing of a loved character (the character that the entire first part is built on) and then forcing players to go to certain locations everytime you get to a location then you have to go to another (turned into a traveling game just go and find that person i understand it's not that horrible but when you do it throughout the entire game it becomes really bad) the characters are pointless, isaac only appeard twice while his name was mentioned even more than joel and then simply dies. anyway after a while it gets really boring and then comes the worst twist in video games i have ever seen forcing players to play the villian and forcing them to understand why that happend. That was the worst thing you can think of, every character has a backgroud whether we know it or not and yes life sometimes is unfair as what it did to joel in the first part and no life is not always bad you have your moments of happiness and moments of saddnes just like what happend to joel and what haplend might be reasonble but the outcome was so bad and ellie ended up with nothing. i didn't like abby i understand why she did it but still she killed joel and i will never like her and being forced to play half of the game as abby and to witness her hypocricy, the game developers really tried to get you to like her and that was so obvious with the bad joke and the sudden acts of kindness.

Also turning abby into joel and lev into ellie was so bad and pathetic they will never replace them and you know that but you decided to do it anyway.

Lev story is no where near Ellie.
Ellie was the cure and lev is nothing but a charecter that was forced into the story to make abby an angel.

Good luck niel drukmann you will know what you did when the third part is relased and the real price will be paid.

These people who played the first part recently and never realised what joel and ellie meant will buy your bad story but the ones that got the last of us to where it is won't.

Yes it's your story but it won't mean anything without the people that appreciate it and the real fans did back in 2013.

those who bought it recently will never give you the hype that was given to you in 2017 to relase this game.

Also, allow the refunds and then you will realise how great your sales are.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was one hell of a ride, the entire time I was at the edge of my seat with suspense. The gameplay was smooth and incredibly fun, and I'm already playing it from start to finish again just to soak it all in even more. Lot's of people question the story but I think it was really well executed. The cast as expected from a Naughty Dog game is likeable and talented. The enemies do get a bit repetitive after a while, but I'm pretty sure that's just a shooter video game problem in general. I personally loved finding the notes and artifacts and learning more about the enemy factions through that. The game does a really good job of making you feel for your character, no matter who you are playing as. The new characters are interesting and sometimes I hated them while other times I loved them. The thing about going into this post apocalyptic game is to remember that not everyone will make it out alive, and the sooner you accept that, the sooner you will understand the situations that you are placed in. Naughtydog stated that this is not a 'fun' game, and while the usually grim story does reflect this idea, since often times I disagreed with the things I had to make Ellie do, I did have a lot of fun while playing! My only gripe is that it seemed to drag on for hours longer than necessary with the epilogue. I understand the importance of what they did there, but I would have been perfectly happy if they left out the entire piece with the rattlers. Expand

it does, they went for a revenge plot for the story and that was known from the beginning. They chosen to fuel this vengeance powerfully. You feel the exact same as Ellie felt. This is a duel narrative story where every character is humanized and at first you fight it. But overtime it slowly grows on you.

He has close ties with Anita Sarkisian (anti-gamer) and you can tell she played a major influence in this game. When it comes to The Last of Us Part II, it's some of the worst story telling from all games prior.

The only positive I could think of while playing The Last of Us II was how amazing the graphics are, but it's the epitome of proof graphics are not everything to make a good game.

Reviewers are right to compare this with Game of Thrones season 8, because that is where it falls in line in terms of story and character development. Not only do the characters from the original TLOU do things that are totally out of character all to move the plot along, but what happens to them is disrespectful and infuriating. It is not joke to say the story is not only a slap in the face to the fans, but a hard hitting nuke to head with Druckmann pissing agenda on the ashes (Yes, it's that bad!).

Aside from story, the gameplay is average at best, and mediocre at worst. While the original The Last of Us was ground breaking in terms of gameplay and story, it's a game that is now six years old! Part II does nothing groundbreaking from it's predecessor, and feels very last generation with very little to offer. It is a tedious exploration going from one area to the next, fighting hordes of enemies over and over only to have another cinematic with characters I care nothing about. After a while I just want to stop playing The Last of Us II altogether, and move onto something more enjoyable like God of War.

I truly believe with Niel Druckmann at the helm it will be the end of Naughty Dog after playing The Last of Us II. I feel terrible for the employees that work under him, their blood, sweat, and tears for an oppressive manager like Niel will only bring morale down within the company. Hopefully ND will realize the mistake they made with Niel and beg for Amy Hennig to come back to take the reigns again. It is wishful thinking, but it's going to be sad from here on out knowing how my once favorite developer has fallen from grace solely for an agenda they want to force down upon others, and gamers are the ones who lose because of it.

So, with that out of the way, if you've read the leaks and decided not to play it, you're doing yourself a massive disservice. This game is a technical and, yes, storywise, a masterpiece. I didn't personally like some of the elements in the game. But that doesn't make it *objectively* bad. It's like this - mango may be my favorite ice cream flavor. So it doesn't mean all other ice cream flavors are bad. I can still enjoy very much many other ice cream flavors if the one I want isn't available.

This is a LONG game. It really takes you on a journey that turns several characters' fates on their heads. It makes you feel intense hate, grief, joy, misery and fear. So, buckle up. Let all your preconceptions and prejudices go and just let the creators tell the story they wanted to tell.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Incredible game. One moment it had be tearing up, then it had me laughing, and then it scared the **** out of me. The acting and writing in this game are unparalleled. If there was an Oscar for video game acting, this game would clean house.

The game is also filled with jaw dropping set-pieces and some of the best animation I've ever seen in a game.

I understand why some people are upset or disappointed with this game, even if I don't share their sentiment. The deciding factor of whether you like this story or not rests on accepting its inciting incident. Personally, I like the direction it takes. The only death that could have provoked such a warpath for Ellie is the death of Joel, and I thought it was handled beautifully, especially the scenes of Ellie reminiscing in Joel's home, her inability to finish Joel's song, and the emotionally resonant flashbacks.

Liking the story also hinges on how you feel about Abby. I personally liked Abby--I found her personality more likable than Ellie's. She had a deeper moral depth, and her reasons for killing Joel are, I believe, justified.

The score should also be mentioned. It had me hooked right from the start with several standout moments like the early sequence in the mountain forest. The music lent itself to the tension. And **** this is a tense game. At several points I had to pause to catch my breath, especially in the subway tunnels, the Descent, and Ground Zero.

The Last of Us Part II is a heavy game, dealing with difficult themes. Where the first game explores the lengths one goes to for love, this one explores the lengths of hate and revenge. Joel gave up the development of a cure for his love for Ellie, and Ellie gave up everything for her hatred of Abby. And I believe Ellie would have lost even more if she had killed Abby, because the satisfaction of revenge is rarely something that lasts, like what Abby experienced after killing Joel.

Overall, from the tense gameplay to the gripping story, this is hands down one of the best games I've ever experienced. I highly recommend it, even if I know some people will not like it.

As someone who has actually played and finished the game, I can tell you that in no way is it deserving of the hate and zeroes it is receiving. Though it could not have succeeded without the world/character building of the first game, I thoroughly enjoyed it more. For me, I went in with all the spoilers. I knew Joel would die. I knew I’d play as Abby for 10+ hours. I knew Ellie wouldn’t kill her at the end. I went in ready for this game to be flaming garbage. I went in hating Abby. By the time I finished her first day, I could already feel myself warming up to her. And I really didn’t want to. But that’s the point. That’s the execution that Naught Dog excelled at: Making the player realize that this situation isn’t black and white. Nobody is really a villain. I can’t hate Joel for dooming the world because he did it to protect Ellie. I can’t hate Ellie for killing all of Abby’s friends because she killed Joel. And I can’t hate Abby because she is a reflection of both of them. Like Ellie, she sought revenge after the death of her father. And like Joel, she redeems herself as a person and finds love and healing in a younger counterpart that she learns to care for. As for the ending, I can’t imagine someone playing through this entire game and still wanting to kill Abby. If that’s what you drew from this experience, you missed it by a longshot. I found myself repulsed during both of Abby and Ellie’s fights, wanting to let them both go. I cared for both of the characters, and it wasn’t easy to fight them. This game makes you feel how revenge poisons character. It’s beautiful. And for those who disagree with Ellie’s final decision, I’ll say it again, you missed the point. The point is forgiveness. This game is trying to teach you that forgiveness is so much harder and painful than revenge. This game drives that point home hard. And I loved every second of it. Expand

The Last of Us 2 is terrible as a story driven game. There are plot holes within it that just don't make sense, and it's not just one or two, but more than enough that will stick out like a sore thumb. It's also confusing to have the story move all over the place, even at one point in the game there is a flashback within a flashback. I just loved the game, loved the way they told the story, loved the characters, I ended up having sympathy for Manny, Owen, Mel, Nora, Yara, Mel and even Abby who I thought I was going to hate to dead, I truly believe that this game is a masterpiece, even though I don’t agree with all the decisions that the writers had. I also loved the new characters like Dina and Jesse, I thought they were going to be just there, but they are truly important on the story, I could be keep writing why I loved this game so much, but I’m just gonna leave in how cool the ending was, seeing how Ellie ends up **** up because of her revenge, she end up losing her family, and she is not able to play the guitar, which was her way of remembering Joel. 10 out of 10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a fan review. It’s important to note, because I’m not a hardcore gamer. I’m a fan of The Last Of Us, which I believe set the standard for story telling in video games. The Last Of Us 2 dismantled that standard for better or worse.

Don't get me wrong, TLOU2 is a great game that makes incredibly progressive and interesting story decisions, but it’s an action game first and foremost. It's not a story-telling vehicle disguised as a videogame. That comes across in the level design. There is no way to play the game successfully without killing just about everything and everyone (including dogs – much to wife’s severe unhappiness). You can sneak past some areas, but you'll miss vital resources and almost always get killed a few times in the effort. The character development and story progression is basically designed around game-play with few exceptions, i.e. the flashback with Joel and Ellie at the Natural History Museum. Taking that into consideration, the game falls into the “great” category. It’s really fun, incredibly violent and awesomely challenging.

The problem with TLOU2 is the lack of respect the writers had for the source material coupled with their attempt to moralize and manipulate. I read a great deal of negative and positive reviews after I played through the entire game. To be frank, I’ve been processing the story for about a day. In my humble opinion (I’m never wrong), the negative reviews are as legit as the positive. Very few people actually care whether the central characters are gay/transgender – they are upset because Joel is tortured and murdered by a character that they are then expected to not only play but to eventually sympathize with. It’s not an easy transition and I found myself more than once placing Abby in the line of fire just to watch her head explode. However, it ultimately works. I like Abby and, after I got over the initial hatred, I really enjoyed playing with her set of skills. I acknowledge that the writers are being manipulative by establishing Abby’s picture-perfect relationship with her dad, by introducing Lev and Yara, by turning Ellie into a killer of pregnant women and dogs, by giving Owen a bit of depth when he choses to spare a Scar, but those moments give nuance to the journey. I forgive them.

What I can’t forgive is the third act. There are so many misfires in the story’s conclusion that it’s pointless to try to innumerate them. Let’s just say that Ellie and Abby learn absolutely nothing from the experiences that have been clumsily designed to teach the game player that the cycle of revenge is self-destructive. Wouldn’t it have been great if Ellie had actually learned something before she lost everything? Wouldn’t it have been nice if Abby could have expressed acknowledgement if not an outright apology for killing Joel who basically rescued a 14-year-old girl from being murdered for the chance of saving millions? Let’s not forget (as the writers have) that Ellie was not revived or consulted in the decision, and Joel was marched away at gunpoint by Fireflies who would have rather killed him. Yes, there are two sides to every story, but the ending to TLOU2 is so bleak, so joyless, so aggravating, so pointless that it dramatically overshadows what could have been another game-changer in videogame industry. So close.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have to be careful to not let my emotion sour an objective review of the game. Many people have rated it in the red, but in terms of gameplay, mechanics, graphics, sound and otherwise the quality of the game I would say is elite. The variety of options for moving around and taking on enemies (from infected to people), with different weapons, stealth, attack, distractions and such is great.

However...... The Last of Us as a whole was built around a story, and a very deep story at that. The development of Joel and Ellie in game 1, surviving the world and challenges together gave the player a deep emotional connection to these characters and the storyline of the game as a whole. I feel The Last of Us Part II took a big **** on those characters and our connection as players to those characters. *SPOILERS BELOW*

There are definitely holes in the plot and in the character behavior itself, such as Joel and Tommy losing their survival instinct and skepticism that has kept them alive for the past 20+ years, and Ellie going on a nationwide manhunt, killing hundreds of people mercilessly just to decide against killing the one person shes after...

I do not mind the fact that Joel died, however it could have been done much better, and would have preferred it to happen later in the game. The biggest issue I found with the game was the fact that we were forced to play as Abby (Joel's murderer) and for such long periods. Not only that, but we also had to fight against Ellie as this character. I found this all to be a huge disrepect to the player and our bond with Ellie and Joel, and because of that it made the game unenjoyable to play through those parts (a solid 10-14 hours worth).

There were some real moments, especially between Ellie and Joel in flashbacks, and the emotion felt by her during the death but unfortunately the rest of the game and story overshadowed that.

In the end, my rating are as such:
    • Gaming = 10/10 (brilliant visuals, mechanics, sound and otherwise)
    • Story = 2/10 (a huge disrespect to the player, characters and survival dynamic)
    FINAL SCORE = 6/10

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
