I can say that I've finished the game and waited about a week for my thoughts to set in. And to be honest, I really liked it. And for a game to take around 20-30 hours, I would go as far as to say that nobody actually played the game and only read the online leaks that were posted about a month prior. The leaks on their own sound pretty bad, and it does sound like lazy and awful writing, but in the context of the story, I promise you it makes perfect sense. The themes of the game is what make it so incredible, it's ultimately about how characters deal with grief, actually even part 1 was about dealing with grief, so anyone who says this game is untrue to the original, clearly hasn't played the game. Naughty dog take a very bold choice with the story and it really puts you into Ellie's mindset with the feeling of pure hatred, but the genius of it all is when they show you the other side to the story. This is when you start becoming conflicted and you actually start to empathise with people you really think you wouldn't. Personally I prefer the first game, but this wasn't a disappointment at all. The reason it's not a 10 for me is because of some pacing issues towards the middle of the game and I preferred the general story of the first game as that was near perfection. A great sequel from Naughty Dog and looking forward to what they next bring to the table. Expand

The story line seemed to continue where the last one left off.... early death of the father figure was both rushed and telegraphed in - and what followed became predictable ...... Its like we need to be told that doing bad stuff is bad mmmkay? Seriously this game makes got season 8 looks like a masterpiece. Then it turns into Dexter season finale.

The force you to play the character that kills Joel - and just force feed you her story...when you already know what happens to everyone in her story. They try to make you feel back about the things you've already done - and it doesn't work.

30 hours later - I give nearly zero fcks about Abby and her crew. The interesting characters get killed off and we're left with a shallow, on the nose story line and 3 characters surrounded in plot armor.

I'm giving it a 0 - even though it's like a 6-7 because I want to send a clear message to any developer in the future trying to pull this nonsense again.

It's entirely possible to make a game sequel without **** all over the original.
Those left behind - amazing. The last of us 1 - amazing. This? We deserve better. 20 hours of playing as a character I don't care about. They forced

In some sort of attempt to make it original it's...ironically...some of the most cliched and infuriating story choices i've ever played, playing certain sections just made me want to put down the controller and turn off my PS4.

Positives are that it looks amazing, the locations are truly incredible. It sounds amazing and has some decent gameplay (besides the nigh constant resource scavenging which is infuriating), but doesn't improve too much over Part 1.

However, that alone doesn't excuse this mess, don't listen to the IGN's etc, that call this a masterpiece...it's not, not even if you are a fan of part 1...which is a true masterpiece.

Neil Druckman, if you are seriously proud of this story, then you shouldn't be allowed to make any more games.

I can't believe we had to wait 7 years for this joke...I wish i could erase Part 2 from my memory and believe that there isn't a sequel. Don't buy this game, just pretend the end of Part 1 is the end of this story.

In the end, everyone reconciled and just waited. But then the irreparable happened, a lot of videos from the game were leaked, whole cutscenes, fights, etc. I think that this is the reason for all the misfortune that this game faced. For many people, torn scenes from the context gave them an erroneous opinion about the whole product. All this, of course, fueled the integration of LGBT people into the game (which, in fact, does not matter much in the game), and this topic has been very problematic in recent years. I am sure that the studio and Neil knew that this would happen and consciously took a risk. However, Ellie and her story have been crushingly criticized. I hope that in the future, people will learn to criticize a product only after they are fully acquainted with it.

I have been waiting for the game for 5 years and for me it is not just a hobby, it is a personal story into which I was drawn. And I waited, waited patiently, but then leaks that were impossible to get away from (social networks, YouTube and everything else is an integral part of life now). And it really ruined my impressions, I was very upset. But despite this, I enjoyed this incredible story for 30 hours. About which I will say only a little. The plot is not something unique, we have already seen this in world cinema, but the presentation itself and how we learn the history from all sides makes this game beautiful. And it is heartbreaking, however, all as promised to us, only pain, revenge and a circle of violence.
Everyone will always find cons for themselves, but really something that spoils the game is not here. If Naughty Dog were asked what I didn’t like in the game, I would only remember about the NPC that sometimes interferes with passing and about enemies who do not always act logically.
Summing up, I want to say that I am grateful to the studio, to every person who worked on this incredible game. I do not stop watching a video about development, listening to podcasts, and watching early Art in Istagram. Thank you very much for everything.
Despite the huge damage from the spoilers, I can still say that the game broke my heart and in the end I cried. I think that was exactly what was intended so that the story of Ellie would destroy not only her, but also us, the last of us.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sometimes it take more than just play a game to understand it. The game not only is beautiful and the gameplay nice, the story makes you question choices and the path that you take. To acknowledge the greatness of this game you have to put aside your resentment playing as Abby and even though it’s easier to hate her and to want to see her dead, it’s a good reflection on humanity and the ability to understand each other. You don’t have to like her, nor forgive her. But you seriously lack empathy if you can’t understand her motives for what she’s done. The story is great in the sense that they didn’t sugarcoat anything and they stay truthful to what they wanted to tell as a story. Many games are too politically correct and lack strong statements. This one doesn’t and that’s why people have a hard time with it. It’s not what they wanted to see. The game is accused of being political and being propaganda for the lgbtq+ community among other things. Well if you think that you are too immature and too close minded to play grownup games.
The game is about hate, you’re not supposed to love it like you love playing animal crossing or fortnite. It’s supposed to make you feel anger and sadness and hate and grief. That’s precisely what makes it a great game. It’s not a perfect game but at least it takes risks and talks about important matters such as regret, love, hate, hope and redemption.
They are some big negative aspects of course like the fact that Abby and the other wolves aren’t very likeable or the events order could have been changed to help some players build a bit of empathy. Truth is I don’t like any of them either but I know enough with the little back story that has been given to us that they aren’t bad people to the core.
Finally the ending left me unsatisfied and even if I wished for a happier ending, a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel, I’m happy they didn’t give In stayed on the path they chose, telling you there’s no happy ending for revenge.

A story driven game has to have good writing, few plot holes, and consistent characters. I was very disappointed By the lack of heart this game had. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Obviously the user score isn't reflective of the quality of the game itself, but rather the projected insecurities of those that haven't even played it. When the game was leaked, people criticized it for the way that they disrespectfully killed off Joel or how Abby is supposedly trans. Now that the game is out, all of those points just seem to fizzle away. The truth is there, plain and simple... Naughty dog made an incredible game. They killed off Joel early on in a brutal way but the reasoning behind that was expanded upon later on. I had seen people stop playing or give up the game at that point, even going so far as destroying their disk. Those people will miss out on the context and expansion of Joel's character via the various flashback exposition moments between Ellie and Joel in the off moments between Part 1 and 2. Joel is a fantastic character, an excellent father figure, but a **** awful human being for what he decided to do to save Ellie. He shot up a hospital, killed Marlene, killed the only medical professionals that could have created a cure for all of the innocent people left alive, just for him to have his daughter figure still in his life. Over the course of the first game as you progress by killing dozens of people but those were usually cases of self defense, the moment Joel first killed in Seattle, he was strictly on the offensive and a lot of people were desensitized to the fact that he was killing due to them just being random enemies just like every other encounter. The Last of Us Part 2 expands on that by humanizing the WLF. While brutal, they're still humans that are just trying to survive. They appear to be backpacked survivors just like Joel and Ellie, they call each other by name, they get devastated upon discovering the bodies of one of their friends/comrades/dogs that have been slaughtered by you or the Scars. This new perspective simply expands on what you're really facing and if you're really the good guy in the story. It's highly debatable if what Joel and Ellie do in the games that would be considered "right" but those lines become more apparent the more you kill. Joel was a selfish monster that let his own feelings of losing a daughter again take over, dooming humanity. I've discussed this with others and people came up with the argument that Joel had finally found something worth fighting for and living for in a game where it constantly was showing you that humanity was beyond redemption or repair. The more you see Jackson thriving in the second game, you see that a chance at a normal life was a reality that nobody had considered and that a vaccine would have saved so many innocent lives of civilized people. Ellie begins to follow in Joel's footsteps by murdering every one in her path in order to enact vengeance against anyone involved in the death of Joel. An emotional, irrational, response to people that were perfectly in their rights to hunt down a mass murderer of innocent doctors and civilians looking to better the world. Sure it may feel cathartic and satisfying to hunt down these people and get your revenge but that difference in perspective gets thruster onto you when you begin to play as Abby. You peer into the lives you've destroyed or devastated in the events of the first game and you see that you're not the hero that your protagonistic bias has led you to believe. You're becoming the horrifying monster that Joel was, and in that the game's message became clear. This is the circular path that revenge will always be. Abby understands it better than Ellie which is why Abby leaves Ellie alive TWICE. Which brings me to my second point, as of the release of the game the leaks were wrong in the regard that Abby is trans. She's not and that was confirmed. Regardless of if she was trans or not, it was clear just how much spite people had towards a character like her. She's not pretty and she's not meant to be pretty and it pissed people off that they're forced to play as "the ugly villain". I won't even begin to address the hatred against transgender individuals being the motivator for so many negative reviews because that's not a valid point to be making. Abby is muscular, built like a fridge with those broad shoulders. We see in the flashbacks she wasn't always that way, but after the death of her innocent father she trained hard to be able to be strong enough to kill the man who killed him. Sure she might not be the most relatable character you've ever played in a video game, but her perspective was necessary to tell this two incredibly different sides to the same story. You're not meant to like her, you're meant to understand her. The game itself I feel had expanded quite nicely while staying true to the gameplay of the first. The controls were familiar but with an accessible expansion of convenience in terms of weapons and crafting. The strongest commendation I'd give is the sheer attention to detail when it comes to storytelling and gameplay. Expand

The Story for me was 10/10 and perhaps the most ambitious and heart-wrenching narrative in any video game that I have played. I understand that for some people some of the narrative choices made are irredeemable, but to get the most out of this game you have to be willing to empathise and forgive, just as readily as you hate the characters.

If you go into the game expecting a safe sequel for the first game this is not what you are going to get. The world naughty dog created is brutal and the story and gameplay reflect this. At the beginning of the game, the realistic violence can leave one with a sense of glee ( who doesn't find it funny blowing up a guy and watching him disappear in a cloud of mist), but after a while, after killing dogs, listening as the friends of the enemies you kill scream out their fallen comrades names you start to feel disillusioned with the character's righteousness. By the end of the game I was begging Ellie to end this revenge; no game has ever made me feel like this, not since the first the last of us.

Abby's section of the game is genuinely one of the best, once you start to accept her. There was an initial slog at the beginning of her first day, but once you get captured by the seraphites she really comes into her own, and has some of the best set pieces and gameplay moments in the whole game. The stalker fight in the forest, all of day 2 and the scouring of the seraph island were perfection.

Overall a 10/10 game, well worth the seven year wait.

Story: Divisive and emotional, like all good works of art are. The narrative shows that no one is neither good or bad, but capable of do good or bad.

Gameplay: A refinement of the original gameplay with good new mechanics, like the ability to dodge attacks with L1, an the ability to go prone, wich helps a lot in stealth sections.

Graphics: It makes me think I don't need a PS5 right now...

    Debilidades

Contrary to what most people expected, the game doesn't offer a flat, linear, kill-them-all story but makes us reconsider who is on the good or the bad side of it, to eventually conclude that there is no hero in this one. Joel and Ellie weren't samaritains in the first episode and that had consequences as well as the fact that the newly hated character of Abby isn't a bad character either. As such, the story is far for being simple and is yet bashed or mocked by people around here. Don't believe the hate hype. Try and the game and make your own opinion. I actually found this part as enjoyable as the first one.

Even though the game is much more accessible and more story-based than the first one, you can't truly experience it without going through it on "hard" or "survival" difficulty. It took me more than 30 hours to complete it and I enjoyed every second of it. You sometimes just need to step back, think for yourself, and consider the fact that a spin-off can never be the same as the original. It offers a new perspective by questioning his original point of view and his role on the first episode.

As a continuation of the story set up in the first game it falls flat. I think most of the new characters are shallow at best and forgettable at worst, except for Lev who was the only new character I enjoyed learning about. If this story had been about other characters in the same world it would have been a good story but since it, about Ellie, Abby, and Joel I feel cheated out of the story that was portrayed in trailers and set up at the end of the first game. Some of the best parts of this game are the flashbacks where we see Ellie and Joel grappling with Joel's betrayal of Ellie's trust. In these scenes, the masterpiece of the first game shines and I just wish the whole game focused on that story instead of what we got. In summary, this is visually one of the best games ever created I just wish it had a narrative that was as enjoyable as the graphics. Expand

The Last of Us II is an undeniably divisive yet great game and one which I would recommend to any who would listen. Though the story is weaker than the first game I still found it incredibly enjoyable. It does lack an element of hope which may cause some to stop playing, however, if- like me- you enjoy darker gritty stories then you shouldn't find this a problem.
    My only major complaint
The Last of Us II is an undeniably divisive yet great game and one which I would recommend to any who would listen. Though the story is weaker than the first game I still found it incredibly enjoyable. It does lack an element of hope which may cause some to stop playing, however, if- like me- you enjoy darker gritty stories then you shouldn't find this a problem.
My only major complaint with the story lies in a few pacing issues (particularly in the first half) as well as tension build ups which are dragged on to the point where the tension simply dies out. There is one particular example where you are forced to wait a huge chunk of the game for one scene's tension to pay off. It would have also been nice to spend more time with 'that character' before 'that event' in the early game in order to make 'that event' a little more impact-full for newer players. Despite all of that, I found all character stories to be excellent and engaging and going into the game's second half and finale I found myself questioning my own decision in a beautiful and emotional battle of morals.
That brings me on to the gameplay which is nothing short of excellent. For me, the mediocre gameplay was the only thing holding back the original masterpiece and believe me when I tell you that the Last of Us part II takes everything that was good about the original's core gameplay and injects it with gallons of mobility, combat options, stealth options and fun! Whereas in the first game, the combat often felt like a chore stopping me from reaching the next story beat, here, the combat feels necessary and fun. Both new infected types are a blast to fight and the new human enemies are perhaps some of the most fun of all. Enemy AI is considerably smarter (though still slightly stupid at times (though this depends on the difficulty you play on) and enemies will actively keep you moving. Ally AI has also been greatly improved though I still noticed a few cases where my allies where quite obviously in view and not getting noticed. Nevertheless, the Last of US II's gameplay is nothing short of excellent and I greatly enjoy the feature which allows you to replay encounters you have already finished on different difficulties without having to replay the whole game. Players are also given the option to replay specific chapters which works incredibly well with the many collectables you can scour the rich environments for,
Finally, I will mention the graphics, though I'm sure you already know what I'm going to say. The Last of Us part II is the most gorgeous game I have played to date. The settings are stunning. The art work is stunning. The characters and animations are stunning. I also really appreciated the option to unlock and view concept art and virtual models and spent a considerably amount of time taking in each individual gorgeous detail which makes the Last of Us II's visuals so stunning.

As a side note, the 'political correctness' is not shoved in your face at all and most certainly does not ruin the game.

Overall, The Last of Us II is a great game. Is it as good as the original? In some aspects no and is some yes. Would i recommend it? Absolutely.
I don't play games to be pampered and given exactly what I expect; I play games to feel something and the Last of Us part II will certainly make you feel.

Dialogue: 4 - There is a lot left lacking here. In some cases, how the voice actors are reading the lines, but mostly the dialogue choices. So many characters stating out of character lines, it's not even funny.

Gameplay: 6 - There is not much different here than the first game, just another cycle of set pieces and environments to trek and battle through. I also ran into a lot of glitches where certain character models didn't load during death animations. I also once felt like I was going to drop through the map when hopping down off of a higher platform in an interior level. You could see the black above the level design.

Enemy AI: 4 - This is just downright horrid at times. Enemies on many occasions ran right past me. Even on the harder difficulties, this game was just too easy to stealth around and kill oblivious enemies.

Story: 0 - This by far is the worst aspect of this game. It is hard to get into the details without major spoilers, so I will say this. Stay very far away from this game if you played and liked the first game. I would call this game more of a disparaging fan fiction than anything else.

The plot just drags on and on without a reason, moving from scenes that would fit only in a spanish soap opera to gorey scenes written only to remember that you are playing TLoU2, thing that you would otherwise forget. Furthermore, the terrible pacing will drive you to madness and at the end you will feel as you have just been wasting 30 hours of your existence, due to the most horrible conclusion I have ever seen in a videogame. The answer, in my opinion, is no the hate was not warranted, and it most definitely lives up and exceeds the hype.

What naughty dog have achieved with this game transcends the medium. This is a bold narrative that will challenge you in your beliefs and dive into the complexity of human emotion. This is triumph from the beginning to the end.

The story worked on every level for me, and I understand this is highly subjective. It is very possible that the story does not work for you, but i implore anyone that is interested in this game to not buy into the hate vitriol and experience it for yourself if you can.

From a gameplay perspective, this is an evolution rather than a revolution. What worked in game 1 has been refined, and what was janky been polished. The stealth aspects have been tweaked and it is a blast to play through encounters, despite the bleakness and violence of this world.

I have a few gripes, with the length of the game being a small issue. I do believe that the last few combat encounters were one too many, and the game could have had a more laser focused narrative at the end. On easier difficulties, enemy AI can be a bit simple, but I think playing on hard and above gives you a real challenge.

Despite these small issues, i have still given this game a perfect score as a i believe full marks in this case is not perfection, but rather it recognises what is to my mind a masterpiece, and a story that will stick with me for years to come, and one that I will discuss and dissect extensively into the foreseeable future.

Things went for a turn about halfway through the game when you get to see things from Abby’s eyes. Getting to see her story and WHY she sought out Joel in the first place. Seeing her relationships before things took a turn for the worse. This time around, the story line is riddled with massive plotholes and goes for shock factor instead of good writing. While I think that trailers and marketing campaigns shouldn't spoil a game, there is a line where it goes from being anti-spoiler to flat out lying to trick fans into buying the game for false reasons, and Naughty Dog went over than line numerous times.
Gameplay wise, it is exactly the same as the first one. That's not exactly a bad thing, if it ain't broke don't fix it, but it only worked in the first one because of the story, where every cutscene brought new and interesting plot development, why what you were doing and where you were made sense. This time around it is just tedious, side mission after side mission that aren't important, fighting the exact same enemies in the exact same way hundreds of times.

TL;DR Don't buy it. Graphics good, game-play poor, storyline abysmal.

This game could be a hit... BUT it was killed by feminism provided by Anita Sarkeesian. Story is total BS. As you remember, first trailers showed us, that Joel helps Ellie on getting the revenge. But strong male character wasn't what Anita wanted and they changed initial plot. And created unrealistically big Abbie-bodybuilder (btw, ever mrs Olympia doesn't have such big arms). This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This gamebis garbage. The character development is horrible, and the characters that we know and love aren't even the same characters anymore. Joel is killed off with no good reason, and his shear stupidity and innocence in this game is undeniable. In the original game he was smart and could smell a trap from a mile away. He was remorseless, and didn't trust people. In this game he walks into a trap, gives all his personal information, and then gets killed. UNBELIEVABLE. Not only that, but then they expect us to play as his murderer. This is by far the worst game Naughty Dog Has ever made. Expand

Great Graphics and an awesome Atmosphere. One of the strongest games I have ever played. The soundtrack was always placed at the right moments and is very beautiful too. The characters animations are very realistic. What‘s also realistic about the game is it‘s brutality. So there is a lot of blood and brutal scenes. Who can not handle with should may think about buying it. The story isGreat Graphics and an awesome Atmosphere. One of the strongest games I have ever played. Addressing the elephant in the room first: While there is not as much Joel as everyone would have liked, this is still primarily a Joel and Ellie story. The whole game/plot and everything that happens is because of Joel and his relationship with Ellie. Yes, Joel died early on in the game, however we got plenty of Joel and Ellie through flashbacks and the two of them had a fantastic story arch with a beginning, middle and end. I think anything more than what we got would have been redundant and overbearing. We did not need another ‘Joel and Ellie go on another adventure’ game. We got that with the first game. The story in this game in my opinion is a fluent, cohesive continuation of the first and if there was ever going to be a second game, I’m so glad this is the one we got.

Everyone seems so hung up on the fact that their favourite character dies early on, that they don’t appreciate that Joel’s absence is just as important to the story, if not more than when he was there. And he and Ellie had their own fully fledged story and character arcs.

Beautiful game. My only gripe is the pacing. So many times I thought the chapters could have been condensed as they felt really stretched out and I think the game could have benefitted from being shorter.

Soundtrack was beautiful and in my opinion better than the first. Loved Abby’s character and towards the end of the game , I liked her more than Ellie.

This is one of the rare times that a sequel has succeeded my expectations and improved on the first in every aspect: gameplay, graphics, animation, sound design, acting, characters, story and soundtrack. It’s a game that will stick with me for years and years to come. It’s been close to a week since I completed the game and it’s still the only thing on my mind.

Ok bro first u kill of damn joel, just like that, nothing honorable in that, I get it but how are you just going to kill a main character just like that, how u kill him, and afterwards tbh with you it started getting better, I though it was a 8/10, at least I thought, TILL I STARTED PLAYING AS ABBY, which I thought was maybe a 15 minute flashback but nooooooo A WHOLE HALF OF THE GAME WITH HER HELL NO! you think I want to play as Joel’s killer, THENNNN OHHH NO U MAKE ME PLAY AS HER AND FIGHT ELLIE OH HELL NO! THATS WHAT PISSED ME OFF! U think I want to control her and try to kill Ellie, I was rooting for Ellie the whole time, then Jesse, bam just like that. Then the whole time skip, what the hell was that. WHY SUCH A HUGE TIME SKIP AND FOR WHAT! UGHHH THIS GAME IS SO MESSED UP STORY WISE, at this point I’m considering this not even as cannon, it never happened. Let me know when they have last of us part 2 coming out, not a terrible fan made game by a 12 year old. I give it a 3 instead of a 0 for the gameplay and graphics WHICH ARE AMAZING and actually fun BUT, otherwise story wise UGH! Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
