Its clear to me a lot of talent went in to making this. The visuals and animations are top notch. The voice acting and sound design is great. This is where the game earned its 3 points for me. But the gameplay is forgettable at best. Still none of those elements are the reason you play Last of Us. You play, for better or worse, for the story. I think all those elements would have been better served by watching a collection of the cinematics, which you could experience for free on Youtube. I do not see any value in playing this game.

So what do I think of the story? The story is a collection of plot devices loosely tied together with poorly written dialogue from mostly new unlikable characters. All the while making previously established likable characters into unlikable characters. The plot points, though controversial, aren't the problem. Its the execution. Its everything in between. Thinking back on the first game the only really interesting plot point comes at the end with Joel deciding to save Ellie. The rest of the game is just a road trip and a cure for the zombie apocalypse. Nothing particularly exciting or groundbreaking by itself. Its the moments in between -the character interactions- that makes the Last of Us 1's story so great. And those little moments fail here. This fails at the most critical level where the first game succeeded.

My recommendation? Don't be like me. Don't waste the 60 dollars. Watch it on Youtube for free and be disappointed for free.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm baffled by the review bombing of this game. Even if one does not like the story, and I do have a few gripes with that compared to TLOU 1, this still is top-notch graphics, great gameplay, and sound.

I absolutely loved the first game, which is my favorite game ever, and technically this is far superior. Where this does have some issues for me is with the story. I felt a serious gut punch when Joel died, but it makes sense to me in this world that he had it coming. Even if we know him as a protective father figure, to a lot of other people he's a mad killer. I disliked the pacing of the game, the Abby parts felt a bit too contrived and long, but overall still resonated with me for the most part.

Hating this game for having a tiny bit of LGBT content seems crazy, just like hating it for killing off a loved character seems weird to me, hating the story is fair, but hating everything else about the game makes no sense to me. This is not as good as the first game but it's still a great experience with great gameplay, even if the pacing is a bit off.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Part II was a beautiful game, and well done. The graphics were definitely impressive, and the imagination that went into the development of the scenery and the world building was top-notch. Gameplay improved from the first one (Part 1 was a 10 for me, although it's gameplay mechanics could be repetitive at times), but I dropped this sequel down two points simply for the story. It wasn't horrible, by any means, like so many of the leaks and distressed "fans" of Naughty Dog have been saying. It still sucked me into the world, and I cared about the characters, some of which met terrible ends (and rightfully so, in a cruel world, zombie apocalypse story). But the new game, while impressive and absolutely incredible in some ways, missed out on some of the originality, and the human connection between Joel and Ellie (and other characters), that made it hard to live up to the first. For me personally, I hold story over gameplay, so while this one improved in those areas, it got a slightly lower rating because the story wasn't QUITE as magical as the first. But I wasn't expecting it to be. That's a hard ask of any sequel of a 10 star masterpiece. But they were close, and improved in many ways, and continued to invest their heart into the making of this game, like they had in the first. Bravo, Naughty Dog. I ignored all the negative hype, and truly enjoyed the game. It even tug at my heartstrings a few times.

Additionally, and not that I care much, but it's worth mentioning for those considering to play: the zero (0) through five (5) review scores seem ridiculous to me, considering the work and execution of this game. I could see emotions dropping the scores quite a bit, maybe as low as 6 or 7 if your feelings were really hurt, or it just didn't "do it" for you. This game is no 3. But to each their own. If you haven't played it yet, I suggest you do. It's certainly not the first game, but it is outstanding none-the-less in it's own right. The few friends I have who also played couldn't even talk about it for a few days after we finished the game. That sort of impact and shock is hard to obtain in a video game, and Naughty Dog did it. Afterward, we talked about how immersive it was, and how shocking some of the moments were, even with some of the "leaks" and spoilers that had tried to ruin it for us. Ignore the negative hype and give it a shot. Or don't. But if you skip this one, you're missing out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A middle of the road score for a middle of the road movie masquerading itself as a game. I swear that after a battle between Ellie and the main antagonist, there was a 20+ minute cinematic of Ellie in her new life with only little bits of walking around to "herd the goats" or, having killed a rabbit (in the scene) walking back to the farm where she lives. That was the only control you had.

The graphics and music score are amazing and if the game play lived up to them, it would easily be a 10/10. But they don't. And it isn't.

I care about Ellie and Joel. I spent 15+ hours with them in the first game and wanted to see how things progressed with them again and Naughty Dog had a great opportunity to do so. The story could so easily have been Ellie finding out what Joel did at the end of the first game, running off and Joel chasing after her to bring her home. Cutting between the two characters alternately for varied game play.

There became no chance of anything of the sort when Joel was killed but at that moment, I really, honestly and truthfully and wanted revenge against Abby, his murderer.

I don't care about Abby at all and, midway through the game, you are forced to play as her. I found myself deliberately throwing her off of high places or leaving her to the infected just to see her die. I also found myself playing JUST to finish the game and get my 100GB of hard disk space back.

All of the other characters are unmemorable and mostly unlikable as well. So I didn't. When they died (always scripted, no matter what you did) it meant nothing to me.

The thing that really got me was exactly how linear the game is. There is a point where Ellie is chasing one of the gang who killed Joel into some spores. This girl is dead either way. Either Ellie kills her or the spores get her and she turns. The problem is, you don't get that choice. All you can do is continually press a button to cave her skull in. I don't expect Mass Effect like choices in a Naughty Dog game but I'd hope to have some choice along the way.

So after all the hype, the misleading trailers and pre-purchase excitement, I can only give this "game" 5/10.

Maybe you guys wanted to make Joel’s death as painful as possible that you forgot it had to make sense. This is not Joel from The last of us 1, who spotted an ambush from miles away, this is a different Joel who gives his name, address and credit card number to a bunch of complete armed strangers. “We will do right by you” druckmann’s lies, replacing Joel in game trailers, and simply not succeeding in making us emphasize with she hulk, and more disrespectfully not even giving players the option to spare her at the end or not. The amount of stress I would have during encounters and scavenging was incredible, and it only made the gameplay more surreal with its polished mechanics further enhancing. It is by far, the most impressive thing gaming has been able to do. The team at Naughty Dog has not only set a far higher standard for themselves and other cinematic games but the entertainment industry as a whole. And although this game was emotionally tough for me, it's been something I have been trying to seek in videogames as of late. The last of us 2 tries to be a post apocalypse story that is diverse and different, however it feels forced and agenda pushing through nearly the entire story, while the game-play feels fluid and combat is more satisfying than the first game, the risk reward is just not there and ruins the game-play experience.

The story for the last of us 2 leaves you feeling as if the game was never finished, the ending is certainly there but it is a disappointment, in-fact alot of this game disappoints with trailers blatantly LYING about Joel's involvement in the game, some scenes are model switched such as flashbacks in the game being shown in the trailer as present old Joel and Ellie in the ads. Naughty dog/ Sony blatantly lied to people in the games advertising to sell more copies and in the final product there is very little present day interaction with Joel and Ellie.

Overall, The agenda pushing in this game mixed with the lying of Advertisements for this game ruin the experience for the Last of us fans, While the gameplay is definitely improved and voice acting is superb the story is a massive let down even for people who this game tries to pander to and bleak story lovers.

I normally would have given this game a 2 or 3 just for the game-play and voice acting alone but with the lies in advertisement and a story so bad that i believe the game should have been scraped and redone from the start story-wise along with agenda politics forced into our video games especially at a time like this when games are used to escape the real world, i had to take points away from what my normal score would have been. i sincerely hope this will be a lesson learned on naughty dogs part and their next games will be better in the future.

To the voice actors of this game, i congratulate you on doing an extremely well done job and i'm sorry i'm unable to give this game a higher score.

Game is freaking awesome, just finished it and I had to hold my tears, it starts as a revenge story and then becomes a redemption story a forgiveness story and how hard it is for the characters to let go, Joel’s death is pivotal in how the game develops, creates questions, who is Abby why did she killed him, how is Ellie gonna react why did Ellie and Joel not getting along now, does Ellie knows all the truth? And after the setup is complete and you are in a rampage killing scars and Wolfs you are presented with Abby story, which I compare with Raiden in MGS2 it forces you to look on the other side of the mirror, to get control of a character you hate and understand her motivations motivations is a great way to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, may say that her story is plain, I disagree, her story is an evolution of dogma and doctrine to free think and been able to make her own decisions and acceptance of someone who things oposite to you. Overall is a great experience and I believe that anyone without prejudices will enjoy this game Expand

I will say that I always thought the first game was completely overrated, so I went into this not expecting much. Man, the first game is a God's blessing compared to this.

The story has such terrible pacing problems that I cannot even believe that it's a reality. Most characters are uninteresting and underdeveloped, don't make logical decisions, and the plot armor is beyond acceptable.

You spend so much of the game doing very little and making little progress that by the end it felt like a waste of time.

The gameplay felt marginally improved, but still lacks any meaningful new mechanics. Proning and dodging are nice, but I wanted Ellie to feel faster and more agile, but she controls very similarly to Joel who felt more like a Tank. The gameplay personally got boring and repetitive by the halfway point.

Anyway, the complements can be for the graphics, audio, animations, etc. However I can't say crunching people with overtime was worth the end product. The visual fidelity and audio quality wasn't worth the human cost, and it wasn't worth losing my sanity over.

Those mainstream reviewers that gave this a 10/10 should be ashamed. Stop promoting these terrible games as some sort of amazing standard that should be followed. Just because millions upon millions of dollars were invested doesn't mean that the product is any good.

I can't recommend the game even if you got it for free. Avoid it.

Those accessibility options are top tier though :p

The story isn't for the easily offended, but I enjoyed it despite the dishonest and politically-motivated discourse surrounding it. True fans of the first game will enjoy it too. That being said, if you're a casual who hasn't played the original, save your money. The only critique I have regarding the story is that it's extremely long which not everybody has the patience for.

Overall you should play the game for yourself and form your own opinion on it rather than listening to sheep who've never even picked up a copy of the first game.

This game is more than worth the hours you'll invest. TLOU2 continues the story so carefully laid out in the first installment. We see Ellie grown, Joel weathered, and society beginning to plant new roots in a post-apocalyptic world. Joel's past and his choices from the first game catch up to him, and he confronts the consequences. Ellie struggles to accept those choices while trying to sort out who she is, and who she wants to be. This is a story about loss, regret, and acceptance; crafted exceptionally well by the medium's most innovative world-builders.

It's not surprising that in today's political environment, this game has been so divisive. This is not the game's fault; it is ours. As I see it, the criticism of this game breaks down into two factors. 1) It's plot choices; 2) a single character: Abby.

Not liking some of the plot choices is perhaps the most honest critique one can make about this game, although still unwarranted IMO. I've heard arguments about Joel's fate being out-of-character, and that the "real" Joel would never allow what happened to take place. These arguments overlook the fact that this is not the same Joel from the first game. Years have passed, and Joel has regained something he thought was lost forever. Something to protect, and a reason to make the world a better place. At this point in his life, it's clear that he's reconciled much of his baggage from the first game and has invested in building a future for himself and those he loves. His choices, and how he approaches life in general, are of course going to change. I've also heard some strange critique about how unreasonable and unrealistic it is that finding a vaccine for the game's underlying world threat (the cordyceps infection) would require a human sacrifice, and how anyone who would allow for said sacrifice is irredeemable. This is wrong. 1) This isn't a virus; it's a parasitic fungal infection, so there's no reason to believe finding a vaccine would work the same way as our real world. The game establishes why securing a sample to develop a vaccine would be fatal. 2) This is a fictional story involving a post-apocalyptic future where humans are struggling to survive against fungal zombies. We're meant to suspend our disbelief.

The second line of criticism is the most troubling to me. Some people just hate Abby, and especially hate that this game attempts to make the player empathize with her. They also hate the so-called "wokeness" of her character and in general the game, by it addressing some LGBTQ issues during her part of the story. Putting this criticism into context, I think it's clear that those who have a problem with Abby are two things: 1) Unwilling to see the world as anything other than black and white, us vs them. 2) Resentful that this fantasy world they want to escape into doesn't reflect the world they actually want... namely one in which LGBTQ people and the challenges they contend with everyday do not exist, men are "purely" men and women are "purely" women. They leave no room for a spectrum of gender roles or identities. They hate Abby's muscles, they ridicule the game's story for merely including gender issues (which aren't even relevant to the overarching themes of the story), and they roll their eyes at Dina and Ellie's burgeoning relationship. None of these inclusions are forced into this story, and happen as naturally as they do in real life. But these particular critics just simply do not want these values in their games, and I can't help but feel like ultimately the reason for this is because they do not want them in their real life. It's sad, but also unsurprising.

In the end, the reason to love this game is precisely because of how it balances a make-believe world with the very real human relationships and complications we face in the actual one. It will go down as a historic contribution to the medium.

However, I feel almost as if those who boycott the game missed the point. We are all insignificant at the end of the day, and that is why Joel’s death hurt so much. Because we got to know him so intimately, his death hurt so much more. His end was not fitting, but in the world of TLOU, I don’t think anyone realistically expects their death to be that way. Death is both monumental and trivial in this world and this juxtaposition makes for some incredibly moving moments. This was a heart wrenching, haunting, and painfully real narrative that is ultimately more concerned with forgiveness than revenge. It is a visually stunning, emotionally engaging, and brilliantly written work of art. Expand

This game is a masterpiece, which plays with the idea of villain and hero, the indignation at the death of Joel and having to play with Abby is unfounded, she is not a villain, and the game clearly demonstrates that Ellie herself, is more villainous than Abby. Both were caught in a cycle of revenge, Abby for Joel killing his father, and Ellie for Abby killing Joel, practically his father too, and in return Ellie killed everyone Abby loves, while when Abby had the opportunity to repeat the act, she was pious, and spared the lives of the innocent. Abby is definitely the hero of the game! Expand

The graphics and the audio are definitely on of the best we can find in the PS4. The game is pretty fun and even though the jump button didn’t add much to the game, being able to crawl and dodge does make the game play way more fun than the previous one IMO.

The combats are great and the clickers and stalkers will definitely scare the **** out of you.

The story itself is not bad and the game does give you that rollercoaster of emotions. By the end I could sympathize with Abby and I actually had a lot of fun paying with her. It was a really nice experience being able to play against Tommy and Ellie. I actually admired them more since I faced them as enemies. Their are really tough to beat.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright, let’s see what was the problem here. The gameplay is great. It’s one of the last PS4 games due to the coming of the PS5 by the end of the year. I understand people being upset with this game. I myself got really upset at some points but definitely it doesn’t deserve a 0, 1, 2 as a score nor a 10 or a 9. This game sold fans that we were having a new adventure with the duo we all love Ellie & Joel. A lot of us played the first game long time ago therefore it was exciting to think of it. But somehow and that is totally comprehensive the writers decided to go other way. Joel the protagonist of the first game gets killed in a gruesome way at a few hours of just start playing. Later the attitude of Ellie is rude with the people that care about her. I loved this character Dina she was great but the attitude of Ellie wasn’t the best towards her. So later after some hours of play through the game switches to Abby... this character which is responsable of the death of Joel. I felt that this was done with the intention of emphasizing with Abby but she just killed a character we all loved. At this time we don’t care what could she have done. But the game makes you play as her for a long time. This could have been a great adventure killing Joel was unnecessary if you ask me but if the writers wanna do it that way it’s fine I just think that the could have take it totally different maybe the story of Ellie and Dina that happens due to other circumstances...
The story is really dramatic and depressing to be honest. Ellie loses everything at the end and Abby doesn’t lose anything. Ellie loses two of her fingers, Jessie, Tommy, Dina & Joel... and man when the credits rolled I felt really, really sad. I didn’t want an end like that... I rate this game a 7 because it has good gameplay and at the end I guess It fulfilled its purpose which was make me sad... I cried. Those flashbacks with Joel just broke my heart. So I guess that was an intention. But making us play as Abby... I felt it offensive and unnecessary

I believe this game is amazing graphically. I felt like a horrible person playing this game and I think that is the beauty of this game, it made me feel many kinds of ways, including ways I never felt before playing a game.

The story is not what I expected but I went into the ride the creators presented to us and I think it made sense at the end. I wish I had played a different story but that doesn't change that this revenge story was bad, it was really great in my opinion.

Things that would have made it a 10 for me.

Maybe changing the pacing. I was too impatient to get to the theatre when I was playing as Abby, which made me enjoying Abbys part a bit less, or not pay so much attention to her point of view because I was more interested in what would happen after.

The combat system became a bit tedious before the end, I would have been happy with a slightly shorter game.

I have read some reviews and realized that people are really angry at the misleading trailers of the game. I totally sympathize with those people. I believe is not ethically right to mislead the audience, you either don't present any trailer or present a faithful one. I always stay away from trailers as much as possible, so I cant get angry for that, but please stop this kind of behaviour in the media industry, misleading is not an honest way to subvert expectations.

I think the first thing to know about this game is that it has the capacity to be great, and to be horrible. I was a huge fan of the first game, and *full disclosure I am also socially leaning conservative based on the current American scale of politics. So I didn’t care for that much of the themes of social justice embedded in the game. To me, these things were easy to look past. All it really is trying to say is to treat people like human beings and that’s a fair thing to ask. I think if you look past the political things, the Last of Us Part II is a hugely emotionally compelling game. If you think about it, a game that generates so much love and hate wouldn’t be at least somewhat interesting if it didn’t have something to love or to hate. The Last of Us Part I left me in tears because of the intricate and masterful presentation of the relationship between Joel and Ellie. Part II to me strives on something different. It thrives on a journey of solace, portrays a path of blindness. If you are confused about that statement, I would compare the journey of this game to the story in Dante’s “The Divine Comedy.” It’s just filled more with emotion. I was forced by the games narrative to do things I didn’t want to do, which worked on me but might not have with others, but is nonetheless a predisposition you must acquire before confronted with the ending. A good video game to me is like a good book. It’s something that strikes a little bit different every time you visit it. It would constantly lure you in short moments of longing and emotions. For this one, it is an overwhelming sense of loneliness. And if you take the time to play the game and look in its details, just as you take the time to look at the language and syntax used in a good book, there are moments of joy, horror, chaos, tranquility for you to enjoy. The Last of Us Part II ended for me the same way a powerful movie did: it made me reflect on the journey and my own life.

If you ask me why people hate it, it’s because of the plot. There are certain things such as the sequencing of the narrative and plot points people detested, understandably. I would say that to play this game with the right mentality requires you to think outside of the game for a second about why the developers and writers chose that path. I know it’s not your job to do that as a player, but if you do, the reward would be much greater than the anger you might receive when you don’t. There were things in the first game that made me feel uncomfortable too, such as *spoiler the death of Tess *end spoiler. But that was nothing compared to the shock things in this game caused people, and I think for many the shock is just the straw that broke the camels back which is funny because there really wasn’t many straws as far as I could tell due to the high expectations for this game. Perhaps because The Last of Us Part I was such an unexpected masterpiece that without expectations people enjoyed it immensely, but this new game didn’t surpass the expectation set up by the first game by all that much. If you’ve played the first game, then you’d know this already, don’t go into the game with expectations, especially expectations for an happy ending. Ultimately, is the game worth your money. I’d say yes. If you liked it then you’d probably say in hindsight that you’d pay $120 for the game if they set it there. If you didn’t, then at least you’d get a certain satisfaction of complaining about it in the forums. But I’d say if you play it the right way with minimal expectations, you will get a decent amount guaranteed out of it.

The mentality I referred to can be understood as what George R.R. Martin said in terms of what fantasy has the capacity to do. For those of you who are not GOT fans, don’t worry, this is just a general quote.

“We read fantasy to find the colors again, I think. To taste strong spices and hear the songs the sirens sang. There is something old and true that speaks to something deep within us, to the child who dreamt that one day he would hunt the forests of the night, and feast beneath the hollow hills, and find a love to last forever something south of Oz and north of Shangri-La.

They can keep their heaven. When I die, I’d sooner go to middle earth.”

Works of fantasy only works if the reader or player holds nothing back and just go along with the experience. When people approach it with a critic’s eye, they’d lose sight on the magic of fantasy. Go your own path, live your own life, draw your own conclusions.

Here is one last quote I pulled from “The Divine Comedy.” You’d find it hits a bit differently once you finish your journey the same way I did.

“Lost are we, and are only far punished, that without hope we live on in desire.” - Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy.

Its a masterpiece. Felt like watching The Heat - where the story tells the perspective of the villain as well. Shame it got bombed by snowflakes

Abby's personality may have had a huge influence from joels actions so you have to take that in mind, and you cant just be blindly in love with your main characters of before because these have flaws also, like ellies relentless path of revenge contrary to her desire to have been used for the best for humanity, joel was selfish in a way too, saving a life you care implies sacrificing many others in this case (gray choice of a gray character also), talking about ellie humanity and the struggles of PTSD was great, game also shows the complexity of human minds when taking rash choices as when they decide to let each other live, as they somehow learn the value of life, and try to redeem thwmselves, whicj was the sanest choice imo. my point is the main characters are just as gray as anybody else , not black or white not bad or good, the emotional impact of the final battle beetween them got me greatly, taking that all in mind. There are plenty of people who have legit concerns about this game but the people rating below like a 6 or 7 are being reactionary.

The story is controversial but literally everything else is top notch. If you're on the fence, I say give it a shot. Even if you end up not liking it. You will probably not regret knowing for sure.

In my opinion, The Last of Us 2 is a great video game and a masterpiece of storytelling, it really takes the narrative power of gaming to a new level. The Last of Us 2 is easily one of the best looking game and the actors have done some incredible work. This game is more ambitious narratively than anything else I've played. Congratulation to Naughty Dog, great job.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
