Absolute garbage compared to the hype presented by the critics. This game will be forgotten in a year. Naughty dog chooses political agendas over its fanbase. Not to mention Sony angering half the internet with its copyright nonsense that went on. Clearly after playing this it wasn't worth it.

So, I was super excited for The Last of Us Part 2. My excitement was through the roof, I couldn't believe it, I finally got to play the game after avoiding spoilers like crazy because the game got leaked. My excitement quickly disappeared after playing just a couple of hours. There were many cringe-worthy dialogues to the point I would physically cringe my face and say ugh out loud. There was a massive event that occurred within the first two hours. I was absolutely devastated. I did not want to play this game anymore but I spent $60, so I kept playing. The game takes you on 10 hours long side quest with new characters, and they were very unlikable and uninteresting. I pushed through, finished the game, hoping the ending will pay off all of the time I put into this game. Unfortunately, it didn't. The ending was just.... unsatisfying. This game does not feel like a sequel to the first game, instead, it felt like Naughty Dog and Co created a new universe that had some characters from the first game who had a cameo in the new game just to please the fans. There are no words I can use to describe how I felt after completing the game. I'm just sad I waited for 7 years for this game, only to see the story line make almost no sense, there are so many plot holes, so many characters that can't be related. I do not recommend spending $60 and about 16-20 hours of your lifetime into this game. It also didn't help seeing so many great reviews which raised my expectations. I wonder if the critics played a different game than us? I dunno man. :( Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is an insult to the masterpiece that is the first game. The idea of Joel dying was something I figured would happen in the sequel since it is necessary to close his character arc imo. However, Naughtydog executed it very very poorly. The ending is very anticlimactic and makes no sense and straight up pisses on the first game. The brilliant people that worked on this game such as Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey did not deserve their characters to be treated this poorly. The gameplay, graphics and acting are even better than in the first game, but the story is written by an analphabetic sloth called Neil Druckman who should never be allowed to write another work of fiction ever again. Druckman should go straight back to writing academy together with Dave and Dan from Game of Thrones.

    TLDR: Gamplay 10/10. Graphics 10/10. Acting 10/10. Writing -30/10.

Petition to glue Neil Druckman to a tree and leave him there? I'll start one.

Expand

The gameplay is basically exactly the same as TLoU1, and really doesn't do anything to evolve from there other than having better animations, there's nothing really new beyond dogs, and a few new animations, not that that is entirely a bad thing, TLoU1 had really fun gameplay, but I was hoping for some innovation, and honestly the gameplay is one of the only two saving graces in this game.

The one thing I could say that I absolutely loved about this game is the scenery/graphics. This is hands down one of the the most beautiful games on PS4, right up there with Horizon Zero Dawn. The world feels natural, like nature is reclaiming the world in a slightly comforting way, and if it wasn't for all the murdering and zombies, It's a world I would love to be in myself.

And that is about the only good I can say about this game. The story. Good lord the story. I read the spoilers before I played it, so I knew what was going to happen, and that didn't bother me too much.. but the game itself is actually WORSE than the spoilers let me to believe. I want this to be a spoiler free review so I won't go into detail, but "that" scene happens much earlier than I thought, the plot seems stupid so far, and the characters aren't acting even remotely like they did in TLoU1, it's like they're not even the same people.

I'm just sorry, I knew this game was gonna be bad, I bought it anyway to give it a try.. I'm returning it tomorrow for a refund.. Another god-tier IP ruined by identity politics.

I'm only giving it a 3 because goddamn is it pretty, and the combat isn't horrible.

Let me break this down for you quickly: PANDERING has negatively infected gaming culture and the Last of Us 2 is the quintessential example of it

Before we get into game-play, story, sound design and overall fun of the game; we need to have serious discussion on what pandering is and how it effects culture negatively. Pandering is defined as doing things for an individual or group in order to gain a favor and advantage for yourself.

Every game, comic book, movie or music may contain some form of pandering, and in most cases it isn't a big deal. In modern culture, however, we have reached a point where pandering has become an issue, particularly when a medium appeals to a certain demographic without making any effort to understand the people they're supposedly representing.

It often feels like an afterthought, something thrown in to reap the benefits of including that group (typically a minority) without doing any actual work. Typically it's lazy representation at best, and at worst it can be actively harmful to the demographic being (mis)represented.

The Last of Us 2 is the latter.

I am a huge fan of the first game; but not in terms of the its game-play, graphics and sound design. The game's story, specifically its masterful pacing and development of the two main protagonists Ellie and Joel, is what draws players in (myself included) and captivates them throughout the entire journey. The writers knew what these two characters represent: Joel is a damaged, old and experienced man that has reluctantly partnered with an energetic, young and naive Ellie in order to potentially save humanity from a deadly virus. The game has a beautiful thematic narrative on society and human-beings; Ellie represents humanity's hope for the future (the literal cure for the virus), and thus needs to be protected by the battle-hardened adults, which is where Joel steps in (both story-wise and in game-play). Both characters grow and start depend on each other, and the game ends with an ambiguous question of whether this father/daughter relationship has either doomed or saved humanity.

The Last of Us 2 has this beautiful theme and relationship dynamic completely thrown out of the window in order for the writers to pander Ellie as a strong female LGBT lead. All the charm and charisma she had in the first game is completely gone as Ellie has been reduced to being part of a, as writer Neil Druckmann puts it.... "diverse cast of strong female characters".

Being female and gay does not make Ellie a strong character.

Being deadly and proficient in killing does not make Ellie a strong character.

Having a tortured past and being an emotionally distant does not make Ellie a strong character.

In fact, being the potential cure to save humanity, also did not make Ellie a strong character either. She became a strong lead because of how her actions dynamically affected those around her, specifically Joel and his group. In this bleak future, Ellie is the Last bit of humanity (of Us, if you will) in a literal sense but also in an emotionally resonant way for all of us.

In an effort to pander to certain demographics, the story takes a complete thematic nose-dive to have so-called representation of minorities surviving in an apocalyptic wasteland. Ellie, our future for humanity, is now comically emotional for wanting vengeance to the point of absurdity for the death of a close friend. None of her witty lines, or virus-curing antiques is needed here. All the Last of Us 2 seems to concern itself with, is how violence is violent for violent characters because a violent world needs violent people to justify the violence.

And who better to justify this game's theme than humanity's last hope for the future... who's a lesbian.

Pandering with no thought of the narrative pedigree that the first game had, has a sure way of alienating audiences and it does not make for a great gaming experience; especially when the first-game to this day is a herald for refined video game story-telling.

In my humble opinion, Naughty Dog Studio have never been the creators of original game-play and stories, however, they have always been prime examples of expertly "refined" experiences. Uncharted/Crash Bandicoot and even the Last of Us were not pioneer games; but they were amazingly refined platformer/survival games to the point that it gave the illusion that they were.

The graphics and sound design of the Last of Us 2 is worth praise as enemies converse realistically and move dynamically through the environment, a touch of the naughty dog refinement that is muddied unfortunately by the bog-standard run-of-the-mill 3rd-person action game-play.

However the sound, game-play and the game's overall fun factor is connected to the story Naughty Dog has written, thus it suffers immensely for it. 1/10

Wait until they start trying to censor the users because they don't agree with the critics. It's bad. No, it has nothing to do with certain "scenes" (keep your whining to yourself). It has to do with the story and an effort to be made to actually censor those that don't agree with what they're apparently supposed to think. It's simply bad. Deal with it.

The gameplay is incredible, the mechanics of the game are very much enjoyed, also its graphics are spectacular, however The Last of Us 2 failed in the main, the story, I loved the beginning, but the fact of killing Joel unnecessarily is not cool, and to end the lousy end, so that you launch yourself into a death crusade if in the end you will end up sparing the life of your mentor's murderer, the truth expected much from this game, but honestly I repeat that it failed in the most important thing, history . Last of us 1 was my favorite game, truly a master piece. After waiting 7 years I have never been more disappointed in my gaming life. Game has terrible pacing, characterization & story telling. Gameplay remains almost identical to the first game w/ no major changes. Your better off just watching a let’s play and saving $60. Two hours into the game I didn’t even want to play anymore. This review is really quick because all I’ll say is that the game was great. It’s really expanded the story of the previous game. This post is made for those reviews bombing the game and just to let you know that what your doing is completely useless and a waste of time on every ones part and that your using it to justify bigotry and hate. Don’t lie you know it’s true.

This is a game that every PlayStation owner/fan have to experience for themselves.

P.S. I saw some reviews that say that the game is more like a movie, this game is heavily told through story, if you don't want story, which is what The Last Of Us focuses on and is about, then don't play it.

    SPOILERS:
    (SPOILERS AHEAD, LAST CHANCE)

Joel is killed and people are mad. They leave bad reviews on the game, because they don't like story progression. He is killed to progress the story. This is a very heartfelt and emotional moment that was well-acted and made.
The plot is about revenge, justice, and hate. This fits well with it's story, world, and characters.
The game is very detailed like, you ride on your horse over a stream and your horse breaks the ice.
Game Mechanics are very detailed, thought-through, and well-made. You can now dodge, prone, hide in tall grass to avoid being detected, break windows, climb and jump using a rope, etc. These mechanics make TLOU2 feel like a whole new game rather than a sequel.

TL:DR - The Last of Us 2 soars high with absolute beautiful fidelity while simultaneously falling far from grace with poor story writing and structure and coupled with dated gameplay mechanics.

Graphics: TLOU's greatest strength is its visuals. Stunning, vibrant detail can be seen through most of the game, only lacking occasionally on a few character models and background foliage. It is almost impossible not to get lost in a gaze with every cutscene. The environment does an excellent job capturing the feel of an apocalyptic world.

Story: Unfortunately for TLOU2, it doesn't even hold a candle to its predecessor. Where the TLOU1 was focused on a powerful, well driven story about the zombie apocalypse, TLOU2 steers clear of that in favor of a forced revenge plot. Character development is strong in some places while completely failing to address it in others. The story itself bounces constantly between uninteresting characters and different points in time, creating a jarring, predictable, and disappointing storytelling experience.

Gameplay: TLOU2 doesn't stray too far from the TLOU formula. Though some additions were made, everything about the game feels comfortably familiar, yet boring in most cases.

Audio: Another aspect that seems to be equally comparable to the first in the series. Sound effects do their job, but don't bring anything to the table as far as robust or immersive.

    Final Score: 3/10

Sidenote: There is absolutely nothing in my review in regards to the controversy. This is as unbiased a review as it can get. Astounding graphics and a brand name from a company are not enough to carry a game to success. The original The Last of Us was predominantly successful due to its phenomenal story, which is completely mismanaged here. One could argue that a game does not need a good story, but then all you're left with is generic and obsolete gameplay that cannot hold this world up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While I can't see myself giving this game a perfect score (no one is perfect!), it definitely is one of the most necessary games that everyone should play. It has stunning graphics, and anyone who played the first game will be pleased to know not much of the gameplay has changed. The biggest draw I felt was the progressive theme that really had a lasting impact on me. White men were mostly done away with in the story, with strong female leads taking the reins. This game is also a landmark in achievement; featuring what I believe is the first transgender love scene in gaming history. The game is a milestone in dark storytelling, where you shouldn't expect to be happy with your circumstances at any point in the game. In fact, by the end, I was wondering just what kind of emotional pain the developers were intending to inflict upon me by the end of the long path of depression. If you want an incredibly inclusive narrative that puts bigots right where they belong, check this game out! Hopefully the next installment in the series will feature even more the the same scenery, gameplay, and progressive values that any non-judgmental person can enjoy! Expand

First and foremost - this game is not the continuation of Last of Us story. This is nothing but a fan-fiction. Amateurish, vain, talentless, perverted. It is as bad, as latest Terminator movie.

First and foremost - this game is not the continuation of Last of Us story. This is nothing but a fan-fiction. Amateurish, vain, talentless, perverted. It is as bad, as latest Terminator movie.

The story is based only on a revenge. There is no character development, no emotional connection. Remember how long it took Ellie to build a relationship with Joel in first game? How long it took Joel to overcome the loss of his daughter, and to adopt Ellie? Well screw you! Now there is girl, you kissed the day before the game starts, the next day you’re making out and all in love. Also, authors use this logic for the whole game - here we take something away from, and you should be angry. This is a stupid 80s action movie, but not fun at all.

Gameplay is literally the same as original Last of Us. No new mechanics, no unique encounters, you either slowly walk and loot, or run and shoot. Looting is boring - you can only interact with 1 or 2 objects on scene. Shooting has no feedback at all. You don’t feel satisfied after you’ve managed to make a good shot. And don’t even mention stealth - I thought in 2020 players deserve something more interesting than basic arenas with covers and objects throwing.

What about famous animations? Have anyone seen any? Choppy, sluggish and absolutely unimpressive. RDR 2 feels more alive than these puppets.

Visuals are impressive. Impressive how bad they look. RDR2 looked MUCH better than this blurred mess. The very first scene of the game shows you a town, where dozens of people with only 4 different faces and clothes! And it is not action based scene like in a first game, where you don’t have time to notice this - no, you walk slowly and notice everything.

This garbage deserves nothing but a zero, and I really want writers of this game, those who actually made decision, to understand what an abomination they’ve created, and never do this crap again.
