It is pretty sad to me that the game is being review bombed because the heroes aren't male and there are so many different types of people in the game. Sad white boys crying sad white boy tears don't make for realistic review numbers. Honestly, I would give the game 9/10 but am tossing the 1 extra point on there to try to offset all the negative reviews. Expand

I honestly can't trust any critic giving this a 100 score because this is not a perfect game in any way. I personally don't think any game can truly be given a 100 score because there is always room for improvement. I did love the visuals of this game, it was beautiful and I think it is a stunning game to play. The game play has improved but does get a little repetitive over time. I also think the upgrading of weapons was made too long a process in this and was tedious to sit through over and over again.

The story itself isn't the best and is a little too on the nose at time as they try to shove the point down your throat, rather than letting the gamer get to the conclusions they want them to by themselves. I feel they might have been able to up the score of this game to a 6/7 if they had did a better job with the games timeline. Some of the choices they made confused me quite a lot. This would have worked better if they had chopped and changed the timeline. Overall I didn't love the story, I felt the pacing was off as you played due to decisions they made, the ending (whilst it left me an emotional, crying mess) was bitterly disappointing and left me feeling numb about the whole thing. You can kind of see what they were going for but it didn't land at all given the decisions they made of when characters would be introduced. At about the 50% mark you reach a point where you are suddenly just trying to get through a part of the game, not really caring or paying attention to what is going on as you work to get back to a part you care even 2% about. Just overall not a game I can say I enjoyed playing.

Despite all the hate and negative feedback that the game has received, I actually think The Last of Us Part 2 has a strong story. Not necessarily narrated in a way I wanted it to be, but nonetheless a strong story. I would have hoped for a happier ending or at least one less sad, but honestly it fits the overall dark context.

I also get the idea behind the being Abbey part but I believe this could have been better scripted; possibly by putting her story at the beginning of the game. It took me actually quite a while to accept her character emotionally after what she had done to Joel. The part I liked the least were the Ellie flashbacks particularly the one in the dinosaur museum. These were just boring and really interrupted the flow of the game negatively. Also the scavenger hunting was a bit too much for my taste.

Is it a great game? Technically definitely a masterpiece with a strong but extremely grim story that leaves you with a sad feeling at the end of the game. While this is not necessarily what I look for in a computer game, I (artistically) accept it as it is. Where the game fell short for me was the storytelling as it could have been much better executed. I also would have preferred more combat and less scavenger hunts.
But overall still one of the best games I have played and I definitely do not regret buying or playing it. Let's hope that some of the loose ends will be picked up in Part 3.

    What I liked:
Graphics: For me visually the best PS4 game so far. Whether it is the environment, the characters, or the cut scenes, everything looks just breathtaking. I have never seen such an amount of detail in a PS4 game. Everything moves and looks so realistically. (10 out of 10)

Audio: The sound of the game is spectacular and the voice acting top notch. I think Naughty Dog could have used a bit more background music, but definitely some of the best audio in a video game (9 out of 10)

Performance: I have never seen a game that looks and sounds so great and yet has zero performance issues. In my 30+ hours of play-through I cannot remember a single moment where the game was stuck, had a visual frame rate drop, or other performance issues. For the level of detail and motion in the environment as well as characters an absolutely outstanding achievement. (10 out of 10)

Controls: More or less the same controls as the original Last of Us which are very intuitive, easy to master and fun. Nothing to complain about here (10 out of 10)

    What I did not like:
Gameplay: Nearly the same gameplay as the original Last Of Us with some slight improvements which I liked. But in comparison to its predecessor there was less combat and more scavenger hunting which became often quite boring. While i focused for the most part of the first half of the game on finding all secrets, I stopped half-way through and just focused on finishing the story. (5 out of 10)

Replayability: I am currently not inclined to play it a second time but may eventually do so to get the Platinum trophy. I like the fact that the game offers the possibility to restart with all your achieved skills and collected weapons from the first play-through. (6 out of 10)

I started by hating playing with Abby and then all starts to make sense.
The more i liked Abby the more i disliked Ellie, to a point i didn't know which one i wanted to "win".
The end was perfect to me, i was really against Ellie killing Abby, and then they "saved" Ellie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I cannot comprehend so much hate for the sexuality matter. Of course, it could have been taken care of more properly, but still that doesn’t need to take away the characters value. Some of them are not so good, but some of them are really good and necessary.

It has some negative points for me, starting from very forced character appearances, and the chats with Ellie and her partners while playing, which seems as if nothing had happened to Joel.

This story lets us know that Ellie and Joel are not the only people who deserve something from the world, it shows us the cost and consequences of what their actions have caused in other people who as them, try to live and survive, defending what they care of. Even though Joel has been the most important character of TLOU, consequences fall upon him, and as painfully as it is to watch and feel, Joel’s ending is fair, because everybody knows that Joel’s would have done the same in a similar scenario.

Abby is the harmful truth that shows us that most of the people we kill in combat are just defending what they care of, that every person we kill had a story, a dream, a family, something humanly relevant to life’s importance. I am not saying there aren’t bad or good people, I’m just saying this game makes us conscious of a world we never see in most of the industry, the other side of things. Showing us how much we didn’t care before and even celebrate when our character has done something horrible, because we didn’t know any backgrounds.

There is a point in the game you start slightly hating Ellie’s actions, who at first had all your support. And it’s normal because they showed us the damage we have done. But still Ellie is heavily impulsive and leads to behaviors that make her look like the Joel with that open wound, with that ferocity, and that relentless way of killing.

In the great ending, Ellie’s not mercy but realizing that forgiving Abby’s life, may in a way
mean finishing to forgive Joel, accepting her actions as the same way as Joel’s.

This game in technical matters it’s perfect. The visuals, soundtrack, and sound are excellently handled. The playability is just something else, being perfectly build and fluid through all the game.

This game is getting hate in the wrong way like people are homophobic or transphobic and also people just hate the game because a main character is dead that is for some a reason a "hero" even though joel isn't a hero he's just a character that is very well developed that makes us like him but as for his selfish choices he saved ellie but then killed a lot of other people that have done a virus so that doesn't make him hero, now for the gameplay and the story ok so for the gameplay the stealth has really improved and sound effects and the graphics have improved and i'm very happy about that that means they have works a lot obn this game also sthe combat areas make you feel that you are in a city and not in a combat just made to be there and also the combat in there is even scarier than in uncharted 4 the gameplay srsly improved from uncharted 4 it is even bettter than uncharted 4 ok now lets talk about the story so we have ellie, dina, jesse, abby, etc... The narrative in every cut scene is really good the only thing that bugs me is that the flashbacks were not in the right place like some were rushed some of them were supposed to be there, so the character developement is actually good except with yara and jordan they were the least developed best character in the game but the rest are good developed and best developed is lev, best character in the game that i've experienced with this game, so yeah some sections were too long like abby that section was too long, but overall this was a pretty good game i enjoyed the gameplay, i enjoyed the story so yes i didn't waste my money for it 8/10 btw shoutout to all the people who did the graphic and the sound design. metacritic is the worst app to put a review because you can barely see wth are you typing in your review it is the worst that i've seen .

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game doesn't deserve the 10's it is getting, nor does it deserve the 0-2's it is getting. First off, this game has to be the best looking game I have EVER played, along with having top tier animations and voice acting. No one can take away how visually appealing this game looks and how good it plays. Besides all these great things, there are many issues with this game that mostly come from the story and minor things that come from the gameplay. The gameplay was very fun as expected, but needed a little bit more variety due to the length of the game just to mix things up a little. So let's talk about the story... I can admit ND tried to create an interesting/compelling story which conveyed an important message, but in doing so they sadly fell on their face. Through trying to tell this story, you end up spending a lot of time with characters who you do not care about at all. I bought this game because I cared about Ellie and Joel and their relationship, not to play as new a character who I barely have a connection with. The harsh truth is we don't care about Abby and her backstory enough to play almost 12 hours with. The way I see it is, any story where you play the whole thing as either Ellie or Joel would have a much more enjoyable game to play. Expand

The game has a very good graphic and sound component. As for the plot, I think that the actions of all the characters are well explained and understandable, but as I said, the game came out very dark. If in the first part Ellie was the light at the end and we were sure that despite the ambiguous act of Joel, Ellie would live. Here at the end there remains only a sense of relax from the end of the game. Ellie in the first part was very smart and funny, and the harmony between her and Joel was the main asset of the game. And here she is only obsessed with revenge and there is no particular connection between partners. I think the storyline with Abby was too long and it was worth more to reveal the story of those two Scars. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is a beautifully heartbreaking journey about two sides of the same coin. Ellie, the first main protagonist, seeks revenge on the second main protagonist, Abby, who had already gotten her revenge and is looking for her own purpose afterwards.

Many people have dubbed this game as "poor writing", "pandering to an audience", and other negative remarks towards the story, but that really couldn't be further from the truth. The story challenges the viewer's perspective on good and evil, and has the player witness the chaos that follows an evil act unfold.

Gameplay is significantly improved upon the first entry in the series by adding dodging, jumping, MUCH smarter AI, firefights that include both infected and humans, stealth gameplay that rivals Metal Gear, and much more. Beautiful sprawling environments don't feel nearly as linear as they have in previous ND titles, and every detail, from the lighting coming through a broken window, to the wind blowing through foliage on a grassy path, feel as close to lifelike as they ever have been.

This is the defining experience of the Playstation 4, and a beautiful swan song to the 8th generation of consoles.

Punishing in many ways, no doubt. But it was absolutely thrilling. I finished it last night and it well deserves the praise it gets from critics. Literary essays could be written about this story and its characters. The way the game forced me to switch perspectives and view certain characters and moral viewpoints directly through the gameplay was unlike any game I've played. Many people hate this aspect. They hate that they're made to sympathize with the enemy. I get that feeling. It's uncomfortable, and a desire rises up to reject the game on those grounds. But if you can get passed that knee-jerk reaction, you will come to realize that the story is better for the controversial choices made.

Another complaint I've heard is that this is just a cliche story about revenge. But that's missing the nuance. This story is about perspective. It is about perspective within the context of revenge, and by focusing on perspective an entirely different story and gameplay experience is created, one in which the player, if taking an evenhanded view, is not entirely sure for whom they are rooting. Nobody in this story has the moral high ground. They're all damaged, and the damage done to them perpetuates a cycle. These characters are complex, both the protagonists and antagonists, and this game wants to us to experience their complexities in deep, unsettling ways—ways in which we as players might learn lessons to apply to the real world. But you have to see through your own expectations of the game to truly appreciate what the developers have done here.

I've read and seen video reviews from irate fans, and while I understand their perspective I couldn't disagree more with much of their gripes. This may not be the story that some wanted, but it is not a bad story by any stretch of the imagination. It is a natural evolution from the first game's story and themes, and it directly deals with the repercussions of the characters' actions. It makes perfect sense. Some fans argue that the characters do no act like they would in the first game and that this leads unjustifiably to the inciting incident that kicks things off. Thus the inciting incident doesn't ring true. I feel these fans are, again, missing the nuance, the nuance of the situation the characters find themselves in. These fans can't accept that our supposed heroes are capable of being forced into an untenable situation that could end badly. The world built in these games is not a world built for happy endings. Our heroes may not be the heroes we think they are from a certain perspective.

Then there's the LGBTQ representation. Yes, we have a lesbian couple. They kiss and cuddle. Is it over the top? pandering? Absolutely not. There is no agenda. The story just happens to have two women who fall for each other like any man and woman might. You know, like in real life. Their relationship is central to the story, but not on the basis of it being a lesbian relationship. Maybe two moments occur in the entire game that addresses bigotry. They're small aspects, and they're realistic and fleeting. The story moves on. But you know what? I shouldn't have to make excuses like saying that these moments are fleeting and thus not a big deal. Bigotry happens in real life. People experience it. Showing it in a game or depicting people who experience it shouldn't be an issue. Ever. I repeat, it's not an agenda. It's real life. There could be an argument that Naughty Dog played up the lesbian relationship in marketing. But that's not the game. Move on.

As for the gameplay, it's very recognizable to the first game. It's better in many ways with more variety, and it's very fluid. If you loved the first game's gameplay and didn't get tired of it then you'll love the gameplay here, even more so. As a player you are gently eased into learning skills as the game progresses. As things ramp up you never feel left behind, but gameplay remains intense. Intense is the best way to describe the combat. The music feeds into this feeling. It's very satisfying, but disturbing.

This game is much longer than the first. My campaign was around 40 hours. I explored as many nooks and crannies as possible (but still didn't find everything) and really took in the beautiful scenery. The graphics are jaw-dropping. I will admit that at some points there was some repetitiveness. Scavenging can get a little old, especially toward the end. But the detailed environments always make exploration fun. The combat and stealth components and level designs allow for a variety of ways to approach every situation. I played it on the default difficulty and died a few times here and there. I imagine on harder difficulty levels that precise strategy becomes very important and will add to the game's replay value.

I couldn't recommend this game more highly.

Tight gameplay, compelling story, amazing visuals and yeah, there was a gay couple and a trans character but they didn’t make it a huge deal. So there’s no such thing as “pushing an agenda”

The last of us part 2 won't be liked by everyone but I would hope that people know the whole story before judging it because 7 years can't be spit on based on only what youtubers or steamers think. People should listen to what the makers of the game have to say as well.

My score is based on how much I enjoyed it, how I was feeling throughout the game and how sad I was to end it because I just did not want it to end. I deeply loved it and would gladly play a third one if they would ever release it.

Just finished it. I’m literally in awe. Devastated. This is one of the most amazing experiences (and yes, it’s an experience cause calling it a videogame is too reductive) I’ve ever had the privilege to live. Please do yourself a favour and play it. Idk what these haters were thinking, they must be insane. It’s a 100/100. Perfect score. Goty.

I will say that the first game is probably my 2nd favorite game of all time, so following that is no easy task. Plot-wise "Part 2" is messier than the first game, but it's also much more ambitious from a narrative perspective. The artists at ND are really at the top of their craft here. In my opinion you should it on the hardest difficulty you can bear to really emphasize the desperation inherent in the game's world. You can always lower the difficulty in game if it's too much. I'm very glad I chose Survivor for my first playthrough, it wasn't nearly as punishing as the first game on Grounded difficulty, but it was still a proper challenge.

No part of my 30 hours with the game felt unnecessary, it all felt in service of the story Naughty Dog wanted to tell and I think they pretty much stuck the landing. It's not perfect, but I think it can stand as a worthy sequel to the masterpiece that was Part 1. Overall, I think this game will polarize fans, but you can count me squarely in the "loved it" group.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, despite everything, I still love the game, and the overall story. I do agree that there are flaws in the story, but most of them are explainable: like why Abby killed Joel even after he saved her, why she risked her life and betrayed WLF to save Yara and Lev, why Joel let his guard down, why Ellie let Abby go, etc. They are all **explainable**. It's just that the story can be told in a better way, or maybe a different story might be better. However, all in all, I still think TLOU2 is a good game, it deserves better.

I think TLOU (1, 2) are not just games. It's also stories, stories that one can have a more immerse experience, but not something one can control except the author. I value the experience, and emotion shocks the stories gave me. I think this game should be looked at from an audience's perspective, and one should at least try to understand the idea behind the story. Tragedies can also be good story.

I don't agree with everything in the story, but I respect it. I also waited years for the game, I think it still worth the investment I gave it, financially and emotionally. It definitely is not a 10 point game, but I'd still give it a 10 because I don't think it should be less than 7. I would still want to know the future story of Ellie and, very importantly, Abby. I want more TLOU.

Lastly, regarding the trailers, the misleading trailers, those are low, really low.

The the ending is unbelievably depressing and the player is left feeling very unsatisfied, which might have actually been the point. Whether it was the point or not doesn't matter though, the ending just makes you feel like crap and that's never a good thing. Mechanics, graphics and gameplay-wise the game was solid, much better than the original, but the story just isn't there. Killing off most of the favorite characters and leaving others with nothing is NOT a good way to achieve depth. The hope we were left with at the end of the first game is nonexistent at the end of this one. I expected much more, and much better from a studio like Naughty Dog. Expand

I’ve read a few reviews and it appears some believe Naughty Dog is “pandering.” And I imagine by pandering folks mean that recognizing a lesbian could be a main protagonist of a story. Are folks aware that about 99.9% of characters in games are straight and or assumed to be heterosexual? Are production studios pandering to the heterosexual agenda? Further, typically when one is homophobic, it means you’re struggling with some sort of internalized self hate, if you know what I mean. I wanted to call out the obvious contempt for the LGBTQ+ community in the video game community. As for the game, it was amazing. Was it perfect, no. Nothing is perfect. The graphics were stellar. The story was both intense and touching. Ellie’s flashbacks of Joel were touching, especially when he took her to the museum in Wyoming for her birthday. The gameplay was great, it was easy to maneuver throughout the environments. The relationships between characters were well hashed out. I cared about these characters and what happened to them. I felt for Ellie as she struggled to adjust in a world of pain and misery at such a young age. I really enjoyed the game and think most will too. Enjoy the game and learn a thing or two. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, if you are bombing this game’s score just because there’s a lesbian couple, and a trans character at the center of this story, please go somewhere else, it’s 2020 that’s really all I have to say and people with common sense and empathy shouldn’t see an issue with that. Secondly, I can understand why some people have an issue with the way they decided to handle the narrative for this game. I would say (getting negatives out of the way first) my biggest issue with TLOU2 is the pacing and the structure of the story, not really with the story itself. I feel like the pacing would have been better if they somehow found a way to intertwine the 2 huge chunks of the games playtime when you play as Ellie up until Abby finds her and co. at the theatre, and then we jump back and play from Day 1 in Seattle to that moment as Abby. It just felt like all momentum the story had getting to that moment came to a screeching halt and really threw me for a loop for a bit, although after a while I settled in and did become more invested in Abby’s story when I had a chance to see where they were taking this story. Now all of the positives: An absolutely gorgeous game from beginning to end, truly astonishing attention to detail as the environments are so well designed and look so jaw dropping consistently. Sound design is also incredibly impressive it has so much depth, I include the music/score with that. The gameplay is extremely engaging, whether choosing to be stealthy or go in guns blazing. Also, all of the voice acting was absolutely award worthy, especially Ashley Johnson, good lord...she absolutely hit it out of the park, especially since Ellie in this game, is much more complicated of a character to play in my opinion then Ellie from the first game. All in all I say bravo to everyone who had a hand in making this game. From developers to writers, to voice actors and level designers, I believe this game as a whole is an extremely divisive masterpiece. And maybe (much like Metal Gear Solid 2) in time the majority of people who disliked, or even hated, and review bombed this game, will come to realize how rich of an experience it really is, and appreciate it for that. Thanks for reading my first review on MetaCritic! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Abby was a Mistake.
So Abby kills Joel in the first 2 hours of the game and makes you and Ellie hate her and want revenge. Joel, by the way, is arguably one of the most humanized father figures in gaming. In the original, we see Joel go from a loving father to a cold-hearted survivor, and through his connection with Ellie we see him develop into a loving father figure again. The entire 1st game had an underlining message of hope, and I remember hearing that hope was the theme for the first game and that hate was going to be the theme for this game, but they did not deliver on this in trying so hard to make you feel empathetic towards Abby.

The 10 hours spent playing with Abby is a failed attempt to make you feel empathy for a character that murders Joel because Joel murders Abby’s father. Not to mention that Abby’s father held a knife up to Joel when Joel entered the surgery room.

The thing about Abby’s sad story is that most fans of Joel and the 1st game could care less about Abby’s sad story. At most, Abby gets a sarcastic “boo-hoo” and afterwards players are still itching to kill her. If we have learned anything about The Last of Us’ world, it is that everybody in this world has a sad story. Trying to get players to have sympathy for this character in a world full of sad stories was a stretch.

In this world people are forced to choose sides and most fans of the first game have chosen the side of Joel and Ellie. Choosing Joel and Ellie’s side does not mean that we don’t recognize that there are two sides of any conflict or that we agree with Joel and Ellie in all their moral decisions. Choosing their side in this world means that despite their flaws we choose to care about their sad story above all others and we give them leeway to make unmoral decisions in a world that clearly lacks morality. That’s why even if some fans agree that Joel was wrong for saving Ellie and killing the doctor, most fans cannot feel sympathy for Abby because we are fully on Joel and Ellie’s side despite their lack of moral clarity.

The game tries too hard and wastes too much time trying to make you feel something for Abby, and this is where I think some critics miss what fans are pointing out. I agree that it was a risk, gamble, and ambitious to take this route for TLOU2. I have never played a game that tried so hard to make you not only understand but identify with the antagonist’s point of view. I give the developers credit for the try, but fans are correct to point out that they missed the mark completely and I am not sure they could ever make fans who have chosen Joel and Ellie’s side feel bad for Abby. For sure we felt bad for Yara and Lev. We felt horrible for Yara giving her life for Abby. We even read the notes scattered through the abandoned buildings and feel sympathy for the victims in the notes. But Yara and Lev and the other victims you read about have not killed Joel and they are not in conflict with the side we have chosen to back.

The main problem with playing with Abby as fans of the first game is that we feel forced to play with a character we do not feel any connection with for 10 hours. Fans of this title understand that Abby has a sad story, of course she does, everybody in this world has a sad story. Developers thought they could make you feel something for Abby by showing her dad die, showing her focus on training above relationships, showing her help some kids, and showing her get captured and put into slavery. Players on the other hand look at this world as a dog eat dog world and fans of TLOU simply don’t care if Joel wronged Abby or that Abby suffered. The game tries to make you question who the real bad guys are, but for fans its clear through the whole game; Abby is the bad guy and needs to be taken down.

I was not as upset as some by Ellie not killing Abby. I did want Ellie to kill Abby, and if given the choice I would have killed Abby. But again, as a fan of TLOU, I have chosen to care about and support Ellie’s decision, because I care more about her than Abby’s life.

After thinking about this game and seeing the conflict between the WLF and SCARS, I really wish the story could have involved a war between Jackson and some faction like the WLF. They could have shown negotiations breakdown between clans. A war could have broken out. Abby could be in the game and she can still kill Joel, but maybe she realizes during the war that Joel is the same guy that killed her father. Maybe they could have let you play with Joel for a couple of hours before killing him. Jackson could lose the war and be forced to move, and Ellie could have come back for vengeance after her people were safe. Something where we are told about Abby’s story, but not expected to really feel bad for her, because that didn’t work. A war would also have accounted for all the killing throughout the game.

Sorry one last gripe – Not one person gets infected

I knew that Joel was going to die before even going into the game and Ellie being LGTBQ+ wasn't and issue either. I was looking forward to seeing Ellie take a darker turn then how we knew her in the first game and being able to see her kind of take a path similar to Joel's when he was younger but that isn't what was given to the audience. From all the trailers and teasers it seems like Ellie has changed drastically and that shes on this path of revenge on people who killed a father-like figure to her, even though her and Joel weren't in the best place (relationship wise) she still didn't want him to die and at first that's what the story gave us. For most of the game you do play as Ellie and you see her hunt down Abby's friends but she barely ever gets to enact her revenge on any of them. Tommy gets there before her and kills some guys which is okay but doesn't feel great for Ellie then she gets captured and would have died if Dina didn't save her and while she did Kill a guy here it still didn't feel rewarding for the player it was just an "oh sh*t I have to save Dina" moment. I will say that the chase scene for Nora was great and thrilling even Ellie's first encounters with the scars was intense. However, when Ellie tries to question Mel and Owen it seems very sloppy and I know Ellie has never done anything like that before so its reasonable that she would be sloppy it just doesn't feel like the Ellie the audience was shown. I would have preferred a much darker version of Ellie where she does have some knowledge and practice at torturing people for information thanks to Joel and instead of Tommy getting to kill people it should've been just Ellie with Dina alongside her watching as Ellie spirals down into a pit of anger and rage and blood-lust, it would make Dina's character and relationship with Ellie a bit more impactful and important to the story. Having Dina watch Ellie turn into something she can't see herself being with anymore and then it becomes a story where Ellie wants revenge but at what cost? she loses Dina and her friends because she so consumed in her rage and hatred for Abby's friends but that wasn't what we got. After Ellie gives Mel and Owen, Abby hunts her down and injures Tommy and kills Jesse but before getting to the first showdown your forced to place as Abby for the next 10 hours. While I understand the contrast they were trying to make with Abby and the first game it all just falls apart. You can't force your audience to feel bad or love a character after seeing all the horrible things they've done, its like taking Harry Potter and forcing the viewer to feel bad or care about Voldemort after seeing all the terrible things he's done to people it just doesn't work that way. The story should have began with Abby which would of forced the player to get used to new characters and maybe liking some of them without having the knowledge of these people being the ones who kill Joel. It was very hard to play the game and be forced to play as Abby during the first fight with Ellie it didn't feel good or fun to play. It doesn't even make you think Abby is a good person, she would have killed Dina knowing that she was pregnant when Ellie had no clue that Mel was pregnant, she only found out after killing her and Owen. The story focuses so much on trying to make you feel bad for Abby that you question why Ellie is even in the game, it makes you feel like it isn't even her story anymore. Even the ending leaves a bad taste in the mouths of the audience when after not being able to let go of Joel and everything that has happened she once again sets out to get her revenge but doesn't even get that and then loses Dina over nothing. Abby got her revenge and lived granted her friends are dead now she still took out her revenge against someone that killed her dad. Ellie set out for revenge lost her friend and even later on her girlfriend and for what? Ellie didn't take out her revenge she went and killed 4 people that only traveled along with Abby, she didn't kill the target of her anger while Abby did. The message of the story feels like revenge for Abby is good while revenge for Ellie is bad, why? That's my issue with the game. Overall is just didn't leave the player feeling like they accomplished anything. I would of liked for Ellie to have killed Abby and lost Dina because she set out and took her revenge even when Dina told her to stay then that makes the player really feel the weight of the decision Ellie made. She lost the person she loved because she went to kill Abby but this isn't what happened and the story just fell short for me in the end. Expand

The biggest issue remains with the story. The story is definitely not good. It is inconsistent with what has been shown previously regarding the characters we have come to know and love in the previous game. The worst part, however, is how the game has cheap attempts to make you feel bad about the people or the animals you kill whilst forcing you to kill them. It's a horrible misinterpretation of what it means to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. Abby is an insult to the gamers. She is the worst character, nobody likes her, nobody can identify with her. She is just another example of badly written female characters imposing unrealistic body standards to women. And to add salt to the injury, we don't even get the satisfaction of killing her as Ellie by the end of the game. This game is not a 0/10, but it is definitely not a 10/10 like most "critics" seem to pretend. This game is nothing special, it is just average. A 6/10, maybe a 7/10 if you can really get into it. Regarding the LGBT elements present in the story, I don't really care about those. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is NOT a 0/10, review bombing isn't constructive. It's disrespectful to the hundreds of artists, programmers, musicians, writers, and game designers in general. Just because the story wasn't how you expected it to be doesn't mean the entire game is garbage.
That being said, I DO AGREE that this wasn't the direction the sequel should have taken. To me, this game feels like a spin-off rather than a direct continuation of Ellie and Joel's story. It is still however, an engaging and thought provoking story that, when you open your mind a little, really makes you question whether or not Abby deserves to be hated so much.

Well done Naughty Dog, I consider this game a masterpiece, but I can't shake the feeling of frustration about Joel. He deserved to have his story ended far better than what you gave him. But besides that, everything else about this game was top notch.

The story is absolutely heart wrenchingly good. It's not a story of revenge like everyone is saying. It's not a story of "killing is bad". Plenty of people do plenty of killing. It's a necessity in this world. This is a story about grief and hate. One thing leads to another and the characters end up being led by pure hatred. And I was too. The game made me feel the loss of the characters and made me want to "kill every last one of them". While I cared for some characters much more than others, it's still very easy to see that everything that the characters do, is well within what they would do if they were real people. Unfortunately this leads to some horrible and dark choices, but that is what would realistically happen. It's not bleak, it's evocative. It makes you feel the same sadness and the same happiness that the characters feel. The game has so many happy moments. Potato is a bundle of joy. They are emphasised so much by how dark the characters get in other scenes. It is all woven together and creates a huge contrast where - in the end - you're left with this sinking feeling of grey. In the end it's not about "revenge is bad". It's about how the characters grow and deal with the pain that they're living with, and the price that they have to pay for so desperately wanting that pain to go away. It's about acceptance that something has happened and you just can't change the past. You can't make memories go away, and that's something that we all have to deal with. Along with the choice of whether to let the hatred go or to sacrifice everything in your life in pursuit of satiating that hatred. Go into this game with an open mind. Don't just discount it or look for flaws. Honestly, I just wish there was more. Story is a 10

Ellie is my favourite character. Let me get into the gameplay. Phenomenal play styles that really flow with the character that you're playing. It em
phasises what you're able to do with the tools and physicality available to you. Stealth? Run and gun? Bit of both? You got it. You already know about the enemies calling each other by names and the brutality of it all. Honestly, to me it was just incredibly satisfying to have the different options where I could lay traps, lure people to a place, swim under water and attack someone from behind. Maybe even threaten someone else by holding their friend hostage. Or even just evading them all can end up exciting. It's all accessible too, which is great. Very customisable. Gameplay is a 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've waited 7 years for this game and Naughty Dog surpassed itself yet again. The graphics, the mechanics, the atmosphere, and the story are amazing. The Horse and boat mechanics are very smooth, it didn't feel as clunky compared to the first game. Same with the character mechanics; it felt very quick and responsive.

I love the new craftables and the redesign of the Stalkers. The stalkers in the first game felt more like the runners, they didn't feel like its own infected stage compared to the second game. I'm glad ND made it a bit more unique and fun to fight.

I really like the story; I love how you play as Ellie in the first part full with rage to seek your revenge; I also love how ND makes you play as the "villain" Abby in the second part. The first game was very bias in viewpoint because you are mainly playing as Joel and I love how they switched it up in Part 2. A story can have multiple climaxes and viewpoints and TLOU2 did that fairly well.

When I first played Abby, I didn't really have much feelings towards here. I tried to keep an open mind about the character. And surprisingly, I came to like here more and more as her story progress. I love the relationship between her and the Sepharites kids. The only thing i didn't like was the awkward love triangle between Abby, Owen, and Mel but I can understand how they can be foils to Ellie's, Jesse's, and Dina's relationship.

The game completely drained all of my emotions. I was struggling to fight Abby in the end. I knew her past self was completely during the pillar scene. Both Ellie and Abby were husks of their previous selves. Ellie suffers from PTSD and lost of friends and her father figure. Abby Lost all here friends (but Lev) and suffered nightmares even if she got her revenge.

The Last of Us Part 2 story was more than just about revenge, it was more about forgiveness and acceptances. During the scene where Ellie was drowning Abby in the last fight she had a flashback of her and Joel; that flashback was predominantly talking about forgiveness, Ellie forgiving Joel. That struck a cord, Ellie knew killing Abby was not worth it, it was only going to continue the cycle (maybe Lev seeking revenge if Ellie kills Abby and so on).

Sometimes in life the best closure is to forgive and to accept. In the end, Ellie forgives Joel and accepts his death and both Ellie and Abby forgave one other knowing revenge would be childish.

What's interesting in this game is that there is a lot of parallels in this game. Specifically toward the end of the game, Abby and Lev (during the pillar and beach scene) parallels Joel and Ellie during the hospital scene. That was a nice detail. Overall this game is great! Definitely in my eyes out did it's predecessor.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay so, I really really want to love this game. I’ve been waiting YEARS to finally hear more of Joel and Ellie’s story, however it pains me to say that you spend way to much time playing as people who aren’t Ellie or Joel.

I totally understand it from a design perspective, they wanted to throw a wrench into traditional storytelling and humanize the bad guys. However, this is a tall order when you’re trying to get the audience to sympathize with the character that just murdered 1/2 of one of gaming’s most beloved duos. This did not hit the way they intended it to, and it turns these segments into boring filler with no real weight or consequence. All in all, that’s pretty much my only gripe with the game. Gunplay feels a little stiff sometimes, but other than that, I really enjoyed my play through, and would most definitely recommend picking this game up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Does the story suffer from poor writing? or Is it a story that you don't like?

I believe The Last of Us 2 has suffered from both, but more definitely the latter. This is a story that people (including me) don't like. The storytelling wouldn't be under such scrutiny if the story itself was something that we appreciated. I can not critisize the game for its amazing graphics, world creation, and gameplay. It's a beautifully made game. However, with the Last of Us. It's the STORY that matters most. And this is where Naughty Dog left most of it's players upset and exhausted. (FYI, I was blessed not to have to anything spoiled for me prior to playing this game.)

I would like to state that it seems that players who like the game are claiming that MOST of the gamers who dislike TLOU2, dislike it because of LGBTQ representation and main female character. While I would say there are definitely a lot of bigots who are leaving reviews, i believe it is unfair to generalize. Many gamers praise Naughty God for its intention with diversity, but still feel cheated by the story. Especially fans of The Oringal The Last of Us. This game was a long and depressing ride. If you liked the first one, be prepared to be heartbroken.

Naughty Dog seems to have underestimated how much the fans connected with Joel and Ellie from the first game. Not just the characters, but the relationship they developed. You feel for them. You root for them as you see them protect and fight for each other. TLOU2 very swiftly destroyed Joel and Ellie's relationship, killed Joel, and turned Ellie into a broken revenge addict. This is where fans may not like the story. For fair reason. Naughty Dog seemed to disregard why Fans liked the first game for the sake of telling a risky and emotionally draining story. It was not a pleasant experience for the fan and that should make the developers think. However, the game does make you think and ponder upon some of the deeper themes the story makes you ask. I dislike the story, but cannot say It is a story that lacks depth. I dislike the story, but that does not mean it's a "bad" story.

Now the storytelling... Where the story telling fails is regarding Abby. While I still cannot imagine sympathizing with her at all, I believe telling a little bit more of her story in the beginning of the game and fleshing that out... would have helped naughty dog achieve what they wanted. Which is for the player to connect with Abby. This was not done... and it left me personally, wanting to quickly finish the Abby parts to get back to Ellie's narrative. However, quickly finding out that Abby's story keeps going. I was waiting and expecting a switch back to Ellie in the boss fight where you play as Abby, and was subsequently disgusted that the studio had me play a character I didn't like... to beat up a character I was rooting for.

All in all. I have mixed feelings. As any gamer would by the end of the game. A dark, depressing, rollercoaster. I just hope that if there is a part 3. That we do not play as Abby for the majority of it. 6/10
