Poor history needed more truth for the final dissapointed to say no more but Instead, the punishingly bleak sequel kills off the original's main character and turns the secondary hero into a villain. It takes violence to a level that is uncomfortable even by the standards of video games, and seemingly does everything in its power to make gamers feel bad about the act of playing it.

As I write this, the man is bragging about the *amount* of reviews on metacritic, stating it has exceeded the amount given to the previous game. It says everything you need to know about him and his philosophy - "get attention at all costs" and "no such thing as bad press".

As for the game itself, there is no game. There never was - this game, as well as the previous one, were all about the story and the characters. And since that aspect didn't just fail, but actively antagonizes and spits in the faces of both new players and old fans alike, it doesn't have any saving grace.

It's absolute garbage and the equivalent of someone taking a dump in the middle of the room.

    It's simply uncivilized.

Terrible narrative, storytelling, poor quality of joel's death we didn't even get to play as him, we didn't get to play as Tommy and we were forced to play for 8 **** hours as Abby a dislikable character who just killed the main character with a golf stick in order to understand her actions and feel sympathy for her while I don't give a **** about her and not only that but the ending is even worse while she fought her when she has lost muscle had no energy and she even removed 2 fingers of Ellie and basically losing everything while Abby got away with the kid.
The whole game was just to give the message that with vengeance won't solve everything and will hurt everyone surround you what a joke

However, that you 2/3 into the game gets stuck in what you think is a short 20 min view of the antagonist motives turn in to 11 hours and 38 minutes until I'm once again given control of our protagonist Ellie.

On the technical side, the only annoyance I've had to struggle with is some strange rubber-banding on the companions AI, where they block you from hiding or moving over certain areas unless, you walk far enough away some they are pulled to move then you can try and interact with them. The handicap options are top notch and more games should take notice on how to implement these options in their games

The constant jumping in timelines and wonky rubber-banding companion AI makes a mess of a story that was great until 2/3 in. I don't care for the antagonists motives and nothing in my 11 hours and 38 minutes changes that other than making it a grind to push thru to see the rest of Ellie's story.

It is necessary to drive with the sledge rags all these creators and their defenders. Therefore, purely fundamentally put 0 points. This game is such a massive shift from the first one, story wise. The storytelling, imo, is amazing. It is literally the first time any entertainment media has left me feeling so uncomfortable, conflicted and so emotionally exhausted. The gameplay is an organic evolution of the first one, adding little bits of refinement here and there. I like how they added a little bit of exploration and multiple routes to tackle an encounter. Graphically, it is one of the best looking games of this generation on any platform. Voice acting, as expected, is top notch stuff from the greatest actors in this industry. Gustavo Santaolalla yet again delivers with another masterpiece of a poignant yet beautiful score. My only gripe with the game is that it didn't give enough time to develop side characters. Overall, although poles apart from the first game thematically, The Last of Us Part 2 stands shoulder to shoulder with its predecessor as a landmark in cinematic storytelling in videogames. However, since the actual focus of the game, it's story, is so bold and divisive, I'd rate this a PlayItYourselfAndFormYourOwnOpinions/10 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am changing my review after thinking about this for a while. Originally I gave the game a 7/10...but upon reflection...the game is really problematic.

ND attempted to tell two stories in one game and really missed the mark on fully telling either. This game should have started off on Abby where we would hear her full story before swapping over to Ellie after Joel's death. Instead, we get to play as Ellie for half the game with no real information about Abby until the last half of the game. ND sold us an Ellie focused game, and then proceeded to make us play as Abby for 10 **** hours. I did a lot of exploring, but holy **** Abby's part was LONG. An hour or two of Abby would have told her story better than what was told in 10 hours. Editing is really important. The game tries to make Abby a character worth feeling something for, but I just wanted to get back to Ellie by the end of it. Getting back to Ellie wasn't even worth it at the end of Abby's story. Why? Because after you hear about Abby...umm...Ellie's story just stops. Legit, that's pretty much the end of the game. This whole concept of a revenge quest...and you barely get a quest for revenge. You get mostly Tommy killing people off screen and Ellie opening gates shooting the **** with Dina.

Now, let's talk about stuff that really just doesn't make sense or is completely gratuitous...I was pumped to play as Ellie and Abby. I was pumped they stuck with the lore of Ellie being gay. The relationship between Ellie and Dina is beautifully written...but...why the **** is Dina pregnant again? What does this add? All Dina being pregnant does is take your companion out of the game for hours, leaving you with no story or character development because you have no one to talk to. Dina being pregnant really feels like a cheap trick. It feels like they added it because Ellie killing Owen and Nora didn't have enough weight on its own. That scene was just being screamed at "DINA PREGNANT, NORA PREGNANT BAD ELLIE" You can do better than that.

Abby sex scene...what is the point of this? I totally get the scene between Ellie and Dina. It sets up Ellie for an innocence lost story line. More importantly, it was done tastefully. I am in no way a prude, but Abby's sex scene was the most gratuitous sex scene I have seen added to a game in a LONG **** time.

Lev...ugh Lev...What a disappointment. I am all for diversity in games. I was kind of excited that they were adding a non-binary character, because the storyline could have been ****in good. BUT...oof, it is hard to say...Lev is basically trans/non-binary...and that's the only thing compelling about the character. Diversity is good when it's done well, but when you make a character gay or trans and that is the ONLY thing present in their character, you end up harming more than you are helping.

The cult (scars)...The cult feels like ND was so afraid of offending people, they just decided to not develop any story line here. The game makes a choice to not be political, but ends up being both political and boring. I spent so much **** time looking for journal entries and notes in a desperate attempt to find a storyline. I can confirm now that one does not exist. Remember all that cool game footage of fighting scars? Yeah, that's legit all there is in the game. It's like one fight and then they are gone from Ellie's story. The scars are the focus of Abby's story...I searched for a story line there too. The story doesn't exist. You could actually just remove this group from the game and replace them with WLF and you wouldn't even feel a difference.

The ending...oof. I am ok with Ellie letting Abby go, but...why does Ellie need to lose two fingers? Why does Dina abandon Ellie? The ending really makes the story weaker as a whole, and also takes away any replay value of the game. "It can't all be for nothing" YES IT CAN. This is not an ending worthy of anything close to 10/10. The ending didn't stand up on its own due to failures in storytelling throughout the game. Ellie's loss of her fingers feels like something added as an afterthought to give it more weight than it actually has. The end didn't tie the whole "revenge is bad" thing together, so they just added another cheap trick. They basically shock jocked it. Wtf is with the Dina **** Dina is your ride or die for the entire **** game and when Ellie just wants closure, THAT is where she draws the line? Kill hundreds of people, almost die twice "yeah, bruh we good." Wants closure after years of PTSD "buh bye" WHAT?

This isn't a masterpiece. This is an unfinished game. Even the saving grace of this game -- the animations -- are unfinished. All that talk of animations...and your stealth kills ARE THE SAME EVERY TIME. It really feels unfinished. To create a game that is bleak is one thing, but to release an unfinished game that has no replay value...oof, I expected better.

I do not understand such a wave of hatred for this story. The story just perfectly shows the characters and reveals the main theme - the cycle of hatred. If you did not understand the main message, most likely you were attentive to the wrong things. Many thanks to Naugty Dog for the amazing sequel. Have a nice day, everyone!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In my opinion it is a good game. It has its good things as its bad things. One of the good things that I can highlight are the gameplay, the way to target artificial intelligence, among others. The graphics look great. Other things that I can highlight are the small details that nauthy dog gives that her games, this is not far behind, each stage, each climate were surely created down to the smallest detail. Now I will talk about history. Let's start at the beginning. It is quite good that they show the environment in which the characters live and show their respective indifferences. Ellie looks more mature but is still a teenager. Dina (her love interest) is very well added, since the dlc of the first game Ellie's sexuality is demonstrated. I have many more things to say but I really don't remember right now. Now I will say the bad or regular things. I start with the first most important death in the game, Joel's, considering that he is no longer the same as before and because not because he is the protagonist he has to be invincible, but even so they could implement this fact in the middle of the game (for example) even so what happened makes the players want to take revenge with all their forces. Another thing I didn't like too much was how much we used Abby. I know that somehow they try to explain the other side of the coin, but a lot of people already bored playing with the antagonist so much. Now I will talk about the deaths. To be honest I liked the deaths of Abby's friends, except for the pregnant girl, that touched me a little. Jessi's death was shocking, they didn't even give us time to say goodbye. I didn't like that much. Regarding the end, I would have loved that we could kill Abby or at least have been bitten by an infected person and die. In the end when Ellie leaves the guitar alone it seems to me that it is like a way to forgive Joel. In my opinion it was a great game, yes, not for any type of public. By the way, if I wrote something that doesn't make sense it's the Google translator's fault. Expand

Disappointing game with unattractive characters, bad writing, unnecessary sex scenes, trans character, deadnaming and lots of other stuff not needed. In fact, this game didn't have to be made at all. No need to ruin the ending from the 1st game with a badly written plot just to milk the franchise.

Couple this with the prevalent bigoted comments, there seems to be little focus on rational criticisms aside from a quick acknowledgement that a few exist. Instead, the more exhaustive discussions often seem to digress into this belief that the majority of scrutiny has an ulterior, alt-right motive (beknownst to the reviewer or not). While it is important to talk about considering it could very well be true, the toxic and polarizing result leaves little room left for those valid critiques.

And I (among several others I've spotted) thought there were huge problems with the game that aren't nested in anti-progressive attitudes...

On the vaccine - my interpretation (and it could be wrong) of the first game was that this was nothing more than fleeting hope amongst an incredibly desperate rag-tag group of abused and abusive individuals. There was little, if any, inductive evidence provided to suggest that one could actually be derived from Ellie, aside from minor lip-service. There was no invitro-testing, data analysis, or even procurement of proper scientific equipment to produce one, presented/mentioned in the storyline. Then there's the manufacturing, development, adverse-event monitoring, and proper coordination of conveying this information to other researchers/physicians (and how many of those are left?) across the continent in order to vaccinate everyone, assuming there would be no other unforeseen phenomenon, catastrophes, wars over the drug, etc… All in all, the science was left to your imagination, which is fine, but my imagination never really lead me to believe that, in this universe as presented, it was viable. So I understood (though didn't necessarily agree) with Joel's motivations in the first game, and why I felt that his lie to Ellie was so moving at the end.

I'm unsure if the story of LOUII was already planned during the development of the first. If so, I think the first one should've been handled differently. If not, then I'm not clear as to why so much weight was given to the effectiveness of the vaccine, as it was never construed to be. This trivializes the ethical justification for Abby - as I do not truly believe she was utilitarian, nor her father. Thus, it's hard to agree an "eye for an eye" was ever properly indicated, which I think was the intent of this revenge plot.

So I didn't really like the story for that main reason. The gameplay was also a bit boring -- it just felt dated, and perhaps there were just too many interactive cinematic parts. I strongly disliked the soundtrack... I didn't find any of the (very few) tracks moving, aside from a few pieces, and most of the game you trudge through silence. Though the actual sound effects were solid, as was the voice acting.

Graphics, on the other hand, were brilliant. It's a shame I can't get as much FPS as I'd like from a PS4, but nonetheless, they were absolutely phenomenal!

Overall - I'd give this game a 3/10. The main value resulting from the artistic portrayal of the environments. It wasn't really fun to play, the story was a bit too long, and the motif of revenge has been done better before. At $60... that's asking too much for the quality that it is...

There were times where the game really shined but those did not outweigh the lunky storytelling. It felt like a kid wrote most of the lines in this game. They just weren’t believable. I will say the level design, environments, voice acting were all superb. I applaud their thinking in creating a fame with a diverse social cast, but as a LGBT person I think they could have done better. I thought the transgender story line was fine but they could have made the character much deeper. This game had so much promise and I am heartbroken over it not delivering. The Last Of Us part 1 is unequivocally my favorite game of all time. Neil Druckmann’s ego is too huge and he needs stop attacking his fans for expressing their opinions on the game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay, graphics, and the other technical things in this game were beautiful. I liked the LGBT+ representation as it makes for a more realistic world. However, what made The Last of Us 1 such a great game, was the story, well developed characters, and the consistency of the actions those characters took with their personalities. My two main issues with this game was the manner in which Joel died, as well as how Ellie killed all those people to avenge Joel, but when it came to the one who was actually responsible, she lets her go.
Joel in the first game is characterized as an extremely cautious veteran in his world, he was able to spot an ambush with a single look, and furthermore, even Ellie who was far less experienced at the time had a distinct distrust in strangers, refusing to give them actual names. In Joel’s death scene, Tommy gives his real name which is understandable as he didn’t go through what Joel did and hurt/make enemies of nearly as many people as Joel did. Joel on the other hand, actually gave his real name while being in a room full of absolute strangers surrounding him on either side? Not to mention they were both aware of rival groups like hunters, WLF, and others that would willingly kill anyone not associated with them. Yet he gives his actual name, and then gets killed. Furthermore, the placing of his death is amazingly bad taking into account that we’re supposed to attempt to empathize with Abby as we play as her for a large part of the game. It only made me hate the game more as I played as this character who does atrocious things to the people I grew to love from the first game as well as many innocent people.
Ellie’s initial response to Joel’s death was perfect, she was ready to go after Abby immediately to avenge her murdered father figure. I like most of what happens in the story from that point on, until it comes to killing Abby. Not only does she not kill her for murdering Joel, she doesn’t kill her when she has the opportunity, seconds after ABBY BITES HER FINGERS OFF. It isn’t consistent with who Ellie is as a character, she has a body count of hundreds if not in the thousands, and the one person she refuses to kill is the one who murdered her “father”?
It is useless for me to state my issues with the game without presenting a way to fix it. As shown by your user score, the fans overwhelmingly dislike this game, it spit on the beautiful legacy of the previous game, similarly to how Joel’s dead body was spit on and insulted. As stated previously, I am not adverse to Joel dying, however it should have been done in a more ‘consistent with the character’ manner. For example, instead of him dying in the beginning, we have Joel, Ellie, Dina and whoever else set out on a journey to investigate rumors of a cure/vaccine being found. This happens right after Joel tells Ellie the truth of what happened with the Fireflies and the ending of the last game. She is extremely confused and conflicted, Dina comes in and helps her work through it, building that romance, and together they guilt Joel into going with them to investigate. Simultaneously, we meet Abby, who is searching for the man who murdered her father. We watch her develop relationships with her companions, play as her as she overcomes different obstacles and they grow to love her. The theme of forgiveness becomes an underlying theme as during Ellie’s journey, she starts as being hateful and disrespectful to Joel for lying to her and taking away humanity’s chance at stopping the infection. But through multiple days/weeks of traveling together, being reminded of old times through flashbacks, Dina playing Devil’s advocate as she would have never been able to fall in love with Ellie if Joel hadn’t saved her etc. She would come to forgive Joel. On Abby’s side, her father was a surgeon who tried to find a cure, so she heads to where a ‘cure’ is found(same place as Ellie) for clues on her father’s killer. Eventually, they meet as Joel and Ellie save Abby. They start traveling together and both parties start to become friends as they work their way towards the cure, once they get there Abby realizes Joel is the man who murdered her father, but is conflicted as she knows the reason why, and Ellie as well as the others convince her to forgive Joel. Ellie helps make the cure with her blood or something like that, and boom, it ends with Ellie and Joel playing in their guitars with their new family around them.
If this is too much of a radical change, then a simpler one would be Ellie finishing the job and killing Abby, then Levi. When she kills Levi she mirrors the words Joel said when he killed Marleen. Then the ending is the same except that when she finds she is unable to play the song, she flashes back to Joel and says “I guess I’m the last of us” or something along those lines and walks off.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Take it as you will - I wasn't a huge fan of the first game but I at least respected the story and liked the characters. I am a huge fan of the Uncharted series, which is the only reason I picked up this game or the last one. I'm a man of few words, but here goes.

If the cycle of revenge is so bad, why does Abby get to brutally murder Joel without remorse, and get to continue about her life as if nothing happened? Why doesn't Ellie get the same satisfaction? Abby even took away Ellie's ability to play the guitar, taking away what was arguably the only everlasting gift Joel gave her, and yet neither Ellie nor the player is given any agency whatsoever in deciding Abby's fate. Naughty Dog should be ashamed of themselves. You have wronged every player and I hope you realise Neil Druckmann is a pathetic excuse for a director. I will not be playing another one of your games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU2 gets 1 point for graphics and score; it loses 9 points because this game absolutely craps all over the first game and its protagonists and force-feeds you a story and a character that you neither want nor care about. Its main point/theme is supposedly that "revenge is bad" and yet it fails miserably at making that point, given that:
    a) As Ellie, you kill hundreds of human beings in your quest for revenge against Abby for killing Joel, then suddenly Ellie decides to give up on that because she daydreams about Joel playing guitar (?!?!?). You literally kill with abandon to reach your goal, and then have nothing to show for it but the loss of two fingers, preventing Ellie from ever playing guitar again and leaving her alone, with nobody. So Ellie *doesn't* exact her revenge, and in the end, she still winds up alone and disabled.
    b) Abby successfully *does* get her revenge by killing Joel early in the game in front of Ellie, and ultimately suffers no real, lasting consequences from it. She basically "wins" and gets to sail off into the sunset.
Seriously, this game is a big "FU" from Neil Druckmann and Naughty Dog to the first game and all of the fans that loved the dynamic between Joel and Ellie. It's like a bad fanfiction from someone who hated the first game, come to life. The first TLOU is a masterpiece that is one of my favorite games ever made, and this game is, to put it frankly, a dumpster fire. I will never consider this game as canon.

The Last of Us 2 may well be the most beautiful (and beautifully ugly/horrifying at times) game I've played. And not just for tech reasons - though I'm sure that helps - but the lighting (they literally have a lighting director!), level design, plot pacing, music and sound (incredible surround sound and e.g. a creepy heartbeat-like music in a tunnel). The total package. And the voiceThe Last of Us 2 may well be the most beautiful (and beautifully ugly/horrifying at times) game I've played. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
