Although the story was a bit disappointing, the gameplay, graphics, and overall sound design and music made me love this game and although at times I feel conflicted on how I feel about this game, it has definitely made a lasting impression.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have never reviewed a game before like this and actually created this account just to do this. The last of us part 2 is as poorly written as it is beautiful. After completing the very lengthy story of the game I truly still can’t comprehend why the writers of this game chose to treat these beloved characters with such disrespect. Joel’s death is something I won’t even get into because of how obvious it is on how disrespectful and poorly thought out it was. The rest of the story on the other hand is possibly the worst narrative I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing. The story follows a revenge plot with no pay off mixed in with a confusing attempt to make the player play as and sympathize with the very person that committed the heinous act of brutally murdering Joel and other characters during the story. Throughout this time playing as Abby (which was nearly if not half of the game) I had zero empathy for her and her group of friends and was honestly just bored and not wanting to continue through the story. This boredom was also attributed to the games poor pacing as it would constantly throw you into intense pivotal scenes only to pull you into a flashback from years before. As much of a massive fan as I am of the original game I have never felt so disappointed and utterly betrayed as I have after experiencing the last of us part 2. This in my opinion even with the success in sales will forever be one of the biggest disappointments in gaming history. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Play as your dad’s killer simulator. Absolute trash and insulting to your fan base. Really disappointed after everything I’ve seen from the Last of Us story. I’ll just end it with the expansions in my head thank you. The only good thing about this game is it’s graphics. I went into this knowing that Joel would most likely die because that’s how the story would naturally progress. However, forcing us play as his killer for a good portion of the game and trying to make us see them as a good person is just a slap in the face. The creators were very obviously trying to make something thought provoking but it fell flat and became a basic run around revenge story. It’s disappointing after how amazing the first game was. I’m really sad that this is what they chose to do with what could’ve been a wonderful sequel. Note: I usually don’t feel a need to post reviews for games because I think everyone should have their own opinion. Seriously though, don’t waste your money on this. Expand

The game is 10/10 in all aspects but the story.. which is truly disappointing since it's the main focus of the game! We get it. every person isn't purely bad or good and revenge is bad but it just feels very heavy handed and forced in. Honestly The flow of the narrative is not natural as the first game!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played the first TLOU a week before this game came out and I found it pretty enjoyable. It wasn't bad but it wasn't my favorite. I thought the gameplay was alright, the only thing that subtracted my opinions on the gameplay was the fact that the infected were not fun to fight, for me personally. The ending however was amazing, I thought it was such a cool climax to the story of how Joel did not want to lose the only thing left he had in his life

TLOU2 had a cool story concept, trying to take down Abbys friends to find her location and get avenge Joel, but I feel like the execution could have been better

    The Good:
The Gameplay: Even though it is almost the exact same gameplay as the first game, I felt like they added mechanics that made the gameplay loop a little bit more enjoyable in this game. I loved the dodge and prone features the most, those added a lot to the encounters. The jump button was pretty useless though lol. (Gameplay - 8/10)

Graphics: Not a lot can be said about this. The graphics were super stunning and created amazing environments, although every once in a while a characters model would look a bit weird(Graphics - 9/10)

    The Eh:
Story (Before the ending) : First off I want to say I didn't hate the story, but there are some subtle things here and there that I thought was dumb. The first plot point I thought was kind of dumb was the fact that Joel saved Abby. In the first game he knows not to trust people, it's shown multiple times throughout the game, but in this story he just finds a random girl in the woods and brings her back to her place and talks about Jackson and his name?? I would understand this a lot more if they might have explained that he grew to trust people more, but this came out of no where

People also say that Joels death was stupid for such an amazing character, and I feel like this was kind of the point. I feel like Neil wanted the player to be upset that the legend went out like this, he wanted us to be upset with Abby for killing him so we can have more of a reason to want revenge, but instead more people were mad at the game and Neil

Even though that part was questionable I kept going and I was enjoying the story of trying to hunt down the people who murdered Joel and constantly getting leads to where they are, and at the same time looking for Tommy. I loved the hospital fight with Nora, and I thought the aquarium scene was pretty cool too

The next story moment that was questionable was the switch to Abby. At first I hated it. I thought "why would I want to play as the bad guy for the next 3 days", but it turned out to not be as bad as I thought it would be. I definently would've preferred to play more as Ellie though. I understood what they were trying to do with this section of the game. They wanted you to see Abby and her friends that Ellie killed as good people so you could see how both of these protagonists were hurt by each-other and they both have/had the intention to avenge a loved one. I feel like they wanted you to not root for anyone in this situation. After all of Abbys arc, I still wanted Ellie to get her revenge. I did start to like Abby as a character/villain/"good person" but I never wanted her to get away/win. Ellie was already too committed to just lose or give up. (Or so I thought)

I also didn't care for the part of Abbys story when she helps the two scar kids. I understand why she did it and why Neil wanted to do it. Neil wanted her to seem like a better person and she wanted to do it because they saved her life. But going across a tall bridge and fighting a new type pf infected boss to save that one girls life for her to just die like 45 minutes later made the entirety of Day 2 feel pointless and wasted. (Story - 7/10)

Those were the only parts of the story that really didn't sit well with me, but now it's time for the part of the game that probably disappointed me the most

    The Bad:
Ending: I first thought the ending was the first part of the farm. If it would've ended there, I would have thought it was anticlimactic, but an okay ending. But nope it had to keep going. Ellie wants to hunt down Abby to finish what Joel started. She nearly kills Abby, then stops, and lets her go, making the entire game and story (for me) feel pointless. I understood that she realized that revenge is wrong, but the last two hours of searching for Abby just to let her go felt so pointless. The ending was super unsatisfying but I feel like that was the point. I wish Ellie would have gotten her revenge and come back home to Dina, but Neil wanted to tell a different but understandable story where an unhappy ending is not uncommon in this world. (Ending - 5/10)

Overall, I enjoyed my time with the game. The game was definitely carried by the gameplay rather than the story. The story was alright with a crummy ending for Ellie.
    7/10.

    Have a great day!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For fans of the original, this is a joke and a absolute disappointment for all of those who have waited seven years for a great, and even better sequel. The story is mediocre and is a slap in the face with razor blades and lemon juice. Yes the gameplay and graphics are some of the best I have ever seen, but the story is so atrocious, that I had constantly found it challenging to continue my play through. My hands were as if they did not want me to pick up the controller to pick up where I left off. Spoiler warning from this point on: In the beginning we play as Joel for only 1-2 minutes and then his killed off in a terrible way. For the rest of the game we play as Ellie and Another woman whom I cannot name. These two women are suppose to be “strong female characters” or that is what it appears to me. I do not have a problem with playing as women, the problem is how they decided to make us play with the person who killed the protagonist of part one, who was loved by many because of how relatable and defined his personality was. That was all thrown out the window for part 2, because Joel is much more carefree and friendly. For anyone who as played part one, this is a different Joel compared to the cruel survivor of part one. The cool character that we once knew for his rampages and one man army fights, was easily taken down by just a small group, not to include that Tommy was there too. Half of the game we play as Jack M. Crazy Fist (the woman who killed Joel) I don’t what the writers were thinking when they made the choice to make US the player, play as this hated character. If they wanted to tell her story, then just do it in flashbacks that aren’t long. As for Ellie her story is getting revenge for her father figure, Joel. Revenge and a love story is what Ellie’s journey is. Normally I wouldn’t have a problem with choices like this, but the way they chose to show and tell these events were just awful. Back to Joel, he is just a “memory” in this sequel, as he is only seen in flashbacks from the moment of his death that happens in the beginning of the game. We the fans wanted a fully playable Joel with a combination of his old man strength, and raw beard power. If we could not play as Joel, then it would have been nice to at least have him as a companion with a later death with a purpose. There are many other factors to contribute to the downfall of such a beautiful masterpiece, such as the trailer that had many fans believe that Joel was alive and was with Ellie during her journey. My last point is the ending. Ellie’s entire journey was to kill Joel’s murder, and at the end she lets The ox woman live. Not to mention that Jack M. Fist bites Ellie’s fingers off and she doesn't finish her off. Ellie forgives for the cold killing of Joel, but doesn't forgive Joel for saving her, this made me want to grab a brick in real life and throw it through my TV. The only reason I don’t give it a zero, is because of the graphics, gameplay, and attention to detail. This game was a HUGE let down and disappointment. Expand

Naughty Dog knows these characters better than any of us, and they are telling the story they want to. Just because we don't agree with something, it doesn't make the game bad. We're meant to disagree with choices they make, because believe it or not, these characters are flawed humans, just like the rest of us (yeah, I'm looking at you guys giving this game a 0 without even picking it up). I definitely didn't always agree with the direction the story took, or the decisions the characters made, but that's the beauty of it.. I'm not supposed to. It's not my story. It's Naughty Dogs, and man is it brutal, dark, and miserable. But again, that's the point. I'm just thankful they're not afraid to tell it the way they wanted it. As for the gameplay, I don't have much to say. Yeah it's more or less the same, but refined with an added layer. It worked the first time, and it's even better here. As for the environments, Naughty Dog has outdone themselves. The attention to detail is crazy. To think a designer spent weeks perfecting a room that I rushed through in 4 seconds blows my mind. The game does a good job making the environments open enough giving you multiple paths to an objective without the need for objective marker or a mini-map. I never felt lost, but at the same time I never knew exactly how I was supposed to get somewhere. Naughty Dog really found the perfect balance of making the game feel open without making it an open world game.

I finished the game resonating with characters I originally hated, and hating characters I thought I loved, overall feeling like ****. It's a miserable story with the mechanics, environments, and acting to back it up. The game is a masterpiece. If you loved the first game and want to see how Naughty Dogs develops and punishes these characters for the choices they've made, play this now, before someone spoils it for you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, spent 2 days playing the game here what I have to say, the graphics and game play is good that deserves credit at the very least. They put a message but I didn't really care who if ellie was a lesbian. It was going cause problems for some but I was more invested in the story. I enjoy the beginning of the game seeing the outcomes of Joel decision but of course I gotten to that dreadful point in the game where joel just gave a bunch of strangers his name after savingthim. And they return the kindness of straight up murdering and butchering the character even though joel told ellie to not say his name so lightly anymore. But yet he gave his name to people he saved a d was crucified by them. One way to piss of fans. As I play afterward the only thing kept me going was to kill abby(Joel killer) but the more I play I realized that they were making ellie seemed more and more like a monster and it felt as if the game has lost it original idea that it was a survival zombie game. Then the next slip up I had to play abby and was force to watch joel death a second time making me want to kill her more even her action thought my time playing as ellie drive me to get revenge for ellie new family that was also getting killed off by abby
These next few hours of playing the game had me well killing abby every chance I got. Well when it was finally all said and done I was sick of the game, the story had put me off. I finally was at the point that I was able to avenge joel and abby new family but as the final moment where ellie had the upper hand she let abby go
Ellie let the murder go after killing all of the people that where responsible for killing joel. Let go of the person that actually killed him. I said **** this game and took it to my local game stop to get a better game.
For the graphics and the little actually game play gives it the + but due to a waist of time of a story and a journey that's at a - so I think a 3 out of 10 is about right. That story was ruin. The game made me feel like everything I did was bad. It force me to play a character I didn't like. And killed off a character for the sake of drama. For the last part it completely destroyed all of your efforts in the first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would not recommend this game be played by anyone. The original Last of Us was an excellent game. Easily a 8 or a 9 out of 10. Its greatest asset, of course, was its story. It was relatively simple; however, it was executed masterfully which resulted in a gripping and emotional experience that attached you to the characters and immersed you in the world. I had always thought that TLOU was always about parenthood. Specifically, the theme was that a parent will do absolutely anything to protect their child. Even if it meant giving up the world. TLOU2 on the other hand, is all about hate (according to the director himself). More specifically, it's about revenge, and how an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind (unless you're a buff woman, then you get to keep one). Honestly, the themes present in this game don't build upon the one's in the first game. TLOU took place in a bleak, violent post-apocalyptic world, but revenge was never present as a motif. TLOU was about parenthood and survival. Survival is still present in the sequel, but parenthood is mostly thrown to the wayside. Replacing it is revenge which is clumsily handled. In the first two hours, the beloved protagonist of the first game, Joel, is brutally murdered by some woman named Abby who's the daughter of a doctor that Joel killed in the first game. Abby cruelly tortures Joel before killing him and is even shown to take sadistic pleasure in doing it. Meanwhile, Ellie, Joel's adoptive daughter, watches as Abby kills Joel right in front of her. Abby spares Ellie, so Ellie chases down Abby to try and kill her to get revenge. After Joel's death, every player is think the same thing as Ellie: I'm going to kill that **** However, that never comes. At the end of the game, Ellie forgives and spares Abby's life (even though Ellie's already killed a bunch of Abby's friends). Abby also bites off Ellie's fingers and Ellie returns home to find that her girlfriend left her and she can't play guitar anymore. The game left me feeling empty. I wasn't satisfied or entertained by the story at all. I guess that's what they were going for, but what's the point of a game that makes you feel like **** Other games with unhappy endings (like Mad Father) usually at least entertain me or leave me with something interesting to think about. This game's theme was explained to me by my father when I was 5 years old. "Two wrongs don't make a right." I'm going to go replay the first game and pretend like this game doesn't exist. Okay, so the story sucks (which is a big problem considering how heavy the story is in this game), but it is still a video game, so is it fun to play? Yup. The gameplay is fun. Certainly an improvement over the first game, but it certainly isn't going to blow your mind. Unfortunately, while the game may be much longer than the first game, it lacks a multiplayer mode. I spent dozens of hours playing multiplayer in the first game, so it's a real shame that it's absent. It would've been a good opportunity to have some more fun with these game mechanics. At the very least, I don't need to renew my PS Plus membership. The gameplay still doesn't save this because this is a story focused game. The story sucks, so the gameplay isn't really able to support it. The graphics are great and the music's fine, but ultimately, this game isn't worth $60. The gameplay's fun, but the story is so bad that it poisons the whole experience. But I don't like to leave on a downer, so I've got some good games for you. Want a revenge story staring a young woman? Try out Tales of Bersersia. It's got a great story, great characters, great development, and it's 75% off on Steam until June 25th. You want a survival horror third person shooter? Try out Resident Evil 4. It's got shooting, roundhouse kicking, monsters, a goofy story, and oodles of replay value. It's only $20 on Steam and it's available on every console known to man. You want some stealth action gameplay? Go and play Metal Gear Solid V. There is literally like 7 ways you can sneak through each level, and you've got more stealth tools than you'll know what to do with! In short, don't play this game. Expand

Amazing game. For people who actually played it, I’m sure it they feel the same way. Not the people that didn’t even play it but simply gave it a low score just because there’s gay characters in it. Sad little people. I loved this game as much as the first one. Incredible. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are two things to say about this game.
First, it is interminably repetitive in terms of the gameplay, which is tight enough, but you can only watch the same shock value neck-stabbing animation about fifty times before you don’t really care anymore. Now it’s a good animation, and thematically you could say it speaks to something the devs want you to feel, but I say when that overly goofy bug-eyed death rattle becomes a major plot point that they want you to care about it loses all of it’s power.

This goes to the second thing, deeply, fundamentally wrong with this game. How endlessly frustrating and unsure of itself it is. Honestly, i love the accessibility options, as someone who makes use of them myself, any points this game gets goes to that attention so few devs pay. However, the idea that the resolution of the plot relies on, i **** you not, the ableist positioning that ellie can’t just learn to play her guitar left-handed, almost all of that goodwill is thrown straight into the trash. Abby can skirt the themes of the game and their consequences purely because she is bigger and stronger than ellie. This game is a paradox. It cares about differently abled players, and yet the narrative is more dismissive than anything i’ve seen lately. This game is not a masterpiece, it is a flawed, conflicted, contradictory exercise in excess stylized as realism.

I would like to stress i don’t care too much about the plot, the first was better but it wasn’t the best thing ever, so i don’t get the sheer rage over it not being the same game. Mechanically, this plays like early uncharted with a half broken controller. For every bit of smooth and satisfying gameplay there are just as many stiff and buggy moments where the game doesn’t detect very well especially when squeezing through walls.

The violence is great though, i guess. Also there’s something really problematic with the cloying attempt to get players to have similar reactions to Mel and Alice’s deaths respectively. Edge does not compensate for decent structure, no matter how many pregnant necks get stabbed with that same damn animation.

Borrow it from a friend, but don’t expect too much, certainly not a masterpiece.

The story was great many people don’t like how Joel died but I believe it served its purpose while also making you feel sad. I’ve also seen people complain that Joel and Tommy were out of character which caused Joel’s death but after spending many year in a more comfortable life style than they were in previously it makes sense that they would slip up. We see Ellie’s fighting for revenge and the toll it takes on her every time she takes the life of one of these people. It destroys her and I’m the end she loses everything in search of revenge. Now for the character of Abby. People mention that Abby get everything while Ellie’s life is destroyed but that’s not true. She loses all of her friends and is cast out of her home. They both lost so much and are both tired and done which is why Ellie does what she did at the end. I throughly enjoyed the game beginning to end. It was an incredible experience that will stick with me for years to come. This is my opinion and if you don’t like it then I’m sorry but I do not care. I had a great experience. Expand

I have absolutely no idea what Joel did to the writers of the sequel that gave them enough reason to turn a hardcore, intelligent survivor into an angsty teen who doubts decisions anyone with a brain knows are morally justified while simultaneously becoming incapable of making smart decisions in ANY aspect of his life. They actively disrespected his character in a way that not only makes the second game unplayable, it makes me wish I hadn't experienced it because I'm afraid I won't be able to go back to the first and see it in the same way anymore.

This game not only has issues on it's own - it ACTIVELY DESTROYS any nostalgia you had for the first.

Don't get me wrong, the gameplay isn't bad (it's pretty much identical to the first with a few minor improvements so this was to be expected) and the graphics are great, which you'd expect considering how long it took to make - that's why I'm still giving it 3 points, but in a series that was literally defined by the story, when you take that away you're losing 70% of the game.

I ask anyone disagreeing to answer this: have you ever heard anyone recommend the first game because of the gameplay or the graphics? Or did you hear them tell you how amazing the story was and how they didn't want to spoil anything for you because it was so amazing?

The story in 2 is a dumpster fire of trying too hard to be deep. It's a 13 year old emo kid writing bad poetry convinced it's the deepest thing anyone has ever thought before.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great game, great story. A great trick in swapping models in promotional trailers. Thanks to that, Joel's death was a huge shock and I really wanted a revenge. For me great job showing how revange and things that Ellie make change her. In the moment that she admitts to Dina that she made Nora talk was like admitting: I became a monster but I dont want to loose you. And the second character and her motives also great: from the beginning here we see how she is blinded with the wish of revenge and how revenge didnt change anything (still dreaming about the death of her father, loosing friends and love because of revenge wish and brutally killing Joel). I hated her at the beggining of the game but then I even started to like her. And the moment on the farm with Ellie and Dina: when I saw Ellie trying to sneak out in the middle of the night I was like: I love you Ellie but what the hell are you doing? Why? You want to loose everything for revenge? Stop killing. And in that moment I was tired of killing. Thats why I can understand the last fight with Abby. For me great psyhological story with many emotions.I will remember it long time and for sure play it more then twice.Dont know why people see in that political story.. Seriously: where? Because Ellie is a lesbian? We knew it from the DLC for the first part and for me it was sure that they will use it in the second. The character of Lev alias Lily? There’s a lot of things to considerate when you talk about of a game like this, obviously is hard to get a good score when you are out of your safe zone, but there’s the magic. Anyone can say that The Last of Us Part II is a bad game, because is not. I’m pretty sure that everyone likes to control Ellie, the gameplay is just amazing, and yeah, it’s true, maybe some of us thing that despite the humanity of Abby, she should be dead right now but Ellie wasn’t able to do it. We expect for something else maybe on a DLC or on another part for the game.
