Excellent gameplay, crappy story (nothing make sense specially if you played the first one) and destruction of characters just because they want to add "that" ideology that is destroying a lot of entertainments lately, I am officially an ex-fan, a shame

I felt sad too, but as the major storyline throughout both games has been about redemption & forgiveness, it feels fitting. Incredible game.

People will try and tell you if you dislike the game you are a bigot or anti-lgbt. They will dismiss any complaints about the story line as illegitimate. The game puts unneeded focus on a new character that most people will just not care about and the game doesn't really give us any reason to care for.

Expand

Full of pain and sorrow. Full of hopelessness and bleakness. And it's utterly brilliant for it. It is a pure example of games as art. It reminds us to enjoy what we have and remember what we have lost. It's beautiful, terrifying, immersive and haunting. And is one of the best games I have ever played. Expand

The gameplay feels like its half a decade old, disappointingly the moments you find yourself actually feeling challenged and enjoying an encounter usually turn out to be entirely scripted, meaning you spend 20 minutes fighting a "mini boss" just to realize the only reason the encounter was difficult at all is because you are meant to lose regardless of how you perform. doesn't exactly feel rewarding to find out you would've gotten the same ending to a fight if you didnt touch your controller and let the monster beat you in 3 seconds. Storywise I feel like the game played its biggest hand to early (joels death) the ellie/joel oartnership is something that really made the first game special and taking that away was a mistake in my opinion, That being said the story that was told was really engaging and interesting and took you from playing this revenge mission to learning about the motives and feelings of the "enemy" and really bringing into question "who really is the bad guy?"

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first several hours are absolutely stunning. Insane graphics, well developed gameplay and your two beloved characters back together. But after Joel gets killed the game takes a turn not only for the worse, but for the worst. The new characters are stale and you don't feel any bonding with them whatsoever. You simply do not care about them. Dina, your new gf? I hoped for her to just die until the end. There was nothing likeable about her except for her willingness to support Ellie on her revenge trip. Jesse? Nice guy but gets shot in the stupidest way ever. Owen - the guy you begin to like and understand when being forced to play half the game with exactly that character that had just murdered Joel in cold blood in the most brutal way? Gets killed before switching to Abby, playing her worth the knowledge that this dude will eventually get stabbed. Lev, the former scars girl/guy who ends up with Abby? No connection until the end. The storytelling is thin and had no density considering the enormous length of the game. Additionally, I never knew when the end would finally come. You prepare yourself to finish the game just to have another 5h filler element, tackling a problem that never feels to be of interest or in the characters interest. The ultimate ending is non logical and leaves you shaking your head and asking yourself: why the eff did I just struggle myself through that game when story wise all that was happening was that Joel died and then you stumbled across a world (albeit beautifully looking) with faceless and blindly interchangeable characters. As mentioned in the beginning - the game starts strong but turns out to be a long and repetitive story that struggles to build up the atmosphere and bonding abilities from the first part, but gives you no greater goal to strife for, no character development (rather the opposite) and have you play your hated arch enemy for 50% of the game without giving you any feeling of understanding of getting close to liking that character. I wished for Ellie to simply kill Abby in the end, but even that wish didn't come true and leaves you completely up in the air. The feeling of utter disappointment reminds me of the ending of mass effect 3. Expand

Part 2 takes everything you know and then throes it out the window. Joel all of a sudden trusts a bunch of stangers and gets killed in the most awful way after that the story gets worse and then worse before you finally get to then end for the worst ending in gaming history. Sure tbe visuals, the gameplay is decent and so is the audio but who cares when the story is this crap with naughty Dog seemingly hell bent on pushing an agenda no one cares about. We just wanted a story that made sense but that was too difficult to deliver. In any case once you play through this **** you will want something to clean the bad taste away from your mouth. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok, almost done with my 2nd playthrough..but I've seen the ending maybe eight times by now..so I get the idea.

    Negatives first:

1.) I've seen some others say this and I agree..this should have been Last of Us 3..if there was going to be such a thing. I can deal with Joel meeting a similar fate..but ALL of these new characters should have been built up way more prior.

Flashbacks and perspective absolutely does help..but having them not come across as random people would have been much better in the justification for such a BOLD move, imo!

It's not just Abby, who has some redeemable qualities like so many others say..it's not..but she could have been given way more personality.

Now, maybe they'll fill in the blanks with the show that's due out. Maybe, maybe not and while I PERSONALLY like/agree with the ending..they didn't do themselves a lot of favors to the general fan.

2.) The dogs. Game-wise..it's a good tactic..but I'd rather they just kept using mines..or turrets..or cameras. Yeah, that's generic as hell...but generic beats me having to kill any more of them. Bravo to the dog that was mo-capped for this, btw!

3.) How Tommy/Joel were initially trapped.

It would have made a lot more sense if Abby was actually the one that saved them..and then they had to follow her to where she was staying.

Whether you agree with what Joel did was 'right'/justified..that's up to you..but they DID save her.
Also..I would have liked to hear ANY back/forth between her/Joel about the elephant in the room.
    Same with Ellie/Abby..but especially Joel/Abby.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Everything else was GREAT.

The combat is SO MUCH better, visuals, the flashbacks were extremely well done, sfx/voices/music, graphics. The photomode was nice..all the new random options were fantastic.

You can change the controls (which I didn't) is always a plus

The new factions were cool..especially the seraphites.

The ending...a lot of people wanted VENGEANCE. Well, what was killing Abby going to do and more importantly..do you think Joel would want her to do that? Why'd she go there at all you say?
Well, she obviously felt one thing and her mind was eventually changed at the end. No one else has done that before?

Also...if he had to do it all over again..I know he said he'd do just that..but I don't know..maybe knocking them out or pushing the doctors out of the way would have been a smarter move on his part?

Anyways...I do not think Joel would want Ellie to finish Abby. No matter how much hate she has..how much hate you might have for her..and again..just projecting here..but for how much Joel is shown to be softened in all the flashbacks..I just don't see it.

Others said it should have been a choice to kill Abby. Well, that wouldn't really work if Abby/Lev were the main characters in TLOU 3 (which I wouldn't recommend (at this point))?!
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Basically..I think this game/story will age a lot better once the show is out (to a varying degree).

Underdeveloped/seemingly random characters and dogs..those are my issues (currently).

Oh and the stadium the Wolves are at...don't know if it was the Huskies/Seahawks..that looked INCREDIBLE.

... and nice job of hiding all the cards/coins!

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In closing..this story is ALL about perspective. Who is the hero? Who is the villain? If this person does that thing to that person..does it catch up to that person 15 years from now in that way..or this way? Was that person justified? If not, why not?

It did a great job creating/furthering the conversation and I appreciate that. There are no villains..no heroes..just the person/people you empathize with more than the other. 8.25 out of 10

People aren't using their brains when discussing this game. TLOU2 is game that talks about violence and revenge being the parts that makes us animals and how we as society need to think critically and not get caught in this horrible cycle. It's not political, and Abby is a good character, literally there's nothing bad about the characters being gay or not, it just shows how there's a big portion of gamers who need to get their **** together and stop being narrow-minded and intolerant.

The Last of Us: Part II has some very smooth satisfying gameplay, excellent sound design, attention to detail, detailed gory violence, and some great art direction. The story however, really weighs it down.

It feels genuinely pretentious at points. It insists it's profound and compelling but the average gamer can see right through it. 7/10 only for the gameplay, graphics, and art

    1. TLOU 2 is simply boring and pretends to be deep but in reality the story feels half-baked.
    2. The gameplay isn't anything new, if you played the first one, you already played this one (int has some QoL improvements but nothing groundbreaking).
    3. On the "bright" side, the game does have nice graphics and made me feel intrigued in the kind of graphics we should expect from next gen.

Shame on ND, they had everything to tell a great tale but writers decided to take the wrong direction with the story.

Awesome gameplay, graphics and music, 10/10 on that department, the story tho, it is not that great, it is a basic story of revenge, Abby's side of the story is too long and it should not interrupt the flow of Ellie's story like that, it kills the pacing, plus Abby's story has a lot of filler, which make the game suffer. Plus, we can't fully like Abby, she killed Joel, so we will never like her, but at the end I agreed with Ellie's decision, but still playing like a character we do not care about is not fun. It does not deserve the hate it gets, but it surely does not deserve to be called a masterpiece, I give it a solid 7/10, there is worse things with better score, so it should not be that low. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a complete mess of a story. The writing, the pacing, and the excessive switching between characters, flashbacks, and timelines show how poorly this was executed. The characters, who we knew and loved in the first game, are butchered in their sequel. Worse, we're expected to care about these new, yet uninteresting ones, that are shoved upon our throats for the second half of the game. Apart from it's messy plot and disengaging characters, it was mostly the immersive combat, amazing graphics, and lengthy narrative that lifted this game for it's entire worth.

Ellie is no longer the defiant, joke-loving girl we adored in the first. No, she's taken a darker and more brutal path towards the concept of vengeance. Evidently, this makes Ellie a dry and uninteresting person to play as. Contrary to the trailers, we only get to play Joel for less than 5 minutes throughout the whole game, and his death is already shown before we even get our bearings. As for Dina, her character is alright. However, her relationship with Ellie felt as if the LGBT+ agenda was more emphasized, instead of having actual chemistry and character development between the two. It's as if Naughty Dog wanted to push the boundaries of socio-political inclusiveness with this one. For the amount of time I got to spend with Abby, I found myself engaging with her character a little but not enough to actually care. Abby and her crew had some interesting parts to them, yet their roles and characters soon degraded throughout the story’s progression. As for Owen, he was probably the worst of them all. Besides his creepy personality and confusing relationship with Abby, it felt like Owen served no real purpose in the game. None of them did. It’s as if the crew was mainly used for Abby’s character development, so the player would hopefully “like” her and see things from her perspective. I get the whole moral, but it just didn’t work for this one.

Storywise, the entire thing is a jumbled mess. The timelines, the transitions, and the flashbacks are excessive and suspense killing. As you play, you will find yourself jumping timelines and characters, switching between Abby and Ellie for the initial part of the game, and then finding yourself in a random flashback minutes later. Jumpscares are common but they lack suspense to build upon. As a result, everything becomes so cliche and predictable that you’ll eventually get bored. Gameplay-wise, it’s really good. The combat is well designed and the crafting system is like it used to be. However, there were some limitations I encountered when using the skill/pill system. Although it offers multiple branches for a different set of skills, It seems that each skill branch has to unlock it’s first skill before the second one could be. Therefore, you can’t spend pills on one skill before unlocking the one previous to it. As for combat, human NPC’s are really smart. Even at moderate difficulty, I constantly found myself being flanked, cornered, or flushed by enemies. Hounds will sniff you out if you don’t keep moving. There isn’t enough time to hide in bushes or covers because enemies will always keep you on your toes. Evidently, this renders stealth approaches difficult to execute.

In addition to your common runners, clickers, and bloaters from the previous game, Part 2 introduces a new collection to their zombie arsenal. For starters, Stalkers are too quiet to be seen in listen mode, and they’ll pounce from the shadows if you get too close. Shamblers are similar to bloaters. However, they excrete gas explosions at close range instead of throwing them like a bloater does. There are also zombies that hide in fungal growths in the walls, waiting for the chance to attack. During the later part of Abby’s gameplay, you’ll encounter something entirely different and much deadlier.

I respect Neil Druckmann for approaching Part 2 differently. Unfortunately, that approach never really delivered. Abandoning where the game left off, Naughty Dog forgets what made The Last of Us memorable. Instead, the characters we knew and loved were unfairly butchered and destroyed in the sequel, and in return, we’re forced to familiarize ourselves with new and loathsome ones. Although the combat and gameplay was a treat to experience, and the crafting system encouraged resourcefulness and practicality, the game’s messy writing, story progression, and lack of believability for it’s characters drags players along it’s lengthy narrative. Not only did the Last of Us Part 2 discredit its predecessor, it failed to carry whatever point it had in the beginning. Consequently, I don’t believe this game deserves the exaggerated threes and zeroes it earned. believed it deserves a 10 for compelling gameplay, graphics, length, and combat. However, minus 4 for choice of story, bringing it down to a strong 6.

The problem came in around the half way point of the game where there's a sudden character switch at an important point in the story. This leaves two issues. First, this screws up the pacing of the game. The timeline started going everywhere, backwards, then forwards, then backwards, without any real push to the main story line, making it less coherent and focused. Secondly, no one really cares nor wants to play as this newcomer, and the game REALLY forces you to like and sympathize with this character, which of course gives the opposite effect and makes you dislike playing as the character even less. By the end of the game, it became a total drag to even play and finish. The story, and the game, gradually feels pointless and exhausting. That might be the intention of the devs, but I can't say I could rate a game that actively making me dislike it as time go on a good game.
Gameplay is decent. Graphics and voice acting are phenomenon. It's a shame that the most important aspect of the game, the story, is cheapened by shock value, emotional manipulation, poor writing, and worst of all, moral preaching. One of the best things about the first game was the moral ambiguity of the characters. There was no good or bad, right or wrong, just desperate people. In the last of us 2, all of that is gone. There are now clear black and white, with plenty of moral preaching and guilt tripping being thrown around, when you are NOT given any choices throughout the game. It comes off especially self-righteous, given the first game was done so well on this front.

This is a story driven game, with a REALLY inconsistent story that looks like it’s written by a 15yo with no knowledge of how to tell a story, at all.
The game makes puts Ellie in a quest for revenge which ends up in a **** poorly written ending basically saying “reVeNge is BaD” after a horrible antagonist kills Joel.
Also, it pushes certain unlikeable characters down your throat, and even makes you play with the antagonist on what seems like an effort to understand “her reasons” for killing Ellie’s fatherly figure.
Needless to say, this whole segment of a game was a damn chore.
It’s such a pity, since TLOU1 was, arguably, one of the best if not the best story driven game available for ps3 at the time, and this one falls extremely short due to crappy storytelling and inconsistencies.
Naughty dog deserves the not-so-good user reviews they got for this game, and it’s definitely not worth buying at all, if you’re looking for a good story driven game.

Visuals, gameplay, sound and VO performances are all top tier in my opinion.

Story is erratic and below the standard of what we expect from this developer and series.

The first game was very nice, atmospheric, and believable. One of the best intro for a game in existence.

This second game is... featuring genderless, ugly, disgusting females. I have really no idea what was the exact reason doing so, but yeah, that's a thing in this flick. Also featuring a gáy lesbian jewish pregnant chick. Yeah, because nothing describes a surviving post-apocalyptic

Also featuring a gáy lesbian jewish pregnant chick. Yeah, because nothing describes a surviving post-apocalyptic horror best, like featuring LGBT propaganda all throughout the game.

Don't get me wrong, the game is still fun, combat is exactly the same as before. But yeah... the ugliness (both inside and outside) really tanks the whole experience. Game of The Year my áss.

No tengo queja en el apartado técnico y jugable. Pero respecto a su historia, tiene muchas incoherencias narrativas y no me gusta que me digan cómo pensar, por lo que no estoy nada satisfecho con su agenda política forzada.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off let me say the game Play was awesome, The graphics, control, and UI/crafting was far better then the first game.
I would have love to give it a 10, but the story was just God awful.

    1. Not as open world as it said, The world was plenty big enough...but in one direction really. If you went through the wrong door or dropped down at the wrong time you couldn't go back...so many times I didn't save I missed out on safes, and other loot because of this fact. You should be able to back track if needed.
    2. if you stealth killed an enemy, the others wouldn't know, but if you killed one away from the others with a punch or knife all the others would be alerted. Also some of the clickers would see you a lot of the times if you were in sight duck down and being quiet.
    3. Killing off your main protagonist was a very dumb move. Sure he did some awful things but they all did even Abby, And Abby had years to find out why it happen and cool down. Ellie's rage was warranted Abby's was not. Also taking two of Ellie's fingers was just dumb. I hope they can save this game with the the third one. Naughty Dog really miss the mark on the story big time.

Game play awesome, story not so much. I Think Naughty Dog forgot what maid The Last of Us one so big....Both Joel & Ellie.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
