Some people say that the motivations for the character, and the overall objective for the character actions are uncompelling. Nobody can enjoy that, it's sad and people get hurt and there are very rare if any uplifting moments, its a very dark and depressing tone. It somewhat reminds me of Ran by Kurosawa. ¿Is it a depressing and sad film were people die left and right in random ways? Sure, but it is still a masterpiece at representing desperation and grief. This game makes an objective of making you feel bad and in that objective it is very succesful. A story can be good, with good characters and not enjoyable given its tone. I think the director took a risk and told a devisive story and for me it worked. People were expecting a game similar to the original and this is not it. It is still great though and it will keep you thinking about the consequences of your actions. In terms of feel the closer I can think of is spec ops the line, it has an oppresive atmosfere. I think this is a masterpiece and game of the year for me. Expand

    BUT

The story is very basic in writing and scope. Though it took me around 21 hours to complete if the padding was removed it would likely be less than 1/2 that. On top of that the player has zero influence over the story and has no choices in the game what-so-ever that affect anything. Your playthrough will be exactly the same as everyone else outside of combat.

The characters also act contrary to how they are set up during pivotal moments. I won't go into details as not to add spoilers but the choices the characters make are completely against what they would do based upon their other actions and motivations. If I was rating only on characters and story It would be a sub 5 score.

As a whole package I settled on a 6 as what I feel is fair. It saddens me as I loved the first and this could have been an 8+ with some changes to the narrative and characters but will now just be a below average game I will forget completely in the future.

This is a great game. But I can somewhat see the problem people have with it, aside from the childish trolling reviews.

    The mental transition from:

    A) hating a major character (and not wanting to be manipulated by the game)

    to

    B) accepting that you understand (not like) the character's motivation while seeing that (all) the characters – being blinded by hatred – just can’t act otherwise. And therefore the game doesn't give you the option to change their actions.

... that’s a highly risky way to tell a story. Especially with such beloved characters. But it's also a real sign of creative integrity and of a bold vision.

If the player can’t take this step of acceptance (a major theme of the game itself), the game fails. It will take you out of the immersion–which is so important to appreciate the game. That's why the story leak was a huge problem. The game needs context and the player needs to let the plot – and his own anger – sink in. It's a brilliant mechanism that mirrors the events of the game on a meta-level.

The game knows that the player is in a moral dilemma. And – if you let the masterful crafted world and characters sink in – it takes you on a cathartic trip (which doesn’t work if you are not willing to accept the story).

I applaud Naughty Dog for the brave decision to go with this. I loved how they got me to the point, where I went with the emotions of the characters EVEN knowing that this meant acting against my personal choices (that derived from my knowledge of the story as an external viewer). And that I, therefore, routed for the catharsis of all the protagonists.

Risky but (therefore) great storytelling, if you are willing to accept what the game is doing.

The trailers were very misleading as to what the experience would be. You could have made it clear who you would be playing as without giving the story away. It would have been an avoid, had this been known.

The structure of the story is very jarring, there are large sections that are just filler. The main couple in the game have disappointing chemistry, compared to Ellie’s interactions with other named characters, her gf is very wooden. SJW theme is pushed a little hard at the beginning but this becomes a non issue after an hour, it is a shame they felt the need themselves to make a big deal of Ellie being gay rather than just treating it as a matter of fact straight away.

Playing as the other 2nd main character is just trash. This is a game, it’s meant to be fun. No one wanted this. The first big death in the game, was okay with me but I understand due to the advertising and people’s deep investment why they were angry.

My main issue is with the writing. It’s very obvious that there was a message they were trying to convey. But the themes they present are not exactly ground breaking, humans capable of evil, we are all the villain in someone else’s story, revenge bad. This is a game for adults, this is not groundbreaking stuff. If you are going to prop a whole game up on these themes. Deliver it well, concisely and nail The characters and arcs.

Weirdly the arc on the hellish 2nd character is a hell of a lot better than Ellie, but the character is just essentially a ****. Combined with the wrongs done earlier, I’d be surprised if 1/10 people managed to connect with this character. It was awful and demotivating.

Ellie’s arc is just a total mess. Key decision at the end made zero sense and really made no sense at that specific moment. No one would have had that revelation at that point.

I could go on, but ultimately the story feels like a story not worth telling. The characters are inconsistent, there are parts where it’s just like, this is not how human beings work. All of this could have been forgiven, but they clearly made the narrative the main crux and message of the game and that falls very, very flat.

You can have a layered, you can have bleak, you can have a message. But don’t **** it up and sit there like a child and tell people it’s what you take out of it, like this is some kind of high art and not a story that would have gotten you laughed out of any book or film publisher In the world.

This game betrays all the characters by forcing them into a petty story of revenge that at many times forces them to act out of character in order to serve the narrative that ND wants to convey, even if it doesnt make sense for them to act the way they do.

The gameplay hasnt really evolved from the old game, and the heavy focus on human enemies robs it of the interesting setup that the old game have.

    The graphics look great.

Just by all of this i would give the game a 4 or 5, but given the drama on ND both in terms of workplace and the obvious dumb ideologies the CEO/Vice President has, and how they have permeated into the game, plus the clear bias that Sony has against other games on what they are not allowed to do while ND is allowed to do way more than that, i will give it a 2.

Is clear this will be the last ND game i will be buying, and if sony keeps screwing up, even maybe the last console i buy from them

Böyle bir cesareti bir de Hideo Kojima Death Stranding oyununu yaparak göstermişti ama sığır yine sığır olduğu için insanlar o oyuna da oynamadan laf etmişti. And please pay no attention to the trolls, which not only didn't play but can also not deal with feelings. They refuse to see anything past their preconceived notion that the game is bad because the one thing they didn't want to happen, happens. If the plot hadn't been leaked and they got to experience the game instead of reading it out of a **** script and watched a few scenes without context, maybe they would feel the gut-wrenching emotions this game provides. It's through actually playing the mission parts and being in danger and listening to seemingly unimportant dialogue that you get to like the characters and, even if you don't, there's no way empathy doesn't tell you EVERY story has two sides and humans aren't 100% good or bad. Joel was always going to be a villain in someone's eyes, we were just endeared to him first. This is not about taking sides, it's about understanding that nobody is a hero in a time of desperate need and every action you take has consequences that might shape your future and your relationship with those who love you. This game has amazing atmosphere. The environments and sound design are truly phenomal. Also the voice acting and animations are really good. There are more parts to a game though. Lets start with gameplay. Overall the gameplay is fine, but after a long time with not a lot of change in it it gets too repetitive. A lot of encounters start feeling the same. Then the characters. While the characters are really well voice acted and have great animations, they are a very flat/empty. We aren't given a reason to care about them, which also makes anything that happens to them less impactful. The story part of the game is the biggest mess. The story is mediocre, very much unlike the first game, and has serious pacing issues. Sometimes it skips parts that could have been interesting, but often it is too slow and is dripfeeding you small bits of story. But the biggest problem is delivery. The order in which the story is told and the way it is done is incredibly jarring and is a real detriment to the experience. Also the bold decision they made to have you play approx. half the game as Abby (while also advertising the game with only Joel and Ellie) has not worked out at all. At the start I actively did not want to play as her as the game has only painted her as a bad person and has not given the player any reason to like her. All things considered I still enjoyed the game, but not as much as I should've with a Naughty Dog game and it especially did not live up to the emotional level The Last of Us 1 had.

Amazing game. The world building, state of the art presentation is something that haven’t been seen in video games before. But what you take away from this game is the story. It leaves space for interpretation and and it makes video games evolve and mature. This is something no other medium could do and I’m so happy Naughty Dog have the capacity and resources to do it.

Nearly the whole game is move to a medium to large sized area, search the area for resources, spend another 10 minutes wandering around the area finding the hidden exit. This game had me so frustrated with the boredom and mind numbing nothingness of it all I am actually proud of myself for finally finishing it. But I had to finish it, ive played the first game 5 times, that game was balanced , the areas you search only took one or two minutes and you moved on, combat and puzzles were more frequent and infinently more satisfying.
As I moved through the highly detailed but miserable looking world of THOU2 I was very rarely taken back by the visuals, thanks to the gross and horribly thick Grain/film filter pasted over the screen. The game looks ugly even at the times it shouldn't, considering all the accessibility options , why was there no option to remove the horrid Grain filter. Which brings me to my next point, WTF is there no option to adjust the Dead Zone for aiming. The dead zone in the game is HUGE,. Even as I was begging for some combat to break up the monotonous of this game I knew it would be clunky and unsatisfying after every encounter, but, barly 10% of the game is combat.
Lastly but defiantly not least in the Story, oh man , what a joke, what an absolute blunder. Its just ridiculous, its messy, motivations and consequences are just stupid. Obviously cant explain why, cause spoilers, but this is easily the stupidest story ive ever experienced and I finished Death Stranding.
Some will say no game deserve a 3 , especially a game that has had so much money thrown at it and has few bugs and stuff. But IMO thats exactly the reason this game deserves a 3, literally the only things that works in this game are the things money can buy, graphics and bug fixes. Where ever talent is required like in creating good gameplay and a good story this game fails miserably. I actively hated playing this game. A 5 is a game that entertains me ever if it dosent blow me away and anything lower is a game that repels me. If this wasnt the sequel to my favorite game of the last generation I would have stopped playing about 5 hours in.

Tech wise and on the gameplay front this game is a step up from part 1. The story is where it falls short.
The story is somewhat weirdly paced and is telling 1 and a half stories. They could have cut the game after the first climax at 90% and wrap it in a nice resolution, but then they restart it and are leaving some things in an unsatisfying way.

I loved the story of the first game and was very excited for the sequel to see how the writers would confront Ellie with the true about what Joel did in Denver. I have no idea how the writing for this game went so far off the rails. Probably the most disappointing sequel since SW9. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In a few words, this was a game of missed opportunities.
The positives were the beautiful visuals in some unique locations. The cinematic cut scenes at the end of most chapters were also exceptional. Those were the two things that kept me engaged.

    So then there's the negatives...

The gameplay which felt repetitive. Human zone, infected zone, scavenge zone. Repeat. Then all the time spent in Seattle. So many beautiful locations and variety when the game wasn't in Seattle. But 60% of the game was hotel lobbies, coffee shops, streets and commercial buildings. No notable gameplay mechanics or crafting options introduced over last of us 1. Scavenging was unrewarding but it felt like I would be at a disadvantage if I didn't. 1 pill here, 1 bullet there. Killing humans with the shotgun, mines and bow was fun though.

The story. I actually liked the plot point of Abby killing Joel. Seeing Joel from a different perspective (that he did kill someone elses father and at the expense of humanities cure). But the execution was missed. Ellie became a moody unlikable person. Her story was 'revenge for Joel'. Abby on the other hand was much more interesting up until the end of seattle day 2. Then the scar refugee angle felt weak. Felt missed to not have her weave in and out of Ellies events in Seattle. Her ending - a random capture was also a disappointment. Santa Barbra, while beautiful, felt rushed. Less time in seattle and more time there (or just anywhere else) would have been more fun. Just more varied. **** Seattle. It just kept going and going and going. Can you tell I was over Seattle by the end? Just take me somewhere else! Please! No more hotels!

Hopefully Naughty Dog choose to kick off a new IP after this

Sadly I do not feel writing, pacing and the way story was told was very well done and simply turned game unlikable fot me, For a story heavy game like this with some heavy subjects I also found this something that made it impossible for me to rate game all that highly. This game takes its concept a bit too seriously to provide enjoyment at the same rate as other popular games. The reviews on this game are OUT OF CONTROL, and I really don't see what all the commotion is about so far. Are misogynists/incels upset with strong female/LBGTQ+ protagonism? Did Naughty Dog pull an SJW with the story somewhere? I haven't reached any such controversial part of the story yet, and while I don't want spoilers, I don't plan on finishing this game soon because I am at a *really* slow part of the game right now, and I don't know why, but playing this game makes me feel a bit groggy. It's not that there isn't enough action or drama in the game; I think the problem lies in its realism-aspect spacing out the action and drawing-out the world-building/atmosphere too much.

I admit I *used* to hold misogynistic views, but I don't hold them anymore; it no longer bothers me to see strong female protagonists fighting societal norms, though, I think a part of me is still depressed and has not yet completely accepted that these things are OK. If you're thinking about playing this game, it's best to be completely over these kinds of things, because it feels like this game rubs it in your face at times. This game went from playing as an ex-marine badass father to a strong, fiercely-independent lesbian woman in her 20-somethings. These characters have *completely* different socio-political demographic overlaps (outside of the group of people who are fine-with and can enjoy both.) I feel like the misogynistic/incel fans who liked the first game for the wrong reasons (perceived themes of male dominance, white supremacy, among other unscrupulous ideas) came to the sequel carrying their same socio-political expectations, and that must be one of the reasons why the user-reviews on this game are so polarized.

One thing I don't understand at all is the fact that the professional critics are giving this game an aggregate score of 96/100. That score is the territory of some of the best video games ever made, and while The Last Of Us 2 isn't terrible, I think it's definitely not one of the best games ever made. Let's be honest here: TLOU2 is a solid 85/100. Not terrible; in fact pretty good but not one of the all-time bests either.

I also enjoyed the first The Last of Us game, mainly based on the characters, story and world. Sadly, I can't say the same thing about the The Last of Us Part 2.

The Last of Us Part 2 has destroyed the franchise for me. I did not like what they did with the characters and narrative. And, unfortunately, I never thought the gameplay was all that enjoyable in the first game and it's mostly the same here. It wears thin for me. I just don't find it all that fun. So with a terrible narrative and characters, and average gameplay, all I'm left with is a very pretty game. But that isn't enough to make me want to continue playing a game. Most high end games these days look pretty damn amazing. Games now have to actually be enjoyable if they want to stand out and be held in great esteem by gamers.

Another thing I have to mention is that the game has very obvious woke messaging throughout it. I am so tired of being beat over the head constantly with this same political ideology in every form of entertainment media. And given the fact that this game will likely be played by many young people who aren't aware of the propaganda they are being fed it amounts to a kind of brainwashing. I think this is despicable and should be called out. Most gamers do not want any kind of overt modern political messaging in their games.

So, in the end I disliked the game for several major reasons: the poor narrative and characters, the average gameplay that I don't get much enjoyment from, and the fact the game is being used as a vehicle for specific political messaging. If Naughty Dog returns to what made games like Uncharted 2 so great I will gladly buy and play their next game. But if they continue down this path of being more concerned about shoehorning their political agenda into a game, instead of making sure it's a great game that can be enjoyed by a wide range of gamers, I will be avoiding their future releases.

LToU 2 lives up to the original on all counts. At first I was a bit tentative about it. The first few hours felt like a bit of a rehash of the original in a lot of ways, but then the game shifted gears and took off. People hollering about plot holes need to use their imagination and understanding of the human condition. Nothing seems out of character. I think a lot of those comments are simply forced onto it to hide the fact that they've got some personal anti-sjw agenda. Why do they hide it.? Because they know, deep down, that they should be ashamed of themselves for being closed-minded hate mongers.

Same goes for gameplay which at times in the middle sagged a bit. But when it was good, it was awesome. The sheer brutality of the fights made winning them give a kind of primal satisfaction. And playing as the new character was fun too, though their fighting style was more Joel like. That made the tactics of tackling similar situations with Ellie and the new character different enough to give the game a dose of freshness. And loved the rope mechanics! Wish there were more uses for it and more puzzles with it even at the risk of making the situation more contrived. Their were times when the suspension of disbelief was questioned a bit, though that's probably a complaint only because the game has set such high standards of realism for itself. Overall a great experience. Recommended for all except for those who dislike violent imagery in games Expand

Я не люблю ЛГБТ сообщества, потому что это неактуально и мерзко для моей страны. Эта пропаганда затмевает все происходящее в игре.

I dont like gomosexual propoganda because it is not actual and awful for my country and people. This propagande shadows everything in this game. DONT BUY!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Last of Us 2 is a Double edge Game on the one hand I loved returning to this world, the character and the game play. But on the other the story has character development, pacing and story problems that take you out of the game leaving you empty. TLoU Introduced a new kind of Zombie game with interesting enemies. NOT JUST fighting Zombie but the other humans struggling to survive. The first game to a broken man that cared about nothing in the whole world, introduces him to a young girl that sheltered optimistic and hopeful, even being born into this desolate situation. Through a story of challenges struggle, survival, these two characters grow and change to become like father and daughter. Till ultimately Joel will give up the world for Ellie. The last of us 2 improves so much Graphics are perfection and I had 0 glitches or problems. Game play was a return of survival and fighting with both Ellie & Abby feeling different. The addition to jump, dodge and go prone were all quality changes. The problem is the story and not that it isn't explained it is but it is poorly done. The game us rushed and feels to long at the same time. Jumping back and forth from Abby to Ellie and flashbacks is all to much. Ellie does not grow in any way and accomplishes nothing. Abby changes so suddenly that it is impossible to care. The game just drags and then comes to a compete stop when Dinna and Ellie are back around Jackson in a almost dreamlike Existence with their child JJ. Which she leaves for teally no reason. Then suprise fireflies are still out there somewhere, Ravages or something another group no explanation or development. In conclusion there is little to care about by the end. Most of the characters are dead, what is left are traumatized, beaten and broken, and even left hating each other. Expand

it is so sad to see such an emotional tale being completely misunderstood and destroyed in the sequel, the game play is dated and has not changed even the slightest from the original game. graphics is fantastic and it makes everything more sad for a game with such a potential.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great graphics. The only good thing I can say about this game.

Very repetitive gameplay: Too few enemies, too much looting, some parts are boring and very slow paced.

Poorly structured campaign: When you're getting to the best part with Ellie, you have to play as Abby for 10 hours. It absolutely breaks the climax.

Bad character development: People in this game just feel not real and they have no depth. All the new characters are just forgettable.

Story is simply terrible: Lots of plot holes, weird character behavior, specially at the end. Just not what fans expected of this sequel.

I will never understand the cheap death of Joel, why Abby wants to be Yara and Lev's best friend, why Ellie spares Abby in the end, etcetera.

It's a pity that this game could've been so much more. They tried to make a surprising story, and it is. For the worse.

6/10 for the graphics and some good parts (mainly hospital zone and Rat King).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The graphics are beautiful and the voice acting is great.

The gameplay is so-so at best. Moving around the environment is somewhere between functional and uninspiring. Combat is decent for ranged attacks but limited trash for melee, feeling more like something that happens in front of you rather than something you are taking part in.

Finally the story is a muddled mess. It's not terrible but not great. I feel like a better arrangement and pacing would make for a good story but alas it turns out meh. Also, the people writing the story needed to have a much better idea of the gameplay because it leads to some real clashes between what the character says and what the player has experienced.

One example that comes to mind is after a LONG gameplay segment fighting through a long section in a building then through a tunnel network where dina is actively saving your ass you finally reach an old theater and Dina is tired and admits she might be pregnant. Ellie rips into her for essentially being a burden and i'm sitting there thinking WTF are you talking about? She just helped you fight a fricking army......

If you have time to kill and cash to burn I would pick the game up. It's not bad, just not great.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yes, game is visually beautiful, but it is soooooo boring. No idea who wrote a script, but that person did his job poorly. Nothing is explained. Plot twists are cheap and childish. Characters and NPC don't evoke any emotions but dissapointment in developers. When we kill a pregnant woman we should feel guilt. Instead there is nothing. You kill hundreds of people. You play as serial psycho killer. Not a woman who is trying to survive. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some complain about LGBTQ+ representation, some complain about having to play as a muscular woman. Those people are obviously ridiculous.

But then there are those who say that the message of the game is that "revenge is bad." It's, uh, way more complex than that. You don't just play as Abby to show that everyone is the hero of their own story, and that Ellie or Joel could be seen as the villain in someone else's story. You also play as Abby to see what it looks like when someone believes their violence is more justified than someone else's. Abby tells her dad that if she were the immune one, she'd want her dad to perform the operation anyway. That's noble of her, but it's not noble to kill someone in their sleep without their knowledge. She and her dad thought that act of violence was justified (it wasn't).

And so Joel thinks that killing the Fireflies and the doctor was justified (it wasn't). Abby thinks that killing Joel is justified (it wasn't). Ellie thinks that killing Abby is justified (it isn't). Abby thinks that killing Dina would be justified, because Ellie killed Mel (it isn't).

Elsewhere, Lev thinks that shaving his head is justified (it is). The Scars think that killing Lev is justified (it isn't). And so Lev stops Abby from killing Ellie. And Ellie stops herself from killing Abby. The cycle only stops when someone decides to stop.

If it didn't occur to you during the 1st game, while carrying out Joel's act of killing dozens of people, including doctors, to save one person - even if it means that you're damning everyone in the world to continue living in a zombie apocalypse, and lying to and gaslighting the person you claim to love - that this might be morally questionable, something's wrong with you.

The game never wants you to shift your loyalty to Abby and suddenly hate Ellie. The game wants to expand on the idea it left you with when Joel killed all those people - that you should question your own morality. The game makes you play as Abby while she hunts for Joel and while she attacks Ellie so that it feels BAD when you're attacking a half-dead Abby that's been roasting on a stick in the sun for a few days. Because that should feel bad! It may just be a video game, but you can still feel empathy for characters who have made mistakes. You don't have to like Abby, but you don't need to kill her.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
