Sorry in advance for bad english.
Passed this game in 3 days almost non-stop. It was important for me to understand whether this game is fairly set to 0 points on Metacritic.
I do not agree with low scores. The game tells a difficult story that can really upset you. But that does not make the story bad.
I subtract one point for the length of some sections of the game, but the finale is worth it.

I completed the game the day before yesterday and I have had some time to reflect on this. You'll have likely noticed this game has been review bombed heavily, undeservedly I think.

Other reviewers have pointed out that the characters and or story are badly written and would rate the game on that criticism alone a 0 or 1. I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I think the characters were completely believable in their actions and I think more than enough time was spend on showing where their motivation comes from.

Even if you disagree with me on this after you complete the game, that's okay, this game is still a technical master piece. From the graphics, amazing animations and facial expressions, the controls and combat, no other game before has executed this level of excellence before in my humble opinion (the last game to make me feel that was Red Dead Redemption 2).

The atmosphere this game manages to bring on screen which supported by incredible sound design and voice acting is nothing short of amazing.

Playing this game gave me an intense feeling of dread, hope, anger, joy and peace.

To describe The Last of Us Part II in one word: Intense

Seeing beloved characters getting punched, kicked, murdered in the most horrendous disgusting ways one can only imagine (and literally spit on by the creative lead) is not my kind of enjoying rare spare-time. Slashing through hordes of enemies only to spare the goal target in the end is not good writing. At least have the balls to let the player decide! But then you can’t build a sequel with Abbey in the lead I get it.
You see when Glenn got his head bashed in by Negan - that was the same disgusting stuff noone wanted to see and it not only killed the character but the soul and heart of the franchise. You can like this game of course but it’s definitely not that masterpiece the forces it to be. For all these 15 out of 10 "critics" praises it actually deserves the 0 to even the odds. But to stay fair and not giving these hate mobs points, I stick to the 3.

this is nothing like the first game. this has a completely different atmosphere with revenge and hatred driving every character's decisions, unlike the original whereas love and companionship formed ellie and joel's relationship. the story of ellie's hatred showed the realistic side of relationships, not just the "happy ending" part that we're always so used to, which is why i believe that those who did not enjoy the game were expecting to have everything work out the way they hoped. because of this, i can see why a lot of people didn't like part II. there were definitely times where i rushed the gameplay just to get a level over with. however, we were told that this game wasn't going to be for everyone and good lord Neil Druckmann was not lying. at some parts, it made me feel like an absolute monster and a piece of **** not just because we were being forced to kill dogs, but because i genuinely HATED what i was doing at one point to my opponent. there were a **** ton of twists that kept happening, especially towards the end. so many things were so heart wrenching, and others were heart warming at the same time, but i do admit that some parts were pretty badly executed and some characters absolutely sucked which kinda took away from the story. the whole idea of the game was to emphasize how everything won't have a "good happy ending," which made players think about the realistic side of life, especially when dealing with someone extremely close to you in a post-apocalyptic world. overall, tlou p2 was a rollercoaster of emotions and made me sob multiple times, but also gave me mixed feelings. unfortunately, it didn't come close the amount of appreciation and love i have for the first game because that was the true masterpiece itself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is not for someone wanting a feel good, light-hearted fairy tale. It is by far the most gritty, no-punches-pulled survival horror I have played to date. There is an incredibly ominous, dark undertone to the theme, which is underscored by the brutal combat between multi-dimensional, well developed characters. The body count of those characters that the audience has come to know and love only helps to solidify this game as an absolute gold standard in story telling.

If you played the first game and you didn't think that Joel had a reckoning coming, you are severely naive. He was a most smart, dangerous, cunning protagonist. He and Ellie had more than a few close calls but every time got away because his purpose was to protect her. After slaughtering all the fireflies at St. Mary's, he tried to prevent his fate by coldly executing Marlene, but he didn't get away as clean as he had hoped.

Now, in part II, that reckoning and all the pain, anguish and fear that comes with it are unleashed on the audience. If you are angry that Joel died, it is because you cared about him and he was ripped away. That doesn't make this a bad story, it makes it the best story that can be told. One that actually makes you feel angry or sad or helpless. Then puts a goddamn gun in your hand and lets you hunt down those responsible, at tremendous cost.

If it is playing as Abby, the one who has the blood of Joel on her hands, that upsets you, then perhaps you are too short sighted to understand that she had every reason to beat him to death with an iron. He killed everyone she knew, including her father, and virtually damned the world to a fate where there will never be a solution to the cordyceps. Perhaps the most interesting perspective on this is to consider that would you have played as Abby first, and never known Joel, you would be on her side and despise him as the antagonist. Ultimately, Abby and Ellie are foils of eachother - Joel killed Abby's father and Abby killed Ellie's.

I loved this game and it has truly been worth the wait. The gameplay was the most fun experience I've had on the sticks in a long time with the addition of prone mechanics, excellent dodging and crafting weapon attachments being most notable. The story was sad, gut-wrenching, horrifying, and bittersweet. Anyone who does not consider this game an absolute masterclass should take a step back and remember that the point of a good story is to feel something and the excellent storytellers at Naughty Dog didn't settle for a feel good crowd pleaser.

With gameplay that is polished to perfection and a story that will make you laugh at one moment, then cover your face in horror at the next, I am confident this game will not be outdone for a very long time. Thanks Naughty Dog!

I mean the proof is in the pudding, why else would films like Blade Runner 2049 and Silence flop in the box office, while garbage like the Star Wars sequels and the Avengers are at the top of the lists? I don't know why people are so dumb, hateful and failing to appreciate when good stuff actually come out (it happens so rarely nowadays) and the depths to which Naughty Dog expands the world, characters and ideas of the Last of Us in Part II is nothing short of special. I don't know why most people are so dumb and I don't really give a flying ****, nor should the few who are capable of appreciating what was done here. This game is a masterpiece either way. Expand

Story: Terrible as far as logic is concerned. Naughty Dog failed to make the players care for new characters. Neil Druckmann insisted that after playing through the game people will understand their approach, but it only creates more questions and plot holes.

Gameplay: Same as the previous game, only no multiplayer. There are few new mechanics that are neat but overall it plays the same. However, much less puzzle solving, and more side quests with no impact to the main game whatsoever, rewards you with bits of resources which you'd care only if you're playing in the toughest difficulties.

Graphics: Up to par with everyone's expectations for games releasing this late in gen 8, most of the major areas are pleasantly detailed but you can still see issues with draw distance and texture pop up from time to time, quite immersion breaking.

Sound: Good ambient sound effects bundled with somber background music, there's no joyous tunes as the dev's already mentioned before release that the game takes on a much darker tone than the previous one. Still it feels they went way overboard in that direction.

I would not recommend this game even if it's in a $9.99 bargain bin. If you got the game for free you must burn it immediately and question the intention of the person who gave it to you.

You should buy the game if you...

The Last of Us 2 tries too hard to be unique and moving to the point whee it all feels basic. Killing one of the most beloved characters in gaming and then making you play half the game as the person who kills him is a daring move that I admire, but it ultimately falls flat. It just was not executed very well. Killing Joel was a decent move that I probably would have done if I were writingThe Last of Us 2 tries too hard to be unique and moving to the point whee it all feels basic. Killing one of the most beloved characters in gaming and then making you play half the game as the person who kills him is a daring move that I admire, but it ultimately falls flat. It just was not executed very well. Killing Joel was a decent move that I probably would have done if I were writing the story for this game, but once again, the execution was just nonexistent. To be completely honest, I think that this story would've ended better with Ellie being killed off. The backlash from fans would probably be even worse, and the current ending is getting way more hate than it deserves, but in a game that is meant to be depressing and hopeless, I honestly think it wouldn't be a terrible move. Naughty Dog should probably strongly consider making Tlou 3, and yes, they should have Ellie die at the end. It would be the much needed closure that this franchise needs and would help capture the feel of what this post-apocalyptic world really is about. Speaking of this post-apocalyptic world, everything just felt off about it in this game. The first game really felt like the player was doing every thing to survive in this zombie-like outbreak, but in this game the infected seem like they're in the game just because they had to due to the continuity from the first. When I think about this game, I barely even remember that the infected were in it, when they were.... the literal reason for this entire scenario. So is this game a total fail? No. It has some of the best visuals in the history of gaming, and the gameplay (while remaining the same throughout and being almost being a replica of the first game) is still extraordinary and the enemy AI was some of the smartest I've ever seen in a video game. So is the story that bad? For a triple A game, it's very good. For a Last of Us game, it is god awful. Probably my biggest gripe with the story is that this just didn't feel like it was the Last of Us. Ellie, who is my favorite character in gaming history, didn't really even feel like Ellie to me. Everything just felt off in this game, and I think most people agree. So as a standalone game, this game is an 8-10. As a Last of Us game, it is a 3-5. The reviews for this game are absolute nonsense from both sides of the coin. There are tons of people who had in their mind they were going to like the game no matter what, and there were tons of people who were going to hate the game no matter what (mostly because of the leaks.) And yes there are quite a few political points raised in this game; not as many as people make it sound like, but enough to make quite a few people upset, especially when pretty much all of it is completely unnecessary (for example, bigot sandwich.) The lgbt+ representation in this game is something almost unheard of in very popular games, so yes, a lot of lgbt+ people are going to be a little more inclined to say this game is very good. On the other side, you have people who do not like the lgbt+ representation, so they will be more inclined to say the game is not very good. In conclusion, while this game tries to be something to be more special than it is and comes across as a little pretentious, and has a somewhat lackluster plot, it's still one of the best games out there, and most of the reviews (good and bad) are biased. But as a TLOU fan, I was extremely disappointed. Expand

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Master Score: 3.3/10

    Game Mechanics: 5/10
-The feel of the game is generally smooth and easy to pick up. It doesn't innovate much on the first game, however. Too many of the dynamic events are simplified to pressing Square. The most jarring mechanic was the targeting, which left something to be desired to say the least. I found myself suddenly beating an invisible wall too many times while in a fight sequence.

    Game Design/Experience: 3/10
-The game design was lazy at best, insulting at worst. So many of the levels just felt like uninspired landscapes, one room after another. They tried to distract from it with fancy graphics (the graphics are phenomenal btw, especially considering it's on PS4), but I was seriously bored by too much of the world (I'm looking at you, Seattle hospital). They tried to make it interesting by packing the levels with lots of hostile entities, but they couldn't be bothered to even make more than like 4 runner models, I was killed by the same asian female zombie like 20 times throughout the game. The AI periodically flicks a switch from being able to see through walls, to standing directly in front of the player without noticing them. The gore is over the top and frankly disgusting, they way overdid it.

    Story: 2/10
-In my opinion, the first game was lacking in the character development department. TLOU2 killed off the only dynamic character from the first game within 2 hours. They tried to make Ellie more interesting by introducing Dina, but it was like they expected me to have a bond with her after 1 sex scene, it just wasn't there. speaking of sex, there was way too much sexual energy in this title. Too many times it felt as if I was playing a fan fiction. Someone at Naughty Dog seriously needed some sexual relief before they got their hands on the script. The alternate story arc with Abby was completely disinteresting, especially when it was told in the backwards manner they went with. I kept asking myself "when will this part end?" only to be met with more and more of Abby's backstory. Maybe I could have opened up a bit if the story were told in chronological order and the story writers introduced more of Abby BEFORE she killed the only character I really liked from the first game. The entire last section in California felt like it was just a rehash of what we had seen over and over again before, and did nothing to add any closure to the story. The first game had me on the verge of sobbing at the end, this title merely had me crying over the 17 hours I had wasted. I wouldn't be surprised if I heard tomorrow the script-writing team was a collaboration between a teenage wattpad writer and an 8th grade Promising Young Writers award runner-up. If the title were rushed I'd be more understanding, but this stink bomb was 7 years in the making.

Final Note: There's been a lot of debate over the topic of "forced diversity" regarding this title. Let me preface this by saying that I am a homosexual man, certainly not someone that's threatened by the "homosexual agenda." It was obvious from playing that too much of the game was just put in to score "woke points." There was no tact at all with how Naughty Dog introduced these elements, It honestly felt like a parody. The backlash this title has recieved is indicative of how poorly executed it was. If the goal is to normalize all sexual orientations in video games, its not going to be achieved by smashing a rainbow-textured hammer through all the pillars of good game design.

The game speaks for itself, graphics are one of the best of the generation, gameplay might be the best, sound effects and musics are on masterpiece level, but let me talk about the major point of the complaints, the story
The writing is strong, the story is completely logical, but it's not the story you want it to be, it is dark, cruel, and sad. The story fits the series perfectly.

Of course, it all comes down to the story. I think the story and the art of storytelling is amazing and even went beyond part one. This game forced me to emotionally go to unexplored paths of myself. It crushes and guts you to a point, where you're at the edge of stopping to play it, but you just can't quit it because the story magnetically draws you back in, it takes such a massive toll on your emotional comfort. I've never experienced this with any other game before. I still catch my mind grinding about the story, even though I finished the game three days ago and this will probably not stop for a long time. I'm sure there are many ways how they could have told another story for Joel & Ellie in a different perspective, but I think they executed it in the most difficult, dark, outrageous, crushing manner, rather than playing safe and pleasing the majority of gamers with a "this is how the story must have proceeded, everything else is BS" storyline.

From a tech point of view it's also almost perfect. Only had one AI issue with Dina trapping me in a corner one time in a very diverse 28 hour run. The graphics are astonishing and the, in my opinion, already good control system of part one got refined and enhanced. That's why I can't understand how anyone could give this game less than a 3/10. The achievements of graphics, audio and atmosphere technology are unquestionably great. TLOU2 sets the bar very high for any following games, just like the TLOU1 did 7 years ago.

For me, expectations were met and also exceeded in many ways. I hope that this was not the last part we will see of The Last of Us franchise. I feel obliged to have this as my first review on metacritic, because I think the backlash for Naughty Dog and Druckmann is too harsh in many ways.

I also respect your opinion if you don't like it, This review here is just my opinion.

The fight in the theater was bad because it made u play as Abby and think the u killed Ellie and Dina until it cuts to the farm they get and it would be better if the game ended there but it goes on with a 2 hour epilog to find Abby again and in the end of the final fight Abby leaves like she wanted to, killing Joel and leaving ok and Ellie wants to kill her but doesn't and lets her leave alive so the whole story is pointless. Ellie gets back home and finds that Dina left her and now she's all alone, everyone she's cared for has died or left her.
