A perfect game should entertain, teach, and provoke emotion (positive or negative or both). The gameplay and audio/visuals alone warrant top marks in entertainment. The lessons on empathy and futility of revenge are present, if somewhat on the nose; education isn't a top score here but it's checked off the list.

The lessons on empathy and futility of revenge are present, if somewhat on the nose; education isn't a top score here but it's checked off the list.

Finally we have the provocation of feelings. Similar to how a perfect feel good game, film, play, or book can make you smile, a proper feel bad story can make you frown and feel down inside. You feel bad but the point is that you felt something at all. It's too easy these days to find soulless cash grab sequels that illicit no emotion save perhaps boredom. TLOU2 is successful in this department. Not perfect, but successful.

10 out of 10 not because it is fully earned but because too many 0/10 scores were submitted by those who didn't play the full game in order to fairly pass judgement on the whole thing.

Don't be mislead by the fake reviews or ones done by players that have only played 2-4 hours of the game before reviewing. 50% of the game is played with a different character that we know nothing about. Which might deter some players as it would've deterred me had I not fallen to the same fate.

Overall (Since it's mostly a story focused game) 3/10

-- Characters were bland and easily forgotten; they had no impact in their roles and were simply supportive characters to make the player feel less alone, they served no big purpose in the story
and they felt as though they were added only to kill off, which could've worked if they bothered making them matter more to the player, e.g. (Sam & henry in The Last of Us).
-- Story fell short due to having many plot-holes: (Big spoilers):

    - Multiple flashbacks felt unfitting and randomized at times, which took the player outside the immersive experience one should experience
    - Joel's death felt forced to illicit a poor shock experience which could've been executed better
(Either added value by learning more about Abby beforehand, or delayed further into the game)
    - Playing as Abby after a cliffhanger scene made the experience unenjoyable and most players agreed that her role took a very long part in the full game, fixing the issue could've been resolved with her role being played in future DLC or simply shortening her gameplay time. This resulted in mass outrage and fans were not happy with good reason. It's simply not fun to play as the antagonist that killed the previous loved main character in such a gruesome way, and finding any way to empathize with her was gone after her deed.
    - The ending is a cliche; revenge is bad, which is okay if it wasn't contradictory to itself. Abby left undeserving of mercy where Ellie lost everything dear to her without compensation. It's realistic but unsatisfying. A good story can be shocking, sad, and emotional without destroying what everyone loves, and it's unfortunate that Neil could not understand this point.

This is the greatest fraud in the history of video games.

Something I doubt a lot of the good/bad reviews have in common based on the nothing information they provide. First, the death. Yes, it sucked. Yes, I think Joel's story deserved a better ending, but that's. not. life. This game doesn't pull its punches about life. It's messy. Be it the kissing comment by Saul or Seth. The sleeping with a guy who's wife is about to have his kid. To the whole epilogue! Second, gameplay solid. If you liked the first the second is better. Third, graphics great. I loved all the cut scenes. I don't get people's anger over A) a game B) one that was great. That's my two cents. Expand

The only reason they killed Joel is because they didn't want a man to overshadow Ellie and Abby but by doing so they made the rest of the 20+ hours of game play not fun at all, it's all very linear game play for no reason for the player to enjoy other than they want to complete the game because they just spent £55 on it and don't want to waste money. The character development for Abby was completely backwards, if the dev's wanted us to empathise towards her and her journey for vengeance, don't drop the player into that perspective after you killed off the soul of the franchise before we even know who she is.... Makes absolutely no sense. That results in us the players not giving a **** about her throughout and then you have the audacity to make us shoot at Ellie towards the end? I must have tried to throw myself off a clip or clapped every time I died as Abby. This game has so much potential and Naughty Dog took a **** on it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the mechanics, the sounds, the music, the maps, the characters aesthetics and layers of different groups we come across. I like that Joel was present through flashbacks so we felt his impact and presence however the way he died, face down and in front of his loved ones, seemed like a cheap attempt to create a traumatic motivator for Ellie. It made Abby look sadistic. Unfortunately making a character like this enjoyable to play is a difficult challenge and I feel they missed the mark. This would be an issue if this were a movie. Abby didn’t feel like a well developed character, it felt like the plot was written first and she was created to fit into the mirroring aspects too much. I respect what they were trying to do but the second half of the game was a chore to play though as a result. For me they lost this out engagement when they made us play as Abby, a character we don’t like, and get us to hurt a character we like, Ellie. Had we played as Ellie then we w old still have understood both characters perspectives but it wouldn’t feel so uncomfortable for players. Depressing films are fine. A depressing story in a game need much better characters and a hook that makes us enjoy playing them and this game missed than by forcing the ‘mirroring’ in the story writing. Expand

These out of context scenes have spread false rumours about the characters and cast, and led to toxicity amongst the fan base. Joel’s fate in this game should not have surprised many fans of the game. The amount of obvious red herrings within the marketing and Ellie’s quest for vengeance revealed this. The story is nuanced and ultimately about moving on from trauma and accepting the path of forgiveness. It’s a beautiful story, and fleshes out the world. I’m rating it a 10 in order to help counter the ridiculous review bombing. This game is not a 0/10. If you thought Joel was the protagonist of Part 2, you clearly weren’t paying attention. The killing of Joel in this way made the game realistic. It is really realistic for us to easily lose our loved ones in this universe as we easily kill people, but with a baseball bat? Seeing this does not upset the players, it angers. If scriptwriter want to kill Joel more, it's would even make more sense if Joel was died from gets bitten by a zombie. ///

    I explain the assessment.
I don’t care about the LGBT agenda.
The problem is in a game that parasitizes on the glory of the first part.
    Let's analyze the points:
    1. Attention to detail
In the settlement, the NPCs do not even talk to each other, the developers did not think of registering dialogs with the extras. In the first part this was not. Yes, even in Halva the second census was livelier. I can bring a lot of such examples.
    2. Gameplay
Added one feature, Ellie now knows how to crawl, otherwise it copies the breakthrough gameplay of the first part. There is no innovation, well, at least not worse.
    3. Graphics
Landscapes look worse than in RDR 2 last year, but this is why it can not be called a breakthrough. It is at least worse than one game (or even more, because there is still God of War 4). Facial expression is no better than in the first part or Uncharted 4. A breakthrough in 7 years has not occurred.
    4. Characters
Not a single character evokes sympathy, not even the matured Ellie. Drackman has scenario impotence. Only Joel pleases, but his screen time is very short, and the character is attractive only thanks to the disclosure in the first part.
    5. The plot
Banalism, with very rotten scenario twists, one scene with giraffes in the first part, puts this whole game on its knees. But in the first part there was Joel’s injury, the establishment of relationships between the two main characters, a meeting with cannibals, a meeting with black brothers, etc. etc. And what is the ending there, just a brain explosion, here it causes only bewilderment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After a 23 1/2 hour first playthrough yesterday, I’ve just started my second. Part II improves on The Last of Us in every possible way; Gameplay, Visuals, Music, AI, Worldbuilding. Acting, like the first game, was phenomenal and the new characters are mostly great. The polarising story might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but having dual-protagonists (especially ones being pitted as each other’s enemies) allows for something more fleshed out and is something I’ve never seen. The end, which others have described as unsatisfying, stays true to reality and the world that’s been created here. Not every story needs a happy ending. I’m a man, and there were some tears and had my mouth agape for most of the end portions.

The only downside to this title is that it can sometimes be monotonous, ie gameplay, that have carried over from its predecessor.

For only half a year, I have been part of the Playstation community. I met with a lot of amazing games, one of which was The Last of Us 2. This is the rightful heir to the first part. In fact, the gameplay cycle has not changed much. You also follow the plot through the cutscenes, look for resources to survive and defeat opponents in the location, and then move on to the plot. But the details have become more, graphics and animations are speechless. This time, Neil Drackmann decided to take a chance, and together with Halle Gross wrote a script that literally blew up the TLOU fan community. He gave us not a simple story with the main character and villain, whom he must defeat, but gave us a, complex story of revenge and the cycle of wildness, which we can consider from two sides. This story will not appeal to everyone, but those who can understand it, discard their positive feelings for the main characters and look at them from the side, this game will shock them. And I became one of these people. Everyone should definitely try this game, and even if you are not thrilled with the plot, the graphics and gameplay are unlikely to leave anyone indifferent. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After twenty hours of trekking through The Last of Us Part II, the credits began to roll, Gustavo Santaolalla's incredible guitar work in the background, and my emotions caught in my throat. Neil and the entire Naughty Dog team created one of the most unique, powerful, and hauntingly beautiful experiences there is. The story will stick with you for days and weeks to come, especially the ending. Ellie's journey for revenge becomes a tale of the player learning that in the world of The Last of Us, there is no good or bad, only survival. Ellie will always be number one in our hearts, but I understand why Abby did what she did. I understand why everyone in this world does what they do. Neil shows us throughout the game how Ellie and Abby are living very similar lives, including avenging a father and navigating a love triangle with a newborn on the way. Every person had their own reason to be loved and respected and were missed dearly during long sections of pure gameplay. The gunplay and movement is crisp in ways we have never seen this development team do so before. Plenty of weapons to unlock, upgrade, and use to approach every encounter as it owns individual, standalone experience. Brand new enemy types and factions are welcomed additions and fill the city, including a particular late game boss that is surely going to stick with the fans. Seattle is gorgeous and incredibly detailed, rewarding the player for exploration. The partially open-world layout is one that should be adopted by most developers going forward, but will be hard to match what Naughty Dog has created here. Every single storefront and apartment breathes it's own life and has something to offer whether it's lore from the game's 200+ collectibles, supplies for upgrades, or a sense of realism and immersion. Visiting every nook and cranny of the map has never felt so satisfying. The gameplay, graphics, and pacing are a vast improvement over an already known masterpiece predecessor, especially the swimming. Also, rope physics. Part II is hopeless, bleak, and soul-crushing in the rightful way a world of this nature should be and while, my heartbreaks knowing it is very unlikely Ellie is going back to Jackson to be with Dina at the end, the entire game telegraphed that sometimes, you need to let things go. Joel, Ellie, Abby, and even Lev lost everything because they let their emotions get the best of them. It is a hard pill to swallow and clearly, a lot of players are unable to do so, but it is a valuable lesson that Neil conveyed through gripping storytelling. The end of every chapter had welcomed award-winning, film caliber scenes unfolding numerous, fascinating storylines. Each one filled to the brim with its own self worth, whether it's the quest for revenge, or the tale of finding love with another or the tale finding love within yourself, even though it abandons your peoples' beliefs. There is so much to enjoy in The Last of Us and the game encourages the player to return for round two as all the upgrades cannot be obtained in a single playthrough. My journey through New Game+ so far already has me in captivation and overfilled with raw emotion. Rewatching certain cutscenes with my knowledge of endgame opens a whole new level of beauty and understanding. I eagerly await specific sections of the game such as Ellie's battle through Hillcrest, any interaction with Dina, and the museum to name a few. Part II is not an easy ride and the pain it brings may stick for a longtime, but these are stories that had to be told and had to be heard and I am thankful for it. There has never been a game like this and I'm not sure if there ever will be again. Expand

The "revenge is bad" angle doesn't even work with this game because the person who gets revenge gets to walk away with a loved one, whereas the person who gives up on it loses everything.
This game makes gaming look **** :)

The first game had a great story throughout and mediocre gameplay that was kept interesting because of the chemistry between the characters. Part 2 has a poor story with slightly improved gameplay but very little chemistry between characters. Its not 'politcally charged' at all - those criticisms are bizarre to me.
The game, for me, is split in two halves with an epilogue.
The first half is very good. You play as Ellie and she really remains as the only character worth a damn.
The second half's story, however, is a terrible convoluted mess. Flashbacks within flashbacks trying to get you invested in shallow characters you already know the fates of. An 'alternate' tale from the perspective of another - essentially the antagonist but the game purposefully tries to blur the line between antagonist and protagonist - which tries to fill you remorse for glorified random NPC's you killed as Ellie. I didn't give a damn about anything this other story the game tried to tell. It was a painfully boring 12+ hours. If the game continued telling Ellie's story instead of this, it would have been much better.
Eventually the Ellie and the antagonist's stories catch up and we enter the ending sequence/epilogue. The ending is as underwhelming equally as underwhelming, leaving you with a feeling of pointlessness and frustration - if you do manage to feel invested at all.
Its a real shame. It had such promise around the 12 hour mark but instead of developing further it just dwells on events which it tries to force the importance of.
An uninspired, drawn out and irritating story in a story-focussed game makes this not worth a play, especially at full price.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It really seems that the game in the end was not quite what I expected. The graphics are the best of the generation, the gameplay and immersion all score 10. But the story itself really, at least for me, is really disapointted.

First Abby kills the most beloved character in the franchise, then I am forced to play more than half the game with her, it made no sense to me, even showing the other side of the story, I only wanted Abby dead...

After that having to fight against Ellie? Nonsense, since my anger was directed at killing Abby for what she did.

For me the ideal would be:

    1. Joey and Tommy are cornered by Abby and her group, Ellie arrives at the moment and sees Joey all bloodied being thrown out the window or falls from a very high height and he is presumed dead.

    2. Ellie begins her revenge journey with help from Tommy, Jesse and Dina for gameplay.

    3. You wouldn't play with Abby

    4. At the end of the game Ellie manages to reach Abby by invading the Stadium where the Wlf (wolf) are, but in the end they manage to capture Ellie, Dina, and Jessy.

    Tommy manages to escape.

    5. Tommy discovers that Joey survived the fall and injuries, and the gameplay at the end of the game is with Joey against the entire wlf army

**** it! Against everything and everyone to save Ellie!
In the end Ellie hugs Joey asking him for forgiveness and calls him dad ...

    There you go

It is one of the most if not the most complicated story driven game of all time.
Now i know there are a lot of negative reviews out there but what people don't understand is every single person in this game is a protagonist of their own story. You guys have every right to hate Abby because she killed one of the most beloved protagonist of the generation in that brutal fashion but if Ellie was in Abby's shoes you could not say she would've done different. I get that it is really difficult to get over a loss like that and show empathy but i request you guys to at least give it a try. Now to the review, this game is one of the most beautiful game on the Playstation, Every little corner is very well defined and is the biggest game created by Naughty dog so far. The combat mechanics is very brutal but satisfying given the context. The story is very complex and poetic that in this post apocalyptic world, the writers want you understand every decision made by Ellie and every other character. The story might be way too brutal and unforgiving but in a post apocalyptic world like this these people do what they need to do to survive. The ending is not unjust, its just that Ellie finally understands that she has hurt Abby enough and figured out that all this violence is unneeded and empathizes Abby........
If you thought this review was too cheesy or whatever i am sorry but that's what i honestly think. So do not just believe any negative reviews you read online because most of their reviews are 2 dimensional for a lack of a better word. And some of them just give bad reviews just to join in on all the hype or to get attention

Which I completely understand but to give it a zero rating is madness, it may not be for you but rating this as zero is either being salty or a review bomb. The games music, graphics and voice acting are second to none. The tone it sets is one of suspense and shocking awe. The environmental story telling elements are done with care and enhance the experience. The gameplay is similar to the first game but updated slightly. There is something so satisfying and visceral about the stealth take downs.

I haven’t gone into story spoilers as going into this game having not seen the leaks meant the big moments hit like a freight train. I am not a particularly big last of us fan but this is a masterpiece and much like another favourite game of mine death stranding it’s not for everyone but it’s for me. Of course I'm waiting for the third part, or any other game from Naughti Dogs, because I know that they will do everything cool. It would have been funnier if they had done a spin off about a character, for example, about the very Abby that many loved. How Abby lived to the second part, how cicadas and so on lived. I am going to buy ps5, and to it and EVIL2. Yes, there will be no such feelings, because I already know what will happen, but the stealth in this game is cool, as in the first part. Wow, I feel that there will be a lot of agressive gameplay on YouTube.
As for the plot. It seems to me that Tommy was unlikely to behave like in the house when he brought the card and told Ellie that she promised that she would take revenge. Those who are intolerant of attrition can not buy a game, although there are very few such moments about LGBT people and no one is obviously imposing LGBT on you. But, unfortunately, nevertheless, due to minorities, changing the game so that many others hated it was a big mistake, estimates on metacritic will float negatively.
It is unfortunate that there will be no dlc, as in the first part of left behind. Because before the release of ps5, I will obviously miss this game and in any case, I will at least once review the passage. (Translated with the help of google translator)

When it comes to games like this, story is Everything, I’ve seen so many critics give this 10/10 because of how pretty it looks, that’s not how you rate a game, that’s why I continue to feel as though the critics are soulless shells of humans who are in the pockets of big business and lost touch with the real consumer. An ending to a game can change the whole game entirely. Why do you kill of a beloved character as joel and push us the player on the quest for revenge, even have us play as Joel’s killer, that just pissed us off, literal salt in the wounds, and then you have the audacity to not let us finish the job at the end, like it gets a 0 for just “being pretty” and having similar mechanics to the first so it’s kinda easy to get into it but. Just finished the game and thought I'd share my opinion, the score is just my thoughts on how much I enjoyed the game, CHARACTERS were okay however some choices were really bad, playin as Abby was really bad in my opinion. The STORY was fine but the ending made me feel bad to Ellie and the reason she left Abby live was really weird. VIsuals and Gameplay were amazing, the new improvements in the combat and stealth were top-notch. The reason for the score is cuz stories in videogames for me is really not that important as gameplay and graphics, so there you have it.

Now the backlash from the fans were expected but people should try to be less biased when playin their games so their opinions stay honest, balance is good, give it a 0 or a 10 as long as you stay unbiased then it's fine, thanks for your time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I believe there writers of this game forgot how to write a story. If you compare this game to red dead redemption 2 you will understand why. In this game Joel’s death did not have any meaning, if they were to kill of a main character their deaths should mean something in the series. No one should just main characters off just to make the story darker. In rdr2 Arthur Morgan lived as an outlaw and we got to experience his life and understood how his character developed as the story continued and when the character was facing death at the end his death meant John marston(main character of rdr) got to live a life with his family as he always wanted and Arthur Morgan might not have lived a hero’s life but he surely died a hero’s death and at the end he did what’s he wanted to do I.e save John. My point his this game is trash, the facial graphics looks worse than ps3, the story is messed up since you start the whole revenge story to avenge Joel and then at the end the killer is let go because all of a sudden Elli decided killing is bad. Mind that she killed 100’s of people cold heartedly. Absolutely horrible game do not buy it save the money for smtg else. I also really don't understand the hate that the mid game character switch caused alot of people. I for one was so glad they explored Abby so much. Showing visually and horrifically the realization that everyone lives in their own vacuum of experiences and view them through their own lens and vengeance while powerful, ultimately causes nothing but a cyclical pain. I'm just your average Joe who still enjoys video games, going into early adulthood. Since my very first NES console, I knew there and then that video games would be a huge part of my life. I even plan to play video games into my elderly years (hopefully being able to share them with my children, then grandchildren).

I follow a golden rule of thumb in life which is "set your expectations very low so you can never be disappointed". Having said that, I went in as open-minded as I could be with zero expectations, just as I had for the original TLOU1:Remastered. TLOU1:Remastered was an absolute masterpiece. The sequel is tragic travesty.

Strong storytelling was all but missing. The story of TLOU1:Remastered was the selling point of the original. The characters we fell in love with in the original were disrespected without cause or provocation in this sequel. We are then forced upon with new characters that simply did not earn our appreciation, respect or adulation yet. Imagine if in the near God of War sequel, Kratos was not playable and instead a completely new character just assumed his spot. Wouldn't Atreus and the player playing the game suddenly question "who the heck are you and why am I forced now to play you when I bought this game to play as Kratos and Atreus?" The Spartan rage in that dilemma would certainly be understandable to its faithful fans who felt betrayed and sold on deceitful lies aka false marketing.

The game play is based on the same template as the original, minus 2 new functions of crawling and dodging. Now that can be good or bad. In my experience, it was bad. In the original it was simply good because it was the first time players were introduced to that system so it was fresh. Waiting 7 years just to see virtually no exciting change to said game play system was just plain sad. It can get very boring, very quickly and it did for me ultimately.

The soundtrack is mesmerizing and beautiful. Gustavo Santaolalla 's work was simply phenomenal. It's just a shame that music wasn't used as often throughout the game. This scored 1 point for the review.

The other 1 point goes to the visuals. I cannot and won't lie that the visuals of the game is absolutely gorgeous. It truly pushes the PS4 and PS4 Pro's hardware capabilities to its limit (complimented by the jet engine that goes off on the console during heavily rendered scenes). The visuals are some of the best of this generation of consoles.

In summary, I was deeply disappointed by a franchise with a proven track record of offering some of the best video games, only for it to fully betray its loyal fans and patrons. This is coming from a guy who walked into the sequel with an open-mind, as they requested. Even with such low expectations from the start I could not fathom having this travesty on my PS4 Pro any longer. I was fair in the sense that I played through the game, and nowhere through my 25+ hours of play through did I have the same magical feeling of awe and emotional connect that I did for the original masterpiece. Please be warned: there is absolutely NO FUN involved with the sequel. Naughty Dog themselves already relayed in a PR statement that they the word FUN should never be associated with their games. Well one word they should be associated with is FRAUD. They clearly know what they are doing and have done to its fans and patrons. The creative director himself, Neil Druckmann could care less if you enjoyed the game or not. If anything, this was a brilliant marketing scheme that allowed him and the people at Naughty Dog to laugh all the way to the bank with their bags and bags of pre-order money. There are absolutely no losers from this sequel, just winners: Naughty Dog and their bank accounts. Suffice to say I will not be purchasing any future products from Naughty Dog - they simply lost my trust and loyalty.

I really enjoyed the game. Almost every single second of it.

    Gameplay 10/10
    Atmosphere 10/10
    Graphics&Audio 10/10
    Characters 10/10
    Story 8/10

I liked the Story and character-progression a lot. I'm just not a huge fan of the ending. Thats why it isnt a 10/10.

So my overall Rating would be 48/50 (or 96/100)

And im already going into the New game + to get the platinum trophy.

    BIG SPOILER AHEAD!

The visuals are stunning and the audio is great. Gameplay is almost the same as in the first game which is not a bad thing because i enjoyed it the last time. They added some cool new elements and it just plays good. Story has its moments, flashbacks and parts with Joel are amazing. It just shows why people loved the first game so much. It was kinda disappointing that they actually killed him of in the first 2 hours in the game and that his death wasn't really paid of the way it could have been. But hey. Nothing can be perfect right? It kinda bugged me that i actually enjoyed parts with Joel's killer more than parts with Ellie. Maybe because it was lacking something? Maybe some killed of character? Just maybe. The story overall was ok. Some plot hole here and there, some weird characters and so on. As I mentioned there were parts that i really enjoyed and parts and decisions i just can wrap my head around. It wasn't nearly as great as first game when it came out but I had good time playing this and maybe some day i will play it again.

En cuanto al Apartadó tecnico lo hace magistralmente. La historia logra hacer una gran continuación de su entrega anterior aunque no niego que tiene ciertas fallas

The Last of Us Part II é disparado o melhor jogo que eu já joguei na minha vida, a história é uma perfeição, o pessoal que está reclamando é somente pela morte do Joel pq não é possível, aquele jogo é perfeito, ele tem gráficos mega realista, o jogo é muito mais difícil que o primeiro pela melhoria da inteligência artificial, os personagens são marcantes até aquela filha da puta da Abby, sinceramente não entendo o Hate, mas o jogo é ótimo Expand

Voy a ser objetivo, no es el 10 que me dió la crítica, tampoco es el 3 que le estaba dando por hate. Beautiful gameplay and graphic , can't wait for multiplayer to come out. The story is horrible, and just kills the game. Uninteresting and unlikable characters. Would tell others to rent or wait till on sale or for the multiplayer to come out . Very disappointed

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
