I know that it's difficult to accept such a difficult story for characters that many of us fell in love with 7 years ago, but the world that ND created for TLoU is not a kind one. This game isn't about closure, satisfaction for the player, or teaching obvious lessons. It is a story about ramifications, revenge, and hate and the cataclysmic costs associated with them.

From a technical perspective, ND outdid themselves. The game is visually stunning, the mechanics have improved from the already great game play experience of the first game without deviating too much, and the variety of approaches the player can take to each encounter makes for an experience with many possibilities. The attention to detail is second to none.

Now, leaving that statement, let's talk about the game on a simple way, without spoilers: Great graphics, lame design in some areas, absence of a OST, more cinematics than gameplay. For another games it would be enough for a 6/10 or 7/10, but NO for TLOU.

2 reasons why I say it: 1-Legacy, which they ruthlessly destroyed. 2-Fake News! It is obvious that they paid and extorted different "gamer journalists" to evade this disaster, and they failed, NOW THE TRUTH IS KNOCKING ON THEIR DOORS.

And you... do you see the elephant in the room?

Yes. I got annoyed playing for long stretches as Abby and wanted to get back to playing as Ellie but, overall, it made sense.
We learn what was behind Abby's motive for seeking vengeance against Joel. Her motives were just as valid as Ellie's were for hunting down Abby.
The story telling was very good. The game play was us to Naughty Dogs standards. The graphics were gorgeous.
I enjoyed some of the new mechanics of game play and wish they were featured more in the story.
We still saw Joel during the flashbacks and they were bittersweet. For anyone who's lost a loved one they were extremely touching moments.
I saw or heard some of the spoilers before the game was released so I was prepared for somethings but I've never let spoilers spoil a game for me. Sometimes they make me look forward to it even more.
This is an awesome game. Don't listen to the naysayers. Play the game yourself and make your own opinion.

I absolutely do not recommend it. The story sucks everything out of the game leaving nothing to be enjoyed in its wake. The gameplay is fine, the graphics are good, the sounds are great, but none of that can compete with this abysmal story. This game doesn't deserve a 0 but it's a far cry from a 10.

they wanted to do it dramatically like the first game for example, let's think that they want to make a dramatic introduction at the beginning of the game, the only character we have connected with is Joel it would be absurd if there was a vengeance story for dina or tommy but I have to admit that the death of Joel creates a gap in the other part of the game. The game constantly kills things we connect with for example, we love dogs at the beginning of the game and then we kill the dogs.playing abby was seriously insulting. The most ridiculous thing was not to kill abby at the end of the game.Other than that, the gameplay was very nice. I saw people who said gameplay was bad, please keep playing cs go.The game was not bad except for the emotions that wanted to be felt much in the game do not call the game bad because a certain community says it is bad.Just play the game and criticize it with your own ideas

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don’t think this is a game about revenge exactly, I think it’s more about grief and forgiveness.

I'll start by saying that I am a massive fan of TLOU - I've replayed it about 20 times and the magic in the game comes from Joel and Ellie and the development of their relationship. I didn't “love” the TLOU2. I didn't enjoy it. I can appreciate the technical marvel, the game play (especially the combat) and the cinematography. I can even appreciate or accept the story that is being told.

But I feel robbed. And this is exactly how Ellie feels. And you feel that you been robbed of Joel, or the game you thought you would be playing, the game you waited seven years for. It's that visceral.

For Ellie, she knows that Joel loves her. She knows that she loves Joel. Anyone with a less than perfect relationship with a parent can understand the tension and the conflict. After TLOU, Ellie spends two years not being able to be entirely okay around Joel. She suspects that he's lied about something, but she doesn't know for sure. For two years, Joel watches his decision erode at the most important relationship he has in his life. Then Ellie finds out and it's destroyed. We don't see much, but I imagine that Ellie is distant and cold with him. Two years of their relationship imploding. You see Ellie depressed and stand-offish. When you see Joel his eyes are dejected, his shoulders slouch, resigned.

And then we have the conversation after the barn dance and there's hope that Ellie can forgive Joel and they can try rebuild what they used to have. When Ellie and Dina go on patrol the next day, Ellie says that she and Joel might watch a movie together. She has hope, she wants to try.

Then Joel dies. And Ellie is robbed. This is not just the death of a "parent", this is the death of a "parent" she spent four years directing her anger and despondence at. I'm not at all saying that Joel was not complicit in the bed he made for himself but I, like him, would have made the same choice again. A choice that saw Ellie date, watch movies, fall in love, wonder if she needed to shower or change her clothes. She knows that Joel's choice gave her that but she can't stop resenting him for robbing her of her agency. Until she decides that it's time that she needs to.

They never get to rebuild that relationship. I think part of why Ellie goes deux ex machina on her revenge mission is because of rage, not at Joel dying or at Abby, but her rage at herself. Her grief makes her incapable of processing any introspection so she directs it at the only thing she can - ostensibly revenge and at killing Abby.

The grief that you can personally experience is unknowable to another person, but TLOU2 makes us live through that grief by being Ellie. And we are angry, we feel robbed. And we direct that grief at Abby, because Abby is a straw man for everything that did happen and everything that doesn't get to happen. But Abby isn't a straw man, she's a person trying to survive and cope with her grief just like everyone else in TLOU universe.

I think Ellie reacts in the violent way she does because she can't forgive herself. And that's the forgiveness I think TLOU2 centres on - not forgiving Joel or forgiving Abby. She can't forgive herself for those four years that were wasted and that she and Joel will never have. And she can't move on until she does. In the final scene in Santa Barbara when she is sitting stooped in the water, she is defeated and a shell of who she was. That's what hating herself has led to. But she sees Joel and she knows it has to end. She has to accept that this is what has happened. It's never been about Abby, and she sees Abby and Lev and sees her and Joel and that for her to move on, she needs to forgive herself. It's regret and guilt that drives her, and destroys her. Not hate for Abby.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I will blandly start with the pros and the cons:

    pros:
    amazing soundtrack
stunning graphics (really pushed the jet engine in my PS4)
    fitting atmosphere
    really scary horror elements
    solid boss fights
    amazing flashbacks

    middleground:
    fluid gameplay

    cons:
    gamebreaking bugs
    introduction of shallow characters
    misshandling of tons of characters
very basic run of the mill story
deceptive trailers and interviews by the developers
alteration of the first game's story, just so the current story can be justified
still really dumb ai and not enough use of new elements (-> the dogs)
    finale was unsatisfactory

This leads me to a score of 4/10. Now remember, I write this from a perspective of a player, that has enjoyed the previous game. As a standalone game, without knowing anything about TLOU, TLOU2 deserves 2 points more in my opinion.
My review won't have much of a structure, it's not a classic review. It's rather about random things that come to mind, while trying to adress each and every one of those points. I will most definitely forget to adress some things. Bear in mind that I am no professional reviewer.

So let's start with the good things... The game looks stunning! There isn't really that much to add. Naughty Dog really has pulled everything out of the PS4s repertoire, so much that you even experience (very very few) framedrops, which don't really bother me that much tbh, since the last of us is no competitive shooter. The whole presentation is amazing and really gives you apocalyptic vibes. Good apocalyptic vibes, because even though the game plays after the downfall of humanity, its still so vibrant and detailed. It gives it such a nice atmosphere, every locations is a stunner, it overloads your senses to the point where it's nearly overstimulating. Same goes for the music. It underlines everything that's good about the appearance and amplifies it tenfold. It also added to the "horror" aspect of the game. Yes I know, it isn't a horror game per se, but the dread you felt throughout encounters in a big rotten and empty city were just chilling. You were always on edge, especially since every non-human encounter was very unpredictable. Now we get to the bossfights, which also were a stregth of the game. they were perfectly stage, they felt heavy and "plastic" and they were challenging.
Now this sounds all good and fine and it seems that the last of us II is a perfect continuation to the beloved first adventure. However Appearance and playability isn't everything. The most important aspect of TLOU was it's characters, it's story, the relationship you have formed. None of that is good in the second game. None. Naughty dog introduced a bunch of new characters, at least half of them were treated as NPCs. Once they died an unspectacular death, they have been simply forgotten -> Jesse and Manny. Most act absolutely irrational, as our beloved "protagonist" and his brother. Joel and Tommy had the strongest downgrade in rationality, considering they still live in a post apocalyptic world. They treated an armed group of people seemingly as acquaintances, being incredibly relaxed and giving out info about themselves. Info that inevitably lead to Joel's death by a golf club (which is quite funny since they implied - Trailer and Interview - that Joel would be a longer part of this game). All that, because NPCs daughter, Abby, (the murderer) from the first game wanted revenge. Yes, that is essentially the whole plot. Yet another badly written revenge story. The character you played throughout the first game, just dies an incredibly stupid, undeserved and unspectacular death, so naughty dog can introduce their boring revenge story trope and a very boring (Antagonist). I wrote antagonist like that, because Abby isn't really portrayed as Antagonist, but a protagonist of her own story now. You have to play with the Joel replacement and you get gaslighted into feeling compassion for her: Her playing cutely with dogs, giving some flashbacks regarding her father's death. Also... regarding father's death: To make the story work, naughty dog changed some things from the first game's plot. They completely changed the doctor's ethnicity from african american to white american. I have absolutely no idea why. Then they started to feed you the narrative that Ellie was a guaranteed cure, even though she wasn't. They essentially changed parts of TLOU1 to make their fanfiction-tier story in TLOU2 work. Then they created this artificial infighting between Abby and Joel, because HE prevented HER death and hence HE risked the lifes of thousands of people.
I felt no sympathy for Abby whatsoever btw. The story felt forced and the game merely used TLOU1 as a stepping stone for their entirely new setup.
Now to the finale... Ellie has fought through hundreds of people to get to Abby, the final fight occurs and what happens? Nothing, she lets her go. Bravo!
The only good things were the Ellie and Joel flashbacks

I don't know who thought it was a good idea to force you to spend half of the game playing as the character who killed Joel. Speaking of, it's seems the writers completely forgot how cautious of a person he was. They tried their best to make me feel sorry for a girl who's dad was going to kill a teenage girl without her consent. Did not work. Couldn't even finish the game, just looked up what happens. After all that you don't even get the satisfaction of killing her. Visuals are the only redeeming aspect of the game. Expand

And yeah, I'm a gamer. Just this year alone I've played 3-4 of my all time favorite games. Persona 5 Royel, Final Fantasy 7 (Remake) and The Last of Us 2. I played the first one at release, waited 7 years on it. And it was worth it.

The visuals are nice and very satisfying for 2020 standards but are hardly as groundbreaking as corrupt reviewers are making out to be. As the for the story, this game deliberately makes an attempt to destroy and bastardise the legacy and fate of beloved characters in order to cheaply subvert expectations and push a political agend. The rest of the story feels lacklustre and unsure of its own endgame and is constantly bringing the narrative to a halt with the overuse of flashbacks and different character perspectives . The ending is a disgusting disservice to the efforts of the player and leaves beloved characters in a depressing and hopeless scenario whilst characters hated by the fan base are set up for a sequel. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A long awaited game for everyone. But the disappointment with this game is great. The story is a huge disappointment in every way, they destroyed the character Joel. They deconstructed everything that pleased the first game, and that made him famous and loved all over the world. The graphics and game-play are very good, as well as the soundtrack, but that's about it. I have no motivation to continue playing. I don't even want a sequel to that, they dismissed Joel very early, he still had a lot to offer in the plot. How did Sony allow you to do this with your most beloved IP? All of us fans of The Last of Us are very upset with this game. Expand

Story wise there were a few things i didnt like ( one specific characters death) but, the story was deep and had meaning i learned to like a character i initially hated, that being said I learned from this game make your own choices about how you feel about something just because someone says a restaurant is bad doesn't mean dont try it we each have different taste. Side note im all for the support of LGBT community but story wise it felt a bit forced not speaking on ellie, but with one specific new character we meet on our journey as abby After hearing their story about them actually being a girl I just was a lil mind boggled about how many main characters shared that same story , but hey nothing wrong with just seemed a tad bit forced story wise, Yes i know abby is a SHE NOT A HE lol, but like i said play the game for your self make your own decision Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's **** It's a poorly-made teen novel. A cheap lesbian novel in a post apocalyptic with a poor script and characters developer in a world where one of the lesbians gets pregnant lol wtf.
Where was the dystopian / apocalyptic plot of the previous one? The game is based on Ellie's personal relationship and Abby LOOOL THAT IS A **** NO ONE IS INTERESTED ABOUT ABBY'S PAST.
Everything was perfect until the DLC. It is a very long game showing a rebellious teen **** lesbians and a Joel who is killed on the first 2 hours of the game, knowing that the same character in the previous game, when he meets Ellie with a **** knife, he almost killed her and did not even trust in her. WHILE HERE... YOU TRUST EASLY INTO A GANG OF STRANGERS AND THEY KILL JOEL AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME LOL ahh ... but after all, the ending is a CRINGE masterpiece. If they changed the name of the game, maybe it would be a good game, because this is not the last of us. Life Is Strange for example, like so many, is A MASTERPIECE.

I can even tell you that it is the worst game in history. It's ridiculous. And better not to mention the SJW, and the disgusting and ridiculous fan service. When a game has the overtones of "we are going to open your head by forcing political and sociable ideologies" it is automatically a score of 0/10. Whoever says it's a good game, can suck my balls bag, because this is not a good game at all. I would rate it 0.5/10 at most because the gameplay in the fights improved a bit.

98% of people do not mind that there are homosexuals, trans in games in the middle of 2020, what ruins everything is that they want to force an ideology in vain only for a minority with the mere fact of selling it, ruining a story with a poor script/storyline. When people mix this kind of thing in art, it's crap, and worse when in the video game environment where the vast majority don't care if you're gay or not, if you're nobinary or asexual or the crap you are. We want to play and have a good time. until dlc is 10/10 the game. This part was not necessary if they presented it like this. The vast majority say that this **** would not even become canon of the BAD it is.

If you think that people hate this game "unjustifiably "(for homosexuality) then you have **** floating in the skull. The day that people know to understand when a concept is exploited, sold to the masses and forced (ruining art), we going to progress as humans. Games are for distraction and fun, not for forcing and mixing them up with crappy politics. If you want to consume that, turn on the television.

Please don't mess up the art with political propaganda and disgusting fan service anymore, it doesn't work. Learn from a **** time.

I understand there is an overwhelming amount of people disliking the game and at first I didn’t understand why till the very end. However, for the same reasons, I love the game. Because it forces you to make the same decisions as Ellie and Abby and that makes the weight even heavier. I remember having to take breaks from the game because of the emotional weight and anticipation of a violent confrontation because I feared another beloved character dying by MY OWN HANDS! I cannot think of a better example of interactive media. So I’m not sure what the deal is with everyone on this site ... maybe genuine disappointment? Or more likely organized review-bombing/trolling?

But either way, let’s have a conversation about the difference between “bad” and “I didn’t get what I wanted.”

“Bad” is clunky controls. “Bad” is repetitive environments with little-to-no detail. “Bad” is terrible graphics and uninspired world-design. “Bad” is awkward voice acting. “Bad” is forced dialogue. “Bad” is no effort being put into a game on the part of the developers.

“Bad” is NOT: this character died but I wanted them to live! “Bad” is NOT: you play as female characters the whole game and that’s stupid! “Bad” is NOT: there are gay characters in it and that makes me feel weird! “Bad” is NOT: things didn’t go the way I expected!!! 0/10

Those complaints are the epitome of “I didn’t get what I wanted.” And that is fine. It sucks to be disappointed.

But that does not make something “bad.” This game is simply fantastic. The world-design is beautiful and the environments are detailed and varied. The voice acting is alarmingly naturalistic and the writing is realistic and relatable. The story is compelling and the characters are incredibly engaging. The gameplay is fluid; during combat, the enemies respond to your choices organically and realistically.

This is a game that Naughty Dog clearly put a LOT of effort into. And I’m sorry it you “didn’t get what you wanted.” But.

    That’s a you problem.

Good Great Stunning for graphic, game play. Some nice action and scene. Plot and story though, don't compare this **** to the first one. Whoever come up with the plot with Joel's execution, delivered it poorly. Stop making game. Go living a sad miserable life instead.

Went through the whole game and I wish that they could've fake Joel's death to get him off the hook then big surprise by the end. Or Abby got infected by the ending then a sour revenge turn into forgiveness that can be respect. Too easy...... that execution is too easy for Joel. This is the end of the series. A cheap shot for part 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hope the developers read these comments. As a game developer myself, I always did, even when I disagreed with the comments. This review is for them:
    -The Good/Great:
-Environments/Sound/Physics/Tech Art was the best I have seen in a game. An unbelievable masterpiece. You should all be proud. The Art Director and team deserve a medal.
-The inclusion of diverse characters. Well done. I applaud you. My favorite character was Trans-gendered and it's nice to see.

    The Bad:
-Gameplay. There is a lot to write about here. The gameplay was one of the worst parts of the game. Overall, the level of violence was too much.
-Game Design. This is the same game mechanic as Drake's/The Last of Us/Day's End... For goodness sake let me pick up more than 9 (that's right NINE) bullets. Ridiculous. There are many other ways of ensuring a player can't horde bullets. Lazy.
-Story. There is a lot written about this so I won't' rehash all of this here. The characters weren't true to who they were in the first game. As an example, there is no way Tommy would have pushed Ellie to go find Abby at the end after Ellie had settled down (this was Tommy's whole motivation for creating a community!!). And he certainly wouldn't have said "well I can't go". BS. One example of dozens.
-And my worst gripe: Abby. This was handled so poorly. I absolutely detested playing this character for what she did to Joel... and that was half the game! If you want to understand my score, that is the major part.

Here's the key take-away: PLAYABLE CHARACTERS NEED TO BE LIKEABLE. You need to connect with them on some level and Abby was a dispicable character... DO NOT MAKE 'The Last of Us 3' WITH ABBY AS A PLAYABLE CHARACTER !!!!!!!!!! That will ruin the game. Period.

    Good luck.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a solid game with a good story. Sick of hearing all these manbabies complain they didn't get what they were expecting. Yes there are some pacing problems, but if you actually play past where Joel gets killed you will find an incredible game with a deep character study about revenge and what that does to a person. Did we really believe we would get a happily ever after story with Joel after he effectively ends the world's last chance at beating the zombies effectively? We have known Ellie is a lesbian for some time, get over it. Yes a main character is trans, but its woven into the story in a meaningful way. Sometimes art offends the viewer, and this is a case of that. But just because you may not like what the story is because it doesn't align with your head cannon is does not mean its garbage. 9/10 because the pacing is frustrating. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just have to give it to Naughty Dog, they've really done it. Like most people I loved the first game and the story of Joel going from father to a selfish monster to a human being again at the end. A human being that ..as we all know dooms all of humanity when he slaughters the few good people left in the world that is actually trying to develop a cure. The way Naughty Dog was still able to make us somewhat agree with Joels horrific decision is truly an achievement on it's own. On to the part 2. In many ways this game made me thing of the excellent film "Sympathy For Mr Vengeance" and "Old Boy", 2 out of 3 films in Park Chan-wooks trilogy of revenge. It starts out simple with our protagonist seeking revenge from a perspective we know, but then shifts this perspective to a completely new one that shines a new light on the characters involved. We get to learn that Joels killer isn't actually a bad person, in fact it's easy to argue she's a pretty good person. She's driven by a desire for revenge but refuses to kill Ellie or Tommy because she's not a blind cold killer - she's just after the one person that killed her father and doomed all of humanity for his own selfish reasons. After the initial chapters as Abbey I soon started to sympathise more with her than Ellie. I felt bad for Ellie, I could understand her anger and frustration with loosing her father figure but I wanted her to stop. But she simply can't. As she describes it herself when she finds out what really happened at the end of the first game, Joel took away her reason to be. She could have saved humanity, meant something. She never got to forgive Joel for what he did. She's basically a traumatised mess full of hate. I'd actually give this game a 9 instead of a 10 but seeing how many people score this a 0 just because they're buying in to the hate-hysteria of the internet I think we can throw in a little extra point just to piss someone off.

The 9 is because no matter how well written and well acted this game is - and how much money is thrown at this production I still feel the ending is a bit messy in the pacing. Not that I dislike the ending but there were too many scenes in a row that felt like it could have been the end and it would still have ended on the same emotional note.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having played 8-10 hours into the game I've given up. I applaud the team at naughty dog for the amazing graphical fidelity of the game and its sound and animation. But I've officially lost interest in the series.
Having seen many videos repeatedly of Joel's head being smashed in with the club by Abby and having played through it myself, I now feel completely disconnected from the world that was created in the first part,I don't even feel sad anymore, all that goes through my mind is "this is the stupidest s**t I've seen. I boot up the game and play it for a 20 minutes tops and quickly quit it and find something else to play at this point.
It being a couple of days post launch now, I can comfortably say, f**k this game. F**k it for ruining the world, characters and story for me. I'm done.
Its good if you enjoyed it, its good that you could and I won't fault you for it. But there's too much wrong for me to forgive. Too much.
This world that you'd made naughty dog, is now dead.
And the best part? You killed it as unceremoniously and mindlessly as Abby did Joel. Good job.
This had the potential, the setup and all the key ingredients of something mind shattering. But sadly you decided nope, we're gonna f**k with this up so bad.
I really feel sad I spent money on this pile of steaming s**t. I really wish you hadn't done this.
I can't give it a zero, not with the visuals, sound and the clearly visible amount of work put into the design it offers, but you killed this series for me.

Not worth your time. This is what you get when "woke" people try to write a game that caters to that crowd. Ruined a 10/10 first game in less than 2 hours, well done. One point for the graphics and Jesse.

I've loved the first game but this one really disappointed me. Only the graphics is worth because the story is ruined. They killed the franchise.

2020 wokeness infests and strangles what was great game potential. Unlikeable characters, unimproved control and gameplay mechanics, agenda driven story. Its a mess.

This game was amazing, its not Last of Us 1 but its has its own journey its own story its own character development. Don't listen to all the view bombers who watched YouTube content creators give their opinion then they came here to quote the exact words of the content creators. At least rent the game and give it a shot for yourself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

I really enjoyed this game and the story was great. Sad that obviously a lot ppl have problems with female main character, who is also a lesbian and bad ass at the same time. I am not finished yet, but still the game makes lot of fun and the story telling is awesome. Don't miss this game! If you loved the first game you will enjoy this game too!

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
