I don’t care if Abby is trans and Ellie is a lesbian, I just don’t care (good on them) what I do care about is that you’re forced to play as a character that I just don’t care about (Abby) I found myself during her gameplay parts, rushing and skipping the cinematic scenes. Not even looking about, looking for notes and clues and cards like I do with Ellie in her play through. I just don’t think Abbys story is good. You built up a character development in the Last of us 1 to have it shattered in Last Of Us 2, then make us play a character that we don’t want to be (maybe some people do). I get Mr Miller has to die, it’s good for the story, but the way he went out is just ridiculous. The Last Of Us 1 was profound and groundbreaking. Number 2 is just meh...if I was asked to sum it up in one word it’d be meh. I remain - Pag Expand

I love it, and I'm still processing all my emotions over it. But yeah the game, the ending it's beautiful, powerful, and very HUMAN. The entire story is wrapped around the concepts of cause and effect/confronting the consequences for your actions. Not everyone is going to agree with it, not everyone is going to like it, but frankly that's their choice. And I'm happy it exists.

The fake quarantine imo has a lot to do with what the hell is going on: many people's minds are literally becoming numb being taken away from the depths of themselves AKA limited to superficial consciousness, while certain other people who are also stuck at home, are "expanding" and feeling growth and going and doing certain things outside of their house while also agreeing that COVID-19 is a very serious disease to be taken into account, and they are also people who have worn a mask at a certain time just to go get the mail. Because it turns out that (speaking from a first world perspective) that if one million people die in three months by a single disease never heard of before, then the entire moral earth is also in danger of dying, and therefore a pandemic and a quarantine shall be called. Okay, I understand, is the responsible and reasonable response. But then all governments world-wide realize that due to over-population, quarantining the sick from their societies would be too much a hassle. So out of sheer laziness, they demand that YOU must stay inside, that you must follow their rules mindlessly which is actually NO RULES AT ALL. As a result, conflict is ensuing that is purely psychological and refined to this point and manner. Many people have killed themselves, degenerates showed themselves destroying shops and setting things on fire to "send a message", and CHAZ exists, and the police are as much a scapegoat for people's boredom to feel powerful as Hitler's and anti-semites' were in saying the Jews were the cause and the real problem and needed to be 'solved', in place of one's own outrage against unreason, and nothing else, which just then happens to be assimilated with violence and random lives being ended. This is inarguable, whether you like it or not. THIS mentality is then imbued into a videogame. I say "then" because of the way I started the order of this writing, but in reality obviously one did not cause the other. But this mentality and the release of this game with this kind of thinking is huge, and what exactly is the mentality? The great negativity in self-awareness and blaming of other people or people's as the root for your own problems, and then situating oneself to the point of saying that controlling or hurting someone else shall solve mine, perhaps dramatizing small back-and-forth dialogue conversations/heated arguments as LITERAL serious means for "war". Sound familiar? People know what I am talking about, we've all laughed at this. So, then one sees THIS happen in a videogame, but it had a predecessor. What was that like? There was a main character with so many individual traits that grant him the status of nigh heroic, along with a side character who is absolutely enjoyable, maybe corny at times, but is also part of the entire plot moving in the first place, and what we find is a grand transposition and misplacement of values when thinking of comparing this game to the game we have today. In the first game, Joel is established as heartbroken, suffering, hardened, but also we find moments where he is vigorous and alive. Ellie is your average 14 year old who has also just lost people she loved or felt highly affectionate for. Then we realize that she has a trait where she can't get infected---and the plot itself is simplified and understood ideally for the audience. Keep her safe, keep her alive, possibly a cure, as we predominantly play as Joel. Now I then BECOME JOEL, I AM heroic, my daughter was the one lost in the first few moments of the game, I am the one who cries when Joel finds elliie as she butchered David during the end of the winter chapter, etc. THISISWHATVIDEOGAMESDO. In comparison to books, films, sculptures, painting, other mediums of art, video games directly impact people in a refined way, a very refined way. I do not have to imagine certain things that videogames show for me, and the greatest games offer a balance between what I can do indepently within the game, while ALSO following the creators' lead, because that ultimately is what one does when playing a created game, even though the word "created" feels redundant in the sense I just conveyed. SO in TLOU2, the lead I follow makes no sense, like this quarantine thing, using the human debility of pity, in other words, assigning another one's SELF as one's own self, in order to understand a message or get a message across. How can I do that if it is ONLY myself that plays your game individually? Do you see the connection between this and the tyranny of the "qurantine"? A virus that is new and harmful TO YOU , but then assumed to be that way FOR EVERYONE? ASIF you know and understand everyone? This is a will to "equality" & is disguised as "revenge is bad". **** Expand

First my most likeable character gets killed and there is nothing I can do to prevent it ... I kill people to get to the end and the last hope I actually had for this game is dashed because choice is taken away from me again at the very end. I don't like this story. It makes no sense.

In my opinion the story is not quite as good as the first game mostly due to being split into two playable characters, but this can easily be overlooked as the characters are well developed. Most of the negative reviews this game has been receiving are vastly blown out of proportion and my assumption is that most people did not give the game a chance and jumped on the bandwagon of hate.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am going to base my review ln the main occurrences that happened in the game and usually the parts that people have either disagreed or disliked the game entirely

I fully understand the death of Joel was very stupid, disrespectful and forced, Joel is a smart character and should know all ways of ambushes since he was a hunter himself, Naughty Dog had yet to force this so the narrative can move on, they even made Tommy have the decency to say that they lived a few miles away, to bloody strangers.
This is only one point that I dislike from nd, but it does make sense this was because of how Joel killed Abby's father, although no one really does care for Abby as a character at this point, you need to understand that he killed so many people, it seemed inevitable that someone wanted vengeance

After this Ellie set off for revenge for Joel, killing off every friend related to Abby before reaching her and never doing it a lot of people have got mad and send hate for not killing off Abby seeming that this whole game was pointless, not killing Abby has a big meaning, ellie is breaking a cycle, if ellie ever killed abby, Lev wouldve wanted revenge, leading the cycle forever.

Either way this game was all really and entirely about forgiveness, it shows a lot of this in Ellie's memories, even the one at the end on how she was learning to forgive Joel on what he had done to her in the firefly hospital, we you think about it, its obvious.

Neil said this game will be about hate but he missed one thing on purpose to not ruin the game

The reason for bad scores is this story is not very good and the gameplay is nothing special. Even critics who like the game said it was very depressing. There is a difference between playing a work of art which has lessons and playing a work of propaganda meant to teach you lessons first. Everyone knows revenge is bad and a cycle of violence is wrong we don't need to play a 25 hour game to get that message. Create a bad work of propaganda put in some identity stuff and then when you are criticized for creating ineffective art you can just say your critics are criticizing the work because of the identity issues. What a failsafe plan. It is possible for woke people to make a woke game that is bad woke doesn't guarantee a good game. It is possible for a sequel to be worse than original in fact that is often the case. People don't like this game because of the story destroying what they loved in the first game. Wokeness has nothing to do with it because the first game was woke too. Stephen King wrote some terrible novels some of them sequels as well. Druckman and company can make a terrible game and we can criticize it on those merits. The first game was woke and we loved it. Wokeness if not a factor in this criticism. Expand

Killing the character we all know too well, and nothing at the same time, was the biggest mistake of the developers. Not even killing it, but killing it in the way it was, was really humilliating, and I felt the humilliated person was ME as the player. Making you play as the killer in the second half of the game made me not sympathize with it, quite the contrary, made me hate it. This game was an utter insult to everyone who played the first one. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay. I really tried to like this game. This game should have been good and i do believe that it is a good game but only if you have not played the first game. The quality of the voice acting is amazing, the graphics (at least on the PS4 pro) are great and i think the environments from the aesthetics of each location down to the environmental storytelling, through notes and such, is done superbly. Hell actually playing the game is quite fun. Where this game lacks is its prime narrative.

The last of us part two is entirely unfaithful to the characters that were set up in the first game. If your reading this review i am sure you already know that Joel dies. This alone has been a very controversial event and i want to break it down a little bit. People are not angry that Joel is dead. Everyone knew he was going to die, i didn't see any of the pre-release spoilers but i knew Joel was going to die. It makes sense in this world and for his character. the previous title already made it very clear that Joel is a man who has very few moral lines left to cross, who has done things that will mean his hands will never be clean. It makes sense that something from his former years will catch up to him. What has pissed people off is the way they handled his death. I think its very naive of naughty dog to think that killing off one of the most beloved characters in gaming would bring anything but backlash.

Games are a medium which need to, to an extent, evoke emotion and that is one thing this game dose not lack. I was sad, angry but mostly disappointed that such a massive personality in gaming would be removed in such a half arsed, brutal way that is handled so poorly. Joel as a character that we are invested in deserved a better death that being helplessly tortured in front of Ellie, before having his brains bashed in. So your telling me that the continuation of the story, that literally gave me faith and respect for the artists (Devs) that create in this medium, is over. Just like that. bang! done! That is it. One of the most compelling plot devices and relationships in the whole of gaming is done. And maybe i could have forgiven that. Maybe it could have been a good way to drive us as the player and really, really explore what hatred, anger and revenge will do too someone and the consequences of these actions and at first i thought that, that is where it was going. And to an extent they explored this with Ellie's torture scene and the killing of Mel, Abby's pregnant 'friend', and yes it did go further as you see Ellie after coming back from Seattle is suffering from PTSD but this didn't go far enough in my opinion.

I think that one of the key failures of this game is that its trying to be this big sweeping narrative where the bad guys can also be the good guys and vice versa but it just dose not work and it falls flat because we as the player do not care in the slightest about Abby and her motivations. i actually thought Abby's motivation was actually handled quite well. i think that this game being so heavily linked to the firsts ending is a very good idea. but once again we don't care about her. It dose not matter how many sad flashbacks there is or how many zebras you save with Abby's dad. The player, especially if they have played the first game, automatically hates her. And the game has the audacity to push into playing as her so you feel some kind of emotional investment in her as a character but by that point its too late. She has already been portrayed as a **** evil, psychopath which if anything is only supported once you have finished her game-play section. In my honest opinion the third and forth acts where you play as Abby are awful and so uninspired.

Now the ending. Oh my god.
I wont be commenting on any specifics as the final act of the game was not reviled in the leaks from a few weeks back but all i will say is its **** There is no conceivable reason as to why ellie would act the way she dose at the end and yes i know its a commentary on revenge and how a path of revenge will only lead to your own downfall. Its a play on the saying "If your going on a path of revenge, dig two graves" but i still feel this falls flat.

Basically i gave this game everything i could. i tried very hard but it has failed. And one of the worst things about it is that it makes you go through a emotional roller coaster with absolutely no reward or sense that the story is finished. the best parts of this game are Ellie's flashbacks with Joel. So my plead to naughty dog is this. De-canonise this game and do one of three things. One: never ever touch this IP again, Neil cannot be trusted to write another of these games. Two: remake it and tell the story how it should be told. Three: if you do make another game set it as a prequel to part 2 because the flashbacks that explore Joel and Ellie's relationship are the only truly good parts of this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game looks amazing, animations and environments are top notch. Technical side of it is at industry's standard.
But: the story is unsatisfying. If you decide to make a game that gives you no choice in anything except for how to handle encounters, you better make sure the story is compelling. 20 hours trying to catch a person to you let her go in the end? And 10 more hours playing that very person that you are chasing and you pretty much hate by that point? Why bother? Honestly I finished the game just to know the ending (which surprisingly made my impression twice as bad!).
Plus all the annoying flashbacks? Can't Neil just tell a story without flashbacks? I think at one point we were like 3 flashbacks within (yes, flashback within flashback within flashback).
Then the characters, oh boy the characters. Ellie murders HUNDREDS of people along the way, but is shaken by killing 2 or 3 more when the story needs it. Abby is just flat and cliche all over (they killed my dad, so I will spend the next 10 years hunting down the killer).
Don't listen to the critics, its political. Also don't listen to people saying review bombing is based on LG BT issues. I haven't seen any review here so far confirming that. The story is just bad. Either let the player choose, or serve them a good ******* story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Naughty Dog's finest work yet! It might not be what everyone wanted out of it, but it's use of storytelling and how it explores themes on revenge, forgiveness, morality and redemption is well crafted. It's definitely a game that is meant to be diverse for people who were fans of the first game's story, but this is a whole new story and the only way people will enjoy it is by taking the time to understand both sides of the situation that goes on among these characters.

Although the game might be polarized by some fans, people might hopefully start to appreciate it more as time goes by. I for one believe these Last of Us games will go down in history and be considered one of the greatest video games ever made. If there is a Part 3, this game might even be considered The Empire Strikes Back of the trilogy. I am definitely eager to see if Naughty Dog will decide to give this franchise one last game to not only complete it as video game trilogy, but to Ellie's story overall. This game alone proves that she is the true protagonist of these games.

Ignore the completely unwarranted hate and buy this game. The story is not as good as the first but it's still brilliant and gripping.

The complaints are so weak and fickle and majority are based after only a few hours of gameplay.

The story is a boring revenge plot filled with unfulfilled characters and a story forces all the nuance that was once found in the original LOU to be squeezed out of the game to fit thier boring revenge plot storyline.

The pacing of how the story is told is horrible, with long winded parts of the game rehashing obvious character motivations tied in with other characters that felt completely wasted. If you're a big LOU fan and have been waiting for this game, I reccomend you wait till it goes on sale or borrow it if you can to play it, that way if you end up hating it as much as I do you won't feel like you wasted a lot of money.

    #1. The game is gorgeous.
#2. The gameplay is solid if a bit out-dated.
#3. The story is erratic, I remember them saying on twitter that it was hate begets hate.

The story is erratic at best and fails to tell the story they want to tell. It's literally "Ellie lost everything in pursuit of revenge" while the new character got literally what she wanted. Joel is dead, but she lost some of her 'friends.' I guess that's the loss she had.

At worst the story is paper-thin.

My personal opinion is that they misused Joel entirely killing himself so early in the game.

I'm not particularly mad that he is dead. But the way it does it. They just wanted a shocking scene that no one was shocked by if you've had your head to the internet for any length of time where this game has been mentioned.

I honestly tried to distance myself from the spoilers, which I think I did admirably. I just didn't enjoy the game.

It's not a 1-4. It's a solid six on many levels, but I will not put it above that because of how erratic the storyline is.

The game starts of okey, until we meet Abby. Abby is a terrible written character that we are forced to play with in order to kill off our beloved Joel. Big note; its fine to kill off a character, but in such a retarded meaningless way. Its makes 0 sense. The game should have given us backstory on Abbie so we would be able to feel for her and making this scene understandable. The moment in when Abby kills Joel this is all missing. Straight of the bat we hate this character and nothing what you will tell us will fix that. In part 1 when Joel killed the doctor's, that we could understand, because of the loss of his own daughter at the beginning and the bond he and Ellie grow to have. Ellie is his surrogate daughter. The main problem for fans at heart is not if Ellie is a lesbian or if the game wants to be inclusive, the big problem is the end that in the end is what matters, of course the death of Joel is at least for my painful emotionally to the point that I have felt physically bad but I cope with it as part of a difficult plot (not forgetting that it is presented in a forced and miserable way), what is despicable is that the murderer is released without any kind of felt beyond the motivations of the director to create a third part surely focused on abby, but I wonder who the hell wants that ?, and on top of that leaves you in the situation that everything played is useless without even leaving as optional deciding whether kill her or not and the plot that both boasted of revenge is a fallacy. On paper, the Last of Us 2 has everything it needs to be an instant classic (Shame that multiplayer wasn't included). It was breathtaking graphic, slick and immersive gameplay, and a great amount of accessibly (especially when it comes to difficulty setting). However, everything great about the game from an artistic and technical level is bogged down by one of the worst narratives I've ever experienced. It is Last Jedi and Game of Thrones Season 8 levels of bad, and completely tarnished what me and so many other adored about the first game. Rather than being a continuation of Joel and Ellie's story, Joel is instead thrown the way side for a new character named Abby, who you are forced to play as for a good portion of the game. Abby is one of the most unlikable and irredeemable characters ever in a video game, and honestly deserved to die. But instead, the game forces upon you an incredibly contrived "revenge is bad" narrative that is at odds with how many players will feel while playing. The game is so bleak and depressing that I honestly had a hard time finishing, and to say that the ending was unsatisfying would be a massive understatement.
As the Fireflies would say, "when you're lost in the darkness, look for the light", but the Last of Us 2 seeks to avoid the light at all costs, and it results in an experience that I honestly wish I didn't waste my time with. If you enjoy the game, that's fine, but for me, it is a great insult to what made the original special, and should not exist.
To everyone who said that the Last of Us didn't need a sequel, you were right.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In creating The Last of Us Part 2, Naughty Dog attempts to completely shy away from the beauty and themes of made players love its predecessor. Though the the developers try to create a new complex experience for fans, they end up creating a jumbled experience that forces players into an emotional roller coaster.

For this review, I am not going to talk about the game play and graphics. I feel like Naughty Dog needs to understand that fans of the game don't play the Last of Us for the game play, rather they play for the investing story. With all the specs of the game aside, the story that the games writers created surrounding vengeance falls flat.

First off, writers of the game choose to use Joel Miller, the main character of the first game, only as symbol of sorrow and the past. Naughty Dog has completely thrown away this character, and with it the relationship between Joel and Ellie that players were hoping to see. Joel's death only serves to add emotion, to push to the plot forward, and to emphasize the message that Naughty Dog is trying to convey. I am not saying that Joel shouldn't die whatsoever, I am saying that Naughty Dog should've used the character ins a more meaningful way in the game, allowing the player to still experience the game alongside him. To make things worse, prior to release the game was advertised as if Joel would be a main part of the story line. This choice buy the Naughty Dog is absolutely evil as they are basically promising buyers that the game will be one thing when it is something completely different. Through this, Naughty Dog is forcing players to play through their story.

The poor reviews are most likely by people that haven’t even finished the game, trolls or just some people commenting on it based on the leaks without truly understanding the game. Or just people butt-hurt over the fact that some characters in the game are not exactly like them. The story is rough, gruesome, conflicting and often heart-breaking. The Last of Us is not a happy game, and anyone expecting any different should probably find something else to play. This will truly lead you through a roller coaster of emotions.
It's the most beautiful game I've ever seen, with stunning character design and gorgeous environment. The hair, the eyes, the voice-acting, the performance, the lightning - unlike any other game. In cutscenes, you can really feel the emotions coming from the characters, see it on their faces, hear it in their voice. The infected or the fungus on the walls will leave you disgusted, terrified. The gory mess after blowing up an enemy with a bomb will make you sort of pity them.
The gameplay - the same mechanics as in the first game, but BETTER. You get new equipment, new skills, new weapons. The areas are always huge, sometimes I didn't even know where to go first. This, combined with the ability to crawl under things or squeeze through tight spaces will give you so many opportunities to hide, to kill enemies or to just run away. Sometimes you don't even find enemies if you don't explore certain areas. New people, new infected. Each encounter will keep you on the edge of your seat, not really knowing what to expect. The physics are very realistic.
The story - this is a story of vengeance, how far a person will go to get it and how it can change them. It will make you see that not everything is black and white. Perhaps there is no good and bad. Perhaps not every hero is a hero and not every villain is a villain. They're just people doing what they think is right. It is hard not to say too much and spoil things. I will say that the story made me sad, happy, angry, heart-broken, scared, pissed, conflicted. It made me smile and it made me tear up. And that, I think, is a good thing, because it made me FEEL something. It made me think about what I would do in those situations. As I said, a roller coaster of emotions.
All in all, in my opinion this game is a truly worthy sequel to the first game. Even more frightening and traumatizing. The people that give it a 0 truly don't deserve to give reviews. Naughty Dog took a bold step with this game, and it paid off. Please don't listen to other people's words - try the game for yourself with an open mind and make your own opinion. You may be pleasantly surprised.

The most interesting thing is that players, with a few exceptions, are not happy with the sequel because of the demonstration of minority issues in it. Not outraged by the players and almost unchanged from the first part of the gameplay. Players are primarily unhappy with the storyline and characters.

The continuation story unfolds five years after the finale of the first part. Players control Ellie and set off to explore post-apocalyptic Seattle. This game is an action adventure, more like a thriller with elements of survival.

Players are very fond of the two main characters of the game - Joel and Ellie. But in the first half of the sequel, Joel is brutally murdered by Abby, the daughter of a surgeon who planned to create a cure for a disease that destroyed the whole world. To do this, he wanted to perform an operation on Ellie, after which the girl would die. To prevent this, Joel killed all the doctors, including Abby's father, and saved Ellie.

An amazing game - with a story that drives real emotion into you. The gameplay is phenomenal and the graphics are insane. They told the story they wanted, maybe not necessarily what people wanted to see - but its without a doubt one of the best story telling in recent years.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all, It's a great game. Graphics are amazing, sounds are terrific, but repetitive. Game mechanics are well executed, but nothing groundbreaking.
The only problematic part is the story. They couldn't make you care for the characters as you did in the first game. Dina, Jesse, Owen, Mel? I could not care less for them. Abby is kinda likeable, but it feels really forced.(She also looks comical with the arms.)
The revenge of the revenge of the revenge is over the top too. The death of Joel can be justified, bur the way the writers have done it is dumb. They make Tommy and Joel look stupid when they give themselves out so easily to the wolfs. The PC part of the game also feels forced and sometimes unnecessary. They shove it in your face instead of enlifhtening on the steuggles of these characters.
The first game was so great because you loved the characters. You would kill for them. Part II just won't make this impulse on you, as it lacks such a great story and ending of that story.

Ok, so first of all..... This rating is not for the gameplay or the graphics coz they're AMAZING! But while gameplay is important to me..... Graphics are not, I can play a game with mediocre graphics or older games.as long as there's a good plot to keep me interested. So what I am very upset and heartbroken about is the story which is pure ****

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really liked the first half of the game, as Ellie, but the other half as Abby and the end it's just terrible. I mean, why we have to play as Abby? The character that tortures and kills Joel and Jesse! For the player it's not nice to play with an unbearable and irritating character as her. I was angry and uncomfortable all the second half of the game, and for me, as a player, that was a very negative point. it's like they want us to empathize with her, with her father death, the two Scars and the WLF group. We wanted from the start Ellie's revenge, not Abby's adventure and feels. At the end, when we have the only opportunity to kill Abby, we just let her go. In that way Ellie's journey to kill Abby has no sense, even all the hundreds of people that we killed to get to her and all the people we losed, for nothing! The graphics, the playability, the details and soundtrack are very nice, but what this game makes it special is the storyline and characters. I'm really sorry for the people who waited 7 years for this terrible experience. I was very confident in the narrative work of Naughty Dog, but this with no doubt, was a very disappointing game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 7 years! To get a game full of inconsistencies. Full of plot holes, boring characters, and No Joel and a new Ellie full of nothingness.

TLOU is indeed a great game, a storytelling masterpiece. this sequel, is another game completely. There are so much better ideas to get a decent story. It's not about only removing the main protagonist from the beginning. It's the how, the when, the why.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This games only saving grace is its visuals, otherwise we get this SJW pro lesbian farce of a dumpster fire. Ellie gets saved by Joel over and over and she craps on him constantly. EMPOWERED WHITE WOMAN I dont need no man, so ungrateful. Then you have Abby the terminator my god it's so terrible then you get the gender confused asian girl. Just a constant SJW port-a-john. I have tried to post a low score but it keeps saying 503 error on metacritic, so I will post this in the 10's and see what happens...games trash Expand

Doesn't matter how good it looks or even plays. If the story sucks in a story-driven game, then it sucks

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
