The Last of Us Part II is so disconnected from the first game. There's literally 0 consistency in character writing, plots. The whole game is just a different short stories patched together that didn't need to be told. This game was honestly a waste of everybody's time. Also the environment and level design is subpar compared to the first game.

Gameplay is awesome and engaging, as expected.
Visually, it is also very good. The environment is immersive and detailed.
However, the main reason one plays these games is for the story, and sadly it falls very flat in that regard.
All the minority representation is wasted on a continuously looping and predictable revenge plot between Ellie and Abby.
The timing is awful when introducing Abby as a playable character.
Also, sometimes Ellie does wildly out-of-character decisions constantly, to the point that it feels like a "I have to do this because of reasons" moment.
New characters are bland and feel like wasted potential, but it doesn't matter, as most are killed to give and absurd lesson of "killing is wrong", as if the player was an idiot.
All in all, character development and relatabiliy are almost completely sacrificed in order for the plot to advance.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After waiting so long for this game I was thoroughly disappointed. I thought the first one was excellent and the writing in it was great including the unexpected turn the story took at the very end. I didn't read or watch any spoilers or leaks for the sequel before playing it so I went in fresh and hopeful for another great game. Here is what I didn't like about it. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Firstly, I'm not bothered by the gay/trans characters in the story. I didn't feel like those elements were overly pushing an lgbt agenda or pandering to that community. What I thought was terrible was playing at the "antagonist" for nearly half the game. I didn't care about Abby's back story and still don't. I didn't want to play as her at all or know her. Being forced to "know her as a person" didn't make me want to kill her any less. That entire part of the game ruined the experience. It got me to a point where I was just playing to finish it and be done with it, not because I cared what was going to happen next. This game is more about Abby than Ellie. I know many people are upset about killing Joel, but I feel that was a natural progression in the story and honestly a necessary one to flesh out the story of Ellie... Except that the story of Ellie gets lost in playing as her sworn enemy and being engrossed in a war between the psuedo military and the "earther" group (that are also apparently bigots). I didn't care about any of that. I think myself like most people were expecting a game about Ellie (not having to fight her as someone else) and if that's what you wanted, you really didn't get much of it. You got more about Abby and the WLF and honestly I couldn't care less about any of them. And then, the ending, after Ellie sacrifices literally everything including her ability to play guitar, she just let's her sworn enemy sail off into the sunset after the whole "hey let's introduce this other random faction as a plot device" fight. Overall it looked nice, played well, but the writing was a huge fumble for me. Really bummed about it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fell way short of what it could have been by killing Joel as brutally as they did so early on. Also, trying to force the player to empathise with Abby by playing as her for so long just makes us hate her and the devs more. It completely takes away player control... just like when we were forced to watch Joel's murder through the eyes of a helpless Ellie. Playing as Abby strips the player of any agency in the whole bloody sh*tsh*w of a game. We just take a backseat as boring, forgettable characters die like flies. When the game forces us to make morally reprehensible contributions to these characters deaths, it then delights in chastising us later because ReVeNgE iS bAd. The other main feature of TLOU2 is love triangles that don't add anything to the game. The sheer amount of focus given to these in the game's narrative feels out of place against the backdrop of an apocalypse, especially given neither is concluded before - you guessed it - one or more constituents of those pathetic triangles are killed. Throw all of this together with a convoluted and anti climatic ending, and you have TLOU2. Expand

The first Last of Us was great as it seemed to have much more of an intense survival aspect and not knowing whats coming next.. Being that this whole game is about revenge on actual people and not the "infected" totally felt like a 180 for me and makes the story line less in suspense. Yes there are parts with the infected you must survive from, but if you are looking for that same feel as the first one...good luck. Honestly the best parts of the game are the movie/cut scenes. Whenever i start playing a new game that i really want to enjoy i hope that i don't finish it too soon. This game wants me to get through it as quick as possible and then delete it off my system. The last of us part 2 however is not that game. The last of us part 2 is an absolute dumpster fire. I feel naughty dog did a disservice to its fans of the first game. The trailer was designed in a way to where you can tell the company knew the game wasn't going to be liked. This was a desperate attempt to get sales up and isn't even the worst part. The game in itself is absolutely terrible. The gameplay itself is pretty good but the writing is absolutely terrible. The pacing is off, the game's sequence of events would actually work better in a different order because it's terribly put together. It's fine to kill off a character but if that character is the face of the franchise then don't kill them off in the first 2 hours in the dumbest way you can think of. This game forces you to play as a new character with little to no development and makes the previous protagonists the monsters of the game. You liked the old characters? Hell no you're a terrible homophobic hater who only dislikes the game to get at Neil. The game couldn't have been executed more poorly. In my opinion this game is the biggest waste of 60 dollars but if you HAVE to get it buy a used copy. So many people have returned this piece of crap that the used copies actually rival the new ones. But be aware if you do buy a used or new copy of this game some places are no longer taking returns because the game has come back in droves. Take my advice and steer clear of this game. Expand

I had been anxious about the second part of the last of us, and after the leak occured I stay away from any information related, cause I didnt wanted anyone ruining the experience. My expectation was high since the first game was a masterpiece, and just like uncharted I was expecting same as uncharted I was expecting more of the same formula with enhanced graphics, enemy AI, and a more expanded world to explore. That would be enough for me to love the game if the characters we loved had some missions to accomplish, and try to form a bond between joel and ellie like father, daughter. But no they had to do the fans wrong. They killed our favorite character, turn ellie into a unrecognizable person and have to make sure to push their sexual ideals and feminist beliefs onto the fans. Neil druckmann, really want to be accepted by the LGBT community, that he would go as far as to destroy and studio and his legacy. I hope he doesn't work crating for sony anymore. Stay away from this game if you haven't played. Just do what I did played the first game on ps3 a couple of times, and the remastered on the ps4 once, and I'm about to play it again soon, I want to remember ellie as that curious little girl with funny quotes, and smart remarks, and how she won Joel's feelings during their travel adventure. In a singleplayer game the main focus is the story, it affects 80% of the experience, graphics doest matter if the story is good, but when the story is this bad, there's something wrong, most bad reviews are rated as homophobic and anti-lgbt, but it's not the case here. This game is a **** show story-wise, so many flashbacks, even one inside another, they say revenge isn't Worth it, but how can you sell something that doesn't conclude itself in the manner it was sold in the first place? It really deserves the hate, they coul make Abby spend more time.with Joel, starting to get conflicting thoughts about her revenge, even against her friends. The story telling is elementary at best, at no point was I stricken with awe and wondering how someone came up with this plot. Shock value for the sake of shock value is meaningless, they changed way too many key plot points and designs for this to even be considered the same game with the same characters. The only scene I felt like I was playing The Last of Us was in the Museum flashback. They also destroyed the best PlayStation exclusive and I could see this actively damaging the sales for the PS5. If you were expecting another Last of Us game with Joel and Ellie actually behaving like themselves instead of morphing into completely different people, this is flat out not it.

The overall themes are very clear but come across trying too hard to be deep and can almost feel insulting to the players intelligence sometimes . Such a shame as the team is talented and the first game + DLC where very strong both in pacing and story. There was also strong diversity representation in the earlier games that was done in a way that serviced the story more gracefully and did not feel like ticking a box. The characters you turn up for are treated poorly. Better handling of Elle and Joel would have left space for Abby and Lev to shine. This game tries so hard at killing their original image that it successfully takes away the charm of the reason it has been so successful, as if it is disgusted with its own DNA. It pains me to write this review and I truly hope they bring Elle back from this unnecessarily overly dark place and fix the HBO show with stronger stories. 7 years is too long to wait between most creative projects and it shows. Naughty Dog are good visual game developers but their creative narrative team have hurt themselves. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us is my favorite game.
Normally I am unsure about a sequel being made for any game due to fearing that it would be ruined, but not for this game. I’ve complimented and respected Naughty Dog more than any other game developers. I watched only the first two trailers, avoided all spoilers, and I was expecting this game was going to be just as amazing as the first.

However that is not what was done, and I’ve never been more disappointed.

Joel did nothing wrong, and it seems people really don’t understand it correctly. Joel and Ellie are treated horrifically by the Fireflies. Ellie is unconscious and was suffocating, and Joel was trying to get her breathing again and he’s even calling out for help yet the fireflies assault Joel stopping his attempt to save her and nearly getting Ellie killed. After barely receiving a thank you, Joel is told that Ellie is going to be murdered and that they both don’t even get to say goodbye. They don't even give Joel the decency rewarding him with what was originally promised, instead he's ordered to leave at gunpoint. Ellie is treated even worse, they treat her with complete disrespect and don't even allow her to recover from nearly drowning or to wake up and allow her to know what's going on. Not even 24 hours after the first immune person they've ever seen arrives and they're preparing to kill her.

I never expected Joel to live and I wasn’t disliking the game because he died. It was diffidently angering, but it wasn’t a problem to me. However now that I have seen the one trailer I understand why so many people are upset about it. It’s completely filled with false advertisement and is a huge lie.

There was no need to add nudity into the game, and I’m not just talking about Abby, Ellie too. Ellie being half nude was just an excuse to sexualize the character and nothing more. There could have been multiple other ways to achieve the same type of scene without sexualizing Ellie. Abby’s sex scene was awful, and her appearance has nothing to do with it. Another excuse to just sexualize a character and add porn into the game. Any game developer who adds porn into a game to "make it better" I have no respect for. People need to stop being so disgustingly lustful. For some reason people think it’s okay to sexualize everything, but it’s not. It’s actually horrible.

Whether you care or not this game was very clear on shoving an opinion in your face. The developers had stated that as a fact. They should have focused on making the game a game, and not some garbage propaganda. The problem wasn’t what was in the game, it was how it was done.

Character development was awful, and then anything that was good was destroyed by the poor story directive. Ellie didn't even feel like the main character.

There were so many major story failures in this game. Somehow Abby's group of 8, who barely knew the area which has just been hit by a snow storm, and doesn’t have any transport, somehow gets away from Tommy. Tommy travels by horse, knows the area, and knows where they’re going. He would’ve caught up within a week at most and then killed them all. There were so many failures in the story like this and I probably could have accepted most of these flaws if the game had been good but that was not the case.

The story is diffidently 10/10... for what Neil Druckmann and ND wanted to do, they destroyed what should have been just as good as the first one and they did it on purpose. I wish I could at least give a 2/5 for the good parts of the game, but ND not only ruined it, they also made the first game worse by doing so. So even 1/5 seems like a generous rating. I would’ve given 75/100 to 90/100 for up to the end of day 3 as Ellie, 50/100 to 70/100 up until right before the theater as Abby, and upon completing the game and considering the good parts of it 35/100 would be my highest rating.

People claiming that it’s a “dark” game and it’s meant to be the way it is changes nothing. I normally really like depressing games and this is not one of them.

By the end of the game it no longer even felt like The Last of Us.

Maybe it is a “good” game, but as The Last of Us Part 2 it's horrible.

Grafics and gameplay is good but the story is trash and this is the worst thing about the game the player itself don't have motivations to continué playing after they favorite characters are complety idiots and no acording to the personalities of the first game

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game is generally good but the story ruins it. I gave it an honest play through (5 times to be exact) to see if my opinion changed but still i don't care about Abby at all. It has nothing to do with anyone's sexual orientation/preference either, i could care less. Graphics and music are both great, the game play is much like the first with a few things added on but nothing that really stands out to me. What really grinds my gears (and probably most fans of the first game) is the lack of Joel and Ellie time. I thought the beginning was cool with Joel and Tommy but why not let us play as Joel with Tommy clearing out that area and then having "the talk"? Some bad ass brother tag team action would have been a great way to start off the game. We hear about how awesome they were from other people but never see/experience it ourselves. There are so many things they reference in the game that would have been cool to actually do. For example, if the game progressed with Joel and Ellie in Jackson first and showing their relationship growth would have been smarter. Them going on patrols together and showing how Ellie has grown in both combat and wisdom would have been a great platform for her character and fans to experience the changes and the Jackson community more. During this time, the truth about Ellie and the Fire Flies could have been executed. Learning how to swim, playing guitar, etc would have been great to see and would have given players the opportunity to play as Joel if not for just a little bit. I am not saying that Joel had to live in the sequel but at least give him a proper ending. If they really needed to push Abby's character, then have Joel and Ellie on a paired patrol finding them and having one last battle together where Joel dies protecting Ellie from Abby. This may not be the best alternative but damn it would have made me feel better at least and we see this over and over again in the first game where Joel consistently puts Ellie's life before his when there's danger. Getting beat to death from a golf club is great writing?! Also Joel, Tommy, and Ellie's characters are really different from the first and to be honest i don't think Joel or Tommy would ever put themselves in a situation where they are outnumbered with strangers and giving out personal information about themselves...where was this in the first game? I've heard some say that they got softer in Jackson but then freaking show me that! There are too many "implied" things they are counting on you to just get but the story is so forced. Joel's death was purely for shock value, if they needed a reason for Ellie to go on a rampage then the relationship with Dina could have been better developed and she could be the one that died since it was Ellie's love interest. She was pregnant and they wanted to start a life together so that in itself could have been enough fuel to make Ellie go nuts and then the scene with Joel and Ellie "you think i'd let you do this on your own?" would have been possible. Joel goes on the quest for revenge with Ellie (Ellie as the main) and then his death could have happened (still at the hands of Abby where the truth is revealed). If Joel had to be the one dying in the beginning then have an Ellie and Tommy combo going. That would have made so much more sense since they are two closest people to Joel. Tommy knows he cannot stop Ellie, why not go together so at least Tommy can watch over Ellie like Joel did. This would also be something Joel would have wanted and to be sure Ellie would be safe when he's gone and his brother is probably the only person he trusts besides Ellie. Yes Tommy went first in hopes of ending it before Ellie could get involved but again he knows Ellie will follow. Seems like everyone in Jackson is aware of Ellie's habits (even the mayor who lets her go anyways). This would have been sweeter with a chance to play as both Tommy and Ellie while developing their characters for the audience. Flash backs of both their memories of Joel would have been way more meaningful as well. Now onto the issue with Abby, "who the f*Ck is that guy?" - Conor McGregor. Okay i get her story and her thirst for blood and how she mirrors Joel but in all honestly i don't care and being forced to play as her so the audience sympathizes for her is a really risky thing to do. Playing as the killer of our favorite character just doesn't sit well through the entirety of the game and honestly i wanted Abby to die somehow. Why am i playing more than half the game as her?! A quick 'this is where Abby is coming from' would have been enough but her whole story and side characters that we cannot attach to is just too much and forced. Now it feels like they need to do this with any sequel (hopefully not) since we need to see everybody's perspective now. I heard ND say "why do we care so much about fictional characters" but isn't that how you make money? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Warning: This is more of a rant than an actual review. Spoilers all over.

The Last of Us is a beautiful, immersive, emotionally compelling story, with visceral, high intensity gameplay. Unfortunately none of that holds a candle to the disappointment of the story. There are many complaints that can be said about Joel's death at the beginning of the game. It's unnecessary, it paints Joel out of character, etc. but that's not even the biggest thing that irks me about this game. What infuriates me the most is that half way through the game we abandon our stance as Ellie on a warpath for revenge, and pick up as Abby for THE REST OF THE GAME.

Now don't get me wrong, Abby as an isolated character is fine. However, the game sets you up to play as Ellie on her mission for revenge, then halfway through, they pull the rug out from under you and force you to play as the person you hate the most. This is done in such a manner that so blatantly and oppressively FORCES empathy down your throat. Abby is really just a sweet girl who loved her father. She's accepting of all her friends, she loves dogs, hell she even has a romance plot. This perfectly mirrors Ellie's plot of revenge and killing by making Abby look infinitely more like a real protagonist.

Instead of giving us an immersive emotional experience as Ellie getting revenge and closure, we're met with this wild rollercoaster of a journey that goes so far as to force us to fight our beloved Ellie as Abby. If that isn't insulting enough, the game has such a headstrong focus on the idea of "VIOLENCE BAD" that it derails the entire plot. Every time you kill an enemy, one of their teammates shouts out their name in grief, same with dogs. Ellie is painted as an absolute monster for killing off members of what is essentially a glorified terrorist organization, in search of the woman who killed her father figure. Sounds reasonable to me. This pacifist perspective is held so rigidly that the game ends in a pointless stalemate of Ellie just letting Abby walk away, after losing everything.

I see this as the biggest bout of disrespect to the playerbase. It wasn't enough that they killed off our favorite character, then made us play as his killer while forcing the message that "shes not a bad person!" At the conclusion of the game, Abby and Lev go free to live out their lives, and Ellie is left maimed and alone. She lost a friend, a father, a partner, even a child at this point. This whole journey was for nothing and leave our main character broken. All for what? The message that revenge is bad?

I could go on and on about how Abby is such a poorly written character, displayed in a way to force so much misplaced empathy from the player. I could complain that Abby's revenge mission is ultimately more petty than Ellie's, seeing as how her father worked for a terrorist organization and was basically going to murder a child without any consent. I could complain that the game was nothing but virtue signaling and trying to appeal to a holier-than-thou audience. Above all I'm just disappointed that Neil Druckmann did Ellie, Joel, and all of the fans dirty with this game.

If you didn't play the first game, this is an intense and emotionally draining rollercoaster ride. If you played the first game and loved Joel and Ellie, this will only be a big middle finger to you.

This rant doesn't even begin to contain all my thoughts on this game, but I know it's likely nobody will read this anyway so I'll stop here. Congratulations Neil on your best selling game and all of it's focus on what you think are perfect societal issues to sidetrack your game with. I'll be replaying the first game to try to block out this nightmare and remind myself what a compelling story with lovable characters really is.

P.S. It's a dick move to include Joel in a trailer implying that he's with us throughout the game, only to flip the script on us and replace him with a side character for the actual game. **** yall.

The gameplay, graphics, music, atmosphere, were good but I would have preferred that they focused more on the story than on those things, the truth expected more from the story, having the first game as a reference, I think the second part stayed very short, I do not criticize that they have killed Joel the way they did, nor that Ellie has not killed Abby because she is part of her humanity that she still has or any justification they want to give her, even in my opinion she was very Well that they implemented the LGBT + community and all those things, I just think it deserved a better ending after all because of what happened and I think that is what most of the community wanted, it was a very crude ending and they still make us play with the "villain" of the story, I understanding that they wanted us to empathize with Abby, but if it is a sequel, we play it for Ellie and Joel, who are the characters with whom we had already become attached and playing with Abby the story becomes very heavy for the same reason that we came to play TLOU 2 for Ellie and Joel and they still make us fight with Ellie, which I see 0 sense. I didn’t get excited to watch, “Thanos: The Battle for Perfect Balance,” even if I don’t totally disagree with the titan’s ideals. I went to watch The Avengers, who are not perfect in so many ways, but I’ve been with them for over a decade and they have noble ideals; so they have become my family.
I beat the first TLoU three times and spent hundreds of hours in Factions, and thus, Joel and Ellie are my family. Being forced by Neil Druckman and Halley Gross to play half the game as the only person with a steady supply of steroids in the apocalypse, Abby, is just beyond infuriating. Somehow I’m suppose to sympathize with one mass murderer over another. Except, one spent years planning and carrying out revenge in the most barbaric of ways to show a truly sadistic mind.

This attempt to sympathize with a new character is completely forced and ill written. Abby is given all the best weapons, the coolest scenarios to fight through, and of course you get to play fetch and pet the dog. Then you have Ellie who has to kill multiple dogs so she can proceed through the story and even a closeup moment of stabbing Abby’s four legged furry friend. The only logical next step would be to give Ellie an evil goatee and announce her evil plans for world puppy elimination.

Ellie’s face is on the front cover of the game, not Abby. The collector’s edition comes with a statue, of Ellie. The most expensive edition is even named, “Ellie Edition.”

After they instill the evilness that is Ellie, they even try and pull all of her human qualities and force them back onto Abby nearly one for one.
Ellie has the Dinosaurs and Space museum with dad.
Abby the Aquarium and Zoo with dad.
Ellie deals with Jessie and Dina’s love triangle,
    Abby with Owen and Mel.

The comparison is so bland and artificial, in the second half of the game I was literally counting the wasted hours through Abby’s journey wondering when I could actually get back to where I wanted to be, with my Jackson family. I finally just turned off the game when I was forced to attack Ellie to proceed with the story. It tried so hard to make me empathize with Abby’s point of view, but once it forced the path to hurt my family, the game had crossed a line and was done.

Even away from the story, the clickers and human enemies have become so much easier to deal with in this sequel. In the first game shivs were precious because of their rarity, and alerting enemies was a challenge. Here, even on Hard, I can just work my way through almost any encounter with unlimited stealth takedowns and a bit of decent headshot aiming with very little fear of consequences. The only new clicker is just a bullet sponge with all the rest being identical to their previous version. Been there, done that.

On the plus side, the polish on the game’s visual and physical mechanics is one of the absolute best examples of the PS4 generation. The programmers at Naughty Dog deserve much more praise than I could ever give. I just hope their talents are not wasted on another ridiculous story with a forced narrative next time. Yes, the story is ridiculous. It’s trying to show you the horrible ramifications of revenge from a mass killer’s mindset when at the end of it all, nothing fundamentally changed. No amount of guitar mini games is going to save that.

My biggest issue with this game is that people likes it anyway just because of the story being so fake deep and it hurts my soul every time a person praises it as being a masterpiece when it's so plain and lacking, but it hurts me even more knowing that it's probably going to win goty 2020.
Besides all of that, the deaths feel meaningless, joel could have had a way better death scene, the ending is pointless and the relationship between Ellie and Dina felt off to me idk.
I find the visuals, music, gameplay and inclusivity a great redeeming quality but not enough to make me like this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I felt compelled to write a review. I’ve never written one before. Last of us 2 is beautiful. The level design is compelling and the character models are fluid and amazing. Maybe the best I’ve ever seen. The music is so well done. I loved every moment from the subtle build in the background to the audio queues that indicated different things. The game is stunning. I know a lot of people are angry and yelling. Unfortunately, that’s what gets attention. So when many say they are dissatisfied and disappointed in the story development it’s glossed over by the raving mad men. But if we’re being honest, the attention to detail is so stunning, that the creators decided to just hurt anyone who cared about the characters from the original game. To me it felt very “subvert expectations.” The train wreck that was GOT final season as an example. My issues with the game was that it actually was painful to play. Like I tried to “care” about abby and the whole sudden friendship with lev and yara. But I couldn’t care less. And in LOU 1 I cared more about the guy and his little brother that you only spend an hour of gameplay with. So it’s not that they don’t know how to write compelling characters, I feel they just wanted us to be conflicted. As soon as I took over the game as abby, I lost all interest in the game. For one, she was obviously not a murderous unsympathetic person. After all, look what she does for lev and yara. But you’re telling us that she will brutalize a man in front of his “daughter” basically. On top of that, we find out she knows exactly why he killed her father. She saw even them conflicted about killing Ellie for a “cure.” She obviously knew they didn’t even ask Joel, or Ellie if killing her was fine. The fact that she is shown at the beginning as a heartless killer of one of the most beloved characters is a completely acceptable story telling mechanic. But you then ask the gamer to play more than half their time as this person, like they would care at all. Did anyone care for cercei in GOT? You even force them to cat and mouse against Ellie. I litterally remember thinking If I just fail here, can that be the “good end.” All this to just say that the reason I felt that way was because the story was bad. It felt like you didn’t care about us. Just like we didn’t care about abby. The saddest part I think i saw was Druckmann just said “it’s just a video game” in response to some troll comments. But honestly that is kinda how it felt the game was made. Here’s something to think about though. A video game, movie, tv show, or any form of art can transcend a person. You likely can recall amazing journeys you’ve been on because of “just a video game.” So the fact that it felt like the whole game was a brutal journey, with literally no outcome of any kind, just sucked. We know that Druckmann knew what the audience wanted. With the last memory Ellie has of Joel. Where she says she will try to move forward and forgive him. I feel bad for anyone who loved Joel and Ellie for years after the first. Because they were done dirty with nothing of substance when it was all over. When Ellie loses her fingers and then Dina and can’t play guitar anymore, I truly thought to myself “so the creators just want you to feel like absolute trash by the end of this.” I loved the depth from the first one. The ability to feel connected to a character. I never had this in this one. The fact that we ultimately learn Ellie and joel were on good terms when he died and that she already knew the truth about the “cure” still didn’t make the story of her savagery at the end compelling. I think the last of us had such a human and even merciful feel at its core. We couldn’t help but bond with them. And that died in part 2. In the last of us part 2, the last of us truly died. Expand

It was cool to show the problem from different perspectives, to make the need to kill Abby not black or white, but all that the creators achieved is my compassion and love to Abby and a strong need to kill that teenage brat Ellie as soon as possible. By going into retrospective mode you give the plotline a wider meaning, but a retrospective of the whole game from Abby's point of view makes you bored and the problem is you already know she's gonna survive since well, it's a retrospective. You know who lives and who dies for 59% of the game. The seraphins? Just a pothole filler. No need for them in the game. Wasted potential of a cult. It exists and dont ask questions. Did Abby seriously not kill Ellie because a child was sad looking at it? Why did nobody die at the end? They've killed so many characters that I became immune to care about any of them. The games mechanics is pretty much the same as in previous part but that's ok - we play Naughty Dog productions for plot. Which sucks. There's too many stupid encounters. You kill 20 people jump out of the window and there's 20 again. After Abby's day 2 I started to not care and just run. What's the point of dogs or arrows stuck in players body? They came up in maybe two scenes just to irritate the heck out of me and be gone. How come Ellie can kill a clicker silently no probs and the Arnold/Abbie NEEDS A GOD DAMN SHIV?! Why change mechanics for different characters? I'm pissed off because of the guys with machetes and axes. He kills you with a single blow, no need to run - he hits you with 3m range. How many times I can't even count I got killed by a guy hitting me in the face with simple fists because he got me cornered and I can't run. There's boss fights in too small areas where you have problems to run, turn around, aim and shoot because before you even start aiming - you are already being eaten by a big zombie. There's too many scenes 'oopsie I'm coming out of the window and somebody out of nowhere attacks me or the ground underneath me is gone.' dozens of them god damn it. I really hope that if there ever will be part 3 it's going to be about Abby and Ellie is going to be 6 feet underground. I don't care about LGBTQ+ perspective in games as long as it's well made and with a point. it makes sense. Ellie being lesbian? Okay, fine, cool idea. Raising a child together? oK, that's life. Cool. That scar kid? That felt unnecessary and pointed out just to smile to some people. Highly disappointed the plot Leaves you at the starting point minus some people. Expand

    Pros: graphics, attention to details
Cons: forcing an agenda irrelevant to the story, uninteresting characters, plot is a simple revenge game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was cautious going into this game due to the poor way ND treated concerned fans when the first big trailer hits. After playing it, I with that forced politics agenda was the least of this games problem. I didn't think I could hate a game so deeply despite loving everything about the first one.

Everything you loved about the first game is gone. Ellie has become dull, and Joels death felt like being spat in the face and then laughed at as some poor excuse to create a revenge story that nobody wanted or asked for. Every subtle storytelling part (such as it being up to the player to interpret Joel and Tess' relationship) is gone and instead shoved in your face for the entire ride.

Joels death is supposed to make you want Abby dead, however I couldn't muster up any feelings towards this random new chick, I could only hate the director for making that choice.
There are no interesting contrast between the new characters, only violence, dullness and entire lack of character development not to mention the countless plotholes that all brings the game to nothing but a frustrating experience for all the wrong reasons.

As for the "feminist agenda" that I (as a female for what it's worth) was feeling cautious about, it's sad to see that the only male character that gets to be useful and not a douchebag is the trans one. Hell it doesn't even make sense that there are so many female enemies when the first game empathized on women being somewhat few and far between, which was the whole point with Davids arc with Ellie and Marlenes concern when trying to talk sense into Joel in the end.

The sadistic violence didn't even matter much to me when killing people, but then the dogs showed up. While logically it makes sense, it ruined my personal experience. I didn't like killing them and tried to avoid it, which forced me to skip out on any even moderately aggressive approach in playstyle - or be forced to watch a dog get slashed with a machete or blown to bits by a bomb instead. You're even forced to kill one during a cutscene, then barely an hour later the game puts you in an Abby flashback where you have a loving interaction with that very dog as a lazy and unfair form of guilt trip. The dogs even have names shout out if you kill them, just so you can recognize them in Abbys part.

The game tries too hard to make you feel like a bad person for things you barely have any say in.
It is when you think you're about to be done, that you get put back behind the wheel of Abby for another 10+ hours, where the game tries to prove to you what a good person she is and how much she's been developing while Ellie is out on a blind quest for revenge. They wanted you to initially hate her and soften up through this (which again, I never hated her, I simply just didn't care), but everything about her life and sob-story regarding Joel just makes her a massive hypocrite.
Despite this however, I often found myself thinking that she -is- likeable if she hadn't been part of a **** revenge story.
The thing is, Abby part if it had been a full lenght game wouldn't have been as bad at all, I might even have liked it depending on how such a story would have progressed if Joel and Ellie had never been any part of it.
The game had a few nice gems and admittedly beautiful environment and acting, and I welcomed a slightly improved but overall same type of gameplay mechanics. The story - in this story and character-driven game - is just such a massive slap to the face over and over. The ending was in itself incredibly strange and out of place, so I will only hope that they leave the franchise be or make an entirely new cast of characters and put more effort into what people loved about the first one.

But now let's get to the ugly part, the story. It's not good, really, everything about the story telling of this game feels wrong, it's like they hired some random to make a plot for a budget movie instead of a AAA game. It's disappointing, full of unrealistic drama, plot holes and overall political nonsense that simply had no place in the game. I would be inclined to give the game a solid 6, but just like the first game, TLoU II relies a LOT on the story to work, it's basically a interactive movie with some gameplay elements, so with such a bad thought plot like that, it just doesn't deserve much more. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game develops characters poorly and makes already fleshed out çharacters act in a way that is convenient to the plot instead of their character. Joels interaction with a group of armed strangers sums this up pretty well. In the first game he doesnt trust an injured man in the street, but in the second he immediately trusts about 10 armed strangers with his name and location of their home. Its not believeable. Then you spend the second half playing as the çharacter who killed him in a poor attempt to generate a sense of empathy. They barely disguise the shallow attempts to show the supposed similarities between abby and ellie by having you save a zebra as abby to mirror the giraffe scene with ellie.same with her dad supposedly being a mirror reflection of joel. However, when it comes time to decide what to do with ellie the doctor wants to operate on her without her consent and without informing her of what would happen in the hopes of a making a vaccine. Which even though this is a game, they attempt to root it in reality, so most likely the attempt to develop a vaccine off of the only immune person they have ever found would fail. Its also stupid because they make this decision within 24 hours of tests. But if he were authentic they would be running tests for months, maybe years before resorting to something that drastic. Then abby chimes in saying she would want the operation if it were her. But that type of "determination" is easy to have when its not your life on the line. Anyone can say" well this is what i would do". There is even an attempt to show that ellie is just as "bad" as abby when she kills a pregnant girl by the name of mel. However, ellie did not know she was pregnant until after killing her when she rushes ellie with a knife. During abbys campaign we see that mel refuses to stay home and safe despite being glaringly pregnant, and chooses to be on the front lines, which for me diminishes the impact of her death. I wouldnt be surprised if a marine got shot, thats kinda what they signed up for. Then later on abby has a chance to kill dina, ellies lesbian love interest, who is also pregnant. Once again a poor attempt to mirror the 2. However when ellie pleads for dinas release letting abby know she is pregnant, mayve 2 months so nothing is showing yet, abby says "good" and goes to slice her throat. These 2 pregnant "killings" are in no way comparable. Ellie never took sadistic enjoyment in killing mel, and is horrified when she sees she killed a pregnant woman. Abby is practically smiing about the idea. It then ends with ellie sacrificing her happy life to finish abby off, she loses 2 fingers and then just decides to let abby go. She returns home to find that she has also lost dina and their new child as well. Dina deciding to leave before the "cycle of revenge" kills them all. Some.people have attempted to say that the bracelet on ellies hand was dinas, so it shows that she went back to dina, who now lives in jackson, and this is just her way of saying goodbye to joel and the past. However all of ellies things are still in the house. They are purposely moved into a single room, which to me is dina showing her mentally and physically removing ellie from her life. Then to top it off, because she lost those fingers, she cant play guitar anymore which was the only thing left of joel for her to remember. So no joel, no dina or happy family, and she is a bit handicapped. So no moment for ellie. Just a bunch of "ReVeNgE iS bAd" jargon that is poorly written. The best characters in this game, and one of the only redeeming qualities of it, by a mile are yara and lev. They are the most interesting people in the game and i would have loved for them to expound on the Seraphites, a religious cult in which they escape from due to lev being trans, but we only explore it in cutscenes and murals found in the world. You do get to go to their island towards the end of abbys campaign, but there isn't much exposition. Mainly just abandoned huts and one on a rail sequence through the main village. If this was its own standalone game, with no fully explained and fleshed out characters, then i think this would get a higher score. But we waited 7 years for bad mocap, cheesy and awkward sex scenes that no one needed, some bad dialogue, more glitches than the first game and a story that doesnt make any sense. They season 8 of game of thronesed it. Where characters act in a way thats convenient to the plot. Its a shame. Im sure this will get bashed as being "homophobic" or "transphobic" but if your only response to this is to attack the person who made it, then the review is accurate. Hopefully this stays up. As for me no more naughty dog stuff while neil is in charge. Gonna stick to the uncharted games and TLOU. I wouldnt recommend this game at all. I ignored leaks and wanted to see for myself. I wish i had listened. Would have saved me 60$. Expand

Seriously at some points to where you wonder if its the same person. And ultimately a game that has you murder hundreds of people to avenge a friend decides at the last moment that killing is bad. Which is at odds with the entire game of murder. And that results in a very unfulfilled felling by the end. Expand

The game's only redeeming qualities is its graphics and gameplay, even the gameplay can be debated if its good or not. By the end of the game, you have no characters left to root for (yes, not even Ellie) because the game robs them of any redeeming qualities and interesting character growth.

It's comparable to the last season of Game of Thrones: poor character development and bad plot execution. Ellie lacked the hope and heroism she represented and was loved for in the first game, and that was completely heartbreaking to see. They took the darkest road possible for her and the worst part is, it was completely unnecessary. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Gameplay was the a mixture of Last of Us and Uncharted 4, the level design was the same as always. The soundtrack and sound effects were godlike so it’s like a typical Naughty Dog Game. The Story was easily the worse part of the game, this is possibly THE biggest disappointment in gaming history. And I’ll go through each point and compare it to the First last of Us. the Characters either went two ways, killed for shock value, bland as hell Character Assassinated. Joel was watered down, Joel never trusts anyone he doesn’t know, even normal Joel 20 years before the events of TLOU1 didn’t trust people, 20 years later Joel was willingly gonna run over a “hurt” person and damn near killed Henry twice if not for Sam and Ellie stopping him. Abby was a bland dueterologist, you can’t kill off your most beloved character possibly ever and then expect the player to feel bad for Abby, and let’s talk about character development, EVERY SINGLE TIME a character started having character development, they get written off in the name of Shock value Dina, Ellie, Manny, Jesse, Yara etc. Nora, Owen, Issac, & Mel were all bland as hell in Abby’s story but were good as side characters in Ellie’s, they served a better purpose in as mysterious side characters than bland main characters. Naughty Dog since 2007 has been. Authenticity with characters you can relate with to and believe in to the point you sit there and say “I believe in this, I want to play this I’ll pay to play this, and when it’s over did it deliver” that’s it. Last of Us 2 had neither of these... Also while I’m here. It really annoys me how much they changed Ellie, Ellie being the sadistic maniacal stone cold Killer doesn’t fit her character, she hadn’t gone through enough to have that much of a transformation in FIVE YEARS. Ofc she was always fun loving, emotional and the sharpest tool in the shed BUT* if you cross she only killed to protect HERSELF OR JOEL. Have some sort of consistency. Joel being the sadistic maniacal stone cold killer worked because he wasn’t a hero nor was he the villain he was a Survivor, surviving by any means necessary in a desolated world and it took him a span of TWENTY Years to get that far and had already gone through a lot even prior to losing Sarah. Storytelling and Theme I believe they used a ton of dumb logic and plot twists but some of the plot twists makes sense. For example Abby being a firefly that made sense why she wanted to Kill Joel but Dina being revealed that she’s pregnant and writing her off as Ellie’s partner through the journey made no sense it was clear that they were the best duo (outside of Joel and Ellie) and the entire narrative doesn’t fit the Last of Us. Me personally I’ll always say the Last of Us Part II should’ve never existed because the first one was so conclusive and gave you the feeling of “what happens next is up to your imagination”. Last of Us 2 doesn’t fit that part 1 was essentially about the infection first and the Fireflies/Hunters second Part 2 is essentially warring factions first and don’t forget the infection is sorry of kinda around. But the glaring issue is the lack of character development. No one had any development. Also not necessarily the lack of characters but the lack of meaningful characters that served to A. advance the Plot and served a purpose and not only teach the player a valuable lesson but teach us the player a valuable lesson. Sam and Henry taught us how too strong a bond could be and if you lose that person and the ramifications of losing that person could cause you to fall into that very same fate. Tess’ infection and death put them on there path and started Joel’s path on becoming a believer of the cure. Sarah’s death is what hardened Joel and that and Tess death is ultimately why he ended up saving Ellie in the end. What exactly happened in Last of Us 2 that really had ramifications outside of maybe Joel’s death. The second biggest issue is the fact that no one had any good chemistry or rather, in Ellie’s story they wrote them off too quickly for us to even truly pay attention. Take for example Tess and Joel they had perfect chemistry, jesting & talking with one another the ultimate Authenticity so when Tess died it actually meant something. When Sam and Henry died it meant something. Hell when Dina got wrote off as a supporting party member it meant something. When Jesse got shot it was for shock value and didn’t need to happen at all. The third and biggest problem is how they dumbed down Joel and how they killed him off so quickly and then forced use to play with him via flashbacks. Joel would’ve never gone back to help Abby (an unknown stranger he didn’t know) as shown when in the first game when he tried to run over the man who was pretending to be hurt, tried to kill Henry not once but twice, and told Tommy to keep driving when that family on the side of the road was stuck on the roadside. This game took away most of what made the first one so amazing. There are no real mechanical advancements, the graphics are amazing, but the story is disappointing. I never felt the need to review a game, but with this one I can’t stay silent. This is my first game review ever and I hope to make my points clear.

    Technical aspect:

Here is where this game shines, graphics, sounds and acting are just one of the best in this generation, I loved the simplistic gameplay and shooting mechanics (same as the first game), the control of your character without much thoughts, just awesome.

Storytelling: I will put it simple, if you never played the first game there is a chance you will enjoy this second game. But as a sequel it’s just bad, destroyed the first game core and characters completely. The storyline changes from a post apocalyptic world adventure where the cure (vaccine) was the focus to a cheap soap opera full of non sense “drama” that leave the player with no satisfaction at all, it’s just a pointless journey. It’s just bad written that desperately tries to cause strong emotions to the player with a lot of script conveniences without having empathized with the main new character (antagonist). It’s “trying” to give the player a lesson by destroying everything we love from the first game (or any game) and here’s the problem for my, this is a game, A GAME that must be fun or satisfying in some way and it’s not.

    Controversy / Agenda:

I have no problem whatsoever with LGBT representation and social inclusion, I even have a very loved family member who is part of that community. I’m agree with the representation of minorities in every field and I’m sure most gamers are too, but representation and inclusion it is not the same as propaganda. There is no need for this product to be primarily an advertising poster rather than a game, that essentially forces all these ideals down the player's throat. This kind of thing creates controversy, division and hate where there never was. We gamers want good games, good stories and not politics on our screens, believe me when I tell you that the vast majority of gamers do not care if our characters are straight, gay, trans or bisexual as long as they are good characters and empathy occurs organically, but do not force it and most important, do not destroy already established characters in the name of politics or an agenda. The entertainment industry is full of examples of characters that did not need to be forced and we all love in a natural and organic way regardless of race, religion, sexual preference or gender.

    Conclusion:

As a game it's ok, it's not trash either. In my opinion it is a game that should be played but not at full price, should wait for a sale, discount or borrow it from a friend, unfortunately I already bought it (day 1) so it's too late for me. I started this game spoiler free, but I will never blindly trust a video game studio again just because of its name and track record.
