If anything, this "non-game" should be a wake up call to how far removed mainstream critics are from the players.

Cinematic experience on rail that is not fun might be okay for media contributor that only needs to go through this thing lightly once, but is that what ordinary players that don't have a philosophy degree want?

I'm not disappointed that a beloved character died or that we got to play another character. I'm deeply disappointed about the story and pacing of this game. The story seemed all over the place a lot of plot holes and character's that didn't seem themselves, bored at times because of repetitive game play. All in all it was an okay game. Expand

Really sucks that Joel had to die, but the story couldn't have its impact if he was either in a coma or captured Also, in my opinion, the parts with Abby went on a tad bit longer than I expected. Nevertheless a pretty solid sequel in my opinion

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game doesn't deserve a 0, but neither does it deserve a 10 or the title of a 'masterpiece'. It really puts the legitimacy of media outlets even more into question.

    Here is my breakdown:

    Gameplay 5
Graphics 9 (kudos to the art team!)
    Story 0
    Result: 4

Let me say this first: TLOU didn't need a sequel. It just didn't. The story was concluded - yes, there were questions unanswered, but it was a satisfying end nevertheless.

Now, if you decide to make a sequel despite that, there's going to be pressure to get it right. They didn't get it right.
JOEL AND ELLIE made the first game so special, their relationship - now, we're shifting the focus entirely away from that, to characters we can't possibly care for and are bland to say the least. The relationship between Dina and Ellie is completely and utterly lacking chemistry, while Abbie is just a horribly written character and you are FORCED to play her.

On a side note I want to mention that her physique is not attainable in a post-apocalyptic world with sparse resources. A woman cannot attain this body without steroids or an impeccable (high carbs, high protein) diet with an intensive daily weight lifting and cardio routine (twice a day, usually). It seems like it was important to ND, so I feel like it's equally important to criticise this character design choice which a lot of people don't seem to be happy with; understandingly so.

KILLING JOEL in such a disgraceful manner after just two hours, to fuel a revenge plot line which eventually culminates in an underwhelming finale that should suggest to us that revenge is ultimately pointless...I'm sorry, that's just an uninspired premise. Considering Joel saved her right before, Naughty Dog gets caught up in their own narrative and morale they are trying to convey.
Joel deserved better in many ways, and his trust is not easily earned in the first game; but for some reason he is giving it freely in TLOU2.

IT COULD HAVE WORKED, don't get me wrong, but not the way it was executed.
Maybe if you could've given us more moral choices, a way to save Joel and the end, and so on. Instead they're forcing this storyline on us.

"REVERTING EXPECTATIONS" seems to be the motto, but not in a good way; combined with illogical writing (similar to Game of Thrones Season 8) and a way too depressing, hopeless and overly violent tone - failing to continue their legacy.

NEIL DRUCKMANN'S ego himself is disturbing to me, failing to address criticism towards the game or the way he's handled his employees in an adult manner. He's been misleading the audience with trailers. He even put a card of himself into the game (100% brain, a villain). It's bizarre to say the least. I'm starting to think he wrote this game for himself and did it for the shock value, not the fans of the franchise.

(LASTLY, it's very sad to see negative voices being discredited by media and companies alike. We already saw that with the last Jedi, and now it's happening again with TLOU2. We are putting the money in your pockets. We should be allowed to love and hate a game. And maybe, just maybe, something could actually be learned from criticism.)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've been excited about Part 2 since the first game came out. I was quick to defend the game before it even came out, and I made sure to play the entire game before forming any opinions. And honestly? Disappointed is an understatement. The gameplay, the visuals, the soundtrack, were all amazing. The story on the other hand was needlessly miserable. It was hollow and empty, convoluted and contradictory. What I loved most about the first game was Joel and Ellie, and their love for each other. What I loved was the story about finding hope and love and family in dark times. The second game destroys everything the first game built up. Joel dies immediately, a decision so jarring and horrible that I had a hard time continuing to play afterwards. The only scenes with Joel and Ellie together are flashbacks. I think I may have been able to stomach the rest of the story, if not for several facts. For starters, more than half of the game is played as Joel's killer. The game tries to make you understand, to let you empathize, but I couldn't. We had an entire game to get to know and love Joel and Ellie. We watched Abby murder Joel, and then we're expected to fall in love with her later. It was hard. I couldn't do it. Another thing that I found to be lazy and unfortunate was the handling of character deaths in the story. Every single character who died did so in an abrupt and often times unnecessary way. In the first game, there was always something to foreshadow or warn of an impending death. The Last of Us Part 2 relies soley on shock factor. My third issue is with the way the characters were written. Often times I found it hard to recognize the characters. Tommy especially was contradictory in the most jarring way. In the first half of the game, he seemed like the Tommy we all knew and loved from the first game. But by the end he had a sudden change, contradicting his character from the beginning of the very same game! Fourthly, our biggest conflicts from the first game were given little to no attention in the second game and I found no closure. There are several scenes of Ellie questioning Joel's decision to save her at the hospital, and one scene of her discovering the truth. It was not enough, and it was all handled poorly. The ending of the game is brutal for no reason. There is no satisfaction. There is nothing to comfort you, or to make you feel like your time playing the game was spent well. It is hollow. It is lonely. It is needlessly miserable. My disappointment for the story of this game is heartbreaking. The first game was one that I found I could play over and over again. The second game is one I'm not sure that I can ever play again. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Since the release of the game a few days back, we see tons of people giving it some bad reviews only based on their superficial perception of it. Joel's death, Abby, a vengeance incomplete, and etcetera. But, as I said, is a superficial thing, of people who maybe didn't even play the game at all.

The Last of Us 2 is a history of anger and frustration. Ellie's story about vengeance, is just a background for something a lot bigger: the human soul. When Joel die, initially you think that Ellie is just pissed and sad, and wants to kill every one who killed him, only because they killed him. But, I think that's not it. When you get to the ending, you actually see a cutscene showing exactly what Ellie and Joel talked in their last conversation, and that is why Ellie can't stand about his death.

She was so mad at him because of what he did in the fireflies hospital, that she didn't want to talk with him anymore. But, in that conversation, she says that wants to forgive him for that are ready to try it. In the first chapters of the game, while she patrol Jackson with Dina, she says that will watch a movie with him and stuff, but, it was late for that.

The frustration of treating the people you love the most poorly, and the anger of watching he die in you sight is what drives Ellie to Seattle. There, you, the player, meet Abby, and find out all about her will to do what she did, and of course, you see the regret that she carry over for doing so as she see her friends die one after the other, culminating in the lost of the most loved person for her, and in that point she is ready to kill Ellie, Tommy and Dina and get that over with, but, another wonderful character interrupts.

Abby had lost so much until that point, that she is ready to give up everything in her soul for her vengeance, but Lev's shout saying "Abby!" is just enough for her to realize that if she do that, she will never be able to live with a clear mind again, and that is why she don't kill everyone, and go live her life and follow her dreams with the only person that she loves, that is left in her life.

In that path, we go back to Ellie, and see the opposite. She can't live without getting her revenge, she is supposed to live happy with Dina and JJ, but nightmares and panic attacks with Joel's fate and the way she treated him on his last day simply don't leave her be. So, she follows Tommy's path and give up everything for vengeance, seeing Dina cry and not being able to stay in that dream.

We walk with her in the beaches of Santa Barbara, California, to see a totally different nature in there, and the graphics once more, enchant us all. And in that beautiful place, we learn that terrible things are happening, and Ellie kills a lot of people that she doesn't even know why are there or what they are doing there, just to find Abby, who they've captured. And when she does find her, she sees that Abby is almost lost. Is skinny and weak, and was left there to die, but in the moment that she frees her, Abby runs towards Lev to save him too.

That point she almost give up on the vengeance journey because she know that Lev needs Abby, and if she killed her, he was going to live alone, and most likely die... Another person who doesn't need to die, dying? Ellie can't stand that anymore, she, Abby, even you as a player, are completely tired of that story, and that sight, so she was going to let them go, but another sight of Joel dead, make her even put a knife close to Lev's throat to make Abby fight her.

And after that long, and angry, and tired fight, Ellie don't kill Abby, but get close enough to realize what Abby did realize months before her, that doing so will make her lose everything about his soul, and noticing that she already lost everything for that vengeance: the man who was her father in that chaotic world, a friend who was dear to her, a woman who she loved and a child who she loved, and most importantly: lost herself.

As I said in the beginning of this, The Last of Us Part II story, is about anger and frustration, and that this the feeling we are left when we finish the game and see Ellie walking away from the farm alone and without actually having a porpouse. She lost so much for revenge, that her life doesn't have a meaning anymore, and that was the main reason she was pissed with Joel. In her head, if she died on the Hospital for a cure, her life would have a meaning, and she was going to be free of that cruel world.

Naughty Dog and Neil Druckman in a amazing way, show us that characters in a fictional scenario most tied to reality are not immortal, and are not superhuman. They feel, they panic, they cry, and most importantly, they die, on the outside (Joel) and on the Inside (Ellie). And that is why this game is a 10, or a 100, or a 1000, whatever. That is why the game is almost perfect, because, we can't say that it is perfect, as I said the story of the game itself, show us that is impossible to be perfect.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is a truly fantastic game being given 1/10s by two kinds of people: people who are who attached to what they *wanted* the game to be and people who haven't played the game at all. This is "Part II" and not a sequel in the truest sense - it's a continuation of all of the themes and plot points and ideas that came out of the end of the first game. Yes, Joel dying made perfect sense after what he did. It was always likely and it was absolutely given its due weight.

-Ellie sets off on the warpath, but as you proceed through her section of the game, you find out more about her increasingly complicated relationship and eventual falling out with Joel after she found out what happened in Salt Lake City, adding a complicated layer to her motives for going after Abby. What's she really after? What's going on in her head?

-You spend the first half of the game hating Abby... until you get to her part of the game, learn about her background, and spend three days with her that are written as a parallel to Joel's arc in the first game. 90% of the people who are complaining about her fall into the latter group mentioned at the top - people who haven't played the game at all.

-I'm tempted to give the game a 9/10 because I don't quite think it sticks the landing. The reasons for Ellie apparently forgiving and moving on from Joel (and not killing Abby) are kind of muddled - it's presented as though the flashbacks to her time with Joel make her change her mind, but it's not really clear why she remembers the particular moments she does at the moments she does. Why go all the way to Santa Barbara only *then* to decide to forgive Joel while her hands are around Abby's neck? It almost works, but I don't think it quite does.

You see, I don't care if you're gay, Japanese, Chinese, trans, or whatever... The thing is, this just shouldn't be the point of The Last Of Us. The first game was a apocalyptic world about a man who lost his daughter and found in Ellie his reason for continuing to live how a decent man. Was essentially the touching relationship between a father and a daughter, something basically nonexistent in games in general. A game with this this kind of plot and interaction has nothing do with politic ideals, sexual agenda, a new male-girl that we are forced to play or a cliché cycle of revenge already used in thousands of games and movies. But then Neil Druckmann choose put aside the the greatest strength of this franchise - the relationship between Ellie and Joel - to bring all of those LGBT+ progressists things and a nihilistic plot, just to "subverting expectations". It's simply frustrating. In the end, everything feels forced and overly depressive. Now I just want to erase that second part from my memory and pretend it never exists. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nothing will ever top the last of us for me, it has been my favourite game since it came out, and part 2 although not beating it, holds a place in my favourites. To be frank, I also was one of those who wanted 450 hours of Ellie jokes and another 100 hours of Joel singing sweet nothings through my screen, but this game instead put me down an emotional, nerve-wrecking, anxiety driven journey that I didn’t think it ever could. And I loved it. Don’t get me wrong, I too, also screamed profusely rude slurs toward Abby when that golf club made impact on my favourite characters head, it sent me down a raging path, I’m not saying I purposely let Ellie kill me 29 times before deciding I could not change what was already in the game, and I took my fate and I cried my way through beating Ellie to an ever loving pulp(I’m sorry).

Of course I felt the need to stop playing when I officially had to be Abby. My rude awakening happened when I had to realise that it’s a game, and the creators of the game knew exactly what to do, and I got back to it. I couldn’t believe how much I wanted her group to perish in fire, it was like naughty dog had placed me under a demonic spell of hatred, I loved it. The game was well paced, the story was beautiful in all its bloody glory, I cried, laughed, closed one eye when those wretched little stalkers ran along the floor. But I loved it. Most of it. Personally, I’d have loved a little more with Tommy, considering both Ellie and Tommy wanted the same goal, as we were always a step or two behind him, I’d have liked to see him within a few missions. The premise of the game seemed to allude itself. With the objective to seek revenge after watching Joel get clobbered to death. Why did Ellie allow her to chew her fingers off like some cannibal and then call it quits? She left Dina after Tommy came to call her out, and she sets out once again travelling to finish her, and again, does not do it. In regards to Abby. It took me a while to feel like playing her was a chore which is sad. I just felt sad, to leave it on that cutscene, was she going to kill the rest of my favourite characters? Would Tommy tickle her ankle and Ellie would slap the gun from her hand? All these thoughts, yet there I was standing in a building with Abby, absolutely clueless as to how her adventure to the theatre concluded. But then I could throw balls to a dog, and I spent an unregretable amount of time doing so, and the balance came back. (No honestly, why did she get to have the dogs on her side? Do you know how many of those good boys I killed?) I never really had the connection with Abby but my lord did I understand her character. The realism in this game was out of this world. Humans make choices everyday, and some choices have bigger consequences, and this game it showed. And that’s what I loved. Every character had a motive. An unwillingness to let go of someone you loved. A justice for a death of a father. Justice for a dead brother. Each reason, brought consequence. And everyone paid a price at the end, like humans do. It’s so easy to side with Ellie, we played a full game with her already, we understood Ellie and Joel. We felt like what they did, was all right. And then Abby comes along, wanting justice for the murder of her father, and suddenly we are conflicted. We are stuck within the grey area of view, where right and wrong is skewed. It’s a perfect game, it’s raw, brings the emotional integrity of the player to all new highs. I wish people understood the masterpiece properly, to stop thinking about the political side, of the sides shifting, of anything that doesn’t resemble your way of thinking and just play it, understand it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a terrible story, I can see why people like it for the gameplay though. The Abbey sections are cringy and the part where you have to do a plot twist is just dumb.

The ending is just a disappointment, no payoff, no actual conclusion, very little is said by Ellie or anyone else.

Naughty Dog intentionally made Abby appear good natured because she pets dogs and plays fetch with them, while Ellie is force to appear evil by forcing you the player to kill a dog, even though they said you wouldn't have to in an dev interview.

The gameplay is just alright, its a lot of repetitive gameplay and not worth bothering actually fighting the NPCs, its easier to sneak up and back stab them, which gets boring the 300th time you've done it before.

I was really excited to play this game, I’ve been waiting for it for the longest and it just didn’t live up to the hype. The LOU1 should’ve been left alone. Really didn’t like playing have the game as Abby after what she did. That was really disappointing. Also I understand the explanation of the Ending but it’s just frustrating. Idk why the game creators didn’t after more input from the diehard fans. I’m just so disappointed overall. Besides that the game play is really good and the graphics are great. I enjoyed the fighting scenes. For that I give it a 5 out of 10. I wish I knew how it would play out before hand so I wouldn’t have spend the money to get it. Gameplay improves from the first game by adding more to combat, movement, new enemies and improved AI. Combat is more intense with the fact that there isn't much ammo lying around making you rethink each combat scenario whether it would be against humans, dogs and the infected. I like the new infected like stalkers and shamblers which add to the already intense combat with normal humans. I'm glad this game is longer than the first one. This game is a masterpiece. The attention to detail is great, with the enemies you defeat calling out each others names adding extra realism. The knockback you experience when you get shot makes every shot feel more impactful and keeps you from wildly rushing enemies. The two separate but intersecting storylines made for an interesting storytelling device, but could have been executed better. I found myself rushing through the second storyline because I wanted to know how the cliffhanger I was left with concluded. Would have worked much better if the gameplay alternated evenly between the two characters, as opposed to all at once one at a time. Still a positive, challenging experience overall. Expand

Most people would go at length to explain how much they hate or think this game sucks... but not me. This game only deserves a single sentence one that sums up everyone's thoughts on here, bar the greedy and the few who genuinely enjoyed this. It's a good game, with a good world to explore, a great soundtrack and absurd graphics for a PS4.
A good and well-told story, with well-developed characters and a different point of view, is not a game of hero or villain, they are just survivors. I never felt things like I did playing the last of us part 2, fear, anger, guilt, sadness. One of the best games on ps4.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To Start my review I wanna adress the issue of the hate this game recieved. The game in my opinion has a good story it has a lot of twists and unexpected deaths like Joel’s. The ending is also very criticized because of its ending, in this aspect I do agree, the end doesn’t have a lot of sense because Ellie doesn’t care about anything but getting his revenge no matter the cost but in the ending she forgives Abby who killed Joel and lets her go and that doesn’t make any sense! Apart from the ending I think is a very good story and even made me cry at times. The game play isn’t a walking simulator because in almost every zone there is action and when there is no action the game lets you explore Seattle like in day 1 where you can explore downtown Seattle and rewards you for doing it with supplies or collectibles. The combat is also very good I feel that it’s very realistic because when an enemy sees me far away and I try to kill him with my knife I get shot multiple times until I die or I run away, maybe it’s because I’m very bad at the game and I don’t know how to evade bullets, also when you take a lot of damage while crouching down it can even knock you down, another part of the combat is the stealth and this part makes me very nervous when the enemies are infected, the stealth is easier than the first because you get a silencer that helps you to kill enemies silently faster than the bow except for when you play as Abby because you have a crossbow and it’s like a gun but with arrows.
Apart from all of this the scares actually scare me even though you can count them as cheap sometimes
    That’s all :).
And yes my name is because of this hate :)
Please don’t hate me it’s my first review sorry if it doesn’t make sense :>

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finally finished my first playthrough, and honestly, all of the negative takes on this game are not deserved.

It's not like people didn't see this onslaught coming from the moment a trailer revealed Ellie to yes, be definitely into girls, and yes, it's going to serve as something as part of the story. The reveal of the leaks only helped amplify people to have a "reason" to be mad and want to cancel their preorders, and even be ready to drop negative scores on release date, which they definitely did.

A number of negative reviews that include "woke" and "SJW" doesn't really surprise me, and they're definitely coming from incels who didn't even actually play the game.

The reviews citing "story" issues: I'm convinced most of these are from players who didn't finish the game. You can tell by the fact that the "most helpful" reviews of the game right now are coming from day-one reviews, and there's quite simply no way anyone was beating this game in just a few hours. But the few who did actually play through the game, and still want to cite their contempt for the story, I've gotta say they're pretty low IQ and simple folks. The story is much more dynamic than the original and unconventional. This is something that should be appreciated in gaming, especially in sequels to a successful new IP. But nope, they didn't get the game "they wanted". They didn't get another story of duo-team Joel/Ellie going and kicking some ass and trying to survive, so **** the director and the devs because they were too dull to get it, apparently. This is the problem with entitled fanboys. But let's be honest, no matter what the story entailed, they wouldn't have liked it, because the original game is popular, got loads of awards, and the sequel was highly anticipated. So like so many sequels to equally successful games since: it was never going to live up to their expectations. But the leaks didn't help. It's very aggravating to see tens of thousands of talentless losers try to sabotage the success of years of hard work by the dev team for quite literally no actual good reason.

Unfortunately for these crybabies, the game is actually legitimately good. If you enjoyed the game mechanics of the first game, you'll feel right at home with the sequel. A few new weapons, a few new stealth mechanics, a new means of upgrading abilities and weapons. It's familiar, but fresh.

The graphics got a bump, and it makes the overall feeling of the world around you and the way you traverse, explore, and combat enemies much more breathtaking. It's a very pleasant experience and no doubt the devs put a lot of work into attention to detail.

When there is music playing, it's soothing and meshes well with the moment, which is what it's all about. I'm a fan of minimalism with music in gaming when it makes sense. The Last of Us has always been one of those games where that makes sense. But when it happens, it needs to matter. Thankfully with TLOU2, as was with the first, this is the case.

    The story.

This is arguably the biggest point of contention with players right now. And I say arguably very loosely, because you kind of see the writing on the wall with how a lot of these bad actors just can't separate their assertion that the story is bad, with their need to openly display their contempt for the fact that Ellie's sexuality was made apparent, and even part of the story. Now, of course, no one will have anything to say about the sex scene with Abby, and her romantic history with one of the other supporting characters.

The story is very good, it's thought-provoking, and it challenges your perception of what storytelling can be. The idea that the story is "predictable", as I've seen other player reviews state, is ridiculous. The only way it was predictable is if you went out of your way to watch the story leaks, and even then, there's no way you're going to be able to predict the outcome of anything in this game with such minimal amounts of information leaked by a disgruntled former employee.

I honestly don't understand why gamers set expectations for sequels to games they like. For people who complain about predictability and bad storytelling, it's weird how they want a story to be exactly the way they envision it being - which sounds more predictable than this game ever ended up being.

Players shouldn't be driven off by the bad reviews from people who definitely didn't play the game, and already had their minds made up after they saw the leaked footage. Experience the full extent of the content yourself. This team clearly put a lot of effort into providing something fresh, and if you liked the first game, they deserve to have their hard work be given an honest chance.

Now I'm onto starting my second playthrough so I can complete my plat trophy. 10/10.

Jessie is just their to impregnate Dina and nothing more but to make a family for Ellie and Dina, Joel saves Abby and she kills him with no hesitation,no remorse, tommy is basically useless and just there for no reason.he is saved for convenience to plot to tell Ellie where Abby is, if tommy had no other purpose but to tell Ellie where Abby is he’d be dead. The men are just seen as useless or plain evil in this game and it’s disgusting. Personally it’s amazing, how people don’t catch on that some feminist like Anita sharkeishan are not good for the lgbtq community or hollywood or even any community because it’s deeper than equality it’s just hate towards men and carries the same weight as racism.it makes me cry that tlou2 had to suffer from hate in the real world to get covered by “wokeness, or diversity, or whatever they try to mask this ugliness with” Expand

After beating the game all i can say is save your money. The story is a mess and the plot is a jumbled mess. If this was just a story on abby it would be better, barley though.

My hate is immeasurable, and my week is ruined.
I waited 7 years to play this
And they gave me a horrible intro and trash ending
I just want to forget about this game.
In my mind we never had a sequel

Game play is great, graphics are amazing but the story couldn't be worse, if you like 1st game you definitely won't like second one You get disappointment during a game a lot of times and when you think it will get better it just went worse

No idea how you take everything that was built in the first game and just throw it all away. Two hours into the game and I had nearly given up. Told myself I didn't just pay 60 dollars to play two hours. Picked it back up not really caring about the story anymore, just wanting to get some combat. The pacing of this game is on another level of terrible. Walking simulator, followed byNo idea how you take everything that was built in the first game and just throw it all away. dumbest tiresome game ever. Its one of those movies(not games) that think it's so smart by being unnecessarily bleak and brutal. NO YOU ARE NOT.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
