    I cannot explain the level of disappointment I experienced with this game. Visually this is a stunning game, but what made the first Last of Us amazing was the characters and the story, and in this game the writers/creator completely destroyed the characters and the story. And if you don't find that beautiful to see so deeply in a video game, then you're not going to enjoy this game story, at all.

    SPOILERS:

    In the beginning I was so angry at Abby, I wanted revenge at any cost, and was so upset, sad, heartbroken with Joel's death. That didn't change along the game, but I just sit there and played, paying attention to every detail as possible specifically how gorgeous and detailed the world that Naughty Dog created for this game is. When Jesse died, I got really upset again, seriously I felt so disrespected by this girl Abby that came out of nowhere and the game just cut to the cutscene where you start to get to know who the **** is this girl that killed my beloved Joel. Did it change my mind about her? No. But I got to know why she planned to kill Joel her entire life, since her dad was murdered by him, and he was the doctor who's gonna maybe save humanity getting the cure out of Ellie. Did it change my mind about Joel's decision? Hell no. Considering that, and that the main point of mid game is to show you both sides, when the game goes to Ellie again, after a freaking terrifying fight where I almost lost my heart thinking Ellie or Dina were going to die too, the game sends you to what was supposed to be a "happy ending" for Ellie, Dina and JJ (their baby). But yeah another scene of Joel layed on the floor, the saddest scene of all game cames out to disturb Ellie, and we see that she can't get that out of her mind, of course totally understandable. Then comes a scene that I found myself super happy because Tommy was alive! But when Tommy got mad at Ellie because she doesn't want to risk her family to pursuit that vengeance, I felt really sad. But anyways, she can't be in peace, she goes on another journey to find Abby and revenge Joel's death. In this part I was actually worried about her and how she was going to lose everyone she loves in exchange for nothing. Because that's the point right? Is killing Abby going to bring Joel back to life? No. That's a hollow you can't actually fill. You have to give time to time. In the end, when Ellie almost left without even fighting Abby, Joel's corpse comes again to her, and she decided one more time that she couldn't let Abby go. But when she's almost drowning her to death, another memorie comes. Her last talk with Joel, in the night before the day he left her life forever. What is cool about this scene, is that we clearly see that Ellie got so upset on Joel, that she maybe could not forgive him, but she would like to try. And that's what matters, as long as she forgives him, she will be with only good memories about him. This is SO hard to think about and fully understand, or worse, to do it (included myself of course). But I found that so beautiful to see in a videogame guys. That's how much she loves him, that vengeance was nothing compared with her love for Joel, and it was not going to bring him back, it was just going to bring more disgrace to her life. Of course she actually learned that in the worst way possible. And the fact that she releases Abby in that moment, for me was the time that she began to truly forgive Joel.    … Expand

It's really disgusting to play her part. The important changes happened on this character all seem unreasonable and accidental. I'd give -10 for story. But the game play and graphics are pretty good, so I think 0 is a reasonable score.… Expand

    First off, let me say that almost everything about this game - the visuals from graphics to environment design, animation, voice acting, gameplay (in my opinion, although some people disagree) - everything but the story is absolutely impeccable. The technical presentation is amazing. Pretty much all of my criticism is based entirely on the story, and even if I absolutely hated the story (which I didn't) I would probably have to give the game at least a 5/10 despite it being story-driven.

    I'm not totally sure of how to feel about this game. I think I'd rate it between about 7.5 and 8.5 overall. The story was FINE in general. I did enjoy it, and I certainly didn't hate some parts as much as many people did, but it wasn't perfect - there were some strange decisions made in the writing, and I think the whole experience could've been much better if not for some poor execution at a few key moments. There are some pacing issues, and I think the game was a tad overlong even if I was mostly enjoying it. The story is polarizing, and not for no reason - if you're willing to roll with the story and it lands for you, then there's a chance for you to like it, but if you aren't or it doesn't then the entire intended theme and story structure will likely crumble in your eyes. With that said, with some patience and the willingness to be open minded about characters and the story the game is trying to present, I think it is still fairly enjoyable.

    I would warn players that it would be doing this game a disservice to go in with preconceptions and expectations about what it is going to be about. It comes after the first game, but it is not just a direct continuation of that game's story; at least, it doesn't feel that way. There is exaggeration and tribalism on both sides of the strange war in the gaming community about this game. I'd recommend that interested players don't listen to any of that, from anyone (including me, really), and just experience it for themselves before forming an opinion.

    And for the record:

    I loved the first game, and its characters, and understood it, and still enjoyed this game.

    I disagree that it deserves 10/10, but the bombing of 0/10 reviews (and, truthfully, the counter-bombing of 10s, even if I understand why) is ridiculous.

    You're allowed to like or dislike the game. Whatever you naturally feel about it is OK, and it's OK for people to disagree with you. The rampant tribalism and toxicity about it online is infuriating and sickening. It's especially ironic because it is about this game specifically. People just need to calm down, even if they're disappointed in this thing that they've been waiting for and invested in.    … Expand

    Simply a phenomenal game. Amazing story, which doesn’t become too far fetched and unrealistic, but is never dull. Fantastic ending, great acting, superb gameplay and breathtaking visuals. Almost perfect in every way.

    This game is embarrassing. You know what? I'm gonna play a game with a better story than this. Dead Rising! That is right. Dead Rising basically only has ONE story element. "The government are using Zombies for Money" But even THAT is more engaging than this failure of a game.

    Go play as Frank West in Dead Rising. You will have WAY more fun.

Its not better then the first, but its a solid sequel. It will trigger all sorts of emotions, like the first one. Dont let Joel dying stop you from trying it. There is definitely room for improvement. But a solid 8/10 regardless. Spoiler!!!

    To start, the original Last of Us was one of my favorite games of all time. I replayed the game a couple weeks before Part II came out so it'd be fresh. I highly recommend doing that.

    Let's talk about what this game does well. First, I think the story as a whole was pretty good. Some people would say that the story-telling was poorly done, but I think it was fine. The story is told in a non-linear fashion, but I generally didn't have a problem piecing things together. Wasn't perfect, but I'll get more into that later. Overall, I'd give the story itself an 8/10.

    Another thing the game does well is the gameplay. Besides the larger world with more parts for exploration of supplies and collectibles, the gameplay, especially that of the combat system, was mostly the same as the original game. The game also adds the ability to jump and climb up ropes, which adds more verticality to the game than the original had. I would give the gameplay an 9/10.

    Now let's talk about what the game doesn't do well. First, I felt the pacing was very poorly done. The game is 25 hours long, but it felt way longer than that. After the halfway point, it started to feel like a never-ending slog. Once I got to the main Abby portion, the story had answered most of the main questions I had early on, so I didn't feel like the Abby portion added much to the story. I didn't really care for Abby that much, probably because she killed Joel at the beginning. Seeing Abby do that created such hard feelings against her that even seeing her side of things in nauseating detail wasn't enough to overcome that. As a result, you end up being forced to play as a character you don't like for 12 hours. Had the game had her kill Joel at a point in the game after we had seen her story, we may have empathized with her more. Nonetheless, it felt like parts of the game were way too drawn out, such that in the second half of the game, I felt myself just wanting to get to where I needed to go to finish the game... only to run into yet another group of enemies. It started making the gameplay and combat feel repetitive and stale. I'd give pacing a 2/10.

    The second thing that could've done better is balance. I played the game on moderate difficulty. Played Part 1 on hard. I'd give the first game a 10/10 in balance. Perhaps this was intentional, but this game was much harder to stealth than the first installation. Maybe that was the game's way of forcing the violence onto you. The enemy placement was such that many times, it was nearly impossible to stealth kill one enemy without another seeing you and triggering an all out gun fight. To add to that, I felt that the raw number of enemies per encounter was more, such that many times I felt that there were simply too many enemies. I felt far too often that the game threw these giant hordes of enemies without giving you a reasonable way of avoiding them or stealth killing most of them. Consequently, each enemy encounter was far more exhausting than enemy encounters in the first game. These encounters quickly made me feel burnt out from the combat which was only exacerbated by the poor pacing of the game and the annoyance of running into yet another giant horde of enemies. It quickly felt like many enemy hordes were there only to extend the length of the game and the game's content. The spacing of enemy encounters felt poorly done too - sometimes there would be long stretches without enemies (which I'm not complaining about), or you'd run into a giant horde right after clearing another giant horde. I understand that Naughty Dog was trying to create an over-the-top, violent experience, but it's not fair to ask players to go through that, AND have an overly long experience on top of that. I'd give balance a 3/10.

    Overall, this game had the potential to be a 9/10. Maybe even a 9.5/10. The story I felt was good enough for that to happen. But the pacing and balance issues were too much to overlook in my case, so I'd give this game 6.5/10.    … Expand

At first I didnt understand why Ellie would just allow Abby to live. I thought it was anticlimactic. But once you truly turn your brain on and look at all the subtleties in this games writing and cinematography you come to realize that its actually quite beautiful. Many people think the ending renders the entire game pointless. But I think they fail to realize thats entirely the point.… Expand

I Need get this off my chest for the people simping for Abby and showing remorse for her i just want to let you know, Joel wasnt the perfect person and yes he did what he did but it was for survival he didnt ask for it but he had no choice you cant just blatantly say Joel deserved to die, he fought many foes along the way to look for a cure and when it was finally the chance to find a cure he choose not to because it would have killed Ellie in the procces but you do need to take in consider that he has lost his daughter on his hands and probabily blamed himself for the cause and as soon as he found Ellie it was like he found his daughter back and he didnt wanted loose her again so he choose to sacrifice the cure to save Ellie's life, yes it was quite selfish of him doing that but you cant blame him after all the hard times he his been through, he lived his whole as a survivor not a saint because thats the harsh reality of this apoliptic world that we live in and in order to survive we need to have a strong mindset and show no remorse for the people who want to cause harm to you and the people who you care about, people like me are upset because the way he was killed it stupid, the guy he could tell an ambush from miles away, Went to some random strangers base and said "Hello my name is Joel i may have killed thousands of people who have been one your family member but i really just cant help myself not telling my name to you all lovely people" like thats not his character. Now back to Abby she killed her own teamates (unlike Joel who cares about his allies and family) and probabily done more questionable things than Joel, She needed to acknowledge that revenge was a bad idea in the first place and accept the death of her farther because sooner or later this was bound to happen to anyone living in this world but you killing the person who killed your dad doesnt make you any better than that person, yes its hard to accept losing someone but her dad asked for it by pointing a gun at Joel you cant blame Joel for self protecting it just annoys how people want to protect characters that dont matter in the story anyway. Naughty Dog dont you get that the reason people liked TLOU is the bond between Ellie and Joel not Abby and her Dad no one cares just stop ruining my experience with this masterpiece of a game like you have seen how people reacted to Walking Dead so im asking you WHY DO THIS? What I think they are trying to go for in this game is a lesson on perspective when you play as Abby you get to see her as a human and why she did it now whether u pity her or still hate her is up to you, personally I still hated her. I think the story in this game is a new kind of story that is interesting. Neil took a lot of risks with this game and most of it worked out. For the people who think that there is forced identity politics and forced LGBT ideas, there's not, Ellie has been known that she was lesbian since the DLC from the first game and honestly the fact that there are some LGBT aspects in this game makes it a little more interesting. Now I'm not some big LGBT supporter that thinks stuff like this should be shoved down peoples throats at all i dont think that's right but I think that the LGBT aspects in the game fit and really what does it matter, it makes some good story points too.


    This game is definitely one of the more realistic games, this had me on my feet for almost the entire game because I couldn't predict what would happen i loved the game play it felt fluid and the way you could move your character was awesome.

    Did it match up to the first game? Story wise? No, definitely not the first game is a masterpiece and I think pretty much everyone would agree. But I still think that this game is one of a kind and definitely worth playing.    … Expand

    Game sucks. Totally disrespectful to the legacy of the Ellie/Joel dynamic, and the developers made them way out of character. Graphics look good, but it takes more than good graphics to make a good game. All in all, a very unsatisfying, disappointing, and upsetting sequel to one of the best and most loved games on the ps4. Reminds me of the disappointment and frustration of Mass effect 3.

    Made an account just to try to offset the poor reviews. This game is a work of art. Anybody that has complaints about the story have never told a good story in their lives. Let alone one with this scope and level of polish. It's currently my GotY and a wonderful way to say goodbye to the current console generation. Thanks Naughty Dog and Sony for bring me along for this emotional ride.

    To address some of the complaints you may be hearing:

    Yeah, Joel dies and it sucks, but, that's a crappy world they live in and I'm surprised that he stayed alive for that long.

    Plot holes? The story is a bit complicated, with multiple timelines, but I didn't notice any holes in the plot. I am a bit confused as to why people are confused.

    Like many of the people on here, I too was apprehensive at first playing with Abby. However, by the end of the game I began to understand her and respect the writers' message despite them killing off one of my favorite video game characters. At least he didn't get infected. That would have really sucked.

    I do not think that Naught Dog has some sort of SJW agenda. This game included characters of all types. It's kind of like how the world is right now. What's wrong with that?

    The violence...Well, the game is violent, super violent, and I understand that it could turn some people off, but it didn't bother me at all. I'm also a former paramedic and now an ER nurse so I have seen death and the aftermath of violence for many years. I'm probably desensitized.

    The visuals are absolutely amazing. I am spending a good portion of my second play-through taking screenshots attempting to be some kind of photographer in the game. It turns out that I am just as awful of a photographer in video games as I am in real life.

    I think the gameplay was great, and improved, zero complaints, but I am also used to the gameplay from the first game.

    My only complaints to Naughty Dog: Stop being so stingy with the tape! I need to make more arrows!

    All in all, I give the game a 10/10 and I stand by it. You may not agree, but, one of the cool things about this world is that you don't have to agree. For those that have yet to play it, give it a shot. It's a game. It's a story. It's an experience. And it will definitely leave you thinking.    … Expand

    There is up to 8 hours that I finished the game's history and i'm still wordless about how incredible well made it is. This game is one of the few games that can make you feel such a strong empathy for the antagonist of the game, and even more: It makes you not know how to feel about what is going on the game. In all the Ellie vs. Abby fights the game had I can only remember wanting them to stop fighting.
    Every consequence, every move one of them makes towards the other, every single small piece of history seems to take you to the thinking: "Is vengance really that important?". Especially in the part where Ellie abandons Dina and JJ to finish what she had started.
    So **** amazing!

    This game tells de best history about vengance, forgiveness and consequence I have ever saw. It really brings out the message behind the phrase "Vengance is like Salt Water: The more you drink it, the more thirsty you'll get". And it goes further to make you see how deep the game goes: Even the secondary characters of it have theirs deepness and relevance to the game`s history.
    And not only the history: This game outdones his first part in gameplay, deepness and especially in the exploration and world design factor too.
    This game is simply amazing, and worth every dolar spent on it. Even though many people will desagree and dislike the subverting expectations part of the game and the twists the history takes, this game is a MUST PLAY, for good or for bad. Please don’t bring back Uncharted to have a woman no one cares about kill Nathan and Elaine within 2 hours and then their daughter ultimately doesn’t get any revenge. That would be just swell. I signed up to Metacritic just to give a review on this game cause I’m stunned. The 95 rating the critics give this game compared to the actual everyday players/users show exactly the world we live in today, the critics are to afraid off speaking the truth and don’t want to offend anyone with an actual real genuine thought. Context is everything Naughty Dog said in regards to the spoilers and killing Joel, one of the best characters on any gaming platform was killed within 2 hours. When we spent one of the best games of all time (first game) building this bond and care for both of them, this was one of the biggest slaps to the face to gamers I’ve ever seen. We all knew Joel was probably going to die to set Ellie on her revenge path and I was going to be ok with this, but how they did it, my jaw dropped in horror. Joel firstly saves Abbey from certain death then gives up his name easily and has no last words to Ellie, just beaten to death with a golf club. Now with some time to grieve and set on my path of revenge I may be able to get past this and if it was great and tense gameplay and a good story to follow I could maybe give this an 8 or 9 but BUT BUTTTTT HERES WHERE ITS UNFORGIVABLE, TO MAKE ME PLAY 50% of the game as the person who brutally murdered Joel, Eugene and then Tommy was one of the WORSE GAMING DECISION MADE IN HISTORY!. But holy ****, the last few hours I was just begging through the screen for Ellie to give up her quest for revenge and go home with Dina. When the scene at the farm with Ellie and Dina and JJ happened I started crying, I thought that was gonna be it. Fade to black sitting on a tractor with her kid, the cycle of violence broken, and a happy ending. I feel absolutely gutted that she came back to find Dina had left. I’m hoping we’ll eventually find out that they get back together and raise their kid together. I want a happy ending, I want people to like me to have happy endings.

    Not to mention, Joel reminds me a lot of my dad. The way he awkwardly tried to connect with Ellie and especially the way he asked Ellie if Dina was her girlfriend. I played the prologue on Friday and gave my dad an early Father’s Day call...

    I really really liked this game I think it’s better than part 1. But I do feel as though my feelings were held hostage, queer women never get happy endings it seems. I feel like this game affects us differently as some of us probably desperately want to see some happy endings (which are in short supply for queer women.) Everyone’s able to sympathize, but I’ve never felt this kind of empathy for a video game character before. On another similar note, having their only trans character receive pain because of who he is intrinsically and not his choices, like every other character in this game kind of took me out of the experience. It didn't feel authentic or grounded in the narrative they built which revolves around the consequences of your actions. I'm not saying it was the worst choice they could have made but he didn't need to get dead named so often or have all of his trauma result from his being trans, there were dozens of smarter ways to write him into the story as elegantly as they wrote in Ellie being gay.

    probably an 8/10 realistically due to (pretty sizable) pacing issues and their treatment of the one trans character but I'm rating this based on how it's affected my life and me emotionally because I believe that is a worthwhile perspective. 10/10 game for ME, wow.    … Expand

So much misfortune and sadness has been put in front of us these past months and one of the most anticipated games of the last 3 years, that game that will make us escape real life and truly immerse us in the story, delivered exactly what the players didn't want.
    Trailers contained deceptive marketing to try and show that the game was going to be engaging, inspiring and emotional like the good old days on the first game. On the contrary you are left with a character you don't want to play as, depressed, and hating the game's plot. The only enjoyable moments were the flashbacks with Ellie and Joel and when you killed those bastards. My sympathies to the gaming developers of the game that worked their hearts out to make something visually beautiful, with amazing mechanics and fluid game-play, just to be ruined it with such a horrible story.

    Ready to play new game plus so I can kill those guys all over again, but probably won't do it because that means I'll have to play as that person.    … Expand

    Joel’s death is so meaningless and casual. Abby’s storyline is not compelling at all. The story takes vengeance as theme, yet we are forced to spare Abby’s life at the end though we have killed almost everyone in the game, which is super disgusting.

    Just the story itself deserves 0/10. That one score is the credit to superb graphics and scene setting.

    Stressful to play through the game but I've just finished it. I don't understand why would anyone play a game that makes you mad the majority of the time. I mean we are trying to have fun to play video games right? This is not the right representation because unlike movies, you need to control certain characters and force you to play certain plotted acts...it's painful and it's not fun!     In the first 1h joel die !! in the next 10st there are more than 10 main characters dead!! WTF why ?
    And in the end the game is so baadd the story break you brain immediately .
    But after 15h i cant play this game anymore because the story is only kill him kill her kill everyone!!
    I hope last of us 3 is not the revenge from ellie or abby!!Or pls make a reboot from part 2 with joel a better story like vs scars or issacs or some new fraction!!Or like joel dont kill the doctor or someone other kill the doc and abby and ellie are in the same team!!    … Expand

Love it or hate it, it did something incredibly brave, and I think that Naughty Dog made something truly special. No spoilers, but with all the people giving it hate I just want to share some love for it.

    Ok, so I’ll be honest... I think this is the best game I’ve ever played. A true masterpiece. It made me feel sadness, grief, anger, joy, and made me laugh and cry more times than I can count. It made me love and hate characters, and even the characters I hate I can still empathize with and understand. This game isn’t for everyone, I get that, but art shouldn’t be for everyone, it shouldn’t only make the safe choice, but challenge you to look at things differently, and this does that. I’ll admit, there were times I got angry at that fact, but I’m glad they did what they did, because it forced me to actually take a long hard look at many different things. Because at the end of the day, this is a story about hate, and what it can do to you, it shouldn’t be easy. There were many times I had to put my controller down and pace around my house, make a cup of tea and try to calm down, because goddamn did this game break me, which I’m honestly grateful for. There’s something so cathartic about allowing yourself to be broken, letting yourself feel all the raw emotions and this game did that to me. So thank you Naughty Dog, you made a truly beautiful game that will stick with my for the rest of my life.    … Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Crap writing, crap characters. To make us play as a character who killed Joel is just TRASH! This was awful. I don’t understand the logic behind any of this game it is terrible! The fighting style somehow got worse. Joel and Ellie’s personality completely shifted which okay maybe Ellie make sense because she’s older but to make Joel who was a BOSS in the last game shift him and make weak and have him make terrible choices in this game. ????? And don’t get me started on Ellie’s girlfriend who had 0% of personality except to flip flop on if she was gay or not and keep Ellie hanging on like a lost puppy. Awful awful writing. Awful character development, AWFUL advertising to make us think Joel was alive JUST TO KILL HIM straight away and then make us continue to play as the person who BRUTALLY murders him. Disgusting. I wish PlayStation would allow me to get my money back!!!!!!… Expand

    Music was nice and I had no complaints over this Level design is beautiful at times, bland and uninspiring at others.     Graphics are mostly top notch, just like the first. No complaints here. Just, beautiful.

    Story is absolute crap. And for a story based narrative game this is a huge turn off. Many characters are boring or outright cringe. Many, like Abby, are out right abominations. Playing the the story in the order it even is in makes little sence. Maybe having character backstory before deaths could've helped here. Absolute trash fire story plot and narrative direction As a HUGE fan of the first this game was a personal attack towards me. 4/10 only because the other points. Story is a 0/10.    … Expand

Acabo de jugarlo y sinceramente me pareció genial, la ambientación, la jugabilidad, las nuevas mecánicas, es increíble lo bien logrado que está el juego, la gente tiene problemas con la historia, la mayoría opina sin haberlo jugado o haber visto el final en un vídeo de youtube, a lo largo del juego se demuestra con ciertas simbolizaciones como Ellie sufre de estrés postraumatico despues de presenciar la muerte de Joel, y ella pensaba que la única manera de conseguir paz es a través de la venganza, lo cual al final se da cuenta de que esa no es la salida, la vision de Joel al final representa esa ultima pizca de humanidad que le quedaba a Ellie, por eso decide dejarla viva y perdornarla, porque matando a Abby no obtendría la paz que buscaba, lo mismo se percibe cuando controlamos a Abby, los pesadillas en el hospital siguen a pesar de que ella ya habia matado a Joel, sino hasta cuando decide salvar la vida de los hermanos Serafitas que ella logra calmar sus sueños, por eso el ultimo sueño que tiene del hospital es con su papá vivo, el juego hay que jugarlo con perspectiva neutra, ni Ellie ni Abby son los buenos, sino que todos son los malos, como jugador es obvio que estaremos a favor de Ellie por ser la protagonista del primer juego junto a Joel, pero viendo desde la perspectiva de Abby, Ellie es la malvada porque mató a casi toda su gente y todos sus amigos, y lo mismo desde la perspectiva de Ellie, el juego requiere cierta madurez para jugarlo y no es un videojuego dirigido para todos, para los que buscan la típica historia del bien venciendo al mal y todos felices, es por eso que me gusta tanto el juego, porque se arriesgaron al elaborarla y les quedó una obra maestra, Ellie se obsesionó tanto con su venganza que se quedó sin nada, lo perdió todo, la ultima conversacion con Joel y la ultima escena dejando la guitarra que le regaló significa que ella ya está lista para dejar atrás todo lo que vivió en esa etapa, ya está lista para madurar y seguir adelante, en cuanto a contenido no tengo quejas, los lugares bien diseñados y ambientados, la pelea con el jefe del hospital es brutal y el mini rework a los infectados especialmente a los gordinflones son de lo mejor, en resumen, lo recomiendo si buscas una historia profunda, madura, y realista, escapa de los clichés como había mencionado antes, si esperabas una historia del bien venciendo a mal, todos felices y a casa, no lo recomiendo.

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
