I really find the game fun and creative. The story does a lot of things wrong but the pros outweigh the cons in my opinion. I like the wolf’s story as well but Abby is a pretty weak antagonist but is not the worst villain I’ve ever seen but I think this game deserves a closer look because the gameplay is really good.

Probably the most disappointing game of the current gen such lazy writing from the developers so Abby kills Joel you go through the game killing everyone in your way doing some very questionable things not to mention you play 50% of the game as Abby it builds up to the last fight between Ellie & Abby Ellie is about to kill Abby sees a vision of Joel thinks screw it then lets Abby go thats it no pay off you thought Mass Effect 3 ending was bad this is worse sorry ND you screwed up on this one Expand

It pains me because the game is getting so much backlash for the sole reason of Abby's flashbacks being poorly timed, THATS THE ONLY REASON IT HAS HATE. I loved the story, and especially the end fight in the water, I think that the meaning and messages are being overlooked, and that's why people dont like it. It obviously can't be better than the first game, sequels never are, but the 8/10 would've been a 9.6/10 but the placement of Abby's flashbacks just wasn't timed well. Thanks Neil for this masterpiece. I really do think this, it isn't some petty scam, it's my honest opinion. That's all I had, but a solid 8 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So after years of waiting, I've finally completed TLOU2. I dont see why there is so much hate? The graphics are unreal. The story has a completely different feel (I personally feel that as Joel has died people are losing there **** and it was a great example of a strong character. The game itself was great and I can honestly say that you need to play the game itself, and form your own opinion. Some reviews I believe are harsh (again it's my opinion). I feel like abby was a great addition and was a character that wasnt liked to start with, when you learn about her you suddenly develop an understanding for what shes done and why she killed Joel. People need to play the full game (some are not finishing this and turning it off after Joel) and realise that its darker than before, not every story has a spectacular happy ending. This game not only had me hooked, it had my crying, stressed, angry and all other kinds of emotions. I really hope that people who play the game, complete it and then have an honest opinion. Hopefully will be game of the year in my opinion. Expand

Within the first 2 and a half hours of this game I hated it. I did not like what I saw and where the story was going. I felt like the game was trying to force something on me and I was not happy. I felt like the game was trying to force something on me and I was not happy. As I continued playing the gameplay kept me interested. The story started to build and I became captivated. And then right in the middle of the game it all changed. I was forced, again, to do something I did not want just so I can care about them. At this point I know what the story wanted me to feel; “take a step in someone else shoes”. To me, that did not matter. The sound work in this game was incredible and with the talented artist at Naughty Dog you can feel like you are there in the once populated, now abandoned, stores and houses in Seattle. You really feel like it’s storming outside your own home while playing. Even though I did not like playing the “second half” of the game I could not ignore the beautiful and creepy atmosphere round every corner. As I continued on playing, the game finally comes full circle to an event of crossing paths (I’m really trying not to spoil anything here). Let’s just say, this was even harder for me to play, so much so, that I kept allowing myself to die for satisfaction. If the game would have ended there I would have been even more pissed. My anger for revenge while playing the game grew more. Going through this story was rich with a lot of highs and lows, but differently more lows, however, nothing prepared me for what happened next. Naughty Dog as proved to me that they are The best at telling stories. I came into the game with a story of my own and wanted justice. I wanted to tell Naughty Dog how to tell this story. It wasn’t until the end of this game it ALL MADE SENSE. The moments in this game that I hated became understandable. I felt so sorry at the end. I use to beg for one thing to happened but when faced with it I put the controller down. I felt guilty and by the end I just saying “please don’t do this”. This story set heavy on me at the end. Feeling all kinds of emotion. I’ve never felt that way playing a game before. This is not a game you can just watch someone play to understand it. YOU HAVE TO EXPERIENCE IT YOURSELF. This game will make you think about senseless deaths in video games and say, “who was that person? What’s their story”. To many people, you may not ever want to ask that question in a game. And 99.99% of games will never ask you too and that’s great. That’s what makes this game special because it does. And is revenge truly worth it. I’m in awe of this game and know that this game will age like fine wine. I was there to buy The Last of Us part One when it first came out. It had somewhat of a small following that grew over time. I have no doubt that the some of the people who hated the plot of this game will eventually try it; whether that be 3 years from now or 7 years. It’s always the consumer choice to buy what they want to play and I’m so glad I gave this game a chance even though the leaks of this game made me not want to. This game is a 10/10. Expand

This game could have been a much more enjoyable experience if they had changed the pacing of it all. everything was out of order and you never got time to develop any sympathy or feelings for any newly introduced characters. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed the game. I enjoyed the story. I learned to like Abby. It's not the popular opinion, but this was an enjoyable game for me all-around. The story kept me invested despite the twists, and I found the internal struggles of the protagonists to be really interesting. I found charm and humor, and a solid 30 hours of entertainment. I don't like that Sony tried to silence people discussing the leaks. I don't like that they tried to strongarm content creators. I don't like that forced reviews of only 40% of the story were the status quo.

But I enjoy the game. It made me feel. It made me think. I understood what the characters were going through. I felt for Abby. I understood why she hated Joel. I understood that while playing with Joel made him my hero, I. Abby's world he represented evil and hate. Is this a generic message? Yes. It doesn't change it is an idea that has been prevalent in discussing our humanity, and has been since the beginning of time. Ellie's decision at the end made her strong. Joel made her strong. Abby wasn't just a heartless killer, she showed more compassion to Ellie than Abby ever showed her. Maybe it upsets people that Ellie would be presented in such a sadistic way, but the fact remains that Abby showed her a restrain and compassion that Ellie didn't show Abby until the very end. The end represented Ellie holding on to a little of the humanity that Joel sacrificed himself to save.

These are my genuine thoughts. Find me on YT.

The decision to not only try and convince the player to empathize with uninspiring new characters, but also dedicate half of the game to them comes off less as an exercise in the morality of revenge and more of a forced and emotionless disincentive to the overall game.

As if the second half of the game spent with the new characters wasn't annoying enough, the illogical ending cements this game as the greatest creative failure in recent memory.

I find it disgusting how the "pro critics" are trying to diminish the opinion of real fans. 20000 fans giving a score of 3.3 is a LOT OF PEOPLE saying Naughty Dog failed horribly with this game. I preordered this game and thankfully I saw gameplay from youtubers who got an early copy of the game the day before the release. I saw the 1st two hours of gameplay, I also saw several hours of play for the mid part of the game and I saw the last hour of it so I know how it all ends. Let me tell you I was, I am devastated by how bad the story is. I was and I'm so upset. I canceled my preorder. I am a big fan of naughty dog well I guess I was, I'm incredibly sad to see how Naughty Dog destroyed this franchise and 2 of the most beloved characters in gaming for literally nothing. How in the world could they think fans of Joel and Ellie would want to play this story. As someone said I don't have to play the full game or even play it to give a review, the same way that I don't need to eat a sandwich that other people have described in detail and told me it is disgusting to know that the sandwich is bad and I will never eat it. That's exactly what this game downfall is enough people have played and described it and seen it and told us how bad it is that all you need to do is to just go and see the gameplay in youtube to confirm how bad the story and character choices are. The story is plain bad and a game like this in which the story and characters is what makes people want to play the game the story is everything. Fans are so upset the game has a 3.4 out of 10 score in metacritic based on more than 20,000 reviewers and I guarantee you that is not a fake score cause it is real players and fans of this franchise who want no part of this game. Naughty Dog ruined its most precious franchise, my favorite videogame characters, somehow it seems to me they forgot how much love we TLOU fans have for Joel and Ellie because how in hell you will believe that we will care or have any empathy for anyone who is not Joel and Ellie. They blew it in an EPIC fashion and they need to acknowledge that they failed the fans and their characters. Trying to call a 3.3 score in metacritic from more than 20,000 people is not going to unmake the nightmarish reality that you made a huge mistake and need to own need and do much better next time. These are your fans who spent 5 years waiting for your product and we are pissed and hurt. I give this game a 0 because I don't want to ever play it to me it doesn't exist because it doesn't hold true to what I and many others believe Joel and Ellie characters and story is. Ellie and Joel story will always for me will always be just the one in the 1st game. Expand

Why have I spent money on this. I was carrying a furious emotion started the second half of the game and rushed to see the rest of the story and proves the I am correct. However, after finishing the second half of the game, I have a completely different opinion, many things start to make sense to me.
TLOU 1 is mostly player centric game, where characters "knows" what they are dealing with are good or bad guys. Many people carries the expectation into the sequel. But the second game's behavior neglegates their expectation.
TLOU2 explores the change of people. When peaceful life kicks in, when people are getting older, what will change them. It is really hard to accept this change, or shift.
I have to admit TLOU2's story needs improvement. Some of the characters' story needs a big more digging. In general, I don't think there are plot holes in it. Especially after I finished the entire game and saw the cut scene, I reallise: OK, this game is not trying to teach me anything. It is just a story telling game. Whether people's choices are right or wrong all depends on your judgement. However, you, as the player can not control it, because it is other people's story.
Maybe I am getting older, I can understand their choices and have the sympathy on Ellie and Abby. I will give this game a 9.

    The break down:

Naughty Dog is a company that takes risks with their games, and this is no exception. The story is an emotional rollercoaster but is well written and very good. The gameplay, graphics, attention to detail, everything about this game is amazing.

The first game was truly the best gaming experience I had, the beginning of this game with that 'scene' had me moved like nothing ever before but it turns out it was done for shock value and their goal to empathize with the other character completely failed. What was the point of this I ask? Was the point for us to empathize with the other character because that clearly failed. Was the point for us to hate her? Well you clearly succeeded but I highly doubt that was the goal. Is it about love and forgiveness and losing everything you have? How does that work out when you brutalize your two main characters with no closure? Leave your audience feeling empty and devastated. If you play this game the last 'boss' fight had me punching square well into cutscene due to how much I despised the other character and not realizing that a cutscene was playing out and I had no control anymore. What is the point in us writing all of this if it's falling on deaf ears. Is Neil really this tone deaf? Maybe we should learn to unlove things that change in our life before they change us. Maybe we should learn to let go as Ellie had to learn to let go, maybe what we hold so dearly to us can ultimately ruin us and maybe just maybe that's the message they're going for? No it's not, they want us to learn to forgive but the path of destruction on your way to said forgiveness devalues that, not to mention it is not possible to forgive a character that you are forced to play with and beat down both of your favorite characters with. This truly was the last of us...fans leaving Naughty Dog. I guess the dreamers of the day are dangerous men after all Mr. Druckkman Expand

First off I loved the first game so most of the complaints I get as far as the story goes. So if you’re looking to recapture the feelings of the first game you will be disappointed. I completely understand the anger for this game. But giving this game a 0 is doing your fellow gamers an injustice. So is saying it’s a 10 to counter all the zeros. I played this game to the end and took a day or so to digest this so I can give this game an honest review. Ok so the story does little to no justice to the characters of the first game. The very beginning is a nice tie in to the first game I thought it gave a nice follow up to the end of the other game ( before the major event that has everyone upset). The flashback scenes scattered throughout the game at points I felt also worked well with the first game’s story. The rest however was hard to wrap my head around. I chose to look at the bulk of the game as a dream sequence or an alternate universe lol. (It worked for me that way) Playing that way or not having an attachment to the first game and it’s characters It’s actually a good game. The story on its own I thought was well done overall and wouldn’t get the hate I feel if this wasn’t part 2 of a beloved game. Won’t spoil anything but the second half is a complete shift. So if you look at it as they are intending it’s quite interesting and makes you think. Which is something I can honestly appreciate. Graphics are amazing everyone seems to agree there. You can see the amount of work that was put into this game for sure. Found myself admiring the littlest things. Gameplay is good very familiar if you played the first game (with improvements). Definitely a violent game but I don’t feel it’s brutal just to be brutal. It works with the concept of the story they are trying to tell. Gotta say overall I did enjoy this game just for different reasons and not to the extent of the first game. I can recommend playing it IF you can look at it the way I did or don’t have a major attachment to the characters. It’s just really hard for a lot of fans of the original to get past that one scene early on and understandably so. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have never written a game review before, and probably never will again, but I feel compelled to do so for this game. The Last of Us was one of my favorite games of all time. I think for a lot of fans of this, many of whom are writing negative reviews for its sequel, the original was transformational in terms of what it did for the medium. It created an emotional impact greater than certainly I thought possible by using the unique features of the modern video game (creating a sense of investment in a relationship between two characters over a 20 hour-ish play time). I hoped (and during the first half of the game or so thought) the Last of Us Two would continue the pathbreaking tread. Instead, the sequel was by far the most disappointing game, really most disappointing media experience, of my life. My dispute with this game is essentially entirely with the story, as the graphics and game play are top notch. Or as top notch as anyone would expect from a game that was always going to be mostly about the story, as the original was.
The story begins with a compelling enough revenge motivation, with a beloved character being savagely murdered after being uncharacteristically chartable and trusting. Now, I know some people have a problem with the ham fisted nature of the death scene, both for its brutality and the uncharacteristic wa Joel walks into an ambush and gives away his true identity. But that could have been fine, as it adds to the seeming senseless of his death and casts him in an even more positive light than it might otherwise, as he is savagely murdered mere moments after saving his killers life. From this point, until the midway point or so, we have a relatively standard revenge story as Ellie and co go west for payback. This is paired with a very promising, but ultimately underdeveloped relationship between Ellie and her girlfriend, as well as Jesse (the father of the child Ellie’s partner is carrying). This had so much promise, but the games rush to focus on its true narrative hook prevents this point from being developed.
The second half of the game, which begins with Ellie and co getting ready to flee Seattle after recusing Tommy and learning that her partner is pregnant, is where the game becomes essentially torture via videogame. After Jesse, one of the view new and relatively interesting character’s is murdered by Abby, and Abby is threatening to do the same we are treated to a flash back. Of Abby’s youth. Remember, this is the same Abby who bludgeoned Joel to death, while Ellie—his surrogate daughter—begs for his life. It would have been hard, perhaps impossible, to make Abby sympathetic to fans of the first game no matter how hard they tried. And they try very hard, but it a completely bizarre and ineffective way. The put their best foot forward by showing that Abby is the daughter of the doctor Joel kills at the end of the Last of Us. This is a fine start I guess, but I think the author’s just didn’t understand the emotional attachment they were pushing up against. The whole effect of the compelling story of the Last of Us 1 was to make us care about Joel and Ellie, we emotionally identify with them as the player. So trying to redeem his killer, for fully 10 hours, is just never going to work unless it is done exceptionally well. And its not. There is a short scene establishing Abby’s relationship with her dad, followed by some rather boring sections with her as a WLF soldier, and her romantic relationship with one of Joel’s fellow killers. This relationship, told in about two scenes, does very little to humanize Abby or make us care. Realizing, as they must have, that merely having her dad get killed and showing that she had a boyfriend she sorta cared about once wasn’t going to be enough to even the scales for killing Joel, the writers through in a redemption arch. Which is a fine idea, if it wasn’t implemented in the most absurd fashion possible. After Abby goes AWOL to see her ex boyfriend, she encounters two scars, members of the enemy faction who we are led to believe she has been slaughter for her entire time in Seattle, save her from another group of Scars. So, as you do, you decide to betray the cause you have fought for years to save these two outcasts, at some point literally mowing down her former comrades as they lay siege to the Scar base. And, because they needed to make the Scar outcast story compelling, but obviously didn’t have the time (or the desire) to tell the same kind of detailed two sided narrative, the scars are outcast because one of them is trans and the scars kill trans people. Excellent. Rather than a compelling attempt at being inclusive, this just feels like exactly the kind of lazy good v. evil narrative that the whole dual Abby/Ellie story is supposed to put the lie to. Abby just comes off as evil, her redemption is absurd.

In regards to the story, if you were to rate this game by itself and completely exclude the first game, it probably gets a 7/10. But with any sequel in any medium, we hinge our expectations off the standards set by the first game. It had a lot to live up to, and ultimately it fell short.

The best approach here may have been to do TLOU2 with brand new main characters that overlapped with Joel and Ellie. What has happened here I considered a travesty with how our main characters were handled. It really hurts to play.

I can safely say I am done with TLOU2, and will be a little more weary of the next story-driven Naughty Dog game, especically with Druckmann attached.

This game is really good. Seriously. Do yourself a favor and play it. Ignore the haters. It's not perfect, but boy it's good and fun.

Malisimo un juego con mala trama, aunque los gráficos ayudan, pero no vale para nada la pena. Ni regalado

God awful story with super cringeworthy political undertones. A complete spit in the face to fans of the first game. Save your money, don’t buy.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
