One of the, if not THE best game I've ever played. I didn't expect much after the first one...I thought "no way they could do better...none". I was wrong.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My problem with TLoU Part 2 is story (I know... weird), but most of characters. This game just feels like a new season for call of duty warzone, even Ellie can be compared to a protagonist of call of duty, she does nothing else then shootin tootin. Story is a total mess because of this all flashbacks, the world presented in TLoU 2 doesn't fit to the world from TLoU 1. Graphics and audio are good. but what bothers me the most is that the music from the first part just works very well in some scenes, but in the second part, there is no music in such scenes, there is only this sound similar to a grenade explosion next to you. I just don't want to play this game, not because the director said so, but because this game is like a circus compared to the first part. And the scene of the death of one of the characters at the beginning of the game (Joel) can be compared to the death of this character if a brick fell on his head at the construction site. Expand

The story is just **** up. Killing Joel like this.. he’s the main character of the first part lol and never supposed to die. Even if so, NOT LIKE THIS and not in the beginning of the story. Neil made all the characters SO STUPID omg. Waste of money

Gameplay is not anything new or groundbreaking despite the focus on details. The story is very generic and not necessarily compelling to have you connect with the cast of characters like in Last of us part 1. The lack of choices for your actions is something lacking in modern gaming where you can combine a great story along with having your choices feel impactful.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game takes the two main characters from the first game and absolutely destroys them. The game turns Joel into a villain and Ellie into a really unlikable character. It feels like the only character they tried to make interesting and likable is Abby and I absolutely hated her with all of my being. The game really shoves this character down your throat after she brutally murders Joel. They also dumb the characters down for the sake of the story which doesn’t make much sense. And these are just the problems with the story I haven’t even spoken about the pacing. I could go on for days about how much I truly dislike this game. The only silver lining is the fun gameplay which is largely unchanged from the first game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel absolutely screwed by naughty dog. Let me start by saying the gameplay, graphics, general feel of the game is amazing. Where this game goes downhill for me is the writing. Let me be clear, if have developed a strong connection to joel and ellie, dont risk playing this game. Early on in the game joel is killed by abby. And after that, all we want is to kill these evil chick and her friends. It seems to be going that way until about 20 hours in. All the sudden you pick up with playing as abby again. Not knowing that your time with ellie is basically over. They try to get you to see things from abbys point of view, which is where they screwed up big time. The real fans of this game are here to play as ellie. Not abby, the **** who killed and tortured joel. There could always be another side to a character. Why would they even think about ruining our connection with ellie by trying to show things from your nemesis POV. At one point you actually beat the hell out of ellie. I felt compelled to let ellie kill me as abby about 10 times before I actually finished beating her(ellie!!) Like would you ever see that done in uncharted? I think not. So anyway you eventually get a bit more time with ellie, only to have a very underwhelming ending. Its a video game, how did naughty dog think this story path was the most intriguing is beyond me. We've seen by the first 'last of us' that they can make a very emotional game with a positivish ending. I'm not saying a game where ellie and all her friends live and get that much wanted revenge, but maybe one where we play as ellie for the game and not half as ellie and half as the girl we want to kill. Just feels like a GIANT slap in the face. And the people that say the game is in a post apocalyptic world. Not everything is gonna work out. Well those ppl obviously aren't attached to the characters. There is a reason these reviews are so low. I was literally hating on these people giving low scores....until I finished the game..... Story can be considered a little contraversial, but it has an impact and emotional debt at every step. And it is evident that developers cared about the characters from the original game because there are excellent set pieces, very emotional dedicated to them. I don't ever post game reviews, but after the cathartic experience of finishing this game, and finding out it was review bombed (of course it was), I had to post my thoughts.

This is a story about forgiveness, how hard and downright impossible it can sometimes be, and what that does to the human soul. Structurally, it wasn't working for me fully at first, but by the end it won me over and almost had me in tears. If you're expecting a linear experience like the first game, this is going to be jarring at first.

But of course, that is not the criticism this game is receiving.

Here is a tentpole sequel that had the gumption to feature - with no fanfare - a cast of ethnically diverse women, a lesbian couple, a trans child, and a synagogue.

I think the notion that any of this is "forced" or "distracts from the narrative" is a good litmus test for who is still mired in the patriarchy and who is not.

In the first game - with a story genuinely on par with Children of Men - you play as and grow to empathize with a man named Joel. He then makes irredeemable choices in the name of love and loyalty for his surrogate daughter, Ellie. This dissonance is supposed to make the player uncomfortable. That's what makes the story memorable. Joel murders innocent people, robs Ellie of her agency, and gaslights her.

What I didn't realize is that many fans of the game completely aligned with Joel's choices. There is no moral ambiguity, no internal conflict with their inherent complicity as the player - they believe all his decisions are righteous.

I only learned people felt this way once The Last Of Us II met "Last Jedi" level outrage that - god forbid - there are consequences for those actions. "Controversy," uninitiated bystanders would call it.

The comparison to The Last Jedi is at once fair and flawed. The Last Jedi seemed to consciously highlight women and diversity and was met with much hatred and bigotry. However, unlike The Last Of Us II, The Last Jedi failed (or chose not to) honor the story that came before. It insisted that sort-of-wrong characters like Laura Dern's were squarely in the right, and assassinated the previously likable characters of Poe and Finn, who promised to be very different people in The Force Awakens.

In The Last Of Us II, the characters make decisions that make sense for them, and the game passes no judgment on whether those decisions are right or wrong.

Most importantly, the theme of the game seems to be empathy. The game forces you to play as characters on both sides of a conflict, which is a truly uncomfortable experience. The discomfort is the point.

This seems to be lost on a minority of very loud people. They thought that an influential piece of art condoned their toxic masculinity when it was actually trying to caution against it. The second game lays that bare, in what must seem like an absolute betrayal to them. But the writing didn't change - they just wildly misinterpreted the material.

It's not a coincidence that the first target of their backlash is the game's bolstered representation. Critics of this will insist that they're not any "ist" or "phobic," but that this was not the time or place. Maybe they forget that the first game featured a scene in a church, a gay man, and 3 secondary black characters. Or maybe they'll say that those were limited enough to not "distract" from the story; as if representation and the story were ever at odds.

By all means, we should voice dissatisfaction when a piece of media tokenizes a character or acts self-congratulatory about doing so (re: Le Fou in live-action "Beauty and the Beast"). I personally hate when content feels pandering or preachy (re: live-action "Aladdin," I think I'm sensing a theme here). But The Last Of Us II does not do that. It's depicting life, which happens to contain women, Jews, LGBTQ people, and Asians (among others.) So if seeing a piece of media that does not affirm their distorted worldview causes these (presumably) white (definitely) men distress, I feel genuinely bad for them - they're victims of the patriarchy too.

I came across several bugs, albeit minor ones (with one that I needed to reload to fix). The game runs a little long and could stand to be trimmed down a bit and it starts getting formulaic by having nearly every goal be some kind of landmark you're headed to. And finally the story does not conclude in a satisfying way. It doesn't make much sense and there's no time spent justifying it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yes, I have played and fully completed the game before rendering my opinion of it. Overall TLOU2 was emotionally gut-wrenching in a great way. The emotional impacts it had when it had them were amazing and what I have come to expect from Naughty Dog. The graphics, character animations, environments, and gameplay are all amazing! The level of care and detail that they gave to seemingly the smallest things is really amazing. The level of interaction with the environments, the kill animations, all great. Small details like when under a vehicle you shoot on your side and craft on your side instead of just floating the camera like so many other games do. There are too many to list. I very much enjoyed it. I know alot of people have had issues with the story. I have too do toa degree, but not for the standard reasons from what I've heard. I am not upset about how or when Joel died. His death was not a shock. I assumed he would die in this game before any leaks every came out. It had to happen. I get it, I'm fine with it. From the begining I was hooked with the story. The presentation. The darkness of tone and emotion. The death of Joel impacted me and it was some of the biggest feels of the game. I was all onboard with Ellie's revenge plot and totally in untill the second half. When the narrative shifted to Abby (as I assumed it would) I expected a good amount of gameplay but not half of the game. This choice to do this really derailed the momentum of the game for me. I understand what effect they were going for. Seeing the counterpoint to your actions, humanizing the people you've killed, and seeing what Abby has done and will loose due to her actions; like Ellie. The story has them both as morally ambiguous protagonists. But I just didn't care as much as I did for Ellie. This had nothing to do with her having killed Joel - I just never felt connected to Abby or her agency. I felt like this section of the game dragged. At least until the end. The ending was brutal and amazing. Truly depressing and sad. And it was great. I don't care that she let Abby live. I think that was a good moment. But I would have wanted a bit more development around that. Loosing her fingers and Dina in the end. What a gut punch. The number of times I have teared up or cried from this game is a testament to it's strengths, the amazing world, writing and actors in it. I felt it in the first game and it's even more so in this one; these games are post-apocalyptic westerns. This game in particular is essentially an old Western revenge story like that of Unforgiven. It's gritty and dark and depressing and real in so many ways. It really is great and I love the world. I just wish that second half was structured differently for pace and effect. Overall it's a truly great game. But I feel it had the potential to be utterly amazing. But do take I to mind that normally in almost any other game ever - I would not be so critical of these things. It's only because the first game was so good and that this game too is that good, that when aspects of this game don't fully land that it upsetting. I would personally give it an 8/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first chunk of the game seems to be leading to a story that we expect from Naughty Dogs, however, after the first major plot development the story tanks. Most of the characters especially Abby who are introduced have so much time wasted on them, but I never grew to care no matter how hard I tried. They were attempting to craft a story about the consequences of revenge, but it lacked any sort of interesting points, It could be summarized by two words "revenge bad" basically it was a cliche that ruined the experience. Of course, the game looked beautiful and the gameplay was interesting. They developed and expanded well on the systems set up in the first game. Without the crap story and writing, but rather a story of the caliber expected of the series, This game could have been a 10/10. Naughty dogs really managed to make not just a sequel, but a full continuation of this magnificent story.
The story is truly unique - Constantly overwhelming emotions replacing each other, you literally drown in them, it empties you, this is not just a game, it is a separate art form. An important factor is that the game does not divide the characters and their actions into good and bad, it shows the motivation and desire of each of the characters, and it is insanely cool and realistic. This has not happened in video games yet.
Naughty dogs managed to magnificently optimize their creation for a generation of consoles that are already living out their last days, and how this game looks on this hardware is just fantastic, it is impossible to count how many great screenshots I took during this game.

Now to the points that could push you away from the purchase:
LGBT: is present in a small amount that does not affect this magnificent story.
Leaked materials: For the most part, they do not meet the truth, and even if you stumble upon spoilers, this game will still not leave you indifferent and will take away all your emotions.

The game really lives up to its age rating, if you are not ready for serious topics and violence, then this game is not for you.

So I will start with what I liked about the game that at times made it redeemable: the voice acting was great, I enjoyed seeing relationships during the game, the music was great and the scenery/ graphics was beautiful. What I did not like: forcing us to play as Abby to show us her point of view/ trying to make us feel sympathetic for her. The game felt too long and I found myself saying multiple times “is this really still going? Can’t it end” I never felt like that in the first game but this game was painful to play. There was good points that if they had just stayed with it would’ve been better. I felt like they ruined previous characters traits and actions and it felt untrue to the characters. The game kept glitching especially during important scenes. I could go on for hours about it but I feel like this game ruined the first game and I’m choosing to pretend it didn’t exist. Everything I loved about the first game and the dlc for the first game was lost here. The game needed Bruce Straley I guess. My advise is not to play unless you like to be tortured throughout a game with what seems to be torture porn and lazy writing that.

Props to the voice actors and graphic designers though!

Unlike the first game there are no silver linings throughout the story that greatly contributed to the enjoyment of the original Last of Us, as it also carried a lot of weight. There's little to no feel good moments past the first hour or so of the game; all melancholic or upsetting. Combine this with new largely un-relatable characters, it's easy to wish they didn't make this game and left the first game to it's own. This game would have been better suited as either a spin-off or a standalone title; it's really that different from it's origins. Es como hacer un juego cuyo protagonista es Hittler.
De ninguna manera me interesaría un juego así.
Pudo ser un juegazo y termino siendo Death Streanding.

La soberbia los ha hecho caer muy bajo.

Who the hell wants to play a game with a bad character? Reminds me of the Raiden/Snake switch in MGS2. I wanted to play as Ellie the whole time! Other than that there were ton of plot holes, did Joel a disservice, poorly written characters and a horrid ending.
Graphics were great though. As for the gameplay, it was okay. Honestly I expected more. It did not really evolve 7 years later, just some stuff added. Between the horrid story which is important in a game like this and the dated game play, an abysmal 3 out of 10 from me. The games media must have been paid off to rate this game 10/10.

It is unfortunate however we are left with a bad taste in our mouth. The story is seriously lacking and the game play is overhauled completely from the first game, except this time we don't have interesting characters to keep pushing us through the game hour after hour. After some time playing this game i realized i didn't care about any characters, i could have cared less if pretty much anyone died, sadly i was getting so frustrated i started to not even care much for Ellie. I just finished the game and try as i might, i just cannot comprehend how this game received a perfect score across so many professional reviewer. This game just failed to reignited the emotions that the first game have despite its effort to play victim hood.
To be honest, i don't really find the storytelling compelling enough as towards the end, all just seems so pointless. I couldn't care for the graphics because all PS4 Pro graphics are good like God of War and Red Dead 2 so this is really nothing new for a long time gamer as myself.
i replayed TLOU 1 weeks before the release of Part 2 and for Joel to suddenly be so one step ahead of his enemies to freely divulging his identity and be so trusting to a large groups of strangers, i really find it hard to accept. Maybe it would have made more sense if it was a stand alone game (Part 1 never existed). The disconnect is left me dumbfounded,
It is like I am playing this character who looks and sounds like Joel but isn't.
I had expected a smarter, more intelligent way to take Joel out to be honest. It is like they just wanna get over with his character fast and it shows.
Overall, The Last of Us Part 1 is a masterpiece that is just to hard to recreate.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went into this game with so much hope, the last of us was and is still one of my favourite story driven games made. I'd stopped myself from seeing any spoilers before the game was released so I got it ready for another amazing experience like the first game but I was very disappointed, even after the disgusting way they killed Joel off in the very beginning I still had hope but as the game progressed it just showed how disconnected Naughty Dog are with the majority of their fans. This game is so full of senseless violence and hate and just leaves most players feeling empty and sad when they complete the game and don't even get me started on the whole section where you're forced to play as Abby someone who most of us hate as character and continue to hate throughout the second half of the game. Most of the new characters don't have much depth to them and are mostly used as plot devices and the old characters we know and love are changed too drastically, even when Joel is alive Ellie has lost that spark and charisma we all loved even though she's gotten to spend her life safer than most, tommy the man once worthy of his following turns into a murdering psycopath on this path of revenge and honestly so does ellie, its sad to see these characters fall so far.
Though this game has it's high points like the amazing graphics and the absolutely beautiful lighting through the trees and the gameplay which is pretty decent I would not recommend buying this game as there isn't many people who play this game for the gameplay, most of us are here for the story and this game does not do a good job in that department, I really wish I hadn't played it and never knew what happened past the end of the first game.

    2. There's a lot hate in these comments and that's all well and fine people can have different opinions but 80% of the vitriol here would be non existent if this story revolved around straight cis white males let's be honest. These negative reviews pan this or that with hollow excuses that can be seen through. Go into this game with an open mind like I did and I really don't think you'll be disappointed, people are projecting their mindsets and opinions onto this too much because it's not what they wanted.
To combat some critics I just read,
    1. Environmental puzzles are way better in this game it's not just find the ladder/pallet any more there's more options and routes and as such becomes less repetitive.
    2. Stealth is way better, yeah not accurate but hey all games use the hide in tall grass bit.
    3. Stealth is better because it's easier to get back into stealth and because melee/CQC has been greatly improved. The addition of a dodge mechanic makes hand to hand such a better option than the first and much more fun. It's not just button mash square until their dead anymore. You learn how different enemies attack hand to hand. Some are flurry attacks some are one and done, etc... 4. Enemies aren't scripted like the last game which balances the new strength of melee in that you have to be aware of how many enemies are around because they don't do that dumb thing other games do where the enemies will wait for you to get out of a grapple. They will pile onto you which adds more depth to combat.
    5. If you read another users review that says, "How this game is full of such SJW political agenda **** and you agree then yeah probably don't play it because you sound like the type to not be open minded enough to get me involved in the story. Just saying. Oh 6.
Some say they didn't change the gameplay or crafting. To that I say what franchises do, COD hasn't changed in decades, Halo, Rockstar (with their absolutely atrocious gameplay) haven't changed GTA or RDR. ND tweaked and improved enough IMO with the dodge addition, more craftable items, more skills to unlock, and adding more ways to stealth (tall grass, silencers, dogs that track your scent) etc... These complaints are where I really see people just looking for things to point at as flaws so they don't get called out for just mindlessly **** on the game because it has a progressive story and progressive stories that dont directly related to their majority privilege outlook. Tbh I feel sad for these individuals because they are just going to dislike everything that comes out in the future with that mentality

    SPOILER!!!

Like many players here I write this review with much disappointment in my heart. I wish I could give a 10 out of 10 score like so many "pro" media did. But that just isn't how I feel about the game. I truly loved the first TLOU. I am no game designer nor a writer but I think there are many much better ways to continue this saga. In my opinion, Naughty Dog has failed tremendously. YouTuber Skill Up made the prefect comparison pf TLOU2 to Game of Thrones season 8. It's the same level of betrayal and disappointment I feel as a fan.

The technical side of the game is where it shines. I love its visual, graphics, voice acting, music, motion capture, all top-notch work, even next-gen. It's the only reason it still scored a 4 for me. But its storytelling failed spectacularly. The first 10 to 15 hours of gameplay was fun, then it became so repetitive and predictable. All you need was the knife actually to beat the game. The gameplay became mind-numbingly dull, it became something I had to endure just to see the horrible story progress.

Midway through the game, players are forced to play as Abby. A character I was led to despise for her brutal killing of Joel. I hated it. It's such a low-ball emotional manipulation effort I felt I was forced to accept. I hated every blow I delivered to Ellie. The worst part was the grand finale ending. The story just doesn't make any fxxking sense. It felt like emotional cheap shots with no real purpose.

I rarely write reviews, but I feel like Naughty Dog needs to hear this. They've made a horrible game that I waited for 7 years but did not want to waste my time to finish. So I ended up watching YouTube videos just to see how the story ended. I was glad I didn't invest the time to play to the end. I wish I could get a refund on my time and money.

Played and beat it. This game is great, honestly. 95% of the people here rating it poorly haven't played it, and are just hating on it to feel cool or something.

My rating for this game would be somewhere closer to a 7 or an 8, mostly because expectations were super high due to the perfection of its prequel, and this game didn't match up to that perfection. Playing as Abby is the only reason I'm negating any points, simply because it just wasn't as enjoyable as playing as Ellie, obviously, even though I did appreciate a look from her perspective. However, a beautiful game nonetheless. I wanted to give it a bad review until I saw the ending. For most people, the ending was bleak and unsatisfying. To me, it was a perfect wrap up to the game and to the story of Ellie and Joel. I do agree with the angry gamers that Abby deserved to die in the end, but I also completely understand why the developers decided to showcase Ellie letting her go free. As she pictures Joel peacefully playing the guitar before ultimately deciding to let Abby live, I believe Ellie realizes that vengeance will not bring him back. She also can probably see that Abby and Lev somewhat have their own little Joel and Ellie tale going on. With the loss of Ellie's fingers, we see her lose the ability to play the guitar as well as she used to, and this, to me, shows her memories of Joel fading, as she can no longer pass down the last thing she had to offer in his name. The discomfort I felt was similar to that of the end of the last game. While, I agreed with Joel's decision at the end of the first game and didn't necessarily agree with Ellie's decision at the end of the second, doesn't mean I'm going to be angry at it for what it is and what it's made to be: an uncomfortable tale in an uncomfortable universe. The first game was about love and ended with a somewhat "evil" decision. The second game was about hate and ended with a not so evil decision. That's what I love about this series. The uncertainty and the raw human emotion rather than mindless characters with absolute consistencies simply for entertainment. This was a tale about revenge, and all throughout it we could see Ellie begin to get lost in her trauma which causes her to make some inconsistent and really hard to watch decisions, as a real person would. In the first game she mentions to Sam that her biggest fear is being alone, and at the end of the second game we see her deeply alone in her abandoned home attempting to play a guitar with the fingers she has left. Revenge is damaging, and that was the mission of this story. The "good guy" isn't always going to win and the "bad guy" won't always get what they deserve. Naughty Dog has always been ambitious in showing us that truth, rather than putting what everyone wants to see up on the screen. We all want to see a perfect revenge story concluded with, well, revenge, but the developers wanted to tell us a story, and they did. A damn good one too. They gave us a start to a discussion of morality, which is what this game has always been about. Not to mention the graphics and gameplay are phenomenal. In the Ellie segments, I couldn't put my controller down because the combat was so compelling, and so was the story. This is definitely worth a play. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Combat and visuals were good but the story just felt dragged out and they tried to pull more out of the story that was from the first game to try and make another successor to it. And in some ways it did good with the variety of weapons and npcs to fight. But otherwise the story was okay and just didn’t really live up to what I thought they could have done. It’s not worth a “3” I think it deserves higher. As someone who is a member of the LGBT community it did also feel like they focused on including more LGBT characters then what was needed. And most of the characters didn’t really have an impact on me when playing. I do hope they add a dlc or multiplayer. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
