Hate how they deal with the characters not respecting them at all just anyone you start to like or attached to it will die instantly, can't of course talk about Joel's death and how bad it is am not saying that he can't die its reasonable for him to die but not in that way and not in the beginning of the game like this, the story is poor and doesn't make sense at all, letting you play with Abby about 10 hours that character that killed Joel is crazy and letting you fight Ellie and show Ellie as a villain, and an ending that doesn't make any sense and open so that you can make part 3 ???and i hope you don't, the only things that i liked is the graphics and the gameplay and the sounds are done pretty good and the realism in the weapons and i loved the crafting table and how detailed it was loved the face capture of the characters and how they move is really realistic Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My most wanted video game this year, so far...turned to be very disappointing. If we're regarding technical part of naughty dog's product, there are no questions, the game is wonderful, competing with red dead redemption 2's detailing level and graphics. I'm not lying, it's a technical masterpiece. But, regarding the story, i have several questions. What happened to female characters, they're all so ugly, with male-like bodies. I'm not sexist, but it looks weird.
Also, what happened to straight-white males protagonists, they are missing. Also i'm not sexist, but it's discrimination, story runining choice.
In which point of game developement, naughty dog choose to kill Joel and replace him with a weird trans antagonist. This literally destroyed me. Killing the best protagonist of all time, how it's a good choice?
Okay, i'll throw my right-wing education, and ask another question: What happened to the story, it's awful, where's is the excellent the last of us part 1 plot? Okay, but what happened to critics score, why it's higher than first one? Or all critics are just left'wing liberalists that don't give a damn about the actual game, posting payed reviews just to support their ideology? To show that i'm right, look at ign us's review, and highly conservative ign japan's review. I think the second was more trustful. Last few words.
Naughty dog made a game full of liberal, radical feminist, lgbt propaganda, instead of making an actually good product. P.S. I wasn't able to hold my anger until the end of my gameplay, it's just heartbreaking, and i'm hopping that metacritic will not take down my review

The only good about this game are the graphics, animation and feel of gameplay but what made the frist game so great was the story which got totaly butchered in Part 2 joal gets killed like a total idiot and tommy also acts as if he never encountered any steanger gives away all information just like that which gets joel killed, and Ellie is turned to a completly psychopath in emo coating, joel taught elie bever to seek revenge and she litterly spits on everything she learnd from him.
Not gonna lie Abbys part was and felt more human and in touch with the previous story than ellies part which is sad, ellies part litterly made me cheer for Abby, ellie was just annoying and over all the game goes so much into griddyness that it is not real enjoyable to play after a few hours as ellie which is the first time i felt like that playing a video game, this could have been executed much better with a much better outcome but no it also just showed how rigged rating systems are and awards.

No need to lie and say that the graphics in the game went to some new level, this is the same console level that we could see in the Uncharted. No need to lie about the "new innovative gameplay" —it's still mediocre and dull. A game without a good story and characters turned into a disgusting fake. And the storyline with the murder of the protagonist of the last part at the very beginning is the height of stupidity and an attempt to cause unnecessary emotions.
I would put more, but paid reviews of gaming publications completely discouraged.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm saying this as someone that pre-ordered the game, played it, finished it, and never touched it again. Lets get the good out of the way first, because this game has a lot more bad that it should and its a shame. 1. The graphics are some of the prettiest I've seen on the PS4. I have the first release of the console and the game still manages to run extremely well. 2. The gunplay is great. I enjoyed the gunplay in the first game, it having more weight than any third person shooter at the time. 3. The music. Gustavo Santaollala has always done a great job with the Last of Us series. From the disturbing and mysterious opening song of the first game to the soundtrack that plays while travelling Seattle. The music in this game is a must listen if you have the time and desire to. Now let's get on to the bad, and I'll be here for a while. Again, lets get the obvious out the way, the story. Where do I begin? Joel having his skull under par 2 hours into the game? The bland and uninteresting side characters that go along with Ellie and Abby? Abby's half of the plot being flawed and extremely boring? All of these being major problems with this game. Joel was an extremely beloved and cared for character in the first game, but in this, he is used as motivation in the plot and is in the rest of the game via flashbacks. A great and compelling story is driven off of the actions of a character. In this game, the characters are driven off of the story. Abby is the protagonist of the B plot. She is part of a group called the W.L.F. The Washington Liberation Force. Her half of the story consists of side missions and tedious quests for the conclusion of finding Ellie and almost beating her to death. She is such a shallow and terribly written character. Her motivations consist of: finding her ex in a renovated aquarium, then taking it up the ass. Helping a Seraphite girl get her arm cut off to save her, then having the same girl die of getting shot brutally. Then, taking a shemale to California to find the remaining group of Fireflies. Pacing is a super important part of any story, from slow dramatic pauses made to make the audience feel tense, like in Inglorious Basterds, to the fast paced story made to try to grab all the information as quick as possible, like Baby Driver. This simple thing can turn a game from super boring to super interesting. Ellie's part of the story is decent. Being the start of the game, the A plot, this is where a bunch of features need to be introduced. Ellie's story is mostly about the revenge plot of TLOU 2. This is where you have characters like Dina and Jesse. Jesse is so forgettable I had to google who the hell he was. He was a fling of Dina's. They were a thing, broke up, then Dina started dating Ellie. When Dina was dating Jesse, he made her pregnant, thus causing that plot. Ellie's camp is in a theater which funnily enough, the play that was supposed to be going on is on my birthday. That's not a complaint, I just thought it was cool. This is the half of the game where you can kill the pooches. Neil said that you were supposed to feel something every-time you killed a dog or it's owner, but I didn't feel anything. I don't know if it was because I'm a cold hearted bastard or it wasn't compelling enough, but there wasn't any emotional reality in those optional sections. The ending is incredibly disappointing. From the low stakes ending to the downer epilogue, it just was not as good as the last game's ending. Ellie loses two fingers in the fight, losing her only connection to Joel, being able to play the guitar. Except she didn't because of she is talented enough in music, she can learn to play it left handed. Overall, the game's story was terrible and it deserves a lower rating than what the paid off critics gave it. Overall, 3/10. Expand

Simply put, it doesn't deserve Game of the Year: the graphics are actually atrocious, I have taken several screenshots to reflect that; textures of leaves, plants, roots, tiles, books, some electronics are literally DRAWN and 1-dimensional, reminiscent of Ps3 days. The lighting is terrible, Metro Exodus pulled off Ray Tracing, how the hell did Naughty Dog who brag about their graphics not manage to at least have better lightning??? The game is not even open world and there are a dozen of better looking games like Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War (2018), Days Gone (which is a much better version of this game), Metro Exodus --- like how is TLOUP2 not even 4k? If you are sitting there with a 48', 50', 55'' or larger screen, I feel sorry for you.

Gameplay, boring, an absolute chore. Somehow I can't believe that after spending years at a camp, that the characters will only have 1 or 2 bullets in their inventory, and the fact that melee weapons break so easy is hysterical. Like sure, I get that it increases the challenge, but this isn't the early 2010's where games can't find better ways to increase the challenge. A steel pipe or wrench simply won't snap in half after hitting a decaying corpse/clicker.

    Sound: no complaints

Characters, well everyone knows the plot at this point, and I cant say I agree with what the game director thought was a good idea to kill a certain character, even staff at Naughty Dog questioned this. Stupid decision where the game designer tries too hard to be like Michael Bay or Ridley Scott. This is a game, we grow to love characters, we want to be able to control them, not have them and all the hours we spent on them, eliminated from the game leaving us only a teenager to control, like WTF.

3/10 OR 30/100 - I wonder which reviewers PlayStation paid to give this game a good rating. Because it certainly did NOT deserve to win GOTY over Ghost of Tsushima, Hades, Doom Eternal -- games that actually went all out with quality and didn't cut corners or completely ruin the plot.

The game has a very bad narrative, characters and silly cutscense, regardless the gameplay and the enviroment are amazing and perferctly designed but Niel has ruined the entire game because of the following: 1- feminisms: like the most important thing to girls is to be as strong as men.
2- sexuality: It is not an important thing to know the sexuality of the characters.
3- the ending is the worst ending you could have seen, Ellie has killed many people and killed a pregnant woman and in the other side Abby has trained and became like a man just to avenge for her father and she did what she wanted and the only threat to her is Ellie and neither of them killed the other.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 is a true testament to how not to make a sequel for a game. While gameplay received better animations and such, it mostly remained the exact same and becomes monotonous and predictable over the 25+ hour story. While it’s not bad, you'd hope for a much bigger upgrade or overhaul of crafting and other gameplay mechanics, but many remained completely untouched. But the gameplay isn’t what causes this game to be a failure in my opinion, because that’s not what people really play TLOU for anyways. People play for the characters and story, which is nothing short of disappointing and misguided in this game. The utter lack of respect toward previous or even new characters prevents the player from getting invested in them, and the game fails to utilize the one relationship the player was already invested in going into the game. Instead they demolish that relationship, and never really show it getting back to anything of what it used to be. Most other characters in this game are stagnant and replaceable, and while they have good performances, fail to make me care about them in a meaningful way. That is, until they get brutally murdered on a quest for revenge. By the end of the game I was so numb to violence nothing shocked me anymore, and I’m not sure what the game was even trying to say through all this violence and misery. What I do know is that I feel devastated for Ellie and deep hatred for another character. I truly hope Naughty Dog lets this franchise die in the pit they dug for it. I absolutely loved the first game, but this train wreck wants me to feel depressed for nothing. Some of the lessons it tries to teach seem so stupidly simple I asked myself if I was even hearing it right. All I can hear now is the ringing in my ears after listening to one of my favorite games get pillaged and massacred in the name of “Subverted Expectations”. Do not recommend. Expand

Gave it a 3 just for the gameplay. The reason TLOU part one is among the best video games ever made was the connection and attachment towards the characters, the emotional journey that leads to the enjoyment and bittersweet ending of it. While in Part two.. well, I don't even know what to say. Damn you naughty dog, and damn you Neil.

The plot/pacing/character development are so bad that it ruins the experience - it's giving me mass effect 3 flashbacks. You could have kept all the same messages and had a much better game if you had better pacing and character development (even just moving the order of things around). Some much of the great game play is ruined by the frustration of the previous cutscene that you can't enjoy it - and to those saying hey that empty unhappy, everything was meaningless feeling you get when you finish was the goal, "the game is supposed to have that"...why would I want my video game to end like that? Sad and frustrated sure, deep meaningful tragedy is powerful - not what we got here. Try and justify the experience all you want, but I would have been happier not having the Last Of Us world ruined for me by playing this game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Its clear to me a lot of talent went in to making this. The visuals and animations are top notch. The voice acting and sound design is great. This is where the game earned its 3 points for me. But the gameplay is forgettable at best. Still none of those elements are the reason you play Last of Us. You play, for better or worse, for the story. I think all those elements would have been better served by watching a collection of the cinematics, which you could experience for free on Youtube. I do not see any value in playing this game.

So what do I think of the story? The story is a collection of plot devices loosely tied together with poorly written dialogue from mostly new unlikable characters. All the while making previously established likable characters into unlikable characters. The plot points, though controversial, aren't the problem. Its the execution. Its everything in between. Thinking back on the first game the only really interesting plot point comes at the end with Joel deciding to save Ellie. The rest of the game is just a road trip and a cure for the zombie apocalypse. Nothing particularly exciting or groundbreaking by itself. Its the moments in between -the character interactions- that makes the Last of Us 1's story so great. And those little moments fail here. This fails at the most critical level where the first game succeeded.

My recommendation? Don't be like me. Don't waste the 60 dollars. Watch it on Youtube for free and be disappointed for free.

Clearly, a lot of hard work has been put into this game: "The Last of Us Part 2" is a technical falling angel, an achievement with a lot of polish and care with a core that's just cliche and empty - the opposite of a rising phoenix.

In its strangest irony, it brings nothing to the table in terms of art and storytelling, but will probably be used as a milestone for graphics and gameplay AI with environment design for future video games. I will even agree to the awards that it may achieve due to this.

The pacing and structure of the story is absolutely awful and disengaging: worst of all, I don't feel challenged - both as a gamer and as an audience for these kinds of things; this game hits every revenge-story trope in the most monotonous way possible. This shocked me greatly since "The Last of Us (Part 1)" does not have these issues at all - at least not significantly. It was saddening for me to be able to tell every beat from the beginning to the end after going into a blackout to avoid the leaks until this very day.

The character development is entirely dependent on "The Last of Us (Part 1)" with the new characters being utterly disposable or being only useful as tools for the story to get on with the next beat. If you are a person who reads books and/or watches television shows and movies about this genre, this game has NOTHING to offer aside from spectacle - no doubt from the money and time and effort invested into this video game to brute force this story to work.

It is also no doubt that the reviewers who blatantly threw high scores for this game have no experience in this genre at all and - thus - are not competent reviewers if they're trying to argue for the sake of this story's quality. Speaking of which, it is - at its very best - boring and unsatisfying with no shock value. Again, if you are familiar with the revenge-story trope of how it's corrupting and all, this is nothing new: even the ending of "The Last of Us Part 2" is an exact copy of some other stories and movies - totally lacking all sense of originality like a teenager in his or her hormonal years after watching an edgy dark movie.

Since the video game claims itself to be story-centric, I give a 3 out of 10 for "The Last of Us Part 2".

1 point for the fact that every single level in this game looks atmospherically beautiful while being accompanied by good level design.
1 point for the fact of how the AI interacts with the environment so naturally for the gameplay to exist so smoothly and wonderfully, and - by that - players experience intriguing combat scenarios.
1 point for the motion-capture actors' and actresses' performances along with the animators who gave their blood and sweat to every little detail.

    But that's it.
For a game bragging itself to be story-centric, I cannot - in good will - give it any higher for its technical quality as it is - literally by the word - nihilistic in the end and with no value for the person experiencing.

What is the point of experiencing a technical achievement if its core trick can be seen anywhere else and gives no reason to follow until its end?

With that, I can only recommend "The Last of Us Part 2" to people who have barely scratched to experience art and revenge stories, and to people who would be interested in experiencing the remarkable polish.

Gameplay: 3/10 - here is where things take a dip, how is the gameplay not any better (or even worse at times) than from the prior entry that is 7+ years old? It's not innovative, glitchy, non responsive sometimes, and overall very shallow and got boring within a few hours
Story: 1/10 - it seems that the writers completely missed what made the original game good. This game disrespects characters, has others make irrational decisions that do not align with their personalities nor the plot, introduces new characters that are unfortunately irrelevant (sorry but we don't care about them), and lastly lacks any message/theme/point in the end. What is the takeaway from this game? What did we learn or think about? It contradicts all the takeaways of the original, it contradicts itself and its new narrative, and frankly it doesn't make sense at the end. Maybe next time Sony should have less political messaging in their game and more competent writers.

For people who believe that the wave of negative criticism only comes from gender propaganda, it is false. In the first part, in fact, this type of things already happened in the DLC and there is nothing more to see the note that it has on this website.

All this this comes from how they have trampled on the story of the first, its protagonist and everything that is sown in it, the characters feel humans and act as I or anyone else could do in the same situation in a world like there. And that makes it a masterpiece.

Here the story is artificial, a series of meaningless things are planted, you get hidden gender propaganda that is not relevant to the end of the world (perhaps because they are problems of the 21st century, and not problems of a post-apocalyptic world) and that are not of interest to the player and are also not relevant to the resolution of the plot. And well, if we leave this in the background and go to the final resolution, it is directly embarrassing. Don't **** with me, the first game has a bittersweet ending, even more sour than sweet, but this ... with this you can't empathize, it's artificial, it's empty, there's no "us", it doesn't have the values or the feelings from 'The Last of us'

The first part is soo ****ing good because is a a "human" game. Here's an outstanding game in gameplay and technically, but only that. The rest is only on the giant shadow from what their first part was.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics are amazing, music (when it's there) is terrific, gameplay is great; but the story is soooo generic and uninteresting. And it has nothing to do with what most vocal people say about the SJW themes or characters, is just that the "boldness" they were trying to bring was straight up bad. Gameplay and story aren't connected, you spend the entire game killing, and only in the "key moments" do Ellie or Abby feel "regret" or pain. The game does not give the player a "choice" to kill or spare (knock out) an enemy; like in Death Stranding, where you CAN kill enemies but it has a penalty, so you try to avoid it. In THLOU2 you just kill and nothing bad happens. And at a point Abby even kills her own comrades, they say her name when she holds them, meaning they know her and she has a relationship with them, but she doesn't feel bad about killing any of them? Only at that key moment she feels "bad". Both Ellie feels bad for killing a pregnant woman, and Abby draws the "same line", but then what about all the other women they've killed? Any of them could've been with child, and neither would have known, but both killed them without remorse. And I kinda can get behind the decision to kill Joel. But to do so liked that, was weak and rushed. Also Ellie was a character that didn't wanted to have to face loss again and again, and she treasured good things in that horrible world, and she can get mad at Joel for his confession, but still she wouldn't have done what she did, lose everything just to win, I don't buy that. There's no character development for the characters that we love, there "some" character development for the new ones but it is so lazy and bare boned. Some side characters die so suddenly, that as a player you don't care, showing that nothing would've changed if they weren't in the game. The sex scene had no point to being there, it had no consequence, or cause. It's a shame what they decided to do woth the story, and the characters we loved from THLOU. The game has good things, but they are dragged down due to that poor story and lousy writting. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although the game is astonishingly beautifully done, what cautivated me from TLOU 1 was the dialogs and the characters. Part 1 storyplot was motivated by love, being that love at the beggining broken from Joel, but Elie manages to heal that and it´s what drives the plot ultimately to me. In a very sick and apocaliptical world they manage to help themselves and the story plot leaves you with a wonderfull feeling of father-daughter love story.

This second part is the opposite, it does not build upon anything good, it left me unhappy to pay this story. In my opinion, although the game is well done, the story is a failure, and that was what i tought was most great from the first part, and what compelled me to get the second. A shame, i was hoping to play a game that left me that same good taste in the mouth, a story about pushing yourselve to be better. TLOU 2 is the opposite and leaves everyone broken, and you are just part of it without beign able to do anything about it.

This was not a story that i wanted to experience, in my oppinion the plot is bad, it doesn´t matter how well it´s done. If a movie plot is bad it doesn´t matter how well it´s done, the movie is bad. This is the same in mu oppinion.

And i do not expect to play the game ever again, i regret even playing it the first time. I did play TLOU 3 times, even with the PS4 enhaced version, and is still one of my favorites.

A three is what this game deserves, and only because it is very well done.

However the story, the main driving force behind this game is incredibly flawed and has thrown out the quality that the prequel had established. Original characters were handled in a disrespectful manner, and had their personalities altered to fit a narrative the developer tried to pursue and failed. The game is absolutely NOT fun. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hello, Neil Druckmann. You know, I almost believed you, but no! Thank! In Russia, games for the PlayStation 4 cost quite impressive money and therefore not everyone is ready to immediately run to the store and get a copy of the game, so some individuals like me start to “play” it on YouTube, so, just in case, suddenly it's worth spending your own money on **** From the first hours of the game, I saw just a giant leap in terms of gameplay and staging cutscenes, I just fell in love with new game mechanics, improved stealth, the beauty of locations, even the plot of the plot (the first time is a **** story about another revenge, hello Assassins Creed, it really worked and I wanted to break the ass for all those bastards who had filled up the character of this game that was loved by the whole world) and I was already determined to buy this “masterpiece” of the gaming industry, but ... well, because of my excessive curiosity I decided continue to “play” it on YouTube until you have extra money in your pocket and all my previously acquired impressions have come inevitably! That is, in the opinion of a good game designer, when a person spends 10-15 hours of playing time “disclosing”, improving and linking to a character, he needs to take all this away and give control to a completely uninteresting character, to whom a normal person should hate ( otherwise your storyline doesn’t work) and go split up an uninteresting group of fanatics (decide personal affairs, so to speak)? Are you serious, didn’t anyone tell you that this should not be done? Or, you just had to emphasize the inappropriate power and independence of a woman and an transgender woman who had become obnoxious with anabolics by the name of “Lev”, what the **** ?! Your moral message is not that violence gives rise to even more violence, but that you call "chauvinism" when an elderly person makes a remark to two passionately kissing women surrounded by children and normal couples of different ages, in Russia this is called "healthy meaning". Are your bold decisions cold-blooded killings of animals, pregnant women and constant breaks in relations between normal gender couples? Does Anita Sarkeesian “advise” you about this? I’ll tell you a secret, Anita fans, including herself, in your games, wake up! You kill a nice character, only to let his child be raised by two strong and independent women on the ranch, you shoot Tommy’s head only so that he later appears in the frame as a one-eyed pirate of the seven seas and starts your vaunted “chain of violence” again in order to stretch the game for several more hours and so that in the end, at the end of the game, people have only emptiness in their hearts. Your promise and your bold decisions, Mr. Neal, destroyed all the labors of those people who gave all their physical and moral strength to create this game. It was an investment in the abyss. Evaluation of the press does not cost anything, you forgot that the games are created for the players, that's the result. I put 8 points for gameplay (-1 for tightness, -1 for large but empty locations), and for everything else I put "play it yourself Neil Druckmann." Final score 3, I would like to put below, but this would have been unreasonable. Expand

When 7 years ago it was announced, we all hoped for something groundbreaking. Unfortunately, cult around Neil Druckmann's writing was wrong (including me). This game is beautiful, not Red Dead Redemption level of graphics, but it's amazing (what's funny, Uncharted 4 looks very similar). Gameplay is the same old game with newer animations, which is good if you love the first one. But the story, oh boy, the story. Killing Joel right on the beginning without any respect was the worst decision of the franchise. Models we're swapped, Joel from trailerS was replaced by Jesse. Joel in some scenes was replaced by young Joel, so he was not part od the story, this was just a flashback scene. And the worst... Game forces you to play as Joel's killer for almost 12 hours. Writing is cheap, full of plotholes. No one had a problem with Ellie being gay. Left Behind has great reviews. But Naughty Dog tries to tell people if they do not like this game, that means they are bigots. They made mistake, an enormous one, but they will not admit it. Franchise ruined. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you really enjoy games, like the first installment, which hold character building as a core element to it's narrative. You are going to HATE this game. Usually in a "sequel" built off of main characters, you keep typically expand upon what u already got to know and love about each main character, in this garbage. You instead have to face the fact that the company wanted to try something they thought was fresh. Which instead ends up being a complete slap in the face of the original intention. I went into this expecting to have to shocking moments, yes. But not completely killing off both main characters to try pushing some alt-narrative in order to try appealing to a larger fan bases while at the same time telling actual fans to go kick rocks is absurd. Who does that? Not even terrible C rated movies do your main ppl like that. While this on the other hands feels like the developers thought that ruining the legacy of both Ellie and Joel and making it some lame gender neutral twist as something the majority could relate to is beyond words. What kind of b.s PR do they have? Who is ever going to take them seriously again. Like idk about you but I was invested in Ellie and Joel after the first game. So why the F would they decide to end thier stories so abruptly and give no credence to thier potential arch. While now you HAVE to like Abby as she will end up being the next character in tlou 3. Yet no one actually liked her to begin with! Hell she's the c*** who killed joel in the first place, why would you make a game to follow her steps? Do you think The Lord of The Rings would of been the same if JRR Tolkien killed off Frodo, Aragon, and Gandalf in the begining of the 2nd film? Absolutely not! The Main characters you got to love in the 1st are what makes the rest. While yes adding some new ones can enhance the overall depth but you simply can't rely on a 3rd installment having nothing to do with the main characters but instead some PR b.s. that holds no depth or care to its audience or the story that was originally supposed to be told. Because if you wanted to created a zombie game with different characters, name it something else. F*** this game, and the next one. Save your money,. Also P.S character interactions in this game do not represent how real life is actually structured.

3 out of 10 for ruining the whole reason why you played the 2nd in the first place.

While the gameplay was captivating enough for me to finish the game at least once I don't see myself replaying this game just because of the story alone. It was a poorly written mess that left a sour taste in my mouth like no other piece of media before. I will remember this game, not because I enjoyed playing it, but simply because I hated it that much. Don't waste your money on this. Expand

Gameplay is solid. That said, this game does not resolve their own plot and feels frustrating with Neutral outcome and no resolve at each step of all your efforts. Simply said you are irrelevant in the outcome of the Story.

The rating is for the visuals, sounds and the gameplay. The first one was one of my all time favourite game. I expected the story to be so much better after the first one.

The game is roughly divided in 4 parts, intro, Ellie, Abby, ending. In the intro and ending the 2 characters take turns in part of the story, but most of it is Ellie. In between you have a big chunk of gameplay as one character divided into 3 days each.

When I got about halfway into the story and the timeline reset to day 1 and the perspective changed to Abby, I got a sinking feeling. Which became worse when I opened the menu and saw the skill trees and craftables. I realised I would be playing as Abby for the next big chunk of the story.

I had no positive connection with her or any of her friends other than the intro in which she killed Joel. She killed off one of the important characters of the first game and now I had to play as this character without any further context (which does come some chapters later through a flashback). Though it was fairly predictable and I didn't care for it.

If that wasn't bad enough, this game's characters seems to be written around a social politics checklist.
    - Gay people, check
    - People of colour, check
    - Transgender people, check
    - Manly women, check
    - Kill off almost all of the men, check

It's fine to have these in a story, but not as a characters main defining feature. Most of the characters are bland and have barely any development throughout the game.

Ellie's flashbacks showed glimpses of what the game should have been.

While I could relate so much with the first game, I felt nothing in this game's big "emotional" events. I didn't care much when any of the characters died and the ending was very dissatisfying.

They tried to make everyone that plays the game start hating Joel that when his death had come into the game nobody would mind, however due to the nature of the antagonist and how swiftly Joel was killed (and brutally) they make it impossible to think of the 2nd playable character Abby as an enjoyable time, instead it is a slog that drags on and on till near the end of the game, where the ending is neither great or interesting, a point to where I was lucky to buy the game at a low price 2nd hand, and yet I still feel like I had wasted my money. Atreus will look for the killer rest of time and in the end he’ll let killer go, although the killer will bite off two of his fingers and he will not be able, for example, to do some of his magic, or whatever. Or you can imagine the same with Geralt and Ciri (if there will be the next Witcher game.) If this is ok for you, then you might like this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am not sure where to begin with this title, but I will say this: TLOU was an amazing, heart-felt, beautifully crafted and written game. Seven years later, this pile gets dumped on us. In an effort to be as fair as I can, the visuals, animations, voice acting, and world are amazingly well done. But...that's not why I wanted to play this game. The gameplay is stale - it does little to iterate or improve on a legacy system (PS3) on the next-generation console (PS4).

The main characters that I loved so much didn't even seem the same. Joel doesn't act like Joel, Ellie doesn't act like Ellie, and ham-handed new characters that also don't make much sense. The story is shoved down your throat, there is no choice involved, and - lest we call forget - revenge is bad. Unless you're a character named Abby who has cake and eats it too.

Oh, and you play multiple hours as a ho-hum character that I just couldn't bring myself to give a crap about. The depth of character from the first game is starkly missing.

Not worth the buy. 3/10 because its sound, acting, and visuals were amazing. Aside from that? Eh, if you're curious, watch a VOD of gameplay on YT or your favorite streaming platform.

Imo they managed to turn one of the greatest stories in gaming into a boring (but cringe inducing and gore-filled) and poorly written revenge romp with no subtlety. Be prepared - they're gonna beat you over the head with their message that "violence and revenge bad" but they're not doing it well. Actually struggled to finish it as opposed to the first where I could barely put it down for weeks even after my first playthrough.

Felt nothing for Abbys crew and her story as by the time i got there I just didnt care, the build wasnt done anywhere near as well and the brutality of the world was well known.

Even the parts as Ellie were just a lonesome grueling slog, making me feel even less for her as the story and good works in 1 were undone with plotholes and unbelievable actions.
I now kinda regret saving her in the first - Not because of the lack of cure and everything that happened after, but purely because of who ND turned her into in the sequel.

As a story centric game, this one ultimately is an almost literal pain to play. You literally may just quit half way through asking yourself "What am I doing this for? " 3 is the adjusted rating after weighing storytelling , writing, and direction appropriately. It's technically well done, but you can cook a rotten piece of meat to perfection, and it still is a rotten product. That's this game. Wasted opportunity. No replayability.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
