Part 2 takes everything you know and then throes it out the window. Joel all of a sudden trusts a bunch of stangers and gets killed in the most awful way after that the story gets worse and then worse before you finally get to then end for the worst ending in gaming history. Sure tbe visuals, the gameplay is decent and so is the audio but who cares when the story is this crap with naughty Dog seemingly hell bent on pushing an agenda no one cares about. We just wanted a story that made sense but that was too difficult to deliver. In any case once you play through this **** you will want something to clean the bad taste away from your mouth. Expand

It was falsely marketed to hide the fact the story is not about Joel and Ellie, but a horrible torture porn revenge plot. Our old beloved characters are made into villans and brutally discarded along the way.

The main theme of the game is "revenge is bad" but Abby gets her revenge and lives happily ever after?

I regret buying this piece of **** game.

I don't normally review games, but something really needs to be said about TLOU2 before it's brigaded into a good user score by dishonest folks. I get part of the marketing was "game isn't meant to be fun" "it's a dark story" etc etc. The reality is the story is just plain in your face a massive f**k you to fans. TLOU1 was one of the last PS3 titles I ever bought before generation leap, and I loved it. Ellie was a bratty but likable teen girl under the care of Joel was a cautious survivalist that'll kill you in cold blood if you even gave him a whiff of being a hazard to either of them. TLOU1 story was overall enjoyable with generally good themes, and a bitter sweet ending depending on personal feelings on what you'd do in that position. Without giving away too much away about TLOU2, both characters seem like different people all together with awful consequences in the sequel. What's worse is you play as a third character who is 100% unlikable in every way that they try to get you to feel sympathy for despite what she does to Joel and Ellie early on. Then when it's all over, you feel absolutely zero satisfaction, the game's plot ends just as senselessly as it began. Sony's first party single player exclusives get criticized as "movies not games" which isn't entirely unfair, but usually the story is at least at a movie level of quality so you enjoy them anyway. This one's gameplay is just the first game's rinsed off and presented to us again with slapped on gimmicks like dogs. Which would be fine if the story wasn't one of the worse ever in a modern videogame. I can't honestly think of a single story between 2006 and now that I hate more. What a disaster. I'm giving the game a 3 because there is nothing redeeming about it other than it's visuals and that'll be short lived with next gen around the corner. I'd probably rate it higher if Sony and Naughty Dog weren't so toxic and misleading about the game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As you guys might be able to check my profile I only write reviews when I feel strongly about a game, and in this case I do.

I was anticipating this game greatly, however as trailers came out and later videos discussed the relationship of Cckman and sarkasien(however it is spelled) and their agenda made me wary. Then the spoilers came, then the lockings and bannings, eventually the game is out and we all see that the leaks were true. The disgusting nature of the writing and story is something that most people find repulsive, as the current 20000 positive to 40000 negative reviews show as well.(At the time of my writing, it took this **** website nearly 2 months ALLOWING me to post a negative review on this crap)

Since the shills are out in numbers, and are giving 10s it is only fair that this game gets 0s too in response. My actual score would be about 3, it is an extremely boring and tedious game with hardly any action and way too much downtime. I wouldn't recommend it. It simply pales in comparison to the first game, and compared to that it is indeed a 3 at best. Cckman got everyone fired, Naughty Dog is not what it was in the ps3 era. And it will only get worse as time goes by and we enter the ps5 era.

Get the heck out of here with your SJW(communist) agenda, cultural revolution and eventual genocide.

I got the game used from a friend that got it early, if you must get it, buy it used if you care for the future of gaming!!!! Don't give any corporation money for this brainwashing bs.

As a final note: professional reviewers have been a joke for years, and that is only getting worse as well.

Now first off I would like to say that none of the negative press, leaks, or even the opinions of others has or had an effect on how I see view this game. as side note however, while I like the first Last of Us a lot I wouldn't say it's a master piece and isn't even in my top ten favorite games so I wasn't on the hype train for this game. I only finally decided to get and play this game after a friend of mine said I could borrow his copy. It should have been a red flag for me seeing that he himself said "he was more interested in playing FF7 now" which I let him borrow from me. He's more the Last Of Us fan than I am for haven sake! Sorry for tangent. Also I will not write any spoilers for this game just because of principle so do not worry.

First off, about first 9.5 hours of this game might be the best start to any game I have played on the Ps4. Seriously it had it all; action, drama, and the feels. It was like experiencing Game of Thrones season 1 all over again. It honestly it even renewed my interest to play first game after beating this one. Also the cut-scenes and game models are truly stealer and gives me hope for what will come out of Naughty-Dog next. So your probably wondering if I had that much fun and excitement from this game up to this point why am I giving it a 3/10? Well It was at the moment that you probably already know now that is the most controversial part of this game, I mean I get why they did and why it's a bold move. Other games have done similar stuff in the past but for some reason the scene left me with nothing but rage, disappointment, and being dumbfounded at the situation of the scene itself. After that scene for me it only seemed to go downhill and was only somewhat back to sprites after a few more scenes of Ellie and her partner (fyi I'm part of the LGBT and I have no problems with LGBT characters, so no I'm not just some dummy who hates gay peolpe) but even those got dry. Than it happened the change of character, it was at this point I know I would hate this game with a passion. They tried to justify some of the choices of this said character and what she did but it only did nothing but fortify my anger and even made me feel more dumbstruck at the idea of this being game passing Naughty-Dog's quality inspection. Didn't anyone try to stop the development and go "maybe this could be done better"? Now after countless now boring repetitive fights, uninspiring missions, and character switching I finally was approaching the end of the game. Now I was going to forgive this games past sins if the ending was executed in a ways that was both fulfilling and brought this to an end with a nice bow on top. However this game found a way to both make the ending feel generic and yet so unsatisfying that even contemplated buying this copy from my friend s I can only smash it and throw it away. For real!!!! This might be the worse ending that I have experienced with a triple. Worse than Mass Effect 3 in fact! Finally after all that I was done, just me in my room seething at what I just witnessed. The cliffhanger even felt not needed at all!

With all this said and done I really can't recommend this at full price. I would say $35 is a more fitting price for a game like this. I'm more upset at the waste of potential this game could have been, I didn't even love the Last of Us and even I felt this was a poor excuse of a follow up. I now know why so many fans are angry. I guess I will take a page from my friend and play another game like Horizon Zero Dawn or something else that truly give a good female character and a good story to boot. Buy the game if you want but be warned, I'm just glad my money never went to this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I have finished the entirety of the game now, and had a day to digest the story, so this isn't a knee jerk review.

Firstly, I'd like to start by saying that the first Last of Us game, is quite literally the only game I would ever give a perfect and full 10/10 score to. Anything else is just edging a 10, where as that game filled the 10 to almost being an 11. So I was clearly counting down the days to the sequel, quite literally in fact for the week leading up to it's release. I'd avoided the leaks, didn't read articles and only watched a few of the trailers. I knew without a doubt I would love this game, it was a done deal, even before playing it. Then 2 hours into the game, that was no longer the case.
Don't get me wrong the visuals, sound and atmosphere of the game, the controls, animations, everything is complete perfection......that is, except for the story, the characters, and the writing. The very thing that made the first game such a huge, emotional, perfect experience. It's just not here, the story of part 2 plays out more like a bad fan fiction than a realistic depiction of anything the characters would do. Its not just badly done, it's truly awful, and the only reason this game gets a score of 4 is due to the gameplay, visuals and audio. I quite honestly can't believe I'm giving this game such a low score. I can't comprehend how they got it all so very wrong.
This isn't even a review bomb, this is my genuin score after putting around 50 hours into the game. I explored every building, every dialogue prompt, every room, every draw, trying to experience everything possible that I could, but none of that can make up for the story. THAT WAS THE ONLY THING THEY HAD TO GET RIGHT!

Graphicly it's almost unbelievable to thing it's running on a PS4, it looks like a late stage PS5 game, no exageration. It's like watching a movie as it's so realistic, the lighting is astounding, the textures are so sharpe and real looking, especially on the PS4 Pro. and then there is the audio, man, the audio is like nothing I've heard before. It's better than movie quality as there is more clarity, it's like getting a speaker upgrade, every little crack of twigs, shuffle of feet on muddy ground, the wind in the trees, and the clickers! well, they somehow sound so much more terrifying than in the first game. Gunshots are improved too, you feel like a gun is going off in the room with you, the loud punchy bang, the whiz of shots flying around you, the music adding so much atmosphere, elevating your heart, it's amazing, genuinely.......But the entire story, characters all acting differently than they did in the first game, what feels like forced diversity just jammed in there, and I have no idea with diversity, I actually welcome it, but this feels like it's been forced into the story for the sake of it. Story beats with no reason being patched in to cover up other plot holes. the whole thing is such a mess. They could have done so much more with it. Naughty dog, Rockstar Games and CD Projekt Red, where my 3 most trusted game companies, after playing Uncharted 4, I fully trusted them with this, so much so that I made only my second Pre order ever, my first being Red Dead 2.

Right now I'm grieving for the loss of a great company, I don't see them recovering from this. Im grieving for all the characters of this world, both the ones who dies and the ones who lived. The only character I wanted to die, actually survived!
I'd go as far as saying that this almost makes the first game pointless (a game I might add, I've played though 10 times at least) to the point that I might never play it again.

I pray that Naughty Dog right this wrong with a patch, change certain things, they could recover this, but corporate greed will more likely mean that this will be written off as a fail and dropped for good.

This is now my biggest gaming regret, and will be the last game I ever pre order.

The deception of replacing Joel into sections where it was actually Jesse, and making it seem like you'd play as Joel and Ellie in the main story, that's poor form from Naughty Dog, We have been miss sold to, and I will be requesting a refund due to being deceived in the marketing material.

Not only the story was incredibly screwed and unnecessarily prolonged to say the obviousm (perhaps to increase gameplay time), but also the games forces you through a single view seeking you to accept the victimization of a criminal in the game(not gonna add spoilers here, but who played this one knows whom I'm talking about).
Besides that the "visceral" violence in the game that some of the (PAID) press is praising is actually done in a way that psychologically screwed up the developers involved.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's begin with the good stuff:

    - INSANE graphics, even on the original PS4. Makes you wonder what kind of graphics we'll see on the PS5. Insane level of detail and absolutely LOVELY on the PS4 PRO on a 4K Television. We have to congratulate Naughty Dog for the game's optimisation and looks on a 7 year old gaming hardware.

    - Gameplay mechanics were improved and new tactical opportunities have surfaced, with hiding under cars, beds, distractions, grass. You have multiple ways of approaching the same encounter.

    - Amazing difficulty and accessibility settings. So many choices and custom difficulty settings to make the experience however you want.

    And now for the negatives:

    - No innovation on the gameplay aspect. And I don't mean the mechanics as I mentioned above. I mean the actual execution of the gameplay. You scavenge, you craft, you upgrade weapons just like you did in the first game. Nothing changed on that matter.

    - The story is ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS. They could have taken on so many different approaches, but the result was awful. We were forced Abby down the throat, the decisions of the characters of the first game are plain stupid, there are plot armours everywhere, the new characters are not being properly introduced fr us to care about them. In general, ND's practice was manipulative, they tried so hard to make us like Abby that it resulted to stupid decisions by everyone.

    - The ending. In the end, nothing in this game mattered. In the first game, there was the hope of the cure. It ended with us thinking of the consequences of the choices Joel made. We thought that we would be paid off in the second game. But no, it's as if the cure was forgotten. With this game's ending, what can we look forward to fot Part 3? Nothing. All the characters are broken, no revenge was exacted, no buildup for the next game EVER happened.

    - This game was advertised as Ellie's Revenge. But in the end, it was all about Abby. Naughty Dog even restricted reviewers not to talk about the second half of the game. ND even went to the length of changing character models from the game to the trailers (I am talking about the Joel-Jesse swap), leading to misleading and false advertising for the game.
    - Joel's Death: Listen. I for sure don't give this a negative for the sole fact that Joel died. It's how we get to it. Joel was a major character and NOTHING about his death are even close to Joel's character. His death was too early in the game, he could give us much more and he could died later in the game, after we have played with Ellie and him, actually living the consequences of Joel's decision to save Ellie. Then we could play as Abby, experiencing her side, with her father's loss, how she met all these people and justifying the revenge against Joel. Then, they find each other and the game ENDS with Abby killing Joel and Ellie setting for revenge, possibly setting a part 3.

In the end, save your money and buy the game solely for gameplay and graphics, but only after it is half price or something. Do not expect a big payoff or the characters you love.

Why is that you might ask? Well I will try to provide a metaphor for my problems with this game. Imagine, if you will, the most beautiful cake you have ever seen, imagine a piece of it on your plate and imagine the perfect taste that it will leave in your mouth when you eat it. Now deal with the reality that you will only get one spoonful of that cake and the rest of the cake will be replaced by trash picked up on the side of the road. If you would have to rate the perfect cake, it will be a 10, but the whole experience was kinda dreadful, therefore a 2.

So how did that happen? Well the graphics in this game are amazing, the atmosphere of walking through the world is breathtaking. The character animation is spot on, and there is even a scene where one of the characters removes a shirt over her head, perfectly without any clipping and perfect animation! This is insane! The music is just perfect and the sound design, from weapons to zombies to everything is truly great. Well what is the problem then? Easy: You are forced to play more than 50% of the playtime as one of the most unlikable antagonists I ever had to deal with. Bad writing in video games happens a lot, and I have learned to deal with it, but never have I been made to suffer through a bad story on the wrong side of the story. It is like getting bad with bad, and it is so bad, that at some point I just started running through the encounters because I wanted to be done with them. And this has nothing to do with Transgender or whatever. I couldn't care less about the Gender or lack thereof of any of the characters, I am talking about PERSONALITY here. I get what Naughty Dog was aiming for, trying to make me understand, trying to get my to sympathize, showing a different side to the story. But if the story is fairly one dimensional to begin with, it really doesn't help to force me to play it from a viewpoint that is so unlikable that I consider it a platinum trophy to just having finished the game.

So with that in mind, I cannot bring myself to give any better score than 2.

I'm a 30+ years old man who loves video games but has limited time to play them. In short, this video game has great visual, good mechanics (slightly better than the previous one) but a story badly written, full of plot holes and conveniences. After 43 hours playing this game, it was a torture and a waste of time, a time unfortunately I don't have.

It’s rather difficult as an adult to continue playing the game after a couple of hours of listening to a storyline that is so focused on teenage girl gossip; “how would you rate our kiss last night”? So much teenage talk it’s distracting.
Also, you know what folks, not everything has to be LGBTQ. Zero issues on the topic. It just seems that everyone has jumped on this bandwagon.

Every. Single. Time. This is entirely different from the Last of Us. The game seems like it's trying to tell me that cruelty and wanton murder is bad, yet it's forcing me into wanton murder and cruelty.

I already don't like it. As well-made as it is, as beautiful as it is, and as much a step up in terms of gameplay as it is, the game itself is not (so far) a worthy successor to The Last of Us. I shouldn't be made to feel bad for my actions in a game when I have zero choices as to how to act.

Shame on Naughty Dog. They can do better than this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With The Last of Us II, they went for something different from the first game. You don't get two characters solving problems and slowly growing together throughout the game. What they did is interesting in concept and could have been great had they pulled it off. They tried to tell both sides of a story where no one is in the right. While at the same time making it subversive and obsessively mirroring events. Some of it works. But ultimately they failed to sell the key story points. Some of them failed just because they wanted to have a surprise twist 60% through the game and the ending just doesn't work on any logical or emotional level for me.

The game suffers from pacing problems, So you have a game that starts and has some light character building and immediately hits you with the lowest point in the game. Then it goes full murder hobo for 10+ hours while building to a crescendo and then coitus reservatus... They rewind time to give you another viewpoint for 10 hours before it jumps off a cliff complete with a picture-perfect ending that turns out not being the ending before the real ending, another coitus reservatus.

Both arcs in the game stretch on too long. When Ellie is on the mission that results in her reuniting with Jesse I realized that I was bored with killing WLF. I just wanted the game to get to the point. I didn't care about killing Abby's friends I just wanted it to move on. The same thing happened to me when Abby was headed to the Marina and at that point, I knew Yara was dead as soon as she got her stump wet and I knew it was a coin flip between Lev or his Mom being dead.

You could improve the low point from the beginning of the game which feels cheap and out of Joel's character by having the game sections in chronological order or moving a few of the flashbacks from the midpoint of the game to the beginning. The rest of it you could fix by having Abby save Joel & Tommy instead of the other way around. I fully believe at some stage of development the game had a more chronological flow as the viewpoint swap even has the remains of a classic tutorial section.

I almost rage quit after killing the first dog. Killing people is one thing... Killing a dog just hurts on a new level. The death scenes with a Machete or Pick Axe is just forcing the character to be a monster. Even the dog crying while the master is dead hurts so much more than the "Ashley! **** They got Ashley!"

The game has other issues like the only characters with growth are the "twist" characters. Also, Jesse & Dina don't have much depth other than they're friends or these characters are in a relationship. They exist to create some mirroring of sides but you never really get that emotional build-up. Dina doesn't even feel like a real person until you see the life Ellie & Dina made together. Worse they tease you early on with a Joel & Ellie style dynamic with Dina then she becomes a quest hub.

Ellie gets the worst end of the treatment she barely even feels like a human being. The only time she seems to have feelings after they reach Seattle is when she's having her mini-break downs or when Ellie & Dina have their family for all of 5 minutes.

The ending takes the mirroring, a moral lesson, and a rephrased bible verse (2 Corinthians 12:10) to an extreme and suffers for it. Really what was the point? Ellie sacrifices everything to go after Abby one last time. Saves her from death by the elements. Then Ellie goes full psychopath and threatens an unconscious Lev. Fights Abby and is on the verge of killing her to just let her go. Coitus Reservatus. She doesn't even get the chance at closure that she hoped to get from killing Abby. She loses her adopted Uncle cause after hearing the story he's going to flip.

All for a highbrow idea that revenge is a cycle and the only way to end it is to stop playing. There was another option. Kill Abby then Kill Lev and mirror what Joel did at the end of TLOU 1 when he killed Marlene.

Or have Abby finish Ellie, Dina, and Tommy in the theater... That would have been a more satisfying story.

Bugs wise... Disappearing UI. Animation bugs that can make bloaters unstoppable. Getting stuck in walls. Audio bugs where enemies just constantly say audio lines over and over. Not horrible but also not what I want from a AAA story-driven game.

Game Play Gripes... If you hide your head behind a skinny tree you're completely hidden and it's made more hilarious by the 3rd person perspective. Also, **** melee kills on dogs. They are brutal and just feel bad.

Controversy... The character that the internet is most bigoted over never even presents as gay or transgender. She's a muscular woman that has the same male love interest the entire game even though there is a cast of openly LGBT characters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You can find better revenge stories in old westerns you can watch for free. This review will probably get taken down do to Naughty Dog and Sony’s extreme tactics against criticism on YouTube and twitter but will see what happens. Played it early by setting my time forward. The story is generic and is extremely trivial and by the 15 hour mark you will be asking “What is the point?” Your characters actions reflect nothing of the emotions state your character is in during the actual plot. You murder 2 people and are crying over it but just 2 minutes ago you ran through a room slitting the throats of a dozen people. That kind of disconnect wasn’t in the first one. In the first game Joel wasn’t proud of what he done but he knew it needed to be done. You start off the game as Ellie but after Joel is killed you switch to Abby following her story of “regret”. Fast forward to an Anti Climatic and easy to call fight Abby beats up Ellie and Dina then goes to kill the pregnant Dina but the kid Abby is with says no then they piss off. Fast forward a year and Ellie still wants revenge and they somehow track Abby to Seattle. Ellie goes to leave and Dina says “If you leave we won’t be here if you return”. Sure enough our protagonist leaves and goes on a quest to kill Abby. What follows is a mind numbing boring quest to get to the end. Once there we face off against Abby only to not kill her. Abby rides away with Levi and when Ellie returns sure enough Dina is gone. Price of Revenge I guess

If you want a good revenge plot I will save you 40 dollars. Go on steam buy Mass Effect 2 with the Price of Revenge And Lair of the Shadow Broker DLCs and there you got two good stories plus a 30 hour game.

We shouldn’t judge this game on Graphics. They are great but it’s why this isn’t a zero. It’s a complete slap in the face to anyone who likes the original.

Then she finds her again and wins the fight but let her live. The end.
This game is bad because everything that happens in the 20+ hours is inconsecuential.
As a character Abbie is never likeable, and you have to play as her half the game.
By the end you just want the game to end and it doesn't matter who kills who.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is nowhere near deserving of anything above a 5. I’ve chosen 3 but would more aptly have chosen 3.5 and this is for 2 reasons:
The game is a technical marvel and Naughty Dog’s artists and engine engineers deserve a lot of credit - the game is stunning, one of the best this generation. The game also includes flashbacks between Joel and Ellie and these really flesh out and build upon the relationship of the two living there life in Jackson. It’s heartwarming and really beautiful and if any characters had anything resembling this level in Part 2, the game would’ve been at least a 7.
    Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
This review is mainly focused on the characters and story, as gameplay remains largely unchanged from the first game. This is subjective but I enjoyed the stealth, the flanking, the survival tactics and the collectibles. I think aiming before shooting grounds the game and gives a sense of realism - these are just poeple trying to survive with guns, not trained soldiers. If you enjoyed the first game’s gameplay or the multiplayer, the gameplay here feels no different.
Essentially, the games major flaw is there is no realism or emotion between any of the characters in this game. The player takes control of Ellie, on a mission looking for Joel, who goes missing. She finds Abby, the daughter of the surgeon Joel kills at the end of Part 1, beating his head in with a golf club. The game then rewinds and now we’re playing as Abby. This is such a gut punch and lurch of coherence and fluidity, and the rest of the story becomes an utter mess of choppiness, flashbacks and jumpcuts that make it really messy and hard to follow. Abby herself is really unlikeable and is hard to sympathize with. All of her allies we meet in the space of 10 minutes and maybe have another 20ish minutes of cutscenes with them in which the player has no time to connect with them, until Ellie murders them. Ellie’s friends suffer a similar fate at the hands of Abby, except Tommy (Joel’s brother) and Dina (Ellie’s girlfriend.
Ellie herself is also extremely unlikeable, having become bitter about Joel not sacrificing her in the first game to create a vaccine (Ellie has the game’s fungus on her brain which turns most people into zombie-like creatures but Ellie has an immune strain that would create a vaccine but she would die having it removed). The issue is, it’s played out like... It’s not even played out like an edgy teenager who’s dad will never understand her. Ellie, 19 or 20, is played like a 12 year old who didn’t get this years new phone. It’s bratty, childish and not at all the independent, strong and witty Ellie we knew from Pt 1. There’s also a strong “we hate all men” vibe from a lot of characters that is strange and uncomfortable.
I would like to make a small mention of Dina though, she’s the only other character apart from Ellie and Abby that is somewhat memorable. Her and Ellie’s interactions are usually very cute and touching and go someway to humanizing them both. I ESPECIALLY enjoyed the farmhouse scene, where, after a battle with Abby, the game cuts (as it usually does) a few months ahead and Ellie and Dina are living in an abandoned farmhouse that they’ve repaired and they are living with Dina’s baby son and rearing animals. It’s possibly the best scene and area in the game. It all comes crashing down when Tommy comes around, tells Ellie he knows where Abby is, Dina quite rightly says to Ellie not to go or she and the baby will leave but Ellie goes anyway, which is really stupid and none-sensical. Had the game ended on the farmhouse it would’ve been leagues better.
So Ellie finds Abby, who had been kidnapped and beaten almost to death and then crucified by some slavers and Ellie cuts her free. They then head to a nearby dock to escape by boat. Before they can, Ellie sees Lev, a young boy Abby had been travelling with, laying in the boat and Ellie threatens to kill him unless they fight. With their fists. In a survival of the fittest, underhand tactics, we have guns world. It then becomes a quick time event, where Ellie gets the upperhand, has a PTSD flashback of Joel, lets Abby leave and walks away. Cut to the farmhouse, Dina and the baby are gone, Ellie picks up a guitar and tries to play but can’t because she lost some fingers in the Abby fight, cut to flashback of Ellie teling Joel he should’ve let her die in the hospital, cut back to Ellie walking away from the farmhouse, ends.
Let’s all hope TLOU3 is never made or if it is with Druckmann and the current management who made ND work 100’s of hours far FAR away. Until then, ND staff at the bottom, get out and never look back.

    Pro:
The game itself looks nice, really nice
The voice acting is good, and the facial works are also pretty good.
Menu and settings are petty nice, is very much need with the difficult setting

    Cons:
AI is damn awful, to the point, there are games from 2012 would be superior.
The Story is really weak compared to the first game and other AAA, it feels like the story group forgot about storytelling and a lot of plotholes.
Controls are still pretty bad, the jump button is 95% useless, and was far to hyped up.
    Puzzles are not there really.
    Awkward sex screen
The biggest problem I have is centered on the character Abby, not the fact that she kills Joel, but that could have been done better, but more you have to play as her. and that Ellie saves her "twice" To were most people would have killed her. It feels soulless, and Really wished I had refunded the game back when the leaks came out.

TL:DR - The Last of Us 2 soars high with absolute beautiful fidelity while simultaneously falling far from grace with poor story writing and structure and coupled with dated gameplay mechanics.

Graphics: TLOU's greatest strength is its visuals. Stunning, vibrant detail can be seen through most of the game, only lacking occasionally on a few character models and background foliage. It is almost impossible not to get lost in a gaze with every cutscene. The environment does an excellent job capturing the feel of an apocalyptic world.

Story: Unfortunately for TLOU2, it doesn't even hold a candle to its predecessor. Where the TLOU1 was focused on a powerful, well driven story about the zombie apocalypse, TLOU2 steers clear of that in favor of a forced revenge plot. Character development is strong in some places while completely failing to address it in others. The story itself bounces constantly between uninteresting characters and different points in time, creating a jarring, predictable, and disappointing storytelling experience.

Gameplay: TLOU2 doesn't stray too far from the TLOU formula. Though some additions were made, everything about the game feels comfortably familiar, yet boring in most cases.

Audio: Another aspect that seems to be equally comparable to the first in the series. Sound effects do their job, but don't bring anything to the table as far as robust or immersive.

    Final Score: 3/10

Sidenote: There is absolutely nothing in my review in regards to the controversy. This is as unbiased a review as it can get. Astounding graphics and a brand name from a company are not enough to carry a game to success. The original The Last of Us was predominantly successful due to its phenomenal story, which is completely mismanaged here. One could argue that a game does not need a good story, but then all you're left with is generic and obsolete gameplay that cannot hold this world up.

Their is little to no character agency and you are pretty much forced to play out the story prescribed even though there is opportunity for temporary deviations. The story has to be my biggest bugbear. It's clearly agenda driven, wokerati, virtue-signalling nonsense throughout. The moralisation is heavy handed and forced throughout. Suffice to say that if you are just a normal gamer this may be very off-putting. Also, the incredible brutality and violence throughout seems to serve no purpose. There's no glory, no funny moments, it's just downbeat and depressing. I can't understand how this can be so different from the first game which was heart warming and fun to play. What a terrible waste of 6-7 years of development. I wish they would leave their politics at the door with these games. Expand

Mr. Druckmann has put so much effort into drama and trying to be original that he ended up with an unoriginal, illogical script that people justifiably hate. In other words, a genius outplayed himself and forgot what made the first game great in the first place. As a result, there is never going to be part 2 for the majority of fans. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At first I didn't know if people were trying hard to give bad scores to the game (I was still waiting for my copy to be shipped) so I wasn't sure what to think about all of this.

I started playing few days ago (done now) and while the game has some good points (graphics, level design etc.) the most important part (the story) is all messed up. Last of Us's key element is its story and I don't know what they were thinking. I understand they all live in an apocalyptic world, which means some people will eventually do bad things to survive, but many points do not make sense at all. Let's break it down :

They kill Joel in the first 2 hours of the game. It's something that could actually make sense, but the way they did it, it doesn't. Why ? First, they kill him WAY too fast and by some random character we don't even know about. Then, it's the way they kill him that doesn't make sense too. Joel has more experience and trusting such a group at the beginning of the game just to get killed few minutes later makes no sense too. He had to be on guard, eventually wait outside, call for help or whatever. But to join a random group just to get killed? Yeah... excuse me but that's a very bad way to handle it.

Now let's talk about Abby, the newly introduced character. When she's about to kill him, Joel doesn't seem to recognize her or anything and from our player's standing point, it's just confusing. Joel's reaction : ok, let's do this quick, just finish me. WTF ? Come on man, fight for your life, try to understand what's going on at least. Joel looked so weak, damn.

If Joel died trying to save Ellie or a natural death (even a bite), I wouldn't mind that much (even if I loved that character), but to kill him like that? Nope... I can't accept that.

And if you think about it, Abby killing him has no meaning and for one more reason : if Joel had to get killed by all the father's daughters he eventually killed in the previous game, there'd be an army hunting him down. So why Abby? She barely has anything special, it's a random character we never heard of, anybody else that got killed could have an angry son/daughter to go after Joel. I'm so disappointed by this non sense that I'm losing my word, so I'll skip to the next part : Ellie's choice.

So during the game, you basically destroy innocent people that never touched Joel, you kill hundred's of enemies and in the end, Ellie's like : you killed Joel? Nah it's okay, let's move on, happy ending for you Abby!

As mentioned, we kill hundreds of enemies just to let her go... Who the hell decided this? Oh and I forgot to mention, I bought the collector's edition and Neil Druckman had a letter for us saying something like : "how far you would go for revenge?".

Okay, how far would I go? It goes both side. How far Abby would go (she decided to kill Joel) and then comes Ellie's turn. As a player, why you NEVER gave me the choice to DECIDE BY MYSELF? You ask us how far we'd go just to decide for ourselves without giving us any options. Do not ask uf what we would do if we're condamned to follow Ellie's bad choice to let Abby survive. It was your decision as a game creator to not to as far as revenge, so why bother ask us? If our decision doesn't interest you, just don't ask, ffs.

I can't give a 0 to the game because some things are actually good, but as I've already said, the narrative part of the game (the most important one) has been ruined. If TLOU was my grave, Neil Druckman just spitted on it.

I'll give one point for the graphics, one for the music, one for the gameplay.

And please, I beg Naughty dog, if there's a 3rd part, don't let that man work on it unless you want to release another bad story.

From now on, I'm just going to forget about this game and will consider that everything's over at TLOU's ending.

I did not want to hold the controller to move the main character towards the end. Such a bizarre experience not wanting to pick up the controller or click buttons to progress the story because I wanted nothing to do with this person who only caused pain and suffering for herself and those around her. Near the end I seriously considered not progressing past a certain point in one of the scenes where I did not want to do what the game was forcing me to do. Would love to have been in the meeting room when the creatives were coming up with this story. Clearly they wanted to do something different, to push some boundaries, but they chose to go in a way that for me was just very distasteful. How did they ever get to a point of thinking "Yep, this story is going to work". A "memorable" experience, but all for the wrong reasons and not one I needed. Expand

Let's start with the good things: I actually kinda liked the stealth kinda gameplay and the fights. The graphics were absolutely astonishing, it was visually just stunning. The few Joel & Ellie parts were so sweet & wholesome and it got me very invested. Absolutely loved that.
    SPOILER ALERT:
But now it begins. I mostly play a game for the good STORY. And this game had a very bad way of storytelling. First it kills off Joel in an absolute disrespectful way with a guy spitting on his dead corpse. Than you go on a revenge quest killing everyone in your way be it a kid, a dog or pregnant ladies. And than you switch to play Abby.... Nobody wanted to play as the killer of Joel. Please do it before the Tiger Woods scene to know her background better. To empathize for her more beforehand. During the end it would have been nice to choose your outcome, but she killed everyone but the target. The reaction to certain situations also didn't really make sense to me. Everything just felt really pointless and left you tired. You do not care anymore.

Unfortunately all the side characters were really bland with political propaganda forced onto them,.
And if you like a side character somewhat, they will die an unnecessary death.

Luckily I didn't spend money on this, but could borrow it from a friend. But I would not recommend spending money on it.

I can't imagine waiting 8 years for this game and than getting spit on by Neil Druckmann to his own fans. Absolute disappointment.

Gameplay: The gameplay of TLOU2 is serviceable. If you marathon both titles together, one will have a feeling of familiarity when jumping from one to the next, though I would argue that, much like Konami's Metal Gear Solid series experienced, any future titles should have a revamped control scheme developed to meet the demands of growth and development.

Story: Story..... oh the story.... This will be THE most divisive story ever developed for the PS4. And players will be divided into 3 camps:

    1) You think characters are disposable for plot purposes so you've limited your attachment to limit any emotional blow when they die or get injured.

    2) You've been with the franchise since the games debut on the PS3, feel a connection with them, and will (rightly) be outraged when they meet their untimely end, get hurt, or endure bodily harm for the sake of being a plot device.

    3) Feel indifferent because it's just a game title and you have little to no emotional investment in the game's universe.

I won't go into plot spoilers themselves. Reason being there's enough ranting about that. However, I will question the motivation behind the development of this game. It's come to light that Naughty Dog intentionally substituted characters into game demos shown to the press for the expressed purpose of misleading them, so they would go back and report it, then we could switch out said characters to conceal divisive plot points. The city of Seattle was intentionally selected so they would have justification for their inclusion of LBGT+ paraphernalia (To be clear, I have NOTHING against the LBGT community. This is about intent, not inclusion or the removal of said inclusion).

Not to mention every gaming journalist that received a review code was contract bound to ONLY talk about the Ellie chapter (hint) and was ONLY allowed to use media captures from 3 (THREE) specific sections of her chapter (which was also taken as misleading).

And finally, the dark, brutal narrative that's given for the sake of plot convenience makes little sense and subjects the player to extended, almost torture pornish levels of "shock value" in a misguided effort to make you "hate" characters. I found it difficult to sympathize with most everything happening. It was like the Neil Druckmann was trying SO hard to be M. Night Shyamalan and include as many twists as he could but in the process out thought himself. And for what? Alienating 2/3 of your fanbase?

What got me the most was a troubling scene that literally so graphic, so gory, so vicious, I physically got ill. It made me want to puke. And I enjoy horror, just not graphic gore of characters I'm supposed to sympathize with.

tl;dr conclusion: We live in an age where games are streamed and playthroughs are uploaded to various sites: YouTube, Twitch, etc. If you're unsure and came here looking for something to sell you on this game, watch a playthrough. Just the first few hours. If it engages you, then you'll have your answer. If you're repulsed by what you see, there's your answer. But make this decision for yourself. There's a reason why the Critic Scores differ significantly from the user score. Hopefully this review helps you gain perspective on that.

I couldn't care less about the politics they are trying to attach to this part of the game...in the graphics department it was awesome, good mechanics...but the story was lacking a lot. Expand

You embed propaganda in an art piece to join the moral superiority club. Plot may lose focus and users may feel manipulated, but whatever, critic loves it and you are acknowledged as a brave and genuine writer. Great job.
    .
We don´t have to pay $60 to criticize that. But then again, users happen to be the last of us.

An insult to fans, and proof of corruption in mainstream games media. The game is beautiful looking, but it is a trainwreck held back by idiotic writing that's insulting to the viewer's intelligence. On top of that the creators' victim complex over the bad reviews, led to many people being attacked for simply disliking the game.

TLOU2 is a disgusting creation that deserves to be forgotten.

My advice to anyone who didn’t bought this game yet, for god’s sake save your money on a better game. Expand

This game is a nihilistic, extremely badly written and joyless piece of gargabe, and a disgrace to the original The Last of Us. Avoid it. The only reason I do not give it 0 point is because I want to get some credits to the artists, gameplay programmers, level designers, etc.

I really wasn't a massive fan of the first game, but it was a rewarding experience, it was balanced, there's no balance here, it's just all dark ... no joy whatsoever. Some games and movies SHOULD NOT have sequels and TLOUS is a living proof.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
