It's obvious there was a narrative that Neil Druckmann wanted to tell about revenge and violence being bad that he insisted we needed for the millionth time. He clearly didn't care about arriving to any events organically and the story is then as subtle as a Nicolas Cage performance. Expand

So, the game makes you feel bad in the first 2 hours, it makes you wanna put it down, but as you keep and getting to know the reasons why the characters do what they do, you start to empathise with them, it's just so human, and so well made, the voice acting is top, animations are top, graphics are top, gameplay is crazy good, is terrifying, is heart breaking, its just so sad but at the same time so good. I wish that you by reading this, even if you hate the game, try and give it a chance and give it a couple of days to thing about everything that happened.. While the game attempts to amaze you with it's beautiful graphics, the gameplay remains unevolved from the original. However the story, the main driving force behind this game is incredibly flawed and has thrown out the quality that the prequel had established. Original characters were handled in a disrespectful manner, and had their personalities altered to fit a narrative the developer tried to pursue and failed. The game is absolutely NOT fun. I recommend that you instead play the Last of Us Remastered and forget this game.

The mainstream critics are so detached for reality it is not even funny. If you hate the game you are slandered as a hateful bigot and anytype of "phobe" or "ist". The actions that ND, Sony, and the critics have done will be felt in the industry for years.

Don't worry, we the gaming community will remember and we will not forget.

Lets play nearly 10 hours as a new main character that murders the characters you actually care about. But don't worry, we'll fill those 10 hours with awful character development from about 10 other new side characters in an attempt to make you sympathize with her.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 1 had a great story and I was super excited to play Part 2. This excitement turns out to be almost for nothing. The story is not at all what I was expecting, and has so many flaws and problems that it almost ruins the game.

Now for the good. The visuals are outstanding. There is so much detail in the game that it looks like next-gen graphics. Also, the gameplay is very smooth and is almost cinematic-like which really brings the player into the game. I would like to see some different animations (especially when executing zombies) but that is almost nitpicking. Overall the artists did a great job and pretty much carried the game.

Now for the bad (Spoiler alert)

Killing Joel that soon into the game makes zero sense. Now saying that sure Joel probably should die at some point however after saving Abby it would be hard I think for a rational person to beat someone's head in after they saved your life, and brought you back to your group. I feel like it would have made sense if they made maybe another game before this one which the story was exclusively about Abby up to the point in which Joel killed her father. That way we have a direct motive. I feel that them trying to justify Abbys actions by explaining why she did it was useless especially when we had an entire game dedicated to Joel and Ellie the two characters that the fans fell in love with. This major flaw kind of spurred the rest of the game to just seem erratic and depressing (kind of like GOT season 8) .

The reason why I gave the game such a low rating is because if I am reading the book. The book itself the binding, the pages, the ink, the cover, the artwork could be perfect. However, if the story in that book is bad it does not matter how good those other things are I am going to stop reading it. That is the best way I can describe why I rated this game so low.

I hope that they decide that this game is not canon to the actual story because I would love to see a part 3. However, if they decide to keep this story as canon I'd rather not. Even if they decided to go back in time when Jole and Ellie were still together I think that it's too late now to do that since in the future the story just falls apart and the game makes no sense.

Naughty Dog had a license to print money with part 1 and just tore it up in part 2.

Overall the story tanked this game.

To the people that have finished the game, the most powerful object/symbol in the story was the guitar and I always think of Joel when Ellie holds and plays it. Her singing Take on me was surreal
as the lyrics fit perfectly in Ellie's situation.
The thing that hit me deep was Ellie walking away from that guitar.. the last thing that reminded her of Joel. The memory of Joel is what kept her on the path of revenge, which lead to more pain and loss. She finally came to terms with it and leaves Joel behind. It was such a sad moment but beautifully done.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a failure of a sequel to the first game. The story is boring and uninspired, the gameplay is almost identical (which I guess is good if you are happy with the same gameplay over again), the characters are unlikeable and never learn anything, the ending is super unsatisfying and nonsensical, the game is full of weird and bad writing, the entire game is specifically formulated to make you feel miserable (which is NOT a rumour, it was officially confirmed by a lot of people who have worked on the game). If you take the game on it's own, it feels like an semi-Indie game with AAA game graphics. The developers are constantly blaming completely false things for the bad reviews, saying "oh, bots are review-brigading the game, it's not real people", or "they only dislike it because Ellie is g@y". Okay, lemme tell you why both of these claims are false. Technically, yes, there are definitely bots AND people review-brigading the game, but lemme tell you something. There are an equal amount of people review-brigading the game to give it a 10/10. There are an equal amount of review-brigadiers on the 10/10 reviews as there are on the 0/10 reviews. The second statement is so dumb that it makes me laugh. The Last Of Us: Left Behind (the DLC for the first game) was very, VERY heavy on Ellie being g@y, and that was rated incredibly high, so that argument is kaput. People hate TLOU2 because it spits on the first game and it's legacy, it is written badly, it isn't original, it isn't new, and it isn't good unless you're purely looking at graphics. I would say if you love TLOU, don't buy this, if you really, REALLY want it, wait for a sale, see if you can score it for super cheap off someone else, or borrow a copy from a friend. Absolutely shameful, Naughty Dog. You've spit on TLOU, it's characters, and the legacy it created. Expand

This game demonstrates what happens when a feminist and a SJW take on important positions in the entertainment zone, it doesn't even seem like the game is a continuation but rather personal opinions that have been turned into a game, the game makes you feel angry and then you feel nothing due to its history and trajectory, which has several and several holes, the mechanics and more of the same with graphic additions and graphic violence have been improved, but TLOU's strong point is its story that in my opinion died and was buried with Joel. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The controversy surrounding this game is minuscule to the engrossing story. This has developed into one of those games that truly shocks the player and exemplifies the grotesque nature of revenge. Nothing can truly prepare you, that is unless you played the first game. I am very partial to Ellie and Joel's relationship but in the game's opening act sets up the premise of the game until the very end of it.

The story has always been the series biggest strengths and we get to see it clearly in display here. Naughtydog's finest. Although timeline skipping and dancing back and forth are not my favorite ways of storytelling it does have it significance in the stories of both the main characters and their motivations.

I can't say that in this game world society's biggest enemy would be the fungus or the infected but the cruelty of desperate people trying to survive. It is on a damn pedestal here so big that you see it in the cover art of Ellie's anguish face.

The game controversial Lesbian romance and the Tran-sexual character is not that distracting from the story. I myself wasn't even a fan of it but it didn't deter me from completing the game.

The horror elements were topknotch and the music was very riveting. The new infected were really scary and that area in the hospital with Abby was truly something out of hell itself. The fights stealthiness through human patrols and settlements was on the edge of your seat. Extremely satisfying was taking out enemies in stealth while snaking your way onward.

So while people are upset that one of the MC does die or being upset about the LGBTQ characters spread sporadically in with the story don't let them distract you from a powerful tale of revenge in a woeful world pitted against the remaining survivors. You can't please everyone but at least the game has done well enough in its own right.

And be mindful of people who review the game on launch day. They didn't finish it and are just going off of hearsay downplaying on bias alone. I just finished it today at a sensible speed and appreciate the game for what it is. Lots of hate for something they clearly do not understand nor were they prepared for.

However this kind of game suffer from a gameplay that can become a chore, because the story is the most important reason you play, you just want to know what follows. This is when the game stumble to a pit of mediocre story telling and a plot that happens because the plot need to happens and is the plot that carry the story not the characters, on the topic of the characters, the story disrespects the characters from the first game on an attempt to create shock and subvert expectations. The game tries to give morality to an immoral with an at best an inconsistent values and at worst a forced narrative.

It is plausible to make a cruel narrative with moral gray areas and be masterpieces like Schindler's List or Saving private Ryan. This game lack what makes those movies not fun, but a great piece of art.

In conclusion, repetitive gameplay, beautiful graphics and VA, but a story that is so poor that it belongs to fanfiction with no real character development apart from a screaming inconsistent and biased message.

Pity. This game has literally everything going for it, good audio, good visuals, decent gameplay, and it is all ruined because the writers thought they were being edgy but instead wasted time on stories and characters you couldn't possibly like.

La historia me pareció muy mal hecha, más al inicio del juego, la forma en la que ocurren ciertos hechos está muy forzada y el final me dejó molesto.

The game play is solid evening without a lot of changes from the first game, still it outstays its welcome with pointless sections on the game; a lot of unnecessary padding. This extends the game past what is needed by a far margin probably as a poor set up for a sequel. The pacing is off throughout the game, with weird scene jumps and the length between story points. This is made worse with plot holes, and dues ex mechina to make the story string along from one scene to the next. This is exaggerated further with flip flop characters, and a lack of foreshadow plot points. Example, I see people stating is Joel may have changed. This is bad writing through because there is no display, foreshadow, or dialogue to show that change. This is a fair game, yet diminishes the first game leaving a poor legacy on the franchise. Expand

All the new characters were boring and I couldn’t care less about any of them. All the female characters look like **** purposely created to be unattractive. The gameplay barely improved and you’re forced to fight more which is one of the weakest parts of the game as I play largely for the story. Unfortunately, the story is terribly written here as well. It’s basically someone’s angry fan fic. Let’s destroy everything we love from the first game and leave you with no feelings of satisfaction, that’s what gamers want! The game offers a very wide options for approach for every combat which is amazing and an improvement in contrast to the first game. The graphics are breathtaking and the best of PS4, which I can guarantee wont be topped, the mocap, the details in the models, it's incredible. The game delivers a tense and dangerous atmosphere. But the big problem is that the story has a lot of weaks points and some characters arcs dont make sense at all. The game forces the player to empathize with Abby with very forced scenes snd moments to no avail. And the conclusion is unsatisfactory and a complete mess in both mecanics and plot. In a story-heavy oriented game like this, it is unforgivable. Expand

The game tries to MANIPULATE you all the time into thinking about the other side of the matter, into make you believe that there is no good and evil. It makes a tremendous effort to compare a brutal and slow murder of and unnarmed and defenseless man to the kill of a man armed with a scalpel that was trying to kill a little girl.

This game is a huge disappointment the first story was about endure and survive the second one I admit the graphics were great the soundtrack was amazing, but terrible story writing Naught Dog did whatever they can to make us hate Joel and Ellie, what Joel was going around killing innocent people, the people feel sorry for Abby, gave Abby better weapons, choke out people, better boss fights, better shooting games, nice to animals, as for Ellie they made her kill pregnant woman, dogs, she was just out of character, I can't believe what ND did to the characters we love and to introduce a new playable character we are forced to play, they did whatever they could to make people like Abby and hate Joel, I have never be so angry over a game, I waited 7 years for this? I hated playing this game it is complete trash never playing it again. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finished the game in about 30 hours and overall I enjoyed it, but I can also understand the criticism the game is receiving from a large group of gamers, and even agree with some points. So here it goes:

    - Is this game better than the first one? No, it is not, this game lacks some key elements of the first one, like the journey across multiple cities or the "us against the world" feeling so present in TLOU.

    - Is this the game a masterpiece? Graphically speaking, yes it is, it looks amazing. The performance of the voice actor and actresses is top notch and very convincing, really a 10 out of 10. But it's not perfect enough to be called a masterpiece. There's too much repetition combat wise, for example.

    - Is the story good? That's a tough one, yes and no, but the only way I found to answer that is by saying: its a good story for this game alone, but as a story worthy of a sequel to the first game? No. Like I said before, it's not the same feeling as it lacks key elements of the first game.

    - Is there wokeness in the game? Yes, and I most definitely don't like politics and social activism in games, because it tends to ruin them, but it's not a big issue in TLOU2. It didn't bother me in this case.

    - Was Joel's death really necessary to the sequel? Not in my opinion, there was other possibilities, it did work for the story, but still didn't like this creative choice from Naughty Dog. This was very disappointing.

Well, I do think people should play this game, but I would wait for some PSN sale in the future.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us part 2... A game which answers allot of questions that I had from the first. This game also raises many, but this is why I like it. I went into this game without seeing any reviews, because I didn't want my own view to be hindered by others which i find tends to infect peoples minds which has happened with previous games or films due to their popularity or unpopularity. Lets start with the gameplay, Truly out of all game experiences I had with single player games, I have never played a game with so few bugs. The only 2 bugs I saw in my entire run through were gaps in textures during the Tommy section with Abby. I give the gameplay experience a 10/10, however the gameplay is not all the last of us brings. It brings a story of anger and to be fair, I don't think story wise, this game is as good as the first. However you would be deluded to think the gameplay hasn't had some vast improvement. The world is stunning and really brings an atmosphere with really fluid gameplay mechanics which have improved even more from the first game. I honestly couldn't write enough about how good the gameplay and graphics are in this game, because it is truly a standard all games should aim for.

Now onto the story, honestly I don't understand all the hate with the story, I find the brave writing refreshing because there is too much fan service nowadays than what the writer wants. I believe a truly good story is one that the writer believes is right for the story. I agree that there are some coincidences to benefit movement of the story, however these are not story breaking. The argument that Joel's sending off was cheap is delusional. People forget that this is last of us part 2, not last of us 2. Completely disregarding the first game as character development and saying his outing was cheap is crazy to me. The whole scenario that happened to getting Joel killed is clearly an attempt by the writer to get the player angry, and I know this was a strong focus by the writer, because he is constantly trying to make you lose your temper with the story. People need to understand that just because you're angry with the writing, doesn't make it bad writing. As far as plot holes go, I personally did not spot any, and the people that have said there are, I haven't seen a clear one. If the only plot hole is Ellie killed 100s of people to not get revenge, is completely stupid. I guess the player doesn't want any action, I guess we want a post-apocalyptic tour simulator. Let's not forget you can technically go through allot of the game with killing very few people anyway. The most interesting part with the story was the attempt by the writer to make us feel sorry for Abby after already setting the player with a bias relationship with Ellie. It really gives you a reality check to think even when a characters actions are justified are still treated as the villain is truly worrying when you think about human psychology. The ending was similar to the first with more of a realism take however this time was unsatisfying to the player. This was not done purposefully by the writer but is on of the reasonable outcomes. I truly think the ending I think every player was hoping for would have truly been sad. A tragic story with a tragic end, however I think the one that was chosen was just fine.

I'm running out of space so I will end with this. The game is not a masterpiece, nor is it that unique, however to say it is a bad game is completely delusional. A must play and is still a game of the year contender in my book. The hate is mainly generated by the writer doing what he wants and not what the player wants. It's a story about realism, just like the first. But it seems the fan base only like it went the realism turns in their favor. Thanks for the experience naughty dog, and thanks for reading.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played the game on hard difficulty and this is what I thought. I am going to formulate this review with the good, the bad, and ugly and try to reveal all my true thought about the game.

    The Good
    - I liked Jesse and Manny as characters. They were both so kind and caring towards their friends and so wholesome I really thought I could relate to them. I was so sad watching both of them die because they were great comedic relief and supporting Characters.
    - The gameplay and the visuals are top notch. It is so satisfying to kill people and look at this world that if there was no story I would easily play this game 30 times over
    - I really enjoyed playing as Ellie more to Abby because I liked her more as a character and I enjoyed not being the strongest character physically but definitely emotionally. Also I loved how she used a switchblade it made everything more brutal and satisfying
    - The exploration in this game is good I am glad they opened the world a little more than the first one because I will admit the first game felt very linear for long times.
    - New puzzles were a nice touch as every fight with Ellie felt like a puzzle because you just were not that strong. Unlike Abby were you literally could just sadistically kill everyone with your fists.
    - The Flashbacks are amazing for both characters. Especially with Joel, because it gives us a more in depth look at his character during the past four years
    - The parallel between Owen and Abby, and Dina and Ellie is a nice touch. As Dina and Owen both try their hardest to help them forget about vengeance and just move on but neither one of them succeed.

    The Bad
    - Playing as Abby is very hard after you watch her brutally kill Joel our hero from the first game. She is also boring at times because she seems to show almost no emotion to anybody except for Lev and Yara, but even then it's hard to tell because she does not show it on her face. She only shows through her actions and that is almost always killing someone even her one people. I got very bored of it by Seattle Day 2, the only redeeming quality was the combat as it is fun at times. Also that hospital scene versus the giant monster is amazing and so freaking cool.
    - Mel is a very boring and flat character in my opinion. The only reason i care about her is because she is killed by Ellie and she is pregnant. It is very hard to watch and it really makes Ellie think "what if that was Dina." But besides that Mel is nothing really except just stupid for getting herself involved in this mess. She should have stayed home and just had the baby in my opinion.

    The Ugly
    - Joel's Death is hard to watch and it happens way to early in the game in my opinion. However, I get why they did it in the way they did. Watching it happen really wants to makes you want to just destroy Abby and make sure she dies the most brutal death possible. But sadly this revenge story is ruined by the fact that i have to play 10 hours as Abby and try to sympathize with her as a character.
-The ending. Oh where do I start with this because there is not even an ending in my opinion. What I loved about the first game is that it had a great ending and a sequel was not even necessary to make that story make sense. But after this I am leaving with more questions than answers and I wish that the game had cut the Abby play through except for the flashbacks and really try to flesh out a satisfying ending. Let me be clear after that had happened I did not want either character to die. Mainly because they just both need to move on and let it go to have closure. If one of them had died there would heave never have been closure and the other would still be struggling. I think it could have been done better though.
    - Where the hell is Dina!! At the end of the game Ellie goes back to the farm only to find everyone gone and no Dina. I just personally do not like this part of the ending as I do not see Dina giving up on her that quick after this story

    Final Verdict
The Last of Us part 2 is one hell of a game. It is definitely very unique, brutal, emotional, and above all dark. It is very hard to finish and play for a multitude of reasons. All in all I will give it a 7 because I enjoyed playing it and characters like Jesse and Manny made me smile many times throughout my playthrough. But the story was average and disappointing. Druckmann is an insane and very ambitious writer. I understand why he wrote the game this way but I do not agree with it. However, I still respect him as a writer and i truly believe he is still one of the best entertainment writers on the planet. The Last of us is an 11/10 in my opinion this game falls short as a sequel but I cannot say I did not enjoy playing. I just wish some parts were different and were not as long as they were. In the end, the last of us part 2 is a very controversial game to say the least and I will never forget playing it.

Playing as the main character Ellie on a revenge mission was a little cliche but worked well. The problem however was naughty dog brought in a new character with no real background and this wasn’t explained too well similar to a lot of new characters in the sequel. No background and no real attachment to these new characters showed how focused the company have been on different elements. My big problem with this game was the idea of playing with a character who Ellie is trying to gain revenge on. This character is detestable after her acts early in the game and for whatever reason we have to play roughly 10 hours with this character with naughty dog trying to force it down our throats this character isn’t too bad really. That unfortunately was not going to work which made the story quite bad unfortunately. The parts as Ellie were perfect and fine if the game followed along that path then the story would have been fine. An 8 out of 10 seems fair all things considered. Expand

7 years, I waited for this dumpster fire of a game. The story is complete nonsense, filled with plot holes and choices that certain chagracters would’ve never made. And for being a story about revenge, it doesn’t even manage to reach a satisfying ending. Complete garbage front to back.

After completing this I can say it is complete and utter **** A horrible sequel. Don't buy this. The story is all over the place and a complete and utter mess. The ending is extremely terrible and unsatisfactory. I felt worse after playing the game than I did before and felt like I wasted £60.00. Please, if you love the last of us part 1 like I do, do not buy part 2, please don't. SaveAfter completing this I can say it is complete and utter **** A horrible sequel. Don't buy this. The Last of Us Part II one of the most masterfully crafted games of this generation. Everything from the graphics, to the sound design, to the character animations to the voice acting is top tier. The gameplay improves upon its predecessor in almost every way—environments are richer, enemies are smarter, combat and traversal are much more fluid.

Everything from the graphics, to the sound design, to the character animations to the voice acting is top tier. The gameplay improves upon its predecessor in almost every way—environments are richer, enemies are smarter, combat and traversal are much more fluid.

The most polarizing aspect of this game is obviously the story. In short, The Last Of Us Part II is not interested in fan service, period. Naughty Dog took a big risk with this story in that they decided to stay true to the bleak brutality of the post-apocalyptic world, creating nuanced, morally ambiguous characters. Not everyone gets a happy ending. Actually, no one really gets a happy ending. But what else can be expected in a world ravaged by disease and violence? Without a doubt, The Last of Us Part II offers one of the most thought-provoking stories ever told in a video game.

The truth is, just because people are upset over a major character dying, doesn't make this an objectively bad story. It's actually the opposite—the fact that people are so angry means the game did its job. We're supposed to feel angry, and depressed, and disgusted, and hopeless, and disappointed. The biggest strength of this game is its ability to make players FEEL. That alone makes it one of the most impressive pieces of storytelling —in ANY medium— in years.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
