This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly i got into the game thinking it's complete garbage and what i saw was astounding. I was actually amazed by the detail of the game. When i actually went deeper to see why the game is hated, like 50% of them are because Eliie is gay? Seriously? Like are humans that abysmally pathetic now? Our race is homophobic against a video game character? 2nd thing was false marketing, which i have to agree on, was pretty bad on their part. But false marketing doesn't make the game bad, it makes the developers bad. I noticed that half the people didn't even play the game, like literally, some comments were "the controls are hard", "the story is monotone", "the characters are dumb" and then the same people go on saying how Doom Eternal was the most original game ever (no offense, like the game, but that's just false). All and all Joel's death was explained and it has a legitimate reason, he isn't killed just because. The story is nowhere near bad written imo. The characters are pretty iconic and i definitely don't mind Ellie being gay, i actually understand it in an apocalyptic world. You really can't pick whatever you want, so you are more welcome to experiencing new stuff. right? Expand

I’ve basically dropped everything else to play this game over the past few days - and with 30+ hours in, I JUST beat it - so it’s fair to say that out of the 75,000+ reviews, most of them probably haven’t completed the game.

Last of Us 2 is a masterpiece... rating this 1/10 because you were in grief about what happened at the very beginning is a sign of emotional immaturity. I felt sad

I felt sad too, but as the major storyline throughout both games has been about redemption & forgiveness, it feels fitting. Incredible game.

I finished the game 3 days ago and earned the platinum trophy too just yesterday, it took me some time to process the game and the ending, and in my opinion there couldnt have been a better ending.. and yes one thing i was pissed about was Joels death, its not that ppl are enraged that u killed joel, they are upset because of the way they killed Joel. Ppl should realise that the game revolves around hatred and revenge, and both ellie and abbys story run parallel, at one hand ellie is furious and enraged wanting to get revenge crossing every obstacle in her way and at the other hand Abby is struggling after the stuff that went through, point is NO ONE IS THE GOOD GUY HERE, its the hate and coping with losing a loved one, the ending also in my opinion couldn't be better because if ellie would have killed abby, im sure she wont feel satisfied considering that she saw abby taking care of Lev, plus Abby has lost enough, all her friends family, she wasnt in the WLF anymore and all that, Sure ellie killed all the friends and did violent **** but that was in s fit of rage and anger, thats what naughty dog forced us to do to feel the anger, in the end Ellie was the bigger person cuz she didnt kill abby, in conclusion id giv this game a 9/10, notice how i only talked about story here yeh because if i start talking about the gameplay ill be here all day, the gameplay was **** sick and fun as **** Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think The Last Of Us: Part II is even better than the previous one, don't get me wrong, the previous one was a masterpiece, but it doesn't reflect the sincerity of the world, since they give us to know that Joel and Ellie are like others, THEY ARE PEOPLE, they are not heroes. They show us that just like we kill people they also kill, and they also have loved ones. It seems to me that as Ellie develops in this installment it is fantasticshow us an Ellie who falls in love and goes through different situations, either like the death of her peers/relatives until she realizes that the best way to pay homage to shes friend is being better than him. It lets us know that sooner or later things are over, whether it's like our loved ones or as some feeling. Also I don't want people to take it the wrong way, this is my point of view, obviously there's always going to be people who don't like the game or who just don't support it .But it seems to me that The Last Of Us: Part II, is and will be a complete past and jewel of play. Thank you NaughtyDog for offering me this game, for giving me this expirience, just Thank You! And congratulations on your big game Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very disappointing. ND took most everything that was great about part 1 and destroyed it. Audio, graphics and gameplay were top notch, but the storytelling and pacing destroyed what could have been a masterpiece. I wanted to stay spoiler free because I have been waiting to play this game for so many years and I wanted another incredible experience but I wish i would have just looked at the spoilers and saved my money. What broke the game wasn't the emphasis on strong female characters or the attention payed to the trans/gay side of the characters. In fact NDs storytelling seems to have just used Ellie/Dina/Lev as lazy inserts to appear "woke" and didn't flesh out any of these characters to their full potential. What destroyed the game in my opinion was how the handled Killing Joel. It's okay for a main character to be killed off, but when you slow torture one of the most beloved characters in recent videogame history right at the beginning of the game and then expect the player to empathize with the killer...well, the fans reaction speaks for itself. Such a shame that the writers had to ruin this game for the fans and everyone else who worked on it. Expand

Don't get me wrong the game play is super fun just like the first last of us nothing has really changed. It's a shame that the beautiful moments in the game are going to be overlooked with the bad such as the museum scene. The biggest issue i have with this game is how they portrayed it in trailers making it seem like it was going to be another adventure with Joel and Ellie. If you want to learn more about that there's a article by James Lara on Sp1st its shows comparison pictures and videos of the trailer vs the actual game play. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've got the platinum trophey so I think I'm qualified to write some comments. To be honest it’s okay that Joel died in the story, I believe most of the players have psychological preparation, but die like this?
The awful story just ruined everything, I tried so hard to feel sorry for Abby’s miserable experience, but doing this only makes me feel sick, we spent so many hours with Joel and Ellie and we are so touched by their story, that’s why TLOU gained such a success, it made we players feel the same with the characters. But Abby? Come on,I really don’t give a s**t.(Her story was not that good btw)
Naughty dog should at least give players options rather than just output their idea, I know that revenge may just end tragedy but I absolutely don’t want to spent money and time being told “oh you should do this, we need peace”. I only felt 200% angry, 150% sad and 100% insultant during the game and using Abby killed by Tommy and Ellie became the only satisfying moment.
That’s it, 1 points for the great details and gameplay, -9 points for the story. I never thought a video game could make me feel so angry, well guess I’m too naive, sometimes too simple. Nicely done, naughty dog.

Expand

The impact that this created for me was I just didnt care anymore to carry on through with this game. The event that occurs 1hr into the game should have happened nearer to the end. Graphics - 10/10 Animation, environments, and character design are honestly astounding to experience. Such a joy to view. The peak of current gen gaming.

    Gameplay - 7/10

During your time you will as a player be controlling a number of characters throughout the 30hrs or so to complete this game, who alll play very similarly to one another. In all honestly if you have played the first game you know what to expect here very simply and similar puzzles, get from point A to Point B and you decide on either fighting or stealthily getting to point B.The differences here there are more routes and ways how the player can traverse during combat. Above, below and squeezing past tight spaces to escape. Creating a feel of smoothness in whilst taking on 3 different enemies. Sound - 8/10 The score for the game isn't as impactful as the previous, however does it job.

Now the biggest change and improvement here is the enemies.

The sound of a those clickers ringing through your ears when they are near and alert is astonishing, keeping myself in the fear zone when traversing these them. Another area of improvement is human enemies communicate, grief for a lost friend or animal that the player has killed and does immerse you more.

****Special Note**** Naughty Dog should be applauded in there efforts for accessibility to players who may have difficulty in hearing, seeing and dexterity, as the player can create and change to there own needs. The industry really needs to take note.

    FINAL IMPRESSION 6/10

As a fan and the way Naughty Dog decided on certain story elements is very ballsy. Stories take time to become loved, here its destroyed for the fans in the tutorial section of the game. This game is about the story, not its gameplay as it very simple in practice and hasn't evolved from the previous installment. I simply had to force myself to finish this game, after not caring anymore after the games tutorial.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. "It can't be for nothing." Well, turns out that it can. These are Ellie's own poignant words in the first one.

Honestly, I'm not sure where to start. I guess I'll start by noting that I completed one run through and I've returned the game for a full credit. Next, I am completely heartbroken and I'm left utterly disappointed after finishing the game. Killing off a most beloved character is just so unacceptable and disrespectful to the first game. Waiting so long, all for nothing. Giving us such beauty in the first one, that loving relationship between Joel and Ellie...it's all for naught in this game. There is nothing between them in this game except in flashbacks. The flashbacks with Joel and Ellie were amazing, don't get me wrong. Thank you for those at least. It was emotional seeing her get to be an astronaut. Was this supposed to be our "giraffe" moment?

Ok then....first off, I can accept Joel being killed. I get it. He did some bad stuff in his life and killed a lot of people. Fine. What I take issue with is HOW and WHEN he was killed. What I take issue with is the fact you think we would buy the whole narrative that Joel would put himself in that situation with strangers in the first place! That is out of character. He wouldn't even let Tommy pick up people on the road in the first one, but he's just saving a stranger in this one?? He could smell an ambush a mile away in the first game (Pittsburgh), but in this one, that just went out the window. Every rough thing about Joel we grew to love in the first game was simply dismissed and erased. Did you think we wouldn't catch that? Joel isn't stupid and yet you made him thoughtless and reckless in this one. IT MAKES NO SENSE. And less than TWO HOURS in? Shot by Abby and then beaten with a golf club? Put him in a situation like dying while saving Ellie. Let him die with some dignity. What you did was grotesque, especially after an act of kindness.

Secondly, I loved Ellie's campaign. I would play her sections over again. I know Ellie. I hated Abby's campaign. Making us play as the person who killed Joel is just disgusting and the person(s) who thought of this should be FIRED and NEVER hired by another gaming company ever again! It was also an underwhelming story and I was just playing on auto pilot to get to the end. I didn't expect much because her early heinous act in the game is IRREDEEMABLE. I felt nothing about Abby through her campaign. I didn't feel anything for her when she helped Lev and Yara. I didn't feel anything when Mel called her a piece of s***. I felt nothing. No sympathy. No empathy. NOTHING. The story was poorly constructed. There was no character development for Abby. She was just shoved in our faces. I jumped Abby to her death so many times and thoroughly enjoyed it. Otherwise, her campaign was boring as hell and is just cringe throughout.

Third of all, playing as Abby, then beating up Tommy, then beating the HELL out of Ellie and almost killing Dina was just the effing worst. Abby had no moral high ground to stand on telling Ellie she never wants to see her again. She had no right. She had no place in this story.

Fourth of all, ARE YOU KIDDING ME WITH THAT ENDING?! After all the fighting, the hard work, blood, sweat and tears to get to Abby and you thought it was a good idea she just....let her go?!?! What an effing waste!! You should have let us decide if we wanted to kill her or let her go. Leave that decision to us. But you made a game that YOU like, not one that WE like.

And finding out AT THE VERY END that their relationship was on the mend? You should be ashamed. Ellie has nothing. Abby has everything she wanted: Joel dead and she's alive. Please don’t make any more for this series. For me, The Last of Us will be the last and only game I own by Naughty Dog. Your marketing was SO deceptive. I’ve never seen such deceptive marketing just to boost sales. I can't believe you thought it was a good idea to give us this story and make Abby a playable character. It feels like a soulless cash grab, like something you created at the last minute. This was a major fail. I have decided to pretend this story was never created. I am going to pretend it was a horrible nightmare. I hope game of the year skips over you. You don’t deserve it after this abomination.

Thankfully, having played through the full game I can say the game is absolutely amazing and on par with the first. Although Joel dies early, the game does a wonderful job to draw the player back in and empathise with Ellie and the other new protagonist, despite having competing motivations. The narrative payoff is completely worth it at the end of the game and the final chapters really carried emotional weight - not something I’ve experienced in a video game to this extent.
In terms of gameplay, this was a great evolution of the mechanics created in the first game with crafting, stealth and gunplay all being expanded while still maintaining the tense, fight for survival feeling present in the first game. I’d definitely recommend playing the game on the higher difficulties (hard or survivor) as the limited resources do a lot to add to the tension and force players to think about when to engage and what to craft to handle the situations you’re put in over the course of the 25-30 hours it takes to complete.

Overall, an absolute masterpiece. I think much of the negativity around this game comes from the fact that most stories told in blockbuster movies and video games are feel good stories. Most of these stories don’t place emphasis on complexities and contradictions inherent in people - something which this game does so effectively.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am not happy with this game at all. The gameplay hasn't evolved at all and now feels outdated and too simplistic for a game released in 2020. Basically you move from box to box evading the same enemies for 24h.The combat is very boring, enemies do not have any AI development. Killing dogs is not fun at all and something i didn't appreciate when i was forced to do it, as some instances you don't get a choice and you follow an script.

The story is terrible. Batwoman level of terrible. It made me sick so much cringe. It keeps lecturing the player about situations the game itself created with no interaction from the player.
Full of plot holes and too much unnecessary filling, this game could have been 10h shorter.

If you brought this do yourself a favor and return it. Buy it when it's 10$ or less, it does not deserves anything more than that.

If you loved the original characters you will be seriously disappointed with this sequel. Creative director Neil Druckmann has trolled loyal fans by delivering the complete opposite of what they wanted. Joel and Ellie might as well not be in this game. If you really cared about those characters (like I did) then give this a hard pass. The level of narcissism shown by Druckmann is unfathomable. I cannot imagine how he was allowed to derail what could have become a billion dollar franchise. This game will be bought by many loyal fans and like me they will feel betrayed by the false advertising and the blatant lies that tricked them into parting with their money. Sure the game has pretty graphics and smooth game play but beyond that it is soulless. It desperately attempts to be clever by forcing you to commit acts of atrocity and then preaches to you about how awful this is... it’s moronic, patronising and simply fails on every level. The female writer that delivered the brilliant original had no hand in this utter garbage and it shows. I will never buy anything remotely connected to Neil Druckmann ever again. I sincerely hope that his career is over. Don’t waste your time or money, Ghost of Tsushima is coming out soon and then CyberPunk is following later on this year. My advice is to save your money for what are much more likely to be quality entertaining titles. Or if you really need an apocalypse fix and haven’t yet played Days Gone, it’s definitely worth a look, it’s the entertaining sequel that this game should of been

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You may or may not have realized it by now, but Druckman was pushing his agenda heavily from the very start. The only reason TLOU1 succeeded was because he got lucky and made the story ambiguous enough for everyone else to fill in the gaps with a more appropriate interpretation of his story.

First off, I bet most of you never realized this, but even in the first game, there's a heavy skew in the gender representation, pushing the idea that female=good/competent, male=bad/selfish/controlling. Tess is the boss of Joel, and no matter what evil crap she may have done in the past, she gets a proper redemption arc, sacrificing herself to give Joel a shot at delivering Ellie to the Fireflies and "save humanity". Marlene is the leader of the Fireflies, the one beacon of hope for humanity. Maria is the leader of the only properly-functioning settlement and Tommy makes damn sure we understand that "she is in charge". Every other woman/girl in this story is at least strong, competent and likable.

    How about the male characters?

Joel is a jaded selfish sociopath, ex hunter and a veteran thug.

Tommy is a weak little man who followed Joel footsteps regardless of what his moral code dictated, ended up joining the fireflies but left the group later and retired happily as Maria's subordinate husband.

Bill is a nut-job angry loner, and after redeeming himself for helping out our duo, we figure out he's gay and that his partner hung himself after attempting to abandon him.

Henry is an uptight spineless control freak who scolded his little brother every time the poor kid enjoyed himself and who abandoned our protagonists when things got heavy. Killed himself immediately like a coward after executing (infected)Sam.

David (the only other leader of a group) is a pedo cannibal freak.

None of this takes away from the story of course, but it's kinda funny to notice now in retrospect.

In a silly attempt at subverting people's expectations (even in the first game) Druckman tried desperately to portray Joel's actions as selfish and self-indulging, while ignoring his own plot holes and poorly developed lore that led people to interpret the story differently. We mistakenly took a badly written plot of how the fireflies were going to save humanity and create a vaccine as proof of their incompetence. The rushed scenes at the hospital and the weakly developed firefly storyline gave everyone the impression that Joel has every justification to save Ellie from these clowns and kill everyone who stands in his way.

Druckman expected everyone to hate Joel for what he did, and the ending was suppose to weigh heavily on us. Instead, people cheered their escape and just felt a bit sad for having to lie to Ellie about what really happened. Nothing about Joel's actions screamed "evil man", but rather "broken father who couldn't bare to lose another daughter at the hands of some jack-holes who want to cut her head open and kill her in an attempt to develop a vaccine".

I'm sorry to say this guys, but it's all **** Druckman might be the luckiest **** ever. His failure to deliver the intended narrative actually elevated the story's quality, making his agenda driven little project one of the most famous games in gaming history.

This is just my theory, and I bet it's the reason why he doubled down in Part 2 to make sure we ALL UNDERSTAND that Ellie wanted to die in that hospital, that what Joel did was evil and twisted. For me at least, it all makes sense now. TLOU Part 2 is Druckman's pet project to set things straight and punish all of us who "didn't get it".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have never experienced a game like this before and have spent countless hours sitting and trying to understand the feelings I have and the meaning behind the game.

Firstly, The gameplay, graphics, and world are both amazing, that alone makes this one of the best games I have ever played. Never have I been so stressed about attacking an enemy or entering a new area. The game nails this atmosphere, it feels like I am in that world, each encounter with enemies is almost unwanted and frustrating. Infected encounters suck and really add to the experience of being trapped in this terrible world. Every building I entered for supplies, I'd have to evaluate if it was even worth risking running into infected, where in other games the mindset is to just shoot and loot.

As for the story, I think the Abby gameplay could have implemented better, I have no problem playing as her, I just believe where the transition was placed, the game loses a lot of momentum and I found myself unmotivated for the first couple missions because of all the excitement of the Ellie story.

That being said, when the two stories intersect with Abby and Manny taking on the sniper, I thought that was where the game really picked up the pace. That experience was amazing, I knew it was Tommy and I was so excited to Abby to realize the **** she caused when she discovered it was Tommy.

However another gripe I have it the choice to play as Abby in the fight with Ellie, I think this was a total immersion breaker. There was no way I was going to wholeheartedly attack Ellie. In my playthrough I actually let Ellie kill Abby multiple times before I even tried to fight back. This scene is my biggest complaint, but it's only from a gameplay perspective, I think the actual scene was well executed and I understand the actions the characters made.

Now for the hard part, I wish the game had ended at the farm. I know it couldn't, but it hurt me more than anything else to see Ellie throw her life away for revenge. I feel the worst for Dina whose only mistake was to care for a person who like a drug addict couldn't care about anything else. I know most players were angry that Ellie didn't kill Abby at the end but I was just so mad that Ellie would even go to Santa Barbara that I wasn't even thinking about whether I wanted Abby dead or not. In the end I think the game made the right choice. If Ellie killed Abby I think she would have sat on that beach and realized that she didn't feel different. There is no way for her pain over Joel's death to end unless she grieves and she couldn't do that while dead set on revenge. While it sucks that Abby is alive and I know Joel would have stopped at nothing to kill her, Ellie isn't Joel and I don't think she needs that to heal. Killing Abby would have left Lev in the same way Ellie was left and I think Ellie realized that.

Coming home to the empty house and not being able to play guitar devastated me. Ellie had talked about teaching J.J. to play guitar and now she couldn't even do that. But I think its symbolic of her free from Joel's power over her life. At the very end, she lost everything, but it was the first time that she could live the life she wanted for herself, independent of the choices others make for her. So people can be mad at what they want, but in my opinion, the Last of us is Joel's story, and part 2 is Ellie's. The whole game is her journey to coming to terms with her relationship with Joel and I think in the end that was executed very well even if it was so painful to endure.

Like I said, I've never experienced anything like this and don't know if I could ever play through the game again, but the experience was amazing and I'm glad I've played it. I hope they don't make a sequel to Ellie because I like to hope she makes the choices she wants to give her life the meaning shes been looking for ever since Joel took that from her. Plus I love Dina and that baby and think Joel would be happy to see Ellie happy with a family.

While the AI is amazing, the graphics and sounds are nothing short of a technical achievement, and the game is very cinematic, this is completely ruined by: being forced to kill a dog when we were told we wouldn't have to, bad story, and bad writing, and incomprehensible reasons and situations that led up to the death of Joel AT THE START of the game.

I was just in a random arcade filled with all sorts of perfectly detailed machines and games. Some of the complaints I've seen are just so bizarre. You're ok with killing hundreds of humans but it bothers you to kill an attack dog? I think there's a bit of generational disconnect going on here that parallels our political environment. Unfortunately a large portion of people can't separate their political know-it-all behavior from enjoying a video game and that's just awful for them. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game play was similar to the first installment., The graphics are just awesome. The plot and story went in a direction I honestly didn't expect, especially after waiting for 7 years. Some of the marketing tactics used to make a selling point for the game were misleading. In the first installment there was a big focus on character devopment and building an emotional bond between the player and the characters. This current installment came off like it was going to force you to have an emotional bond with Abby and friends. This would've been a more acceptable story line if some of the events were presented in a different order. More time was needed playing with Joel and Elle to allow players to fill the same nostalgia they felt for the first installment. If this happened and within the mist of Joel saving Abby there was the flashback to the end of the first installment and then a subtle transition to the charter Abby's flashback point of view there may have been some aple time to develop the emotional bond the game leads me to believe they wanted the player to have with Abby. If your upset your less like to try and focus on the trails and tribulations that Abby faced growing up and this greatly impacted the way players saw her character. Also, the impact of the violent acts to follow may have been better understood and wouldn't have garnered Abby that instant hate from the fan base I previously referred to. Thubk about it, who wants to play a game with a character you absolutely dispise and can't relate to? No one. There was also a change in the flashback in this installment that didn't mirror the actions that took place at the end of the first installment. So plot holes and just overall continuity of the story began to crumble. Another continuity issue was with the characters. Joel and Elle both were just doing things that based on the character development in the first installment doesn't match the actions/decisions they were making in this installment. It was like they were the same characters, but not really. So a lot of sequences that took place in the story felt forced. You end up just not caring about any of the characters that were not in the first installment and I believe that couldve been different with a change in the sequence of events/flashbacks. Lack of puzzles compared to the previous installment. The ending, I don't know, it seems like there was some confusion in the writing department as to how they really wanted the ending to be. Almost as of they wanted to kill Elle, but of that would have surely meant the end of this series. This very well may still be. We will all have to wait and see.

Overall: 2/10 (I see no replay value for fans of the first installment)

Game Play: 9/10 (similar to the previous installment w/minor hiccups here and there)

Organization/Sequence of events: 1/10 (the player response didn't have to be forced, and character development could've been much better with just a few changes to the sequence of events)

Story/Plot: 3/10 (initially started off as a good story, but the sequence of events just ruined the view of the story the writer wanted it to originally have)
Graphics 9/10 (were just awesome just like the previous installment, although I thought the frame of Abby couldve been a little more polished. Should've had the appearance of being strong without being freakishly looking)

Character Development 0/10 (when it comes to the time players have spent learning Joel and Elle compared to the newer characters...there just wasn't sufficient enough time to develop emotional bonds or gain a true understanding of those characters, thus no interest in them at all)

    Replayability 1/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics - amazing 10/10

Gameplay - polished from the first, still a little clunky in closed spaces 8/10

    Score - amazing 10/10

Story - okay overarching story. To me the revenge theme is fine. Did I expect more creativity from ND? Yes. In addition, the small things that made me love TLOU 1 are lacking: the idle conversations of Joel and Ellie when exploring, Ellie learning how to whistle, the dad jokes, etc. In addition, the new characters are overall interesting, but were not fully flushed out. Some of their actions didn't make sense. We should have explored them more. Like, why did Dina go with Ellie, why does she care so much. Why did Jesse join them, why was did he forgive Ellie so easily being with Ellie. They did so much more with less time with Bill, Henry, Sam, Tess and Marlene than with these characters over 30 hours.
Despite this, I still liked the story. I really enjoyed Day 1 Seattle Ellie and the later half of Abbey's Story rallied hard (the attack on the Scar's Island was cool) - though I did not like Abbey's Day 1/Day 2 Seattle. I did enjoy seeing the characters again. I did enjoy the world of Seattle that was created.
So if this wasn't a sequel to one of the best games of all time the story would be good, but knowing what ND did before I cannot feel but a little disappointed. 6-7/10 depending on my mood.

Overall, I enjoyed the game. If you liked the last of us you will probably find parts of this game you enjoy. However, the story does pale in comparison to its predecessor.

Fantastic gameplay, beautiful graphics, amazing captivating story. they have really built up the world where part 1 left off. Some great, well developed new characters and alot of loose ends tied off. After completing this for the first time I can say with absolute conviction that this is a defining game for this generation of console. Probably the most I have enjoyed any game on the ps4. 10/10

Graphics; Best I've ever seen together with Red Dead Redemption 2.

Sound: Not as memorable as the first game but still very good, on a technical level it's amazing.

Gameplay: The controls are responsive and the animations are among the best I've seen in a game. The AI is not the best but a great improvement over the first game. The dodge and prone mechanics are both nice improvements over the first game.

    Now the bad stuff, I'll start lightly;

The pacing is sometimes worse than the first game due to more open areas, I felt like there was a bit too much exploring before something happend in the story. The first game had more evenly spread out portions of combat/exploration/cutscenes.

The new characters aren't all that intresting, but that's mostly because it's hard to avoid comparing them to Joel and Ellie who are always excellent. Dina is one of the worst and most annoying characters I've ever seen in a game, and totally unintresting. Abby was better but I felt her story could have been told through DLC or a spin-off.

The story in general is not bad, I actually enjoyed alot of it. The main problem I had with the game was Joel's fate. How they could do this to a beloved character that I waited 7 years to go on an adventure with again is unbelivable. A few hours into the game I felt absolutely no reason to go on and finish the game. What kept me going was mostly because I enjoyed the beautiful scenaries.

I had no real issue with the characters being gay/bi/whatever, but after hearing the word "bigot" twice in the first hour I kinda understood that this was gonna be another one of those "message over story" productions.

This could have been so great, the potential is surely there. But Naughty Dog went for shock value instead of something more traditional and maybe boring. The problem with shocking the audience is that now something is broken that can't be fixed, and if there's ever a third game I couldn't care less about it.

I had waited 7 years, I was hyped as hell, I trusted you Naughty Dog, I payed $60, and I got spit in the face, that's how I feel. So while the game looks like a 10 for someone who's not invested in the first game like I was, for me... it will be a genuine 0.

The people we don’t know is much more humanized compared to the first game, and each important character is meticulously written to have multiple layers to their character. Many events may initially seem overall pointless to the story, but if the player keeps an open mind and analyzes how these points are executed, these same events seem to serve much larger roles to the overall plot. The gameplay is incredibly fluent, whether it be stealth or full gunfights. Your freedom to be aggressive, passive, or anywhere in between is encouraged, and your chosen playstyle will likely be an option. Absolutely stunning game Expand

It all felt out of place and for someone that has no prior investment in the characters some of the dialogue didn't seem to fit. I had no compulsion to finish the game and watched the ending on YouTube, just silly really a silly ending for what feels like an ego project

The characters are beautifully written and grow naturally as the story continues. Hats off to naughty dog as they’re the bench mark for triple A games and modern story telling as a whole. 10/10 from me. I generally can’t wait for what naughty dog has installed next, if it’s DLC for this game or a whole new IP you bet I’ll be picking it up day 1 regardless. Cheers Ayden Horner :) Expand

I came to this game because I'm a massive fan of Part 1. But what about part 1 made me such a big fan? Was it the gameplay? No... was it the graphics? No. Was it the scenery? No. What made me fall in love with the game was the story, it was the character growth, it was the character interactions. It was those points that I think most people liked the most. The thing I looked forward the most to in this TLOUII was the continuation of Joel and Ellie's story, or perhaps the story of a new character. I expected a well thought out, excellently written storyline. Instead I got a storyline dedicated to destroying beloved characters from part I, which was not well thought out, was not written well, and was full of ridiculous plot holes.
It does not matter that the graphics of the game is top-tier, or that the gameplay is smooth, or that that the background and environment is amazing, when the story is a pile of dung. And this is especially true for a sequel of a game that became famous because of the story. If I were to compare this to a steak dinner, then TLOU2 would have top quality mash potatoes, and asparagus cooked perfectly, basically the sides would be amazing. But the steak itself would be a 2 dollar rotting piece of meat overseared, overcooked and not looking too good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Obviously, the game is really great when it comes to visuals. Some of the best graphics out there. Gameplay is similar to the original with some upgrades here and there. Customization capabilities, even when it comes to the AI for inidivdual enemies is pretty cool. That will probably be splashed into many single player campaigns in the future.

However, for a story driven game like The Last of Us, the narrative was awful. The first game had success due to the dynamic between Joel and Ellie. This dynamic only appears in the flashbacks in the sequel, and it is a stark difference from the rest of the game. Old characters seem to have been retroactively changed to fit the new story. Actions taken by them in the sequel would never have been taken by them in the original. New characters are incredibly difficult to relate to, and even when backstory is given, many decisions they make are very hard to empathize with.

It seems like Naughty Dog wanted to create a game that simultaneously tarnished the memory of its predecessor and made anyone playing it miserable.
