The death of joel it was sad, but completely necessary for the revenge feeling. If the game give you so much hate is because the immersion in the feelings are better than we expected. Thats why this game diserved 20 point of 10.

Congratulations naughty dogs for crating the best game of the year, even the decade.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Why would you do this to us. This is what happens when you make the characters fit the plot and not vice-versa, you know, when it works. Joel turns into an absolutely idiotic character irecognizable from the last game; he helps a damsel in distress, he & Tommy say their names in front of a stranger twice, which, Joel, knowing what he did, would never do, and then Tommy & him tell them where they currently reside and the former thinks it's a good idea to let them re-stock their supplies. May I remind you that these two are badass survivors who know their fair share of knowledge of the world around them & the people that live in it. Joel completely called a bluff on the ambush that he & Ellie were being a victim of with only a few visual cues. I think this encapsulates all of the Last of Us Pt. 2's plot devices, which fall victim on the same kind of mistakes.

For a game so well designed in other departments (level design is amazing, specially the underwater-sniper-Abby vs. Tommy scene; graphically, the game is stunning, even if we're getting into uncanny valley real fast), the game has some serious plot holes and a story that leaves you a really bad taste, not for the death of your favorite characters, but because it's poorly structured. Clearly, the Abby section should've been first, in order to empathize with her & her reasons.

I don't wanna extend myself so much, but something I haven't heard so much hate about is the gameplay, which deserves it's criticisms. When you don't improve onto an overall gameplay mechanic which was stablished in 2013, there's something wrong with your game. You know what games happened between then & 2020? Metal Gear Solid V, Dishonored 2, etc. And yes, I'm focusing mainly on examples made by stealth games because TLOU2 is, primarely, a stealth game. These games, too, know how to spice things up with clever level design, which I think TLOU2 has, and clever and revolutionary game mechanics, which this game lacks, and it shows in the repetitive gameplay.

The last thing to point out by my part is that the game punishes you and makes you feel like "The Bad Guy" playing as Ellie, at least, while giving you no alternative option for murder. Joel's death is shown almost on it's entirety, with all it's gore & graphic detail involved, while, when Ellie catches Nora, it's not shown at all how she massacres her, when it would've been satisfactory for the main audience. When your game portrays a message of "REVENGE = BAD" you should stick to it and give the player some valid options to make the least killing possible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok before all of the people come at me saying you didn’t finish the game!!!! I did I am actually only 2 trophies from the platinum. Sadly all I can say is that I liked the gameplay as for the story *sigh* I can only say it wasn’t for me. The pacing for me was all over the place. And making me play as Abby for so long it just made me hate her even more and even her father. Honestly Mel said it best when she told Abby “you’re a piece of **** Abby.” And the ending could have been meaningful if it wasn’t so damn floppy floppy. Having Ellie go from giving up chasing Abby and living happy with Dina and JJ. To Tommy guilt tripping her into chasing her down again. To her rescuing her and Lev. The then right before saying they have to do this to then right about to kill her saying nah **** it. It flipped sooo much it was just wrong. The story did have some good moments but they were all overshadowed by making us play as a character at least I could not get behind, like Owen did lol. I tried to like her too I just couldn’t. Sadly gameplay is good but not good enough to get a better score and overshadow how bad the story was. I hope I have enlightened people as to why I couldn’t give it a better score. Have a great week everyone :) Expand

But as a work of art it is a triumph, both in terms of its development from a simple snow western into a doubled edged revenge plot and involving characters with backgrounds different from your typical straight white male protag. It's a significant achievement, and I would never in a million years have expected a narrative to involve more marginalized people in such a normalized way. It's refreshing, as it is cruel and visceral.

Game play wise it remained as tight if not tighter than the first, though with its length, it did begin to test my patience. But with it all most likely being the end of this IP, I really don't mind being in the world for as long as possible. Also it made me cry twice.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The thing about this game, is that it shows you both sides of a story. We love Joel so dearly, it is hard to see past the anger and the thirst for vengeance to kill Abby. Throughout the game we see two journeys, both filled with loosing their loved ones. At first it is indeed normal to hate Abby, but being in her bones, like with Ellie, we understand the choices she made. “An eye for an eye and the world will go blind” never said better. I think Ellie is us, until the very end. It is hard for us to see the truth and the right thing to do, because we’re so hurt, that how could we not seek vengeance. But again, Joel killed Abby’s dad, what would we have done if someone we loved was killed by someone else? This game shows us, as Neil highlights, the cycle of violence, and vengeance. It’ll never end, that’s why this game is so powerful. There’s no good character or bad character in this story (except a few characters such as ehem Isaac and infected), just the never ending loop, of wanting to make someone suffer the way they made us suffer, without considering other people’s stories or backgrounds. This is so important in today’s society, we blame someone without knowing their reasons. This game is not for closed minded people, but I think that’s why it was made, to open our eyes. Expand

I’m going to steer clear of whether or not I loved or hated it, but I will offer some perspective on why I think the themes were important.

I see this game from a perspective of someone that has had to sympathize with a lot of different people that were very unsympathetic.

The last of us isn’t about the characters from TLOU1 (Complaints about Tess? Didn’t think so). That’s the problem with complaining about any given character being in the spotlight.

The story is about the last of humanity. By changing the narrative to a different set of characters, it moves the story along. By tying Ellie in, there is some continuity but the problem is that if all you came for is the hope of continuing to use the same characters over and over, it remains forever stagnant.

We don’t own this world, and there are lots of stories to be told about what humanity would be doing fending for itself. In such a hard climate, we have to remember that each character could stumble and fall at any moment and meet a very inglorious death. That is the reality of such a world. Joel made a lot of people meet those ends in part 1. No tears for those people? Didn’t think so.

We praised George R. R. Martin’s book series for being fair and equal to the characters, no matter how much you loved them. Goodness was rewarded with nothing. Don’t get me wrong, if I want to just see “life” happen, I can look outside my window - so I want this game version of “life” to be compelling and dramatic. I want there to be surprising plot twists and turns. I want there to be epic consequences to actions. Sometimes I want what I think to be the “bad” guy to not get their just desserts. If there is going to be unfairness, I just want there to be a good reason to go there. And to tell you the truth, I think there was a good reason for lots of unfairness here.

But the lesson I think that was learned here was that lots of times in both games, characters had the option to be less cruel, to turn around and go home. Joel could have not taken Ellie across the country in part 1 (remember, he was smuggling her). Ellie didn’t have to go on her journey. The mysterious woman didn’t, either. The consequences for their journeys, for doggedly pursuing those goals was to learn a harsh lesson - you take risks and pay for them. Turns out the first game had a MUCH longer ending. We just had to wait 7 years to see it.

If it upsets you that good guys can do bad things, or that bad guys can have sympathetic sides, life is going to be upsetting. Bad guys perform kind acts, good people meet unjust ends. That’s... life. TLOU1 started with a stab to the heart. The world isn’t meant to be fair, and justice is a floating concept. That is what The Last of Us as a series is meant to represent. Humanity as a whole is many stories. When you zoom out, we talk about things like “countries” and “society” as if any of those things actually mean anything at all, but when you zoom in with a microscope it gets downright complicated.

Each person you pass by on the streets got up in the morning, put on clothes, had thoughts, had emotions, and had a story before going by you for thirty seconds. If they bump into you or were rude to you, you might think of them as a terrible person - but they think the same of you - and you then forget them. Ships passing in the night. But they forget that you too had a story that led you to them.

If a main character wants justifiable revenge, well, that’s easy to sympathize with. And don’t get me wrong, I root for lovable main characters. Don’t we all?

But the original Last of Us was such a good game because we rooted for Joel in spite of his evil past. And Joel’s selfish actions are easy to forget because his story is one of redemption. In doing what he wants, we forget that his actions change the world around him, for better or worse. We forget that before we met him, he was a different man. We only see him in the original for 30 hours, and the reality is that he was a terrible person for 20 years. We sympathize with him because he shows affection for a little girl and with that we rationalize what the story tells us of the evil he wrought.

Don’t get me wrong, I am selfish. I would make the same choices. You are meant to feel as he did. And you are meant to be confused in TLOU2. Life is confusing.

I don’t think that The Last of Us Part II is meant to teach any great lessons. It’s just stories about the way humanity is, tales about what we are when we pursue vengeance sub happiness.

And we watch the full story’s journey, learning about blurred lines of good and evil, learning to sympathize and possible to feel a little queasy with that sympathy, maybe we should just realize that people aren’t “good” or “evil.” They’re just people.

If you decided before you pick up the game that you hate the characters, grow up.

It is pretty obvious to me that The Last Of Us Part II in order to follow a very specific political agenda, loses elements which made the first game so unique and playable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tried to write a review but there's too many issues to go into detail so I'm going to give my summary.

The way the killed Joel off was dreadful he deserved a lot more especially seeing how he was beloved by so many of fans from the first game. It was like the developers wanted to annoy their fans.

Ellie's story was completely pointless and meaningless as you are forced to play as Abby and stop Ellie and killing her friend Jesse and almost killing Tommy and Dina.

Being forced to play as Abby was a terrible move and completely destroyed the pacing of the game and ruined my enjoyment especially with multiple flashbacks from playing with Ellie reminding you that Abby brutally murdered Joel and now you have to plays as her for 12 hours as they show you her dull backstory. I feel like it would've been better if for example, Abby was introduced first at the start of the game with scenes of the hospital just after the events of the first game to introduce us to Abby and show motive. Instead it was terrible character development which was too little too late.

Also no character development for Abby's friends they're still just nobodies who help Abby whenever she asks no matter what it seems.

Story writing was just bad. Trying to give Abby morals even though she never once questioned her choices and was happy betraying her own friends and allies to make her feel less guilty about herself.

Turning Ellie into a bad person was even more poor writing and was ill suited especially after the fact that every decision you make and action you take is pointless and niether the player or character get their release.

The ending was lack lustre especially as you finally get to play as Ellie again but instead of excitement it was boredom with me thinking "here we go again". Abby, somebody nobody cares about, gets the better end of the stick with the encounter with Ellie making the entire game a waste of time.

I shall now reinstall the Last of Us remastered and pretend this game never existed as I feel 2020 would be better without it.

The story is the worst in the history of gaming: you kill the protagonist and play the murderer with no explanation and you also play the daughter-figure of the victim, whose primary purpose is revenge. In the end you don't get revenge though, and the storytortures you with unskippable filler just like a low budget anime. It is almost like the story was made bad on purpose...

HELLO PEOPLE, its a brand new game with a new story line obviously, what's the point of naughty dog doing the same thing like the first one, you might as well just keep playing the first one right? These show how much people can't take something new for a change.. The twisted story lines has kept me wow-ING all the time. The game play is so sick with all the one shot angle going on.. And what you guys care about is that they cut off old characters.. And since the beginning, naughty dog has make it sooo clear that we will play as Ellie.. Hence the storyboard should be about Ellie.. What do you expect?? For those people who can't afford to accept the changes, I would really like to hear about what type of story line you could come up with, and which it's up to the standard that you guys wanted.. And if you hated so much, yes you can just stop playing the game and leave naughty dog alone with all these bad reviews, because I really don't think they deserve this.

Well done naughty dog.. Its a pleasure to play tlou2, you guys did great..!!

Então o meu veredito final é : O jogo é magnífico , the last of us Part 2 não é jogo de Ellie,Joel , é um jogo sobre pessoas. Expand

In the second game, they completely destroy everything that you loved about the story and characters you grew to love. Gameplay is good, but that's not what I am here for. It reminds me of the Star Wars Skywalker trilogy, taking characters and story and completely tossing them aside to make room for new characters that no one cares about. I had such high hopes for this franchise, but it seems that these days it just isn't worth getting attached to any series. 1/10 Expand

Makes me sad because I used to love Naughty Dog. But since Uncharted 3 I haven't been excited for any of their games. It's been a downhill slope since then but I didn't realize it until this abomination came out. Too much cinematic focus with dumb-downed gameplay. Feels like they've lost their roots like too many companies do.

On gameplay alone gives this a 10/10 for me. It's super immersive, and seamless in its transitions between payable areas and cutscenes- the qualities of a perfect cinematic game. However, the storyline was a little depressing at times, and I felt like the characters were doing things I wouldn't do; in the context of roleplaying as the character, I was able to look past those grievances.

I played through the first TLOU countless times, cried every time Sarah died completed it 100% grew to not only like but to relate to Joel, Ellie, Henry, Sam, Tommy and even Marlene. This game part 2 offers NONE of the qualities that made the first one not only good BUT a masterpiece. I have more respect for and carry more love towards Henry a character from the first that you play with for not even 1/5 of the story, then I will ever for Abby. She is an antagonist that you clearly are not here to relate to, given what she does at the beginning of the game without any exposition or explanation, yet you are forced to play as her for a good 8-10 hours of the game. Subverting expactions is NOT how you treat the sequel to one of the, if not the, most beloved PS4 titel of all time. We grew with, and came to love, relate and appreciate both Ellie and Joel through there story of grief, redemtion and hope from the first game, yet in this one it seems that the story writers either didnt play the first game or they didnt care about continuing the story where we left of. Joel accepting Sarah's death and Ellie hoping for a better future as a surrogate father daughter realationship. It breaks my heart to write all of this but I went into this game 100% blind and still with some hopes that all this negative attention the game was getting was wrong. To anyone calling this a "masterpiece" either you are bought or you just like the semi stealth gameplay to which I say go play assassins creed it offers similar stealth gameplay only better with a wider scope and not for 60 bucks. It breaks me to write this I loved ALL characters and the story from the first one such a shame they made it the way it is. The story and writing is so atrocious and upsetting, if you actually make it through the entire game, it leaves you feeling empty and like you just wasted a substantial amount of time for no reward. I can't emphasize enough how upsetting this game was. I was a huge fan of the first game and eagerly anticipated the sequel, only to have this crap fest of a video game slapped in my face. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The only feeling I felt when I finished the game was sadness. I can't really believe how the second game can be so bad, while the first game is so beautiful. The Last of Us was a brand I valued a lot. I still value the first game very much and I enjoy it even though it has been 7 years. However, I was very uncomfortable even when I finished the second game for the first time. Maybe I gave the game such a bad score because I was very emotional, but I am sure this game does not deserve 95. There are thousands of games and movies about zombies. What makes The Last of Us so popular is their characters. Father-daughter relationship between Joel and Ellie. These two characters make this game valuable. I'm not saying anything to Joel's death, I'm just bothered that it was done so badly. While I missed these two characters so much, I think we should have spent some time with them. Not with flashbacks! I think it would be a better time for Joel to die later. The death of Joel in the first hours of the game made me angry, I was angry not because he died, I was angry because we couldn't spend time with him. I also congratulate whoever came up with the idea of playing with Abby. He/She couldn't make the game worse. I felt that the time I played with Abby was wasted. Another issue is that Abby isn't dead at the end of the game. Ellie is returning for revenge, but just losing more. Two fingers and Dina. So if this is a story of revenge, it's definitely Abby's story. Why is Ellie in the cover art? You have destroyed people's trust with false advertisements.

I loved The Last of Us. I loved it with all of my heart, Ellie and Joel have special places in my heart, and soul. Their characters are burned in deep. This game... throws everything out the window. Grizzled men, who've had YEARS of experience surviving in the post-apocalypse toss ALL of their caution, all of their years of experience into the wind, and open up to complete strangers, not knowing if they were actually hostile or not, where Joel has been shown, in The Last of Us to be cautious, and wise to the tricks of Hunters, and other people.

If that's not bad enough, Ellie is a complete train wreck. Nothing remains of the girl we got to know 7 years ago. She's rotten. There's nothing left.

And then, we're forced, for something like 10 hours, to play as the villain we HATE, as the narrative desperately tries to force us to like her. It's disgusting. It's emotionally manipulative. The game actually employs gaslighting. You will be told everything you know and remember is wrong, by an abusive game. It's disgusting. Don't buy it. Don't be in the same zip code as the game. It's not canon whatsoever.

They tried to form a story about how revenge is bad, and it only creates a revolving door of revenge. But the one who got revenge, who actually killed who they wanted to kill, gets off scott free. Hell, Ellie SAVES her life, by cutting her down, she was left for dead.
Meanwhile, the one who forgave her, Ellie, loses everything. Her father figure. Her friends. Her loved ones. and two fingers, she can't even play Joel's guitar anymore.

I don't know why this game is getting so much hate. You have to play it completely through to grasp the meaning of the story. Yes things happen that you may not like but that's how life is and that's what Naughty Dog did. They delivered a real game with real life scenarios.

The Last of Us Part II is not a bad game by any means, I experienced a lot of different emotions playing through the different chapters and encountering different characters. It is a very difficult task to live up to the lofty standards that the first Last of Us set. Whilst the sequel is a very solid game, it has multiple flaws that don't make it that Game of the Year / Greatest Game ofThe Last of Us Part II is not a bad game by any means, I experienced a lot of different emotions playing through the different chapters and encountering different characters. Whilst the sequel is a very solid game, it has multiple flaws that don't make it that Game of the Year / Greatest Game of all time contender.

For the positives, the graphics for this game are beautiful. They are up there with Red Dead Redemption 2 for the best graphics that I have seen in a video game. Another positive for me was Abby. I felt like Abby's story progressed a lot further than Ellies and I felt like I could understand her motives for what she did.

My main gripe with the game is Ellie herself, I felt that she took a step back from what made her so great in the first game. She lost her sense of humour, and was reduced to a bitter former shell of herself. I didn't enjoy her sections as much and her dialogue was rather dry and boring. If it wasn't for Dina keeping some element of humour in the levels, it could have been worse.

My other issue is the clunky combat. I have never really been a fan of Naughty Dog's combat system. The combat feels clustered and tedious. The enemy AI is also ridiculously funny as they can't even see me from directly in front of them.

Last of Us Part 2 is a good game and it definitely has some strong elements that keep it engaging. But my dislike for Ellie in this game and the clunky combat keep me from giving this game a higher score. It is a good game but definitely not game of the year, FF7 Remake, Doom Eternal, and Animal Crossing all rate higher for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished the game on normal mode and felt inclined to post my spoiler free opinion about the game. I heard that there are a lot of negative user reviews going around out there and I do believe it is just cancel culture and homophobia at its finest trying to tank the game. Fortunately for me, I decided early on that I would not indulge myself in too many spoilers early on since the development of this game was announced and I suggest anyone that plays do the same. The game truly is a work of art and well worth the wait. Expand

I want to make this as fair of a review as I can.

Graphics 8/10 - Most people say how amazing this game looks. Had this game come out in 2018 I would agree but with games like Doom Eternal coming out this year the graphics of this game now seems dated in comparison, it still looks great (forest areas most notably) but not amazing. The face motion capture also looks uncanny valley more

Graphics 8/10 - Most people say how amazing this game looks. Had this game come out in 2018 I would agree but with games like Doom Eternal coming out this year the graphics of this game now seems dated in comparison, it still looks great (forest areas most notably) but not amazing. The face motion capture also looks uncanny valley more often than not.

Sound 9/10 - Voice acting, music and sound effects really sell the feel of the world and are as good as one could want.

Game play 2/10 - Game play is a real let down, it doesn`t build on the first game and if any thing subtracts from it. With unlimited uses of your knife it really is a sneak around grab and stab game which is super repetitive, yes you could play it other ways but this ends up being the most effective way. They really needed to have a level of resource management, limited the number of times you can use the knife, or reward the player of using different tactics for an encounter.

Story 1/10 - With out listing any spoilers the choice made at the 2~ hour mark was terrible and really killed the mood of the game from that point on. it also feels like a story was written early on and the game built on that then changed very late in development as it starts to be very disjointed even the later level designs suggest this. The ending also didn`t sit well for me as its not the actions, I feel the character would have made.

Overall this game is a 5/10 (Average) It feels like a game that had a lot of shortcuts taken game play wise with the hope the graphics would make up for and a story that feels disjointed and character traits that don't connect well to the first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ll start off with I have completed The Last of Us part 2 in its entirety. I have also played the first game multiple times and am a fan of the series like many others. Many people have expressed their anger, resentment, and disappointment with this game on the internet over the last couple of weeks to days. I feel this frustration comes from the game having had major spoilers Leak weeks prior to launch. Many people got key points of what happens given to them without playing the game. I will admit I was upset when I read some of the leaks, (you almost couldn’t be on the internet if you didn’t want to be spoiled). I tried as hard as I could to not spoil too much and let my experience the first time truly be my own. I think the game truly has to be played in its entirety before you can understand what they were trying to do with the story. If you are halfway through playing and write a review you won’t be near where you would feel by the end. The jumps on time and cinematic flashbacks are key to feeling the way you should and cast light to why characters act the way they do. This story is beautiful, dark, gritty, passionate, expansive, and many other words of emotion all jammed into one. MY BIGGEST TAKE AWAY IS YOU CANNOT JUDGE THIS BOOK BY ITS COVER OR MID PAGES, YOU HAVE TO READ IT IN ITS ENTIRETY! I so far have disagreed with many of the reviews I’ve heard since the release of the game and I stand by my rating of the game. It truly is a masterpiece but one that you won’t immediately see until completion. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
