I don’t know what people are whining about. The gameplay is spectacular, the story is keeps you engaged, the scars are terrifying, and the cutscene to gameplay transitions are fantastic. Not to mention that it’s absolutely gorgeous! 10 out of 10 for me!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not the game the fans wanted at all. Naughty Dog took a huge risk with the story. First off, amazing graphics and gameplay. We had to watch our favorite characters be destroyed and taken to their lowest points. We had to attempt to empathize with the “villain” of the game. No one liked playing as Abby at first, but she is actually pretty like able by the end. The way the game shows the affects of actions and comes together full circle is amazing. Ellie not killing abby shows that she has a tiny bit of human left in her. It is heartbreaking but amazing at the same time. It’s not meant to be a happy ever after story or something that takes the easy route. We get a better view of the world and the harsh way that actions affect everyone. Naughty dog said that you have to go in with an open mind and that not everyone would like the game. At first I hated playing as Abby and hated the way the game was going but it changed my mind and questioned my morals. Expand

I replayed The Last Of Us remastered the week before part 2 released so it was very easy to compare the two. The original is a 10/10 but does have its flaws. I forgot how little dialogue there actually is between Ellie and Joel and how much of the game is spent running around in silence. I have heard a lot of people saying they loved the first game but hated the second one; yet many of the flaws they passionately criticize in this new release are very much present in the original. Personally I thought part two was a very smart continuation of the story that answered many questions from the 1st game. It also provided ample fuel for speculation and discussion, similar to the ending of the original. Having played both games back to back, I can say that they actually match up well and are directly intertwined in fundamental ways that I found satisfying as a longtime fan of the original.

I took my time with this game and it is a BIG game. The amount of content provided blows away almost all similarly priced games and delivers an exceptional amount of value for $60. Coming from someone who thought Uncharted 4 was a blast but ended too suddenly, the scope of the Last of us 2 allows you to fully immerse yourself in the world. The documents and collectibles available in the game are actually fun and engaging this time around, and seriously help to flesh out the story and add atmosphere. Collectibles were a major disappointment in the original and I was thrilled to see Naughty Dog put much more effort into them this time around. I enjoyed exploring every single zone to fully take in the visuals and discover hidden secrets, and it felt rewarding to do so.

Speaking of visuals, this game is stunning from beginning to end. It is by far the best looking game of this generation and even people who hate the story can't help but praise how damn good this thing looks. The frame rate remains silky smooth even in the largest open spaces and during frantic combat. Not once did a technical glitch break my immersion and I always felt fully in control of my character. The variety of locations and color pallets will make you stare in awe, sometimes for minutes at a time.

After replaying the original, it was clear to me that combat needed improvement. Part 2 improves upon the original's game play in almost every way. It is tense and brutal, but also carries with it a huge amount of variety and player choice. Your character has much more momentum and when your stealth plan breaks down, you can sprint and hide and ambush even in the heat of battle. The game also features an incredibly good checkpoint system that consistently updates your progress mid encounter, but that will also allow you to completely start over if you wish. Restarting from your checkpoint takes less than 2 seconds which allows you to easily rectify a missed headshot that alerts the whole camp. I found myself using this feature often so that I could play through each encounter in a way that felt tactical and satisfying. I never lost more than a minute of progress and load times were basically nonexistent. Although the combat is some of the most realistically portrayed violence in a game, it never felt too over the top or in bad taste. If you shoot someone in the head they die instantly; if you shoot someone in the neck it is also an instant kill but they sputter and choke for a few seconds before falling silent. It added a certain realism but never made me feel uncomfortable. I actually had fun much the same way adults enjoy a good R rated movie such as gladiator for realistically portraying violence.

Finally to address the story. It is complicated, non-linear and gives the player many opportunities to draw their own conclusions and make their own judgments. I must mention that this ambiguity was openly praised in the original, and what made the original's ending so good is undeniably present in part 2. Personally I found the story mature, heartfelt, tragic, and believable. I didn't cry the way I did during parts of the original, but I very much enjoyed the expertly crafted tale. You will not end this game with a feeling of "OMG I have chills" such as I felt upon completing Bioshock Infinite or the original TLOU. Instead this story is very much a sum of its parts that leaves you pondering and recalling details long after completion. I felt a little let down by the end, but the longer I think about it, the more everything seems to tie together into a masterful work of art. It is not perfect, but is so carefully crafted that I don't feel in a position to point out a specific change or flaw, for doing so would potentially ruin the cohesive tale and emotional impact of the game.

In conclusion, very few games match the high bar Naughty Dog has set. If you absolutely hate exploration, looting, 3rd person shooting and complicated stories I can understand a 8/10 review.

At a technical and playable level it is achiever, however all its mechanics and impressive graphics only exist to give depth to its narrative and history, and this is absolute rubbish, not because they have inclusive characters, that part is perfectly fine, I am a big fan of sagas as mass effect, which have a lot of inclusive characters, the problem, I insist, is that their argument is simply bad

This game will make you angry. Why wouldn't it? Playing the role of the one person who you hate the most is utterly infuriating.

I don't forgive Abby for what she's done, but I can understand it. I can understand and sympathize with every character in this game. No one is perfect, including us. I believe that the people rating this poorly are not (yet) willing to see how it's telling a story of loss and despair, something that will make you look at yourself and see how an eye for an eye blinds the world. It's a sickening thing to see your greatest adversary as something more than what you want them to be. It's sickening to see them smile, laugh, and crack jokes. You don't want them to pet dogs, you don't want them to have friends and goals, you don't even want them to pet dogs. Along with everyone, I absolutely hated Abby and playing with her. However, after meeting Lev and Yara, I had a change of heart- as did Abby. There's no way to be alright with the entire situation. I didn't like her but I respected her actions with everything that's happened. Mel already said it; "You were always an **** (to Abby)." It's only through the journey with Lev and Yara that she redeemed herself in my eyes.

Everyone is just living their own life. I hope you, dear reader, can see it this way too. If TLOU was reversed with Ellie in Abby's shoes, I believe everyone would be okay with her murdering the **** out of whoever killed Joel in the first game. Everyone wants revenge in this game, and it's proven to be futile.

Ellie's struggle with Joel's death deals with loss and forgiveness. Forgiving Joel isn't hard to do after the events of Part I. Forgiving herself for not being able to reconcile with Joel is another layer on top of her guilt... what fuels her in a quest of vengeance. It ultimately consumed everything.

I won't give it a 10 because of how stressing the story was; it's going to be hard to replay this, not gonna lie.

Pero por esto tampoco es merecedor de un 4 para abajo como muchos lo puntean, si la historia deja mucho que desear pero no hay que negar que mejoró un monton graficamente y jugablemente dando mecanicas interesantes. The game is solid. The gameplay is ultra smooth and fun, and the addition of prone stealth and proximity mines was very welcome. Not going to lie, the jarring experience of switching to Abby bugged me (both bc she’s been the antagonist for 14 hours-ish and bc her character progression starts completely over in terms of ability unlocks). To say that was a emotional ride would be an understatement.

The payoff for playing as Abby came in the parallels between her and Joel, from craftable shivs required for stealth kills to the act of turning on her allies to save a child. I felt like she learned something about how her actions affected others.

The ending was tragic. No other words really. But overall, the game was a very enjoyable experience and well-made.

I would also like to point out that this is a legit review and my honest opinion. I'm a huge fan of the first game. Some people are giving this game a bad review because they think it is overly politic - that is complete BS. The game has no politic agenda at all. If you somehow have a problem with that the game contains characters like muscular women or LGBTQ people that exist in our society - you seriously need to change your backwards mentality.

My problem with the game (and many others as well) is not political, it's the storytelling and character development. Early in the game, an event happens that forces Ellie to go to Seattle on a quest for revenge. The plot is nothing spectacular per se, but it could’ve still been interesting for character development nonetheless. Following Ellie on her quest for revenge is in the beginning mostly enjoyable, but eventually leads to a point where you no longer can understand her actions and even start questioning how they make sense. About halfway through the game, there is a sudden change of perspective, essentially one big side mission that is there to provide the player a better understanding of the context and the characters that have been introduced with the sequel. One of the primary reasons for this sequence is to let players develop empathy for some of the main characters that this new story involves. This simply does not work. At all. At this point in the story, most of these characters have so far been completely despicable without showing any redeeming qualities, and there is little interest nor motivation to see any of the reasons that lie behind this behavior. The explanations we are given fail to justify the actions and the way these explanations are delivered is just so poor and unsatisfying that it came to a point where I no longer wanted to finish it. There are even moments during this part where I put down the controller because I didn’t want to push the button prompts and see what happened next. Hoping it would pay off in the end, I kept playing, but I never got to a point where I felt compassion or truly understood the actions that were made by some characters. The story desperately tries to create empathy for them, but the reasons behind their actions and the “redemption arcs” they go through just leave zero impact on you when you already know what they’ve done. Maybe it would’ve been more impactful if they instead had focused on introducing the backstory of characters before certain important events took place. But I think it essentially boils down to the small amount of backstory we get, and how this small amount is somehow supposed to justify their questionable decisions. While many of Ellie’s decisions definitely are questionable as well, I still can’t help but feel compassion for her. After all, I grew up with her in the first game. The new characters haven’t had this development, and from the start they leave me feeling disconnected. While there are some interesting moments during this later half of the game, for the most part it is just a drag that you want to get through as fast as possible to see if it will pay off. Unfortunately it never does, as the ending at least for me was incredibly unsatisfactory.

Overall, the game has you for the most part either feeling miserable or angry. It is extremely violent, to the point that it just becomes unnecessary and too much. While there are a few moments that are truly uplifting, they are indeed few. In the beginning I actually felt emotionally moved by many of the events that occurred in the game. But it came to a point where I just stopped caring and even started laughing. While a story of constant misery does seem plausible in a post-apocalyptic world, it also inevitably leaves you feeling void and dissatisfied. This is something that the first game managed to deal with so well – there were both moments of tears but also moments of joy and more importantly, hope. This game extinguished any hope that was created from the first one, and leaves you with only hopelessness.

Lastly, I will mention that the game really succeeds at creating an atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic world. Environments are absolutely stunning and the soundtrack is beautiful. It is easily one of the most visually impressive games out there today. Gameplay is very similar to the first one, it has a few minor improvements but is far from innovative. At least to me, the gameplay was never the biggest strength of this series, the storytelling was. But the story in this game is a letdown and completely butchers everything that I fell in love with in the first game while immensely failing at introducing and explaining any of the new characters. All in all, if you loved the first game – I’m sad to say you’re probably better off just pretending this game never existed.

Any game, movie, book, song etc that can accomplish this is deserving of praise. While there is much to enjoy about this game, it isn’t without flaws. There is a rather large lull in the halfway point of the game. As far as the narrative, this lull makes a lot of sense. As far as creating and maintaining interest in playing, this lull is almost destructive. If you can push past the halfway point, you will be rewarded. The sequel? It feels like it was written by someone who had an agenda as their primary motivation rather than creating a good story.. (Reminds me of East German Theatre prior to the collapse of the wall). It feels forced, illogical and the main moral "point" completely misses the mark based on player's experience with the original. While in university I remember having to sift through tons of bogus academic articles that applied Freud to literally everything... IS JUST SHALLOW AND AS I STATED ELLIE DOES HAVE REASON TO TAKE VENGEANCE, ALTHOUGH THE GAME TRIES SO HARD TO MAKE IT SENSELESS, FACT IS ELLIE IS WAY MORE ENTITLED TO A REVENGE SINCE SHE BEGGED ABBY AND ABBY CHOSE TO MURDER JOEL WAY WORSE THAN THE WAY HE KILLED HER DAD AND FOR MORE SELFISH REASONS (YOU CAN CALL JOEL'S REASONS SELFISH AS WELL BUT IT WASN'T PERSONAL WITH ABBYS DAD AND SHE F****NG KNOWS THAT) WHICH WAS TO CAUSE HIM PAIN, TO CAUSE ELLIE PAIN , ACCIDENTALLY YOU CAN CALL IT BUT NONE THE LESS, SHE MADE HER WATCH. BOTTOM LINE IS WHAT ABBY DID IS WORSE, CLEARLY WORSE THAT WHAT WAS DONE TO HER THEREFORE ELLIE IS ENTITLED TO A PROPER RETALIATION WHICH SHE DOESN'T GET BECAUSE DRUCKMANN TRIED VERY HARD TO CONVINCE US THAT ABBY'S A NICE PERSON, "NICER THAN ELLIE".SUDDENLY SHE HAD A CHANGE OF HEART AFTER AND READ THIS PLEASE, AFTER SHE GETS WHAT SHE WANTS THEN SHE BECOMES AWARE IT WAS A MISTAKE AND DECIDES IN THE MOST SHALLOW STUPID ILLOGICAL WAY TO MAKE AMENDS WITH THE UNIVERSE HELPING OUT SOME RANDOM KIDS, THAT OBVIOUSLY HAPPEN TO SAVE HER LIFE BY ACCIDENT. WELL AS REALISTIC AS THE ATTEMPT GOES GUESS WHAT IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY, IF YOU BY ACCIDENT HIT SOMEONE WITH YOUR CAR AND KILL HIM YOU STILL GO TO JAIL. ABBY CLEARLY DESERVED TO BE BRUTALLY KILLED AND WE WERE DENIED THAT IN THE WORST POSSIBLE MANNER (BY MAKING US BELIEVE SHE AND ELLIE BOTH HAD THE SAME REASONS AND MOTIVATIONS FOR VENGEANCE WHICH THEY'RE NOT SORRY) "HEY ABBY'S A PERSON TOO" WE DON'T CARE, IT'S A LAME STORY. WHY? BECAUSE WE PLAYED A PREVIOUS 30 HOUR GAME TO UNDERSTAND THE STRUGGLE OF A MAN TO KEEP ELLIE SAFE QUITE SIMPLE YES AND NOW YOU WANT US TO BE INVESTED MORE IN THE SIDE OF THE POOR DAUGHTER OF THE DOCTOR THAT GOES AROUND SAVING ZEBRAS BUT DOESN'T QUESTION HIMSELF TWO TIMES MORALLY ABOUT KILLING A LITTLE GIRL BECAUSE HEY "F**K IT'S NOT MY DAUGHTER".NO, YOU JUST CAN'T GET AWAY WITH THAT SIMPLE AS THAT, YOU CAN'T JUST SWITCH HORSES IN THE MIDDLE OF A RACE, IS THE SAME WITH A STORY, YOU JUST CANT ABANDON THE CHARACTERS THAT WE'RE INVESTED IN TO SAY LIKE "OH NOW I GET IT ABBY IS GREAT ALL SHE DID FOR THOSE KIDS AWESOME WAY BETTER THAN ELLIE F**CK HER AND JOEL" HE SHOULD'VE DONE A GAME ABOUT ABBY ONLY WITHOUT JOEL OR ELLIE IN IT IF YOU WANT TO MAKE SOMETHING AS BOLD AND STUPID AS THAT. END OF STORY. Expand

This game shouldn't be existed since it ruins everything has ever existed in the first part1. The golfing scene and the meaningless final battle have done it very well. It destroyed all logic from the first part. ND wants a new game of throne ending? Now they have it. With the bunch of 10/10 from press' reviewers (surely grabbing lots of money from Sony) ---> GOTY has come. Good game!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've rated this 3/10 mainly for the story. The graphics are honestly absolutely amazing and one of the best I've seen from any video game. Damn. Really good. The gameplay is an improvement on the first one, but in my eyes it's mostly filler in-between the story telling. It plays very well though and does its job. But, this game is mainly about its story and why I so dearly loved the amazing first game. And the story of Part 2 is absolutely terrible, even nonsensical.

I'll start at the beginning and work my way through the story. Obviously major spoilers here. So as we know from the first game, Joel is in deep water with the Fireflies. And as we've seen from the first game, Joel is a very cautious un-trusting man. For an example, a survivor is hurt on the road in the first game but its actually an ambush, Joel knows this and just speeds his car up to run them over and get away. So we know what kind of person Joel is.

So at the beginning of the game, Abby is looking for and ends up finding Joel and his brother Tommy. Joel even SAVES Abby's life here. Does this change Abby wanting to kill Joel at all? Even second guess? No. Joel literally saves her life, and instead of something interesting going on and Abby being juggling this guilt around and thinking about still killing Joel- nope. She doesn't care that that happened at all.. okay. Sure. Boring, but sure. So Abby ends up taking Joel to her friends, and Abby ends up torturing and killing him for thanks for saving her life. Cool. The problem with this is, the scene leading up to this doesn't make any sense.

So we know Joel is a cautious man who knows that he is in a lot of trouble with other people. Right? Yet.. he's shown to be so ridiculously trusting here that these people may as well be his childhood friends or even family. It's so unbelievable for him that you can only think this even happened BECAUSE the story needed it to, not what the characters would do. Joel follows Abby and her friends inside the house, who proceed to lock the door behind him and start to crowd around him. Joel tells them his name and him and Tommy told Abby his name earlier. So Joel is just following this girl he's never met before into a house of all of her friends, who proceed to lock the door behind him and crowd around him. And he's just.. doesn't react at all, like its normal. What?

Then, another nonsensical thing is Ellie comes to his rescue. Opens the door in the house to see Abby beating Joel to death. Ellie has a gun in her hand. She's standing outside the door and watching this happen. Does she shoot right then and there? No. She rushes inside to get tackled to the ground and that scene plays out. Really? Have these characters all lost their brains?? What is going on here? It doesn't make sense and it's not what these characters would do.

I don't have enough words so I'll have to come to my next biggest gripe. This story just plays out and does things that make no sense at all, and characters do things they wouldn't do just so Ellie can feel sad. One big example I have here is Mel.

Ellie kills people left and right, literally kills a dog ten seconds earlier and calls it stupid, but once someone has a baby OH NO! She gets absolutely heart broken over killing, well, not really the person but just the baby. And they don't mention the baby at all previously? Not once? Like 'please don't kill me I have a baby'. No, the pregnant woman just tries to straight up fight Ellie and dies and THEN they reveal it of course. Cool. And in a later cutscene you can easily see how pregnant she is, she's literally looking 8 months pregnant and just about to give birth, seriously. Her belly is HUGE, but she 'hides' it when Ellie's killing her with a jacket like that somehow magically conceals it. Right. That, and their group actually wanted her to go out and do grunt work, patrol around and basically go to the 'front line' while being that pregnant. Abby even says she can get off the assignment if she asks but 'no, I don't want to sit around'. But.. you want to be around dangerous situations that could hurt your baby? Shooters, clickers? What if she takes a fall? What is this reasoning? And this pregnant woman (Mel) is mad about the way Abby killed Joel with the golf club, but during a flashback cutscene, Mel also wanted to kill Tommy and Ellie too to leave no witnesses.. what? Are you serious? What are these characters? And Dina before this is talking about being a burden while being pregnant, Ellie even saying she is, but Mel is just.. good? She's not a burden at all and no one cares?

Final point, Abby finds Ellie after she had killed Abby's friends, including pregnant girl. Abby is in a position to kill them, has killed for less, and killed Joel who killed her dad. So.. why.. doesn't she? She doesn't kill Ellie, let's her go free. Why?

They did not do these characters justice. They ruined them. Only play the first game, skip this one.

When a game can make someone feel sadness, pain, guilt and eventually put into tears then they are doing something right. The quality of a story is not determined by whether you like it, especially when there is a lot of other players and media professionals who give quite high comments. It is completely OK to give a low score to the game that you dislike, but just do not call the game a junk, for it could really hurt the hearts of the gamers who love this game.

Making us play as Abby and killing Joel in the beginning of the game is insane. The story is so awful that I wasn’t even able to complete the game. I have never seen a game make a story and playable character based on a completely random npc from the previous game. The agenda that this game pushed will ruin games for years to come. I want to see the story of Joel and Ellie not some random lady who has ridiculous muscles for the apocalypse. There are no redeeming qualities from this game. Expand

The story and characters are an insult to not only the players but also the first game in the series. The game is VERY short (a couple hours) and has almost no real gameplay. The entire couple hour journey is just walking from one cutscene to the next doing your best to disregard the ugliest characters you've ever seen.

Avoid at all costs. I'm only giving this a 1/10 because

The graphics are as expected from naught dog . In matched . But the gameplay loop and story writing are something that feels like 7 years of solid waiting for this game have fallen short and left this game feeling like a side quest to a story that we will never see . The dynamic of what made the first game brilliant is gone . Killing off characters like it’s game of thrones . Putting a revenge story and making you play as a character not wanted by the fans . And no I don’t care about the whole agenda politics. Strong female leads like aloy from horizon zero dawn are unmatched and widely loved by fans . Setting the bar as you would say. But the writing given in last of us part 2 is just so lazy. And we don’t get to experience what made the first game so successful. The developer just used that success to create this absurd narrative like he is creating the wheel. This game is everything we never asked for . How sad that it’s come to this . But even if you don't like the story, as for visuals and mechanics it's the best game on ps4, not even red dead redemption 2 is that good (and that game looked stunning).

I wouldn’t bother with this game. The best thing to do is keep your money for the PS5.

Fans of the first game will be in for a spectacular ride as they step into the very familiar shoes of Ellie once again and take a deeper dive into the breathtaking world of the Last of Us. The gamplay is every bit as good as the first game while adding even more to love. Mobility has been greatly improved to make the game feel more fluid and really helps to define the differences between being in control of Joel and being in control of Ellie. There are also new skills to upgrade, weapons to find, and new craftables to aid in your journey. The story of the game is also spectacular. It feels like a clean continuation and a natural second half to the game that was so beloved by fans 7 years ago and brings all the emotions you'd expect with it. The world is just as alive as before and the characters make the world feel more full and give you even more to love. There is a lot that I want to say about the Last of Us Part 2 and it's story and characters but I don't want to spoil the game for anyone who may be reading this trying to decide if they want to purchase the game or not. Let me help. Buy the game. If you loved the first game and are interested in seeing where the story goes next then this is the game for you. It is a remarkable experience I would recommend to any fan of the series. Don't let the negative publicity or hate that you may have seen influence you. It's not true I promise you that. The first game in the series stole my heart and the second one had a lot to live up to and it 100% delivered so don't let anyone cheat you out of the experience that was this masterpiece of a game. Go in with an open mind and let the game tell you the story it wants you to see. You won't regret it. Expand

This game is the biggest freak in the history of the gaming world, first of all I want to make it very clear that I PLAYED the game, I AM NOT an Xbox fanboy and I AM NOT a bot, I would NEVER in my life imagine living this moment to see the company that I loved doing this with the fans themselves, INCOMPETENCE from beginning to end, Neil Druckmann you are NOT a god of game writing as you think you are, respect the fans, this game is made for them and not for you and your ideologies, Halley Gross you DO NOT serve to script a game, get out because you already destroyed a gigantic franchise and we don't want any more tragedy, unfortunately on June 19, 2020 we didn't just experience the death of Joel, a character we love so much and who dies in a ridiculous way, with the character taking actions that do not fit his personality, but also marks the beginning of the fall of ND, at least with the grotesque direction that the studio has been taking recently, I don't even know where to start with this bomb, on the technical side, it is undeniable the talent of the developers that the studio can be proud to say that they are part of, the visual quality is the best alongside Red Dead Redemption II that I have seen, the quality of sound is also excellent, the audio design of the shots, the breaking glass, the rain is exceptional, all this with the arrival of the new generation of consoles, will be overcome in a short time, what will remain in the future is the narrative, the gameplay follows the same scheme as the first game, without much innovation, but the game is so long and drawn out that after a few hours everything starts to getting tiring, , but none of that is what marks in narrative titles like this, but of course, the story, and my friends, is UNBELIEVABLE something as poorly written as the script for this game coming from a super developer and a super production of millions and millions of dollars, it is UNACCEPTABLE, it is disrespectful to the fans of the first game, HUNDREDS of HOLES of script, I will mention some of them here as an example, Ellie traveling around the USA twice after revenge and in the end giving back? Did she kill a rattlesnake coldly 10 minutes before forgiving the person who took everything from her life? Did Jesse and Ellie abandon a pregnant woman feeling sick inside a theater despite the 1 billion bills Ellie finds from people who died waiting for rescue? Couldn't they take her to Jackson and continue the hunt afterwards like the Abby who waited 4 years for her revenge? Did the pregnant Dina fall from a height of 5m, 6m and continue the journey normally? Abby let Ellie and Tommy live? Did it not occur to her that they could come after revenge in the same way that she herself did? Forcing us to feel something for Abby, that she has friends and such and a few hours later she kills dozens of WLF that the game itself tries to pass that are her friends? Yara having surgery with equipment that had been abandoned for 24 years and after half an hour getting into all the dirty Seattle water? What's the point for Lev and Yara to save a wolf? Why does Abby risk her life to get this equipment from the hospital for a seraph, since Joel, who saved her life, was not only content to kill, but also to torture? The convenience of Joel's script finding and saving Abby? Jesse dying worse than any NPC in the game? Tommy getting shot in the face and then showing up alive? Mel pregnant with a bigger belly than Dina's and normally participating in WLF activities, jumping, climbing, killing seraphites while Dina can't even move after a certain part of the game? Why did you try so hard to pass that Joel was a villain? Is Jerry the reincarnation of Jesus Christ who never did anything wrong in his life? Lev to go back to his camp even though he knew his mother wouldn't support him and Abby to go after him knowing about the war that was going to happen? Why wasn't Ellie's immunity exploited in this game? Where's any reference to characters like Sarah, Tess, Bill, Henry, Sam, even David? Wouldn't it be magical to have a scene of Joel taking Sarah to the park before the whole outbreak started? What did Joel do throughout his 20 years until he found Ellie? You DESTROYED ALL of the characters in the first game, MISCHARACTERIZED ALL of them, Joel and Tommy never let their guard down for an armed stranger the way it was, Ellie was a happy and outgoing girl now she looks depressed and distant, the feeling is that she would commit suicide at the end of the game, was that the intention? Tommy would never act like that **** with Ellie, they even separed Tommy and Maria, unfortunately it was 7 years of waiting and a game that SHOULD NOT EXIST, for me and for thousands this game is not canonical and it never will be, Abby is a PSYCHO, WE DO NOT LIKE HER and NO WE WANT TO PLAY WITH HER, very sad for ND and especially for her employees who worked EXCESSIVELY in a game as badly scripted as this one. I don't buy games for having good music but the first had that in spades. While I did enjoy the gameplay slightly more, it still felt like it was plagued by the problems of the first game: Bad AI, very repetitive stealth sections, too much QTE, skill tree system that doesn't do anything, and a couple other things. They did add some new things too, like unpreventable jump scares and some slightly annoying attempts to make it seem less linear. The pacing of the gameplay clearly saw some improvements thankfully, making it easier to progress. Characters were very hit or miss, and some of the acting felt weak. Where to start on the story. The pacing was god awful, I actively hated playing through a large portion of the game although I enjoyed the it mostly until around mid way through. The story tries to make you feel bad through cheap tricks, that are easy to see through. I understand the themes and ideas of revenge and violence that they were trying explore, but they did it in cheap ineffective, sometimes clearly emotionally manipulative ways. I wouldn't buy it, unless you don't care about the story all that much and enjoyed the gameplay of the first game. Expand

What bothered me the most was the ending, not only does Ellie not kill Abby but just lets her go.. but it was the fact that Ellie was literally left with nothing. Dina is gone who knows where, Joel is dead (and the way they killed him was TRASH), AND WHAT HIT ME GARD WAS THE FACT THAT ELLIE CANT EVEN PLAY THE GUITAR ANYMORE REALLY..SO SAD And of course I wish The writing went a different way I hated the writing at first but now watching the interview with Ashley explaining their technically wasn’t really a true villain in this game and you’re really all of them in the interview explaining the point of you and how to take away the plight really made me look at it different in put a higher score of this game because it made me not think about it too emotionally. but what I said in my original rating still stands specifically about wanting the part three PLEASE DO A PART lll Expand

It’s gorgeous, it’s fun at times but the structure of the story fails to execute a great revenge tale to the end. I would have been fine if this was only about Abbey and her journey to seek out revenge. It’s a shame the advertising focuses only on Ellie and Joel which is deceiving to the consumer and fan base. This is not the game of the generation but a missed opportunity for Naughty Dog. Too bad because I liked the first game a lot. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
