It blows my mind that they just decided to kill off a loved character in an extremely nasty way. I guess Neil tried to achieve the effect that GoT's Red Wedding had on people, but he failed miserably.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolutely incredible. That’s the only way I can describe this game. It provides a nuanced and thought provoking continuation of the first game’s ending that leaves players pondering the story for days. The sad truth of the story is that it revolves around Joel’s fateful decision to give Ellie a chance at life, but the way he did it basically makes it impossible for Ellie to find happiness. Every action has a consequence, and Joel’s atrocities against the fireflies ends up coming back to bite Ellie. At the end of the day, the game feels like you’re playing in an alternate reality where Joel made the wrong decision. The correct series of events seems to end with Ellie dying on the operating table and saving the world, but not all things have happy endings. To say that the characters didn’t progress well through this story is a flat out lie, because this story thoroughly felt like the place that the characters would naturally end up. Overall, it would be most fitting to package both games as a single story, because both feel so essential to each other. PLAY THIS GAME. It’ll make you feel like crap, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad game... it means it’s making you think. And that, my friends, is what all media should strive to do. Bravo Naughty Dog. Can’t wait to see what new IP or sequel you bake up next. Expand

I will not write about how amazing this game is (professional critics had already have enough details about it), instead I would like to said that something should be done with current rating system. May be it should be simplified just to "Like it" / "Don't like it" binary system, because de facto it works that way.

    1) Almost nobody tries to separate one factors from others (OK, you don't like plot, but you shouldn't immediately put zero for entire game for this: there are a lot of other factors and, for example, you would certainly look like a total dumb if you put "zero" for a graphic or open world detalization in AAA project like "The last of us".
    2) Nobody (and even professional critics sometimes) in modern time doesn't really understand and use rating as it should be: comparison of currently observed game vs all other games. How it is possible to rate a triple A project below some crappy product of unknown game designers?

So, in overall, my idea suggests, that either rating services should use simplified binary ratings, either they should ban everyone, whose ratings are totally busted.

The world of The Last of Us is a cruel, dangerous, and often exhilarating experience. Unfortunately the game is review bombed for its story. While there are several points throughout the story that the player may find disappointing, nothing seems forced or unreasonable. By no means does this game deserve any score lower than a 7/10 by an average player. By no means does this game deserve any score lower than a 7/10 by an average player. If you were fans of the first game please don’t hesitate to give this game a try. The sense of scope and exploration has increased tenfold and the result is a beautiful and intriguing environment. However, if you did not enjoy the first The Last of Us, it’s unlikely you will enjoy this sequel. That being said, story sequels like this generally improve upon the first game’s vision rather than completely altering the formula. In that sense this game has succeeded spectacularly. While there are some issues with game mechanics that I wish could be altered it does not detract majorly from the game experience. The game is not perfect, but it is not only playable but enjoyable. Anyone who gives this game a 0-5/10 is not doing an accurate job at a critical review. If you feel like you want to pick this game up, then you should. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all i am writing this review because of all the unwarranted criticism this game is getting.I thought if people write reviews without having played the game just because it is cool to hate this game, I can also write a review praising it for how good it is.
After playing this i did not know i actually wanted a sequel. I am absolutely glad of the direction it took because in this way it is even more unique and fresh than what it could've been if Naughty Dog went with a safer approach. This story is brutal and shocking. This is a clear departure from the easier to swallow formula of the first game which focused on a wonderful relationship while it still explored the dark depths of humanity that are revealed by the coming of the virus. This goes all the way into the darkest depths of character study. The plot is set in motion by Joel's death which comes very early into the game and while expecting it, it still managed to surprise me. This is a brutal undignified death that further explores the dark state of the world. It also launches Ellie's brutal revenge story in motion. The game departs from the Ellie we know from the first one. We see a more mature version of her and we observe as she slowly loses her established humanity piece by piece in her obsession with revenge . The game also wants you to see the game in this first half through her eyes antagonizing the group responsible for Joel's death making it easier to connect with Ellie's struggle. In the second half of the game we play as a new character named Abby who is responsible for brutally murdering Joel in the beginning of the game. I was intrigued by this narrative choice and I was curious to see if the game would be effective with such a twist in perception. It is in my opinion a brilliant design choice that further enhances the story suggesting the message that in such a depressing world it is all a matter of perspective. We see Abby's relationships and friendships akin to what we see in Ellie's part of the story. And as the game slowly shifts to Abby's perspective you start to see Ellie as the villain. All of this further enhances in my opinion the idea that the game tries to convey. It wants to depress you, make you feel desperate as if you are a part of the lifeless world that it represents. I can totally understand why some people cannot appreciate this shift of narrative because of the passion they had for the first game which still is from a narrative standpoint a masterpiece. I do not agree with the clearly fake reviews that nitpick at the game simply because it's cool using arguments such as an nonexistent political agenda that apparently is behind the game. I can also not understand the people who stopped playing after Joel died. So in conclusion this game is absolutely unique and fresh and further illustrates the power of immersion videogames have achieved. It is also a bleak character study that explores humanity's most primitive and overpowering desires

A gut-wrenching, hard to swallow masterpiece, but a masterpiece nonetheless.

Without revealing any spoilers, I will say that it is very sad to see so much misguided hate being thrown at this game, mostly by people who did not play it - and who never intended to play it, regardless of whatever leaks might have happened. They are missing out on possibly the best game of the generation.

It's a polarizing game, for sure. It is not afraid to take risks and does so willingly, challenging players to endure painful moments of hard to watch violence, which might - and will - alienate some people. I can definitely understand that some fans of Part I will feel disappointed by some story elements, but I cannot agree with those accusing it of being poorly written. It is meant to bother you. It is meant to not be a happy story in any way, and it is a daring, deep and misleadingly philosophical piece of narrative. Put simply, if you understand what the writers were going for, it could very well be the best narrative-focused videogame ever created. I know it is, for me.

It redefines the meaning of what it is to be a protagonist, and subverts both the hero and villain roles. It shoves human suffering in your face, time and time again, but does so in such a way that it never becomes tactless or gratuitous, and it never pushes the boundaries of taste. It is most definitely hard to swallow - simply put, it's a story that demands the player to have a strong stomach. It treats you like an adult. As it should.

With story out of the way, it must be mentioned how absurdly detailed everything about this game is. From subtle facial expressions that denounce nuanced emotions, like jealousy, fear, anger, contempt, surprise, hesitance and many more, to tiny sound effects you would never expect to hear in a videogame, along with some of the most ridiculously and painstakingly detailed environments and level design I have ever seen.

Gameplay is also masterfully crafted here. Combat is much, much more fluid and seamless than Part I's sometimes clunky mechanics, exploration feels fresh and absorbing, even after dozens of hours of play, and each new area has a distinct and purposeful feel to it, making every stage feel like it adds weight to the experience. It's remarkable how a story-driven game can surpass the 30 hour mark without ever feeling like it's dragging for too long. The addition of a jump button may look like an obvious element for a 2020 game, but it does open up new exploration possibilities that Part I never achieved, making Ellie feel much more agile and capable than Joel ever did.

In terms of characters, be prepared to meet one of the most diverse and fully realized cast of virtual people ever designed. With The Last of Us Part II, gone are the days of the same old caucasian male protagonists and equally generic supporting cast. Gender, sexuality, and race are all carefully balanced and presented in such a way that it makes the characters rich and lifelike, while making it so that these subjects are rarely the main focus of the game. When they are, though, they serve to deepen the selection of themes approached by the game, which make us draw comparisons to our own, infected-free real world.

In the final hours of the game, I realized that The Last of Us Part II triggered emotions that I have never felt in any piece of work - videogame or otherwise - in my life. Joy, charm, pain, anger, fear, repulse, nausea, surprise, disagreement and satisfaction are some of the feelings provoked by the story, with a few more nuanced ones in key moments.

If you want a game that will take you on a punishing, emotionally draining, visually incredible, artistically unmatched, adult and, yes, bleak experience, The Last of Us Part II has much to offer you. Do not let the fact that the story doesn't match our seven-year-in-the-making fan fictions detract you from what is quite possibly one of the best games ever crafted.

There is so much more I would like to say, but I will refrain from doing so, in order to prevent spoilers and for the sake of brevity (and character limit).

Thank you, Naughty Dog, for one of the most unforgettable experiences I have had the privilege to live through. This game, this world and its characters will stay with me for years to come, and I'm still reliving the story in my mind as I make my way through the painful first hours of the story on my New Game +.

At first I was angry at Abby for killing Joel, and then I see Abby's reasoning for her actions... and I just, couldn't help but to feel bad for her. Joel's past finally came back to bite him. I get that: "Abby should get her consequences! She gets away with killing Joel and gets everything she wants!" What I have to say to that is this: Joel, Tommy and Ellie kill like 99% of the people Abby cared about, and plus Abby also has a kid, Lev, to look after. If you know Joel and Ellie then you'd know they wouldn't kill someone and leave a kid hopeless and in danger because their protector/parent is dead. Gameplay: 10/10 - I just had so much fun, the tension, the suprises, the bad guys having names (got kinda annoying, but if you sneak around it won't be annoying as much.)

Story: 9/10 - there's so much plot twists that make me not know what's going on. Like: "Wait, should I still be angry at Abby? Yes, she killed Joel... but then again Joel did kill like 80% of the people Abby loved." **** like that have me on my feet and I live for it. I love when writers can have my emotions all over the place. Characters: 8/10. I'd rate it higher, but there wasn't enough character background on the characters that help with Abby in the beginning of the game. I also wanna see more of Ellie and Dina, Joel's character development was **** great. It's like Ellie is his daughter and he wasn't afraid to show he loves her, but still scared to say it with his own words. If that makes sense.

The ending hits hard. It's definitely something to really think about before saying it's good. There's not much I wanna say, I guess this is where I say this then, go pick up a copy! If $80 CAD is too much to spend right now then wait until a discount comes up for the game. The story will still be here no matter what.

Then you are forced into playing as Abby.. with beyond boring flashbacks that you have to play through ..the game just drags on and on after.. the game tries to be "ground breaking" in making you question who the real "bad guy" is...but it doesn't , because they are both bad people .. they really shove LGBTQ down you're throat here .. we all know Elle is a lesbian from the first game , but the person who kills Joel just so happens to be a lesbian , who befirends a transexual ? Their sexuality has zero to do with the game at all and it's never really addressed other than when an old bigot says something to Elle.. seems like they went for shock value , it's all they really have going for the game . With Uncharted 4, it’s DLC and the DLC for the Last of Us, you could see the slow shift to identity politics over good story. But I still gave it a second chance and what can I say? Neil was right, context is everything. This game really makes you feel for every single character in the story whether good, or bad. I know a lot of outlets have been saying that the story is just too depressing and has no moments of levity, but I would be lying if I said that I didn't cry out of sheer happiness a few times. Although there were two story moments that I didn't agree with personally, I can see why they were in the game and I absolutely respect their inclusion. The ending too was something that I was hesitant of at first, but they even managed to pull that off while also giving it a much more understated feel then part one's ending. Now, onto everything that isn't story. The music in this game is fantastic, with Gustavo once again hitting the mark on every track (with unbroken being my personal favorite) while Mac Quayle is brought in to work on more combat centric pieces. And i must say, he does a wonderful job. If you were a fan of the gameplay of the first game (like myself) then you will love what they've done here. Both Ellie and Abby feel much better to control then Joel. With Ellie in particular feeling much more agile then any of the other characters. Ontop of that the weapons themselves feel somewhat improved (although they control quite similar to the first games), the upgrade system has been greatly expanded, with tonnes of new perks and paths to take. Plus as an added bonus companions can now actually aim, shoot people, and hide too. When in combat the game is something else entirely, you weave your way through increasingly bigger encounter maps with more and more enemies until, you inevitably get spotted. This is when it gets really interesting. I personally played the game on grounded which led to combat encounters being scary and adrenaline inducing. I can't even count how many times I would get out of combat and still feel my heart racing and adrenaline burning off. The combination of the combat music, gunplay, and enemy ai leads to something that is even more tense then the first game. With my personal favorite combat moment being whenever I tried to snipe someone with a bow. As the sound effects and vibrations of the controller really made it feel the tension in the bow string and like this thing i'm holding could snap any minute. So overall, I have this game a 9/10, great combat, (mostly) great story, but it does end up dragging on for a few more hours then it needed to. Expand

The Last of Us was a title that made me love the PS3 as a console. The immersive and somewhat grounded world, the characters who had been affected by this world, and an intense, emotional story built off of their development on a journey through it. It was memorable, beautiful and stayed with me for very long after playing.

Enter The Last of Us Part 2, a game that carries us back into this same world with some familiar faces making an appearance. For starters, the game stands out as one of the most graphically beautiful experiences you can get on console today. The lighting, the incredible density of areas you explore, the quality of material detail, and like the first game, some incredible facial animation work with real acting performances that make you feel like you’re watching real humans interact with each other. It isn’t that often i will willingly ignore the sprint button and walk around a game world, just taking it all in, but this is one in which i regularly felt the need to do it. The best part being all of this is at a very solid and smooth frame rate too.

The game also sounds incredible, the sonic atmosphere is perfectly balanced with a great dynamic range. The music is also brilliant, again, and perfect for the dark, barren, and often hopeless world it embellishes, the main themes being used sparingly at the main story beats to add to the impact of these moments. I think the most important thing to take from this amazing visual and sonic fidelity, is how immersive this game is, and i think that mainly comes down to the great job the dev team have done creating this extreme, complex and believable world.

The gameplay is very much similar to the first, but refined and improved in many ways too. I personally really enjoy the main gameplay mechanics, searching for crafting parts to ready yourself for combat, and then finding it’s often just enough to get you through said encounters. I found the ‘moderate’ difficulty option to be more than fair, with a few parts that i found particularly challenging, but occasional difficulty spikes, although rare, did happen. Again though, these could be worked around with a few attempts and some thought (or spamming with the heavy weapons and some luck).
The enemy variation is much better this time around, with more infected (some new more shocking examples too), some animals and more humans with different backstories and reasons for what they do. These little differences make encounters feel unique and more challenging strategically. There were unfortunately some moments, especially in the latter part of the game, in which the encounters maybe started to feel a bit much, and more like something from the Uncharted series. It felt a little out of place in a game series that usually aims to be slightly more grounded, stealth based and not the hyped up ‘one man army’ style.

However, i think I’m not alone when i say the most important thing in this game is the story and its characters. Unfortunately, i would say this is a bit of a mixed bag, and there’s a lot of thinking to do after completing it. The characters, particularly Ellie and Dina, are very well written and felt grounded, relatable and real. The cutscenes are incredible, and a few very beautiful moments occur in which, very much like the first, you will be left a little tearful. I generally really enjoyed the game and think its a very interesting and profound story experience, but in a way, there are moments i really did not enjoy. In a sense, i know this is intentional (which is somewhat interesting in itself), but with it being a game, it feels a little odd to be forced to do certain things, and then made to feel bad about not enjoying doing them. In fact, its that divisive and split, there was one particular moment where i was considering putting the controller down and calling it a day, because i didn’t want to do what i had to. It is completely understandable to me that people will not like this story, and some big fans of the first may even struggle to complete it, but i think i do also respect Naughty Dog in some ways for breaking the mould and doing something extraordinarily risky. It is a game that will stay with you, but not at all for the same reasons as the first did, and not necessarily good reasons. Some very important new characters are introduced throughout the game, and some of these new characters are not handled in a very good way, which leaves you struggling to relate and care about them when it comes time to. Also, the game is somewhat split into two main parts, built from two main perspectives, and again, i’m not sure whether this was a great idea (although it does mean you get to meet more characters and see more of the world, which is a positive thing. I am all for world building).
The game is very fleshed out, deep and detailed though, so you can easily put 20-35+ hours into one play through, depending on your play style.

What a disappointment. The story shoots itself in the foot in the prologue and right when your getting used to the limp it pulls the rug right from underneath you half-way through and pins you on the ground for 10 hours.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolute failure of storytelling. If I were to rate this game purely off of storytelling then I'd give it a 0/10, but the graphics were undeniably amazing so I'll give it a 2.

Now, let me elaborate. In a nutshell, the entire foundation of The Last of Us is the father-daughter relationship between Joel and Ellie and how they grew and developed together throughout the course of the game. It was the glimmer of hope for Joel's second chance at having a daughter, it was Ellie finally finding someone who cared after her and never left her, the theme of the light in the darkness shown through Joel and Ellie's relationship that made The Last of Us so amazingly good.

The Last of Us Part II then proceeds to take a massive crap on everything the game was founded upon, and not only kills the beloved main protagonist Joel in the beginning, but also completely rushes it with absolutely no build up at all. It resembled that of a 12 year old forcing an amateur plot point into a story that just doesn't fit. After the death of Joel the entire game is a series of over the top violence with the only intent of hateful revenge, thus making you begin to extremely dislike Ellie by the end of the game. The ending gives no pay-off and there's no character development at all. If anything the characters regressed. That "light in the darkness" theme of the first game is completely ripped out of the second one, thus butchering everything the first game stood for. To top it all off, the only Joel and Ellie interactions we witnessed were in flashbacks, which ended with Ellie hating Joel and telling him she can't ever forgive him. Again, crapping all over the original games foundation.

The feminist/LBTQ agenda is also very apparent in this sequel, and it seems obvious to me that Neil Druckmann traded out quality storytelling for an in-your-face preachy message, and used The Last of Us as his soap box.

This story ends with no hope, no redemption, no more Joel and Ellie, no love, nothing. It's not even bitter-sweet, it's just bitter. The first game ended bitter-sweet, but it was perfectly executed. This sequel felt rushed even though they had 7 years to perfect it.

If anything this sequel shouldn't have had anything to do with revenge, but should have picked back up where it left off with the lie that Joel told Ellie at the end of the first game, and became a story of Ellie learning to forgive Joel and further strengthening the bond between the two.

Like I said, this doesn't feel like a story, but feels like Neil Druckmann's soap box. An absolute failure in storytelling and a disappointment to fans.

But I think Joel deserved better. Video game industry needs to know that we usually get connected with characters and their choices and last thing we want to see is for that character to die. I don't care about all this agenda thing going around on internet. Don't care main character is lesb or trans, till the time it's a good game with a good story. Last of us 2 compared to Last of us 1 is just plain garbage. I can't believe that both developed by the same studio. Ellie goes on rampage, kills everyone, just to let Abby go, that was like a 10/10 facepalm moment for me. Writer needs to sit down and think what exactly he is trying to communicate with this story. Only character I cared about was Ellie, writer completely failed to make me feel anything about any other character. And why on earth we are forced to play Abby, after she butchered Joel, last thing we need is to play as her. I just can't believe that this game is coming from Naughty Dog, one of the best studio we have. How could they even think this is a great story. It has so many flaws. Let's hope Naughty Dog does better with next IP cuz I am sure LOU IP is dead now.

Whilst playing as Abby I was really close to dropping off. The moment when i was hitting Ellie to death i thought this was it. I didn't wanna play it anymore. I just continued because i wanted where it was trying to get at. The last part of the game has to be the best sequence in gaming history. The inbetween showing Joel's and Ellie's relationship going through such tension was like a Greek tragedy. Neill Druckmann was 100% committed to his vision. It's a pinnacle of art. Nothing less. I don't think we'll ever get to experience something this emotionally strong in a game. The game ain't about revenge. It is about survival. Mental survival. Physical survival. Survival at any cost. I'm not saying anything about the gameplay nor the graphics because it can't get any better on ps4 it's the best we've ever had in this generation. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Light spoilers This game is brilliant from start to finish. It’s emotional and brutal. It pushes the player to feel things and it is sometimes uncomfortable to play but the story is so engaging. You’re often left wondering “who’s the good guys and who’s the bad guys here” and the answer is up to you and your perspective. All the characters have reasons for their actions and Naughty Dog allows the player to act them out, we see different view points that have us going back and forth on who’s “side” we’re on. The violence is often criticised but in this hyper violent, mostly lawless post apocalyptic world, it’s all the characters really know. The lighter moments of the game are beautiful, picking up a guitar as Ellie and listening to her play Take on Me is one of my favourite parts of the game. Visiting the museum and aquarium are a welcome relief from the tense gameplay you’re often faced with. Naughty Dog has gone to great lengths to make The Last Of Us Part II accessible. They want you to play the game, to experience the story and if that means you play it on very light mode with various gameplay toggles on, such as auto aim and invisible while prone, then that’s ok! Naughty Dog clearly want as many people as possible to experience this game and I can’t recommend it enough. Expand

Story is at the front and center of a series like The Last of Us, and well-written stories can be finicky and difficult to create a satisfying follow up for. But a story should at least be experienced in it's entirety before it gets written off as garbage. A lot of people who saw the leak decided to review bomb this game months before release. Actual living people who call themselves game critics or reviewers and have large following said things like "This game is so bad, I'm not even going to play it." when the news about the leak was trending, a sentiment which should be seen as entirely inadequate from the perspective of someone who reviews games for a living. Clearly that sentiment has lasted through to release, and review bombers were in full force within hours of the launch.
Thing is, while this isn't the story many people had envisioned (whatever that means when you knew nothing about the follow-up plot to begin with), it's not even bad. I do admit it takes awhile to get going, I didn't really like how fast things happened at the beginning, but I also didn't discredit an entire games worth of storytelling based on the first few moments. I really like where the story leaves off, and I like that they've established that Joel and Ellie aren't the Nathan Drake of this series, it's a harsh world they live in and everyone has to bite the dust someday.

...The Last of us part 2 is not canon for me. It pulls the fantastic first part into the dirt. I'm really disappointed. Never again. I hope Corey Balrog makes better deciosions then Naughty Dog. What a disappointment.

The reason many people straight up end up hating on the game is due to the fact Joel dies in the first act itself but as we (ellie) continues our pursuit of vengeance the further we go the more it hurts us and everybody around us. By the time we reach aquarium and kill pregnant mel thats when we-the character really start to question our actions.
Then the clock resets to Seattle day 1 and we play as the character which seems the antagonist to us from the beginning act but as we deep dive into her story we realise she got her revenge but that didn't stop her from having nightmares and in the process she loses everyone close to her. In the end it's lev who stops her from killing Dina ending the cycle of violence.
In the end Ellie finally realises that revenge is just not worth it but her pursuit of it throughout the events of the story has a cost. The cost being she ends up alone, her worst fear comes to life but she is finally at peace with herself and Joel.

The attention to detail in every design element is unbelievable. The actions and responses of haters online are not only juvenile but morally bankrupt, I feel immensely sorry for the studio team for the love and creativity invested in developing the game for years only to be met with this response. As someone who *actually played and finished the game* but is also an avid fan of the first game and it’d characters, I say with confidence that this is a revolutionary title that is worth your time. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s hard for me to express just how completely and utterly disappointing this game is - not just as at the gratuitous violence that serves no purpose other than to embellish trite narrative themes, but at the audacity and self indulgence of the writers who think their work is some form of sophisticated art. And it’s all the more disappointing given the brilliance of the first game.
Credit is first due to the passionate workers who created a technically stunning game. This is one of the best looking PS4 games to date, and a taste of what next generation graphics have in store. I know creating this game came at a huge cost – both emotionally, mentally, and physically – to the artists, animators and developers at naughty dog. We’re all aware of the stories behind the awful working conditions at this studio and the high attrition rate for employees/contractors. If only the director of this game was half as concerned with the working conditions of his vulnerable workers as he was with using a videogame to promote militant feminist power fantasies (see the comically muscular Abby and the pregnant women scaling heights and fighting). Systemic oppression comes in many forms; management at this studio should focus on making their environment a better place to work in for all before taking on the tall order of ridding the world of its social ills.
A game of this kind lives and dies by its story. The first game was beloved because it was a well-told story. It had relatable and interesting characters, and you were able to see their growth. It wasn’t a story designed to “subvert our expectations”, and it didn’t need to be. None of that can be said for this story. By and large, the story is trite and surprisingly juvenile in contrast to the prequel. Yes, violence begets violence. Yes, none of these characters are completely innocent in the broken world which they inhabit. So what, exactly?
The game starts off early with the death of Joel. He is brutally murdered by this new character called Abby (whom he initially saved during their first encounter), while Ellie is pinned down to watch in horror. This happens in the beginning of the game, without much context. For many, Joel is a beloved character and rightfully so. We come to love Joel by design through the first game. Having seen him lose his daughter in the introduction, we empathize with his struggle to find something to live for. We understand his decision to rescue Ellie after that long journey, who was taken unconscious to be operated on and killed. Let me make this abundantly clear to the director of this game: there is no moral basis that would justify killing a child without their consent, and children by definition cannot consent to such an act – regardless of what results such acts might bring about. Joel’s act to save her is not morally ambiguous, unless you’re morally depraved.
Joel, however, is made to answer for the sins of his past in the dumbest way possible. Leaving aside questions of morality, we’re supposed to somehow believe that a veteran with decades of experience in this world would somehow rescue strangers, follow them to their encampment outnumbered, and then tell them his name. This is the same Joel who could spot an ambush while driving a mile away. This is the same Joel who wouldn’t rescue a stranger in the introduction of the first game. The writing is inconsistent and beyond amateurish, and coupled with the unceremonious way they killed off the leading character, I really struggle to understand the creative decisions made here. That’s not to say there isn’t a right way to kill Joel. You can kill off a strong character without making them a bumbling idiot (see Gus in Breaking Bad). It’s obvious that Neil Druckmann had neither the talent nor skill to fully realize such a scenario. Instead, the director is more pre-occupied with inserting a character into the game bearing his likeness just to spit on Joel’s body. It’s no wonder videogames aren’t taken more seriously as art.
So this introduction is what sets the stage for Ellie’s revenge story. And it, too, is not a compelling story in the least bit. She kills hundreds and hundreds of people, brutally, I might say, only to find that she suddenly forgives Abby, because that’s what Joel would have wanted. She ends up losing everything, including her loved ones and two fingers, and the player comes to find that the dozens of hours they spent playing the game were all in vain. Oh, but you see, you didn’t realize that violence only begets more violence and nobody is innocent in this world. Don’t you feel bad for killing the dog we made you kill? The writers actually believe we would be impressed by the 9th grade attempt at moral philosophy. It’s such a miserable, nihilistic, and pointless story that serves no purpose, I can see why the studio refrains from using the word “fun".

This is a game surrounded by controversy. First there was the leaks, with everybody hating on it without even playing it. Then a article about Naughty Dog’s crunch time. By Naughty Dog’sThis is a game surrounded by controversy. First there was the leaks, with everybody hating on it without even playing it. Then a article about Naughty Dog’s crunch time. After all that, there was the game itself with LGBTQ+ representation, graphic violence and its plot. While I don’t think this is a flawless game, I do think this is one of the best games out there. By Naughty Dog’s standards, this has the best animations and graphics I’ve ever since in a game, which helps to really immerse the player into that world and feel the emotions that the actors are conveying. The gameplay while not innovative, improves in every single part of it’s predecessor, always staying fresh with new weapons, and new upgrades for them and your character. The set pieces and the objectives of the story also keeps you on track. And since I mentioned it, let’s talk about the story.
It’s hard talking about it without going into spoilers but I’ll do my best. Ellie’s descent into pure obsession for revenge is a experience I’ll never forget. Emotional, stressful and tiring, I got so involved that I had to pause sometimes to breath and to assimilate what was happening. You will feel miserable, dirty and left alone in a unforgiving and chaotic world that doesn’t care about its characters. But this doesn’t mean its perfect. The structure the story follows can be messy, with flashbacks and flashbacks in flashbacks that gives a feeling of “dragged on” that in a roughly 30 hours campaign is not good. But you have to go through it all. You have to experience it from beginning to the end. Everything will make sense when the credits roll. All of the hatred the characters feels spills out from the screen and hits you, tears you apart. Like I said before, you will feel tired, stressed and overwhelmed. And that’s the point. This is not a game about love like the first one, which is easy emotion to connect with. This is downward spiral into hate. The gameplay matches that with its grotesque, brutal violence. You feel every hit, every gunshot, every explosion. Everything is intertwined.
Unfortunately, the game released in a time that hatred and stress is everywhere. BLM, Coronavirus, political crisis. And while the finale of The Last of Us Part 2 ends bleakly, it also ends with a positive message: hate and violence leads to nowhere. Yes, this is not a new message and seems like an obvious one. But remind yourself, we are in 2020 and people kill each other because of their skin color, because of their sex preference, because of their race...
This is a powerful game and one I’ll never forget. Be safe, take care and wash your hands.

As the game progresses, a few less than enjoyable moments take place and the main theme of the game is revealed. The next 10 or so hours, the gameplay and story actual becomes very exciting and engaging, the pace climbs to what feels like the climax and then.. you are brought back and all that building fizzles away. For the next 10 hours of the game you are forced to push yourself through one of the most tedious character arks of any game i have ever played. All combat had zero anxiety or stress as there is no incentive to want to survive. By the end of it you are forced to destroy everything you cherished from the first game. After all that you have to experience the longest finales of any game (seriously think lord of the rings extended edition level of ending) only to be left with zero closure, zero replay value and a sad feeling of waste as the game managed to prove multiple times that it could have been great. I dont know if it was laziness or an attempt to be extra hipster but all i do know is after waiting 7 years for this, i wont be waiting a second for TLOU3 Expand

Graphically, this game is a masterpiece. Naughty dog has garnered a reputation for polish and detail in their games and this is no exception. Fantastic attention to detail and unbelievably fluid animations. This is the first game I have played where i felt so strange to go sprinting and jumping everywhere purely because the level of realism is so high that it felt off when the characters didn't act like actors in a film. Every location and area has its own characteristics and little details, and there's never a bland or repetitive scene. 10/10

The story is leagues ahead of other games in the same genre but that's to be expected from a narrative experience. The progression and decisions of the characters are certainly not objective but every action is understandable. Juxtapositions and relationships between characters initially come off as somewhat overplayed and predictable, but as the narrative plays out the characters' development and interactions consistently keep the player invested and keep the story unpredictable. 8/10

The gameplay experience takes everything that was done well in the original and both improves and compounds on it. I chose to play on the 'Hard' on my first playthrough and felt that items and ammunition could have been more scarce, but understand that I'm more attuned to save on and hoard resources instead of use them regularly like many players. My second playthough on the hardest difficulty had me feeling more challenged, and somewhat reminded me of classic survival horror games; a feeling I'd been sorely missing, making me love the game even more. Depending on how you play, the gameplay can pace down the story structure and damage the player's immersion a little, but that issue felt minor and was forgotten about seconds later every time it came up. 9/10

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
