Finished the game with 50+ hours, the basic gameplay is same as part1, i mostly play with stealth style, i wish there is more improvement on that like dragging bodies etc, however the level design have improved lot, much more open ended especially early level design, but i wish there is more path to arrive a destination instead of forced to go through certain way. After finishing this game, all I can say is that it's just another AAA game.

Graphics: Absolutely amazing if you've been living under a rock for the past 5 years. It's expected with today's technology for a high budget game. Mechanics: Just little improvement from the TLOU, jumping, and crawling, which has been around since the start of video games. Gameplay: I admit I got hooked

Gameplay: I admit I got hooked with the guitar. Stealth is just a good experience, stabbing people on the back just gives another level of joy. Cause you can never do that in real life unless you're psychotic. The only bad thing, I can say for gameplay, the AI's are a little bit terrible, just a little bit.

Storytelling: Nuh, I don't wanna talk about it. It depends on the gamer's perspective, whether they like the story or not. I won't force to your throat that I felt betrayed by this outing. It's your own appreciation of the game that matters. Whether you enjoyed it or not, it's yours to decide not mine.

    Conclusion:
It's a fun game, but not a great game, in my perspective. It's overrated, in my opinion, and it's also over hated due to the expectation from the last game. It's playable and you can get a lot of good time from this game.

    PS:
I immediately traded the game after I finished it.

The animations and the graphics are top notch. The gameplay is mediocre at best. But the story is far worse than I even imagined after the leaks. And the SJW propaganda (which is super brutal, btw) is not even the bad part. The writing is so trash it's not even funny... What a disappointment!

The last of us part 2 was my most anticipated game for 2020, I've pre-ordered the game despite the leaks and people backlash on the game and naughty dog's team.
After playing the game the first hour was very intense and full of excitement and get you hooked into the story but the rest of the game is pure disappointment.
I've already finished the game and i regret every penny i paid for

Forget about LGBTQ hate and dumb people hating it for no sense, I really hate games who make things like that just for no reason, but this game don’t make this, the relationship between Ellie and Dina is so real, amazing and lovely.
Imagine if a lunatic had killed your father in cold blood, who was trying to discover the cure of humanity? Imagine if you had some issues with your father figure and in the next day you see him getting killed by a lunatic woman with a golf club? That’s a damn heavy heartfelt motivation.
You’ll never find another experience like The Last Of Us Part 2.
    Gameplay:
I’d never played a game too immersive like that, the stealth is so good and I felt so sad when I messed up the run letting an enemy see me.
The gunfight is incredible, you can feel the shots getting out of the gun, the aim system is so realistic, you can’t just blast everyone like a f***ing Resident Evil S.T.A.R.S. super soldier.
The direct confrontation is the best I’ve ever seen, so satisfying, you can feel it with all the variety of animations and all the realism and violence.
Good variations of guns and weapons, including upgrades like in the first game. Good crafting system too.
Different than the first, now you can jump and crouch, and that works fantastic for people like me who likes to be stealth (but trust me, is so much fun to just confront the enemies directly).
The difficult of the game is fine, I think I would like to have less items in the scenarios because that turns the game a little easier, but the AI is something that I’ve never seen, the behavior of the enemies is so unpredictable and real, that’s real intimidating.
The puzzles are fine considering that’s not a game about that.
If you like exploration of huge scenarios…that’s your game, sometimes felt like an open world game, insane level design, this is one thing that ND knows how to do, amazing scenarios, I just got excited to search everywhere for notes and collectibles, so fun.
The scary parts are my favorite ones of gameplay, I just jumped every time with Stalkers and the biggest boss of the game is really intimidating and scary.
The graphics are the best of these generation, facial expressions in cutscenes and in game are really stunning and the best part is the animations, the interactions between Ellie with scenarios and enemies, all her moves and interactions mixed with the beautiful graphics makes a really important role on getting the player immersed and impacted through the game, you can see and feel the care of Naughty Dog on these little things.
Sometimes you gonna fell uncomfortable doing bad, violent and stupid things that corroborates with the narrative. All the suffer, all the sadness, all the sense of vengeance, this game is so much more than that, the feeling inside all the violence in both stories, it’s like a roller coaster of emotions and feelings, you can feel all that and understand just playing the game.
The story is the main point, and that’s where the game really got me.
That's just different than any other game you've ever seen, unique and audacious.
I don’t understand why people are getting so much hate for this, maybe they got the point of the first game wrong, but a lot of people is just being mean.
Joel is not a hero and Abby is not a Villain. They’re people in an apocalypse, just that, that’s the point.
The parts of Abby, for me, is so incredible and important for this game.
I don’t feel like ND wanted to make us “sympathize” with Abby, because she is a terrible person, her friends are the worst, I think that’s the point.
I just think the intention was to bring us a different perspective of all that, to see the other side, to show us the violence, not just trough Ellie and Joel’s journey, but in different relations too, to show us human’s decisions and consequences, Joel’s decisions and consequences, I don’t know if what Joel did in the end of first game was right or wrong, I just know that maybe, if I was him in the same situation, I would do the same, that’s the fact that made me love Joel, cause he is human, not a hero who saves the little girl from the bad firefly villains, but the old man who cannot lose another child.
The most incredible things happens through the journey, the development of Ellie through the game is the deeper and this game made her my favorite character of all time. You gonna fell on your skin everything that Ellie faces.
The end of the game is so good like(maybe better than)the first one, everything makes sense in the end and you can feel how heavy, hard and emotional that journey was seeing all the consequences that this circle of violence made in these two characters lives, showing us what vengeance coasts and sometimes, when you reach something that you’re really looking for, you don’t fell…nothing.
    The Naughty Dog’s Masterpiece.

First of all the graphics in this game is topnotch wow!I had to stop once in a while just to look at the views, the snowy mountains, the falls, the flowing water, the grass, everything in this game is so crisply made and so detailed. You can clearly see the character's emotions in their faces. It's just breathtaking. The gameplay is just alright. The same with the first one with some added features like dodge and you can finally crawl now(thank god). You can also throw ropes and break windows to get to new areas which is a good addition for it can at least keep your mind running what to do next. The sound of this game is absolutely beautiful too. When I first throw a brick to break that window, the sound of a breaking glass is just so good as it shatters and hits the floor, just downright earcandy(if that even makes sense). Then comes the story that ruined it all.Naughty Dog forgot a very important thing.Majority of the fans if not all wanna buy this game because of the story, not the gameplay, not the graphics. It's what made the first one such a masterpiece.I'm not homophobic or have issues with LGBTs or having to watch a sex scene of a man and a woman whose muscles are way bigger than him(I was actually laughing the whole time while they're doing it)or whatever agenda you're trying to push.I don't care about any of that. I only care about the story which you ruined so badly and poorly written. They made Tommy and Joel complete idiots in this sequel.Tommy gave his name to a complete stranger and even invited them to resupply back at their base, worse is even Joel gave his name too to these strangers. When I first saw it I was like wait what?Is this even Joel and Tommy? It's so uncharacteristic of them to be careless and stupid like that. It's okay to change a character's fundamental trait,Squall for example being a loner, but it was shown throughout the game why he was like that and what changed him and how in the end he became more open to people. Joel and Tommy did not have that it was a straight up extreme character 360 with no explanation at all. That's just lazy story writing right there. After that the game just became an ordinary lame revenge plot which was poorly written too WTF! Abby killed someone you dearly loved and your friends, now you have a chance to give them justice and guess what? She bites off two of your fingers, then suddenly have a rush of conscience(even after killing women and dogs) then let's her go. How in the world would you even think that that's a good idea of a story? In the movie industry that could win you bajillion of awards but guess what? It's a **** videogame!!!! Expand

While watching the credits roll out I understand why now; It's because I missed Joel so much, I kept remembering him and all the beautiful scenes with him, just like Ellie did during the entire experience, reading her diary makes a great difference, so with this in mind, it wouldn't be possible without having to see what Abby experienced so you can have a broader view of all that happened and why, still this does not absolve her of anything, if it were my choice I would definitely drown her, but its not, and Ellie really made the right choice because she saw Joel at the end, she felt all his love and released all the anger she had inside, she burst into tears, something she didn't do during the entire experience, she was just tired of it all, just as we were, I was so stressed the whole game, and then happy and then angry, and then stressed again, and for a game to bring you all this emotions, oh man, that deserves praise, I won't even talk about the gameplay It's just a beauty, organic, smooth, brutal and gratifying. To the Naughty Dog team — you’ve done a wonderful job with this game. Don’t let these naysayers tell you otherwise. This is a masterpiece of a video game and it will ultimately be remembered as that.

For those of you who are too close-minded to comprehend the complexity of moral relativity, or too insecure about your sexuality to accept, without judgement, the sexual preference of another human being, you still have a lot of growth to do. You should put more effort into progressing as a human and less effort into criticizing the hard work of people who obviously have accomplished, both professionally and personally, more than you.

The story didn't take the direction fans wanted, and many are upset. Still, a score of 0 is ridiculous, and for me a score of 10 is a bit much. It's a very good game, though it's not perfect.

Pros: Amazing graphics (seriously, I can't think of many games that look better); solid--but not perfect--narrative. Mostly, the story is good, though there are a few drawn out bits that I didn't think were great. The overall atmosphere that Naughty Dog is able to create with the experience is fantastic, though.

Cons: The game has moments that feel a little too repetitive for my taste (i.e., clear area, collect things, wash/rinse/repeat); while the narrative works, at times it is a little too heavy-handed and maybe a tad cliche; for me, the gameplay itself is fine, but nothing special (I've seen some people say it's amazing and some say they hate it--to me, it gets the job done, but that's about it).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've never been so emotionally traumatized by a game. For days after beating it, I've felt the same emotions I've felt after a bad breakup or after a funeral. I'm not being hyperbolic, this is the most devastating piece of art I've ever experienced. I don't know if I hate it, I don't know if I love it. All I know is I've never had this strong of an emotional reaction to any game, any movie, any album, or any book. As a huge fan of storytelling in general, I think this is extremely risky, bold, and challenging. As a Last of Us fan, I feel attacked and brutalized. If the theme of the first game is "Not being able to let go", then this game is the complete opposite. This story is asking us to let go OF The Last of Us, as it asks Ellie to let go.

This isn't the game I wanted, but honestly, it isn't anything I ever could have been prepared for. I think after a long, long time, this could either be one of my all time favorite games, or hell, maybe even a least favorite. I don't know. I just hope that people who REALLY are hating this, try to look at it from more than just one angle, which is the whole point of this story. I'm not asking you to like it or love it, but try to understand what the game is trying to do, at the very least.

I can understand some of the criticisms about this game's story, but I can't help but get engrossed in its narrative when looking at the bigger picture.

Before diving into the story, I'll quickly get everything else out of the way by saying that the combat, visuals, and score are all more than serviceable at their worst but outstanding at their best. The combat and exploration does overstay its welcome at times to the point where the game feels almost bloated but it still works wonderfully to help understand just what these characters are going through.

I want to try my best to not spoil anything about the story, so I'll start by saying what kind of story this ultimately is:

The story of TLOU2 is about forgiveness but disguises itself as revenge. When you begin the game and start Ellie's journey, everything feels obvious, you know that the person who started this is bad and you need to get revenge for what they've done. But as you play more, you start to see just how many layers there are to what you're doing and how nothing is as black-and-white as it seems, and by the end you understand how selfish acts only hurt everyone - most importantly yourself. This doesn't only come through the brutal violence that surrounds the game, but it also shows itself in each characters's emotions and feelings towards one-another. The catch is that this only becomes apparent if you allow yourself to empathize and understand the characters without letting pre-conceived notions cloud your judgement. If you can look past the flaws of certain characters and understand them as people then you'll likely enjoy this game, otherwise it'll be nothing but misery.

My only gripes with the story are more based in how it's presented rather than the content itself. The story will continuously use flashbacks, albeit in a chronological order, but in a way that still distracts from the story at times. But much bigger than that is the overall pacing, as it tends to make the game feel much longer than it is. The game itself took me 25 hours, and while this did include long stretches of looting and exploring, chapters often felt incredibly long and filled to the brim with story moments that almost made it hard to handle. Multiple objectives and important story events will happen within a day and the ending started to feel like it was farther and farther away when it was actually closer than ever.

Overall, the story, the bulk of the game, is wonderful and bold for a video game. But it'll only be that way if you really try and see what the writers and actors wanted to convey instead of letting your own ideas cloud it all. My only other recommendation is to play the first one beforehand and to go in as blind as possible.

People say that those who dislike this game are hard-right conservatives that hate the idea of homosexuality, feminism, and the idea of strong female characters. I assure you that the reason why the user reviews are extremely low has nothing to do with this.
THE problem with this game is the story. In the first game (The Last of Us) Joel is extremely cautious, cold, calm and collected, never let his guard down, and never gave any information to people he did not trust. However within the first hour of the game Joel tells strangers where they live, their real names and to top it all off, he trusts them right off that bat.
This is not the Joel we learned to know of in the first game of the series. It is sad to say, and it seems like to me that the developers decided to throw out the development of the story for a single message... ("Revenge is bad, it will do no good for you and will consume you").
Don't get me wrong, the visuals of the game are insanely well done, and I love the new intricacies regarding the overall gameplay, however, this game is a story-driven game and the story doesn't really have anything to show. You don't really feel like you go anywhere.
I found no enjoyment in playing or watching the story... why would the developers make you play as a character while you beat the crap out of the main character that you've known to love with another "main" character that you've learned to hate. I just can't see what they were going for here, and neither can the other 40,000 negative reviews.
0/10 This is not a sequel and In my eyes, I will never view it as such.

The problem of TLOU2 is that they have been selling it to you as "the best story ever written" for months, I do not dispute that its mechanics are excellent, that's why I did not give it a 0 in metacritic, but its script seems written by a **** amateur, riddled with inconsistencies and plot holes and with a ridiculous ending at least, that Ellie is a lesbian or stops being a lesbian would have nothing to do if it were not for the fact that they force the character to rub it every 2 minutes by the face, Life is Strange in that aspect it does it INFINITELY better than TLOU2, and the fact of killing Joel a main and beloved character, as if he were a stuffed character only because he does not represent the LGBT figure and the **** that they want to make people bad ... that disappointment. Even after hearing all of the leaks, I still went out, bought the game and played it for myself because I loved the first one so much! What a disappointment this was. I could care less about having LGBTQ characters, just give me a good story and make them well written, I got neither. This was not the Joel and Ellie I’ve come to love and admire, these are other people, who make dumb wreck-less decisions the characters in the first game would never make. What a waste and letdown this game was. Killing off one of gamings best characters and then forcing you to play as the one who killed them off??? Poorly played naughty dog, very poorly played... In addition to having everything the previous game has: complex themes, beautiful music, alluring art direction, and the relationship between Joel and Ellie, this new installment builds on that relationship by taking away something that both fans and Ellie love, creating a level of player-character connectivity that no other game has done to such an emotional degree.

The story is violent and controversial in the vein of The Nightingale (2018) as tense as Uncut Gems (2019) and as bittersweet as the first Last of Us. Though it does stumble a bit when it comes to pacing (especially half-way through the game) but the momentum that was broken is masterfully brought back, building to a tense climax, aftermath, and emotional and reflective resolution.

Along with my complaints with the glaring break in momentum, the game, at some points, felt needlessly long. Certain events could have been shortened to allow for a better flow of the story. However, that was not too bothersome. The marketing did feel misleading in that the audience expected major plot points that did not end up happening. However, misleading marketing is what Hollywood does so often, that it's somewhat of a given when it comes to AAA games and blockbuster movies.

Needless to say, the game is 100% worth your time and money.

This game gets a lot of hate but I truly found this to be a great sequel to arguably the greatest game of all time. Is it The Last of Us part 1? No. But holding it to that standard sets a bar that is unfair to the game and all who play it. This game was visually stunning and the amount of details that went into it deserve the highest praise. They also significantly improved the combat mechanics and allows the game to feel fresh and new. Overall if you're debating on whether or not you want to buy this game I say you absolutely should. SPOILERS BELOW

I see a lot of people getting upset about how and when Joel died. Was Joel a hardened survivalist? Yes. However him and Tommy made a split second decision to save Abby from that horde. I hear people saying "Joel would never trust people that easily" but in the first game he did that. Remember Henry and Sam? Unfortunately this time the people he trusted backfired. As for him dying so early on I get the game leading up made it seem as if he was a significant part I'll give you that. But this game wasn't/isn't about Joel. This is Ellie's game and about her need for revenge opposite from Abby's. You we're supposed to feel upset about Joel. His death was supposed to try and get you to feel as if you were Ellie and I think that was accomplished.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to preface this review with I didn't read any spoilers before playing and completed the whole game.

The Last of Us Part 2 has some of the best graphics, world, atmosphere, level design, and gameplay I've ever played. But as a narrative-driven game, the second half of the game takes some turns that resulted in me not wanting to finish the game. I was only able to complete this game because of the amazing gameplay/level-design and wanting to see how badly they could mess up an otherwise compelling story. By the end of the game I understood the story Naugty Dog was trying to tell. I think there is a good story in there, but the characters and the tropes they pushed in second half of the game missed the mark for me. I feel they are pandering too much to certain demographic and didn't make any attempt to make the second half of the game relatable to the general audience. So let me explain my issues with the narrative:

    *SPOLIERS*
In the first half of the game you play as Ellie trying to get revenge on a character named Abby for killing Joel. Being a big fan of other zombie games/movies, while killing Joel was a huge shock, it didn't turn me off to the game. It was inline for this kind of universe for me. I enjoyed playing as Ellie and I liked all of the new characters they introduced. Watching Ellie slowly become more and more lost to hatred as she kills off Abby friends while hunting for her was believable and compelling to me. You eventually get to the climax where you are confronted with Abby herself. There's so much tension and anticipation built up and then the game just screws you over. When you think you're going to get that sweet revenge it switches over to flashback of Abby with her dad, and then proceeds to make you play the same timeline as Ellie but from Abby's perspective. This is where the game lost me. I don't like Abby's character, and over the course of 10 hours playing as her, that didn't change. I rushed through Abby's part of the game because I didn't care about her and just wanted to see the end of Ellie's storyline. The game is trying to make you empathize and like Abby, but her character is just boring and uninteresting to me. I understand why she killed Joel, I understand she lost her love interest to her quest for revenge, I understand the pain from all of her friends being murdered by Ellie, I understand her trying to slowly redeem herself by helping Lev, I understand she grew and let go of her hatred for Ellie. Despite this, I never found her story interesting and hated playing her the whole time. I would often suicide to vent frustration. I feel really conflicted about this as well because a lot of my favorite gameplay sequences were during Abby's playthrough. Escaping from the scars after being hanged, descending a broken skyscraper filled with zombies, the boss fight in the hospital basement, and the sniper part. These were all some of the coolest things I've played in a game. I just wish I wasn't playing as Abby.

The ending also dragged on forever. I kept thinking the game would end and then there was repeatedly another level or cut screen tacked on. This resulted in my friend and I playing "take a drink every time you think the game is gonna end". I think they could've cut a lot of last few hours out or structured it better. Overall though I think this is a good game. I didn't like Abby's story but I still enjoyed the gameplay itself. If you don't mind Abby or don't care about the story I think you will really enjoy this game. And I think if you were intereseted in game at first, but turned off by the controversy, you should still give the game a chance.

The story is enjoyable, and while I absolutely hated Abby and hated playing as her, playing her made sense in the grand scheme of thing, which was: You pay a big price for revenge and can get lost in hate.

The biggest problem Last of Us 2 has are:

    1) It is not as good as Last of Us 1. With Last of Us 1, they set the bar very high, and last of us 2 needed to at least meet that, but it didn't
    2) Questionable character decision: Joel told us not to trust any stranger in the first Last of Us. Joel knew not to just outright invite them or follow them into the cabin, and yet he did. Why? Because it was the easiest way of writing it. I didn't feel that was Joel making this decision, but rather someone deciding for him, what gets the job done the quickest and the job was to get Ellie on her path to revenge.

If there was no Last of Us 1, this would have gotten a better score from me, but knowing the characters, I don't think they made the choices they should have made based on the previous game.

Dina, in my opinion is the best character out of all of them. She is the one making the most sensible choices, the one that fit her the most. Maybe because I never knew her before the first one, but I also didn't know Abby.

This game would have been better as a standalone game, and not as a continuation of the first Last of Us.

I was sold initially, I thought that The Last of Us Part II would live up to the previous game and improve upon it significantly in both gameplay and story so I stayed away from the rumors, leaks and even trailers so that I could form my own opinion of the game by playing it instead of being influenced by other peoples biases and opinions.

But after approximately 30 hours of gameplay I have to ask - what story where Naughty Dog trying to tell?

I was willing to put aside the cruel event near the start set things into motion, disrespectful as it was to the characters that we as players have grown to identify with and have an attachment to, I felt that the decisions made by a character in the first game; not to mention the unpredictability of the world they live in caused the events of the second game to take place but that same characters' actions were also the catalyst for the overarching theme behind setting both of the primary protagonists down a similar path. That theme was vengeance, or so I thought and this is why I ask - what story were Naughty Dog trying to tell?

From the beginning of the game and throughout, the characters that the player already identifies with and has some emotional attachment to, feed the players with a lust for revenge but when you, playing as Elly are finally standing in front of the people she has sworn to kill she is held back by her creators (by which I mean Naughty Dog) which means that we as the player can't help but feel deprived of any real satisfaction and the journey of vengeance that we were sold on and coaxed into just results in frustration and anger for the player at the inability to take any meaningful action. There is no satisfaction to be had, no outcome where the person sitting in front of the TV feels any less angry at how these interactions play out. The closest thing to what we as the player expected is probably the Nora event and even that tried to blueball us.

And it just goes on from there, knowing that at crucial moments, the game takes the control out of your hands and at a certain point you may as well watching a movie because the player feels completely powerless.

The other half of this is Naughty Dog providing us context in the form of the other primary Protagonist, Abby by providing perspective and her backstory. I can only assume they did this because they wanted us, the player to empathize with her on some level. Props to Naughty Dog for the attempt but her story should've been nutshelled because putting the player in her shoes for half the game in a bid flesh out her story to get us to identify with her or forgive her in some way or even understand her actions didn't pan out. She felt 2 dimensional. She's a human, she has emotions and feelings and a personality but where was any of that? It needed to be expressed in some way but that never really happened. Everyone has a story, everyone has their reasons for doing the terrible things they've done and none of that matters because in their world people live and die and bad situations are waiting around every corner. That is their reality. So again, while I let that crucial and cruel event at the start of the game go, why was Abby's story necessary? I didn't relate to her any more at the end of the game than I did at the start, it changed nothing and added nothing and to be brutally honest, Abby's story felt like a waste of time, it felt like a story that didn't need to be told at least in half a game.

Why a score of 4? I didn't have any particular issues with gameplay or mechanics although some non rope throwing or ladder moving puzzles would've been welcome while exploring the game world. So this game based off of the graphics, audio, immersion, collectibles and effort put into the game to make it feel special would've earned it at least an 8 or 9 right? The last of us had one crucial ingredient in it and that was its story. It held everything else together and I could look past any niggles I had with any aspect of the game BECAUSE OF THE STORY. I absolutely adored the few interactions between Elly and Joel in this game, they were wonderful and I wanted more of that but instead we had a weird clown gun taped to our hands and when we pull the trigger it would fire bullets and kill as many of the inconsequential enemies infected and human alike but when it came time to pull the trigger against the real antagonists, from the players perspective a depressing dribble of water would come out instead.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Joel was never the good guy, he was the first game´s antagonist. Just how Ellie and Joel kill people in cold blooded and dry ways , also can abby when killing joel and jesse.
The first game is about:Selfishness, and how joel doesn't want to experience loss once more do that is why he "saves" Ellie.
The Second game is about:Forgiveness, and how Ellie cannot forgive Joel for taking away the only thing she looked forward to, In the scene where Ellie tells Joel she´ll try to forgive Joel is parallel to her not killing Abby. Ellie isn't as sadistic as Abby so revenge at the end becomes futile, she isn't at Abby´s level , by letting her live she has moved on from Joel's passing.

It's no secret how terrible Abby´s writing is, the game structure is all over the place, when we play as Abby we do not care or have motivation, I believe the Abby part needs waaaaaaaaay better writting and that the part we play as her is the part we play first so we wonder who this person is and them BAM! we´ve been playing as the villain all along.

Swear to me there are no spoilers... I swear.

Following up to one of the most acclaimed PlayStation games was never going to be an easy feat. Many of us agreed that the first game did not warrant a sequel and Naughty Dog told us that there would only be a sequel if there was a story to be told. With a reputation such as theirs, I trusted they would do the right thing. 7 years later, the story is here and it has been one of the most divisive and polarizing games released this generation.

The first Last of us was my favorite narrative based game largely because of the well crafted characters and interactions between them juxtaposed against the backdrop of a dismal world. However, if you go into the second installment with the same expectations or use it as any form of guideline, you are in for one hell of a shock! Part II was made to differentiate itself from its predecessor and subvert your expectations. It takes the franchise into a very different direction to what you may have anticipated... and would have wanted.

    So... what's GOOD?
This game is not a masterpiece, but it isn't terrible. Unfortunately, this games strengths lie in the technical department rather than the story itself. The gameplay, animations, systems , AI and attention to detail is hardly rivalled by other games and adds character and previously unexplored tones to each location. The dev's who worked their asses off deserve a lot of credit for what they managed to pull off here. The improved combat system is extremely satisfying, especially when you land heavy blows or feel the impact of enemy strikes that knock you to the ground. The ability to craft a range of useful and well balanced weapons gives you options on how to best take on enemies. The new groups you encounter are unnerving but also not surprising in a crazy apocalyptic world such as this one. The new ability to go prone saved my ass too many times and now you're able to disappear in the overgrown environment like Rambo. The sound design is also fantastic and Gustavo Santaolalla's soundtrack fits very well with the themes in the game with "Unbroken" being my personal favorite track. Apart from the technical side, there are some good story moments too where I actually found myself feel something or actually take a liking to a new character. However, these moments are brief and occur very early into the game or during flashbacks.

    THE BAD
The game is overwhelmingly but understandingly bleak and rarely mimics the charm of the first game, apart from one or two missions (you'll know if you've played it!). Although this game is twice as long as the first game, I felt little connection with the new characters and every single one of them felt underdeveloped. Not only do you not care about these characters, but you are also forced to spend a lot of time with the people you do not like, resulting in a lack of investment. The jumbled storytelling, character design, character decisions and sometimes dialogue throughout the game seems awkward and will often make you lose your s**t... which is a massive problem for a narrative based game. This inconsistency and lack of investment has a destructive effect on your ability to enjoy large gameplay sections and will undoubtedly become tedious, disjointed and grueling. On many occasions I laughed or rolled my eyes at the events that were unfolding on the screen because they were so unbelievable, flawed, tropey, convenient or simply just pointless.

    THE UGLY
The game does not hold back on its violence and actually gives you little option to avoid it. If you don't like to see people dismembered into red mist using crudely crafted weapons or you are a massive dog lover this game might not be for you. The game will also plunge you into dark and spooky areas with your flashlight as the only source. There is one hair raising mission that would not feel misplaced in a resident evil game (if you know, you know).

    THE VERDICT
When all is considered, this game is undoubtedly a technical marvel but falls flat in large segments of the story due to its fixation on teaching you basic morals. In turn, the game sacrifices character development, pacing and everything you enjoyed about the first game. If the focus switched to what this franchise means to the majority of us, then it would have been better received by its audience.

Well they scrapped that and replaced him with some random boy we're supposed to care about! Then for loads of the game we have to play as joels killer in the games attempt for us to like her?? The ending is **** we get absolutely no redemption for joel and instead are reminded that joel died knowing ellie still hated him. No justice at all and joel honestly is barely in the damn game! Cheap shot from naughty dog honestly. Expand

The risk of killing Joel off was a risk but it needed to happen, we are meant to hate (core theme of the game) Abby and see her actions justified. The game does not deserve the hate, it is a great game with strong gameplay and a powerful story, that really makes you question is revenge necessary or does revenge only lead to more revenge (a circle). The game alos encompasses strong symbolism at the end where Ellie loses her ability to play the guitar her last connection to Joel. The game has left the door open for a part 3 but can also end here with part 2. Expand

They should really have a mark for all the critic reviews that were paid for by Naughty Dog. The first game thrived on its plot above all else, and this game flops horribly in that department. The story is atrocious and horribly delivered. I was so excited when this was announced, but this squeal has disappointed me on every level.

Yep, I guess these things happen.

I am sad to say this but I did not like this game, from a technical point of view the game is very good, the tech/art team did a great job and the accessibility options they included should set a precedent for upcoming titles. The gameplay is good, similar to TLOU1, however, I found the plot, the message, and the character development cheap and tiring.

This game feels awkward and at times even boring, maybe due to poorly developed characters combined with a linear story and repetitive combat scenarios, at least for a 20+ hours journey. Many of the characters dialogues felt disconnected from the multiple shocking events that were presented to the player. In my personal experience, the game tried to push some feelings so hard that they ultimately lost me. In the end, instead of being immersed in the universe, I was more like, oh look here the writers are using these tricks to make me empathize with this one character as opposed to this character who is doing this other thing…there is a lot of plot armor and is hard to ignore. Moreover, there is a new character who basically has a very similar arc than TLOU1, which is ok but this is done in a pushy, rushed way and at least for me it did not work. It is interesting how I went from caring about the people in this universe to being completely disconnected, and now I just don’t care what will happen to them. I think if this were a TV series, that you can leave it on the background while doing some other activity is ok, but as a game that requires almost all of your attention its a waste of time. Maybe the writers were trying to do some kind of ‘social experiment’ because It is hard to believe that no-one pointed out the flaws during the production stages. However, I do not know if having such a polarized reception and making a game to shock and promote hate is something to be proud of.

I loved the story of TLOU1 because I found it fresh compared to other post-apocalyptic worlds (e.g., the walking dead). I think for someone that doesn’t care too much about story and consistency this is just a cliche plot, the gameplay is fine. If TLOU1 has a special place in your heart, I would recommend to not buy this game without reading more about it, because the advertisement is kind of misleading and you can find yourself wasting your free time on an unpleasant experience. I think the best aspect of this game has been its progression from a tragedy to a comedy, the fact that many people overcome this kind of disbelief together and ended up laughing about it and letting it go, better titles will come. In my opinion, this game is to be bought on sale price and a reminder that sometimes preordering may not be the smartest decision.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay is good and rewarding. The problem is that the story writing and character development is poor... so poor that it's something you would expect to read from an 8th grader.

Ellie's relationship with Joel is strained from the opening scenes and there appears to be no explanation, despite the fact that Joel has risked life and limb for her. Ellie is in a lesbian relationship with Dina, the only problem is that it Dina's character lacks depth and is emotionless, doing little to drive the plot forward. What little we see of Joel's character is different, less self assured and confident than the previous game (character destruction).

The combined effect is that the death of Joel at Abby's hands feels hollow, you must then play 10+ hours as Abby, which is clearly a thinly veiled attempt at LGBT inclusive story writing, as the character most likely has Swyer syndrome, which is a difficult thing to live with - and if written correctly with decent character arc and prologue could work in the games favour. But when used purely for identity politics and review leverage, the unfortunate effect is that the players are unlikely to relate to the character at all and even despise them ... which is ironically counter productive to the LGBT inclusive agenda clearly propagated throughout the story.

I believe that what you have is a very lazy attempt at social engineering through the 'gaming' medium, and I say lazy because the most effective way to change peoples mind is not blatantly demonstrate or dictate how they should think and feel, but subtly lead them to what you want them to think and feel through character development and rewarding story arcs. 1/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has many positives that get overshadowed by inconsistent writing. If story is not too important to you, then this game will probably be to your liking. Review contains some general spoilers.

First, I want to highlight that this game is graphically very well done, with good sound design and very good voiceovers across the entire cast. Gameplay feels like a natural evolution of the previous game, but is not revolutionary. Accessibility options will be a welcome addition for some, and I hope this level of inclusivity sets the new industry standard. By far the weakest point of this game is its sub-par story and pacing.

The game starts with a brief update of what Joel and Ellie are up to, but it soon changes to a much darker tone when Abbie tortures and murders Joel in plain sight of Ellie. We later learn that Abbie is the daughter of one of the Firefly doctors Joel murders at the end of TLOU.

The story follows a mirrored revenge story told from two perspectives, Ellie, and newcomer Abbie. There is a very deliberate focus on the futility of revenge and breaking the cycles of violence, a perspective that is bafflingly only applied to Ellie's side of the story, because it turns out that 50% of the game is played from Abbie's perspective; with a story line that ultimately feels almost entirely disconnected from what Ellie is up to.

The story is interspersed with many flashbacks that add (some) depth to Abbie's character, and that appeal to the nostalgia factor of the Joel-Ellie relationship. These flashbacks are strategically placed to rob the story of any momentum, whenever something exciting happens, there's a flashback that yanks all the pacing out of whack.

Despite the criticism, Abbie is a serviceable character that is introduced in the worst possible manner. She is a hardened killer with selective morality, proving to be very caring with Lev, a boy she meets and develops a relationship with in a mere 3 days while Ellie is coincidentally rampaging through Seattle. Despite the overall story being focused on the futility of violence, this perspective is very much lost on Abbie's side of the story. She is shown to be traumatized ONLY by the violence inflicted on her, but really seems to not give two **** about murdering anyone that stands in her way. In many ways, this character is similar to pre-redemtion Joel, and it even follows a similar arc by taking Lev under her wing, but this arc is far too rushed to really land.

Several "contextual" clues are given to make the player care about Abbie, she has the best combat, guns, expansive storyline, no one is forcing you to feel bad for your actions as her, she plays fetch with dogs, NEVER encounters a dog enemy, has a "cute" character flaw in her fear of heights. Meanwile, Ellies entire storyline is miserable, she is deeply affected by her actions towards revenge. This really rubbed me the wrong way, not because either point of view is bad for storytelling or gameplay reasons, but just because they do not match, all arguments about the inmorality of Ellie's actions apply to Abbie, but the game facetiously does not make those arguments during Abbie's playthrough. By the end of the game, Ellie is left a miserable, traumatized husk of her former self, while Abbie is essentially unscathed and at peace. The message just doesnt compute.

The story itself is also riddled with bafflingly out-of-character choices by all major players (Joel, Ellie and Abbie), with many contrived "saved in the nick of time" plot moments, where main characters are saved by extensive use of plot armor. Side characters, however, die like flies with little story impact, many of the side character deaths are barely met with a gasp, and their names are literally never mentioned again. There were many points, especially on Ellie's story, where the story could have ended on a more poignant note (notably post Seattle discussion with Dina).

There is no big payoff in story-telling through the entire playthrough, the basic scenario is still various factions of humans fighting for resources, where weirdly the zombies seem to really only appear as a minor inconvenience, this also deadens the emotional conflict of both Abbie and Ellie with Ellie not dying to make the cure, since it seems it really makes no difference.

Side characters Dina, Lev and Yara are fine, but they are undeveloped as a whole. Lev and Yara's side story is particularily pointless, since about 8 hours of the game are devoted to them without really developing characters or changing the world state.

Overall the game is significantly longer than its predecessor, but squanders its running time with little left to say. I think the ending scene is meant to leave the player to reflect about the futility of violence and the importance of making your peace with your loved ones. Personally, it left me reflecting on the futility of expecting something profound from this franchise.

It is true killing Joel sucked, I screamed at the TV. “No wtf” I actually did this a few times, I couldn’t set it down. I am Joel, I’d have done everything Joel did, he lives on in me. This is a story about hate and ugliness. Ellie loses EVERYTHING, she can even play guitar at the end. It’s true it’s not the story I wanted, that doesn’t make it a bad story.
