This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I bought this game having replayed LoU remastered and ignoring all the bad press about Ellie - you know she's gay from LoU expansion and its irrelevant (even if her romance is rammed down your throat).
Potentially some of the greatest gameplay on the ps4 with amazing encounters is ruined by forcing you to play the comically beefed up enemy Abby for half the game.
I know the writers were going for a Jamie Lannister-style turnaround, but it doesn't work, you still want her dead and I ended up rushing through this part of the game to get back to being Ellie, even though there were some really cool set pieces as Abby. Did they even do any honest user testing? The ending was also very unsatisfactory and made the whole final journey pointless. Potentially the greatest game of this console let down by writing trying to be too clever. Only bit I enjoyed in second half of game was launching Abby off buildings/ losing to Ellie on purpose in their theatre showdown.

Excellent gameplay and a beautiful looking game. I'm impressed with the risks Naughty Dog was willing to take. The story in my opinion is a little tedious and it's hard to emphasize with the characters. Overall I think it's a good game, but it doesn't live up to the expectations when you compare it with TLOU1.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The main issue I had with this game is the script, the story is written terribly, one of the main reasons why is because Joel (Protagonist in Part 1) is killed off in the first few hours of the game and I can understand why people did not like that. Joel getting killed off is not the main issue, the main issue is about 10-13 hours into the game you play the character Abby (The husky lady who killed Joel with a golf club) and that was not a smart move to play. You could have created many better outcomes for this game but you didn't. One of the other things people might not like about it is that it takes risk, and by risk I mean that it dares to be depressing and I think that this game is pretty good. This game has one of the most depressing ending I have ever seen in my life. The message is trying to say is that heroes don't always get the death they deserve, what addiction can lead to, and in this world their is no good and bad only people doing what they think is right. Gameplay 10/10, Story 6/10, characters 3/10 Art direction 10/10, dialogue 7/10. This game is a 7.4/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR - too long, but worth a go for some pretty solid gameplay if you can pick it up on sale. I don't think this is GOTY at all, but worth playing still.

It's hard to really define where I fall on this game. On one hand, the gameplay is pretty good. The stealth isn't so merciful that if you're discovered you can't get back into stealth to try and finish your enemies off sneakily, and enemy AI feels dynamic and smart.

That said, the gameplay doesn't evolve beyond the first chapter - sure there are upgrades, but they're minimal and don't change gameplay much. Generally, the game is too long, twice as long as it needs to be - and that's not that I'm against switching perspective half way through, I just think that each half should have been half the length, maybe even shorter.

Through most of the game I found myself dissapointed that I had gameplay to go through, I genuinely think it would have made a better short TV series than a game. With that said again, the character motivations throughout feel forced and unbelievable - particularly with each character flip-flopping towards the end.

The boss fights also weren't great - at least not the ones against humans. Melee doesn't feel good in this game, and the bit where you're Abby chasing Ellie felt disconnected to the rest of the gameplay.

Also a shame they got rid of Joel, as the only character relationship I really gave a **** about was between him and Ellie, all the other characters have rubbish chemistry and awful dialogue.

What stops this from getting a 10 is the story, which by now you heard is very controversial. I'll give the creators props for taking chances and really hitting you in the gut with some genuinely shocking moments. However, the way the story was executed left a lot to be desired. I get what they were going for, but in the end, I was left unsatisfied and not really all that stoked for the next game. The major issue with the story isn't the themes, it's how they were done. The first game was a masterpiece in visual storytelling and character arches that really made you invest. In this game, all subtlety is replaced with beat-you-over-the-head preaching and excessive amounts of cheap storytelling tropes that frankly make you despise every character. By the end, I really didn't care who lived or died, I just wanted it to end. I can't even say if this game has any replay value because I beat it a week after finishing it and have no desire to relive it, a far cry from the epic journey I wanted to go on countless times in the first game. Hopefully, the third installment takes the "less is more" approach. Expand

The narrative structure is a mess, if the devs wanted me to empathise and understand Abby, they should have opened the game with the flashback of her father, and allowed the player some time to warm to her before having her do something horrible. In the original, Joel is thoroughly humanised in the opening sequence for a reason - first impressions stick. And there is a reason why his worst act (decimating the fireflies) is saved for the final sequence - by that point we can understand his actions, even if we can't agree with them. Introducing a character as a murderous psychopath and then redeeming them is a tall order, but not impossible (see: Jamie Lannister). But it needs to be done with finesse - hamfisted sequences with pet dogs and former lovers sprinkled between further atrocities did not work. The game asks players to consider the cycle of hate, how it can damage a person, and how there are two sides to any conflict. It is ironic that these themes obviously took precedence over plot and character in development, but fail to land because of the shambolic plot and characters.

Given a 7 for the beautiful visuals and improvements in mechanics, and for having some passable characters and story beats. I expect the lowish user score is due to its mediocrity being so disappointing considering the masterpiece that was the original. Surprised to see the high critic scores, I won't be trusting critics again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us: Part II is a good game and while I don't think it's as bad as people say, I don't think it's as good as critics made it out to be either. It is a much weaker game than the original. While there are 10/10 aspects of this game for sure, there were a few aspects that didn't really work for me.

    The great:
    Graphics - 10/10 (Pretty self-explanatory)
Gameplay - 10/10 (While gameplay might seem outdated to some, I thoroughly enjoyed it)
Level Design - 10/10 (Levels so large with multiple paths to evade/escape enemies
Acting - 10/10 (Ashley, Laura, Troy and others fantastic, as expected.
Nostalgic Flashback Sequences between Ellie and Joel - 10/10

    The good:
I do like the story to this game and I like what the writers were going for however, I think with a stronger writer this game could have been amazing. I did like a lot of characters (Ellie, Joel, Lev, Yara, Dina, Jessie, Tommy, Owen and even Abby.

    The not-so good:
I don't have a problem with Joel dying the way he did, he was never a good guy and it makes sense that former fireflies would be seeking revenge for what he did at the end of the first game. However, I do have a problem when his death is not set-up properly. Joel and Tommy walking into a room full of armed strangers seemed out of place and contrived if I'm honest. There was just barely any suspense leading up to his death.
I think Seattle Day 1 for both Ellie and Abby could've been shortened down at least half, as this really affects the pacing (However, Seattle Day 2 definitely improved this, in my opinion).
i also don't understand why Joel is seen by everyone as the only villain in this game either. I wish the game demonstrated how both Joel and the Fireflies were both villains, as neither of them asked Ellie's permission as to what she would like to have done.
Mel was an awful character and I had no problem seeing her get stabbed in the neck by Ellie. I thought she was so stupid to go out on a combat mission whilst pregnant.
I liked Dina, Jessie, Lev etc. but I wish they were fleshed out more so I could care about them even more. That being said, all performances in this game were fantastic.
The Santa Barbara section was also too long, especially when I thought the game was coming to an end. Speaking of that section, I had no problem with Ellie sparing Abby at the end, it just didn't make sense considering the 1000s of NPCs she killed before then, whilst showing no remorse for any of them.

    Overall:
As a huge fan of the original, I did enjoy this, and it is a very fun game to play. However, I feel that the writers, Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross, had good ideas but they needed a stronger writer overall. I would recommend this if you can get it at a sale price. Considering how divisive the game is, I can't be sure if you will enjoy it or not.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 is a story that attempts to say many things, yet ultimately fails to cohesively convey everything it wishes to say. There are elements that feel forced, and there are some unlikable and often forgettable characters. The game will make you feel uncomfortably powerful and powerless.
Before I begin on the story, let me first say whatever positives I have regarding this game. Those can be broken down into three categories. Gameplay, visuals, and accessibility. After this, I will talk regarding story.

    Visuals
TLOU2 is perhaps one of the most photorealistic games in recent memory. I had just come off of playing Death Stranding prior to playing this game. The beautiful yet horrifying and occasionally grotesque set pieces within this title were clearly crafted with love. Naughty Dog has taken the world that they originally conveyed on PS3 and utilized the technology of the modern age to create vivid imagery. I myself love when a pretty game comes out that shows what hardware can truly push. The Last of Us has a uniquely apocalyptic while still grounded art design and it is beautifully showcased. Seattle is the main set piece and the depressing, overcast, and dreary atmosphere permeate this game perfectly. The characters we see are often detailed down to pores. The environments feel simultaneously dead and alive as if they were made to fill the player with dread while still having their own beauty. The infected areas made my skin crawl with their dusty, overgrown, and eerie design. Additionally, the glass breaking mechanics were a small detail that was overexploited by myself for simple satisfaction. Areas to climb, walk through, or squeeze through were made obvious, in a way where it was mentally recognizable without having necessary visual indication. Overall, the visuals Naughty Dog within TLOU2 were top tier.

    Gameplay
The gameplay of TLOU2 was in classic Naughty Dog fashion to their previous games. This time however, many of these mechanics felt refined, more responsive, and were fun to use. The key word here is "felt". These mechanics felt familiar to their predecessors, but somehow also felt like they were somewhat snappier, had a little less delay once input, and all movement felt smoother. Naughty Dog has a realistic approach to actions made by the characters as well. Unlike popular action games such as Call of Duty, you cannot simply make 5 actions happen in a split second. This allows players to take a slower and more methodical approach to combat within these games. I would be remised if I did not talk about infected encounters as well. These encounters feel more weighty in this game with the new dodge mechanic. This dodge mechanic adds a new level of savagery to the combat and, more specifically, to the enemies. The infected feel heavier and more ferocious with the player having to be less careless and pay more attention to everything the opponent does. It turns melee combat into more of a dance. Finally, the puzzle mechanics such as power, ropes, and safes are all powerful but sometimes tedious. In summary, the gameplay of TLOU2 feels tighter, more deadly, and consequential, which are all powerful in a game like this.

    Accessibility
Gaming is for everyone. That is the sentiment that much of the industry shares and it shines brightly in TLOU2. Once the game first boots up, it takes you through an in-depth list of options to make this game as accessible as it possibly can be for all who decide to play. I wish to see this in more titles from all developers. I enjoyed the auto pickup mechanic as I believe my triangle button may have given out after playing through this title otherwise. When everyone can play a game, everyone wins.

    Story
I had not played The Last of Us until before I played this title. The end of the first title ending with Joel's lie left me with a feeling as if there was more to explore. The opening of TLOU2 gave me the best closure for the end of the first title. In contrast, the story of TLOU2 left me with more closure at the end than the first title with Ellie walking into the distance defeated. The story of TLOU2 is polarizing to say the least. I found myself feeling as though this was a multiple choice story but only had one option for me to follow with the linear story. I found my morals and emotions challenged. However, like Seattle, storms loomed too. Characters such as Isaac, Mel, Jesse, Tommy, and Owen all felt underused to me. The LGBTQ+ elements of this story felt forced in the case of Ellie and Dina, who I did not sense a deep connection between. The elements of Lev being trans and forced out of the religious cult that he is a part of feel like a political message. The story left me feeling hollow, yet indifferent. Desolate is the descriptor for my experience. The Last of Us Part 2 is a game that will have you go through many emotions, trials, and moral-challenging situations. Play this game and see how you feel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played this game with very low expectations due to the review bombing that suffered. I should've known better, the game is really good. Not 9 or 10 good, but good nevertheless.

The story and plot is compelling if you bother in having an open mind and try to understand. The game-play is way better than in the first one and also is the level design.

Why people in this comments keeps repeating the nonsense of Joel being out of character and entering Abby's gang hideout? He is no longer a survivor, he lived safe and comfy in Jackson for 4+ years already. Plus he is old. Just pay attention to the story and stop whining.

The story is great, makes you feel miserable, yes, but that is not manipulation. Plenty of other stories in other media and in games try to achieve the same. And that is great! You cannot just rate 0, 1 or 2 a game because it was not the cliche story with good vs evil. It is a very humane story, we are all good and evil.

Graphics, acting and music are top notch.

    My complains:

The secondary characters are my only real problem. They all are quite empty and shallow, with maybe the exception of Lev. (-1)

Game-play: well, this is nothing new, even improved from the first game, in the second it is still quite repetitive. It actually helped that Abby and Ellie had different weapons and styles to approach conflict. But still. They should have approached the game with more open-city like in the beginning, it would've been much better (-1)

Companies should stop f***ing up their employees. With happy employees you get higher quality products. With crunched employees your projects get delayed and they suffer in quality (-1)

Patch it for PS5 please! it was even slower and lower quality than in PS4-pro, i will definitely play it again and go for platinum when that happens. (this does not subtract)

    My review about salty reviewers:

    - they are not open minded, hence they don't understand the story. You don't decide the story, writers do.
    - I have the feeling that having the 2 main characters being strong women made many kb warriors salty.
    - false advertisement claims are nonsense. A game isn't finished until they go gold. Everything before is just work in progress subject to change.
    - developers owe us nothing as fans, period. You don't like it? don't buy it. I am pretty sure that at least 40% of the negative reviews are just kb-warriors trolling.

The stealth in this game is basic as hell and the fact that people are giving this a 10/10 gameplay is just hilarious to me. For a 25-30 hour game, the gameplay is not deep enough to supply you with that much entertainment for so long. The amount of choices you have to kill enemy groups are definitely not limited but again is not enough to entertain you for so long. The lack of puzzles is really daunting, other than doing the decent stealth, all you do is walk around this beautiful world and spam triangle mindlessly to loot stuff, that's it. There is no puzzles to enhanced the game's repetition and the combat from the first 4 hours till the last 2 hours is almost unrecognizable other than the new guns that does not change the gameplay loop at all. If this game was a tight 16-18 hour long game I would excuse a lot of these issues but it is not, the game felt repetitive and a straight up drag to play.
The only problem I have with the story is that instead of making the story entirely around the characters, they made he story entirely around the message it was trying to tell. You can find characters doing borderline out of character or even stupid things just for the sake of the plot and the message is pretty elementary level.
Other than that, still a pretty good game and I recommend it on sale

I was going into the game expecting to hate it and while I feel they could have done many things better it was still a good game. Joels death was horrible. How would you feel if one of your favorite characters of all time was killed two hours into the game with a golf club to the head and then his lifeless corpse spat on and told to go to hell??? Once I got over this the game was ok. I loved the cutscenes but they were a little out of order it seemed to me. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. if i were to rate this a year ago when the game came out this would no doubt be a 10 for me. i loved my first play through but going back a few weeks ago i have some issues with it.

the games far too long. on average it’s took me around 23 hours to beat. i get that they want you to play as both characters but does each section need to be upwards of 10 hours? and on top of that you also have to do the unnecessary santa barbra 2 hour killing spree just to get to the end of the game and have ellie do nothing to abby. the person she hates the most and who she’s wanted dead for the last 25 hours of gameplay. what-

the love triangles. one is pushing it but 2? really naughty dog? at least with dina, ellie, and jesse you have some character development and they come across as somewhat interesting but mel and owen are barely characters. owen is only there to be a love interest for abby but then mel is there to be the love interest for owen... how does that make any sense? and then owen just ends up cheating on mel, his pregnant girlfriend with abby the night before ellie comes and murders them. talk about jamming plot into the span of almost no time.

the pacing. if you’re telling me this game has good pacing you’re objectively wrong. if you actually wanna play the game you have to wait 2 hours and slowly sit and wait to watch joel die so you can go to seattle and actually play the game and forward plot. it’s obnoxious. and no i’m not mad because joel died, he absolutely deserved to. joel was by no means a good person and people tend to forget that because he’s the main character saving this girl but he hurt a lot of people and i think he deserved it. as much as i loved joel i can’t say his death was unexpected it was just the question of how. and i think his death was fine. he had literally no option but to go with abby because he would’ve died there and then by zombies if he didn’t go. but you play for 13 hours as ellie getting revenge for her father figure that was murdered in front of her and then you wake up for day 4 and jesse immediately dies, tommy gets pinned, ellie looks as if she’s about to get shot and then boom. you switch abby. who you play as for the next 9-10 hours of the game. i physically had to stop for a bit after the switch because it was so **** stupid. the only part that saved abby’s section was yara and lev who are by far the most interesting characters in that game. them and the seraphites kind of ways are very interesting to hear about and see. the rat king boss fight is also really intense and enthralling and i can’t say i was expecting that. as well as day 3 with abby when you get to the seraphite island and make it to yara and lev’s mom to find out she’s dead and then have to escape the island in hopes of getting away from both scars and wlf is really fun and exciting. but that first day as abby is truly miserable. they present it as if it’s an entire other game and start from scratch with a brand new storyline 12 hours into a game you thought was already getting a bit repetitive; but for the sake of ellie and to see how she got out you kept going. and those flashback placements.. my god. you have a day full of action you’re psyched for the next exhilarating thing and boom you’re in a museum with joel. it’s a real turn and while i loved seeing joel it felt out of place and just there for the sake of being there. also the ellie storyline of revenge is bad but also let’s go kill all of these people one by one brutally for information about someone we’ll end up sparing is extremely confusing.

    overwhelming positives:
as i said yara and lev’s storyline really shined and made the game for me. hearing about what they’ve been through and lev’s backstory is so so interesting and always had me wanting more. the visuals and atmosphere were stunning and you feel as if you were really in a post apocalyptic version of the areas. i also loved the combat mechanics and the stealth options. never have i seen a game do stealth better then this one. the ability to duck in a building and hide in a room after mowing people down or lunging into a field of grass and picking people off with your silenced pistol was so so cool and fun. day 2 as ellie really stuck out because of its nonstop combat and exploration of areas whether it be in hillcrest or the hospital there was always something new.

overall the game sticks out. for good and for bad. it will still resonate with me for making me so invested in something during a time where it was hard for me to enjoy life. and while it has some major flaws it’s still at the end of the day the last of us, not the one we all loved years ago but the one that showed us how brutally honest that world can be. it’s an extremely raw and emotional game that should be seen as it is. it’s not groundbreaking it’s not horrendous. it’s the last of us part 2.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished The Last of Us part 2 and was totally disappointed.
The only nice thing I found and that I saved was the gameplay but only because I had fun.
I state that I was totally indifferent to the story and what was happening in the game, but I followed it all to see how horrible the writing was. The story is told in a horrible way unlike the first chapter, also the game becomes quite predictable with the situations that will happen to you during the game, for example you know that there will be a jump scare, enemies that will attack you, moments when the character falls and other situations such as finding resources before enemies I have bosses, safes and more. For a game that wants to be realistic it is full of forcing to move the plot forward and meaningless moments. For example Tommy who enters Seattle with the horse but when we arrive we find the gate closed and the power turned off, when with Ellie we go to the hospital from Nora and after capturing her we throw ourselves into the hole under both without a mask but the soldiers only notice that Nora does not have the mask, Nora who could give a false information to Ellie about where to find Abby since they were alone and that Nora would have transformed / died from spores, Jesse and Ellie separating while going to the aquarium, the map that falls to Ellie at the aquarium but no one notices even when they return to the theater, Ellie who knows why Abby killed Joel but in the game is not shown how he knows, Jerry Abby's father who should be younger than Joel during the first TLOU but who does not know how he became so good and can create the vaccine despite its alleged age does not correspond with his medical knowledge especially in a post-apocalyptic world, Abby and Lev who are going to the hospital and while crossing the bridge fall right into a building where there is a swimming pool still full of water, the part where Abby arrives at the hospital alone and the WLF soldiers ask him if she has arrived swimming and Abby replies that her boat has gone but checking the area there are no steps to get to new and the only passage to get there by boat has debris and barbed wire, Abby who is not killed several times because she is saved once by Manny, two by Yara, the farm where Ellie, Dina and JJ are that is poorly protected by bandits who could assault her and other forcing and meaningless scenes with which the plot manages to move forward. The enemy artificial intelligence is good but nothing as great as it seemed to me at first look. I didn't like the two The Last of Us and I don't care about their story, characters etc, but honestly I found the first chapter clearly superior on almost everything except the gameplay that in TLOU2 has improved assault her and other forcing and meaningless scenes with which the plot manages to move forward. This review is based on my personal and subjective experience. P.S. Excuse me for my bad English.

This game is not as bad as the fans are saying it is. However, it's not as good as the critics are being paid to say it is. The first half of the game sees you playing as Ellie. All the moments you play as Ellie are fantastic, 10/10. You get set up with a great set of characters, some new some old. The pacing is perfect. It's intense, scary, and fun. That paired with the incredible visuals and gameplay makes for the greatest gaming experience ever. About 11 hours in you switch characters and start playing as the main enemy of the game, Abby. This character change is something that Naughty Dog should've mentioned before the game was released. From here the game falls quickly in quality. After being left on a cliffhanger with Ellie you're forced to play the next 7 hours as this character Abby. Not only is she a one-dimensional character, but the rest of the supporting characters in this section are also incredibly boring. The whole time you really just cant stop thinking about Ellie and the rest of the characters from the first half. While playing as Abby, you go back to the start of the game and play through the events from the enemy's point of view. In between, Naughty Dog tries to make you understand and like Abby's character more by adding unnecessary subplots of her saving useless characters and mixing in a bunch of playable cutscenes showing an extremely boring and cringe-worthy love story between her and another character. This makes the second half very tedious, and it almost feels like a chore to complete. Don't get me wrong, Abby's backstory is extremely important to the overall story, and ties in perfectly to the first game, but she's better off as a non-playable villain, not the main character for half of the most anticipated game in years. Overall, The Last of Us Part 2 is not a bad game and is worth playing through once, but it will come as a disappointment to die hard fans of the series. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Was really hesitant to play this game after I saw user reviews. Since it was on sale few weeks ago decided that it is worth the money and tried it out on PS5.
So in a sense would way that this game is not a 5.7 as users describe it. Also it is not a 93 as metacritic describes it. I gave it a 7 which is right in the middle of both.
Best part of this game is visuals. It is pin point to a smallest detail and I loved it, a breath taking display. Also "Naughty Dog" introduced a lot of configuration which should become standard in every game. Kudos to the team under technical stuff and designers. A fantastic job.
Now to a part that makes it 7. A story. It was a disrespect to a first game. It was full of plot holes and uncharacteristic decisions by Ellie, Tommy and Joel. Also what does a pregnant woman do in a battle field? It does not show that she is independent or strong. It just shows that she is stupid and does not care for a child. With all things a side, the story would have been acceptable if it was not for the last chapter which destroyed Ellie and Tommy as a characters. Speaking about Abby. She is not that bad. Not great and not terrible as well. Not much to say more...
To sum up, if it was a spin off, it would be 8-9 as a game, now it is 6-7 due to poorly written character story lines.

At some point during its development, its ambitious ideas became an insurmountable obstacle for its own success and it sadly brought down the experience provided by the first title.

The concept here was "The never-ending cycle of violence" (these are the author's words not mine). This adventure carefully constructs and delivers upon that idea while forgetting this is a videogame.

Interactivity, you see, is a boon and a curse. Audiences can be taught important lessons through media and art. But they're not supposed to feel patronized for decisions that are being made for them. By restricting the player's actions, pacing, and choices at critical moments (which I won't spoil) the suspension of disbelief is shattered and we just follow this dramatic narrative that often undermines its own ideas.

It is difficult to justify any other criticisms regarding its story or pace without spoiling interested players, so I prefer to leave it at that. What's crucial here is realizing that games of this nature derive most if not all of their value in the strength and delivery of their narratives. So a failure here means catastrophe for such a piece.

There are simply better, more engaging, and interesting shooters, survival horror games, and even zombie revenge stories out there.

The presentation is superb, in every sense of the word. From audio engineering to accessibility options, the full playthrough is a sight-to-behold that even if impressive, never quite subverts expectations in a breath-taking way.

The gameplay is basically an expanded and refined version of what was on offer before. More enemy variety, verticality and challenge better the experience. Pacing for these more "action-focused" sections is a bit worse though.

The Last of Us - Part: II will always serve as an example of how not to take advantage of a medium to tell a story but it is otherwise an amazing looking game with gameplay refinements over a well-received first entry.

P.S. A bit sad I never did hear my own name when blowing up a dude's head though.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In short:
The gameplay is amazing. Graphics are insane.
The story is meh, Pacing is way off. We all know revenge is bad and takes you to a darker place. But the physical, emotional and general consequences lack for the Abby character.
Abby lacks a story arc and is a general bloodthirsty psycho, as evidenced by various cutscenes, and her gameplay (she does kill her friends with no remorse). She is as sellfish as they come. The writers try so hard to make you feel bad for her, but her characterization makes the opposite.

    I will give two examples:
Abby decides to torture Joel. After he saved her. Her friends are in on this, knowing full well he saved her.
Her words to Dina, as she knows that she is pregnant, while having a knife to her throat are "Good".
(And looking at Lev makes her stop? Give me a break!)

Her arc is a fetch quest, that is filler. Her arc does not make sense, why would a bloodthirsty psycho want to help two kids? Never explained.

In all honesty while Ellie doesn't become a better person, it is clear why most players sided with her and wanted her to succeed. Her character is written better.

Overall I wish this game had a multiple choice ending. Sparing Abby, Killing Abby or getting Killed by Abby. That would be realistic and far more consequential .

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us Part II,

Unfortunately the game has become heavily review-bombed (on both ends), diminishing the value of user scores significantly. In my opinion this is a shame as user scores used to be something I always payed attention to when buying games.

The story of the game is very good. The creative direction it took is absolutely justified considering the ending of "Last of Us I", where the protagonist effectively becomes the antagonist of the story pretty much wiping out an entire faction/hospital dedicated to helping humanity fight the virus. Creating a sequel around the consequences of Joel's actions there is a really good starting point. Playing characters from both sides adds depth to the story and you'll start questioning the actions of your previously favourite characters soon enough - without either side acting out of character.

The gameplay does not differ much from "Last of Us Part I". Stealth is still massively rewarded on high difficulties as you can get heavily punished for little mistakes in open combat. Lower difficulties do not punish you for brute forcing your way through the encounters as much. Open areas are almost always accompanied by dialog making them less monotonous while exploring or searching for collectibles.
The upgrade system has not changed much

My biggest problem with the game is the actual length of the game and replay value. You can finish the game within 15 hours and since it is heavily carried by the story and character development a second playtrough (needed for platinum) felt really boring. It probably gets replay value after putting it away for a year tho'.

By taking out a beloved character so early in the story, they quickly alienated a large portion of the fanbase that was strongly attached to the core characters from the first game. What followed was two stories of revenge, back and forth, trying to pull you into both sides of the story with many new characters, but was somewhat unsuccessful, and it had an ending that felt a bit empty. I liked the game for the most part, but definitely did not tug on the same emotional strings that the first game did, the game was quite entertaining, but the story was a bit of a disappointment. The gameplay is in my personal opinion a 10/10 its fun, tense and well crafted. And then there is the story... and yes I understand why people were disapointed, and in fact so was i, some of the things that happend made me think why did they choose this? After playing the game twice i sat down and broke down for my self why i thought this. There is an amazing tale here but for the end to be: oh I got revenge so you shouldnt boo hoo go home Ellie. If it had been handled just a bit diffrently it would have been 10/10, so if they choose to make a third game, all i hope is that they think about what the fanbase wants and what makes sense for the characters they have to use, because you can have the best character but if you ignore what they stand for and is written for then of course fans will retaliate with hate and disapointment. My hope is that the director for the first game comes back because to me, he gets the universe and the characters Expand

Whoever is giving this a TEN I dont know how you could. This game is way too long and get so repetitive. Some of those Abby missions were so irritating not because its Abby but rather its the repetitiveness of them. You literally do the same stuff with Ellie in similar surroundings. I know why they did it but my god they could have done it a different way. Why not just send us to the crane earlier on then send us to the island instead of all the other crap that we did already with Ellie. Trust me this game is great but its needs a haircut.

I think I have to mention the story cause this games selling point is the story. Not the zombies, there is plenty of zombie games. Not the gameplay, there's better gameplay in many other games. Its the story. People didnt think ohhhh cant wait to rummage through a load of cabinets in this 40 hour game. No. Its the story. The story gets a passing grade.

What a pass? How? Well Im glad you asked. Your on a revenge mission with Ellie and thats not interesting to be fair. But the killing of Joel you feel the same as Ellie. You must get after Abby. You must. We must. And as you progress through the game its goes pretty with the odd flashback with Joel in their which reminds you what your fighting for. That man that you've played as, that Ellie was mentored by and was essentially her father. And then when you come out of the flashbacks your back to the reality that Abby took him from us. Your motivated again.

Now the story takes a dramatic turn at the theater where you play 10 hours of Abby. Huh! Thats just just weird. And you basically just play the game again but as Abby. The story just stops and restarted again. The game just stopped and restarted again. And dont get me wrong there are some great game moments and story moments in there but it belongs in a DLC or as an after game unlock or something like that. Just shoving it in there is jarring. And you play as Abby in the theater going after Ellie. Again weird choice. Maybe make that a choice. You play as Abby or as Ellie. Its a game after all

Look its a good game but its long. The story is a bit of a mess and the way it was put together was even messier. And yeah Joel dieing sucks but thats not a game breaker for me. There is just no pay off with it. Some characters are inconsistent. Now I heard its full of SJW stuff. Yeah maybe some but thats not the issue here. This game had some ideas where to go but they skipped a few steps and now we have a game with great mechanics but the story is probably still on the second draft while the first game had maybe 13 drafts.

Seven out of Ten. And I felt horrible playing it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay is amazing, visuals are unreal, AI is insane, but my issue lies within the execution of the story. The last of us is one of my favorite game of all times, like most who played the sequel. While I knew Joel was probably going to be killed off, I hated that they did it so early. I get it was for shock, but it took them a decade to finally release a sequel and they just rip the guy out immediately. They could have done so much between the two characters they spent the entire first game establishing, but they decided to kill on off for shock value, and introduce one by really forcing in the presence of someone who they didn't acknowledge in the first game. The ending of the first was so iconic but then they just casually changed it for the sequel to make sense. Yes, Joel killed everyone to get Elly back, but the gameplay I performed wasn't what happened in the flashback in the second. Really took me out of it and made me hate the rest of the game. Including trying to get me to feel for the Abby character, which I didn't at all. Hated playing as her and I hated the switching between characters when I was hoping for a more RPG gear build up of one character. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game isn't without its flaws but people are flaming it to hard. Its still a great game and if you enjoyed the 1st one (Which was no doubt better then the part 2) then you would still enjoy this one.
The good parts of the game is that the combat has been improved and headshots are a 1 shot kill as they weren't before.
Crafting is slightly better although for some reason Abby (Not Ellie) can't craft arrows. God forgive these devs for making such a dumb decision.
The story is great and was a good continuation of the previous game. It of course had a high bar to live up to which being honest I don't think it quite made it but I it would have been near impossible to do so.
The graphics are more than something to brag about. The attention to detail is gotta be the best I've seen in a game before. Even small things for example the shotgun ammo on the stock is what ammo you got left. If you have 2 regular and 2 incendiary on the stock it will have 2 yellow and 2 red. Small things like that really bring the game more to life.
I loved how we got more groups in this one. The WLF's, the Scars, The Rattlers... They are all different and have different ambitions and survive in different ways. Not necessarily good ways thou. You would be lying if you thought the whistling of the scars wasn't cool asf.

The downsides were that stealth still kind of sucked. I understood the 1st game slacking a bit because it was originally made on the Ps3. But a late entry to the Ps4 there is no excuse for it being how it was. It was like it hadn't been worked on at all from the previous game. In a game where you can barely carry any ammo and body shots take 5 to kill someone so your only option is stealth to pick a as many if not all your enemies off and it was that basic just disappoints me. I could have 10 dead bodies piled up in 1 place. The enemy would see it, look around for 30 seconds and forget all about it. They should be hunting you down like a pack of wolfs (Pun intended).
Lack of zombie encounters. This series was made on zombies yet when you see them you kill a 3 or 4 and move on. At 1 point we kill some big ass multi mutation which was awesome but why do we only get that once? I wish we got to fight off huge hordes and stuff.. Why is it always, you go into a building and there is a couple infected to remind you that they exist, you gotta a kill them and after you move on. If there has been an outbreak then I'm shocked because if this is half of the worlds population then you live in some deadass place. The 1st game had loads of zombies and it was awesome. In this one its all about the WLFs and Scars with a hint of zombie. You have given us less of what we love.
Abby should have been able to craft arrows. She has no way in crafting stealth material. I feel like you wanted to make her less stealthy and more guns blazing but if that was the case why can she carry a small amount of ammo? She should be able to carry 3 if not 4 clips not 1 and a half. (including the 1 in the gun).
We played to much of abby. Don't get me wrong I loved seeing her side to things and thought it was awesome her she had her own attributed and guns but I feel like I played her more then Ellie if not near half and half. This game is a continuation of the 1st game and Ellie is on the cover so why did I spend near half of the game playing as someone else? Just my point of view others may be different.
The characters didn't have as much emotion as the 1st one. I am not sure if that's the right way to put it but say for example in the 1st one where Joel starts off not liking Ellie cos of his Daughter and then he ends up liking her and looks at her as his own. Not replacing his daughter but putting the care he had for her into Ellie instead. In part 2 the character were more straight forward. I mite be overlooking something thou.

I think it would have been cool if we got to know more of the characters better. We don't know a single thing about these people? Like who the hell were they before the infection? Or if they were born after then why don't they talk about various things they enjoy. The conversation is always present based. Just thought I would throw that in there cos I found it kind of strange.

The summaries the game is still amazing. Not as good as the 1st but damn it would have been hard to live up to such a game. This is has improvements from the 1st but I think some areas weren't improved enough like the stealth mechanics. Which is a huge part of the game. Or why the hell can I find half a container? Surely all containers should come as 1 objects not 4. I hope we do get a part 3 although its hard to say with how this one ended. We could find out if Abby finds the fireflies or if Ellie ends up back at home or does she continue to fight off the infected and found another group to survive alongside? Does her life now consist of saving people from hunters/rattlers? I hope we get to find out!

The game aint better or worse than the last. The Story just continues and yes Joel´s death hit hard and it really took a while until I could continue playing but it really kept me playin. I loved every second hunting for his murderer and I hated every second playin her but she has a Story and I ended up not liking Abby but at least understanding her. No Improvement in Gameplay or anything new to mention otherwise (except the Graphics of course), but I didnt really expected that to happen anyway after the first game because what do you wanna change? Its all fine?
    loot,kill,cutscene/storytalk - repeat
    perfect for me.
3 points away for not making a multiplayer because: Just a Story? not even choices? No unlockable Outfits like in the first part? No Replayability I would say even though ive replayed the first one like 8 times and im now on my 2nd playthrough with the second part because it still delivers the thrill and a good Story on top ( only if youre not too sensible I guess, seeing all those crying people cursing the writers as edgy teenagers haha)

Probably just dudes bein dudes anyway cant stand a women killing their male mc.

But the Game gives me exactly what I wished for. If not for whats missing id give the Game for what it has a solid 9. The end was really shaking me up but I didnt get that ultimate finisher, like that was already Joels death

'Could' have been. However, the story and character dynamics is what draws the line, hence my inability to rate this game any higher than 7. Every side character in TLOU2 are one-dimensional to the point that it hurt my brain. I adore a good relationship build-up between 2 characters amidst a zombie apocalypse. But Ellie & Dina? I hate how the game tried to shove them down my throat. Like no, I don't care about them. They have no chemistry, I don't know anything about Dina (neither do i want to, because she's so one-dimensional and a burden). When the game made me control Abby in the second half, at first I was angry like most others but at one point, i gave up on the anger and decided to look at the story from a new perspective. Even from an unbiased point of view, Abby's story arc is a cheap rip-off of TLOU1. Lazy writing, just a lazy attempt at manipulating the player's emotions into liking Abby. It didn't work, though. I still didn't like her. Her height phobia was a good detail, for the sake of comedic relief. The addition of a cult like Seraphites is an interesting idea, on paper. But the game couldn't even make a cult arc good. They deserved an award for this abomination. In conclusion, the gameplay makes up partially for the bad writing. Instead of 'The Last of Us Part Two', if it were a whole different game with characters you've never seen before, maybe-- just MAYBE this game would have been worthy of a higher rating. But, oh well. The acting, graphics, animation and sound design are all excellent and the music is good though not on the same level as that from the first game. When you get out of the monotony of stealth and scavenging, the gameplay can be fun because the characters are agile, responsive, and generally great to play as. The guns feel "weighty" and are just satisfying to fire. It's just that the brutal gameplay and all the killing feels contradictory to the themes and message of the story and i found that to be a game breaking issue. It broke immersion and made it hard for me to buy into the feelings and motivations of the characters. Otherwise, It's packed to the brim with difficulty and accessibility options though i never really made use of them.

Overall, it feels good to play but as a story driven game, the story is the most important thing and though i don't hate it, it's easily the weakest part of the game. This game is even more grim, bleak and depressing than the first game and without any glimmer of hope. Gone are the loveable and relatable characters of the first game to be replaced with husks who barely resemble them. For some characters, it makes sense how they got to where they are in the story but they just aren't interesting anymore. Plenty of the added characters are shallow and one-note. I found it hard to care about their conflicts. The core themes of the story are often undermined by the gameplay and there are serious problems with the pacing. The game is far too long, and there are too many tension breaking flashbacks that i'd argue are ineffective in their purposes. On top of that, the resolution to the story feels rushed, unsatisfying and unearned. There are also numerous coincidences, conveniences and contrivances in the story but those are more nitpicks than legitimate grievances.

Like i said, it's good in everything but story. It's admirable that is this is a story that dares to take risks and it isn't all bad actually. There are some genuinely excellent moments and heartfelt scenes sprinkled in here but they are overwhelmed by a story that just wasn't executed properly. If Druckmann played around more with the placement of the flashbacks, gave some characters more to do, and cut certain parts of the story, i'd have liked this more.

For me, the most entertainment came from the dynamic gore system, where enemies have 5 destructible points (limbs and head). In a funny, almost masochistic way, it was fun blowing up limbs while your enemies cried out to their fallen comrades. It made me feel like the world saw my character as a threat, which is a rare feeling that few games capture.

Overall, it succeeds in areas where the first game failed, and failed where the first game succeeded. Definitely worth the bargain bin price.

At the time I probably would've given the game a 4 or a 5 due to its very inconsistent story-telling, how little I cared for the characters, and how the game dragged on loads towards the end. But after playing the game a second time through and watching others play it, i've leaned towards understanding this game a little bit more. I appreciate the vast beauty of this game, and its much improved gameplay from the first. I enjoy the brutality of the story and the point its trying to tell. However, I still have those same thoughts on the framing of the game as a whole. The story, albeit very different from the first seems as if it was caught in some sort of rewrite, there are points in the story where it seems its trying to hammer home this idea of the cycle of revenge and brutality, where other points it seems to try to call back to the first game. This detracts from the story in my opinion as I would much rather prefer that the game be hammered home in either direction, either take it in the way of The Last of Us, or hammer home your new idea for a story, don't get cold feet trying to do both. The also relative inconsistencies in the story and how little it seems to do to make us care for certain characters certainly detracts from the game. But my BIGGEST complaint of the story is the arbitrary split in the middle of the game, I strongly feel that if the game had simply had both sides of the story running alongside each other, the game would've felt smoother and not dragged on as much towards the end. To me, it makes no logical sense why you would write a story that builds all the way up for 8~ hours up to a climax, just to cut away to another 8~ hours of gameplay to make us go through the whole process again. While ive come to appreciate the game more than I originally did, there still are some story concepts and writing that I cannot wrap my head around. However, I would still probably tell you to give this game a watch or playthrough as it definitely is one to watch. Expand

The graphics fighting mechanisms, gameplay, sound, everything in this game is PERFECT. unfortunately though it a story nobody really nobody wanted to see. The person who wrote the story must be a sadist. If you like Joel and Ellie please do not play this game because they have managed to completely destroy those 2 characters. They completely ruined the glare the first game had. For me it is a sequel that should have never been. I have no comments on having to play half of the game with a character I hate just watching her face. Whilst the graphics are some of the best I've ever seen in a next gen title and I love the gameplay, the narrative and characters are mixed. The main problem with the story is the pacing. It's so bad. Being required to play as Abby for 10 hours is absurd. Even worse, Abby's subplot isn't even relevant. This is why the message on trust is murky. Joel is killed off way too fast. Killing him off isn't bad in concept. It's the execution that completely failed. My question is; Why is Joel killed off before it's revealed that Joel killed Abby's Dad. This portrays Abby as unsympathetic and hard to feel bad for. Ellie is such a fantastic character. A sequel where Ellie is the main playable character frustrates me because I can see the masterpiece it was so destined to be. Ellie makes this game from a 6 to a 7. She's definitely one of the most tragic characters in gaming. The ending where she finds out she can't play her guitar Joel gave her because she lost fingers because revenge took over her. And this is the Last of Us 2 I wanted. A mostly flawless masterpiece with stunning graphics, smooth gameplay and likeable characters. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU1 got maximum points from me. Why didn’t TLOU2 get it? There are three main reasons for this:
    1. The way Joel died was just horrible.
    2. Playing as Abby was a forced activity that I would not have wanted to do.
    3. Story.

This game feels different compared to the first game. It does have some new game mechanics compared to the first game (for example crawling and dodge possibilities), but nothing very different. Infected behavior is a little bit different and the sound they make is also refined. It takes time to get used to, especially if you've just played through TLOU1.

I remember in TLOU1 trying to get past the doctor without harming him, but the game wouldn't allow it. It was just frustrating. And now Joel paid a high price for it. Joels death was too cruel for me as I loved his character and played with him over 10 hours in the first TLOU game. I felt like I was ready to stop playing the game after that scene. But I forced myself to play to find out what would happen to Ellie.
On Ellie`s gameplay, you don’t get powerful weapons (for example shotgun and plantable bomb) if you don’t search every corner and every house. I can only imagine how hard the game is without these.

Playing as Abby went on and on, felt like never ending. I noticed that playing as Abby on normal difficulty was significantly harder than playing as Ellie. It was fun that Abby had a dog and I got to use it a few times at first, but that was about it. Most of the time the dog was not with Abby. WLF always keeps dogs with them, but somehow Abby only had it in the beginning. I don’t get it. Fighting Tommy, aka Joel's brother, was especially uncomfortable as Abby. Tommy was very good with his sniper rifle and could easily take Abby down as he took already the whole WLF team down. I absolutely did not want to play that part, and it felt so wrong. Elli and Abby's fight in the theater was particularly strange. Elli was so much stronger (shotgun, etc.) that she could have easily killed Abby. But the game didn't allow it!

There are a lot of flash backs, and I repeatedly lost track of where I was and what I was doing. I've never seen so many flash backs in any game than this one.

So, Ellie is gay and is dating a woman, Abby is like a man, and there is a dedicated chapter to transgender girl/boy. What did I just play? It does not make any sense at all. Abby had sex with Owen but for some reason didn't get pregnant. Owen had sex with another woman (Mel) and quickly got her pregnant. You can't fail to notice these kinds of strange things.

If you have played TLOU1 and are thinking about playing TLOU2, I recommend not playing it. Joel did what he had to do with all those who wanted to hurt Elli. This game is not worth ruining the beautiful memories of Joel.

The Last of Us Part II takes the gameplay foundation laid by the first game and expands on it, but not always in positive ways. The cycling of human and infected enemies still keeps the experience pleasantly variegated, and to each group new classes have been added. These additions aren't unique enough to meaningfully shake up the experience, but the new ways in which we can approach them definitely do: dodging and counterattacking are rewarding new mechanics that make melee offense a much more worthwhile option, layering combat significantly, just like hiding in the tall grass, underneath vehicles and underwater amplifies the strategic options for stealth. Alas, these improvements, and combat as a whole, is severely undermined by the overwhelming size of areas. Levels are much bigger than they were in the first game, and although this might seem like a clear improvement, it becomes apparent after a while that their bigger size often makes the experience significantly worse than before. Areas are now so big that it often becomes extremely, embarassingly easy to alert the enemy only to then run away far enough to make their AI lose your tracks. By repeating this, the player can easily trivialize a significant chunk of the game, only because areas are so big that they allow you to. Nonetheless, many areas are contained enough to prevent this, and the human AI is notably improved since the first game. Plus, exploration is always rewarding thanks to the hunt for materials, greatly immersive, and environmental puzzles are now decently creative, if still repetitive. The characters of The Last of Us Part II retain the same level of believability and psychological depth that made the first game special, but the story itself lacks the same spark, being thematically repetitive as it is entirely devoted to a moral lesson that is extremely overused in media.

The narrative was always emotionally compelling, and the emotional roller coaster was intense, heartbreaking, and enlightening. But, it failed to achieve for me what the game was trying to do. I found difficulty sympathizing with characters, new and old, a problem that wasn't present in the first game. I found that The Last of Us Part II was very different than part I. Part I focused on paternal love, where part II focused much on hate. This of course isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the tone change was a hard roadblock to get over. The immense complexity and depth of the characters was clearly evident, however the story tended to cut corners in unsatisfying and seemingly lazy ways. The biggest failure was the pacing. The narrative tried to achieve parallel plot structure but chose to go down both narratives one at a time instead of neck and neck, even playing sections of the game in the past which eliminated a sense of surprise in coming events. The verdict; The Last of Us Part II challenged me emotionally and followed a mostly satisfying narrative supported by incredible gameplay, but the narrative shortcomings and very poor pacing tainted the experience. Play the Last of Us Part I first, and then I implore you to experience Part II and come to your own conclusion. Expand

The graphics are impressive even 5 years after it's release, especially when it comes to face expression and details. My only problem with it is the story, and NO, I'm not talking about Joel being killed in the first 2 hours. My biggest problems with it's ending.

Basically after going a rampage for about 15 hours looking for Joel's murderer, Ellie decides to have a family with her girlfriend, Dina, and her son. If you ask me, that would've been the perfect ending for Ellie, where she realizes that revenge wouldn't make her feel any better, and how all that **** is behind her now, but she decides to go after Abby again, making the game 3-4 hours longer than it needed to be.
All of that culminates in Ellie fighting Abby, letting her go, going back home and realising her family moved away.
All of that makes you feel that all of the time you spent on the game was completely thrown away. I even thought the game would still carry on after that part because it just doesn't feel like an ending at all if you ask me. But it's still a good game at the end of the day.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us has so far been my favorite game I've ever played. The story was amazing and Joel and Ellie's relationship made me care so much about the characters. And then it was ruined by this game and FREAKING ABBY! The choice to kill Joel in the beginning of the game was a very odd one especially when people still cared about their story. And as time goes on they try and show us all these things about Joel and Ellie's relationship at the settlement but it doesn't do much considering he's, you know, dead! However, moving past this, I think the game is highly underrated. Despite its flaws in story, I think the overall game is pretty good. The gameplay is still pretty good, the stealth... exists. I think the overall game is pretty good. There's one part that I want to talk about though: Abby. Abby is supposed to be Ellie if she was... well, "evil". Abby and Ellie are the same in many ways except Abby moves on after killing Joel. Ellie however goes on this mass killing spree but it goes crazy once you have to play as Abby for 12 hours. This is my least favorite thing in the game. I shouldn't have to be forced to feel sympathetic for a villain. I wanted to kill Abby as soon as she swung a club at Joel but NO! We just have to feel bad for Abby because all of her friends are dead in this back and forth between her and Ellie. And don't get me started on Abby's relationship with the tiny children that I can't remember the name of. I'm supposed to feel really bad for these kids who are apart of a freaking cult. Like why! I think this is Naughtydog's way of showing that Ellie and Abby aren't so different. In the end nothing freaking happens. Abby almost dies and Ellie abandons Dina and her child so she can go fight some woman that almost murdered her. Ellie then spares Abby because she realizes that it's "not what Joel would've wanted". Like IT TOOK YOU THAT LONG! If we were going to go through this whole game then why are we only doing this now?

Okay enough complaining. I've already said what I like gameplay wise, but I've just complained about the story. I do like the story of the game there's just a lot of odd points that annoy me. Anyways, I think having Dina come with Ellie was a good idea. It gave Ellie and the player someone to care about and also built up their relationship. I think it would've been stupid to have Ellie not be with Dina and then at the end have Ellie and Dina be super close.

Okay, I've been complaining a lot and yes I get that, but in reality, I do love this game. It's not the greatest sequel but I think it showed that The Last of Us was never about Joel. It was about Ellie and her story the whole time. This was a good sequel, not a great sequel, but not a bad one.
So in conclusion I think The Last of Us Part 2 is a very underrated game that deserves a bit more love, even if all I can focus on is the negative. (That's just because I have a complaining problem after 2 years of complaining on a podcast)

There isn't always a lot of ammo and shooting both people and infected has never felt so fun. The stealth was also so fun and so filled with tension. The story is where this game kinda falls apart. There are a lot of plot holes and contrivances. I also thought that the game was kinda in the wrong order. You first play as Ellie and then you play as another character and you play through the same days as you did Ellie. If you rearrange the scenes, it becomes a lot less messy. At first, the direction the story took seemed baffling, but over time, I grew to understand why they took the route they took. Another problem is that many of the character deaths don't have that huge of an effect on the story. Other than that though... Idk, I didn't really hate this at all. This was great. To me personally, plot holes don't really ruin a story for me, unless there is nothing holding the story together and I wouldn't really say that counts for this game. The discourse around The Last of Us Part 2 went really well didn’t it. On one side we have the mainstream critics with their heads so far up their own arse they are unable to properly critically engage with a game like this and ended up just giving it 10s. Then on the other side we have a large chunk of the gaming community being a bunch of immature children unable to deal with a piece of media/art. The truth is The Last of Us Part 2 is a well made and ambitious game. But unfortunately the developers may have bit off more than they could chew and the game is a bit of a mess that didn’t land right.

The most important thing to say about The Last of Us Part 2 is I am so glad they tried and that they were allowed to try. Most games in the AAA space are so safe. The fact that nobody stepped in at any point to say just give us a safe, predictable sequel and that Naughty Dog was permitted to do their thing is excellent. Naughty Dog could have just given us a basic journey across the country with Joel and Ellie on some simple revenge quest but instead they aimed higher and tried to deliver a grand, ambitious game about hate. I really hope the backlash to this game doesn’t cause future AAA games to be even more risk averse because that would be sad to see as AAA games are already, typically too frightened of interesting characters/stories, challenging and/or new gameplay, real puzzles, bold style, old genres, etc.

The most obvious thing is this game looks phenomenal. This is as good as it gets on PS4. The attention to detail is staggering. The number of unique objects and animations in this game is ridiculous. I cannot stress enough how impressive it is. I don’t think anyone else is even close to being on the same level as Naughty Dog. All aspects of the presentation including visuals, attention to detail, atmosphere, sound, acting performances, how well it runs, etc, is all top notch and if this was the only thing games were rated on then maybe a 10/10 wouldn’t be so silly.

The gameplay is exactly what you expect if you have played the first game. It is solid and enjoyable but not exceptional. They make a number of sensible improvements over the first game, like going prone to hide under things and to crawl through grass. I really enjoyed that the areas are larger and more vertical which allowed combat encounters to be more dynamic and free. Resources are just limited enough to keep you changing up your weapon and approach. The combat is very violent and visceral and the AI reacts pretty well to what you are doing both verbally and mechanically. I had a good time jumping out of stealth causing some horrific carnage and then diving back into stealth. The environmental puzzles felt more varied this time too. However the game regularly wasted my time and the gameplay just isn’t enough to keep me coming back for multiple playthroughs. It also feels like a missed opportunity. They could have done more with the gameplay especially with two playable characters.

Now for the games biggest issues; story, characters and pacing. First of all this game is a bloater, god damn why is it so long? An editor needed to come along a just cut so much fat off this game. The pacing is a complete mess and most of the time feels too slow. It starts off way too long and slow. Then there are two middle sections both of which are a little too long, then a long lead up to the end and then the actual end. The returning characters are great but the new ones are just nothing. I still remember Tess, Bill, David, Sam, Henry, Marlene and even Ish from the first game. But I can’t remember the names of these side characters and I don’t care enough to look them up. The story is a mix of highs and lows there are some excellent moments and I really liked the ending. But there are plenty of moments that just do not land at all and so much that I just didn’t connect with. The whole thing is too contrived as well.

The other big issues I have are no multiplayer and no replayability. The Factions multiplayer was so damn good in the first game and I know a lot of people won’t understand it but for me it was one the best multiplayer experiences ever and a big part of why I bought the remaster. It hurts that it just isn’t here and still to this day there is no new multiplayer released. I also can’t bring myself to play through this more than twice, which was enough to get the platinum trophy, even though I finished the first game 7 times. It’s too long and bloated and wastes too much time and the gameplay isn’t enough to pull me back in.

The Last of Us Part 2 is a must play for anyone that played the first game and if you haven’t then what are you doing here, go play the first one. You really should play this for yourself. Don’t listen to the mainstream critics or the angry gamers. Play it and form your own opinions. I think it is a really good but uneven game and I would still easily recommend it.
