Was okay with 16 hours of playing as Ellie and went along with the story that started to make sense within the last 5 hours and leaving you with a suspense scene, the game then interrupts the whole flow of the story and forces you to play as Abby. Okay sure I'll go along with it, after 2 hours of playing Abbys part I realised how repetitive and unrewarding the looting is.

Playing as Ellie and unlocking most her skills tree was fine but to expect me to play a new character and having to start over with a new skill tree and having scavenge all over again to upgrade my weapons and skill is just painfully tedious and repetitive. I have been playing on hard so the ammo are scaled to 1-2 per find and scrap parts are as low as 2-10 (excluding safe openings).

    So...
    A) The game stops you at 16 hours and leave you with a suspense scene, then expects you to play as another character you clearly know you don't like.
    B) You start from the very beginning after the "drastic" event that happened as the new character, which made that "drastic" decision.
    C) You have scavenge and craft upgrades for the weapons and level the new characters skill tree all over again.

In short, I did not continue after 2 hours of playing Abby's part of the game. I could not bring myself to through play through the rest of the game as it is tedious and repetitive and also I don't play unlikeable characters that clearly does not deserve playtime or a complete story from beginning to end. As for the rest of the story I guess I'll have to watch the rest of gameplay as I can't stand to play over the game's leveling and crafting mechanic.

This game just disappoints and makes me sad, considering that i loved the first game. There is so many things that don't make sense in the story context. But story apart it's still a good game with its gameplay and open environments.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. -Graphics: 10, nothing to say about the graphics, this is the best looking PS4 game.
-Gameplay: 7, a little repetitive, nothing out of the ordinary compared to the first game.
-Story: 4, this is where it gets worse. The game obviously wants you to think that revenge is bad and stuff, but you don't really UNDERSTAND the message, the game makes you feel it by throwing shocking, violent scenes that are made to disgust you. The motivation of the characters are sometimes really confusing, I don't get why Abby tortured Joel on purpose for seemingly no reason; she didn't have to do that. This is why I don't like Abby, even at the end of the game. The game wants you to hate her in the beginning, and then you have to forgive her and to see her as a "nice person". I think it's really hard to go through all of these emotions after a character TORTURED a beloved character from the first game, especially after hating her so much in the beginning. I get what they wanted to do but it's executed poorly, with a lot of (too many) plot holes to help the story.
-Sounds and OST: 9, the musics are as good as the first game, and sounds are well done.
-Characters: 3, I didn't really like all the secondary characters like Dina and Jesse, even though I felt something during Jesse's death, so that's good I guess. Lev and Yara are meh, I didn't care when Yara died, and if Lev were to die, I wouldn't care either. The worst ones are Abby's friends, mainly because I don't care about Abby's life and stuff. I just want them to die (I was even happy when Manny died), or I just don't care about them because I know they will die in the first place. And for the characters in the first game, I really don't think they are the same. Joel death in particular, was just really stupid. I get that after 4 years being at Jackson, he became more human, but I didn't see that before he gets killed. Flashbacks where he is actually nice come AFTER he died. Again, poorly executed.
-Pacing: 3, I really didn't like playing as Abby. I actually didn't want to play as her, I just did it to see the ending and what happened in the theater. Also, Ellie's first day in Seattle is boring. I would've preferred to play as Abby 10 hours before Joel's death, because after she kills Joel what's even the point to make me appreciate her? I just didn't want to play as someone that killed someone I like, especially in a dumb situation like that.
All of this makes an overral score of 6, which is in my opinion a fair score. I don't why you would put a perfect score if you played the first game, but I also don't get why you would score a 0 because Joel dies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have very mixed feelings about the game. I don't think it's as good as critics say but also not as terrible as most people who played it say. First of all the game design, graphics, controls and customization is amazing. The attention to detail is unlike anything we've ever seen in a ps exclusive. Ellie's arc was great overall, with deep development and a good ending. The only problem i have with the ending is that i think it's unrealistic how Ellie's decides that she should give up on avenging Joel when she drowns Abby instead of when she cut her open and heard her scream. Abby's is pretty bad tho. The reason why she killed Joel is bc he killed her father. That is understandable, she went through a lot of pain for him but the big problem is that Abby's dad was the real bad guy. He only died bc he took Ellie away. Ellie was like Joel's daughter and after losing Sarah, it's only understandable why he would react that way. By that, she made Ellie feel the same way as she did, thus creating a cycle of hatred and yet, Abby wonders why Ellie comes after her to kill her. Abby would even kill Dina and Ellie's friends even tho they didn't do anything. Abby's friends were responsible for Joel's death so unlike Abby, Ellie definitely had a reason to kill them. In short, Ellie's development was great, Abby's was terrible bc it feels like avenging bad people for 10 hours. Expand

This game is one big drama. Characters are to suffer in every moment of their life's. There is nothing positive about this world. The game tries to force you to share the drama, but after a moment you just stop caring. There is no contrast, almost no happy moments. Technically thr game is great. Visuals are great, but the game is exhausting and negative.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 is a game that does a good job at improving the gameplay and visuals over its predecesor...but it's narrative brings it down to a poorly executed pretentious product...that underestimates the intelligence of its audience and is (seemingly) not aware of its own hipocrisssy. Just to give a perspective, the balance between narrative and gameplay in this game can be divided like this: 30% pure combat gameplay, 30% exploration and basic gameplay, and 40% narrative driven sequences. So, having that much narrative makes this game rely a bit too much in its story to move things forward. You feel like you wanna see what happens next, and in that sense the narrative sequences become kind of a reward for the player. Given this, is very hard to judge the game as a whole without the story. And it's a shame that the story in itself suffers from the pretentious intentios behind it. There are pacing issues, there are plotholes, there are badly hidden plot devices and stuff that may (an will) pull you out of the experience. It's hard to get into details without spoiling the game but let me say that you have 2 main protagonists, and the intention of the creators to give a message that is stronger than their skills to build a believable story around it. You have main characters treated like plot devices, you have circumstances that are way too fortuituos to be real, many forced situations just to serve the writers intentions behind them. In most cases it just doesn't work well enough to make it believable. There's a 2nd character that you'll be forced to use for half the game, and they try so hard to make her appealing that it also can put you off the experience. But the worst thing is the epilogue...a forced, hilariously long and convoluted epilogue that does more to lessen the overall ecperience than enrich it. The ending must be one of the pointless things I have ever played and watched in my life. It leaves you empty, and wondering what was the point of even doing this game. To me is not a bad game/experience, but is for sure not a good one. Is just a "meh". Maybe it's worst for those who loved the first one and it's characters. On a final note, just say that there are many subliminal and also on your face messages that will remind you of that so called "secret agenda" form Neil Druckman, and it also can pull you off the experience. From religious statements, to forcing certain type of characters, to making all white males die or be useless or dumb, and a long list that I felt does not add to this review. To me is an experience to have just if you get the game in a very good sale. Expand

Part II nails a number of things that make most games great. The controls feel incredibly tight and fluid. The presentation is remarkable, and will likely end up being the best of this console generation. The voice acting and motion capture is top-notch, as we've come to expect from Naughty Dog over the past decade. Yet despite all of this, I can never see myself replaying it. In fact, I would struggle to recommend this game to anyone; especially not fans of the original game.

In many ways, the Last of Us Part II falls into the same mistakes that made The Last Jedi reviled by most fans of that franchise. In an attempt to be subversive, Naughty Dog loses sight of what made the first game so universally loved by critics AND fans. In an attempt to be poignant, they just come off seeming pretentious.

To make matters worse, the latter half of the game amounts to what is essentially an aimless side-quest, with the only motivation to push through coming from the promise of a pay-off in the finale which never comes.

Part II is a visually stunning game, but when the glitter wears off, all we're left with is a story for masochists who enjoy being taught a lesson they already know.

The original TLoU is a masterpiece, and I'm really sad to see how Naughty Dog has ruined it. I'm not gonna review this game because it's already done for many people. I just come to say that this is not the game that they have been selling us during years. It's like if in the new God of War, someone kills Kratos and then Santa Monica forces us to play with his killer.
TLoU Part II is an offense to all the fans of the first game. They forced us to empathize with someone we don't care about. They have been selling us the trip of Ellie, Ellie in the cover, all the trailers about Ellie, EVERYTHING about Ellie, and at the moment of truth, they force us to play with Joel's killer, and, the worst of everything, after some hellish hours that we all play obliged, they forced us to destroy Ellie, to try to kill her, playing with Abbie. It's the cruelest and most disgusting way I've ever seen to laugh in the face of the fans. I'm sorry ND, but you have broken the masterpiece you did 7 years ago.

Voice acting top notch, action is there, etc etc. Which unlike a lot of people, I cant make myself give this a 0-3 rating. Its just not that. However, that is where it ends. I absolutely hated the story. Abby is just not a good character no matter how you twist it. She sucks. I have zero interest in a part with involving her.

Многие видят её как The Last of Us 2, это категорически не правильно! The Last of Us: Part 2, подчеркиваю Часть 2.
Если бы не было The Last of Us в 2013 году, оценка была бы 9 или 10.

In hindsight all the warning signs were there but I decided to give the game a chance. I didn't hate the whole game though, so I'll talk about that before I get into the story.

My favorite thing about this game was the gameplay. It felt really smooth and responsive. It was also one of the most stress inducing games I have ever played. So I really liked playing it, although it started to get repetitive around the end. Also the graphics are beautiful and some of the best I have ever seen. Anyway on the the story.

Before I talk about what I disliked, I'll talk about what I did like. First off I really liked Jesse's character. It was also really nice to see Tommy again. I also like Ellie and Dina's relationship, it was done well, and I liked the open world Seattle portion and finding Nathan Drake's ring in the bank was cool. And lastly the flashbacks with Joel and Ellie were amazing, the guitar scene, museum scene, hotel scene, and Joel admitting that he lied were some of the best scenes in the game. Here's what I didn't like: Joel's death. I'm fine with Joel dying, maybe around the end of the game, but not only does he die in the opening, he gets his head bashed in with a golf club by Abby. Oh and lets get into Abby, I HATED her from the beginning to end. And not only does she kill Joel in the most disrespectful way, you play as her for 10 HOURS. That's HALF the game, and they try to make you like her, but who is going to like after she killed Joel! And I hated playing as her all those 10 hours! It sucks some of the best moments are in Abby's story like the new weapons she gets and the infected boss fight but it was ruined by playing as her. Oh and on top of that you play as ABBY fighting and beating up ELLIE! Enough said. And in the end Ellie lets Abby live, even though every person playing wanted to kill Abby then and there. Everything about Abby just sucked, and it was half the game.

On top of all this, the pacing was bad. We start by playing day 1,2,and 3 as Ellie, it ends with a cliff hanger, play day 1,2,and 3 as Abby, then the ending. It would be better if they took Abby's sections, shortened them and had up play Ellie day 1 then Abby day 1, Ellie day 2 then Abby day 2 and so forth. At least the pacing would be better

Let me just end by saying that I am not a blind hater. I am a huge Naughty Dog fan, I love Crash, Jak and Daxter, Uncharted, and Last of Us. And I was looking forward to this game up until the release day and it was a huge let down. They screwed it up by taking too many risks that did not pay off in the end. My rating would be a 6/10 just because I really enjoyed the gameplay and a few parts of the story, but that plot man...It's like the Last Jedi all over again. I gave it a chance despite of what I heard, and did not like it. I expect more from Naughty Dog.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spoiler ALERT don't read in case you want to experience the game yourself! The last of us 2 can be reviewed in 2 sentences. Game mechanics are great, it was a lot of thinking taken and the details including how the rope will go around various materials require standing applause. The story is very simplistic, with core only human feelings, without getting to details until the very end. Making it boring, lack of motivation for completing goals and fully concentrating on "villain" that become sympathize character till the scene with slitting a throat of a pregnant woman. The story was so poorly written than it's hard to understand reasoning behind the producer decision. Last scene with Joel shows that Ellie want to forgive him for lying and want to rebuild the bond between them. This scene should be on the beginning of the game, so we could cry when he is tortured and then killed by Abby. Instead, we saw him killed with a background noise of Ellie treating she will kill them all.

We don't know what's going on, and we only can wait to get to snap her neck. Instead, we got a 2 days holiday travel around the Seattle. Most of the game is about Abby only, and revelation the reasoning for torturing her saviour Joel and then killing him. For those who played the part 1 know he did kill or fireflies to save Ellie from operation. Including Abby's dad "the doctor" that want to kill Ellie for better good. This was already a bad (not enough) reason to kill not mention torturing, spitting and cursing Joel. The only reason the game did sell well was a made-up propaganda about SJW influence in the game. When realistically this part of the story was really well written without forcing or changing player way of thinking. Our Liv or Lily was great character that didn't want to be a wife of old prick. He wants to be a hero a warrior. Easy and great example of many people that going thought that process. But for the story it was a valid and great twist.
Unfortunately, this wasn't a big thing as we were forced to like Abby who constantly was admitting that WLF is right, even when they killed kids or torture people. We should like her because she lost her dad. Entire game couldn't explain why she has friends and why they support her so much. On the end she was happy to kill Ellie and her girlfriend, even she realizes how stupid that is. Only Liv stopped by looking at her as looking on the monster. Rest of the game is not worth a mention as is boring, unrealistic and repetitive. The baby ending will be much better than fight in the water against half size Abby. The last of us 2 should be named differently and shouldn't be a part of the game. 6/10 when comes to outstanding graphics and mechanics. The rest is boring, repetitive enemies are easy and blunt. Cut scenes are too long and contain just normal conversations. You could tell that the team spent most of its time-wasting on videos and motion capture instead gameplay. Big applause for programmers and designers, I would personally pay off the producer who stood behind story like this, and create hostile advertising to create a big talk about how much propaganda will be in this game. When on the end was nothing critical or wrong doing apart the wholes in the story and boring narrative.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't want to get too in depth so I'll list a few pros and cons then explain a little why I gave 6/10

    Pros
    - fantastic graphics - excellent music and sound design - better level design than 1
    - slightly better companion AI than 1 Cons - woeful enemy AI
    - Clunky outdated controls and animations - 6-10 hours too long - cheap storytelling, boring revenge plot, poorly fleshed out characters
    - feels like it could have been a PS3 game gameplay wise - tacky manipulation tactics made for you to feel empathy yet none of the characters warranted it. All in all I was hugely disappointed with the game, I finished it today and I'll be trading it in later on. The story is terrible, I honestly think one of the clickers could have come up with something better than this generic trope riddled monstrosity. I didn't care about Ellie OR Abby, just two bits of crap with different coloured glitter. The gameplay was mind numbingly dull, 10 minutes of gameplay followed by either an overly long cutscene, or an hour of going round and round a larger map finding crap to craft neccesary things with. Take away the wandering around all over picking up bits of scissors and the game itself would be around 7 hours I bet. The awful doom music everytime you got into a combat scenario got so annoying too, as did the silly noise whenever someone was close to spotting you (seriously it's relentless even when you're in cover) The combat mechanics were better than TLOU1 but not much, it felt very last gen, as did the gunplay which is Uncharted 1 levels of awful. It's not a bad game by any stretch, but neither is it the 10/10 masterpiece so many sycophantic pseudo-intellectual reviewers paint it as with their pompous waffles. It's a decent enough stealth game at times with a garbage story, awful writing, horrible characters and gameplay from the last gen. The only thing it really excels at is the graphics, sound design and voice acting. The rest of the game is simply mediocre truth be told. Would I recommend it? Only a deep sale, it's not worth more than £15, luckily I'll get most of my money back in trade - I feel for players that bought it digitally.

The Gameplay is spectacular. The music and the world you move through is truly wonderful. But I can't enjoy this story. I can't feel anything for any of the characters. Not even Ellie or Joel. Such a disappointment.. I was hoping this game would be at least what the first game lived up to be. But you can't have everything in this life. 2020 can F*** off. Sorry for my poor English.

The games first flaw is the inconsistencies of the characters we know, and their development being widely already explored and established. This game dismantles all of that, changing Joel into a clumsy gullible fool, as opposed to who he was in the first game. Joel's inability to trust people and their motives, are what kept him and his loved ones alive, he lived as well as he would die by the guidelines he set for himself in order to survive in a hostile world where anybody is susceptible to malevolence. This is seen practiced in Joel's and Ellie's journey across the country. In the 2nd game, Joel is transformed into somebody who is virtually unrecognizable by allowing his trust to put him and his brother in immediate danger, and this wasn't subtle in the least, not only did he agreed to follow Abby into her lodge where there were other people with motives unbeknownst to him but he didn't even question himself nor the assailants intentions, he acted through a persona that goes against everything he is. Furthermore, it just gets comical to the effect of even giving them his name and where they live.

Ellie's demeanor is dubbed down as a linear character with no nuance or growth, she has a single narrative, and that is *Kill Abby* nothing else matters, and you see this unfolds as she mows down dozens of men and women with no hesitation in order to get what she wants, this also goes against Ellie's principles that are apparent in the first game as well. The rest of the cast serve no relevance to what is going on around them, they could've easily still made the game without the excess of characters, and it wouldn't have affected the game's main story at all. Abby has to be the worst written character in all of gaming history, she shows no regrets, not once does she reflect on her actions, I've seen enough dateline and crime shows to see that Abby shows every characteristics of a sociopath, lacking any empathy for the people she's killed, there's no relatable trait that makes me care for her as a person because she doesn't have any, and forcing the player to play as her for the entirety of the 2nd half of the game is unforgivable. Number 2: The story.

The story in this game feels so redundant because it never gives the player the ability to sit and fathom what is going on, so the experience and the impact the game tries to express through its shock value, feels empty and drained of any context of what its trying to convey to the player, the message is drowned out by forced plot points that excruciatingly drags on just to arrive at no conclusion, the only saving grace the game's story had to cling on was the climax, and that was snuffed out by having Ellie save Abby's life (Her father's murderer and a sociopath) just to then let her walk away. The game lost it's inner core of what it was supposed to be about: THE **** ZOMBIES, in this game they were just there as props to serve a mundane and pointless narrative in revenge.

    Number 3: The politics.

If you go back far enough, you'll see these subtle hints being expressed by the actions and words Niel has used, for instance: Neil Druckmann was doing a conference where he was suggesting that multiple gaming developers were sexist and part of the "problem" by allegedly monopolizing women's sensuality for profit. That alone gives you the impression of what Niel Druckmann assumes about the gaming community and developers of being a bunch of sexist pigs who looks at women no more than sexual objects for our desires and profits. He hired a transgendered individual because of his/her sexual identity and not because of his/her experience and performance, that is in itself the ideal irony in all of this, because what he assumes about the gaming community, is true of what HE IS, looking at people only through the lens of dirty politics and not for who they are as individuals, what only matters is what group they belong to. Number 4:The Controversies.

Neil and naughty dog with sony, used a company called "Muso" to find and strike independent gaming journalist on youtube, for even muttering any hints at the game's leaks, multiple channels were susceptible in losing their careers over something so damn trivial, because Neil can't stand having dissonance being discussed about his overly pretentious game. I'll end with this: People loved The last of us because of how easy it was to relate to Joel and Ellie's story, the zombies were there for a purpose, everything and everyone in the game served a purpose and a meaning, and all of it was served masterfully as a complimentary to Joel's and Ellie's development as characters and their story. None of that is potrayed in the last of us 2.

Anyway, there are some minor quirks with it like you no longer are able to store ammo in your gun to make room in your pouch, maybe if Ellie didn't hoard all these notes she could maybe store more than 2 shotgun shells in her backpack.

Story was fine at first, made sense what happened, I'm not too frustrated about that, its sad but I knew it would happen when they announced it, I never wanted a sequel to this game because this is that kind of story but here we are. Neil however then decides to question my intelligence by seeing another perspective when I already understood it, just by reading WLF notes you can see these are not the evil bandits like you encountered in the first game, these are actual people with communities like Jackson, I can sympathise with them, but Neil doesn't think that's enough. He had a good emotional thing going but then scratches it all by throwing in unnecessary extra storyline of people that are no worse or better, if anything, seeing the long extra perspective of other characters, I just ended up disliking them more than I did in the beginning.

The game suffers greatly from the massive portion of it you don't play as Ellie, so don't buy it if you want it for just that, because at LEAST a third of the game, you're not Ellie, and after finally reaching the end of that portion you get into a boss battle you wanted no part of and didn't need to be there, you could've gotten to the exact same conclusion without making you do it. The game then has problems to know when to end and feels Neil just threw in several pitched endings at went with all of them. I'd rate it higher if you played more as the character that was advertised, Ellie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To those who are wondering if they should buy this game, I pose these questions. Do you care about Ellie and Joel? Do you want to find out what happens after TLOU1? It's honestly that simple of a question, ignore all the spoilers out there, and put politics aside. Do you want to see this story concluded? If the answer is yes, stop reading reviews on the internet and go play the game.

Before I begin, I would like to caveat that I played this game to its full completion, all the way until the title screen of the game changed to a new backdrop. Further proof that I've played the game to completion is the fact that I know that when you complete the game, you do not have enough points to unlock all the collectible models, and you must go back into New Game+ mode to finish the collection. This is not a review bomb, this is an honest opinion.

I have 4 major issues with The Last of Us Part II: Narrative Pacing, Character Development, Multiplayer, and finally yes, Politics. Each of these reasons is why I have taken four points away from a perfect 10/10 review score. Before you read or stop reading any further, I am not a politically charged person. I don't identify as left or right on our political spectrum, I probably align closest to center. Why does that need to be mentioned in a review of a video game? Because this is a politically charged game.

This game plays wonderfully. The stealth mechanics, the fast crafting, the animations and trigger-able mid-combat action sequences are second to none. The stealth is nuanced and deep, with the ability to prone through grass and create distractions for zombies and humans alike-- with each faction of enemy responding differently to signs of your presence. I could go on about what I love about the gameplay, but I am limited by 5,000 characters.

The game is so gripping in fact that when I finished the final chapters of TLOU2, I was left wanting more. I was still craving the combat loop that pulled me throughout the game, despite what I didn't like about the narrative choices. in TLOU2, there is no online multiplayer component, and no matter how you feel about the story and conclusion of TLOU2, you have no opportunity to relish in the positive aspects of the game in a multiplayer environment. And that is where I am truly saddened. because I cannot enjoy the game further in what I believe would be a crazy awesome multiplayer sandbox.

In TLOU2, they opted to tell a non-linear story, choosing to show you the most distressing and emotionally shocking scenes up front in the first hour of the game. The main reason this game is so polarizing is because they murdered a beloved character by the hands of a relatively unknown character, and then forced you to play her immediately afterwards. This narrative framing was foolish. TLOU2 made me hate Abby the moment she took stage, and made every single moment the game forced me to control her a grating and unenjoyable experience. I literally leapt off cliffs, the moment I was able to control Abby. When I got to the first fight with Abby and Ellie, I could hardly bring myself to fight Ellie, and I let Ellie kill me at every passing opportunity because I couldn't believe Naughty Dog was forcing me to kill Ellie. When the scene finally concluded and Abby "spared" Ellie, I was sick to my stomach. If the game was ordered differently, maybe making you play the Abby sections first, and then switch to Ellie at the latter half, maybe I would have been more motivated from Abby's POV. But the way this narrative was framed made me hate every moment I was playing as Abby.

I also drew issues with the interactions between Dina and Ellie. I didn't buy the emotional connection between the two, and honestly the lovey dovey scenes between them made me feel uncomfortable, as they seemed shallow and poorly developed. This has nothing to do with homophobia, as I was excited to see Ellie develop a love interest, and I really enjoyed the cute Ellie and Riley dynamic from Left Behind, a TLOU1 DLC adventure. And when Tommy was so angry with Ellie after settling down with a family, I felt that wholly unbelievable, and it ruined Tommy as a character. Finally with Owen, his character was likeable, but they made him a scumbag in the end, refusing to take care of his own knocked-up girlfriend Mel, and instead chasing after Abby in a self-destructive lust fueled fashion.

Which leads me into my final issue with the game, the identity politics, the intentional non-inclusion of likable male characters, and how in-your-face it all is. I don't have enough room to talk about the specifics of these points, which are arguably the most important. But if you do not like having self-righteous political statements thrown in your face, you will not like the main story beats of this game.

I wish TLOU2 had ordered their narrative differently and let up off the gas with the political undertones, because this would have been a more enjoyable game.

I want to start off by saying this game is neither a 10 or 0. It doesn't deserve a 10 with the glaring story flaws it has, nor does it deserve a 0 with the incredible graphics, sound, and enjoyable game play it has, although what's there is somewhat the same. Personally, I think of this game as a solid 6/10, and would consider it a 7/10 with a multiplayer component. Just the story,I want to start off by saying this game is neither a 10 or 0. TLOU 1 was a masterpiece, it was story like we never seen before, it was breathtaking. TLOU 2 is beautiful looking game and it has great gameplay. Well gameplay doesn't have much innovation, but it worked in TLOU1 so i am good, but i don't get what happened during development of this game. How could they give this story green light. The story itself is just a messy garbage. None of the characters are interesting NONE!!! When some character dies you feel nothing like they werent even there and they die a lot. I just don't get why would you follow first game story with a story about revenge it seems lazy. This whole theme revenge is bad it's stupid. half of the game is basically pointless it's just the same **** but from the enemy side. After finishing this game I just feel like i wasted 30 hours. iT was truly horrible experience and i hope everybody that reads this review will understand that this mess is not worth your time and money. Unfortunately, there isn't much beyond the eye-candy layer. The gameplay is slightly better than what the previous TLOU offered. Gunplay still feels janky and awkward, enemies are still largely identical, the AI is slightly better (enemies tend to react to you killing someone, but it doesn't force any kind of change in your approach to combat, nor a differing experience). Overall, it still plays like a mediocre stealth game, there are many games that do stealth with much more freedom of agency, tools and progression.
The story, while enacted with amazing detail, is really dissonant and sometimes, plain cheap.
Characters no longer have relatable motivations and on the rare occasion that they do, it's still not relatable due to plotholes and nonsensical decisions they make. Avoiding spoilers, I'll still say what they did with Joel is one of the cheapest ways I've ever seen writers trying to tear-jerk the player/viewer.
You can't simply rely on the established popularity of a character from a previous entry and just decide to do him like filth in the sequel for the sake of doing him like filth in the sequel, to make players feel "sad". Anyone could do that, there's nothing creative about it.
The overall "message" of the plot is one we've heard dozens of times before, yes, the cycle of revenge can be a never-ending downward spiral and the writing the game tries to convey this message is petty and suffers from plotholes and facepalm-provoking character choices.
Also, aside from the "key" characters from previous game, practically any other character could be replaced with almost anyone at random. They're acting well for most part and they have familiar expressions, but they have no relatable personality or personality traits.
The overall level design is pretty good and much more open, though the game let go of the environmental puzzles notable in the studios previous games almost entirely and exploration is rather pointless. Though, I will say that there's still more point to looting than it was in games like Red Dead Redemption 2.
Overall, it's not a "bad" game, but a rather forgettable and sometimes boring one, that's longer than it has any right to be.
If I pretend that the "shock value for the sake of shock value" moments weren't there, that is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ellie in TLOU1 was probably the most likeable character I'd ever seen in a game. To say she was charming feels like an understatement. The very next story about her that the devs want to tell me has me being trained and conditioned to dislike her for 15 hours. THEN they make me play as unlikeable Joel-Killer for another 15 hours. And at the end of it all they expect waterworks from me when she can't play the guitar bc of her stupid failed revenge mission. And all that on top of a messy story with a lot of cringey moments and barely any Joel. And every time Joel was there it only served to bum me out. When the first game ended I remember it being a "wow what a cool experience" moment. Didn't get that at all from this one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So much here is good. this is the best looking game on the PS4, probably ever. The use of difficulty settings, etc was done amazing, and the gaming industry needs to apply this to future games. It allows total customization on how you want to experience difficulty, rewards etc, and it's very well done.

The game makes a huge mistake when you have to play as "Abby", after killing the character you probably love the most as a fan of the series. At times I felt manipulated as a player having to perform forced actions that Abby makes, The "Scripted" action of killing the dog as Ellie, felt very forced, and then introduced a weak story around it. The story felt cheap, poorly written and forced. I was not invested in Abby's character whatsoever, although I will admit she has the best combat scenes in the game.

The ending was poorly written, and very gut wrenching, and did not make any sense at the end. Narratively speaking it was very bad.

I give it a 6/10 because graphically its beautiful, plays okay, but gets repetitive.

Having played through the game, there's no question that the game is a technical masterpiece. The beautiful sprawling landscapes just remind me of the awful labor practices that must have been utilized to build such a detailed and ultimately useless world. Sure, the stadium that took 400 man hours to build is beautiful, for the 2 seconds you walk through it.

    The gameplay is dated.

Sure, the stadium that took 400 man hours to build is beautiful, for the 2 seconds you walk through it.

The gameplay is dated. This is a mediocre stealth game at best that would have been innovative 10 years ago and is now cliche at best. The animations are stunning but more often than not you're stuck in some luxurious animation while a clicker kills you from behind. It's boring.

Not to get too long, but the story is not misplaced for this audience. A harrowing tale about revenge and all the miseries that go along with it might have worked great in a smaller title or with a different genre of gameplay. On one hand you're supposed to be learning about the horrible consequences of your actions, but then you're supposed to be having fun murdering people? It's bad juxtaposition.

Lastly, the writing is sub par. While for a video game the topics are mature and well handled, the writing is unbelievable. The dialogue is forced and the relationships between the characters are worse than on the Big Bang Theory.

All in all, this is not a fun game and it's not a worthy piece of art. It's a sub par, boring game that is trying desperately to be relevant when all it should be trying to be is fun.

Coming from a fan of the first game... I loved the original. I'm gay, so there's not "Omg a lesbian!??!" ... I don't know anyone actually annoyed with that. Ellie has always been a lesbian, and it was presented in a non dead-horse beating sort of way in the original game. People's issue with the LGBT stuff in the game, is mostly to do with how people outside of the game are parading it around and dismissing criticism by just calling everyone bigots lol. As a gay dude, I get annoyed when gay characters get shoved in people's faces, and used as marketing and virtue signaling. It's lame. That aside... this new story really takes a big dump on the fans. I'm expected to play as a character that kills one of the beloved original characters? No thanks. Whoever thought that was a good idea, needs to lose their job. Gross. There's not even closure for that crap. It all just annoys me to no end.

Anyone giving this game a 0, through 3... isn't honest. Anyone giving it a 8-10... is either not honest, or isn't a fan of the original game. That's my take on those scores anyway.

The game looks great, with lots of big locations. That is a big plus. But for me it pretty much ends there.

    There is a lot I didn't like:
    - The vibe of part 2 is totally different from part 1, and not in a positive way;
    - The story goes on for way, waaaaaaaaay too long. Really. They should have at least cut 1/3 of it. And this is very much possible, as there are quite a lot of things you can cut without affecting the main storyline in any real way (you may lose a bit of 'nuance', but nothing that can't be missed);
    - The gameplay is far too repetitive (see also my previous point!). Especially when the story goes for the 'double down' halfway through (if you've played, you know what I mean);
    - The difficulty setting is totally off. I finished Part 1 on its default difficulty, and it was challenging, but fine and doable. I started Part 2 on "moderate", then went down to "easy" because of a number of very frustrating encounters & to speed up the game. And the last half I played on the lowest difficulty, and still there were encounters that were just too hard for that setting. And I am not an hardcore gamer, but at the very least an average gamer;
    - This game has the same problem that the "Uncharted" games have for me (also from ND): if there are fighting parts in the game, make the fighting mechanics good. The mechanics in Part 2 feel clunky and frustrating. I understand that the main character is not a trained soldier, but this really did not play pleasantly at all;
    - The story has the subtelty of a sledehammer. The writers really hammer their story points home, and are very in your face about what you should feel about what happens;
    - The ending was just complete and utter **** It dragged on for far too long, and it totally did not feel like fitting for a "The Last of Us" game. At least not if you know Part 1;

Combat and move aspect is similar to the first game with few changes like jump mechanic and different arsenal, which is to say that it's not anything too special. Graphics are one of bigger improvements when it comes to the previous game, however I and some others have noticed visual bugs like weapons overlaying with one another or some objects like crates or cargo visuals not loading in cause you are too far away...but you are using a sniper any you can't even see those visuals with that if they are far away, resulting in you thinking you missed a shot but you actually hit an "invisible cargo" or something similar to it.
Sountracks and sound effects are very well made and fit the atmosphere. That is one improvement compared to the first game that I can give with an ease.
Enemies are also well designed. Humans call each other by name and are somewhat smart when it comes to scouting and trying to eliminate you. I also like the fact that there are many ways of taking an enemy out and visuals of that are very well made.
Story wise is definitely not this games best side from my perspective. Characters in game felt like they were making irrational decisions or were doing an opposite of what they did before for no well given reason. Their designs are well made and you do end up caring for them (as long as they didn't do something to make you not care for them, which does happen for some). Which is a shame since for most of them when they are done with their part in the story, it doesn't leave you with any satisfaction. Like they were just there for the sake of being there, not contributing to the main story whatsoever.
So short to say: Gameplay was ok, sound was awesome, graphics were improved, foes were alright, story was poor and so were the characters.

If you base your opinion on the first half of the game, it's probably 10/10.
The gameplay is insane. The acting is insane. The graphics are insane.
Even while some people hate the fact that Joel is kiled the way he is, I think it makes sense at the end of the day. I hate it too, and I wish we could've had way more time with him.
But considering we get heartbreaking flashbacks later in the game, it makes up for it.

But when we reach a climax of the story halfway into the game, only to have it become a cliff-hanger for 10+ hours, as we play Joel's killer.. Boy does the game dip in quality.
The fact that I'm supposed to care about this character is insulting.
Spoiler alert, I didn't **** care. I was frustrated and bored.
The gameplay tanked as a result as well. I didn't feel invested in what I was doing anymore, so why bother trying to survive? I didn't like this story, so why not just rush through it?

In the last act of the game, as we go back to Ellie, the story does get pulled back to what's important and I found myself enjoying the game again. And while people hate the ending, I kind of liked it, because it did feel like closure.
And while I hated playing as Abby and still hold on to that, it may have contributed to the fact I was okay with letting her go. Since Ellie did win the fight, and could've killed her right then and there.

First part of the game: 10/10
Second part of the game 4/10
Third part of the game 8/10
    Overall: 7.5

    Gameplay: 9/10
    Graphics:10/10
    Acting:10/10

But the story really suffered from Abby's segments, and it was an idiotic thing to force players to play.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
