Expand

It's technically gorgeous but I think the original benefited with Naughty Dog working as a team. In this game it just feels like Neil's pompous ego driving the game making decisions. I regret my $180 collector's edition purchase. But the game itself is worth playing as long as you're not bothered that it makes the original masterpiece a little less special. It all winds down to a fairly satisfying conclusion, but the payoff doesn't justify the brutal grind through tragedy you have to traverse to get there. The entire second half of this game should have been stripped down to a 3-4 hour experience. In the end, the excessively bloated second half would prevent me from even recommending the game to fans of the first game. Expand

Music is really some random chords, no match to first game.
Terrible script, and not because of the first part. Just full of holes, and second part of the game is a more a comedy then drama, its really that bad. Not 0-110 obviously, but far from the 10 too.

Combat is very well polished and enemy AI is some of the best I've seen for stealth-type games. The last good thing I will say is that the acting is well done with the material they had to work with.

That's where all my good things end. I think Naughty Dog was successful in that I felt hate, and I felt what Ellie was feeling: to be emotionally exhausted. The problem? The whole experience was not worth it in the end. They risked a lot in this game, and in my optinion it did not pay off. i enjoyed Ellie at first, but they wrote her into a tragic trope. Always getting beat down, always making the wrong decisions, and generally just kind of acting dumb. Her story arc was narrow and felt lacking in the end. Despite all other achievements, story mattered most and it was not good or satisfying.

Our other new character Abby, is also not very interesting. She shows no remorse for her actions early in the story and generally seems to not care all that much about her friends. They try to make you like her, but it's all surface level. There's no real depth to her and I didn't feel like she was relatable. Near the end of the game, they have essentially morphed Abby into Joel 2.0 and it didn't feel earned.

I wanted to love this game, and I struggled for literally weeks after beating to try and find some redeeming quality to make myself like it. I couldn't. In the end i just questioned the point, and wish with all my heart that it would have been different.

The previously shallow combat system has a number of additions that make both fighting and stealth gameplay more satisfying and fun while traversing and exploring the world is more dynamic thanks to the introduction of physics-based puzzles and the ability to crouch and go prone. There is also the matter of accessibility options to consider, which allow players to customize their experience outside of a simple difficulty slider. Visual, auditory, and control customization makes the game easier for anyone to play. I had a blast playing the game and planning strategies for dealing with certain enemies.
That being said, this game is majorly hindered by its own story. It's a clunky, overly ambitious setup with shallow side characters and unsatisfying storylines that really make it a chore to play through, especially considering how many more cutscenes you have to sit through compared to the first game. Without spoiling any of the individual plot points, this game's story is a 180-degree turn from its predecessor, trading in an organic, beautifully developed relationship for a hodgepodge of flashbacks and inconsequential side missions that attempt to feed the players context in piecemeal doses while developing virtually none of its characters and giving the player very little reason to care for anyone, its protagonist included. Considering Neil Druckmann also wrote the beloved predecessor to this game, the sloppy pacing and static characters are astonishing if not outright offensive. While I expected to have some complicated feelings after its conclusion, I found myself mostly annoyed and frustrated at its lack of compelling motiviation or satisfying conclusions.
In short, I did have a fun time with this game in the thirty-some hours it took me to complete it. But around the halfway point, the story took a turn for the worse and I found myself annoyed at having to play through more of it just to finish the story. It left a bad taste in my mouth and for that reason, I have to rate it in the midrange because as technically impressive as it is, it's hard to enjoy a story-driven game with such messy writing.

Just finished the game last night. Took me 25hrs...
Wow, what a terrible ending. It honestly felt like it went on forever and just wouldn't end?

    Good parts
    1. Graphics are amazing and best on any console.
    2. Voice acting/Cute scenes best in the business
    3. Combat is so much fun
    4. Lots of cool moments that was so intense and brutal.
    5. Executions are super satisfying.
    6. Gunplay is enjoyable for the most part.
    7. New character Jesse was awesome! And he just gets ****ed up way too easily.
    8. Flashback scenes with Joel were amazing. Just made me want him back even more.
    Bad/Ok
    1. Grinding all game long for upgrades was such a hassle, probably why It took me 25hrs to complete.
    2. The story was all over the place.
Why did they kill of Joel so early in the game? And make me want to hate Abby straight away. Then try so hard to make us like her? She was alright but the way it happened was just terrible.
    3. Her crew were scumbags and cheaters and not likeable.
    4. Ellie and Dina were ok, but their story was average?
So much plot holes it was just bad writing.
    5. Joel and his brother being absolute dumbarses with complete strangers? Was so annoying and could have been executed way better.
    6. New enemy types, Barely any really?
    7. Barely any Innovations for a sequel
    8. Game length
First time in a long time. I wanted the game to end, and I still had 5 hrs before I was finished with the game?
    9. Some boring dialogue and dragged out scenes and action set scenes.
    10. The ending was terrible and was such a waste of time and made you go through it twice? Really dragged and dragged.
Abby was ok and I was hellbent to make her pay.
But by the end, they just made me not really care for anybody at the end. Felt like they forced me to like her. By making her OP and give her all the best parts in the game and weapons and gadgets.
So sad when this was supposed to be an amazing franchise that could keep pumping out amazing games. But they stuffed it up. I do not want a new one or care now.
Game of Thrones last season all over again.

To me it’s a shame that all this talent was wasted with a story I don’t think it had to be told. I have to give them credit for taking risks, and cranking the intensity up to 11, but the gamble doesn’t pay off. It uses the original story as a springboard, strangely not understanding what made it special, and why its bittersweet open ending worked so well. It’s a bleak story, poorly paced, reeking of self importance and not meant to be enjoyable.

As I said, there’s a lot of talent in this game, and it has its moments. I think the 10/10 reviews are as bad as the 0/10 reviews, both are toxic overreactions. In the end, it only matters if you liked it or not. I personally, did not.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved everything about the original Last Of Us. So it makes me really sad to say that Part II was a big disappointment.

The story is a waste of potential and a pretentious yet incompetent mess. Ellie and Joel are great characters and their relationship was the soul of the series. There were a lot of interesting places that relationship could have gone. Instead, it is all discarded in return for a revenge plot, when Joel is killed at the start of the game. The trade is not at all worth it, as the resulting story is both uninteresting and ludicrous.

I'd like to make a brief aside here to mention that the developer released a trailer in which Joel effectively tells Ellie that he will be accompanying her through the game. This turned out to be a fake scene; in the actual game, there's another character in Joel's place. This was essentially an attempt to deceive the customer, and I don't think it's acceptable.

A significant amount of time is also spent playing as Joel's killer, Abbie, in a ham-fisted attempt to tell a story about empathy. While such a story may have worked in a medium such as film, in the medium of video games, in which the player is an active participant, it is totally broken; the player is eventually forced to try to kill Ellie, which obviously they don't actually want to do, and then a few hours later we're forced to try to kill Abbie, as if we've also suddenly forgotten the chunk of the game getting to know her. It actively disengages the player. Aside from these major structural flaws, the new characters are generally pretty dull, and the incidental story -- a city's draconian government is overthrown by the populace, who descend into tribal warfare -- is just a stale rehash of the first game.

I really enjoyed the gameplay of the original. This sequel is very similar, with a handful of new additions -- in particular, more involved melee, a few new weapons and a few new enemies. The combat is still solid and there are some great set pieces. But this is a long game, and there is just not enough innovation or variation here; I was surprised to find myself becoming bored long before the game ended. The scavenging in particular starts to feel like a real chore, and actually an encumbrance upon the act of getting from A to B, which is the majority of the gameplay. Environmental puzzles would have really helped, and the ones that are in the game are satisfying, but they are few and far between.

On a technical level the visuals are excellent. However, the vast bulk of the game is spent in the city of Seattle. This means there just isn't the scope to keep the game visually creative. It's also too similar in locations to the original game. Schools, hospitals, hotels, city streets and the suburbs... we've seen most of it before. The animation it must be said is best in class, although not quite the technical marvel shown in the 2018 trailer. And a special mention has to be made of the nice detail of enemies calling each other by name, which really adds a layer of believability.

Finally, the musical score, which was so strong in the first game, is also a surprising let down; in fact it is barely present.

Overall, I had a really mixed experience played this game. On the whole I can't really say that I enjoyed it. The developers might argue that that's not the point. I disagree. I'm not talking of enjoyment in the simplistic sense of having "fun". A tragedy, well-crafted, is still "enjoyable" in the deeper sense of the word. I don't think this game was well-crafted. I think it made a number of serious errors which led to it falling far short of its potential, and probably killing off my interest in the future of this series.

TLOU 2 is an expensive game made by talented people who were all laboring towards a bad idea. As a result, TLOU 2 is just a bad game. PARTS of it are outstanding. But the parts can never escape the whole. Ultimately TLOU2 feels pointless. It's characters are the weakest element. They all seem created to feel like "real people", but are slavishly tied to a thread of "fate" that feels often inexplicable. The romance between Ellie and her love interest feels most egregious because the characters relationship advances like a rocket against the least romantic backdrop imaginable. When Ellie casually calls her partner "babe" and casually works in an affirmation of "love", I was like... "what?!?". It's the script trying to go someplace that's completely unearned despite trying SO VERY HARD. And that's the main criticism with the writing of TLOU2. It's trying EXTREMELY hard to do... SOMEthing. But just what is inexplicable.

TLOU2 is a perfect example of why narrative games shouldn't be so expensive (to produce). It hurts to have to call them out for not living up to the expense.

We have certainly seen this combat system before, and it is as adequate as it ever was. Where it utterly fails is in the narrative and the character development. Trying to make Abby at all sympathetic is like putting lipstick on a pig, and making the player play as her for so much of the game following her brutal murder of Joel is insulting. Ultimately it is a preachy sermon on multiple hot button topics that I could have done without. I certainly don't need a game designer to lecture me about social tolerance and the futility of revenge in a game that requires one's characters to kill many scores of people. While I won't spoil it, the ending is without doubt one of the most insulting and intellectually dishonest things I have seen written into a video game. So the upshot is this. I only played my second play through recently so that I could have the storyline fresh in my mind before playing part II. The story on the other hand was very well done. I would give the original an 8 overall for a score. Part II pretty much follows the exact same gameplay and I again I found it dull and repetitive. It gets really boring when 40% of your gameplay is scrounging for supplies. I also think they should have had more development with the monsters. Whenever they stuck with that it was scary, tense, and fun. I think the most fun I had with the gameplay was fighting that big monster. It was different and it caught me by surprise. Fighting mostly humans got boring quickly.

    Graphics/Sound

Graphically the game looks amazing. There is a cutscene where it shows Abby waking up and it looked so real I thought it was a video. I also like realistic violent animations they added. A lot of people complained about that but I loved it. I also loved the little touches of humanity they sprinkled in such as people yelling their comrade's name when they died or when Ellie sneaks a stealth kill and she whispers things like "Got you f**ker!" I chuckled every time after a kill when Ellie would say something like, "Dick!" . LOL It was so Ellie, I loved it. The sound of people gurgling and choking on their own blood as you sliced their throats, it was so creepy and awesome. Job well done on that front. The music was great and the guitar playing was also a nice touch.

    Acting

Top-notch as expected. All of the actors involved are triple A VO and they even had Jeffery Wright who is a triple A Hollywood actor in a bit part. I thought that was cool.

    Story

This is where the game falters, I think. The overall story and morale were good it was just executed quite poorly. A lot of the mistakes made by the characters were just so strange it made it hard for people to believe it. Even though I loved playing as Abby it just didn't feel right switching over to her character when you reached the crescendo with Ellie. I heard someone else say it might have been better if they alternated chapters and I agree. I think that would have worked. I also think they were quite heavy-handed with the debbie downers (depressing aspects). It's like the game's main mission was to make you feel as miserable as possible. I like a sad story but this was just a bit over the top.

    Conclusion

Mediocre gameplay with little improvement from 8 years ago (which wasn't that great to begin with) coupled with a flawed narrative, plants this game firmly in Meh-sville.

The story is the key here and its not good, in best case mediocre, long and just shocking for the sake of it.

Graphics are cool and gameplay is okay (nothing major new), sound is amazing.
But story makes it all glue together. Sadly for me it was not believable and meh....

Give this game a 6. Story is ass, everything else is alright. Graphics are superb! Neil really thinks he's some philosophical or godlike director. Kojima worked his ass off to get where he is at now. You will never be a Kojima or a Cory Barlog. Also has the Most pointless death to a main character in history of video games.

    BUT

The story is very basic in writing and scope. Though it took me around 21 hours to complete if the padding was removed it would likely be less than 1/2 that. On top of that the player has zero influence over the story and has no choices in the game what-so-ever that affect anything. Your playthrough will be exactly the same as everyone else outside of combat.

The characters also act contrary to how they are set up during pivotal moments. I won't go into details as not to add spoilers but the choices the characters make are completely against what they would do based upon their other actions and motivations. If I was rating only on characters and story It would be a sub 5 score.

As a whole package I settled on a 6 as what I feel is fair. It saddens me as I loved the first and this could have been an 8+ with some changes to the narrative and characters but will now just be a below average game I will forget completely in the future.

The trailers were very misleading as to what the experience would be. You could have made it clear who you would be playing as without giving the story away. It would have been an avoid, had this been known.

The structure of the story is very jarring, there are large sections that are just filler. The main couple in the game have disappointing chemistry, compared to Ellie’s interactions with other named characters, her gf is very wooden. SJW theme is pushed a little hard at the beginning but this becomes a non issue after an hour, it is a shame they felt the need themselves to make a big deal of Ellie being gay rather than just treating it as a matter of fact straight away.

Playing as the other 2nd main character is just trash. This is a game, it’s meant to be fun. No one wanted this. The first big death in the game, was okay with me but I understand due to the advertising and people’s deep investment why they were angry.

My main issue is with the writing. It’s very obvious that there was a message they were trying to convey. But the themes they present are not exactly ground breaking, humans capable of evil, we are all the villain in someone else’s story, revenge bad. This is a game for adults, this is not groundbreaking stuff. If you are going to prop a whole game up on these themes. Deliver it well, concisely and nail The characters and arcs.

Weirdly the arc on the hellish 2nd character is a hell of a lot better than Ellie, but the character is just essentially a ****. Combined with the wrongs done earlier, I’d be surprised if 1/10 people managed to connect with this character. It was awful and demotivating.

Ellie’s arc is just a total mess. Key decision at the end made zero sense and really made no sense at that specific moment. No one would have had that revelation at that point.

I could go on, but ultimately the story feels like a story not worth telling. The characters are inconsistent, there are parts where it’s just like, this is not how human beings work. All of this could have been forgiven, but they clearly made the narrative the main crux and message of the game and that falls very, very flat.

You can have a layered, you can have bleak, you can have a message. But don’t **** it up and sit there like a child and tell people it’s what you take out of it, like this is some kind of high art and not a story that would have gotten you laughed out of any book or film publisher In the world.

So many parts of it seemed forced, focusing on telling a revenge story rather than the characters personality. They make decisions out of character. Some writers ask how will their characters react to situations and go from there, others have a situation / goal and make the characters fit it even if it goes against the characters personality. This is the later. Having said this, other parts were great. Wish a different game or a different story had been told using the same assets & characters. Expand

I picked the game little late and was aware of all the hate towards the game. People defending the game said it was hate bcoz of Feminism, Death of a major character, Political message (have no idea what it meant), or Lesbian etc....No I didn't hate the game bcoz of any of these. Lets go further starting with positives.

    Pros:
Like every Naughty Dog games, Graphics in this game is beautiful
    Some brilliant design Levels
Good Game play with some realistic shooting mechanics
Enemy AI was great (Many Stealth games we see enemies search for you sometime and then go back; Not the case here, enemies are aggressive from the moment you are spotted)

    Cons:

    STORY. STORY. STORY **Spoilers follow****

What starts as revenge story, goes into something else. And they ask you to play as Abby (Antagonist) for half the game which made me irritated. To me her father decided to kill a small girl without anyone's consent (he was wrong). Joel protected the kid and killed him for raising the knife at him. Joel was a hero and Abby torturing to death without knowing the real incident that led to her Father's death, makes her a villain in my eyes. So the makers decided to show the game from Abby's side, trying to project revenge is not good was all some bull**** piece of writing. In fact they were contradicting their stance on the first game. Game drags like anything in the last portion, there were 2-3 moments I thought the game was over but it kept on going. Ending was absolutely bad, making me wonder what was the overall point of the game. I wish they never made the 2nd half of the game or taken a different storyline or best of all "I wish this sequel was never made"

This game has amazing atmosphere. The environments and sound design are truly phenomal. Also the voice acting and animations are really good. There are more parts to a game though. Lets start with gameplay. Overall the gameplay is fine, but after a long time with not a lot of change in it it gets too repetitive. A lot of encounters start feeling the same. Then the characters. While the characters are really well voice acted and have great animations, they are a very flat/empty. We aren't given a reason to care about them, which also makes anything that happens to them less impactful. The story part of the game is the biggest mess. The story is mediocre, very much unlike the first game, and has serious pacing issues. Sometimes it skips parts that could have been interesting, but often it is too slow and is dripfeeding you small bits of story. But the biggest problem is delivery. The order in which the story is told and the way it is done is incredibly jarring and is a real detriment to the experience. Also the bold decision they made to have you play approx. half the game as Abby (while also advertising the game with only Joel and Ellie) has not worked out at all. At the start I actively did not want to play as her as the game has only painted her as a bad person and has not given the player any reason to like her. All things considered I still enjoyed the game, but not as much as I should've with a Naughty Dog game and it especially did not live up to the emotional level The Last of Us 1 had.

In the technical aspect, the game is overwhelming: incredible graphics, excellent environmental design, God-tier animation, shot composition and overall scene direction, however the game is dragged out and over stays it's welcome, and the overall gameplay loop is mediocre at best, barely an upgrade from a game 7 years ago, hence feeling like the game belongs in the previous generation when it comes to being played instead of being watched. Beyond the technical aspects, the game's story pretty much deconstructs it's former narrative peak in character writing, and by the end of the game the story lead nowhere and pretty much undid every achievement part 1 managed to reach. This is the most disappointing aspect of part 2, and left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Incredible technicals, mediocre gameplay and bad writing. How this game managed to get such a very high score in the "Profesional reviews" when it clearly has so many issues is beyond me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let’s start with the positives. This game is a technical marvel. Amazing graphics and environments that aren’t likely to be topped until a couple years into the next console generation. The accessibility options are also really incredible. Hopefully other developers can take notice and implement similar options in their games to making gaming more accessible for people that weren’t able to enjoy it before.

Gameplay, I’m a bit lukewarm on. It really hasn’t changed much from the first game. To me it was serviceable in the first game, because it was a vehicle to get you through a really awesome story. This probably won’t win you over if you really hated the first game from a gameplays perspective.

Now onto the story. Full disclosure, I heard about the leaks in advance, but was optimistic that context could make them more understandable. Some of the biggest plot points in fictional history would have seemed totally crazy if you heard about them without context. Unfortunately, at least in my opinion, context did not make things better.

ND seemed to be set from the start on Joel dying and the game ending a certain way, but apparently couldn’t be bothered with putting much thought into how to get there. Somehow Joel’s 30 years of survival instincts eroded away in 4 short years, and put him in a situation he could have never possibly ended up in.

Now the ending, throughout the game they really emphasize how far Ellie is willing to go for revenge with heinous act after heinous act, to finally back down at the finish line, a final action that can’t even compare to killing dogs and pregnant women. It’s just really really poor writing, and really doesn’t seem like it could have possibly come from the same creative minds that brought us the original.

In the end I think a 6/10 is pretty reasonable, because the game does achieve some pretty spectacular things, but stumbled hard at the one thing fans really wanted ND to deliver on.

Sadly I do not feel writing, pacing and the way story was told was very well done and simply turned game unlikable fot me, For a story heavy game like this with some heavy subjects I also found this something that made it impossible for me to rate game all that highly. The Video game is a technical achievement and beautiful to look at. But if you're invested in the story, its really underwhelming and dissatisfying. However there are great moments in it to marvel and potentially great ideas that do not seem to land/work. Its aesthetically groundbreaking but the plot and character development really makes it hollow and pointless.

But on the other the story has character development, pacing and story problems that take you out of the game leaving you empty. TLoU Introduced a new kind of Zombie game with interesting enemies. NOT JUST fighting Zombie but the other humans struggling to survive. The first game to a broken man that cared about nothing in the whole world, introduces him to a young girl that sheltered optimistic and hopeful, even being born into this desolate situation. Through a story of challenges struggle, survival, these two characters grow and change to become like father and daughter. Till ultimately Joel will give up the world for Ellie. The last of us 2 improves so much Graphics are perfection and I had 0 glitches or problems. Game play was a return of survival and fighting with both Ellie & Abby feeling different. The addition to jump, dodge and go prone were all quality changes. The problem is the story and not that it isn't explained it is but it is poorly done. The game us rushed and feels to long at the same time. Jumping back and forth from Abby to Ellie and flashbacks is all to much. Ellie does not grow in any way and accomplishes nothing. Abby changes so suddenly that it is impossible to care. The game just drags and then comes to a compete stop when Dinna and Ellie are back around Jackson in a almost dreamlike Existence with their child JJ. Which she leaves for teally no reason. Then suprise fireflies are still out there somewhere, Ravages or something another group no explanation or development. In conclusion there is little to care about by the end. Most of the characters are dead, what is left are traumatized, beaten and broken, and even left hating each other. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I managed to avoid the spoilers, and I intentionally avoided all the trailers, except 'e3 reveal' one. I enjoyed 'Part 2' as a game, but as a sequel to 'the last of us' I did not.

First strike was when Tommy, in the middle of the fight, from nowhere decided to be a gentleman and introduced himself and his brother – a person with a secret so horrible, that Tommy swore to took this secret to his grave. And, quite possibly, person with a price on his head, after all he had done. And after that decided to go in a room with bunch of unknown, heavily armed people with no precautions. That for me felt very out of character.

Second strike was for the way Abby killed the man, who just saved her life. I have no problem with the fact that she kills him. Just the way it happens for me paints her as complete psycho and irredeemable person.

And third strike for me where all those cheap, in-your-face attempts to show Abby and her friends as good, intelligent, compassionate people. Here's Abby saves a zebra, here's Abby reads a book, here's Abby feels ashamed that her friend cuts the queue, here's Abby plays with a dog, here's Abby saves kids even tho they are an enemies and so on.. Abby's part was tooooo long. I was done with it before 'day 1' ended. And from that point I just stopped caring about what is happening with Abby storywise. It just felt like completely different game, that I was forced to play for some reason.

The last part and the end were quite emotional, and I understand what ND tried to do, but it just did not work for me because of all the reasons above.

And it's just sad and upsetting. Because flashbacks with Joel was great, especially the museum one and final one. Because I see all this incomprehensible amount of work that was put in this game! Visually it looks stunning. Hands down the best looking game at this moment. Acting and mocap are top notch. Game play is solid. Sound and music is great. Years of work. You have all components needed to make another masterpiece. And in result all I feel is confusion and disappointment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great graphics. The only good thing I can say about this game.

Very repetitive gameplay: Too few enemies, too much looting, some parts are boring and very slow paced.

Poorly structured campaign: When you're getting to the best part with Ellie, you have to play as Abby for 10 hours. It absolutely breaks the climax.

Bad character development: People in this game just feel not real and they have no depth. All the new characters are just forgettable.

Story is simply terrible: Lots of plot holes, weird character behavior, specially at the end. Just not what fans expected of this sequel.

I will never understand the cheap death of Joel, why Abby wants to be Yara and Lev's best friend, why Ellie spares Abby in the end, etcetera.

It's a pity that this game could've been so much more. They tried to make a surprising story, and it is. For the worse.

6/10 for the graphics and some good parts (mainly hospital zone and Rat King).

Motion Capture -

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics:
They are the most breath taking graphics to come out of the current Gen Consoles, period. From close up details to explanding the wilderness, every level is handcrafted to look like a masterpiece that shouldnt be possible on the console. The fact that they learned how to get rid of loading for the most part is a testament to their hard work & knowledge of the system. Nothing looks like a a repeating texture. All buildings & wilderness looks unique. The scale of each building, & environment is a site to behold & helps provide the illusion of really being there in the world. Every shot is cinematically done. The lighting is mouthwatering. The models are incredibly detailed. The animations are realistic & gritty & often make one feel they're watching a movie. The particle effects for water during a rain storm, thunder storm, a river, lake with air bubbles as you jump into it, ocean as you try not to drown is amazing!
    Sound:
Every weapon action & firing, rain as it hits each object whether your inside a building or not, underwater, step on a piece of glass, people holding a conversation, all was done at AAA movie quality. Music hits when needed. It's basically an audiophiles wet dream. The fact that you can crack a safe by sound alone if you don't know the combination is an fantastic touch I didn't know I wanted. Just going through the game & turning something like a person whistling into one of the most terrifying sounds to hear, into you terrifying the whistlers into speaking is fantastic.
    Gameplay:(spoilers)
It's a technical leap from the first game. More fluid movement, added ability to jump, new melee weapons & guns with the ability to upgrade them is fun. You can also upgrade yourself to help provide an edge to specialize in the play style you enjoy. Everything for the most part is great - the AI partner's intelligence. They stupidly decide to get right behind you when they've been 20 paces from you the entire fight! Switching between time/characters can negatively effect the games fun factor. If you poorly decide to cut from the MC to bad guy to show their motivations when they might kill the MC, you don't care about what their motives are. It was hours into the bad guy's gameplay before I enjoyed anything. I questioned why I was still playing. Half the game was ruined because I couldn't move on not knowing if 2 characters were killed or not? I kept letting Abby die hoping to get back to Ellie. Anytime I took a picture of something impressive in the game despite being annoyed, I Hid Abby out of all pictures. The Bridge scene to go to a hospital & how high up they were to reach another building, was the first time I thought “Wow. Wouldn't be me.” Then I thought about making her jump to commit suicide. What makes this worst, is I don't just play through a game, but look around at every detail I can & sometimes see if the world breaks. This adds hours to my game. I might spend an hr staring at an alley & admiring the work that went into it. So for me, the game felt way too long, seeing how I was playing a character I hated.
    Story: (Spoilers)
I understood why Abby's actions were done, but it doesn't mean I accepted it. The fact that Joel went out without having an epic fight & just took it VS Tommy's fight where he went into the ocean like a Boss? That is what I expected for Joel! It could have been more acceptable & believable. It rang hallow. Joel didn't get a great final chapter, but went out choking on a pretzel on the john. He went out like a chump. Every part with Abby until I knew Ellie & Tommy were alive was an annoyance. I didn't know if the kid was male or female. The said he, but later he was to be some old person's wife? The “boy” was played by an actress, so it was all kinds of confusing.
The bouncing back & forth/time/place/who, I found more annoying than a little bit. Then the dream sequences were pointless. Again, anything as Abby I felt was a waste of time until Ellie & Tommy's fate were clear. Abby was a filler section I didn't want/ask for. If Neil had shown that they survived the encounter, then switched over to Abby & gave us her backstory. It would have made it possible to enjoy the sections containing her. By the end of the game, I just felt frustration. All sides didn't know what they were fighting for. All were hypocrites. The world was burning with anger.
It's a mixed bag. Not gameplay wise. That was dang near perfect. The story angered me. Parts needed better execution. Ellie's immunity didn't count for anything.Thinking about what i played, It's an emotional rollercoaster filled with people making bad decisions and living with them. Dina and Jesse were forgettable & didnt make sense. Abby wasn't likeable. The whole game was how Ellie is bad, Abby good, but Abby wasnt. No talk about regrets killing Joel after he saved her life. I paid for the game. I'd recommend getting it on sale if yr on the fence.

This is because the creators at Naughty Dog have discredited the legacy of the first game with a misguided plot twist. Ultimately, the emotional investment and connection with the first game is lost very early on. The saddest aspect of the Last of Us part 2 is that it will be considered a success, not because of fan opinion but because of record sales and revenue. Whilst the game is still extremely entertaining and in many ways ground breaking it will always be a 'what if'. It will never mean as much to me as the first game. Expand

Last of Us was a one off with a logical ending point and making a 2nd one is a disingenuous thing from a company that hasn't made a decent product in decades and every day is getting destroyed by Microsoft, LG, Samsung, Apple, and Disney.

As for this game, it's graphically appealing. The visuals look like they should be after an extensive development cycle. But that's the only bright spot. The story is slow, filled with holes, and is relatively pointless. The game is dark just to be dark. No light moments, no humor, no anything. Just a miserable existence. The gameplay is boring, and too many times you get to an area where there is nothing to do. It's like Naughty Dog wanted to make an open world game, but are incapable of doing so, so they went back to a linear nonsensical story. Gun play is as bad as the first game. Many new characters that are unlikable and meaningless. Another issue, if I wanted to watch a movie, I would watch a movie. This "game" is full of cut scenes. Way too many cut scenes. Clearly Naughty Dog was unable to create a game of a decent length, so it used quite a lot of filler.

Finally, this game is 10 hours too long. What should've been a 15 hour experience turned into a 25 hour snooze due to all the excessive filler. I am not sure why Naughty Dog went the route they did, but I now fully understand why so many of their devs now work for Xbox. If this is the best that studio can do, leaving the studio to express your creativity elsewhere is the best option.

I wanted to give this game a 6.5, but Metacritic doesn't do halves, and 7 is too high for this game.

But the game play is boring, same scripts than the first one, this could be done without the infected ones. There are some things to improve, I opened so much empty drawers...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is somewhat opposite of the first in terms of momentum. While the first builds up tension, emotional moments and ends in a huge climatic sequence, the part 2 builds up momentum up to the middle of the game, when you play Abby. From then on, it feels an unnecessary addition, as if the producers needed to justify the death of Joel. Joel had lots of reasons to die, and no less in a horrible way, so the idea to emphasize Abby's story feels kinda bloated.
On top of that, the final sequence is so utterly absurd - somewhat Die Hard vs Rocky - that it becomes a parody.

The game could have been great, even with Joel's death at the beginning, but the producers wanted to create a convoluted story with the idea that "nobody is truly bad/good", which is fundamentally wrong and childish.

Gameplay is good, graphics are good, sound is really good.

But the story, lost me halfway through and I could not get back to the tension building of the first half.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us has joined the ranks of beloved franchises that were ruined by bad writing despite having almost everything going for them: amazing graphics, great sound design, fantastic actors and an astronomical amount of money.

Sadly, all of this is wasted on a cookie cutter revenge story that loves to make you feel as miserable as possible, confusing this with deep and impactful writing. Charactes returning from the first game might as well be new characters altogether because they are often entirely unrecognizable, while at other times their old selves are at least shining through somewhat. Almost everyone is a terrible person doing terrible things to each other for the sole purpose of revenge. Parts of the story genuinely feel like an overly long fan fiction; the game could (and should) have been 6-8 hours shorter than it is. Nothing of value would have been lost.

One thing I will recommend the writers for is that they at least tried to make the Abby plotline work, and that the inclusion of it in itself was a pretty ballsy move. Taking risks like this shouldn't be shot down in general and could have been really good. Forcing the player to play as the murderer of Joel and showing that she is just another person in and of itself is not a bad concept, whatever some people might say. Not nearly as deep as the game thinks it is, but it could have worked fine. All the problems lie in the length and pacing. Abby is not a particularly likable character even if you exclude her murder of Joel, she's just too bland and goody two shoes for this.

If she absolutely had to be included, it should have been a short segment after each "day" we play as Ellie and not half the game in a row. Naughty Dog's and Sony's marketing was genuinely, unironically deceptive in this regard and should (but won't) have consequences. But much fewer people would have batted an eye if we had played as Abby for an hour at a time as a sort of "break" between Ellie chapters.
"Cycles of violence" is a nice, but meaningless, buzzword. What exactly does this game teach us, as opposed to the first game's profound message of paternity and selfishness? Revenge is bad. Murder is bad. People are, in fact, not black and white. A five year old understands this. The Last of Us Part II is miserable and violent for the sake of it. Don't mistake this for brilliant and game changing writing, because it isn't. It's an embarrasment.

    4/10 (Bad)

However, I can't in good conscience give this game a 4 as a sum total because there is more to a video game than just the story. Almost every other aspect of this game was phenomenal and deserving of some praise. All this in mind, I'd give it a 6/10 (Fine).

All in all, The Last of Us Part II was a huge disappointment after such a long wait. It's very telling that this game will still win all the awards and was a huge critical hit despite its mediocrity, whereas the fandom is much more divided on the topic. In my opinion, this game suffered from both positive and negative review bombing on this site (a 10 is just as ridiculous as a 0), but deserves the middle ground rating that resulted from this.

While the graphics are beautiful, and the combat much better than the first game, I can't help but hate the story. It just doesn't make sense, and in the end it's a series of pointless events that I have a hard time believing anyone would actually make. The game ended, and I felt that I had wasted the last 25 hours. I feel that the character of Abby was brought into the story in the worst possible way, and when your (nearly) first encounter with a new character is witnessing them commit a truly heinous act, you can't realistically expect from that point on that anything you present to try and show the "good side" of that character will have any meaningful effect. If we are introduced to a character as a monster, no amount of backstory or "point of view" storytelling will sway that initial impression. I also disliked how the events of the beginning of the game changed Ellie, she's much colder and cynical than she was in the first game, and her dynamic with Joel was one of my favorite aspects of that game. This sequel is also just too dark, there is no (or very very little) lightness in any of the storytelling or dialogue, and there's no balance. It's a shame, because aside from the storytelling every other aspect of this game is gorgeous and brilliant. Sad. Expand

And it kind of sucks to be honest.

Why did they retconned the ending of Part1? Why did they completely swapped out the two most important characters to replace them with morons? I don't get it. It looks and sounds awesome for sure, yet I can't appreciate the final product at all. Why? Because TLoU was never about looks, sound or even gameplay. Admit it, the gameplay always was mediocre at best. It was the narrative that made it a masterpiece. There was this overreaching major storyarc of saving humanity and there was the evolving relationship between a girl that never learned what true love is and a father who thought that true love died with his daughter years ago...and yet both found what they never expected: True love for each other. And at the end this true love was more important to Joel than humanity itself.

And TLoU2 **** on all of it! It's just a mere revenge story with no giant storyarc that pushes everything forward. Just bitterness back and forth with stupid character writing that really boggled my mind while playing it. Thanks Naughty Dog for destroying a franchise. I'm really glad the first one will always be a perfect interactive movie that didn't need a sequel anyway. It got a sequel...but I'll erase it out of my memory for sure.

My score is for the technical standards alone. The Story/Writing gets a bold 1/10 from me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a complete mess of a story. The writing, the pacing, and the excessive switching between characters, flashbacks, and timelines show how poorly this was executed. The characters, who we knew and loved in the first game, are butchered in their sequel. Worse, we're expected to care about these new, yet uninteresting ones, that are shoved upon our throats for the second half of the game. Apart from it's messy plot and disengaging characters, it was mostly the immersive combat, amazing graphics, and lengthy narrative that lifted this game for it's entire worth.

Ellie is no longer the defiant, joke-loving girl we adored in the first. No, she's taken a darker and more brutal path towards the concept of vengeance. Evidently, this makes Ellie a dry and uninteresting person to play as. Contrary to the trailers, we only get to play Joel for less than 5 minutes throughout the whole game, and his death is already shown before we even get our bearings. As for Dina, her character is alright. However, her relationship with Ellie felt as if the LGBT+ agenda was more emphasized, instead of having actual chemistry and character development between the two. It's as if Naughty Dog wanted to push the boundaries of socio-political inclusiveness with this one. For the amount of time I got to spend with Abby, I found myself engaging with her character a little but not enough to actually care. Abby and her crew had some interesting parts to them, yet their roles and characters soon degraded throughout the story’s progression. As for Owen, he was probably the worst of them all. Besides his creepy personality and confusing relationship with Abby, it felt like Owen served no real purpose in the game. None of them did. It’s as if the crew was mainly used for Abby’s character development, so the player would hopefully “like” her and see things from her perspective. I get the whole moral, but it just didn’t work for this one.

Storywise, the entire thing is a jumbled mess. The timelines, the transitions, and the flashbacks are excessive and suspense killing. As you play, you will find yourself jumping timelines and characters, switching between Abby and Ellie for the initial part of the game, and then finding yourself in a random flashback minutes later. Jumpscares are common but they lack suspense to build upon. As a result, everything becomes so cliche and predictable that you’ll eventually get bored. Gameplay-wise, it’s really good. The combat is well designed and the crafting system is like it used to be. However, there were some limitations I encountered when using the skill/pill system. Although it offers multiple branches for a different set of skills, It seems that each skill branch has to unlock it’s first skill before the second one could be. Therefore, you can’t spend pills on one skill before unlocking the one previous to it. As for combat, human NPC’s are really smart. Even at moderate difficulty, I constantly found myself being flanked, cornered, or flushed by enemies. Hounds will sniff you out if you don’t keep moving. There isn’t enough time to hide in bushes or covers because enemies will always keep you on your toes. Evidently, this renders stealth approaches difficult to execute.

In addition to your common runners, clickers, and bloaters from the previous game, Part 2 introduces a new collection to their zombie arsenal. For starters, Stalkers are too quiet to be seen in listen mode, and they’ll pounce from the shadows if you get too close. Shamblers are similar to bloaters. However, they excrete gas explosions at close range instead of throwing them like a bloater does. There are also zombies that hide in fungal growths in the walls, waiting for the chance to attack. During the later part of Abby’s gameplay, you’ll encounter something entirely different and much deadlier.

I respect Neil Druckmann for approaching Part 2 differently. Unfortunately, that approach never really delivered. Abandoning where the game left off, Naughty Dog forgets what made The Last of Us memorable. Instead, the characters we knew and loved were unfairly butchered and destroyed in the sequel, and in return, we’re forced to familiarize ourselves with new and loathsome ones. Although the combat and gameplay was a treat to experience, and the crafting system encouraged resourcefulness and practicality, the game’s messy writing, story progression, and lack of believability for it’s characters drags players along it’s lengthy narrative. Not only did the Last of Us Part 2 discredit its predecessor, it failed to carry whatever point it had in the beginning. Consequently, I don’t believe this game deserves the exaggerated threes and zeroes it earned. believed it deserves a 10 for compelling gameplay, graphics, length, and combat. However, minus 4 for choice of story, bringing it down to a strong 6.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story feels as if the script was dropped on the floor and it was picked up in a hurry to make sure no one noticed. The game has potential but screwed the pooch majorly by having everything happen at the wrong time. Why should I feel sympathetic to a dog I killed 12 hours ago? Or a character I murdered in roughly the same time? Why are you trying to make me like Abby when she murdered Joel in front of us, let the rage sizzle for 14 hours, and then try to convince us that she's relatable and likeable? This game would have been amazing if the story would have just panned out right, but honestly, the game just feels like it was mashed together in a hurry without the tinder care and planning of the first, and is just using the name of the first game to try and get it through.

For all the people giving this game a 10/10 I have to ask, would you even care about this game if it wasn't a sequel to one of your favourite games? Does the story actually feel smooth and beautiful to you, or do you just want to love it because you don't want to tarnish your love for the series? I seriously thought about giving this game a 0/10 just to combat all the people who I really think aren't giving their honest opinion about that game in order to keep the idea that their favourite game's reputation wasn't tarnished, or who loved it just because it showed LGBTQ+ support, or think disliking the game automatically makes you seem like a bigot, but I'm going to give my honest opinion.

Now for the positives, the graphics are beautiful, and this is one of the most accessible games of all time. I'm nearly convinced I could go blind and there would be some option that would allow me to play the game, but other than that I'm honestly disappointed. This was not an ideal followup to one of the best games of all time. If this was any other game, it would have just been an above-average popcorn game that people would have forgotten about in 2 years. I pray that Naughty Dog listens to constructive criticism and fix the problems with this game in a third entry.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The production values of this game are top notch. Graphics, environments, music and acting are great. One of the best of the current generation. Unfortunately the game is narrative driven and the writing is shoddy at best. The story is structured poorly, the characters are shallow and act in incomprehensible fashion. My idea of a great game is to be put the player in a world to make decisions and see how they play out. In this game I’m put into the world to do what the writers want, without real agency. For a big portion of the game I’m forced to act in a way I don’t want to, and even worse, play a character I don’t want to play with.

The gameplay itself is very similar to the original, almost no innovation, and it feels both unfair and illogical at times. It is not fair that I’m against a dozen NPC:s with a gun, but each time I can get only 1-2 billets from them. The scarcity is artificial and does not make sense. Playing with the Abby character, a solider for several years, is too similar to playing with Ellie. For some reason she learns about crafting, gun improvements and close combat skills only on the days I’m playing the character, the exact days when Ellie is in town. Unrelated to my rating, I find Sony/Naughty Dog PR and marketing decisions suspicious. Not allowing the reviewers to talk about the whole game and misleading gamers on the content of the game was not cool, almost like a bait-and-switch. Given the game they made, I kinda understand, but can not approve.

The bond between Joel & Ellie was intoxicatingly beautiful. And when I heard the sequel announced years ago I was beyond excited. Even though the first game was a close shut experience. But ngtl the more I heard about this the last two years the more I was dreading it. Up until the release date I was scared it would ruin what its predecessor accomplished in gaming. Did it? Well yeah. Okay let’s do this. To start off, the story is eh compared to its legendary counterpart. And I love Ellie don’t get me wrong but—she’s not compelling as a main character which is why she worked well as a supporting character. This game had to invent an arc for her by destroying a more rich character’s narrative. The arc of Joel was tremendous and this game just throws it away for a **** revenge plot that goes no where. It was a crime to fans. Now all my criticisms lay with the narrative as the game is gorgeous! Definitely a technical achievement. The combat is more enhanced even though it’s your basic over the shoulder mechanics. Ngtl there was intense moments and I was zoned in. But going back to the plot, why was this game made? I’m here for story. The continuation of these characters &this world. Which could’ve been done so much better. The only time I got any levity was the flashbacks of Joel & Ellie which instead made me want to play the first game instead. Which in return made me more depressed. The reason for a character arc or a hero’s journey is to learn or grow from what the story drives the character. Which worked for Joel and him overcoming the death of his daughter in Ellie—but here no one learns a damn thing, even from an empty arc. And it’s not like I’m saying the game is bad. I as a narrative appreciater is just trying to understand why this sequel was made besides to piss off a dedicated fan base. I’m still mixed on this. And I’m happy people love it. But I expected more. Especially with its god tier predecessor. That should’ve been left well enough alone.

Už je to dlouho co mě iritovalo chování postav v nějaké hře a nikdy bych to nečekal zrovna tady. Všechno mi to přišlo strašně odfláknuté, a přitom mě napadá snad deset věcí co by stačilo udělat a bylo by to vše mnohem plynulejší a uvěřitelnější. To to nikdo neviděl? Props for the lgbtq representation. Graphics and game play are great. But this story is throw-away garbage. Super pretentious thinking we needed to be taught that revenge is a fool's errand. And Ellie ended up a terrible, toxic, selfish person after being so loveable in the first game. It's heartbreaking to see what happened to a character. It didn't have to be this way.

The ending ruins the whole game. The gameplay is amazing. The story is really good, but the last 5 minutes of the game ruin the whole story. In short it is the Game of Thrones of video games but with an even worst ending.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. From a writing standpoint, the first game was a quality movie, and this game with all the exposition and tell don't show -mentality, is an okay tv-series.

Naughty Dog doesn't know how to make a bad game if you just look at the graphics and the mechanics, although not everything is perfect in the combat/stealth/puzzle and whatnot sections. Still very enjoyable though! The problem is the story. Deep flaws in logic, things without explanation, and the worst thing of all, watering down the characters and changing them profoundly, again, without the logic.

One flashback scene with Joel and Ellie tops all other parts in this game. And really it isn't even a surprise. One quality scene vs lackluster tv-writing and directing... Is this the new standard?

I don't remember Nate getting his head bashed in after killing thousands of people in Uncharted games. Although now that i think about it... i haven't played the Lost Legacy!

My advice to gaming studios as a random player without absolutely no authority and experience in making a game: quit while you're ahead, and make other games.

My advice to owners and producers: milk the cow dry, just as you did here. Nicely done.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not bothered by the woke aspect of the game, i'm not bothered with the big event that happens in the beginning of the game. But I think the game is a failure. The game tries too hard to question the apology of violence and always punish the player to play the game as it is intended. "My dad has been murdered ? why not kill like 1000 persons to get my revenge ! And at the end let's spare the killer because i am not a monster !" Ridicule. The second playthrough with Abby is absolutely useless because She and Ellie are at the same state before and after that part of the game. No character development whatsoever. I didn't want Ellie to kill Abby, worse, I prefer Abby over Ellie because her life has been ruined by Ellie/Joel at so many levels. So no, Abby is not the problem for me. Joel had to pay in some way. Tommy and Ellie vengeance is uncalled for and the characters keep makind bad decisions over and over again. When Joel went berserk at the end of the first game it was understandable, relatable (although overkill) . Here ? not so much. The game punishes us for what it forces us to do. The game is wonderful though and polished to the extreme. The gunfights/stealth are also good. Expand

I absolutely LOVE the 1st game, but The Last of Us Part 2 is a huge let down.

To be fair, The Last of Us is such an iconic and beloved game that's very tough to follow up with a good sequel, let alone one that surpasses the original. Just like the Matrix sequels couldn't really match the 1st movie.

The Last of Us Part 2 is objectively a better game in technical terms. It's got better graphics, better motion and performance capture, bigger environments, better AI, more refined gameplay (at last, a dodge button). In other words, it's got great production values. Yet it fails miserably where it matters the most: the game experience, and the lasting impression it leaves on players.

First of all, let me address the big elephant in the room. The game has caused controversy online due to seemingly promoting a progressive political agenda. Yes, the game portrays some LGBT characters alongside straight people, but their presence is not an issue. The game's real issues are far more fundamental. But dare I say, I've had enough of this agenda, especially when it's not applied so "innocently". If Neil Druckmann includes LGBT characters in his game because the story demands it, fine by me, but please don't take advantage of LGBTs so you can call yourself a "progressivist" and potentially open Hollywood's door later on. We know how things work.

The original game had a simple yet powerful story punctuated with memorable characters and events. The sequel is a shallow tale about hate and the cycle of revenge, with no memorable characters. I won't spoil the game's plot, but let's say the game's narrative focuses on a dozen characters, and as a result loses all of its focus. By the game's end, I had little to no impression left on me.

Another thing that hampers the game experience, is the non-diverse gameplay and the game's length. You traverse the environment, explore an area, and either you loot everything you can or have to dispatch an enemy team, and repeat for 30 hours or so. Puzzles don't exist. There is no trail-stealthily-someone mission. There are no time-limited events. There is no hunt-an-animal-for-food mission. There are no mini-games. There are no secondary dialogue trees to actively pursue, only those you can trigger with the triangle button. Even the fact you can play the guitar is under-utilized. They introduced a few new monsters to the infected roster, and only the Stalkers are a great addition, they gave me a few good jump scares. But at some point there is a horrible boss fight with a creature that reminded me of some recent appalling Resident Evil games.

I understand that Naughty Dog wanted to try something different with The Last of Us Part 2, but frankly they didn't deliver a good experience. It can happen even to one of the world's best games development studios which has released multiple great games in a row. Last time they released a game with a lacklustre experience was Jak II on PS2, or the 1st Uncharted on PS3. I'm sure Naughty Dog will re-organize themselves and their next game will be a return to form. But The Last of Us Part 2 should have been much better than it is.

It's that through it's the games 25+ hour of gameplay, it fails to come to a satisfying conclusion. What is here are character decisions that are entirely at odds with what was presented of the characters in both the 2013 original and through most of the 2020 sequel.

Review bombs aside, I am torn on how I feel about TLOU2. I paid no attention to the hype or the post-launch aftermath so I was able to pop it into the PS4 with absolutely nothing to color my opinion of what was to transpire. To wit, most of the complaints about an agenda are ultimately unfounded, but that only means that the game isn't 'trash', but I am struggling to say that it's great.Review bombs aside, I am torn on how I feel about TLOU2. I paid no attention to the hype or the post-launch aftermath so I was able to pop it into the PS4 with absolutely nothing to color my opinion of what was to transpire. To wit, most of the complaints about an agenda are ultimately unfounded, but that only means that the game isn't 'trash', but I am struggling to say that it's great.

I really enjoyed my time with TLOU2 while also disliking it at the same time, but not to the point where I would call it a bad game. On the one hand, as with its predecessor, Naughty Dog has made a solid stealth action game and proven that it can make games where weapons sound and feel powerful unlike with its other globetrotting action franchise (that, for the record, I despise - all four of 'em). On the other hand, it is absolutely enslaved by the story it wants to tell and the game suffers for it despite much of its execution being really well done.

Like my opinion, TLOU2 seems ultimately divided on what it wants to be. As a game, it is solid fare, but brings absolutely nothing new to the table and doesn't further the genre one bit. However, its production values are through the roof and if you have any appreciation for 3D artistry, it is found here in droves. Every little detail is accounted for and in a delightfully-smooth way. I spent much of my time simply admiring the environments, knowing just how much work went into each prop, character, and piece of debris, let alone gawking at the tremendous achievements in lighting. Yet despite all that, you're still scavenging for crafting items, sneaking around boxes, desks, crates, or whatever, and stabbing or choking people out. Unfortunately, due to the story TLOU2 wants to tell, you spend more time fighting people than zeds and a lot of the tension and suspense that the original title excelled at providing (courtesy of no-longer-at-Naughty-Dog Bruce Straley) is missing as TLOU2 becomes a standard shooter. It's very clear when danger is approaching as you'll pull out a weapon. It's very clear when you've killed everyone because the music stops and the character tells you so. It is very clear when you are expected to simply be exploring because it's safe to do so. Where traversal of the environment in the original was often clever and thrilling, here it's simply going from one arena to another and it just. Doesn't. Stop. For a game that brings so little to the table in terms of gameplay, to stretch what little there is over several tens of hours became absolutely mind-numbing, especially when the AI is so extremely exploitable. The game excels, as expected, when you are traversing zed-infested areas because they are relentless when alerted, but these are relatively few and far between. Most of the time, you'll be facing humans and they will file at you one by one, rendering most of the cat-and-mouse game completely moot. I often found myself going through empty areas because I simply killed everyone in one corner.

It's the other half of the game's identity - the one in which it pretends to be a film - that holds the game hostage. While it has been accused of having an agenda, I have to say that people with agendas tend to be more overt about it. Instead, TLOU2 suffers from an obsessive need to be understated and subtle. It's really not about furthering politics on any level (it's really not that deep), but hopelessly devoted to the "craft" of the storytelling. To its credit, it doesn't feel the need to bash you over the head and say "look at what we're doing," and quite often, the execution of key elements in the story are expertly done. It's the stuff surrounding it that really drags things out and the best way I can describe it is like a terrific novel that could be made better if you ripped about 200 pages out of it without losing a thing. Because of the obsession to give you as little explicit material as possible, you spend most of your time simply slogging through drip-fed revelations when much of the game could actually be cut out. If an entire third of your story is simply travelling from one point to another (and remember, the gameplay doesn't evolve at all), then most of it can be cut. As a result, the story isn't bad, but it's entirely too drawn out and the game itself is ultimately too damn long because of it.

Ultimately, it comes down to a game that, on the whole, is fantastic, but could use a tremendous amount of improvement. If gameplay evolved over its 30-40 hours of runtime, perhaps it would have been more compelling. If much of the fluff and uneventful content was removed, perhaps it would have been more thrilling. The story can be poked several times for its weaknesses, but it could also be held up several times for its strengths. Some characters have wildly inconsistent motivations or logic, yet those same characters can have extremely strong foundations and compulsions as well. It's rather inconsistent, and that's the rub.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Game as an overall is not terrible like 0s,1s, or 2s. I agree with the opinions of many people that the graphics, atmosphere, and gameplay are top-notch as always from Naughty Dog.

What’s let’s everyone down is the story which is obvious. That most of the people here who are the fans of the original story dislike it with passion just as much as I do. But beware down below are the spoilers for the story. Those who do not want the story to be spoiled please do not read it !!!!!

Five main things that ruined the story so much

    - Killing of Joel in the first two hours of the game IN THE WORST WAY POSSIBLE WITH FUKING GOLF CLUB !!!!
    - Playing as Abby the person who killed Joel who NO ONE CARES ABOUT !!!!
    - New characters like Dina and Jesse are useless, unlike Joel they don’t have good chemistry with Ellie at ALL!!!
    - Ellie lets go of her vengeance by not killing Abby because Joel’s vision SERIOUSLY !!!!
    - The most miserable ending ever DINA LEAVES ELLIE WITH HER CHILD, ELLIE CAN’T EVEN PLAY HER GUITAR ANYMORE because Abby bites two of her finger off from her final fight and THE GUITAR WAS PLAYED IN MEMORY OF JOEL THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON TO HER LIFE !!!!

Seriously WTF WAS NEIL THINKING WHEN HE WROTE THIS SORRY EXCUSE OF AN ENDING TO THIS GAME. The only reason I gave 6 like most people giving 0s, 1s, or 2s was that the atmosphere, gameplay, and graphics were just FREAKIN amazing for a PS4 game that it could pass off as a PS5 GAME !!!!

The game mechanics also get repetitive and boring after the 300th kill. The story and characters (most of them) are poorly written and shallow with a lot of slow points, and no where near to the level of the first game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Why would you do this to us. This is what happens when you make the characters fit the plot and not vice-versa, you know, when it works. Joel turns into an absolutely idiotic character irecognizable from the last game; he helps a damsel in distress, he & Tommy say their names in front of a stranger twice, which, Joel, knowing what he did, would never do, and then Tommy & him tell them where they currently reside and the former thinks it's a good idea to let them re-stock their supplies. May I remind you that these two are badass survivors who know their fair share of knowledge of the world around them & the people that live in it. Joel completely called a bluff on the ambush that he & Ellie were being a victim of with only a few visual cues. I think this encapsulates all of the Last of Us Pt. 2's plot devices, which fall victim on the same kind of mistakes.

For a game so well designed in other departments (level design is amazing, specially the underwater-sniper-Abby vs. Tommy scene; graphically, the game is stunning, even if we're getting into uncanny valley real fast), the game has some serious plot holes and a story that leaves you a really bad taste, not for the death of your favorite characters, but because it's poorly structured. Clearly, the Abby section should've been first, in order to empathize with her & her reasons.

I don't wanna extend myself so much, but something I haven't heard so much hate about is the gameplay, which deserves it's criticisms. When you don't improve onto an overall gameplay mechanic which was stablished in 2013, there's something wrong with your game. You know what games happened between then & 2020? Metal Gear Solid V, Dishonored 2, etc. And yes, I'm focusing mainly on examples made by stealth games because TLOU2 is, primarely, a stealth game. These games, too, know how to spice things up with clever level design, which I think TLOU2 has, and clever and revolutionary game mechanics, which this game lacks, and it shows in the repetitive gameplay.

The last thing to point out by my part is that the game punishes you and makes you feel like "The Bad Guy" playing as Ellie, at least, while giving you no alternative option for murder. Joel's death is shown almost on it's entirety, with all it's gore & graphic detail involved, while, when Ellie catches Nora, it's not shown at all how she massacres her, when it would've been satisfactory for the main audience. When your game portrays a message of "REVENGE = BAD" you should stick to it and give the player some valid options to make the least killing possible.
