The Last of Us 2 is to me, the PS4's answer to Game of Thrones.
The Last of Us remains the best game I have ever played, I adore it beyond words. The same can be said for the DLC of Left Behind, both stories are spectacularly told, and I have yet to find a franchise that is able to create such an attachment and love for their characters as much as this one.

The Last of Us remains the best game I have ever played, I adore it beyond words. The same can be said for the DLC of Left Behind, both stories are spectacularly told, and I have yet to find a franchise that is able to create such an attachment and love for their characters as much as this one.
There is no denying that the sequel would undoubtedly leave people unhappy, the pressure on this game meant that nothing short of perfection would be accepted, as should be the case because the unfortunate truth of this game is that it has for me, and for many others, tarnished the beauty of its predecessor.
It should not need to be said that graphically the Last of Us 2 is indeed a masterpiece. Other elements such as the gameplay and the acting are improved but stay true to the original., it is perhaps what makes the story of this game all the harder to accept. I played this game with a mixture of heartbreak, anger, and disinterest. Heartbreak for all the artists, actors, programmers, everyone who worked so hard especially amidst the rumours of crunch time behind the scenes; anger that the writers had failed to match the high standards of the artists and the original. Disinterest because I felt no enjoyment throughout the second half, and indeed part of the first.

It took me 3 attempts to finish this game. Admittedly only because i felt I owed it to those who worked so hard, and to my adoration of the original, I prayed the payoff would be worth it.
Neil Druckmann said that they would not create a sequel without a real reason, indeed the motivation here demands the story be told, the story begins as a mission for revenge - pure and simple. The game plays out with a similar linearity to the first one with regards to gameplay, but with a strong reliance on flashbacks and alternative POVs to create a depth that quite frankly, it could have done without. It has taken me many hours to accept the story and direction taken by Druckmann, I have however still not forgiven it. The insistence on forcing this outdated and frankly unwanted trope that 'an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind' is what makes this game so unlikeable. The message is too forced, so much so that it detracts from the likeability of even those characters from the original. It also does not help that they altered the trailer, substituting characters to avoid leaks.
At the end of the day I cannot score this game poorly because it is so beautiful in every aspect but story. It has though ruined the beauty of the Last of Us for me. I wish it hadn't, I really wanted to fall in love with this game, but no matter how many excuses I make, I cannot forgive the laziness of the writing. I see hints of the bittersweet nuances of the original, especially in the flashbacks, which makes this review all the harder. But I felt lied to when I finished this game, angry that the very same people who created the first game with all its depth and heartbreak, could turn around and accept this as a worthy sequel.
This review is not an angry rage against a direction I did not agree with, it is a solemn warning of the disappointment to come for any who choose to play this.

    Gameplay - 8/10
I LOVE the stealth oriented gameplay, the areas of gameplay are bigger and more vertical, there are some new fun to use weapons, stealth got better just by being able to crawl, but most of it is pretty much more of the same from the first game, it was just constantly interrupted by cutscenes and the context of the story made me sometimes NOT ENJOY being good at the game. Also too much jump scares, too many times the game forcefully takes all my gear when I just got comfortable with using all of the tools they gave me.

Narrative script and dramaturgy - 5/10
The characters from the previous game were absolutely out of their previous characteristics, one of the most belloved characters from previous game was flatout disrespected by the writers from the very start of the game and awkwardly recalled in flashbacks later to what we actually wanted to see after playing the first game, problem is it was out of beat of funcional story of this genre. My personal and professional oppinion is that this event should have taken place roughly half way through the game, not at the beginning.

Other characters were acting pretty ridiculously knowing who they are what life experiences they all have. The motivation and actions of lots of those characters is just completely crazy and nonsensical. All the constant jumping back and forth between playable characters to explain it, flashbacks and unplayable cutscenes stopped me from getting to know the new characters I was supposed to care for and empathise with them later on in the game. Lots of reasoning the story used either didnt make sense in the reality of that world or was in direct contradiction of what the game tells you couple of scenes earlier.

Lots of smalltalk between characters during gameplay or exploration was cringeworthy not just for me, but for both of my flatmates watching me play the game. It just came off like a fan fiction based on the world of Last of Us 1 written for a specific niche of the audience of the first game, but without fully respecting the previous game.

Lingering on super violent scenes and letting characters that already went through a lot of violence and rought life, but also know peaceful life in safe communities, go through all this crazyness without having anything to reflect on it and just keep on being hellbent on more violence is surprising and shocking and I get what kind of experience they try to create for players, but the first game wasnt like that, it used violence differently when it comes to the main plot of the game, it built suspence and brought points and realisations both to the player and the character that were not so shocking, but emotionally way more hard hitting than anything in this game, I just remember feeling shocked by some cheap jumpscares and disgusted by taking some violent scenes a bit too far and completely let down by the ending.

SO, how would I rate this game overall?
7.5/10 - for the goold old Last of Us gameplay and the technical quality

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Calling the story poor is lazy.
Calling the story perfect is lazy
The story is brave and the morale that is tried to be established is alluring.
I think for most people, where the story "fails" is that you have expected to see another story about your heroes. You expected to get a character development and an arc that makes sense for a fan, and that is something that Neil will have to deal with the team in the future. By the end of the day one could even say that you have created trailers that pointed in a wrong direction....you misguided our hopes.

My recommendation would be to re-think the structural time-line that had been chosen and try to understand it's challenges for the future. By the end of the day there are so many themes and motives that need to be understood in order to really capture the meaning of the game that it would be taking a lot of Empathy, Forgiveness, Love to understand. How much love did you show the people by misguiding their hopes and emotions? How much Love did you show people by butchering Joel like that and how much Forgiveness did you offer to People by giving them this end?

Also, my recommendation would be to review what is expected of the player (empathy) vs. what is shown by the characters (Abby, where is the empathy?)

Did Elli lost herself? Lost her fingers, lost her ability to play the guitar? Her ability to connect with Joel ? Who is Elli now and how will she get back on track? ...7 years for this is really harsh.

Did Abby forgive Elli? Will she be able to understand her sins? Will she be able to grow a conscious? Does she still feel it was right?....

Why did Joels brother go to Elli and requested revenge? Isn't he the real adult? Doesn't he KNOW his brother? Joel never would have wanted this...

The game creates a lot of questions and you leave people alone. I like being alone, but others might feel differently. It is an absolute hate-it-or-love-it product and you have to deal with that Naughty Dog.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved a lot about this game. The graphics, The terrain and sound design. The gameplay was rather enjoyable but a bit repetitive. I liked and hated the story. I think everyone knew even without seeing the leak that Joel would die. I don't dislike that he died, but the way he died felt so quick and dry. It felt as if they were just trying to kill him super quick and it felt unjust. I'd rather see him dying a heroic death than the one I was given. But enough about Joel's death. The ending is something i didn't hate nor like. You as the player have either seen Abby's dead friends or killed the rest of them. So why not kill Abby? Because Other people (like Lev) might come for you? You've gone this far just to track her down and kill her, and now you give up because you're scared? And then my BIGGEST hate for this game is playing as Abby Whilst fighting Ellie. Just why? I see a lot of people comparing it to playing as Micah after killing Arthur and comparing Abby to Micah. I see why some people see it like that. With the first statement I completely agree. For all the players that played the first game, they (probably) felt connected to Joel (Same as with Arthur) But to then play as their Killer is something most people would hate. Now for the second statement. I disagree completely. Micah was meant to be hated, Abby was meant to be sympathized with. As a "Final Verdict" I definitely recommend this game to players loving a sad, emotional story. There are definitely some good moral things in there. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sort of a failure, sort of a masterpiece The Last of Us Part 2 tries to blur the line of protagonists and antagonists. What is evil and what is not. The problem is that some of the character development/inconsistent behaviour or particular aspects of the story fall flat due to lack of said development, and the bigger problem is that all of those aspects could’ve been easily avoided by switching/tweaking some minor details here or there, while maintaining the same story. Now, the story is polarizing. Love it or hate it, but I think it’s pretty amazing. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, where you get to experience love and care, only to be left with void and despair. It’s not a fun experience in the end of the day, but it’s definitely worth it. Besides, it’s not the type of universe, where people get to be happy. Starting with the original The Last of Us, it was pretty clear, that it aims to show brutality of the world our characters are in. The story makes sense, but it’s how it’s delivered that makes it illogical in some parts. Again, it’s just little things, and I’ll gladly close my eyes to those aspects, as it’s pretty clear what Naughty Dog tried to do here, but it’s still disappointing of how they missed those minor details. Don’t listen to all those angry kids upset about Joel’s death or presence of LGBT themes, they clearly missed the point. Experience it for yourself. Everything but the story is 10/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ll try to explain the best I can the reason for my review, and there will be spoilers probably. I finished the game almost a week ago. I waited till now to avoid giving a rate based on what the story was intended to. The gameplay, the only flaw I actually remember was few times where the triangle button for action didn’t show (I could see the circle indicating interaction but the triangle button to do it wouldn’t show and wouldn’t work). But that’s ok, the rest was pretty much flawless. The puzzles, were witty enough to entertainment but not hard enough to make you get bored because you couldn’t get through it, I like them. I did found tiring some times the looting mechanics, repetitive, but that’s me; I know a lot of players that loved it. Music, outstanding as we thought, the music for each scene were so accurate, they would complete the immersive experience by starting in the right moment. Graphics were awesome, I was speechless more than a few times. The accurate description of plants taking over cities, the moss on rainy cities, the tracks on the snow and mud sections were surprisingly good. It was pretty good. Now to the controversy, the story: I don’t really hate the story, I understand the message behind the story. We hate seeing how Ellie does everything Joel never wanted her to do, she throws her life away searching for revenge instead of trying to get comfort on the family she had with Dina and JJ. But that’s ok, that’s the point, to feel it even harder because you’re watching how revenge is ruining a character you have the urge to protect, due to the first game, and everyone around. What messed up the game for me was playing as Abby and here is why:
•Abby has a game style pretty close to Joel’s. The way she executes sneaky attacks, the need to craft shiv, the ability to press down and x to quickly change the camera point of view etc. •We are forced to guide her to the theater where she kills Jessie, shots Tommy and almost gets Dina killed. •We are forced to fight Ellie in a way that resembles way too much the fight against David on the first (can’t do direct attack, have to hide and avoid make noise, have different stages to defeat her, really even the advice in the screen was similar “use listening mode to get the upper hand” ) •We have to fight Tommy as a sniper with Abby, the same way Joel had to get through a sniper on the first one. •lev and Abby bonding story resembling Joel and Ellie’s. Where Abby finds a reason to redeem herself with lev, the same way Joel finds a way to redeem himself by protecting Ellie. • this one is not that important, but also contributed. Back to the hospital, we see this conversation between the doctor and Marlene, the purpose is for us to understand that they were just making things right... but Ellie was right there, they could’ve ask, but they chose to kill her without remorse. So, while I understand the “one for the many”, I can’t say I understand their choice here. For this reason the rest of the story lost the weight it had. In general the game felt as if the developers were mocking me as a gamer and fan of the first game. They put so many thing that resembled the first game on abbys character knowing that we would hate it, that it felt they were laughing at me. So, my score is due to the poor respect they had for the players. And because to be honest when I finished it, the words that came out of me was: is that it? At that point I want even mad or sad, nothing. Finishing: I won’t discourage people from buying it, I’m honestly just sharing my experience, which can or can’t be like yours. I will recommend tho, that if your going in because of the story, watch some spoilers, because there are lots of disappointed gamers for different reasons. If you’re playing without having played the 1st one or just because of the gameplay, go ahead, you will probably love it. Have fun, Barxco.

The game relays on a lot of coincidences, like when you play as Abby at the beginning of the game and she gets swarmed with zombies, for some reason Joel, who was in a sheltered place, decided to go out there and help her, maybe the time he has spent with Ellie has soften him up, but then he goes to her place, full with her friends, without even investigating first why would she try to help a complete strange out, and the he gives her his name! which lead to his death. it felt like a cheap way to get the story rolling. the game has a lot of situations where it relays on these kinds of coincidences, but other than the story, everything else is near perfect.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After playing 48 hours, two playthroughs and gaining the platinum trophy I am finally ready to let out my opinion of this conserverial sequel.

Before I get into the negative I will like to start with what I loved about the game.

    1. Ellies half of the game had the most interesting part of the story and best cutscenes. When she gets to bounce off side characters like Dina ( who was one of my favorite side characters) it really showed a great side of Ellie.

    2. Abbys gameplay was the most fun since it was more of my play style. While Ellie sneaks around Abby is an army of one. With a flamethrower, hunting rifle and pipe bombs nothing can stop her. She can literally just punch an infected to death and it is brutal.

    3. The one thing everyone praises this game for even if you just hated it is the graphics. This game is beyond beautiful. The music is always perfect for what's happening.

Now let's get into what I disliked

    1. This game just dragged on and on. It tricked me I believe like three times where I thought I was close to the end oh no I still have 10 hours left alright okay here is the ending nope. Not going to lie got pretty frustrated and just wanted to finish it already. In fact where Ellie and Dina are in that awesome farm house then Tommy comes in telling her where abby was last seen . Honestly I would of been okay with the last scene Ellie going off into the night leaving Dina sad and feeling alone. Then bam alright setting up for the next game.

    2. The actual ending was just anti climatic. Ellie travels two states fights of this evil rattlers frees Abby from dying on the beach lets her grab a boat about to let them go and then goes no can't let you go. Okay has this big fight about to drown her and then was like nah go. Okay go backs to the farmhouse and no duh Dina is gone.

All in all it is not better than the first one and doesn't add much to mechanics/gameplay. I dont think its the worst game this year and I understand where they were going with the whole revenge thing it just didn't quite land.

А last of us 2 это не об этом. It's slighty above average. The graphics look amazing and the atmosphere is thrilling, but the gameplay feels clunky at times. The biggest flaw of the game is the story. Too many plot holes, accompanied by decisions from the main protagonists that make little to no sense. Virtually every time you encounter infected it is in a closed dark space, where you see the world through the circle of light that is your torch. It’s forces a particular style of play on you (if you can see what you’re doing.) It’s also predictable: every time you find ammunition you can be sure you’ll soon be coming up against infected, normally in a cellar. They also seem to miraculously appear out of nowhere. Your movements are slow. Switching weapons is an unnecessary ordeal and getting stuck in (yet another) dark basement detracts from the story. The problem is there are too many sequences like this. They’re just unimaginative. You feel cheated and it interrupts the narrative. The story is an heroic and sincere attempt at driving the narrative forward from the first game. However there are a few too many flashbacks. The use of ‘notes’ lying around telling you the zombie apocalypse is a bad thing gets tedious. Some of the flashbacks are genuinely well crafted. The game treads a fine line between sentimentality and an exploration of relationships between the different characters and factions. Yes I know it’s a game. So was the first one and that was brilliant. That is to say unpretentious. I’m glad I’m playing it and I would recommend it. You can make up your own mind.

I was so looking forward to this.

...what I DO NOT like about this is how much time we spend with Abby. STOP!!! I dont dislike her character and I even loved playing with her at times. I do think we needed to spend more time with Ellie. The Ellie to Abbie ratio is off. Motivations were clear and understandable. I didnt care to play as Abby after she killed our beloved Joel. After that it felt like Abby was shoved in my face. But I justdidnt care. Joel should have died after we spent time with Abby and began liking her. Joel's death may have made sense on paper this way and I can even accept it. It was out of place here and was far too early. The game itself was almost copy and paste from the first one minus some small tweaks here and there. I dont understand the death threats and the super negative things posted. I love Naughty Dog. However I dont think I'm going to replay this one. Just due to the fact I know I wont spend time with Ellie and Joel. Maybe I could have grown to like Abby more if she didn't kill Jpel so early. I wanted to attach myself to Abby more but in the end I couldn't talk myself into it. I hate that I didnt love this one. Thanks for the effort Naughty Fog but this wasn't what any of us were expecting. And I mean that in the bad way. I know it's not the job to give us everything we want. I also think it is part of the job to take care of the characters. That unfortunately was not done. ....but I wholeheartedly think it's because of the reasons I listed. I do think alot of love and care went into this game. I had no issues with sexual orientation or appearance.

Best parts were the cut scenes of the past whem they show ellie with joel but it kinda took away from The story. Expand

First of all its a great game, I enjoyed the majority of my time I played but unfortunately its not nearly as gripping as the tale told in the first The Last Of Us.

First of all he combat I did actually enjoy quite a bit, it felt hard hitting and visceral which is super satisfying, each arrow shot looked like it really impacted each and every enemy, the mechanics with dodging and attacking I haven't seen elsewhere, so great work in that respect.

The graphics and environments are stunning as expected from Naughty Dog, the detail is crazy with every corner and crevice filled with overgrown plants and details and truly makes you feel as if you are in a post apocalyptic world. Truly pushes the PS4 to its limits whilst keeping a stable experience.

Unfortunately now we have to move onto the story, which I didn't think I would have to say about a The Last of Us title, but its not very good, pretty bad in fact, and that is it separated from the spectacle of the first game. It feels really messy with a constant, jarring shift in perspective between characters, some who Naughty Dog really want you to care about, so much so that whole sections, or even the whole of the story will just seem terrible if you don't care enough about them. In comparison, The Last of Us gave us Ellie and Joel to relate with and even if you somehow didn't like the characters you still understood that there is a mission to be done to help the human race. Here there isn't any of that and completely relies on you caring hard for those characters with no story backbone but that. I can see what Naughty Dog attempted with this style of story telling but unfortunately it didn't succeed and I really had to force myself through the latter part of the game...

There's alot more I could say about the story but that would start getting into spoiler territory and that's isnt what this is for. So overall I would say 6.5/10 but due to the rating system here I feel as if I would be stretching too hard to give this game a 7/10 so for me, here it takes a 6.

    Pros:
    > Satisfying combat with visceral fighting.
    > Gorgeous environments and amazing graphics.

    Cons:
    > Storyline was ambitious but didnt meet the bar to keep me hooked.
    > Emotional attachment to the characters were relied on too heavily for the story, and I didn't feel
emotionally invested in them for the story to hit its beats.

I saw the critic reviews and am honestly shocked, it feels more and more difficult to trust them these days. I can totally understand if someone happened to enjoy this game, but seeing an insane amount of reviews saying 9/10 or 10/10 is kind of shocking that these are the people who rate these games. Always read user reviews before purchasing a game! We aren't paid off like many critics actually are, we are just real gamers like yourself who are emotionally invested in purchasing a game.

I hope Naughty Dog learn from this and improve for their next adventure.

    - Sam

note: I would only recommend buying this game once it is on offer for around $30 max. If you are looking for a different PS4 game to play now before the PS4's life cycle is over I highly recommend Ghost of Tsushima, masterpiece of this generation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is truly beautiful in terms of its graphics. The environment, character models, weapons and the cut scenes are really a tribute to the designers. Your eyes will feast on the incredible aesthetic of this game. Along with its visual beauty, the soundtrack put behind every moment is remarkable. The deafening screams of your most recently shot enemy or the gentle and calm plucks on Ellie’s guitar will satisfy your desire to be immerse in this post-apocalyptic world. At times, especially during the most violent scenes the sound track is frighteningly realistic. Gun shots, screams, blood dripping and much more to leave you uneasy in your seat whilst playing. The gameplay itself has some clunky moments, switching weapons in the heat of a fire fight was sometimes awkward and usually resulted in getting shot in the head or ripped apart by a Clicker. Although clunky sometimes, for the most part the firefights and deadly battles with infected were high energy and full of adrenaline but naturally fluid. There were so many times I was on the edge of my seat desperate to get through a bloody encounter with Ellie’s foes. The weapons are fantastic and you use different weapons depending on whether you are playing as Ellie or Abby which is a nice difference to the gameplay but I’m a little disappointed that in my opinion Abby got nearly all the best weapons. This game gives you shotguns, Molotov cocktails, Pipe bomb, Revolvers, Rifles, Bows and crossbows and even more to help you survive the horror of the Last of Us Part II. Dark hallways, fungus-infested rooms and desolate buildings make for a terrifying adventure through Seattle. As well as the high energy moments there were times of tension, anxiety and true fear as you try to navigate on to your next objective. This game is certainly not for the faint of heart. However, as much as the game has its positives it also has some big negatives. For many of us the Last of Us was a masterful story. It made us laugh, cry and cry some more and maybe even just smile a little at the wholesome moments. This is what people waited 7 years to see the sequel to. It fair to say the story took a rather harsh turn for me. The first half of the story is mostly good and at the 2 hour mark we see Joel butchered by Abby and that drives a hatred for her immediately. This move really twists up the story as you are forced to play as her later on. Abby is supposed to be the one we hate but we are lead down a road that basically end with “Good and Evil is subjective”. This I find to be an interesting take but it in turn destroys a major part of Ellie’s character in the process especially towards the latter part of the game when Ellie leaves her baby and girlfriend Dina to go and find Abby. The characters should drive the plot but here it seems the plot is driving the characters.
We are introduced to new characters which is great if they actually had serious depth. The new characters in the story have very little backstory and I was waiting and waiting for the character to shine through! Unfortunately, the parts when they actually do they are killed before we can learn much more about them. Abby is also a main area I find to be that let’s the story down. Firstly, she is incredibly muscular and especially by most people’s standards. This seems rather silly in the context of the game where survival is paramount, food, water, ammo and fighting for your life should be your top priority. Making muscle gains is very much a 1st World passion and interest that requires a strict diet regime, regular exercise and plenty of time to recover from your workout. Not such luxury would probably exist in a world full of constant danger. Not only that but there are very few women that are capable of even reaching that muscle size in the world right now and all in all it seems implausible
Owen is a new character that is introduced to us as a friend of Abby. I might even enjoy Owen as a character if I didn’t immediately feel disgusted by the fact he actively cheats on his pregnant girlfriend Mel. Mel is a character fighting for the WLF and is a friend of Abby and for some reason everyone is okay with a pregnant woman to go on dangerous missions in a combat zone. Why?! The WLF is mentioned to have thousands of members and seemingly none of them would make a safer and more suitable candidate? Another example of a situation that is ridiculous given the context. Rounding up, the Last of Us Part II can be described as a “Beautiful, Messy Fun”. This game has serious issues around the plot which leave you very confused but the game is fundamentally enjoyable to play. I wouldn’t recommend buying it if the story is the only reason you want to play. I hope to see Naughty Dog expand on the story and tie up the loose ends of the story as it left me dieing to see it resolved.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was wary going into this game as I'd seen so much noise on social media and youtube about the plot and Naughty Dogs behaviour around release, but I was determined to ignore all that and make my own mind up. Here is the long story short - if you liked the way the first game played and looked - you'll like this one. They haven't done anything revolutionary with the mechanics etc, and the game looks amazing - the ruined seattle and santa location really immerse you into the desolate destroyed world. That being said, it did become a bit samey with just either stealthing or shooting your way through alternating hordes of people, or infected. With the odd added dog or shambler to mix it up. The story I felt a bit let down - the pacing of the game was weird, jumping around in the memories of backwards/forwards/backwards/forwards was clever...but just took me out of the immersion a bit. I like the way they brought the new groups in - the WLF, and Scars...but the newer characters that had any kind of role just felt a bit "throwaway" if that makes sense? Naughty Dog obviously set out to make a fairly gritty shocking game, and they succeeded..but at the detriment of having a good solid story which newer players to the genre could have loved. As I played on and got to the 20+ hour mark, I started to get a bit bored of the same grind and just wanted to speed through sections as fast as poss to progress the story. All in...this had huge potential, but it just didnt quite live up to my expectations (having loved the first game). I hope they do better if there is a 3rd installment. Expand

Whether you enjoy the story and characters or not, TLoU2 suffers from the inescapable feeling that it is actually two games duct-tapped together at the center and end. It makes sympathizing with and caring about most of the characters conflicting at best and - at worst - impossible for some.

Personally, I really appreciated what the game was trying to do, and I enjoyed my time with it overall. However the flaws in the writing and pacing are simply unavoidable. If you just want more of what the first game offered, TLoU2 will surely disappoint you. I'll preface by saying I was never a huge fan of the original Last if US game. It was an 8/10 for me mainly because while it's seeing felt fresh, the story beats felt too similar to other pieces of media that came out before it especially Telltale's The Walking Dead. It was a decent game but not really for me. So having said that I went into Last of Us Pt. 2 with a lower attachment to the original cast. I liked Joel as a protagonist but he was definitely a flawed individual and his selfish decision at the end influenced by past trauma of losing his daughter made him far more relatable as a character.
The last of Us Pt. 2 started us out with familiar characters but I couldn't bring myself to like them. Ellie was extremely unlikable with few enjoyable or redeeming features. I actually found myself engaging with tge new cast, and especially the other playable character significantly more though that story line had absolutely horrible pacing. When everything was coming together at the end the game went from pretty good to me, to very disappointing. Combine that with how bleak and joyless the journey was and this is not a game I'll ever play again. I don't think it's the worst game ever but it's definitely not one I'd really recommend personally.

I can see how people can find this repetitive and monotonous. HOWEVER, this game has some of the BEST action moments in any video game. The combat and gunplay is so fun and it allows the player to be creative in how they take our their enemies. The enemy AI is amazing, the way they interact with one another to find and kill you is some of the best in any action game. The action/combat sequences in this game make you feel like you’re playing an action movie. The gore, graphics, and sounds are all very realistic. The replay value is actually pretty high because there’re many different ways you can get through the combat sections. Also, the settings in the game are pretty cool too. It allows you to customize your gameplay experience in ways I’ve never experienced in a video game. Overall, this game is GOOD. It’s not the best, or even Game of the Year material. The first game is far superior (although Part II has better AI and combat). The fact that the story isn’t great hurts this game a lot because it’s a very story-driven game. You can’t control the outcomes of anything you’re merely playing through the story... and it’s not a good one. If I were to rate this game on the action and combat moments alone it would be a 10/10. However, with the weak storyline and characters this game is a solid 7/10. Expand

I am at a 7 because I find it to have very fun gameplay it improved its game play from the first game in almost every way. When I was playing the game I was wondering how any one could hate this game? But that’s when I got to the part when Joel dies from Abby which made me angry because why would they do that but I got over it and got back into the game and I was in joying myself for about 12 hours when we were at the part I thought was the climax with Abby pointing a gun at Ellie I was very invested when we cut back to Abby as a kid when I was like what the hell. But I kept playing just waiting for the game to take us back to Ellie but it was taking a very long time so I googled how long is the Abby sections to find out it’s about the same length of time as the Ellie portion. That made me want to just stop playing since I did not like the Abby character. Naughty dog wanted you to feel for her.. but I just didn’t. Eventually we get back to the part where Abby is pointing a gun at Ellie when I’m like yes now I get to kill Abby but no we are still playing as Abby trying to kill Ellie. When you leave Ellie coughing up blood on the floor. Now it’s been a bit and you play as ellie again and you have a farm house with there baby living a good life when for some reason ellie feels like she needs to go kill abby so she leaves Dina which at this point in the game you don’t care any more you just want the game to be done but whatever you go to this place where Abby is to kill her but Abby has been put in prison and is very weak so when ellie finds her she lets her down then wants to have a fight when Abby bites her fingers off and Ellie lets Abby go making it all feel pointless. Ellie goes back home to find Dina has left her and the game ends with Ellie loosing every thing leaving you unsatisfied. Anyway the half the story I did not enjoy but the other half was great the graphics are the best voice acting is perfect and I had an ok time playing this game so I give it a 7. Expand

The Last of Us Part II has been a catalyst for vitriol within the gaming community this year, and I'm wanted to give my genuine thoughts on the sequel to one of my favorite gaming experiences ever. I played through The Last of Us Part I at least 10-15 times in the last 10 years (I'm not kidding). So, is The Last of Us Part II really as bad as everyone says, or is it something else?

Starting with the story, I am conflicted. After an event drives Ellie out of Jackson, She finds herself on a path of revenge throughout the city of Seattle against multiple factions in this 20-25 hour story. You battle the militant faction known as the "WLF" or "Wolves", as well as a religious faction of zealots known as the "Seraphites" or "Scars". This is the darkest story I've ever experienced and it exhausted me and made me miserable the entire way through, not because it's bad, but because I believe it's very well written. Having said this, I can understand why MANY gamers don't like this game. This is not a happy or joyful experience. No story has ever made me reflect as much as this story has, and I have immense respect for that. This is one of the few games that only require one playthrough to satisfy your desire to play it. Though if you play through this story, I highly suggest you go into and play with an open mind.

Next, I want to discuss the gameplay. The gameplay is very similar to the previous title with some new additions to mechanics like traversal. You still go around collecting scraps and ammo while crafting gadgets to get yourself through the next combat encounter you'll inevitably find yourself in. This does make the game feel a bit repetitive on new game plus settings. There is a new grappling hook adding additional levels to the game allowing for the player to get to harder to reach spots off the beaten path. They've also added jumping and the ability to go prone which paired with combat feel really good! Sliding between cracks in walls while trying to escape a pursuing enemy dog or disappearing into a bed of reeds trying to regain stealth and gain an advantage on your adversaries feels amazing and rewarding, especially on higher difficulties. Ellie also has her switchblade, allowing an ease on resources like the crafted shiv from the first game. There are also new weapons and gadgets that add to the experience like a pipe bomb or the trap mine (which yes just splits the nail bomb into two separate weapons but adds for a greater need for saving resources). This game is also incredibly well crafted and designed. In my two-plus playthroughs of this game, I ran into no glitches, bugs, or crashes. Everything works so incredibly well and runs smoothly.

Finally, I want to talk about the visuals. This game looks incredible on the Playstation 4 Pro. The environments are absolutely gorgeous whether you're exploring the overgrown urban environment of Seattle. the snowed-in mountains of Jackson, or a few other areas you'll find yourself in. The lighting and colors of the game are completely jaw dropping. Utilizing things like film grain makes the environments and background environments look extra good. The soundtrack is also the closest thing to perfect you'll find. Gustavo Santaolalla did an amazing job creating the music for this game, though it's hard to decide if it's better than the soundtrack of the first game.

This game is not what I expected. The story is way too dark, yet still undeniably beautiful. Pairing this with the combat in between areas of story and reflection, it works well. I definitely don't think this game is a 1-2/10, but at the same time, it's definitely not a 10/10.

    Scores:
    Story: 5/10
    Gameplay: 8/10
    Graphics: 10/10
    Overall: 7/10

    Pros:
-One of the best looking games on PS4. Possibly the best
    -Zombies are intense when present
-The story was at it's best during certain Ellie flashbacks

    Cons:
    -Main story had major issues
    -New characters are largely forgettable
-Ellie/Abby parallel does not make sense

    Additional Thoughts:
I think a 7 might even be a generous score, but the graphics are undeniably amazing and there were parts of the story I still enjoyed.

That said, the main story was a bit of a mess. For the story to be successful, you had to buy into the Ellie/Abby parallel. That analogy did not work in my opinion. Ellie shows that she is generally trying to do the right thing on multiple occasions. I felt that Abby pretty much came off as a psychopath multiple times even during her section of the game. I understand they were trying to create some moral ambiguity, but Abby felt like a definite villain to me.

Joel's death can only be described as a bizarre choice by Naughty Dog. I suspected it was unlikely he would make it through the game, but to kill him so quickly and literally spit on his body? I cannot understand how anyone thinks that his death was well scripted regardless of his actions at the end of the first game. Can you imagine if this formula was applied to other games? Nathan Drake killed by a random enemy's cousin. Mario killed by a Goomba's grandson. Batman killed by henchman's neighbor. It sounds ridiculous because it is ridiculous! It didn't have to be an overblown theatrical ending, but what they went with was a bad choice.

I don't expect a perfectly realistic game since TLOU is a fictional world, but some of the choices characters make/things that happen are so ridiculous it took away from the experience. I will mention some of these at the end of my other points.

I will also say that those who think Naughty Dog is not pushing their political views into games are kidding themselves. They have been trending this direction over the course of a few games, and I do think it is starting to detract from the experience. I wouldn't say it ruins the game by any stretch, but it is pretty transparent.

The flashbacks were great. Really captured what made the first game so amazing. I also thought the ending flashback somewhat salvaged an otherwise bad story.

    Story Issues that Jumped Out:
    - Why would a pregnant doctor ever leave the safety of a camp?
    - Scars pretty much only exist to give Abby something to do during her part of the story
    - Why does Nora get to die off screen after she trashes Joel? Additionally, why is Ellie traumatized from killing her when she has killed dozens/hundreds to get there?
    - The doctor from the first game doesn't really resemble Abby's dad that much
    - Abby's backstory is way too short
    - Does WLF really just store all of their dead bodies in a tent inside their camp? Seems like an issue in a number of ways
    - How is Abby possibly fighting back at the end? She was hanging on the post long enough for her fellow prisoners to think she was dead, not to mention Ellie stabs her multiple times
    - Why would anyone fight zombies with their bare hands? Seems like Abby should know better
    - Seems extremely unlikely that Tommy would survive that gunshot wound
    - The fight with the giant Scar was cool, but no way he is fighting after having his face essentially cut in half
    - Ellie struggles to walk after being slightly stabbed by a tree, but Yara gets an arm amputated and is on a mission within a few hours

Overall, good looking game, story was okay at best. Worth playing to experience the visuals first hand, but nowhere near how great the first game was.

    1. One of the best looking games I have ever played.
    2. Animations so smooth you might think it's scripted.
    3. Incredible performances.
    4. One of the most polished games I have ever played. Everything just works! No hiccups in gameplay, character models, animations or environments.
    5. Amazing atmosphere - building. You can really feel the despair, anger, horror and hopelessness as you travel through this post-apocalyptic world.
    6. I did enjoy the newly introduced RPG element. Picking skills to learn and seeing it come to life in gameplay was always great.

    Cons:

    1. I did not care about Abby or her group of friends no matter how hard the game tried. When you have to play one half of the entire game as a character you just can't find yourself to like, the game starts to drag.
    2. The game tried too hard to portray Ellie as the villain (should have been more subtle).
    3. The stealth gameplay (although very polished) is nothing new. Toward the last third of the game, I found myself just trying to get through the fight sequences so I can get closer to the end. It's too many tossing bottles/bricks, sneaking up behind an enemy and pressing triangle. And this is coming from somebody who LOVES stealth games. There just were not enough elements to keep me interested.
    4. Did not care for the supporting cast. They were very forgettable.
    5. TLOU 2 could have benefited from shaving 3-4 hours from the run time. Some sequences felt unnecessary and were clearly only there to force us to connect with Abby more (which the game ultimately failed in).

Unfortunately, I do think TLOU 2 was an unnecessary sequel. The devs told us they would not create a sequel unless it was significant and it just fell short.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. All the companies were paid to give it a great score.

This was a huge disservice to all the characters from the first game.

Still, I actually had many moments where I smiled during all those adorable flashbacks of Ellie and Joel and wished that those moments would have been more abundant throughout the entire game. I had moments where I actually cried, more so than I’d like to admit, because I had to watch one of my favorite characters get beaten & tortured because he and tommy let there guard down at the WORST moment ever. Even though it was gut wrenching, I must admit that I somewhat commend naughty dog for being able to make me feel that kind of emotion. No I don’t agree with it and the way + time it happened and that’s my main gripe.

The story is what conflicted with me the whole damn game. I actually loved Dina as a character and the relationship her and Ellie have I could relate to because of the there age. Yet, I couldn’t stand as you go deeper into the game as Ellie (day 2 and 3 of Seattle) you watch her become this cold, dark person obsessed with revenge. Naughty dog, I understand you wanted to make this game central around revenge...but for the love of god... the amount of damn characters you killed off due to “revenge” is pathetic and I would have flipped if Abby killed Tommy as well in the theatre. Playing as Abby, honestly, I don’t know how I feel still. I didn’t despise it as much as a lot of other people did. I actually even enjoyed getting to know her crew and see that they are just trying to survive as well. Yet, I always felt this annoying “why can’t I just continue to play as Ellie...you know...the character we all believed was a huge part of the game” and that leads to my final point.

Screw the living crap out of the marketing. Screw you naughty dog for lying to all of us and to you Sony for allowing them and yourself to do that. Now I did HIGHLY enjoy the combat and all the improvements that were made to it. It felt satisfying, brutal, and rewarding especially when sniping people with your bow. Presentation was amazing. I loved yara and lev and cheered for them to survive as long as possible. Honestly there were points I really loved the story and some of its wholesome moments. It’s just there are holes, glaring holes that smack you in the face and make you ask why.

Many people may ask why I even gave it a 7 due to the political crap it pushed and to that, I honestly can only say I tried being as open as possible. I also was mixed on the story, even though I mainly listed negatives as I feel they need to be known, so it also had that. This is no where near the original, however, as I played that game for over 100+ hours and never got sick of it. Naughty dog, if you for some reason make a third one, take some advice from us fans that loved the first game and wanted this one to succeed so badly. Don’t load your game with politically motivated crap and maybe, just maybe, don’t kill off one of the best characters a company has ever made. (Yes I know that mean killing of Ellie at that point since they already messed up with Joel and then I’d just be laughing at that point because I’d join in dumping a fat zero on the game).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. the last of us part 2 is a great game. With beautifully detailed graphics as expected from a Naughty Dog game. The combat and exploration are amazing as well. But it can be pretty old over time making the experience too easy since the game has a lot of salvage to find and upgrades with ease. The biggest complaint that is on everyone's mind is the story. It is written well but told in the wrong way. Making people play as a random girl at beginning to kill off a fan favorite character isn't always a good way to debut. Especially since that character growth in the first game felt completely pointless since he didn't felt like the character from the first game. Naughty Dog has shown that they are being run by amateurs who are still learning to become incredible again. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. On thinking back on the story in the weeks after slowly savoring it, it's too easy to praise the idea of the story while forgetting how it unfolded. It is easy to remember the warmth and allure of wintertime Jackson, Dina and Ellie's friendship, the moving sorrow of the flashbacks, Ellie's grief and trauma, and the poignant look into the destructive nature of revenge. I have thought on that moral lesson, that revenge prevents loved ones from growing old together and sharing experiences over many years of life.

However, thinking back on the experience of the story weeks after playing it brings one danger: my imagination will make those good qualities I listed in the last paragraph seem better, more fleshed out, or more subtle than they actually were while playing through. So, while my idea of the story (or my memory of it) will dwell in the simple life of wintertime Jackson, remember Ellie's friendships, the sorrow of the flashbacks, and Ellie's grief and trauma, those aspects were in reality glossed over. In retrospect, my memory might praise the moral lesson on revenge by making it seem as if it were more subtle than it actually was, but the message was not subtle: it required half the length of the game, and that half tearing our attention away from the engrossing emotional life of Ellie, who is perhaps the most beloved character of the PS3/4 era.

Therefore, I gave a 7 for the fact that the game teases the player with the allure of wintertime Jackson and the promise of being with Ellie through the stages of her grief and trauma, but instead, rushes past these aspects. We had no glimpse whatsoever into the progression of Ellie's grief during her and Dina's cross country journey to Washington. Such a journey, which is the allure of the TLOU world, was happily skipped; not one moment of that journey was shown, which disoriented me. For a game about the cycle of revenge, glossing over the early stages of grief, which could've at least had one dedicated section in say Idaho in the cross country trip, was a huge missed beat. How can I align myself with Ellie when she had a 3-4 month time skip to process her grief, whereas I had but a few minutes? Being enslaved to their narrow theme of the degrading nature of revenge, the game puts the player in a cannon, so to speak, while we are still enjoying our winter patrol and rushes to shoot us past everything between that section and Ellie's confrontation with Abby in Seattle.

By putting Ellie's burning desire for revenge front and center for most of the game, we don't get to explore other aspects of her inner, emotional life, which would give more weight to her destructive revenge. Because we don't get to dwell in a segment showing her simple life in Jackson (going to the sledding resort or lake with her friends for example), we don't fully appreciate what she gives up in her revenge mission. Because we don't see enough glimpses of Ellie's emotional turmoil between Joel's death and Seattle, we aren't made to appreciate the fire behind her revenge. Those are left to the imagination. And when TLOU2 teases us with the greatness of their visual and emotional fidelity in their characters, I can't help but feel disappointed that those moments are left to my imagination rather than fleshed out with cutscenes and playable sections. Leaving what I think are crucial elements to Ellie's development to the imagination is worthy of a 7 no matter how good the journal entries are. Relegating Jackson life and the cross country to journal entries was a big slap in the face.

Lastly, Abby's section would've worked as a shorter segment not only to spare time for Ellie's emotional development early on, but also to enhance the moral lesson of the story by being more subtle. Any work that is didactic to whatever degree cannot hide its didactic nature from the audience. Making the player play 10 hours as Abby, introducing and focusing on five of her friends throughout, not only weakens the moral lesson by being overt, but takes away from the intimacy that made TLOU1 great. That sense of intimacy, which makes the world seem bigger, scarier, and relationships cozier, is watered down when there are too many characters added. Not to mention that most of that 10 hours is spent trudging through some of the most dense shoot-em-up sections in game, which add no depth to her story at all.

TLOU2 teased at aspects of Ellie's inner life that should've been explored, but never did. Relegating important aspects of Ellie's emotional world to journal entries (for Jackson life and the cross country journey) is disappointing. The time spent trying to flesh out Abby's five friends could've been used to delve more into Ellie's emotional development. Here's a quote from the Pali Canon to sum up my views on spreading the story thin across too many characters in a game founded on intimacy:

    One alone is like Brahma,
    two, like devas,
    three, like a village,
    more than that:
    a hullabaloo.

But I can't say that Ebby has enough motivation. I can't say that Joel got what he deserved.

The game has a perfect visual style, music, gameplay. But it's so long. And the story is very controversial.

It is by no means a terrible game but it obviously did not meet the expectations. Great visuals with character animation, but very avreage when it comes to surroundings (plants look unrealistic, too static and fake). The story is its weakest point. Makes no sense

Great game brought down by a toxic community. The graphics are great and the gameplay is absolutely amazing.

For what games with open world play The Last of Us Part 2 fails when compared to a game like Red Dead Redemption. Being a The Last of Us fan I enjoyed the game, just expected more than a “remake” feel to it, when it’s on the PS4!

Naughty Dog did a great job with the graphics, but the plot isn't very well thought out, in some moments you want to scream:"What the hell is this?!". But after a certain amount of time, most of these things really changed for the better. I enjoyed the changes that happen after about half of the game, and I certainly didnt expect that I would feel the way I did for the new and old characters...
Some major downsides were that levels felt repetitive/too linear, even though I could usually feel/tell that the devs tried hard to make it feel the opposite. Enemies/combat outdated, were only a few moments were a boss fight was interesting and tough. I loved how much you can customize the settings though, that really helped some aspects of combat!
I feel like the criticism of the story shouldnt be something that keeps anyone else from playing the game. Even though I wish the game could have had a faster pace in the beginning, I enjoyed the twists in the plot and the characters and I was surprised in a good way about this.

The game for me is very good, not amazing or excellent but calling it anything less is just lazy. I had a fantastic experience playing this game and I would FIRMLY recommend it to anyone. The only element I didn't enjoy was Abby, but not for the reason most people dislike Abby. I enjoyed the story, Lev and Yara were genuinely interesting characters, but forcing the player to play against Ellie and the end was just cruel and whatever goal the developers had in mind, they missed it in my opinion.
Score, gameplay, acting performances, mechanics - all nearly perfect and had the game at a 9/10 for me. First 10 hours of the game with Ellie was incredible, but the Abby story was always going to fall short. The theatre encounter between Ellie and Abby was just abandoned for 10 hours and gave the player this deep sense of dread when we returned.

To conclude, if depression and emptiness was the mood the Devs were shooting for, they genuinely have achieved it. I just think it's sad we couldn't playmoree of what we fell in love with, Joel and Ellie. The flashbacks on Ellie's side were gripping and some of the best parts of the game. The Abby ones were completely non-compelling. Looking forward to a DLC hopefully and eventually the third and fhopefully final chapter in what will always be an incredible series.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
