So when you already kill the main character of the first game in the first 2h of the game, that's really hard to take in. I just want to be clear on something: I don't have a problem with Joel dying, but I have a problem with how it was executed. It was just so unrealistic and stupid and something Joel & Tommy never would have done. That really put a damper on me liking the game. The problem in itself is that ND lied about the game in the trailers. Nothing was indicating Joel was dying in the first couple of hours and I'm gonna guess 90 % would have wanted a story/journey with Joel and Ellie again. The positive things about this game is of course the graphics, amazing AI and great combat. But what does that do when after 2 hours of the game and u don't feel engaged in the story anymore? So I did play it, but I never really enjoyed it. The fact that you have to play as Joel's killer in half the game also made me seriously consider putting the controller down. This is ND weakest game to date and they have to seriously do something special to hook me the way they have done before as I won't really trust what they will put in the trailers of their next game, whatever that is.

I heard that when the first game was about Love, this was themed around hate, so this was something that I thought about a lot during my playtime. It is hard to get someone to explore negative emotions and come out feeling good, and I feel that a lot of that this game was getting at was that death is painful to deal with, we don't all go out in meaningful ways.

I felt that there was a bit of a gameplay lull in the middle similar to Alien: Isolation where after you get powerful and reach a climactic point, everything resets to the new character which is a little unsatisfying.

Gameplay-wise, I felt that the rarer infected functioned a lot better and were more interesting than the first game and the newer variants were interesting. A big issue for me in the first one was simplistic, repeating puzzles. I feel that this game had some more interesting and original mechanics for puzzles which I appreciated. I wasn't as big a fan of the brute type human enemies or the chase scene, horse escape that felt a little too much like Uncharted for me.

I think the takeaway message is loss sucks but it's something we have to deal with in life, exploring the emotions and the way that hate destroys so much around us with no real catharsis is a bold move, and I did feel myself getting emotionally invested.

Overall I think that the game might have been too long to make it's a point well, but I advise people to see it through to the end. If you are at all on the fence, I suggest waiting for a price drop.

The directors lost sight of what made the first game so good and I think the focus should have remained our connection with the characters. ND tried to do too much in one game and because of that, it's not landed as well as it could have.

There's a big boss battle here that should be explored and expanded if a third installment is introduced. The cordycep zombies mutation gives great opportunity to create great massive enemies. The issues with this game lies in the story. This is spoiler free. I am a big fan of TLOU. This next installment seems to be at war with itself between the story it's trying to tell and the gameplay. A stealth/shooter game is not the best way to tell this story. This story actually works much better as a movie than it does a game. This story is about revenge/trauma/ PTSD/ guilt/ and forgiveness. That's a very hard thing to pull off when you are killing countless enemies for entertainment. What you have is a story not matching the avenue that is being used to tell it. There is also too many cut scenes and flashbacks used. It leaves the gamer holding the remote doing nothing and I always advice against it. The first game added a significant portion of it's narrative to the actual gameplay it made it more entertaining. But sometimes, when you make choices and write yourself in a corner you have to use flashbacks to get yourself out. Flashbacks are a very weak narrative tool and must be used wisely. This game went too hard at this. This is why the story was average at best which hurts a narrative game's replayability to a certain degree. The gameplay is tense, yes there's a form of repetitiveness from it but there's only so much you can do inside the world that was built. It feels tense throughout especially at harder difficulties. Overall, I enjoyed playing this game. This is not 10/10 game of the year material reviewers are saying. It's also not the trash people are claiming it to be because they are mad at the story's direction. It's a solid 7 out of 10 that will inevitably be in the running for game of the year and inevitably lose. From a story standpoint it's weaker than it's predecessor. Most everything else is an improvement. Graphics: 10

The second half of the game introduces the player to a brand new arsenal of interesting weapons that heavily improved combat in a much-needed way.

The realistic world sounds and deep compelling soundtrack really pulls the player into this brutal and dark experience.

Visually and audibly, the game is a big step-up from its predecessor.

The new supporting characters are very likeable but go through little development from start to finish. Some are likeable, while others are boring and uninteresting.

The story fell flat at times, and I felt no connection to the protagonist in the second half of the game. At times I would rather purposely lose to my enemies, rather than putting up a fight. Not a feeling a player should ever experience. The ending was great in my opinion but taught the protagonist a lesson the player had learned long before that point. The bad execution pulls the story from being great to good in my eyes.

I really want to give the game a positive 9/10, but the poor executed story and characters leave me with a mixed 7/10 review.

characters: Bad. The only interesting ones were constructed on the previous game, except for Dina, wich I found cool and a great partner,

story: It was a good idea, but was poorly executed. Abbys gameplay is too long and didnt make it easy to emphazise with her. I find okey that ellie didn´t killed her at the end, but she could have reached the same conclusion at her home. I find really forced the ending and how Ellie losted everything. It is as ND tried to make it sad on purpose, without thinking if it would make sense. I think inclusion wasn´t a problem, but hurts me that ND uses their best-seller to shout how tolerant and good they are. Whatever I liked Dinellie and find them as a good couple so ok

Conclusion: The expectatives were too high, and I am sure whatever they made there would be discontent fans. it was a good game, but OF COURSE is not the masterpiece everybody is talking about. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 is a good game. It is not as good as part one, but it still has amazing moments. Yes, there are plot inconsistencies. And yes, it is controversial in its design choices and way of storytelling. But it is not as bad as early user scores seem to indicate.

If you are as lost as me in the whole controversy, just wait until the price drops and then make up your own mind. Just don't believe the hate - you could miss out on something very good here.

Overall, I must give Naughty Dog kudos for the fact that they tried to make the player see the opposite site of the generally accepted game mechanic of killing random people repeatedly, never asking if it’s necessary or justified.
For almost everybody else in the game, Joel and Ellie are the villains, first robbing humanity of a cure, then killing innocent people for their selfish reasons.

The game could have been an outstanding example of showing how morality is a matter of perspective by placing two equally likable characters against each other, leaving the player in an empathy catch 22. But certain character design choices prevented that from happening.

In the end the game is not consequent in following it's own relentless standards. The ending feels surprisingly ineffectual. It should have just gone all in, leaving the character and player alone with nothing but grief and emptiness. But it’s hard to build another sequel on that, I suppose.

If you are into big production great-looking, plot-driven games, you shouldn't miss this one.
But you should also know: if you are looking for a realistic stealth shooter or pioneering inventions in story telling – this is not it.

Although sad, it made sense in a way. If I was making the game myself would I have killed him off this early or at all? No, but it didn't ruin the game for me. I enjoyed about 75% of this game, the game-play is special, I would be lying if I said I enjoyed the ending. I would be lying if I said I didn't think they added an underlying message which I felt was unnecessary, maybe this doesn't go for everyone but I'm completely comfortable with characters within a game being of whatever sexual preference, whatever gender they want, I just want a good story and it felt unnecessary to go through Lev's whole journey to becoming trans (just my opinion). The last couple of hours of this game made me forget how much I enjoyed a whole lot of it, Joel's death was sad but I feel like it could very much be justified for his actions at the end of the first Last of Us. Good, not great. Expand

Don't make a game about vengeance and violence if you're going to skip the part trauma part. In interviews that surfaced after the release of the game Neil mentioned removing some scenes that explored Ellie's PTSD because "it didn't fit into the flow of the game" and that's honestly idiotic. The game has 28h+, it's split in two halves and it has lots of flashbacks. There was enough time to do character development right. If you think showing trauma ruins the rhythm of your game then you shouldn't tell these kinds of stories @Neil.

Not exploring Ellie's trauma and doubts better made this a very tone deaf game. So she's fine murdering dozens of people who have nothing to do with her quest for revenge and only struggles with the ones that do? This should've been explored way better. There were some entries in her journal that somewhat tapped into that, but not near enough. This is honestly something that should've been "show not tell".

Anyways, even with all those problems it's still fun to play and that's honestly what I look for in games. I've played and enjoyed games that have worse stories.

My only issue about the story is how Joel is played out as some horrible man who selfishly took Abby's dad and prevented the potential for a vaccine. A man who, selfish or not, prevented the fireflies from killing Ellie without her consent. Yeah she's mad because she would've sacrificed herself for the cause, but that doesn't change the fact that they had decided her life for her. What's the point of saving humanity if humanity doesn't care about you? No say in the matter regarding your own life. No last words. No farewells to the guy who just went through hell to get her there. And there's Ellie. A girl who tried so hard to build a relationship with Joel despite his efforts to keep it strictly professional. She slowly won him over. Even ran off and made a huge scene when Joel got Tommy to agree to take her. Made him guilty that he was abandoning her and didn't care. Refused his offer to turn around. Said they could go wherever he wanted afterwards. Showed no signs of wanting to die. She won his heart, someone was going to just end her life without any say, and she hates him for it? That's brutal. I understand Abby's anger because it was her father, but she gave her blessing to her dad when he couldn't answer the question if he could decide that for his own daughter. This is a story justifying their revenge and trying to convince you that they're better. All while discrediting the actual good that Joel did. If their actions are justified because Ellie would've agreed, why couldn't they wait one damn day to sit down with Joel and Ellie to discuss this? You know, instead of deciding her fate like it's ok because it's for the "greater good" Based off the responses from the new Abby fans, this game has taught me that if an outbreak like this ever happened and you find out you're immune, don't tell anyone if you want to live. Too many people are ok with killing you without say to save their own life. Expand

The last of us intenta.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After playing the The Last of Us Part 2 for 11 hours, my thoughts...

Gameplay graphics, physics, cinematics are beautiful. This is easily one of best looking PS4 games ever. Better than God of War, Marvel Spider-Man, etc.

This game has larger, open, more explorable environments. This is where the game shines. Deviating from the main path to explore another route or building proved quite thrilling at times. They weren't kidding when they said you'd need a horse to get around sometimes.

The musical soundtrack is pretty dull except when you run or encounter enemies. The gameplay feels exactly like its predecessor. However, this game is more refined and polished. Being able to dodge and go prone proves invaluable in enemy encounters.

The dialogue and voice acting is superb. Some of the best I have ever seen since the Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2. I will acknowledge this game is not fun to play. It's moody, depressing, and devoid of any jubilant emotions. It can be rather boring. I'd advise watching comedy movie after playing this because you'll likely be feeling down.

I will say this game has more intense enemy encounters than it's predecessor. Regarding the leaks, if you have already spoiled yourself then yes everything you heard or seen is true. That's all I say.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok, so let's get this right. the graphics are superb. possibly the best atm and the gameplay is quite good and i honestly have no idea what else they could add. but there is a reason i did not give it a 10, and for which no one has given it a 10, and that reason is divided in a few specific points. 1) how brutal Joel's death was. i honestly felt almost as Ellie with the zumbing ears and all. it hit us all hard and all got enraged, which was the objective, this did not cause a lower score in my review though. 2) we all were quite immersed in the story, following Ellie's (and our) quest for revenge, when suddenly they clash with Abby and GD BOOM, we play as Abby, the character we hate the most. i get the point, we all did. Abby wanted to get revenge in the first place, but it did not make Joel deserving of such a tormentous death, more so when he and Tommy had just saved her. She killed our most beloved character in a horrible way. and then we are forced to play as her. this was the first game that instead of making me feel good and have fun, made me feel angry while playing it, and not angry at a scene or a bug, but at the game's design itself, because i had to play as someone i hated and no, i never grew fond of her, i simply kept hating her more and more. before being forced to play as Abby, the game had a 10/10 to me. 3) The difference on difficulty between playing as Ellie and Abby, when we start playing as Abby, we are already pissed, but what also pissed me off was the fact that Abby's journey was so much harder, making Ellie's feel like an introduction or tutorial. 4)The story, was not the best i can't lie. it had more than a friggin way to be so much better and intense. the insight onto Abby was completely unnecesary, and the ending, made it all look absurd. but honestly what i hated the most was playing as Abby. it was stupid and unnecesary, like at all. if a part 3 is coming, i doubt i'll play it. cause i don't see Ellie being there, i see Abby, and like Ellie, i only remember Joel's death when looking at her. playing as Tommy would have been so much better instead of her. so the game's great, until they make you play as Abby, force you to beat the **** out of your second most beloved character and then, when you have the chance to finally get revenge on her, let her live, leaving all the previous events as worthless. This game does a great job making you hate a character and then making you hate the game itself. other than that, the game is good and at least deserves to be played. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics are the best of its kind. Gameplay is a little bit repetitive. It is still very fun to play. But the story and the way game serves the story is below expectations. First you kill the main character of the first game, then at the very important part of the game you put a 6-10 hours long flashbacks. It gets boring after a short amount of time.

Finally flashbacks are over. We're moving forward. Ellie makes a desicion that makes no sense and goes after Abby. Finds and tries to kill her with a knife when she is very weak already. At the very end she changes her mind and let Abby go. So why did she made this desicion from the start? It doesn't make sense.

If this was not a Last of Us game, I still wouldn't like the story. Basically there is an originally 30 minutes long story but they serve you this story for 20 hours by mashing it up with wonderful graphics and gameplay.

The inclusion of some subjects politically correct is not a problem, are well treated, and relatively necessary at this point of the human history, for me there is no a problem. This game is a good send off for the PlayStation 4 (graphically speaking). They’re are so many small details in the game that are so good but I couldn’t possibly list them all because nobody has time for that... The story didn’t stick with me as hard as the first game did. I felt like the pacing was off, and that the story might have benefited from being told in a different chronological order. However I respect the decision that the writers made and know it is meant to be more than a revenge story. With that being said, the game is almost too long, and it almost becomes a chore to play when getting towards the end because it has been drawn out so much. Lastly the gameplay can get a bit monotonous and stale, combat is fundamentally the same as the 1st game, and upgrading weapons is not as rewarding/fun as the first game.

Overall this game is pretty good. A ton of work went into the game and it shows. I understand the frustration behind certain aspects of the story (and those certain events pissed me off as well) but overall it is still a quality game. The game does get unnecessary hate and it is by no means a 0/10 game, but I wouldn’t say it is a perfect 10/10 either. If you’re on the fence about buying this game, I would wait for it to go on sale or something (or wait for the inevitable remastered ps5 version of the game).

At the start they kill joel in the most unheroic way they could and he deserve more then that.
I think thatthe story was about revenge but why ellie needs to kill everyone exept for the one who killed joel only because joel would not want it.
Anyway... the game was not as the players expected him to be and the end was the worse ending it could ever been.
Graphics and gameplay are great and even the story is not bad but there are some places that the story makes you want to die.
The game is good if you loved tlou part 1 but i will recommend just do not end the game it will be alot better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To start on a positive note, The Last Of Us Part II is a technical masterpiece. From Graphics to sound, lighting, level design, music and art direction, every technical aspect of this game is absolutely stunning and the developers at Naughty Dog have once again raised the benchmark for what other developers strive to achieve.

I've sat on my feelings about this game for some time after completing it as I wanted to digest just how conflicted I originally felt once the credits rolled. I admire the bold choices made for the story and liked the fact that it didn't strive to simply replicate beats from the first game, however, I didn't find many moments that were as profound or meaningful to the abundance that the first game achieved. The closest that comes to this, sadly, are the flashback sequences between Joel and Ellie. The one and only moment that really stuck with me was the space module sequence in the museum.

I think I've boiled the issues I had down to two major issues. The direction of its structure/pacing and character development.

I thoroughly enjoyed Dina and Ellie's earlier interaction in the game and there was a certain warmth to her chemistry with Ellie. There are several moments, however, where a new character started to grow on me and was immediately ripped away far too soon. Just as we start to connect with Jesse, he is swiftly taken away without any sense of impact to Ellie or Dina throughout the later game. I understand that it is supposed to reflect the bleakness of that world, but I lacked any lasting emotion because I hadn't spent long enough with him, nor did his death seem to really impact the other characters around him later down the line. I also didn't ever really connect with the extended WLF crew because of the clunky back and forth structure in which it chose to tell its story.

With regards to the structure, I felt as though the game missed a great opportunity to explore Abby's character in a way that would allow us to sympathise with her prior to her act of revenge. I would have liked to have seen her interact with Joel more after having been saved by him, hesitant and conflicted about her quest for revenge. Allow the tension to build as we as the audience learn about her reasons through flashback while simultaneously playing her in the present, wondering whether or not she will make that final decision as she spends more time with Joel and Ellie. I feel this would have been a great first half of the game and then once she finally succumbs to exacting her revenge, then we take over as Ellie and head to Seattle in the second half (accompanied by the same Joel and Ellie flashbacks, but this time towards the end of the story).

I ultimately found the length of the game to be too long for the message it was trying to convey. I'm sure the intention was to make us feel as exhausted and emotionally drained about life in this world, but I didn't need 25 hours to get there. It feels as though the game is aiming for a very niche audience because on one end of the spectrum, you have people who are somewhat close-minded and outright refuse to peel back the curtain of Abby's character.

On the other hand, you have people who are open to Abby's motivations from the very beginning. I myself felt zero hatred towards her actions and only sadness during the entire scene. I immediately thought, 'I'm sure she had her reasons,' given Joel's darker past during the apocalypse. The only issue I could see is that because of the extent of her brutality, she almost becomes irredeemable for the audience from the onset, but it was interesting to observe her cope with the other side of revenge (paralleled with Ellie's story leading up to revenge). What you have left is an audience of people who are open, but somehow aren’t already aware that the world isn't full of heroes and villains, that everyone is in a morally grey area, that revenge is a costly and unrewarding act and that there are two sides to every story. I just don't think it shines as much new light as it thinks it does on these themes. The first game's story was never anything new, but what made it a masterpiece was the relationship and complexity of its characters. I loved Joel not in spite of, but because of his flaws. His decision and motivations felt earned and honest. While the emotional trauma of his death had a significant impact on Ellie, I found her journey for revenge almost too blind to be believable and so rather than flaws, I saw them as a lack of intelligence that was already established in the first game.

Whether I would tread back into it as often as I did the first game, I don't know... Even though it didn't completely stick the landing for me, it did open an interesting discussion amongst fans and I’m glad to have experienced it.

About new game - it is pretty good. Main problem of it is the fact that it was hyped so hard that if it is not perfect than it is ruined for many people and it is pretty far from perfect.
Graphics and details in this game really gorgeous. Facial animation of characters is great and voice acting - no matter what you think about story you will believe actors at the very least. Sound design is awesome too - killing sounds are so real it is horrifying and ambient is keeping you focused and in suspense. Gameplay i liked too - i enjoy stealth and on survival you really have to scavenge and be stealthy - though it is not so innovative as it was in first game, it is basically polished version of it with some new mechanics. Violence in this game - for better or worse - is over the top. I actually liked that part because postapocalyptic world should be violent but for some people it can be too much. Only problem with gameplay part for me was that it is really drags. It is simply too long and (at least on survival) no matter how i liked it i got tired of it .
Now to story - it is decent. The main fault of it that it is trying too hard to push author's idea into your head. That is why sometimes story feels too far-fetched. Story in good movie or game should be first of all immersive - you have to believe in what is happening in it, believe in characters' actions, but here i didn't believe in their motivation at all. Everything else - sound, graphics, acting, etc - very immersive, but main caharacters are hollow and their actions are pretty stupid sometimes. It is especially wierd because characters were actually best part of TLOU 1. Story itself is just a vengeance story nothing more nothing less. In the end story is worst part of this game - most part of it actually feels like a filler made to fill gaps in long gameplay and to push the main idea that vengeance is bad.
All in all it is pretty good game - if you like survival, postapocalypse, great physics, graphics and sound you will have lots of fun. If you are going for the story and characters it is probably not the best choice.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Rating this a 1 or a 10 is disingenuous. The truth lies somewhere in between. The gameplay, visuals, and sound are all top notch. TLOU II is not a terrible game, but its story (a huge selling point in Naughty Dog games) is underwhelming and, for many people, upsetting. This huge catch bumps TLOU II down to just average. Pacing issues mean the story drags and leaves the player hanging on for something else of substance to happen. The death of the previous game's primary protagonist so early in the game sours what could be a genuinely interesting narrative twist for a video game. Plot points that should be at the end of the game are at the beginning. The game jumps timelines a lot and introduces many new characters, at a steady clip, which may leave some people trying to untangle who is who. In the end, TLOU II is neither as good or bad as some would have you believe. It rests somewhere in the middle. I'd give it a recommend if you value gameplay over story, but if you value story you're better off waiting for this on sale. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Characters are extremely unlikeable too and I just couldn't develop any kind of bond with them. That said , it's a gorgeous looking game - probably best looking I've seen. Voice acting is spot on and gameplay generally satisfying, although as the game progressed, it started to get a little repetitive. It mostly consists of getting to an area, clearing it of enemies or sneaking past and repeating this process. It's still fun, you can take them out silently, go guns blazing or set up traps.
This game is not a masterpiece, it's also not a total garbage as most user scores would have you believe - it's just worse then part one and that is the problem.

The mishandling of a character to put the spotlight on a forced agenda character or characters is a travesty and shame that we cant play as the character we really wanted to play with. The story pissed me off of the way a character was handled. The director just wanted a pat on the back from a small percentage of players. ________
I really want to rate this game higher.. The game is incredibly atmospheric and customizable for how you want to play it - have a true survival experience or breeze through the game as if it was nothing. a ton of accessibility options, the best I've seen to date. Lots of eye candy. Definitely for mature audiences only.

    The good:
    ________
Gameplay felt really good, I liked the crafting and upgrade system and the fact that you had to explore to get resources and improve your skill tree. Several collectibles, which, I will give you points for ingame unlocks of some artwork and concept art along with some behind the scenes insights. Some of the puzzle mechanics were really nice, rope puzzles made me feel a little creative. and combat felt tactical and stealthy. There are times when it does give you a fair amount of action gunplay to change the pace, but I felt like it was almost my choice of how to approach each step. Cut scenes are skipabble and are completely seamless between each encounter/puzzle and gives you complete immersion while telling the story.

    The critique:
    _________
I really wish we had gotten an ending where we could have just somehow sided with one or the other character getting their sweet revenge. I thought the story was okay, after reading many reviews from other players and fans of the original, I understand their unhappiness with some of the character's actions. Its a game thats meant to shock your system as much as possible and prove a point. Its cool to have 2 completely different, badass girl characters and very different perspectives. I wish you could replay the game just from one or the other's characters perspective, and have an "alternate" ending where you actually go through with the revenge kill at the end. My first impressions of the game were actually very positive, I couldn't put the controller down, it was captivating. I would say that some of the story/ending felt a bit dragged towards the end or maybe a little incomplete even. They really really tried to one up on their previous TLOU title and they *almost* made it. Unfortunately, the way the game ended was a complete downer after making you go through a large amount of adrenaline-packed gameplay. It has some replay value, so there's that, too.

If you haven't played the original, this game will definitely blow you away.

It had a good point of view of new characters like Abby, But people don't like her too much and that's a problem. Some characters like Jesse doesn't seem to be important to Ellie, his history isn't too deep. Finally, the end is not good. Ellie seems to be the antagonist, after all she was blinded by her anger and she needed to kill Abby to show us her importance in the history. That was a big change for Ellie. I personally couldn’t care less about any new character introduced. It just didn’t land well for me. The parts where you play as Ellie? 10/10. But then there’s this overlong “please love this character” section that just wasn’t good. From Owen, to Mel, to Lev, to Manny. There was this sad desperation in the writing to try to make the player want to sympathize with Abby, they even tried to copy the giraffe scene from the first. Not once...but twice! First with a zebra, Abby and her father have a moment, then with a seal, Abby and Owen have a moment. It’s more arrogance than ambitious for a writer to think they can force or experiment with a players emotions to try to get sympathy for Abbys actions. They even try to make you care about killing Alice. It was a decision that fell flat with me, when all of abbys friends died, I was more indifferent than sad. The character of Ishmael in the original, mind you he’s never physically in the game, I cared about more than anyone associated with Abby. Expand

First, the things that I liked:

    1. I loved the visuals and graphics. It's definitely the best looking game on the PS4, along with U4, RDR2, and TLOU1.

    2. I loved the entirety of Ellie's part of the game. I could honestly play as Ellie for hours and never be bored. I think she's definitely my favorite character.

    3. I liked that all the characters have motivations, are morally grey, and have motives behind their actions. That is something I've always liked and I'm glad ND decided to do that to their characters.

    4. The actual gameplay, especially the combat and the stealth, seem improved from the first game.

    5. I actually liked a lot of the new characters, especially Ellie's group. Not so much Abby's group except for Owen.

    6. I actually loved the final fight between Ellie and Abby and liked the ending. I'm ok with Ellie deciding not to kill Abby even though I felt like Abby should have died.

    7. The worldbuilding was an added bonus I didn't expect. It felt very Fallout-y, which is a good thing.

With that said, there are quite a few negatives that also brings this game down significantly:

    1. I don't buy Joel's actions in the prologue. I find it odd that Joel and Tommy were so willing to give up their names to a stranger even if they were trying to help her. They had to have known that people were coming after him to try and kill him, so I don't know why Tommy and Joel didn't have aliases for strangers that they don't know. Especially since both Tommy and Joel know what Joel did in the first game.

    2. Abby isn't a bad character, I empathized with her and understood where she came from and why she did certain things, but I didn't really enjoy playing as Abby. So it was quite a chore for me to play as Abby for 10-12 hours straight. I much preferred Ellie, and I found it a strange decision to have all the Ellie Days first, then switch to Abby for essentially the rest of the game.

    3. I hated fighting Ellie as Abby. I guess it's mainly because I really like Ellie and I think she's a much better person than Abby is so it was frustrating playing as the person I thought was morally worse than Ellie and trying to kill them.

    4. While Lev isn't a bad character, I honestly didn't understand why the entire Abby storyline revolved around him and Yara. I found it an odd writing decision to not even mention Ellie at all during Abby's storyline, or at the very least, not mention that a "trespasser" is causing trouble in the WLF portions of the city and they don't know who or what it is. The only time we see Ellie is at the theater when Abby confronts them.

    5. Other than Owen and maybe Lev I didn't really like any of the characters in Abby's side.

    6. There were some serious pacing issues with Abby's part of the story, which I felt dragged for a while with no real plot progression to the main storyline.

    7. Not having a moment where Abby comes to realize that killing Joel wasn't worth it, especially after helping out Lev and Yara, was a missed opportunity and an odd writing choice. Especially since we could have empathized with Abby even more if she came to realize in the end that killing Joel wasn't worth it.

    8. I had quite a few glitchy moments.

I think I'm being generous with a 7/10. Its a fun game for the first half, but playing as Abby for 10-12 straight hours is quite a chore and messed with the pacing of the game. It is a fun and entertaining game though with great visuals and gameplay. So I think a 7 is appropriate here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay and design is stellar, with some of the most detailed mechanics and concepts I have seen for a game. There are so many small but extremely detailed systems running in this game that will blow you away once you realize they are there. However, the actual core mechanics of combat, exploration, and resource management do not remain fun for the entire course of the game and start going stale by the end.

The game has some serious pacing issues, by the 2/3rds mark or so you are going to be pretty bored and sick of the game. The gameplay does not stay fresh and the story fails to keep you interested due to poor layout.

I strongly disagree with all of the people that are jumping to one extreme or the other over this game. Everyone seems to want to call it a 10 or a 0. When it hardly deserves either of those scores. Issues with characters derive not from them being out of character, but the game not showing the time and actions that drove characters to think or act the way they do, alienating the player. The way characters act IS logical, but it is not conveyed correctly to the player.

The game also does a terrible job making you CARE about characters that it wants you to. It takes too long to build on some, and stops bothering to build up others. Characters you are just starting to care about will suddenly be dropped from the story for 10+ hours, show back up at the end and suddenly you are supposed to still care about them in all of this. Meanwhile, people you have barely seen at all will suddenly be in a position or situation you are MEANT to empathize with when at best you MIGHT be able to sympathize.

To conclude, the story was a GREAT idea with terrible execution that alienates people in a series that relied heavily on its story, and the gameplay grows too stale to keep people entertained over this long and overplayed plot. Also, the devs lied about several things certain people had concerns over like dog killing. Which doesn't matter to me, but the fact that they lied to the people really pisses me off.

First off, I can't understand why so many Critics gave The Last of Us: Part II a 100 Rating... Nothing about the game could be improved, noting at all? its just so perfect? I find that hard to believe. Same goes with all of the 0 ratings from the User Reviews. Nothing could be worse?

    Graphics 10/10
I think it was absolutely great, there was several times where I stopped just to take in the scenery. Its not often I find myself to just stop and enjoy something visual in a game.

    Mechanics 8/10
I enjoyed being able to upgrade your weapons, traits, and then crafting useful tools to assist you with the enemies. Breaking glass to get into a room that is locked. Crawling on the ground to get to different places even to hide sometimes. What i didn't like was, every encounter was like TAP SQUARE to get out of a situation. About 1/3 into the game I found my self hitting square before it was even promoted to do so. I wished it was switched up with other buttons or actions. The AI, I feel could have been a bit better.

    Story 6/10
    So much to say.

I never seen any of the leaks, and still haven't, but I had a feeling the story would revolve around Ellie getting revenge for the death of Joel. The reveal trailer had Joel coming from a white light type background and then when it was confirmed by Neil Druckmann that Ellie was the "only playable character." So it didn't surprise me that Joel was killed. The way Joel is murdered, it felt like Ellie deserves to get revenge. All though she had been resenting to Joel for two years before. That is when she learns what really happened at the end of the first game.

The slap to the face came after knowing what has happened your forced to play as Abby, the one that kills Joel. At that point I wanted to stop playing because I simply did not care about her story or her background. After a while I did understand why she wanted killed Joel, but not enough for me to care or overlook it. I found dying as Abby to be satisfying, especially when as Abby you have to fight Ellie. The first several "attempts" I walked out in the open just to let Ellie kill Abby.
From a story telling perspective your player base shouldn't want to die playing as one of the main characters. It was such a disconnect for me from the game. I think it would have been better to tell most of the story (other than the ending) in a different order, such as building Abby's character before she kills Joel.

The ending was mostly a waste in my opinion. After Abby lets Ellie live for a second time only because a supporting character that you save as Abby is there. She goes off to live on the farm with Dina (which you find out is pregnant early on in your search for Abby) and her baby. At least ten months have passed since the last encounter with Abby, and it seems like Ellie has moved on. Or at least one would think until Tommy shows up with information on Abby's whereabouts. Ellie then decides again that she must get revenge for Joel at the cost of her and Dina's relationship. Ellie saves Abby from torture and possibly death so she could fight Abby one on one. During the fight Abby bites off two of Ellie's fingers at which point Ellie goes to drown Abby to ultimately let her go free, out of nowhere. in ten plus hours of playing as Ellie there is no hint that Ellie would let Abby live. It comes out of the blue, out of left field. In the end Ellie's quest for revenge left her with nothing. Dina and he child is gone, not to mention one of her friends killed at the end of her quest to find Abby. As well a missing two fingers hindering her abilities to play the guitar (that Joel gave her) and leaves it behind in the empty house. I guess its supposed to be her finally moving on and having closure.

I sorta get that Ellie is supposed to "end the cycle of revenge." However who is not to say the hundreds if not thousands of people that Ellie kills on her way to get to Abby, that their loved ones wouldn't want to seek out Ellie and kill her. That is quite literally what happened to Joel.

I feel like the whole game rely on you believing what Joel does at the end of the first game was horribly wrong. So that you can get past Joel's death and accept Abby's actions. It make me think that Naughty Dog wants to expand the Last of Us series beyond Ellie and Joel to tell other stories. However the game was marketed heavily on Ellie and Joel and kept Abby a secret, I think just to sell the game.

This is a story driven game and I believe it falls to deliver what they was trying to accomplish. For me that is half the score. The game is just okay, nothing to write home about.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't pay attention to what most people are saying. The Last of us Part 2, is far from a bad game, much less a game with 3/4 notes.

I understand people's indignation about this game, but that's no reason to say the game is bad, because it's not. People confuse quality with personal taste and that's a big mistake.

In general, the thing that most revolted the fans was 3 aspects: The death of Joel; The character "Abby" and the fact that we have to play with it, and the end of the game. All of them understandable, but not justifiable from so much hate. The purpose of a game is to have fun with it, right? Generally speaking, yes, because what's the point of me doing something that doesn't bring me any benefit? But this game is different. This game brings a narrative that no other game has ever brought, it's a cold and depressing story, where it shows us that "Revenge is a game for fools".

Joel's death is something very shocking, yes, capable of being one of the saddest moments in the history of games, but we have to take into consideration that it's not the protagonism that will save a character's skin. If we didn't want Joel to die? Of course we would. But the last of us already has a whole narrative prepared and we can't change that unfortunately.

About the character Abby, many said they had no empathy with her during the whole game, even after they knew it was Joel who killed her father. And that's completely normal, and I realise it can be frustrating to play with her, but the game doesn't make you like the character. You don't have to just agree to understand. You can say that the fact that her father was one of the surgeons who operated on Ellie is cliché and a weak point in the game script. I completely disagree, "Abby" is important to show the 2 sides of the coin, 2 different points of view, 2 different lives. Abby is not the villain of the game and never will be, as well as Ellie, only each one has their motivations and their reasons to practice such acts during the game.

Finally the final, which I personally didn't think was brilliant or perfect either, but it's not bad either. The ending shows us that nothing Ellie did was worth it, Dina left her, she's now alone, far from home and completely aimless in life. She lost 2 fingers, which makes her lose Joel's only legacy which was playing guitar and also makes her not be able to draw anymore (something she was very good at and liked to do). It's a tragic and very sad ending but it gives us a moral lesson that is, never too much to say that we love a person, sometimes a simple hug would make all the difference. Instead we prefer to keep our feelings to ourselves and be proud. The fact that Ellie didn't kill Abby was because she wouldn't be happy about it, Abby's death wouldn't fill that void and stop her from having that trauma, which is done, is done. At least Ellie saw a little hope in Abby with Lev in the end, which she couldn't have with Joel, unfortunately, and that she didn't want to take from Abby.

In conclusion, I'm not saying this game is perfect in terms of history because it's not. The first game is still a thousand times superior. What's really perfect about this game is the gameplay itself and the innovations they've given since the first game. And just for that, the game already deserved more than 3 or 4 marks.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us part 2 from a narrative perspective...is a mess. A beautiful mess. This story could have been so much more but due to poor direction and risky decision making by Neill Druckmann the end result simply didn’t quite hit the mark.

By having Abby kill Joel relatively early on in the story it automatically makes her hated by the player. So making said player have to take control of her for 10+ hours was an idiotic decision that frustrated many players( including myself). I feel that this could have been somewhat fixed if the story had been told in a different order. Allow the player to get to know Abby and her connection to Joel before she kills him; that way the player can actually understand to an extent why Abby does what she does. It may not change how you feel about her but at least it gives the player an appreciation for her actions before you have to play as her for half of the entire game. As for Abbys storyline...IT IS COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT TO THE ENTIRE GAMES PLOT!The Seraphites storyline has no impact on the fights between Ellie and Abby or the ending whatsoever! It’s as if Neill Druckmann came up with two entirely different games and decided to cram them both together. It simply DOESN’T WORK! The games ending was poorly executed as well. I don’t mind that the game has a sad ending as it feels rather poetic. What isn’t poetic is that I had to go through the Santa Barbra portion of the game facing off against ANOTHER group that once again have NO BEARING ON THE OVERALL STORY/ MESSAGE OF THE GAME WHATSOEVER! I wish that this section was cut out from the game as it feels tacked on and only serves as a way for Ellie and Abby to fight again. This could have easily been remedied by having a Seattle day 4 where you play as Ellie still hellbent on killing Abby. Then, have the fight scene take place, Ellie let’s Abby go and then have the game finish with Ellie and Dina at the farm where they can finally be happy. As the game comes to a close, we get to watch the flashback between Joel and Ellie where they somewhat reconcile and just like that... the game ends. That’s just my personal take on how I feel the story should have went but to be honest I would be happier with probably anything other than what we got. As for the characters in the game, I felt little connection or interest in any of the side characters besides the ones established in Part 1 as well as Dina. Jesse is a solid character but his only real character trait is that he is the father of JJ and his only role is to serve as your AI partner while Dina rests. However, despite what I just said, I did have quite an interest in Lev( the seraphite defect). His backstory is quite interesting and despite what many people think of Neill Druckmanns supposed “LGBT agenda”, I feel as though Levs sexuality and how it affects him as well as the others around him is the main thing that made me interested in the seraphite storyline. Don’t get me wrong, it is by no means a bad storyline, it just simply didn’t belong in THIS story! The best part about the plot in my opinion is the flashbacks we get as Ellie. Seeing her go to the dinosaur museum warmed my heart and I had a smile on my face the entire time. Truly a beautiful scene and my personal favourite part of the game. It’s unfortunate however that the best parts about this game are the flashback sequences as Ellie. They really put a lot of time and care into crafting these segments and it sucks that that care is not reflected in the main story.

In terms of gameplay, the game controls similarly to the first TLOU with enough newly added enemy types and gameplay mechanics to keep the formula fresh. Approaching encounters is so much fun because there are so many different ways you can play them. From killing enemy’s silently one by one to going on a shooting spree, it really feels like you are the character as they traverse through the game and I love that. The game from a technical standpoint runs great, the audio is spot on and the graphics are breathtaking. These qualities really make you feel immersed in the experience.

Unfortunately, however, these great qualities can’t save TLOU part 2 from being a game full of waisted potential. I don’t think it deserves all of the mass hate that it has been getting, but I can certainly see why some players have reacted negatively to the game. I hope that TLOU story ends here or if they decide to make a 3rd instalment, that it be centred on entirely different characters or that it be set in the past where we can take control as Joel once again.

Often I would accidentally go through a point of no return before fully exploring / looting the area before. I would have to reload a previous save and replay that part in order to not miss out on loot / collectibles. This is very frustrating and feels very restricted / claustrophobic (in a bad way). In the second part the story goes on and on and feels pointless. The game wears you out with repetitive looting, non explorable corridors, constant tension, lack of music, bad pacing and horrible character choices. I thought of quitting the game a couple of times.

This is a pretty good game, incredibly detailed and gorgeous, and improves upon it's predecessor in some ways, but is overall an inferior game. The first Last of Us is one of my favorite games of all times.

Story and writing are sharp. It does push some politics but not in the dramatic, goose-egg way that some people are claiming. However, I was very disappointed with the ending. It does not wrap up the journey in my opinion. A better ending would have bumped it up 1-2 points.

Combat and gameplay mechanics are improved, but again suffer from some drawbacks. Unique set pieces are much less frequent in this game, and it suffers from that rinse-and-repeat feel of a lot of open-world games. The first game was much tighter and linear. This game really opens up the world and it works at times, but it makes the game feel less unique and very mundane throughout a lot of it. I found myself exhausted and sneaking around, dispatching enemies, and scavenging, and because the story isn't as strong, and the characters not as engaging, it makes it that much harder to trudge through repetitive gameplay, however detailed and intense it may be (and they combat is very intense!). The first game was the perfect hybrid between open and linear and it worked. If I wanted an open world game and repetitive gameplay, I'll go play Assassin's Creed. I'm here for something more unique.

They added jumping and it "works" but that's about all it does: works. There is a lot of it and it doesn't feel great. A minor complaint, but when jumping is a crucial element to the gameplay and you are either jumping, squeezing, or sliding to progress through each section of the game, it should "feel" fun. Not like I'm fighting gravity or my character just ate a large pizza and is feeling lethargic. The same goes with the new "get knocked onto your back when you get shot" mechanic. It was exciting the first few times, but it happens WAY TOO OFTEN, and gets annoying quick, as every enemy seems to be an expert marksman, even when realistically, you get the drop on them (and I played on the moderate difficulty -- normal). The combat suffers from balance issues in this regard. The first game was too easy even on grounded (I could charge most enemies with a break and punch them to death), so I see why they tried to improve that, but it needs some tweaking.

Again, overall, a pretty good game. Some minor gameplay tweaks and even a slightly improved ending could upgrade this to a "great" game. It's a shame too, given how much detail and effort was put into this game. I appreciate all the hard work that Naughty Dog put into the game. That's why it's really too bad that the people in charge of the story couldn't wrap it up in a more compelling way. The first game was a masterpiece. This game has potential. But Naughty Dog missed the mark.

I never felt so emotionally drained after finishing a game. Everything was going great until you had to play as Abby, it just felt so wrong and forced. I understand what naughty dog is trying to do here but it just didn't happened. I never felt connected to Abby even they let us see her own perspective they even try to make Ellie's group look as the bad guys. I admire their courage to try something new or different though. Lastly after everything Ellie's have done she just let her go, its like a slap on my face but in my own view i think its still the best approach at that kind of situation but it could be a much better ending if Ellie didnt go after her in Santa Barbara. At times, the pacing of the game sucks too. I think its unfair to the developers to give such a very low rating given everything else was a masterpiece, from graphics, combat & gameplay.

If you never played the first game you probably will give this game a solid review but based on playing the first game would say that some of the character choices didn't fit with how the first game ran. The story also show from the trailers that they where going in multiple directions with this game and left me feeling disjointed. I currently don't see myself buying a third game of the last of us part 3 if they have one only way I would buy a third game is if they did a prequel like red dead redemption 2 where they cover the life of Joel and tess and bill and Marlene and Tommy and Ellie mother covering the last 20 years even if it includes the comic. If you have never played the fist one probably better to play part 2 first or else you probably won't feel to good about part to these are just my opinions so don't let my review stop you from buying or renting the game. Just did what you have to do. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is extremely well made but has no soul. The message of the game is "violence causes violence." For such a simple message the game is really long. The creators of this game seemed like they really hated Joel. The game goes out of its way to give Joel an extremely brutal death. His actions that led to his death were very out of character for him as well ( giving out his name to armed strangers being the main one).

TL;DR Fun game but feels like a waste of time.

This game was made with a lot of effort and heart, I will not denay that, and honestly I hope it can be a success comercially
But for me, it does not deserve 10 or 9, or 1 and 3, the last of us shined especially for its history, and the first one is superior in thisaspect, I know part 2 wanted to give a 'different way to show revenge' but it fails for me

Visually it’s a stunning game, but lacks a little emotional engagement. I haven’t connected so far with the characters I’ve met or played, yet I’m almost 25 hours in. Because of the limited resources, you’re forced to scour every area to stock up for the next inevitable battle and that takes some time. This is quite laborious due to the fact some of the locations are quite disorienting and you can end up going round in circles. It’s because of this I’m now powering through and hoping I don’t have much left to do, so I can re-sell it and still make some decent money. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m a big admirer of this franchise, I’m a little disappointed by the plot that was waiting for another outcome, giving the new character of "Abby" more prominence than "Ellie", you really get tired of not wanting to know anything about this character and you don’t care at all, I always had the illusion of playing with Joel again but this didn’t happen, it is very easy to criticize and not take into account the sacrifice that it takes to achieve a delivery like this and in the same way I enjoyed it but as the first one never compares anymore Expand

In my case, there are a lot of things that I absolutely agree with the critics but at the same time, I don't. Many say that the ending is horrible, and I get why they would say it and in some way, I agree with them. But also, by looking at the full story you realize that it is at the same time a very good ending. That's what I find most interesting. A lot of events and mayor spoilers that piss everyone off can be really good and ingenious and absolutely bad at the same time. In my case, when I finished the game I didn't even know if I liked it or not. It was so confusing and it led to lots of mixed opinions in my head that I had no "only thought" about it.

Technically it is a masterpiece. The graphics are mindblowing and the gameplay is on point. The combat is probably the most fun I had ever had and it all blends together nicely. The acting is award-winning, as well as the soundtrack by Santaolalla and all the sound-making in general. The environments, as all of Naughty Dog's games, are just breathtaking. The bad thing that I and lots of people found about this game is the story. I personally loved TLOU and its narrative, as it became one of the games that most impacted me and has definitively changed my way of seeing things. I have completed it 3 times, the last one in the most difficult setting. That is why I wanted TLOU 2 to be a continuation of Ellie's and Joel's story because I wanted to be back at that world again. The problem for me is that it doesn't really happen, and half or more of the game is filled with new characters with different stories in different places. Some people may like this and its why I said that this game is an expert in leaving different opinions that are all equally valid. For me, I wanted a story based on Joel and Ellie again, but maybe others wanted a different narrative with different characters, which I respect the same way I respect my likings.

In general, I don't think at all the game deserves the hate it got at its release, because it is a really good game. And I respect the fact that they risked a lot to make something different and not just go to the safe option and make a game that everyone will like so they can get guaranteed success. They really tried to make something different and not just give the player what he wants and that's something all of us should consider before leaving a negative review.

In conclusion, I think it is a good game and it is not something you will regret buying, although you will have to keep in mind the fact that there may be aspects or parts of the game which you might not like.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll never truly understand why people despise this game so much, but I will say that this is was one of the most thought-provoking and emotionally draining games I've ever played. The story was one of intense grittiness and overall sadness that made you think about the repercussions of revenge and hate. One thing I was always expecting was Joel's death, however, I never imagined it to be quite on the humiliating scale it was. However, killing the main character, especially like this, does not make a story bad. The vendetta and journey Ellie goes through makes you seriously question whether this is all worth it and whether Abby deserves it. At first, I was livid for making us play as Abby, however, when you see everything from her perspective you really start to wonder if you actually want her dead. This game really made me ask myself the hard questions and really try to think about Ellie's relationship with Joel and Abby's own redemption.

This game is not without flaws, however. There are times where I was frustrated with the pacing and it was just boring at times. Some characters could probably have used a little more development such as Jesse and Abby's friends. Additionally, the structure of killing Abby's friends and then later learning more about them (when playing as Abby) was not the smartest move on Druckman.

The discontentment with fans is, in my opinion, over-exaggerated and uncalled for. It is completely ok to say a game is good but also has some serious flaws. But to establish a game as absolute garbage is tribal at it's finest. I can understand the anger with a much-loved character dying, however, a main character dying does not make the story bad. If you think it does, then don't watch "No Country for Old Men" or "1917." I also know that people hate the way he died, however, this was purposeful and meant to inspire intense anger within Ellie and the audience. Additionally, people in this day and age are so blinded by their political views that they will apply their tribal mindset onto any media they consume and will accuse it of having an "agenda." People are so fixated that there is an agenda with everything that they cannot just let it go for a playthrough of the game. I've never been much for political correctness and whatnot, but never once did I think "Wow, Naughty Dog is encouraging an agenda and this is too political for me." People think the entirety of this game is an "agenda" or "doesn't care about its fans" or whatever. First, we need to realize that stories should never be created solely on fan service. A story is written by an author and we as the readers/gamers experience this story and make our interpretations. Fan service is for the toxic and tribal people who decide what an author writes through mob rule. I do not feel comfortable demanding that these creators or any creator make media for how I like it and only me. I let them make the choices and tell their story, and then I make my interpretation. I do not usually establish a story as 100% bad because that is usually never true (unless it's an extremely garbage movie/game with nothing for it but a cash grab).

This game has some annoying flaws and is far from perfect. I found this game to be excellent in some of its storytelling aspects, but questionable in some of its choices. Do not let anyone tell you how you should like a game or berate you for liking a game that they don't. Try to play the game with an open mind and try to remember that not everything in the entire world has a political agenda. This is a story about humans, and politics should be the least of your worries when playing this game. This game is very divisive and polarized when it comes to opinion, however, in actuality this game is really just in between average. But It is up to each individual on how they interpret the game, but try not to be influenced by the mob. Do not listen to me or what anyone else says, play the game and you decide for yourself if this game was worthy of a playthrough.

Considering that is a sequel, it is difficult for the gamer to empathize with Abby. The story could be better, do that we have been waiting 5 years for a great story. Losing Joel at the begging is something that the gamer can't deal with and that's why we expect more from Ellie during the whole story.
Graphics, BSO and the gameplay are great for PS4 pro and HR tv. I also expected more from the end, as having a face to face super deep conversation (Abby and Ellie) or to know more from Ellie's new life. I have been waiting 20 minutes for the final credits and we deserved a final scene.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Im trying to be neutral, first of all as most people know this game is well known because of its father and daughter relationship in the middle of this zombie apocalypse, ND did a really good job, people expect to be experiencing that kind of story at least, they already hype when they see joel in the trailer. But ND decided to kill one of the most important character that they buld ver very hard in the first game. Its ok to kill him but at least make it more heroic. And the way ND force us to play the person who kill joel is a great way to show us a different perspective, but for me it is not enough to make me empathize about her. The ending is pretty good although it is not the ending i want, if we can see more of ellie and joel relationship in the beginning where it can bring back the father and daughter we have been looking for, maybe the ending is going to be more acceptable. To sum it up, im just hoping joel death to be good and meaningful and more emotional so it can always attach to our hearts just like when Arthur die in rdr 2. For the rest of it i give it 10000/10, from graphic, face motion capture, gameplay, sound, environment and the characters development from ellie side. Expand
