A phenomenal sequel, with a cinematic feel and powerful storytelling that shakes you to the core. Don’t listen to the haters who haven’t played it and only pay attention to leaks, or are mad because the story didn’t go the way THEY WANT. This game is a work of art, from the every element of game design. It’s a testament to the hard work of everyone at Naughty Dog.

Absolutely incredible followup to the first. The balance is spot on and you are able to really become immersed in the story. I logged about 37 hours in my first playthrough, but I also took a lot of time searching for items. I highly recommend this game and the franchise as a whole.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A masterful evolution of narrative gameplay. Beautifully executed, if not a bit under developed in the evolution of the game mechanics. Every new character is alive, and more interesting than the next. Truly a well developed, and frankly obviously step from the previous incarnation. A bit derivative in the story, but still engaging. Anyone who saw Joel as a hero from the first installment is an idiot. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My view of TLOU2's Storytelling: Joel dies a pitiful, sickening, post traumatic stress inducing death. Justice is not properly served throughout the entirety of Ellie’s brutal crusade. The newly introduced characters are basically irrelevant and apart from serving as Ellie's emotional support; Jesse, Dina, Tommy, and a few other characters are simply killed off or brutally injured without being given a fighting chance. Tommy and Ellie do get some vengeance in killing Manny, Nora, Owen, Mel and a few others. However, Abby, the catalyst of their conflict, escapes with her life time and time again. Along the way, there are some good (I'd even say "great") moments of character development for each respective character(s). Although, it's more or less just an emotional tease for the viewer and does not have any major impact on the outcome of the story. They show time and time again that Naughty Dog was able to produce a tear jerking story of meaningful friendships and satisfying revenge but decided to avoid that route and instead give players a dreadful tale to follow from beginning to end. As you continue to play, Abby is arguably the focus of this game and being forced to play from her perspective is torturous. I'm assuming Naughty Dog tried to give Abby a sympathetic outlook on the game's story in order to make her a more tolerable character. We learn that Abby is afraid of heights, likes collects coins, helped her father rescue a Zebra, etc. She even rescues a young child from a group of survivors similar to, but far more savage than, that of David's group from TLOU1. During that event Abby is supposed to reveal her positive characteristics but it isn't before long that we are reminded of her equally monstrous desire for revenge and stomach for brutality. Abby is only compassionate to her friends and will kill anyone else without remorse and having to carry out that violence by her hands is cringeworthy. Ellie shows empathy for her enemies and is shown to be suffering from PTSD throughout her day to day life; especially after cornering and killing Nora. She even tries to sympathize with Abby by telling her that she knows why Abby wanted to kill Joel before they proceed to fight in a theater. Ellie understands that she was a victim of Joel's lie and Abby was a victim of Joel's massacre. Ellie is mature and able to reason with the enemy while Abby is pretty much just shooting whoever makes her mad. More than this, it is revealed later in the game that Abby *never* witnessed her dad being killed by Joel. She only saw his corpse some time after he was murdered. While in contrast, Ellie was cruelly forced to witness Joel's murder and therefore Ellie's lust for revenge has a unique justification that Abby's does not. Abby went out of her way on a 4 year long mission to hunt and kill a man that had put his past behind him and she gets away with it: Abby escapes and starts a new life with her friend Lev. Ellie, our protagonist and the victim of Abby's violence, does not get that luxury and is left with no shoulder to lean on as she returns to a farm house with physical and mental scarring.

My view of TLOU2's Game-play: Without expressing my opinions on every aspect of this game, just know that I find the game-play very satisfying and rightly improved. The fighting mechanics are much better than before, especially in hand to hand combat as the player now has the option to dodge incoming attacks. The player can now also jump, maneuver via rope, and crawl. Most of the surrounding areas are also available for exploration which gives the player a true sense of freedom. The graphics are wonderful with both the environment and the characters in the environment and the lighting provides a very immersive feeling for the player and viewer alike. The physics of most objects are very realistic and I like the way that snow and rain interact with the world. I also find the voice acting and sound effects to be phenomenal as the speech, coughs, grunts, laughs, cries, yells, gunfire, footsteps and more were completely believable and did not distract the player from the setting of the events.

My overall review: To sum this up. I was consistently tense throughout the entirety of the game after Joel's death and from that point forward each of my fears were confirmed and often surpassed around every corner. Naughty Dog achieved their goals in delivering a tragic story and I have no complaints about inconsistencies with their storytelling. My problem is that the story they chose to tell is one of injustice and despair. Our characters did not have a happy ending. Joel's death alone left me with so many tears and negative emotions that I had no choice but to see through the entire story just so that I could get proper closer. The game-play alone deserves a 4/5 but the story is essentially evil.

Sony and Naughty dog, especially Neil druckmann should be ashamed for using bots to increase the ratings. This is a complete joke of a game. The violence and the story delivers a very clique message that 'revenge solves nothing' at the expense of Ellie's character and the joy of the gamers. This is an insult to the first game and clearly these guys have no idea why we liked the first game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly, I think that this game was what it was supposed to be cinematically and so much improved from the TLoU1 mechanically. Storyline(spoiler after disclaimer) - Ellie and Abby’s arch’s make sense if you consider them as real people rather than characters in your story. PTSD, sorrow, sadness masquerading as revenge, and finding closure without finality are all real and I felt it all. I felt the rage and bloodlust after (spoilers until next paragraph) Joel’s death. I felt the confusion at finding all the dead in Seattle, I felt the tiredness at the end of day 2, the confusion and sense of duty as Abby, and when I was at the farm with my family I felt like I’m done but, can I just leave it like that. Once I was in this fight with Abby, I just didn’t want it to be so personal, why couldn’t I just shoot her. Why are the developers making me do this, imagine being Ellie in that fight. “Why do I have to kill her? I’m so tired. I’ve come so far. Is this really what I want or just what I think I need to do. This does nothing for Joel. This kid will die if I kill Abby. I just want this to be over.” And so she chose it to be over. To choose herself and her conscience over revenge. I loved it. Also, it had some of the unfairness of real life. I did all this **** to get the surgery kit for her to get merc’ed come on. Lol The story was great if you’re willing to let go of, well basically yourself, and realize Joel had a good heart yes. But he was far from perfect and made bad decisions, and was ultimately as selfish as everyone in that godforsaken world, and as Ellie have to go against that mentality in the end. Game mechanics - I liked everything the changed from the first
    -Finally I have a knife
    -I can jump
    -I can craft arrows
-I can dodge and get into real brawls
    -I can make silencers
    -I can go prone
In general the gameplay was smoother and cleaner than a game from 2013 nothing to write home about. Cons-
It felt too easy...? I played it on the hardest mode and it felt pretty easy to kill anything, my ammo was usually full, my backpack was usually full, I found all of the cards. I hope they drop a harder update but that’s about all.

    Thanks for reading!

The sound is awesome, combat music and voice acting are better than award winning movies.

The graphics for the most part seems like next gen visuals.

The gameplay takes cues from mgs 5 and its pretty varied and intense on higher difficulties. Enemies are very aggressive and don't seem dumb on hard and survivor. However i was able to break the AI twice in the game. Gun play feels very good; gun variety is also present. Skill trees although half of them are meaningless, its a welcome addition for replay value on new game plus to completely level up .

The game length is also decent clocking around 31 hours on my first play through on hard. New game plus is a welcome addition.

Game also contains extras like concept art and character models if you like those things.

Performance on the base ps4 launch version was very impressive with almost no frame rate dips. Encountered frame rate issues once but it was gone once the game was restarted.

Almost zero bugs in the game. Encountered one buggy shimmy animation in my 60 hours with the game.

It's easy to see the "story" in poor taste if you're relying on just leaks or clips of certain scenes, which almost takes the scene out of context. It seems a bit unfair to judge the game on that basis without giving it a chance.

ok so i have played the game twice from start to finish now, and i like the game, and i hate the game, but i did not like Abby at all, she sounds stupid when you confronts her about killing Joel, when Joel killed her dad, he just killed him, he did not torture him for a long time or kill him in front of his daughter real or not, so yes of course we will hate Abby, that being said, i actually really liked the game, it is def a 8.5/10, there are elements i did not like about the story, killing the two named dogs was a big one, don't force me to kill a dog and then name them after, that is just cruel as **** and the Abby segment was way to long, i understand getting her backstory, and some of the leading up to the fight stuff, but there was too much of it, and i just wanted to get past it to play as Ellie again, also Tommy just turning into an **** in the end did not sit right with me, so yeah there is some stuff i did not like about the game, but the game was a beautiful one, and one i will remember for a long time to come, and if there will be a part 3 to The last of us, i will def buy and play it to the fullest too :D

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of US 2 is the most conflicting game I've ever played. At times I hated it and at times I loved it. I was completely split down the middle. The first game introduced me to two of the most deep and believable characters in any game I've ever played. I couldn't wait to be reintroduced to them again and I was but not in the way I expected. During my first playthrough I was angry, confused and heartbroken. I questioned everything about Joel's death and why it was done so fast and so brutally. I almost didn't want to continue after that moment but my care for Ellie kept me going. Playing as Ellie again was refreshing and seeing how much she has developed and grown was interesting. When the narrative switched back to Abby i was upset. I was so angry at this character, I wanted her to feel the pain I felt and i knew Ellie felt. I'll be honest playing as Abby didn't change my mind, I just wanted to end and see where Ellie ended up, but when the game finally concluded I realized something. I realized what the games message was, at least what it was to me. Love is blinding. Love makes us do the best and worst of things. My love for Joel and Ellie prevented me from seeing they were just people and just as damaged as Abby. In the world of The Last Of Us everyone has had to cross a moral line to survive and Joel and Ellie are no exception but the love I have for these characters made me biased. Naughty Dog masterfully challenged the players own moral compass in this game by showing how flawed even the main characters are. I've never went so deep in thought over a video game and this is why i appreciate it so much. This game has the most bright of moments and the most dark of moments and ends on a note of mystery. Obviously the visuals are stunning, acting is second to none and I wouldn't expect anything less from a Naughty Dog game. I recommend playing the game twice because the first playthrough so emotionally heavy and can effect your perception on all the themes this game is trying to present. I'll end by saying that I'm still torn by the events of The Last Of Us Part 2 but at the same time I'm appreciative of the authentic emotional and realistic connection I have to Joel and Ellie. I really hope there is a third game because I want to Ellie's story continue. Expand

This game really is not anything like I thought it would be and in fact it is completely the opposite of what I thought it would be. I'm just quite speechless.

Let me tell you what my experience consisted of:

Initially when they introduced Joel again talking to Tommy: This is awesome! I'm right at home again!

When they forced me to play a character I didn't have any desire to play: Why do I have to play her, I hope it's not for long.

The entire spot that kicks off the game: This sucks but I'm sure it'll make it a better story.

The Entirety of Seattle: THIS IS AWESOME

The second half of the game: This is terrible, just 10 more hours of it? That sounds like a grind so I'm just going to look up the ending.

My time on YouTube: This ending is terrible.

My opinion on this game is to steer clear, the gameplay is good but they'll get you invested just to pull you away right at the climax of the story and force you to do stuff that really just takes you out of the experience and immersion to the point that you just google how it ends to get it over with.

This is such a stain on the franchise, a real damn shame as it was my very favorite franchise ever.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My main issue with this game is some parts being very good, 10/10 even, and others being so unbelievably bad it almost makes you turn the game off. Naughty Dog did an excellent job in a bunch of different aspects, but ultimately failed in the most important one. I want to be clear, I do not hate the story, but i did not love it. I expected Joel to die and so did a lot of fans, and I don’t believe Joel was acting “out of character” for trusting Abby and her people. He had been in a trusting town for 4+ years and if you read the log book, they clearly try to help out whoever they can. However, the way Abby is set up simply makes it almost impossible to like or empathize with her. Joel was simply too beloved to be killed off like he was some NPC. And the fact that I had to play with his killer for 10-12+ hours was criminal. I don’t mind her being a playable character for a short amount (maybe 5-6 hours), but fans were told Ellie would be the only playable character by Druckmann himself so that was a slap in the face. Abby is also just a pretty **** person, the game tries to show you some good things she’s done to make you change your mind but Mel hit the nail on the head when she was **** her out. Naughty Dog also tried to make Ellie very unlikeable. They force you to do horrible things as her then judge you for it when you play as Abby (killing her dog for example). However, I actually really liked most of the new side characters; Dina and Jesse were great, and I think Abby’s crew had some bright spots as well. The acting in this game was some of the best i have ever seen, even with the subpar script they were given. Ashley Johnson absolutely killed it in every single scene. The facial expressions and animations are easily the best i’ve seen in a video game. The same thing can be said about the graphics, sound and music. The world Naughty Dog built and brought to life in this game is absolutely breathtaking, i found myself stopping and just admiring it regularly throughout the game. I have never felt this immersed in a game other than the first installment in this series. I’ve seen some complaints about how the gameplay hasn’t evolved at all since the last game and I don’t necessarily agree with that. While the core aspects of the gameplay may be the same even small additions like prone, dodge, and a knife that doesn’t break every time you use it give you so many more options on how to tackle each level. The puzzles in this game were your typical Naughty Dog puzzles. Not an extreme variety, you’ll get a few dumpsters and some ropes and a few secret entrances. TLOU will never blow you away with their puzzles. This game is rather easy to get lost in, however. Admittedly, I needed the hint feature to pop up on the screen a few times. The enemies in Part 2 suffer from
the same thing they did in the first game: repetition. There isn’t much to say about this, you just fight the same 5 things the entire game, and most of them can be taken out with the same strategy. Human AI is still incredibly dumb with extremely narrow fields of vision. Dogs were a neat addition but ultimately very easy to counter. Overall, i rate this game a 7/10 with the cons being a bad set up for one of the protagonists, Joel dying way too early in the game, the way he died, drawn out sections of the game, repetitive enemies and lazy writing. The pros of this game are the graphics, acting, animation, sound, music, and level design. The story for the game as a whole falls somewhere in between pros and cons.

It was incredible. But it was not perfect. In fact, the flaws in the game were so glaring that it’s a testament to how great the game is that I still gave it an 8. I think it’s worth noting that I played the game through after successfully avoiding any spoilers or leaks that were abundant in the lead-up to the game’s release, so I played the game untainted from any and all controversy. (Tangentially, I believe it highly likely that the vast majority of the low scores were submitted by people before playing—much less finishing—the game.) In short, TLOUP2 is probably the best game I’ve played in several years. For a minute there I thought it might be the best game I’ve ever played, period. Alas.

Easily the biggest flaw of TLOUP2 was that it kept going... and going... and going some more. Which problem was compounded by the fact that it also suffered from the same issue as the first game—repetition. By the end of the first game I was just so tired of going into a “new” (old) building and killing infected in (basically) the same ways, searching for the same stuff, etc. I felt like TLOUP2 tried to improve this by mixing in more fights against humans (WLF, Scars, Rattlers), which was a nice change of pace. But with the game playing as long as it did, it still resulted in the same issue. By the end of the game I was barely going through the motions of playing the game, just to see the story play out.

Which brings me to what I thought was one of the strongest and also weakest parts of the game: the story. I am in the camp that thought the story was brilliant. It was masterfully created, told, and tied together. It was compelling. It was thought provoking. HOWEVER—as good as I thought the story was, it was just EXHAUSTING. In a good way at times... but HOLY GOD. By the end it was just too much. Making you play fetch with the dog that you know you already took pleasure in killing just a few hours ago was just cruel. (There were numerous examples of this.) The most egregious over-the-top-ism I think was essentially turning the audience against Ellie by the end. I got the point. I see what they were trying to do. But I’m just not sure it was necessary to that extent.

Further to the point of the story being a tad over the top, I lost track of the number of times various social justice themes were driven home. Hammered home. THUNDERED home. I don’t want to be beaten over the head with a cause—even ones I support. Especially in a video game. And everyone got the transgender message here. We didn’t need a not-so-subtle-dialogue explaining it to us. Much less witness the boy’s religion, society, AND MOTHER try to kill him for it, all but forcing him to turn against everything he knows and loves—to include murdering his own mother. Again, just a bit unnecessary.

Anyway, again—great game. Amazing game. So many really great moments. Graphics, game play, soundtrack, acting, dialogue... they really nailed it in a lot of ways. And even with some of the flaws prevalent throughout, I think the game would have gotten a 9 or even a 10 from me if the whole thing had ended with Ellie sitting on the tractor watching the sunset. Story was told, lessons were learned, characters are still (mostly) beloved. It was enough. It was more than enough. The rest was just superfluous.

THE LAST OF US was one of the games that made me a proud of being a PlayStation User, the potential of this game was over the sky, the mechanics and new graphics was/is crazy. I am still playing online the first game. So I obviously waited so long for this. *Spoilers ahead*

And you have the audacity to kill my favourite character at the hands of this RondaRussey looking **** with a Golf club, A **** NORDIC BARBARIAN BEATS THE **** OUT OF poor Joel’s head. And you don’t stop there, you make me play up to 20 hours with this character that doesn’t exist yet I developed such a anger and resentment. I don’t know, I guess I got my expectations too high for a game that I have no control over, is like falling in love with the wrong person. Jessie, Shot in the face, does happen in front of Ellie, so did Joel and Tommy got hit on his eye in front of her as well. What does she do? Lose her fingers and her family. This is not about money, I don’t care if I have to pay more for a DLC, (already pay too much as I got “special” edition. ) Give me something else in Santa Barbara, go to the fireflies and get and alternative cure I DONT KNOW, but please do something

Don’t make me play again with the murder of my favourite character, I don’t care if she is the Pope lost daughter, I don’t like Abby, I don’t want to play a game where I hate the character.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What can i say, i adored the first game. Joel and ellie quickly became my favorite character's due to their bond that grew along the hard journey they took, fighting for eachother, the joke's they had along the way and their hardships. Last of us 2 **** on this. Not only did they kill joel within 2 hrs of playing, they gave him a gruesome death for shock value. I still kept playing though as i still had some kind of hope that it'd get better, I was soo so wrong. The ellie half i had so much fun with, i seriously thought i'd be playing as ellie the whole time. WRONG. Once they switched me to abby i about quit, i was so disgusted by the fact they forced me to play as joel's killer, i didn't know how they could do this. Not only was playing as abby i didn't give two ****s about her, they go on to force you to beat ellie to a pulp along with dina, i was so sick to my stomach, they also killed jesse for shock, they tryed so hard to paint abby as a decent person but she say's GOOD when ellie tells her dinas pregnant as she's about to slit her throat? WTF IS WRONG WITH ND. After the ellie/abby fight i just wanted it to end but they kept dragging the game ON AND ON. They than switch you to ellie again, she's finally happy with dina and baby boy but deeply broken and suffering of PTSD... Than tommy show's up, he degrades ellie to not give up on persuing abby, "this make's no fking sense" so ellie decides to later leave. Than more gameplay a small part of abby than ellies trip on finding her again. She finds her and they fight, but guess what. Ellie doesnt kill her, she let's her go! I get it but than i don't. Abby was half dead and broken that she could of killed her, but ellie see's joel and stops right after losing two fingers STILL. At that point i was completely done, i get not killing her in a way, it'd be low, but they did this part for WHAT? so ellie could finally lose everything because she fking did, she lost dina and baby boy, she lost the only thing she had left of joel due to her finger loss LIKE WTF WAS THE POINT? ND thought they had not destroyed ellie enough?! Fk ND i waited just like everyone else for this when it wasn't a needed sequel and all they did was destroy my beloved character's.. Broke them, turned them into evil people that they never were in the first game. All i got from playing this was depressed feelings and too many tears. Also no i would of been fine with joel dying, i knew he'd die eventually from what he had done.. But not like that... The story as well was a fking mess, they should of had abby's part first than bring it to the point where she runs into joel and kills him, than it switches to ellie.. But they didnt do this.. It was spun around, made no sense, it was just a fking pathetic joke to play through. Hope ND are happy with how they destroyed last of us 2 and all the first game stood for. Expand

A poor sequel. They should not have waited so long after the success of the first, because they lost all impetus for the second. Don't wait 7 years to make a sequel - it might not work.

ALMOST every story beat is either a flip or a direct continuation of the certain dialogues from the first game. For example: in the first hour of the first game, Joel loses his daughter and in this game Ellie loses her "father". Even the ending upon reflection is a direct response to Ellies conversation to Sam when she says Shes afraid of ending up alone. I really enjoyed the The Last of Us Part 2, the game really makes an effort to have you understand the choices that were made and fleshes out certain details to give you more insight to the world naughty dog has created. The characters were some one of the highlights for me! I also appreciate the fact that the characters Though I didn’t agree with every story beat, I was able to enjoy almost the thing in its entirety. Expand

Every single thing about the game is masterfully executed other than the narrative and writing.
The art, programming, animation, visual effects, lighting, music, ambience, atmosphere, world building, etc. All God tier!!!
There's an amazing template here that has the potential to house really great story's.

Expand

Absolute Masterpiece. I have to support Neil and the team for their stellar work here. If only all the haters realised their response is the exact conversation ND is having with this game.

The gameplay feels okay, nothing too special about it.
Graphics look amazing, one of the best for consoles.
Story is so bad, it's just so dumb and it has a lot of plot holes.
Years of wait for this, very disappointing.

Amazing game. Don’t let the haters get to you. Play with an open mind and as spoiler free as possible. Amazing visuals, gameplay, voice acting and Mocap. Story is powerful and engaging, not quite as tight as the first but still far more interesting than most any other game on the market.

The Last of Us Part II is the much anticipated sequel to The Last of Us. Expectations were high but unfortunately it just didn't deliver. That being said the game isn't terrible or the worst of the worst but it also isn't a masterpiece (definitely not as good as the first game).

The Story and Characters (The Writing): It is bad. It had some good ideas but the execution is very poorly

The Story and Characters (The Writing):
It is bad. It had some good ideas but the execution is very poorly done. The more you think about the story the more you realize how bad and nonsensical it is. You'll have plot points happen which are plain stupid and have characters do things which frankly make no sense. The pacing needed a lot of work and considering how high expectations were for the writing with The Last of Us Part II being a narrative driven game this is not good. FYI it isn't terrible because it has some good moments and if restructured could have been better than what we got.

    Gameplay:
What's a game without gameplay. The Last of Us Part II's gameplay is solid. It plays the exact same way as the first game with the addition of a dodge button and a few tweaks to movement and combat (honestly its like a clunkier Uncharted 4...) but the gameplay is average, it works although more innovation would have been nice.

Technical Aspects (Graphics, Sound Design, Music, Voice Acting):
From a technical stand point the game is amazing. The graphics are absolutely beautiful and the attention to detail is a thing to behold. The sound in this game is wonderful too, the musical score and voice acting are top notch and a pleasure to listen to. Technical aspect wise they nailed it (although there's some technical issues to iron out and enemies could have used some more variety).

    Final Thoughts:
The Last of Us Part II is an average game. The story and the writing is bad yes but the game itself is okay. The solid gameplay and great technical aspects help make the game better. That being said given all the hype and expectation it is a huge letdown and definitely soured me towards the franchise.

(It's not a bad game in spite of the poor writing but I also wouldn't call it good either and definitely not amazing. Average game)

The Last of Us part 2 is a very breathtaking visual stunner, the mechanics are greatly improved from the first game and the various death animations and combat moves are cool. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
