This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a good story that I believe was told badly. This game genuinely has parts of the story that I enjoyed, but I feel goes too far in delivering its themes and messages to me. I don't mind the fact that Joel being murdered due to the consequences of his actions in a previous game and then being forced to play as the murderer to see a different perspective, but the way it happened and the order of events didn't work with me. I also found the ending boss fight with Abby and Ellie to be wholly unnecessary and gratuitous in its efforts to hammer in its theme of forgiveness. Expand

I held that character deeply and wanted to be just like the character when I played the first last of us. I felt broken after experiencing what happened and it haunts my every waking moment and I’m traumatised, I’m nearly brought to tears every time I think about it and when a beloved character was so disrespected and taken out in a brutal manner, a big part of me died inside. I’ve been playing video games ever since I could hold a controller and love story telling, but I think this game has ruined both for me. Like I couldn’t continue on in the game I don’t think I’ll be able to continue on playing video games, it breaks my heart that the person I wanted to be back in 2013 when this game came out was taken away I don’t think I’m myself anymore. The graphics and gameplay is amazing but minus points for making me kill dogs. Expand

It seems the people who rate it above 7/10 can actually articulate why they have given it the score they have. The negative reviews just seem inaccurate, missing key points in the game that counter there own arguments. Or are just so in love with Joel they can’t move past his death. It’s a meta game, I hated what the leaks said, I also hated the game for the first 10 hours. Once I reflected on what happens, and how it happened. I love what they did. It’s not perfect, but rarely does a game come along that will burrow this deep under your skin. For good and bad reason. The game is a 9/10 for me, but given the huge amount of 0/10 by salty “fans” I’m giving it a 10 to try and balance it out. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am going to go through all aspects of the game, and give my honest opinions on the game as a whole.

Graphics: stunning, beautiful, the water, the grass everything was just gorgeous. The game will look phenomenal on the ps5.

Combat: their were a lot of moments where I felt the tension, where I died and had to approach the situation differently. Abby and Ellie are two different play types, Ellie is more ranged and stealth, while Abby is much more offensive and melee. They were different enough to create a bit of variety in the game-play. My biggest complaint is the enemy types. You have all the zombies from the first game, Clickers, Runners, Bloaters, and Stalkers. There is a new one called the Shambler that is a mix of bloater and runner. The only other enemies are people and dogs. There was not enough types to make the game feel different, it was more running into the same thing after about a couple hours.

Abby: The character that has received a lot of controversy. First thing, she is not trans, that was misleading on the leaker's part. The game explains her physique by saying she trained a lot, which too me is skeptical cause we are in an apocalypse. We don't have the resources for that kind of stuff. She is introduced poorly, she is brought in as the villain of the game, so for about 15-18 hours I saw her as the villain. She did kill Joel, brutally, and it ruined my first impression of the character. As I played her my opinion only changed slightly, but that was due to interactions with Yara and Lev. All her friends didn't make me think she was a good, kind, caring person, since in the end her friends are killers too. Lev and Yara brought a better side to her, but it was more like 'oh she fells guilt' but by the time you actually get to this you begin to get tired of her. I think she should have had her own game, not be shoved in as a replacement for Ellie and Joel. You could play the game, not play Abby's, part and nothing would change.

Ellie: Who cares if she gay, its Ellie, she can be as gay as she wants. Ellie felt over dramatized to me, like she would not admit or talk about things that would bother her, and it was frustrating. True, she did go through a lot and is now on a revenge quest. But Ellie just felt disconnected from the other characters at times. Yes her and Dina were cute, but only for an hour before the revenge took Ellie and made her distant from Dina. And for some odd reason when Ellie killed some characters she acted like she has never done that before, like it was her first time. Trust me it wasn't. I get the PTSD of Joel's death, but it felt like Ellie would at times be fine with being a badass, but then would feel instant regret. It wasn't until the ending did I feel she actually got anywhere as a character. Yes she did let Abby go, which meant she was trying to let her revenge go. I enjoyed Ellie more in the flashbacks between her and Joel then i did in the main game. Her killing of Mel was extreme, but what would have made it work more was if for a moment she saw Dina, that would warrant the reaction she had. Overall she felt like a forced drama point, and you didn't even get to play her for the whole game so you couldn't watch her arc from beginning to end.

Side characters: Jesse was cool and loved having him (then they killed him), Dina wasn't bad but got better as the game went on, Owen was also interesting (till they for some reason forced a **** scene between him and Abby, what are we 12?), Mel was sweet and I could understand her (till they killed her) , Manny was hilarious and they killed him, Nora was like a protective friend (also dead), Yara was an amazing big sister (also dead), and Lev was just a character I wished we could have explored more. Btw Lev is the true trans and let him live out his life as he pleases. I would love to have a spin off about Lev and what he goes through.

Story: I get the 'revenge is a horrible cycle thing' but the game is forcing you to feel bad for characters. You play as Ellie, killing these people that are actively trying to kill you, and everything is fine. Your enjoying the game. Then you play as Abby, and the game proceeds to show the people you killed, and how good they are, how sweet the dogs are, how they aren't so bad. The game wants you to feel bad. But frankly, I didn't care, because as a player they are the 'villains'. As for the ending, I get it, but I don't feel anything worthwhile out of it. I don't feel shocked, moved, stunned, or sad. I pretty much said "OK, was that it?" The story isn't some interwoven psychological brain teezer. This game is a sequel, but its not the best sequel. I get that characters die in such a harsh world, but to start the player off with that just ruins the players experience, it takes the action away from them and forced them to be a bystander while they watch characters drop like flies. If you like the game, good for you, I wouldn't recommend it without some caution.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The games itself, in regards to mechanics, mood, music etc, was amazing. some of the best stealth combat ive ever experienced and the upgrades system was really great. Graphics speak for themselves; they were beyond beautiful and the small details blew me away (dust particles, light spills, ai interactions...) The game also did an amazing job of making me feel on edge at some points. HOWEVER, i feel the greatest downfall lies in the actual story. with the original last of us, I really felt a connection to the characters and the story made sense to me. Even in the left behind DLC, I really fell in love with it. In part two, i felt none of that. I did not connect with the characters in the same way and the demise of joel was extremely undeserving, despite whatever hes done. Abby is just as guilty as Joel in many things. Im not upset Joel died, i actually expected it. Its the manner it happened: him easily giving Tommy and his name to complete strangers (whether or not he knew their intentions, this is not something the Joel we know wouldve done. He was always overly cautious of strangers. you would think he would continue to be cautious especially knowing hes wronged alot of people), the spitting on his dead body and then the attempt to make players understand and like abby. The game bounces from place to place frequently and the only redeeming point in the story for me was in the Joel flashbacks, especially the one with the museum. seeing Ellie and Joel interact in that way was exactly the experience I was looking for when jumping into the continuation of their story. My absolute least favorite portion was the TEN HOURS you play as Joels killer, Abby. it felt redundant and, as hard as the game tried, I never felt an ounce of sympathy and remorse for her. Just constantly found myself annoyed and rushing through this portion. playing catch with a dog or being nice to SCARS after killing dozens is not redeamable qualities for someone that killed the person that made the game what it was. I read a comment on youtube that said, "you wouldnt kill Nathan Drake in the first hour of any of the uncharted games". In the end, Ellie doesnt even get the revenge she had fought so hard to get. She flashes to a memory of her and joel the night of her kiss with Dina. They plan on attempting to repair their relationship. and this make her let abby go?? as she has her drowning, on the brink of death she goes, "oh yeah. nevermind." after murdering and rampging through so many different groups and areas, she just.... lets the whole thing go. this felt not only out of character for Ellie, but a slap in the face to both fans and the characters. I feel like this wouldve motivated her further, seeing joels face and the possibility of them getting back to where they were. the game couldve ended countless times: at the farmhouse the first time with Dina, At the theatre When Playing as Abby or even when Ellie is walking around with jj, Exploring their new home. Those all would have been more efficient, i feel, than what they went for. In the end, I still love the last of us as a franchise and would still play whatever they put out next in this story, if they ever do. Expand

Melee combat is SO broken you can't dodge attacks and when you attack they block 90% of the time. And you don't put your arm around character's anymore when you're both using the same cover, in fact it pushes you away from cover and often gets you spotted. They rush everything in this game (even though it's long. I beat it in about 28-30 hours and it was a chore)and it doesn't carry any emotion like in the first one, they just go for shock value at the cost of character development. And don't even get me started on how broken the fight against Ellie in the theater is. It feels like they went " the first game was a masterpiece, how can we take that world and its character's and ruin it in every way just to piss off everyone who loves it". In the world there is a tendency to tell stories down to earth, that is to say raw and realistic, without crazy fantasies and in this game although the story is about a fictional world, the characters make human decisions.

The story unfolds and is told in a particular way that tries at times to excite the player, give him hope but other times he tries to confuse him and even make him make small reflections. Whether the story is good or not is a matter of taste (like the colors) but the quality of the narrative is surprising.

The spontaneous and engaging gameplay is unprecedented. Each fight, each escape, each murder feels like a choice of its own that at the end of each scene makes us think back and tell ourselves if we did it right, if we did it wrong or if it was just the only thing we could do.

The progression in weapons and abilities is an aspect that in my point of view only exists to accompany the combat, it frivolizes the gameplay a little, sometimes diverting our attention from the main plot. And it is that this mechanic even serves as a tool to decrease tension in situations where it is necessary to lower a few decibels.

In technical aspects I think that it is not necessary to say much, the game enters through the eyes in a phenomenal way and although the first thing we can think about is, if the game has good narrative and good mechanics, the graphics are not important! but, in this case, they are! Each place tells a story that thanks to the visual quality of the game becomes more interesting. There are scenarios that are nice to visit for the simple fact of how they look. The facial expressions of the characters, the animations, the enemies, the zombies absolutely everything has a sickly level of detail.

Another aspect to highlight is the sound. The music accompanies each scene in an incredible way and the ambient sounds and the characters are taken care of in detail so as not to be out of tune with the climate of tension or tranquility in which we are.

There are no direct comparisons for this game so it is impossible to measure it comparatively with others and it is precisely this that makes the score of this analysis a 10.

As an extra I think it is necessary to say that the personal aspects of the characters (such as gender) do not appear fiercely, this has a small background, and although in the audiovisual industry there are examples of the use of these themes to simply earn money with what It is on everyone's lips, this is not the case, the narrative is well cared for so that does not happen.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

First off, I would give this game a 5 but that's considered "mixed". I am not "mixed" about the game, I know its not as good as "professional" reviewers say.

I knew since Left Behind DLC that Ellie was gay and had absolutely no problem with that. That dlc was fantastic! With that out of the way, without spoiling the story, this is why I believe the game just doesn't hit the right mark.

    Pros:
    Graphics are fantastic!
Technically one of the best. The detail in character animations is amazing, Abby has a fear of heights, try standing near a high ledge and see what happens. That's the kind of detail Naughty Dog has perfected.
Acting, the people programming the game, all brought their A game.

    Cons:
Levels drag on for far too long. While the gameplay has it's moments, it gets repetitive as new enemies appear like ninjas and for the most part you can run past them even on survivor mode, it just takes a few tries. Puzzles are also incredibly easy, if you are stuck, the main solution is to "look up".
Characters are forgettable and contain no unique traits other than their gender. Ellie likes to draw and play music, her girlfriend, Dina, is Jewish... that's the end of her character and all other side characters follow the same path. There are two other characters which are much more interesting unfortunately they come late into the game and don't really play into the main story.

    Story:
I will not spoil the story but know that it's about character loss and revenge. It concentrates way more on love triangles than it does on the infected. In fact, by the end of the game, I noticed the infected were part of the game but not the story. Not once were the Infected the main problem, they were used as an obstacle to tell a much darker "Life is strange" story.
The pacing was also incredibly awful. They should have delayed the game to rearrange the chapters so that you have a chance to get to know some characters before the story hits its climax.

This game was such a waste of great talent. And I feel it was written for a particular group rather than for the masses and even though it tries to be diverse it forgets that individuality is a special thing. For example, there are huge 6ft bruisers in the game, both men and women. All they did character swap character models so it's the same enemy. I don't think they know how rare a bulking 6ft woman is. Instead of doing that, maybe have women be more sneaky and maneuverable, maybe even have them in camo while they hunt us down. But instead it denies the uniqueness of a person to deliver a message.

As a final note, I ignored spoilers and leaks for the game. All the hate I heard, I ignored it. I spent my own money, bought it digitally, and gave it the benefit of the doubt cause I think Naughty Dog is awesome and they never let me down when it came to their games. Unfortunately, that didn't help with my enjoyment of the game. It wasn't just the story but the outdated gameplay, with the completely unnecessary jump button, the way it artificially slowed down the game with safes and locked doors.
I really wanted everyone to be wrong about this game.... I really tried to like it....

And they just go wild and stupid. Saying or doing stupid things, like review bashing here, for no valuable reason.
I just finished the game right now, and I can't understand how people say the narrative sucked. It just perfectly fits the purpose of it, meaning dealing with forgiveness, vengeance, wars, miscommunication, on different scales. Nations, groups of people, individuals... This game indeed is sad, cause nothing goes unpunished, even for Joel, Ellie and Tommy, and that's the way the world is. Naturally.
Go buy and play this game at any cost : it's just one big masterpiece once you're able to understand it, not wasting your time with complaining when the game's plot does not match your naive expectations, or when two girls kiss each other and you're frustrated about people loving each other. This game is clearly not a Netflix **** Clearly not. Go play it again if you think so. You clearly didn't get the density of it.

Much of this games controversy comes from a moment that happens early on, and whilst many may feel angry or confused with the devs decision, please carry on playing as all the questions you may have are answered perfectly through the course of the game. I am so glad that developers Naughty Dog chose not to play it safe and rehash the story from the first game and instead tell a story that they wanted to tell, a superb one at that. Obviously, too many snowflakes don't like this approach (the same people that complain when other developers or filmmakers don't come up with original ideas may I add) and would much rather have more of the same. Too me, this game is a must-play. It will make you laugh, cry, angry and sad but also will make feel satisfied in the end. It's visually stunning and plays like a dream. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was a big fan of TLOU1 so I’m disappointed with how TLOU2 has turned out. I will list my reasons for not liking this game.

    1. The game is many hours too long, and becomes repetitive and boring because of it.

    2. They make Joel and Tommy dumb, by having them go back with a stranger to meet more strangers. Then tell these strangers their names, their relation, where they live, invite them over, all to these complete strangers who are armed and outnumber them. Along with Joel and Tommy knowing Joel could be wanted because of what he did in TLOU1.

    3. The game tries to tell you Abby is nice and empathetic in her flashback scenes, yet when she reaches Joel (chronologically after the game tells you she’s nice) he saves her. She then proceeds to shoot him, and then violently beat him to death with a golf club, even in front of Ellie. Abby was also gonna kill Dina knowing that she was pregnant. So all this just invalidates what the game tried to tell us about Abby, and why we should like her.

    4. We are forced to play as Abby (Joel’s killer) for half the game. Joel was a loved character, and the vicious death he got, and the literal spitting he got, along with making us play as his killer, is a huge disservice to what he was to fans.

    5. By the end, Ellie reaches Abby who is tied up. She cuts her down and let’s her walk to a boat, simply to then attempt to kill her then. Why not do it when she was tied up? They fight, and Abby bites off two of Ellie’s fingers. Ellie is close to killing Abby when she has a vision of Joel. No words of wisdom, just Joel playing a guitar. She then let’s Abby live and go. To me, that vision along with having her fingers bit off mere seconds ago, would of reignited Ellie’s anger, and made her follow through with killing Abby. But no. Ellie then heads home to find Dina gone, and she’s all alone. Abby got her revenge, saved her friend, and kept all body parts. While Ellie lost all her friends, Dina, Joel, her revenge, and her fingers. Tommy is also injured. You don’t feel satisfied, you don’t feel like you achieved anything at all. It’s just pointless.

I could talk about the DMCA abuse, double standard with risqué scenes, and manipulation with the trailers, but I’ll keep this about the game itself. So that’s it, very disappointed with a lot of things. The graphics and voice acting is good, but for me, there’s far too many issues for me to enjoy it. THE END

The level of detail in environmemts and facial expressions is outstanding as well. Now to platinum the game! Expand

Absolutely a garbage "game", and I use the word "game" loosely. It's just something to push an agenda upon us and our kids and the game itself is void of any good "gameplay" merits.
Stay AWAY from such a **** product. For your own sake and your kids'.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was so excited for this game, even with all the leaks; but I managed to ignore the leaks.... i wish I hadn't. I would have saved eighty bucks and a load of disappointment. Unlike the first game, this one made very little sense. I have no complaints about the gameplay; it built on the first one very well. I loved the parts with Ellie, Joel, Dina, Jesse.... but aside from that? Everything was a dumpster fire. Let's starts with the big one: Joel's death. I was not surprised by his death or upset about the gore, even though I questioned the logic of having Joel, a man who can sense an ambush from a mile away, mindlessly falling into Abby's simple minded trap. But I can live with that; no, what I don't understand is the structure of this. They try to make us hate Abby by having her brutally kill Joel, they have Ellie slaughter hundreds of people to get our revenge, and then....not take her revenge because of a brief memory of Joel? If they wanted us to want to forgo revenge, they had to do better than that.

And then after making us hate Abby, they try to make us sympathetic by forcing us to play as her and making hamfisted attempts to get us to sympathize with her. Sorry, Abby, I don't care that your dad is dead, because the game didn't me care about him! I don't care that you lost him because I don't care about you. If they wanted this narrative to be successful, the structure should have been overhauled-- things should have started from Abby's perspective so we grew to love and sympathize with her loss and plight. We should have had with her at the beginning, a taste of what we had in the first tlou with Ellie and Joel. But she has no development, and we're expected to feel terrible for her. Sorry, I don't. There's no bond between Abby and the player, and over the course of her narrative, all you can think of is how **** forced everything feels, and how desperate naughty dog is to get you to like her, like an ugly guy at prom. They give her cooler weapons , they make her nice to dogs, they make you watch a yak-inducing sex scene, they make her basically be Joel with less self awareness and endless amounts of unacknowledged hypocrisy. They make Ellie out of character so that you sympathize with her less--insulting Dina and calling her a burden--kicking a dog's corpse and saying 'stupid dogs'. The first reaction I can understand because of stress, but the second? What the **** were you thinking, ND? She straight up wouldn't do that, and your attempts to villainous her are idiotic.

This game gets a 1 instead of a zero because I loved the gameplay....but I'm so unbelievably disappointed i waited seven years for this nonsensical narrative.

The game play and graphics are amazing, there are a couple of parts i wish they had done differently, but i respect Naughty dogs choice of story direction. It's still an amazing gaming experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is one of the very few cases where the critic score is more accurate than the user score. Many of the user reviews were published without completing or even playing the game. The Last of Us part II is a worthy successor to the first game! The story is very emotionally heavy but it is handled masterfully. All the time and effort that Naughty Dog has put into this game is very apparent. Just like the first game, TLOU2 is the best looking game of this console generation. This is the first game that made me use the screenshot feature on my PS4 just because of how many beautiful scenes and vistas this game is packed with! Aside from how beautiful this game looks, the gameplay is also insanely polished and fun! There is a new level of verticality added to encounters that were borrowed from uncharted 4, and man does it allow for some high adrenaline skirmishes! Ellie is very fun to control and though she’s no powerhouse like Joel, who was able to overpower his foes due to his old man strength, her movements are very fluid and her survival skills show just how much she has grown since the first game! ***!SPOILER!***
In the world of The Last of Us, every action has repercussions and consequences. Though Joel’s actions at the end of the first game were done to save the life of the person he cared for more than anyone, these same actions also destroyed the life of someone else. When Abby takes revenge on Joel, she only sees him as a monster who deserved to die. She was so focused on getting revenge that she didn’t care about any of the ramifications and then Ellie is placed in the same situation when she seeks revenge on Abby. Both of these characters are fueled by vengeance over a lost loved one and it hurts, and even kills, all those around them. By the end of the game they have both lost so much because of their journey for revenge and if Ellie would have followed through then she would have become just like the monster we thought Abby was at the beginning of the game and this cycle of vengeance would have only continued. The only way Ellie was able to forgive Abby was because of her relationship with Joel. Seconds before she was about to kill Abby, Ellie remembers her final words to Joel in the conversation where she forgave him for what he did at the end of part 1. She knew that Joel wouldn’t want to see her this consumed by hate. This may not have been the story that everyone wanted but the Last of Us isn’t scared to be a grounded experience where we can lose people close to us in a matter of seconds. Just like in real life, no matter how you want things to go you can never control the future, but you can learn from experiences in the past and that is exactly what Ellie learns by the end of the game. Losing Joel felt like losing a father figure from our lives but that’s a real world experience that most of us will eventually go through. Ellie is Joel’s legacy and she became everything he could ask for as a father. Thank you Naughty Dog for all your hard work that you put into this game!

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
