The gameplay, graphics, music, atmosphere, were good but I would have preferred that they focused more on the story than on those things, the truth expected more from the story, having the first game as a reference, I think the second part stayed very short, I do not criticize that they have killed Joel the way they did, nor that Ellie has not killed Abby because she is part of her humanity that she still has or any justification they want to give her, even in my opinion she was very Well that they implemented the LGBT + community and all those things, I just think it deserved a better ending after all because of what happened and I think that is what most of the community wanted, it was a very crude ending and they still make us play with the "villain" of the story, I understanding that they wanted us to empathize with Abby, but if it is a sequel, we play it for Ellie and Joel, who are the characters with whom we had already become attached and playing with Abby the story becomes very heavy for the same reason that we came to play TLOU 2 for Ellie and Joel and they still make us fight with Ellie, which I see 0 sense. Honestly, I wasn’t a huge fan of the first. It was one of the first PS3 games I can remember buying. I kept waiting for some sort of transcendent moment to happen during my playthrough but one never did. Many others disagreed, and The Last of Us is now cited as among the best games of all time. At first I wasn’t planning on playing the sequel. However, after seeing the leaks, the excessive DMCA takedowns, and the controversy surrounding certain plot elements I was starting to get intrigued. Since there are no new movies coming out, The Last of Us Part II is the closest 2020 has to a proper summer blockbuster, so why wouldn’t I want to play the hot new game and give my take on it?

While the original was a relatively linear plotline, Part II has a considerably more complex narrative structure. On paper, the storyline is brilliant, as it asks us to consider the consequences of violence and the multiple sides to every story. What one person may see as justified is a heinous act in another person’s eyes. It asks us to look beyond mere notions of people being “good” or “evil”. However, the way in which the game goes about exploring this is suspect, to say the least. The story is leaden with so many flashbacks, parallel events, and perspective shifts that the story is at times difficult to follow and the pacing suffers. Since The Last of Us Part II can no longer rely on the shock of a new franchise, this kind of storytelling feels like trying to compensate for having to be a sequel. The only option is to go bigger, louder, messier, gorier, and raunchier, and not every idea is a good one. It’s also a hefty game in terms of its length, clocking in at anywhere from 25-30 hours. It’s by far the longest game Naughty Dog has ever made.

The Last of Us Part II does not offer a dramatic departure in gameplay from its predecessor, yet its tone and themes couldn’t be more different. Part II tells one of the medium’s most ambitious stories to date, but boy is it messy. It’s the messy and sprawling nature that makes it a fascinating game, though definitely not a masterpiece like most critics claim. It’s too deliberately imperfect and misshapen for that. It’s the kind of game that for better or worse will have people debating its story decisions for months, if not years to come, and it’s bound to be a cultural lightning rod given the lack of new movies coming this year.

Love and hate: two sides of the same coin.

The last off us parte 2 é um jogasso , a Sony acertou em cheio tanto em enredo quanto em gameplay e jogabilidade . Esqueci de fala mas os gráficos estão divinos até o momento esse game foi oque mais representou as expressões faciais dos personagens tão bem . Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played the first chapter in 2015. I bought this one on day 1. The game is truly unique in gameplay, graphics, lightning and story, and it's a pinnacle of this generation of consoles. I was waiting for this game A LOT and my expectations were very high (I bought the PS3 because of the original The Last of Us). Nonetheless, the game met my expectations. The only major problem that the game has is, in my opinion, HOW the story is told, and I mean the order and the pacing through which the game and the story present themselves. Sometimes, the tension and the pacing just drop down, interrupting a climax (for example when we switch from Ellie's point of view to Abby's). Moreover, I think that presenting both Abby's and Ellie's story chronologically by alternating and rotating between their points of views on a daily basis would have brought a greater experience and a deeper attachments to Abby's friends. Instead, in the way the game is presented, it's really hard to get attached to characters like Owen, for example, because we already know that Ellie is going to kill him in a few days. Apart from the pacing and the order the game is told, the game is a masterpiece and went for something completely different from the previous chapter, something that didn't please many users. I won't say what this game excels in, because we all already know. Oh, and I played the game twice and playing through Ellie's part the second time makes you understand better a lot of things, like for example, when WLF members are talking about searching for someone who escaped (which we know is Abby only after switching to Abby's part), or when WLF members talk about a sniper killing all their men (we know that sniper is Tommy only when we switch to Abby's part). This is another outcome of their narrative choice of telling first Ellie's point and view and THEN Abby's one. Expand

Ellie was disappointing as seeing that she never learned a lesson or realized that what she was doing is not what Joel would want her to do.
Have to say, the graphics and gameplay, (while not evolving from the first) were still incredible and fun to be a part of.

This is a game which you cannot watch on a Youtube/twitch stream, it needs to be played. I recently played through all 4 uncharted games, and replayed the last of us Part 1, to refresh my memory. I can honestly say Naughty dog has outdone themselves. I am sad to see the toxic culture of the gaming community base the quality of the game, on their beliefs on what is acceptable in society.

I did not rush through this game, it took me about 10 days to play, so after each session of playing I could actually digest what the hell had just happened, there remains alot to question in terms of the story line, but the biggest questions are answered, why, what when and who. I myself would love to see a third, heck even a fourth.

All in all, I recommend this game to those who seek to play it, and those who are familiar with story driven games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Minor spoilers. This is the first time I've ever given a game an official rating because I feel very strongly about this. I give the game a 5 because I feel the game does not deserve a 0 nor does it deserve a 10. Amazing gameplay and voice actors did such an amazing job with their characters. However, I couldn't help but feel so miserable playing through this story as I felt forced to feel a certain way about characters as the writers wanted. An example of this is the section with the dog that the player is forced to kill, then forced to fall in love with this dog and feel guilty for something I did not want to play through. I continued to play, hoping there would be a bone thrown for me having to endure this tragic tale but nothing of that sort ever happened. As sad as it is for me to say, I will not look forward to any game from Naughty Dog that involves the writers associated with this game. Expand

To quote, just because something is explained DOES NOT mean it is good storytelling...to top it all off they go out of their way to make you care about Abby (lol that never happens)...overall, very disappointed, massive step down from the first game....they literally have no idea what made the first game so special. Its been a long, long time since any piece of entertainment made me think about my own feelings in the way TLOU2 has. I can't say that I'll ever forgive Abby completely for what she did. But I can say that I understand her, and that I wished for her to overcome her pain. I think this story will grow on people over time as they come to terms with Joel's death. Like Ellie, we may not ever forgive those who have wronged us, but we can find a way to escape our own anger.

As expected from Naughty Dog, the game is a technical, artistic and audible masterpiece. Even though the PS5 is coming to us very soon, I expect that the bar set in this game will take a long time to raise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a mess from the very beginning. The way that Joel was killed was completely out of character and a spit in the face to anyone that completed the first game. I had a feeling going into this game that Joel would die, but it’s how he went out that is a sorry excuse for shock value. And the worst part is that this isn’t even the reason why most people including myself are upset. We all waited 7 years to play Ellie’s story only for it to be interrupted by a 10 hour sequence that disengages you from the plot in hopes of changing your already despicable view of the game’s worst character. Instead of embracing Abby’s point of view, I found myself cheering at any misfortune that came her way. The game tries so hard to make the player empathize with Abby and feel compassion for her but completely fails. Even by forcing you to save the life of two children, play fetch with dogs, and watch her lose all of her friends, I still wanted nothing more than for Abby to die at the end of the game. Which brings me to my final point... I almost could’ve forgiven every other mistake or missed opportunity in this absolute dump truck of a story. But when the ending finally arrives after 30 hours of a dragging narrative, Ellie’s choice to let Abby go ruins any last chance this game had. It left me feeling unsatisfied and wishing I had never even played it. Gameplay and graphics alone have never been able to carry a linear narrative game like this before and this is no exception. People don’t buy PlayStation exclusives looking for the best looking or feeling game ever. People buy PlayStation exclusives because they have always told an incredible story and given us characters that we feel a connection to. The Last of Us Part II not only didn’t do that, but actually diminished a little bit of that great reputation. I highly recommend people to not purchase this game as I think they will find it a journey of disappointment and dissatisfaction. Expand

There's a huge dissonance between gameplay and cutscenes that really make this story less believeable than the first.

Ellie, the main protagonist is fine with killing hundreds of people with no remorse or regrets during gameplay, but the moment a cutscene start... she feels regret? I'm sorry what about all the people you killed on your way there?
I had a hard time getting invested in that game, I pulled myself through it and regret wasting my time on it.

Please, save yourself these $60 and don't buy it digital or new, if you REALLY want to play it, buy it used for cheap.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imagine watching the original trilogy of Star Wars where you follow the story of Luke Skywalker all the way up till Cloud City where he has his first duel against Darth Vader, only to have the scene cut away as Luke and Darth Vader draws their lightsaber. Now imagine spending the next 12 hours watching the prequel trilogy before you're allowed to watch the duel unfold. This is what it feels like to play TLOU2.

The problem with TLOU2 is that it contains two stories but the game is only capable of telling half of each. When a game sells itself as a narrative-driven game the story is the crux of the game. No amount of great graphics and good gameplay can save a horribly broken story.

A story begins, and end with, its characters. In TLOU1 we are given the whole game to explore and develop the relationship between Joel and Ellie. It allows us enough time to understand the characters and connect with them on an emotional level. Not so for TLOU2. In TLOU2 we are given half the time to interact with two sets of characters from different POVs. The game did not give us time enough to care for any of the new characters. This is made abundantly clear when the crux of the game's story is told over 3 days of game-time, as opposed to the year we spent as Ellie and Joel in TLOU1. TLOU1 gave us plenty of idle dialogues between Ellie and Joel throughout the game while also providing us with meaningful interaction between the two characters in cutscenes. TLOU2 did not do justice to any of the relationships between the characters. Playing as Ellie, we never get to experience how she develops her relationship with Dina and Jesse. We as players are just told they're our new companions, with very few actual on-scene interactions that portrays their relationships in a meaningful way. On the other hand, while playing as Abby, the game keeps relying on flashbacks to tell us why we should care about these new characters but their execution just jars you out of the moment instead of keeping you in the moment. The end result is players are left wanting for a more fleshed-out relationships between all the characters.

Going into the more nitpicky bit, how did Ellie and Dina managed to setup their farm house in such a hostile environment? It is clear that the farmhouse isn't a 5 minute walk from Jackson since Tommy showed up with his backpack, implying there is quite a bit of travel involved to get to the house. What made even less sense was the house was left practically untouched upon Ellie's return. Someone who knows Dina lived could've asked to live in that sweet real estate since Dina decided to leave it. The alternative would be the house should've been overrun by clickers or occupied by some hostile bandits in the intervening time between Dina leaving and Ellie returning. How exactly did the house remain so pristine?

Another nitpicky bit I had issue with was who in their right mind would send and/or allow a pregnant woman to participate in combat? Never mind that the pregnant woman is the best doctor they have in a post-apocalypse world. Naysayers are gonna swarm in and say 'she wasn't sent on a combat mission' but that's just **** The moment they leave the safety of their base they are entering a hostile environment and are prepared for combat, or they wouldn't have armed themselves to the teeth. There were also a few instances were any normal pregnant woman not named Mel would've suffered a miscarriage if they were put in the exact same situation, but Mel being Mel, she is able to shrug off the inconvenient realities of being pregnant and just keep going.

The last nitpicky thing is the ending. The game tries to setup Ellie and Abby as two sides of the same coin, mirroring each other throughout the game. In their first encounter Abby let Ellie go because she had no idea who Ellie was, and this sets off Ellie's revenge quest. The second time they encounter each other Ellie has killed all of Abby's friends, and Abby again decides to let her go. The third time they meet Ellie was on the verge exacting her revenge, only to let Abby go at the very end. Since they are a mirror of each other, who is to say Abby won't later decide to come back and seek vengeance against Ellie for all her friends Ellie killed? Ellie had a nice life with Dina in the farmhouse and decides to throw it all away to pursue Abby. Abby, being a mirror of Ellie, could do the same thing seeing as she held onto her grudge against Joel for 4-ish years.

I don't understand the unwarranted responses of gamers when talking about the game. Something better written such as Dina dying or Joel being kidnapped for torture and evidently getting bit in escape, would of been beautiful irony as Joel is the reason for no cure?

Two opposite perceptions were a mistake as there are always good people on both sides of war. This has overall disregarded how it would impact the fans of TLOU 1, by building a sequel that is fit for the critics & those less invested in the existing characters. I think they should retell the story again, as I wonder how many people would choose a different fate for Joel & Abby if given the option to the player. Where there no red flags to avoid this line of story and provide a game that everyone would enjoy! Especially as Neil Druckmann cited “The game will be diverse and not for everyone”?

The story should have reflected what was shown & perceived in the trailer, this would of made a more fulfilling & wholesome game for all, instead of this being tainted with a 50/50 split due to the objectives to please a completely different crowd. Ellie would have been the key to seeing both sides of the story

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a fan of the first game, this has to be the most disappointing sequel I have ever played.
This story uses the nostalgia of the first game to set an emotional tone for a story which has no relation to the first. Despite seeming to presume Joel was morally wrong at the end of the first game (which I do not!) the vaccine or cure has no impact on events, much like everything else from the first game. Instead, the new character of Abby, has the whole first game shoved as a simple backdrop to her motivations, and is desperately painted as a sympathetic character. Not only does her child murdering father save a zebra (awww) but she likes dogs too (awwwwwwww), but none of this is going to make anyone who liked Joel, think this justifies his murder. The murder, in trying to be gritty, misses key story telling and character opportunities, and signals the poorly thought out story which continues for far too long into this game. The story, a fumbled attempt at a 'revenge is bad' story, fails to understand human nature, basic philosophy (let alone theology) and so unwittingly spirals into a nihilistic mess, which by its very definition leaves you with nothing of true meaning at the end. The story of the first game had both strong male and female characters, the sequel discards both and finishes with nothing. Even Dina, introduced in the original's DLC, and seeming to have a strong role at the start of the sequel, is ploughed over by the Abby narrative, underdeveloped until she quietly leaves unseen. The game tries instead to make you care about a new cast of cliched and shallow characters. A pregnant fighter, an aquarium loving simp, faceless people who now all have names, but no personality are what we are given. It seems the apocalyptic world lacks its vikings, genghis khans, and bundys. That might be a bit dark for a game? Maybe, but that is precisely the tone this game thinks it is giving, but in truth shows a very shallow understanding of... well anything. The clickers, surely the best part, are thrown in from time to time, but are seperate from meaningful attachment to story.
The game play is disappointingly similar to the original, and the added stealth and jumping make very little difference (when people are cheering rope physics, alarm bells should ring!). The game does have its great moments and the graphics are very good (although overrated). These two points would give it a higher rating, 4/10 maybe, but what took away from my enjoyment of the game while playing let alone replayability, was the accusations online from journalists and developers themselves that I had not played the game, or was prejudice, or was a russian asset. Followed by the striking down of reviews online, in order to push the game, and the false advertising from the trailers, which had me pre-order (Do you think I'd let you do this alone?....yes, you're dead, I am doing the next 30 hours without you). The 10/10 reviews are ridiculous, and have signalled the death of gaming journalism . On top of that Niel Druckmann is just insufferable, and his narrow minded conceited tweets have not only put me off this game but also the original and any sequel planned. It will be interesting to see if metacritic remove this review or not. The reviews reflect a very angry fanbase, and lack of understanding, let alone sympathy, will be the downfall of Naughty Dog. Many of the fans fawning over it as a 10/10, I can only assume never understood the first game properly. Instead they are fair weather fans, applauding (or crying over) whatever new release they can join the club of, and tossing the old one to the side.
If Sony and Naughty Dog do not view this as a disastrous step for them, both in terms of the game, and how they have handled criticism/marketing, then their future will come crashing down as the destroy all the franchises they worked hard to build, and the old fans will cheer and the fair weather fans will already have moved on.
    0/10

Finally, play the guitar left handed you idiot, or play it 3 fingered like Django Reinhardt (The World Famous 3 fingered guitarist!!)!! This 'poignant' ending is shockingly dumb, nihilistic, and rather pathetic. If you want a good story about revenge and its effects, read the Count of Monte Cristo.

The only thing The Last of Us Part 2 has going for it is the beautiful visuals and the decent game play. However, between the poor pacing of the story and the vanilla revenge story told through gaming's most controversial video game character of 2020, it fails to live up to anything else. The narrative was written poorly with the constant flashbacks and disappointingly, the main feature from the first game which was the bond of characters and the overarching story is completely chucked out of the window. Overall, Naughty Dog has produced something which seems to be taken straight out of a fan fiction and given life to it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would like to say it's almost been 2 weeks since I completed The Last of Us Part II. This is one of those games that you can't get out of your head and I have to say it truly stays there. This is Naughty Dogs post ambitious game ever and you can tell by the story decisions that are implemented into the game. I heard of one of the leaks beforehand and was so disgusted by what I saw, I almost didn't buy the game but I'm glad I gave it chance because it's not as bad as the leaks show it. Now for the big dead elephant in the room, Joel. When I saw Joel's death in the leaks I was so heartbroken and literally couldn't handle the truth of my second favorite game characters dying like that (first being Arthur Morgan). When I played the game I felt the hate go through my body and wanted Abby to die so badly. i understand this is controversial but I loved Ellie's arch in this game becoming into this killer. It showed how when Joel is removed in her life, she isn't the same person and the way the arch was implemented was pretty interesting in my opinion. I gotta admit when the middle happened, I was ready to kill Abby right there and then but then we switch to Abby's side. We get to see Abby's arch as the clock rewinds and we learn her side of the story plus why she had ambitions of killing Joel. Then as soon as you play more with her, you start to feel bad for her and kinda understand where she comes from. I have to say it's bold to make us play as the villain but that isn't true, there are no villains in The Last of Us universe because everyone is just trying to survive this world. It felt like Ellie's arch was Uncharted 4 has she has a goal and is trying to pursue it then Abby's is The Last of Us as Abby and Lev kinda like Joel and Ellie in the first game (gotta admit wasn't as strong as the iconic duo of Joel and Ellie). Then when it reaches the point of both characters trying to kill each other, I had a hard time trying to beat up Ellie but you saw Abby humanize sparing Ellie. As Ellie lives a better life after that with her lover, Dina you see she hasn't humanized and still has that killer inside of her as she can't fill the hole Abby created by taking away Joel. So Ellie goes to kill Abby and then the ultimate climax happens when both characters try to kill each other. I have to admit I wanted the pain of these two characters to stop and I have to admit in my opinion the ending was good as Ellie spares Abby by seeing a memory of herself forgiving Joel. The story was never about revenge, it was forgiveness and what it means to be human. That's when Ellie humanized. As Ellie goes back to her house she saw Dina had disappeared with her child with everything except Ellie's things. Then Ellie tries to play the guitar but has trouble playing it as she lost her fingers in the battle against Abby. Then you get that memory of her forgiving Joel and how that was stolen from her life, it almost gave me tears seeing that. Then it switches back to Ellie's normal life and sets the guitar then leaving the house seeing what happens in her journey. She ended up alone as that was her biggest fear. This game is bold and I didn't talk about everything because the game is so long. The Ellie and Joel flashbacks were one of the best parts of the game, those itself would be considered 10/10 for me. Overall the story was a 9/10 for me, it did have flaws but when I was open-minded I saw the game was truly something unique I've never seen before and I have to give them credit for that. Onto other things, the gameplay is excellent, it's super fun playing as both characters and trying to do amazing stunts with human factions plus infected. The graphics are by far one of the best a console can push, it is truly amazing looking at this game. The cinematography in this game is so breathtaking as you soak in everything this world has to offer, even though it wasn't open world, it looked massive. The music in this game I wonder consider to be better than the first. As actions kicks in the music set the tone and you actually feel like your there. Another thing not getting credit is the sound. My god, the sound is amazing, when you're on a boat hearing the water makes it feel like your really there. Everything in this game sounds amazing. All in all, I would give this game an 9/10. The narrative is thing that pushes the game and I enjoyed it more than other people. Everyone has their own opinion about this game and that should be respected. If you like or hate the game, don't bash others for that opinion. That is all I got and thank you for reading this! P.S I really recommend everyone to watch Girlfriend reviews and Nathan Zed's videos regarding The Last of Us Part II. Expand

If you were comparing the two games, this one completely misses the mark story wise. Yes there were some great flashback moments at the museum but that’s where the good parts end.

I feel they could have left Ellie and Joel’s story alone. There are tons of story arcs to explore. I had a more enjoyable time reading the notes from artifacts that I found.

I would have preferred them make up characters and develop them rather than this half-baked story we got

Ellie’s revenge story is so bad it’s comical.
That’s it, she’s hell bent on revenge at any cost. No character development
    Plot holes
Returning characters seem very out of character

The game isn’t awful but it’s not great either, it’s just ok.

I mean graphics and psychics. All details, even the smallest worked out perfectly. Ok, let’s speak about plot and storyline. I don’t understand, why so many people think the story is boring and stupid. Perhaps because they didn’t understand all morality and meaning that Neil Druckmann wanted to convey to them. Game has a very deep morality. It wanted to show us, what revenge can do. Ellie lost her fat mily: Joel, Dina, Tommi and AJ. And that revenge Beersheba more revenge. That’s allbreeds more revenge. That’s all. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Enjoyed every single second from start to finish. Every single thing the developers set out to do with the story affected me in the way they had intended. Joel deserves the fate he was given, he was never a good guy. He had murdered and killed innocent people in the past and finally paid the price for his wrongdoings. I disliked playing as Abby at first, but once her reasonings were explained, I started to empathise with her, and by the ending I didn’t know who I wanted to die, I was probably leaning towards Abby killing Ellie, actually. I enjoyed the ending despite popular opinion. Ellie deserved to be alone after all the pain she caused everyone, seeking needless revenge for an act that was justified 10x over. even after murdering all of abbys friends, she still wasn’t satisfied. The last shot of her being unable to play guitar and realising that her last bit of connection with Joel was severed was heartbreaking and a good way to show her realising that seeking revenge caused her to lose everything. We don’t need a happy feel good ending all the time, and it seems like too many people struggle with empathy and things not turning out the way that they’d like. Phenomenal job in every single aspect of video game creation. I can’t stand scary games, but I couldn’t put this down because I was so obsessed. Music was incredible, combat was brutal, smooth and enjoyable. The graphics are the best I’ve ever seen and the attention to detail is unmatched. For anyone to give this anything under an 7 after experiencing the gameplay even with their moaning about the story is laughable. Expand

The Game part is outstanding. The story is bizarre and just a mess. All social justice stuff was also too prevalent.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game unintentionally gave players the most immersive experience of a zombie tragedy but not in the way it likely planned to. First, they showed us an ideal life where we were all excited to embrace the sequel and then allowed a zombie writing staff to infect the franchise by sticking its teeth into the arm of the fans via a golf club. However, even after this, I held hope we'd tie off the arm, chop it off, and be able to move on into a new story. What I got instead was a game where the infection spread so much that by mid-game I was playing a character who was an undead version of the protagonist and time-hopping like I was Doctor Who. They tried to make me care with every trick in the book but it couldn't stop it from feeling like I was in a failed marriage. All the joy was gone and all that was left with was an obligation to see it through since I already made the 59.99 commitment. Like I never thought a game would need a Synder cut much less something from Naughty Dog but seriously had they let you played it chronologically & mad a few revisions this could be an 8.5. Alas since the game felt so miserable I can only award it half the points for its graphics and the few parts I liked. I strongly recommend they review their prior titles to relearn what made them great. Things like filling the player with some sense of enjoyment other than just revenge porn & angsty guitar solos. Personally right after playing Last of Us 2 I replayed Uncharted 4 as a sort of cleanse and I'll say it still holds up so I'm confident you guys can do better next time. Just please keep the player in mind and remember to make it about being fun and not whatever else you're doing in the writer's room to intentionally disappoint *cough*, I mean subvert expectations. Before I start, I ask that you consider the opinions of others, at least with the audience reviews. Though many people provide something vague, misspelled, or generally unhelpful in their reviews for both the positive and negative, it should be taken into account that those who bought the game for the sole purpose of loving or hating it in such a hyperbolic way are in the vast minority. Most people are genuinely happy or frustrated, and though the June 19th reviews aren't a very good way to look at the whole of the game, they shouldn't be completely dismissed.

I made this account to give a lower score than I had given this game in my initial review. When I tried to log into my previous account, I couldn't reset my password, the website refused to load multiple times, and though I'm not going to start getting conspiratorial about the reasons, I was frustrated enough with nothing working that I decided to make another account to give a lower score than the 4 I first gave it.

I already thought the game was unenjoyable. I'd be okay with it not being fun, but outside of the game's visuals, audio, and some great setpieces that were scattered here and there, There's very little to appreciate.

The game seems to have fallen into the trap that a lot of entertainment I enjoyed until recently has: it puts too much emphasis on big narrative/thematic moments and not enough on what builds up to them. You can see that in The Last Jedi (and the ninth movie, but after it its predecessor so thoroughly derailed the trilogy, I can't help but at least commend JJ Abrams for the attempt), Suicide Squad, the 11th and 12th seasons of Doctor Who, the finale of Steven Universe, and from what I've heard, the 8th season of Game of Thrones. The game often hinges upon coincidence or contrivance, characters often make choices that seem to lack buildup or justification, and characters' personalities change drastically and without the player knowing why until it's too late for one's immersion. Like some of the aforementioned entertainment, many of this game's characters are uninteresting, and while the player is supposed to be invested in them via proximity to various protagonists, there are barely any characters that are interesting on their own.

While gameplay has been slightly expanded, it's almost dishonest to say that you have more options than before. The levels are more sprawling, and you have more freedom of movement, but levels are also way more confusing to navigate as a result. Stealthing through sections is nigh impossible on the first go, which forces you into combat unless you want to save scum. In the first game, combat felt raw, but in this one, it feels downright brutal. The ways that you kill people and their various companions are just as detailed as the landscapes, and the amount of violence made those sections awful to play. The only way I could go through with killing people in this game is by actively trying to de-immerse myself from those sections. A lot of the time, the only reason I kept playing was to see whether I'd like whatever came next. As stated before, I rarely did.

To compare this game to the first Last of Us (which I replayed to ensure I'm not relying on rose-tinted glasses), it's a far cry from the greatness of the original. The characters in the first game were believable and interesting, as were the environments. It was definitely bleak at times, but it was never enough to make me put down the controller and take a break. With this game, I had to frequently. I realize that the interactions between the characters were a massive part of what made the first game so great, because no interactions in this game come close.

All of that was a 4 to me. I said in my previous review that I would've given it a 5, but that I wanted my score to reflect my enjoyment of the game. This new score is half of that 4 because the game has continued to bring down my mood long after I put down the controller. Never have I played something so completely, agonizingly depressing that I still feel worse for a multitude of weeks after.

I hate wasting my time. After seeing livestreams of the ending chapter I couldn't bring myself to play, I feel like all the time I put into that game, all the emotions I felt or forced myself not to feel, all the times I've thought about it, all the times it's made me depressed, bitter, or disappointed, all of it has been a complete waste of my time. The worst part about this game is that it's not easy to outright hate. I'd rather say "screw this game, it completely sucks", and leave it at that. I really wish I could, but it's not something I can so easily dismiss. I wanted to love this game, and now I just wish that someone could convince me to like it.

    Here's hoping.

Story was very poorly written , has some shining moments but not enough. Gameplay was exactly the same as the first game but added jumping mechanic. Only great thing about the game is graphics. Beautiful game but that will not save its rating

Assuming the “shock” doesn’t turn you off in the first couple hours, the first 12-15 hours of the game are rather enjoyable. Great scenery. Fun gameplay, albeit repetitive and straightforward. The second 12-15 hours... unbearable. Has completely turned me off from anything from anyone involved going forward. Too many lies and blatant falsehoods.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

Gameplay was quite the same as the first game, and in my opinion I'm glad they didn't change much to it. It feels like you're continuing on from the first game which is great! The story will definitely divide players as some people expect a different ending for Joel and Ellie's adventure. I seriously recommend not having any expectations at all and instead look for life-changing symbolism throughout your playthrough. This game will absolutely change how you think about certain situations in real life. Prepare to get your mind blown and your eyes in tears. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
