Beautifully written, nuanced story that digs deeply into the complex characters and their motivations. The gameplay is slick and has so many accessibility options that it meets the needs of anyone who wants to play. It more than lived up to my high expectations, it broke my heart, it terrified me, and I loved it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've played it multiple times now and I'm certain. I hate the lack of control or choice in this game. And I dont like the story. The gameplay is short simple and even dumbed-down. The creators clearly had a story to tell and that's fine. I just didn't enjoy it. In the end it was a game and not the end of the world if everyone liked or enjoyed it but it was not worth my money in the end and I feel like I wasted a lot of time feeling bad while playing it. I dont care about any of the controversial things in the characters themselves I dont have a problem with different people and their ideas or how they live their lives. But my problem is not letting us have control over the final choice because I would have killed abby just because I put myself in the character when I play games and you could say that abby killed my Joel self and my Ellie self wanted to kill her and even my abby self couldn't avoid committing suicide repeatedly during her easy linear gameplay that soon feeds you items on the path you are on. It's almost like they didn't want you to ignore her and proceed directly to the end my first moments as abby I didn't do anything just let the scene take place with all the action going on and people on horse back trying to kill me I just sat there the game literally broke my desire to play. My first real enthusiastic act as abby was to plummet to my death repeatedly. I know a zero seems harsh like I should rate on story graphics gameplay etc. But I did and honestly the one thing in this game that makes it bad for me is bad enough to render all other positives null and void, let me kill abby. Ellie may know forgiveness but I dont care and still want her dead. Expand

It's because they are both awful people you have no sympathy for. The trans character murders a dog and the main character of the first game. And this is the protagonist??? In what works is that your "hero"?. The. There's the little girl from the first game that has become a lesbian for no reason other than to sjw virtue signal. Please keep your identity politics and girl/girl and man/man sex scenes out of my video games, thanks. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a brutal and dark game. I think it would be really difficult to make a revenge movie or game that was as ambitious as this was. They totally nailed it for me. I went from loving certain characters to hating them as well as hating some to loving them, in general I could just emphasis with how hard their lives had become. It was an emotional ride that often felt overwhelming but I’m so so happy I played it. Firstly, killing Joel was obviously something they put a lot of time and thought into and it gave us a base to explore stuff that’s definitely never been looked at in this way before. Revenge led everyone in a bad situation and we see how bad it is for everyone in the life’s of those that go after it.

The game looks so brilliant and real. The music and sound design makes you feel scared, sad and lonely in an insanely beautiful way. The places you go are unique and ridiculously detailed. The acting and the characters all do such an amazing job that now that I’m done with the game I miss them. The gameplay is very similar to the first game but has been tweaked to feel more smooth and impactful than the previous game. I like that Abby, Ellie and Joel all play differently and have different skills. The ending is depressing and dark but it fits the tone of the game perfectly. We don’t always get what we want and sometimes we miss opportunities when we are blinded by rage or something that’s become an obsession. This dark story telling mixed with social issues like the LGBTQ+ issues and identity issues were done in a cool way that didn’t feel like pandering.

This game is super ambitious piece of art that has to be played to the very end to get the full scope of its gritty beauty and deep emotional message that are difficult to process for me even now. Thank you Naughty Dog for another awesome experience.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. People who play Souls-Borne games are used to getting the middle finger and a "GiT GuD" when it comes to a difficulty setting. It's something of a hot topic recently (surprisingly) and it's something that people who were unable to overcome simply didn't like about the games. That being said those games are better for it and arguably could be ruined if ever implemented. TLOU2 another one of those games. There is a difficulty setting for game-play but there are no difficulty settings in this game or in real life for processing mental and emotional trauma. It seems like the majority of these reviews are from people having trouble at the latter. This is strange though because games like Hellblade and Celeste have done well on here.

Grief is a potent emotion that I would never wish on anyone. If not under control it will ravage someone, sometimes completely changing the person you thought you knew. This is something that is as hard to watch in real life as it is in this game. We saw what it turned Joel into in the first game but we never saw how. In movies you just have to watch as someone goes through this; in video-games you're in the drivers seat and you are far more exposed. This is where Naughty Dog shines and they do an immaculate job across the board. I felt the death of Joel hard, I felt Ellie's grief, I even felt Abby's grief but I didn't think I would be able to forgive her. There is one moment at the end of the game that is so easy to miss but hits so hard. As Ellie holds Abby's head under water trying to drown her she has a brief but powerful flashback. In this 2 second flashback Ellie remembers the very moment she was ready to forgive the only person besides Abby that took everything away from her. It's after this moment that Ellie realizes the is done and lets Abby go. Its not a happy ending and it was not something I would call fun, but rather fulfilling. TLOU starts as a story about curing all the zombies but changes at the very end with Joel murdering everyone in the hospital and ruining the chance of a cure. TLOU2 starts as a cliche murder revenge plot but ends up with Ellie ultimately letting everything go. In hindsight this is something we could have expected.

This is a must play game for me across the board with one caveat. Not everyone can handle losing a loved one, they may even play video-games to avoid this. If that is the case this game may not be for you. It doesn't make sense to buy a game after seeing the leaks and knowing you're not going to like it. Its the equivalent of going to a restaurant and ordering a salad even though you wanted a steak and writing a bad yelp review. It would seem there are a lot of Karens playing video-games nowadays.

It is very clearly shown around critics that people didn't like the idea of Joel dieing in this game. But in my opinion it was a reasonable thing to do, every other naughty dog game never killed of its protagonist and the protagonist friends/ allies but the killing of joel gave the game the impact it needed if for example they killed Dina like everyone thought they did (this is because of the trailers) the game wouldn't be as intresting and worthwhile to go through l. This also shows hoe Ellie lobes and cares for Joel if she didn't care about him she wouldn't of done everything she did to get revenge on Abby
Talking about Abby shes the other problem that people disliled about the game, yes i felt the same way when i had to spwmd about 1 hoirs of gameplau with her but it showed me her side of the stoey and how she feels and desires as a human. Overall the games ending is very hard to understand fully but it was the right choice to not kill of Abby and Lev. 10/10

Speaking of gameplay. Naughty Dog made an improvement in the gameplay, while Joel from TLOUS 1 was lethal at close encoenters but slow, Ellie its the opposite, the gameplay was improved making it better with the character, more agile but weak when its about close encoenters, you can go prone for get a better position, the NPC'S they really react like a person (or like they should) if some friend dies they get nervous and they'll go to the last position of his friend, to find out what it's going on...
Now speaking about the hot topic of this game... Mainly the hatred that is recieving the game its because the dirty decisión, making...(I can't give you any clue because if i do im spoiling the plot) was the begining and the damn trailer, but i can understand this decission if Naughty Dog didn't made this choice maybe we didn't sympathize with the reasons about the search of Ellie, but skiping this point... The story... Yeah it's cliche and everything you want to say but the development through Ellie it feels good, we see her growing up through the game and we can easily notice these changes and around her... If you liked the first one this game still for you, no matter what you heard it stills worth it

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I won't lie and say I'm the biggest Last of Us fan, that I 100% the game, got it early, etc. However what I will tell you is that it is a good game, the visuals and audio design are gorgeous, the developers added a much-needed coat of paint to the mechanics, it is a very solid base. However, the criticisms come with the story and characters.

I think what NaughtyDog did with the game is bold, killing one of the beloved characters and forcing the player to play as the character who killed them. I won't say I was happy with it, but I could also see that ND wanted to create the narrative that "every story has two sides" and ask that you consider the sympathy towards what Abby has gone through and how it parallel's Ellie's story. There has also been complaints that Ellie would never 'act the way she does' within the game, however, as someone who has watched a close family member die, her anger and spite are understandable and especially in such an uncut setting, it makes sense that she'd feel so strongly as to do what she does.

A lot of other reviews I've read seem to take the game too seriously as if Naughty dog promised them something and then snatched it away. It isn't like that, this game is a new chapter in an already developed story, Ellie is 20 by the end of the story, all she knows is pain and loss. This game isn't about wrapping up Ellie's story, it's showing the end of Ellie's journey and the result of what she has caused.

In my opinion, but it, I believe it is a 10/10 game; however people are right to say that this game is divisive, so I cannot guarantee you’ll form the same opinion of this game as I have. Review: The Last of us Part II is a masterpiece without saying. I believe that this game shines in many aspects, but the one aspect that I believe it shines in “and many others don’t” is the story. As much as this seems not to be the case, not only is the story a self constrained well written emotional rollercoaster, but in my opinion perfectly compliments the first game in almost every aspect, most of all seen through story. Let’s talk about the major turn off in the story first. Joel’s death, more importantly Joel’s death at the hands of Abby, a random women whom you don’t know off nor do you know her intentions until before you can even process it, has played a golf tournament whilst using Joel’s unfortunate head as the driving range. At this moment you will want to quit. I did to, at this moment you will understand the hate, until you don’t. Joel’s death was necessary in my opinion. In a revenge story you need to be ok terms with the character, and if Dina had died, well you would feel sad for Ellie, but you would feel that way yourself, but by killing Joel, in such a traumatic and realistic manner (on the basis that in the world of The Last of Us, you do not to go out like Iron Man), it makes you want revenge, not Ellie, you. Furthermore, you see and feel these effects throughout the game. When Ellie kills a pregnant lady, when Ellie looses everything, and here is where that perfect complimentary comes between part 1 and part 2. Ellie tells Sam that she’s scared of ending up alone, and she doesn’t want to loose everyone, and in part 2 that happens, but in the end. It’s her relationship with Joel that stops her from tipping over the edge, as she remembers that she forgave Joel for the fireflies lie, and so she forgives Abby. Speaking of. Playing as Abby was an amazing experience. Seeing the other side of the coin only conflicted me more into realising who here was the villain, only deepening the characters. Not only that but once agin giving part 1 a deeper meaning, being that Joel’s choice in the first game had consequences, his lie with Ellie, his wrong doing against Abby, and it all ties that together in the perfect sequel, that I believe is The Last of Us Part II Expand

And Abby being the saint is a hard point to sell even if you use devil's advocate. I liked it when I played for the first time giving it an 8 or a 9. After listening to the good reviews and bad reviews I've came to a conclusion this story is not the same direction as the last of us. This feels like a dark brutal story and just throwing Joel and Ellie in the mix and has a bleak experience. This makes batman v superman look like a kids play Revenge is bad is so played out.

Everyone who leaves a bad review of this game didn't get any of the themes that were presented.
Their poor ability to discern the bigger picture and the inability to connect and empathize with well written characters, left them hurt and unable to process their own feelings.

A score of a 5 and below is only merited when the game is fundamentally broken. This is game is a far far cry from any of that. It's a masterfully crafted cinematic masterpiece that you can interact with and again pushes the boundaries of the medium of video games farther into art.

Half of the morons that leaves these surface level reviews are mad about the "SJW agenda" naughty dog is "iNjEcTiNg iNtO My gAmEs" The other half couldn't get over Joel's death.

People bring up pacing a lot as their defense for hating this game while pacing a movie and pacing a game are entirely different things. They say that the game is a tired old revenge trope while all the endings and plot changes they suggest are literally the most cliched story tropes out there.

Main thing I want to say is that this game needs to be PLAYED by a critically thinking ADULT. It's an experience that needs to effect you. Without our initial connection to Joel and Ellie, it would NOT be possible to simulate trauma and put the player into Ellie shoes. Without Abby (whose gameplay parts are some of the best in all naughty dog games) We see Naughty Dog continuing on a grander theme of how in a world of brutality and survival no one can ever be completely ethically right. Joel in the eyes of many is a monster.
We don't value people when we consider them the enemy, we dehumanize people so that we can point the finger at them when things go to sh!t. The haters of this game act in the same way, blindly hating without realizing what the other side is like. They are angry over fictional characters that are being used to tell the bigger story of the world around them.

This game is amazing so don't listen to these rubes if you actually want to truly FEEL and EXPERIENCE something never before done in a video game.

The story was a great one, for me, is the representation of human emotions and their complexities, there is no bad or good pleople, just people that are in pain trying to figure out how to forget and forgive, through revenge, throught loss, maybe taking bad choices, but at last is a great game Expand

Objectively, It's not that bad as a lot of people here has rated, but I understand the disappointment, everybody expected a better experience than the first part but the story line worsened the masterpiece in terms of graphic, design and gameplay.

I loved the first Last of Us (and all the Uncharted games), so I knew that Naughty Dog was capable of publishing excellent games with good to great character stories intertwined. I pre-ordered TLOU2 a few days before it was to be released, and vaguely heard some of the controversy for the first time, but did not seek out any spoilers...and had no idea what I was in for (and nor did I want to know). I figure people that have worked on a story for 5+ years, probably deserve to have the entire store told by THEM, not some spoilsport tw*t on the internet...

So I avoided all spoilers until the game was preloaded on my PS4 Pro...and spent the next 5 evenings playing it completely through...AND...I actually played this game through to the very ending credits before I decided how I felt about it all...

I'm not sure if this review will resonate with the seemingly binary extremists that appear to comprise most the the "users" on this site...but for those of you that prefer to think beyond the hate-spasms of pre-pubescent emotionally crippled plebs...read on.

Before I react to the story which seems to dominate 90% of the reasoning behind most of these reviews, I do want to talk about the game mechanics and design. For me, a
AAA game's mechanics, interface, graphics and sound design are worth about 6 points out of the 10. And I have to give Naughty Dog 6 points here. The graphics, world design, music, atmospheric sound...all were just FLAWLESS. I thought the game mechanics and controls were near flawless...I rarely felt like the controls were unfair or caused me to lose a fight. I really enjoyed always worrying about not quite having enough materials...and it really encouraged me to look through everything in every corner for the extra alcohol or extra bullet. I enjoyed how running low or empty on one weapon's ammo meant I just had to change up my playstyle completely...it forced me to think laterally and out of the box and really made the survival much more tense. The enemy AI was scary (especially on the hardest level), but the companion AI was sometimes lame...I wish companions were more realistically visible to enemies and/or stayed out of sight so it didn't break immersion when enemies couldn't see them standing in front of them. I also wish the puzzles were a bit more thought-provoking and challenging. Overall, this game world looked and felt great!

    Now for the story...
As a fan of most post-apocalyptic stories, I think it's crazy that many of the dissenting fans of Part 2 somehow believed that their beloved characters were all going to live in the sequel. Have we learned nothing? The cordyceps infected world is a nasty one...rife with destruction, death, violence, and misery. Did we somehow think that a GAME set in a world where nearly everyone has either been killed, turned into mushroom monsters, or become part of a nihilistic militaristic cult...was going to feature Joel and Ellie dancing through sunshine soaked fields singing Kumbaya? Jesus, that's dumb.

The original game came out what, 7 years ago?...that means fans of the original are supposed to have MATURED SEVEN FREAKING YEARS...and somehow, some of these so called fans of the original game have, because one of their VIDEO GAME characters got killed...have debased themselves to sending hateful, misogynistic, anti-semitic, death threats to freaking VOICE ACTORS, as well as story directors and video game developers? OMG.

It's a "zombie" game set in a fictitious world for god's sake! CHARACTERS, which aren't real in case you forgot, are gonna die. It creates drama, which apparently you guys all love! I liked Joel as much as anyone, but come on...he's no angel! Maybe you remember the first game...in which JOEL and Ellie slaughtered their way all the way to Salt Lake City, literally leaving a trail of their murder victims behind them. Yes, I still liked their characters...but let's call a spade a spade...they killed a ton of people...ultimately for NO REASON. They killed sons and brothers and husbands and yes...even dads.

Killing people has consequences no matter how good your intentions or how "justified" your revenge may seem. And as much as I didn't like Abby at first, being forced to play as her was bold...and for ME...as an emotionally mature adult, was truly moving. I went from not liking Abby at all, to practically crying in the end, for BOTH Abby and Ellie...having lived through both their pain and having seen how all their hate and anger only led to the death of even more people they loved. I cried, and I cheered when Ellie finally understood (just as Abby had with Lev's help earlier)...the only way forward is to to let go. I'm a 40 year old man, and the ending made me cry. Not all stories can give us what we want! That's not life! Sometimes we get what we need...

Good graphics, nice music, respect to the developers team, respect to voice actors.... but the game play was somehow repetitive, the charisma of the main characters was killed off, the direction in which the story developed was disappointing, there were some major logical gaps... As a free time gamer and a big fan of the TLOU and DLC I feel betrayed by purposeful provoking of false expectations by trailers and marketing.., I preordered the game and did not watch the spoilers, but now regret it, should have bought the used version for a half of the price... it's sad that the ND decided to spit into the soul of the long time fans and now tries to make us feel guilty for not liking it. In a singleplayer game the main focus is the story, it affects 80% of the experience, graphics doest matter if the story is good, but when the story is this bad, there's something wrong, most bad reviews are rated as homophobic and anti-lgbt, but it's not the case here. This game is a **** show story-wise, so many flashbacks, even one inside another, they say revenge isn't Worth it, but how can you sell something that doesn't conclude itself in the manner it was sold in the first place? This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let’s start off with this: anyone who saw the leaks and formed an opinion of the game based primarily on that content should NOT be listened to when it comes to rating this game. People do not understand where Druckmann took the story because they were stuck in TLOU 1. But before I get into the why’s and how’s of this game, let’s talk about gameplay.

    GAMEPLAY
You will have anxiety attacks. The combat mechanics and refined and impactful. Your ammo runs out fast, the AI is smart, the environments are open-ended enough for ballsy trigger-fingers or sneaky ninjas. The infected are menacing, with a touch more humanity than the previous game. You really do have to think before you act. There are insane action scenes as well as soft, well-paced moments of carefully crafted exposition. GRAPHICS
    It’s Naughty Dog. CHARACTERS
This is where the game shined to me. Every character is three dimensional. Who is bad? Who is good? You can’t tell. That is the point. In the context of this tired, fungus-ridden post-apocalypse, there is no good and evil; there is people and the extent they’ll go to survive and protect. Ellie progresses through the story losing her humanity and becoming more like, you guessed it, Joel. Abby is a misunderstood victim: Joel took everything from her. The characters all put in what they need to, but they don’t necessarily get a “fair” send-off. And guess what: they shouldn’t. This world is not fair. NARRATIVE
This is the big one. The story is meant for people who understand the CONTEXT. The story is NOT meant for people who want a hero-based plot. Joel isn’t a hero. Ellie isn’t innocent. People were angry because Joel died the way he did. But they fail to realize that you as the player did the exact same things to others in the first game as they were done to Joel in this one. The idea is that even though Joel was presented as the GOOD GUY to us, that doesn’t make him the hero.

The story is meant to show the player one thing: perspective. This is why you WATCH Abby kill Joel, and THEN play through her flashback. It is meant to challenge you. Apparently, we as gamers have not evolved past the “shoot and run” mentality of video games. Apparently, few of us can understand Naughty Dog’s vision. If you are thinking about getting this game, or if you are unsure of what to think now that you’ve reached the credits, look at it this way: there is absolutely nothing that this world owes to you. Do not play this game if all you can fathom in video games is a black and white hero story. This is meant to question your belief, it is meant to make you uncomfortable.

The gameplay and the graphics are the best the series has seen, which is why the disappointment of the story is so frustrating. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As much as I would like to give this game a zero, I'm going to be objective about this. FYI, I played the game to completion - Platinumed it even, so I have every right to criticize it as I've seen everything it has to offer. In short, this game is a far cry from the masterpiece that is its predecessor. They tear away everything you loved about the first game and shove some new, twisted narrative in your face that just doesn't resonate. The story is just waaaaay too far off base from the first one and here's why:
    1. They absolutely DISGRACE the characters. Joel is just treated like a **** and killed within the first two hours. The guy you literally spend the majority of the game playing as in TLOU1. This is a huge mistake because he should've lasted at least half-way through the game, as it's the moments between him and Ellie that really make TLOU. I was expecting him to die, but not like that. He deserved a somber, heroic death. Probably protecting Ellie or something like that — but if only his death made logical sense! You’re telling me by pure chance he finds Abby, and then he and Tommy walk into a room full of strangers, unarmed, and proceed to disclose their real names and where they’re from? Who does that?! Especially when you consider how on edge Joel was in the first game - you can’t trust anyone in this world. There’s also Jessie who we all got to like then he was just shot in the face out of nowhere, and before we could internalize it - BOOM flashback. We never really get to go back and see the characters remorse about Jesse. I feel he was only included as a catalyst for the story in getting Dina pregnant.
    2. The latter half of the game sucks. The story comes to a screeching halt when Abby finds Ellie and the gang, then you have to wait like 8-10 **** hours to continue the present day story. What's most infuriating is most of Abby's segment is irrelevant. Who cares about Yara and Lev? Seriously? They just show up out of nowhere and we're forced to start liking them. And the stupid romance with Owen, Jesus. It feels really forced how much they’e trying to get you to empathize with these new characters when all you want is to see more of Joel and Ellie. It doesn’t help when you remember that these are the ones that brutally murdered your favorite character. Joel saved Abby's life and she still proceeded to torture him like that never happened. She's irredeemable and empathizing with her is a very hard pill to swallow.
    3. The ending is blasphemy. You're telling me Ellie comes all this way, and instead of finishing things, she lets Joel's murderer go? **** Heresy! I played through this entire game with the intention of avenging Joel. Joel would’ve burned down the world for Ellie had she been the one who died, and Ellie wouldn’t kill the person who caused her so much suffering? The ending is so dissatisfying and ultimately teaches you nothing. It renders the entire journey pointless.
If I had to rate the story alone, I'd give it a 3/10. I absolutely hated it.
It's not all bad though. Here's what I loved about the game (this is where most of the points come from):
The flashback scenes with Joel and Ellie are fantastic, and they really show what kind of potential this game had if they just continued focusing on these two. As triggered as I was with Joel's death, I was buying into the story and the "revenge quest," but man they broke my confinement when they started beating me to death with how prevalent Abby was. The graphics and gameplay are truly exceptional. This is without a doubt the best looking game on PS4 and the gameplay is much more refined from the first game. It's by no means revolutionary, it's enhanced but more of the same. That's perfectly fine though, because I loved the combat from the first game and wasn't expecting them to change it.
Ultimately, TLOU2 is just a huge disappointment. This game had so much potential if they just stuck to what this series is actually about - Joel and Ellie. It's most infuriating when you recall that the marketing was all manipulated to get you to believe Joel and Ellie would be the center of the story when that couldn't be farther from the truth. If I'm being honest, this felt more like Abby's game than Ellie's, which is ridiculous when you consider that this was being sold as Ellie's game. They even lied two years ago when they said that she would be the only playable character.
To conclude, I would highly advise against buying this game new. Do not support Sony financially, because that just means you're happy with what they did. I recommend either just watching the cinematics online or buying it used (which is what I did because I refuse to support this). There are things to enjoy, but it's not even close to be considered a good game. It's painfully mediocre which is unacceptable when you realize that this is a sequel to one of the most heralded games of all time. I can't believe we waited seven years for this.

But as I continued to play I understood that this game deals with dark and gloomy themes that can be uncomfortable to its audience. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is everything I wanted and more. This review will not do the game justice so as a warning please play the game yourself before you read. I tried controlling my excitement as much as possible for the game since I didn’t want to be let down. As a fan of the first game I thought it was important to manage my expectations. I also happen to be one of the people who think the first game had a perfect ending and that game didn’t need a sequel. But after playing this game, oh am I glad they made one. Starting with the aesthetic. The graphics are probably the best I’ve ever seen in any game. I mean it’s expected though, it’s a 2020 game after all and on top of that it’s naughty dog a development team known for their amazing graphics. I also love the film grain, some people don’t even notice it but it gives the game a sort of gritty look which I like. The environments are lush and beautiful as they help give you a feel of the last of us world. And the music, Gustavo Santaolalla tops himself from the first game as the music is even better and honestly this is probably the best soundtrack in a video game and better than some movie soundtracks. I realize how much of a fanboy I’m sounding like but this game is just that good. The gameplay is great. If you like the gameplay in the first last of us, you’ll like it in here as well. It’s not pushing the boundaries of gaming or any thing but it’s perfect for the game. It gives you a feeling of intensity that many other games can’t do. And on top of that it’s smooth, fluid, and fun! There are always dozens of ways you can approach an encounter which adds to the fun and replay ability of the game. Finally let’s talk about the story. The game opens very sombrely and evokes the emotions right away. It’s important to catch up on the first game or you may not feel all of these things. The soberness fades right away as the game kills off Joel right away. People who critique this simply don’t understand what the game was trying to do. This happens to make you feel a certain way. People wanted a clean death for Joel where they feel the loss but the game does that at the end when it wraps things up. You feel an abundance of emotions including anger, confusion, and sadness. If you feel these things, then the game has done its job by putting you in Ellie’s shoes. These feelings drive the rest of the game as you seek revenge which you yourself want since they killed your beloved character. The game takes you on a roller coaster which I can’t get into it all but it’s amazing. Characters like Dina and Jesse have amazing chemistry with Ellie and they’re likeable so you care about them. The acting by the way is phenomenal, again probably the best in a video game. The game then takes a huge risk and makes you play as Abby the person who killed Joel. They make you empathize with her which you would think is an impossible task given the context. And they just pull it all off. With uncomfortable encounters like fighting Ellie as Abby, to heartbreaking scenes like the whole farm sequence. To the final death wish as you play as Ellie at the end it’s an amazing experience which may not work for some people which is okay, the game is meant to be divisive. But for me it worked. Especially the ending with her decision to let Abby go. This ties in to the heartbreaking flashbacks which are some of the best moments in the game with Joel and Ellie. Ellie finally says she would like to try and forgive Joel and just that alone gets Joel teared up, as well as me. So if she could forgive Joel for that then she could respect him and be better than him by letting Abby go. These themes of love, hate, forgiveness are some of the things that make this game great. All of these things are what makes this game great and although it is flawed like any other game, the great things are so great that they make the game perfect for me. Great job naughty dog! Expand

For me to get into why this game is so divisive, I would have to spoil it, so I will not do that here. The short of it is that the game hurts to play sometimes; it makes you do things you don't want to do. But that's the point, and I actually think it works to tremendous effect.

Some people just wanted to play an extension of the first game. I get it, that game was a masterpiece. The thing is, I think the choices they made make this game a masterpiece too. If there is one critique I have, it's that, even though it is a 10/10 for me, it is so dark and emotionally challenging (even more than the first game) that it loses some replay value. But it is still a masterpiece that I will be thinking about for years to come. Naughty Dog is truly pushing the limits of gaming.

The people who don't like this game certainly are not taking issue with the gameplay, graphics, music, and level design. In every way except potentially one, this game is far superior to Last of Us Part 1. The level design in particular is far less linear than the first game, and in that sense the replay value is actually much greater. The music somehow takes a step up from the first game too. While the emotional guitar themes are still present, this game adds a Hans Zimmer style soundtrack for those truly epic moments. Not to mention the graphics are truly top notch.

But that leaves the one way in which Last of Us 1 could arguably be better. What people really loved about Last of Us 1 was the story and the complex characters. This game will live or die by what you think of the story and the characters (which I have combined into one thing here because the story is really about the characters).

For me, the characters are every bit as good as in the original. There are some truly emotional moments on par with Ellie's speech to Joel in the original (you know the one). There are moments where you can't help but smile, moments where you may cry, and moments where you will certainly gasp. Few games can inspire these reactions like Last of Us 1 and 2. The story is dark, but it puts most Hollywood movies to shame. It will leave you thinking about it for weeks, maybe years.

If you're on the fence about this game, give it a try. You'll either hate it or think it is a masterpiece, like I do. I applaud Naughty Dog for challenging the conventions of gaming, and not just to be different. I truly believe they challenge conventions here because the first game challenged conventions with its dark tone and conflicted ending. This game is bold because it decides to be different when they could have played it safe and cashed checks for years to come. But the spirit of the first game is still present in this one. If every fan got exactly what they wanted, I'm not sure the spirit of the first game would be there. I'm glad Naughty Dog took this chance, and I hope they are not deterred from doing so again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I bought the original 'story driven' game The Last of Us, when it first came out on PS3, and absolutely loved it, playing it over and over again. So much so, I bought it again for PS4. I loved all the main story characters, Tess, Marlene, Bill, Tommy, Maria, Sam, Henry, all interesting, diverse, strong characters, but the dynamic of Joel and Ellie's relationship, their backgrounds, their personalities and the close bond they had at the end of the story just blew me away.

I watched the E3 trailer, and every one that came after, looking forward to another fantastic story with these two characters, and was sadly disappointed.

I'm giving this game a 5/10, because I buy video games for the same reason I buy books, to escape from a world that never let's you catch a breath, before pushing other people's ideals and agendas at you, and that is exactly what this game does. I've read articles defending the developer/director, stating that this is art and an artist has the right to make what they choose to make, I disagree, it isn't just art, there are certainly elements, but nobody would buy a piece of art, without seeing it first and ND denied us access to this with embargos, strikes, false advertising, lies and dishonesty and worse than all of that a complete disrespect toward the gamers who bought and loved the first game.

What's good (for me personally) : Gameplay engaging in stealth areas, new infected enemies genuinely creepy, great graphics, flashbacks with Joel and Ellie, new characters Jesse and Dina.. Oh and Manny's death, that's for the spitting.

What's bad (where to start) : Messy time lines, too many glitches, bad characters Mel, Owen, Abby, Manny, Lev and sister (can't remember her name), all with no character/complexity, all one dimensional. Seriously unsubtle agenda pushing (we have brains ND), character assassinations from previous game, backtracking on established lore from previous GAME (because it doesn't suit your AGENDA) Some bad voice acting, plot holes galore ( this was in the 1st game too, YOU CAN'T HAVE A VACCINE FOR A DISEASE CAUSED BY A FUNGUS!!! The dogs are irritating (attack dogs are not cute, yes I killed them because they're not real, besides I'm a cat person). Abby wouldn't exist at that size in a post apocalyptic world, the surgeon at the end of the first game was old, Abby's dad appears to be in his late 30's early forties which wouldn't make him old enough to have been qualified as a doctor nevermind a surgeon ( as well as the only person capable of making a 'vaccine'

The gameplay was amazing, the graphics were out of this world, the environment and setting were very appropriate and did an amazing job of pulling me in and making me feel what the character should be feeling also. Anyone who thinks the visuals, gameplay, loading times, etc. deserve anything less than a 5 is, in my opinion, letting their anger about the game's story direction cloud their judgement.
One aspect of the game I especially appreciated was the small open-world section that NaughtyDog put into the game when Dina and Ellie first arrive in Seattle. It was fun to have a map with different areas marked and optional areas for me to explore and loot, it was a refreshing addition to games that are traditionally more linear from this studio.
The environment and interactions with the infected were genuinely terrifying at times. Crawling slowly through the dark and straining to catch even a glimpse of the stalkers as they silently snuck up on you, doubling back through the hospital to find doors that used to be closed now smashed open and knowing something terrible is waiting for you in the dark, crawling through the grass in a dark park and seeing people stalking closer and closer, all these scenes gave me a serious thrill and I thoroughly enjoyed playing through the game.
Lastly, the story. To qualify my score and my feelings, I played The Last of Us for the first time maybe a month ago, so I don't have 7 years of replays and discussions and game awards and history with the first game to have built up an attachment to these characters. I'm a newcomer to the series, fwiw.
That said, I really did like the story. I think the game did drag on for way too long and there were plenty of places I felt it could have skipped and the game would have been long enough still. Joel dying was of course upsetting and all the way through Ellie's first 1/3 of the game I genuinely wanted to find and kill Abby for what she did. Playing as Abby for as long as I had to was unexpected and by the end, I was able to understand her pain better and even if I still didn't like her, I didn't have the same hatred towards her. I think that was a big part of the point: seeing things from your own one-sided perspective only serves to dehumanize your enemy and keeps you from truly understanding and makes it easier to hurt and kill them. The game continuously made me understand and begin to sympathize with different groups until by the end, I didn't hate anyone and didn't want to kill anyone (aside from the Rattlers, they can go to hell) even if I didn't agree with what they were doing or why. In the end, both Abby and Ellie held onto anger and hatred for so long that they lost the people they loved, they were reduced to depraved acts of violence, they had to watch the people they loved die, and they barely survived themselves. Neither is the hero in this story, this is a story without heroes. Instead, it's a story about people and how we can let emotions and trauma take such a hold in our lives that it makes us toxic and we end up ruining everything around us. The story wasn't executed perfectly and there were some genuinely bad parts of it (the sex scene was really, really bad), but I found the game to be really enjoyable and a story worth experiencing.

While part II didnt manage to surpass part I in narrative quality, it certianly presents one of the most emotional and gut wrenching experiences you can get from a video game. It is a bold move to put the player in the shoes of the killer of a beloved character, but by the time the story comes to an end it becomes apparent what a brilliant and powerful move this was. If you gave this game the chance it deserved (which most negative reviewers definately did not, especially not the ones who somehow managed to put out a review on the same day the game was released, meaning they probably didnt play it at all), you will undoubtedly experience a brave, heartfelt and thoughful roller-coaster ride. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a massive fan of the first game, I will admit that the plot elements are challenging at first. Spoiler alert, losing major characters is a tough experience. However when you look at the grand scheme of things, I think the game is a magnificent experience when analyzing grief, loss, rage, and the toxic nature of revenge. I don’t penalize or judge a game based on the sexuality, gender, racial or ethnic makeup of characters. I don’t glorify either if it has a diversity of them. I simply look at a game and try to assess, from beginning to end, it’s quality as an experience, a character study, and as a overall story. In terms of gameplay, Part 2 has made drastic improvements compared to its predecessor. While some of the mechanics are not perfect, they still serve to improve upon the previous entry. I will level with you: the story is incredibly grim and to be honest, I would need to take a break every hour or so because I felt that the game’s events are pretty jolting, especially during the Ellie portion. I know a lot of users don’t like the shift in the game from its first and second part in terms of who the protagonist is. I actually find that to be pretty innovative and I think through that section of the game you understand it’s over arching theme as well as the political and human environment you play in. I would definitely give this game a try and form your own opinion. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us Part 2 was an emotional game for me, that took me on one hell of a journey full of tragic events, and moments that made me feel a little reluctant and uneasy. The fact that the game is so divisive makes the game much more unique and better in my opinion. Naughty Dog took some really bold decisions when it came to the story, and I for one enjoyed those decisions, and never did I think that I would play a game so personal, or would end up loving a character that I despised at the start of a game. The character development of Abby was one of the best things about the game, and this is where the game either makes or breaks for people playing it. If you are able to understand the character of Abby, then you are going to love the game and the choices it makes. But if you keep the death of Joel in your head, and refuse to let go the idea of revenge, then you are not going to enjoy this game. I think that the quote ‘There are no heroes in the world of Last of Us’ perfectly describes this game for me. It’s all about perspective, and the way you interpret the story is what makes all the difference. Yes Joel was a beloved character, and yes his death was painful, but the game needed his death, and I don’t think, Naughty Dog could’ve come up with a better story to justify the sequel. The Last of Us Part 2 is different from its predecessor, and is much more divisive and makes a lot of questionable and bold decisions, and these decisions are what make the game so appealing and unique to me. The same reason might lead you to hate the game, and that is completely fine. Art is meant to evoke feelings out of you, and just like every other good piece of art, it is polarizing. This is what makes The Last of Us Part 2 a masterpiece in my eyes. Naughty Dog have really outdone themselves and created a game that is so powerful and emotional that the story will stay with you long after the credits roll. The Ps4 has seen many great games during its life cycle, but I think that The Last of Us Part 2 will be forever remembered as a Masterpiece that did not shy away from doing things differently. Expand

But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
