Example: Joel was a person with extremely distrust of every person in the first. In this part 2, he went and believe in the first person thar appeared and,
    consequently, dies.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 is an near perfect game that captures what life would be like in a post apocalyptic Seattle. The Gameplay feels grounded and realistic and is much improved from 2013s TLOU. The story is also, despite the leaks, very immersive and makes you feel for both playable characters, Abby and Ellie.

Close to the start of the game, Abby and her group, the WLF (often referred to as the "wolves") move near to a settlement called Jackson in the hope of finding joel, the former main protagonist and kill him for essentially murdering her father. She does this right in front of Ellie which inturn sends Ellie on a path for revenge. You go through most of the game tracking down Abby as Ellie throughout seattle and then eventually the story gets to a point where you switch to abby's point of view and her backstory. The story here could've gone 1 or 2 ways. It could have made Abby seem to be a deranged psychopath who killed joel for no reason or it could have given her a backstory and a motive for why she did what she did and thankfully it went with the 2nd option. Abby before now was extremely unlikeable having brutally murdered a fan favourite character but now that she has a motive the player begins to sympathize and understand. Abby and Ellie eventually cross paths yet again and have a massive fight at the end.

Gameplay wise the game feels smooth and fun to play. Runners are as easy as ever to kill, stalkers are the creepiest out of the bunch as they just lurk in the shadows and wait to pounce, flickers are relatively easy to kill - all that is needed is one gun shot to destroy its armored head and another to kill it or if you want to take the stealthy approach Ellie always Carrie's a pocket knife so you can kill a clicker with one attempt each time however for abby you will, much like the first game have to craft a shiv as she doesn't carry anything with her. Bloaters are the hardest out of the bunch to kill however fire is the best option- one molotov and then keep dodging while shooting a few bullets should do the trick. Shamblers are the newest form of infected that are covered in spores and emit a corrosive gas that is often deadly. They're easy enough to kill However as 2 or 3 rifle bullets to the head should be enough. Watch out though as they emit one final gas cloud as they die.

So in conclusion I've given this game an 8/10 as both the Gameplay and story are very well worked however joel dying in the manor that he did is s bit suspect but regardless of the way he was killed, abby did have a motive so he wasn't killed for nothing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolute master piece, I have finished the game and I almost cried with the last flashback. Some people is just rating the game out of stupidity. There is no LGTB agenda ANYWHERE, we knew Ellie was gay from the first game and now she has a relationship which fits perfectly in whole vengance plot. Joel's death makes you feel angry and it fuels your feeling of vengance, and at the end you realize that Ellie is loosing everything and that Abby has lost everything too. Its not an easy story and that's why is beautiful, the fact that it doesn't give the player what they want doesnt make it a bad game, if you are angry because of that then you are an idiot. And you probably be better playing uncharted knowing that at the end everything is going to be fine. This is a game for grown ups. Expand

I’m not sure I understand the train of thought of the people who created the game is. But killing off a beloved character by a new character that no ones cares a about and then forcing us to play as this character and not giving us the option to enact revenge is baffling. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I get it. People are gonna be upset for what they did to the characters we love. But I think what lacks on most of the bad reviewers is empathy. What would you do in Abby's place? Or Joel's? Let's see some points:
    - Joel killed a lot of people because of his strong feelings towards Ellie, since he probably saw on her the daughter he lost.
    - The doctors on the surgery room were unarmed. Joel could've just knocked them and let them live. He CHOSE to kill them.
    - Abby went for revenge. She looked for Joel and no one else. She had let all of them live.
    - Ellie, on the other side, was pure rage. She didn't want to know, she just wanted to kill Abby. If you kill to revenge, doesn't that becomes a cycle?
    - Ellie's decisions because of her blind revenge become less and less acceptable, like leaving Dina, lying to Jesse and choosing not to look for Tommy.

When I first played Abby, I didn't want to. If people quit the game here, they are missing the whole point, which is "seeing through the other keyhole". You are playing the role of the one you're just developed so much hate too. But you start to see people caring for her, and her caring in return. She seems happy. Just like Ellie, she's part of a community. You start to see her human side. And you also start to understand how twisted these places are. Both WLFs and Seraphites. WLF are the militia. But their cause is for themselves only. The scars, as they call, are just enemies to be killed. Even if they are children. On the other side, most of the Seraphites has been using twisted concepts from their leader to justify their violent actions. I'm sure both of them were good people in the past. Abby shows a human side that most players are refusing to get. At some point, you don't want the game to proceed, but the ending was necessary.

To the technical stuff. Thanks Gustavo Santaolalla again for an amazing Soundtrack. The game is way quieter this time but it asks for it.
Also the graphics. It's in my opinion the best ones we have on PS4. Not just for the looks, but the details. It's sometimes even painful to kill enemies because they choke, you can see every slash, every shot. You can dismember them. When other enemies find about others death, they call for their friends. At some point I found one enemy that stopped all he was doing and started crying. Even the dogs cry for their humans. Talking about what. The combat is funnier this time. Prone, dodge and jumping were great additions. The enemies are more strategic. And different enemies require different approaches. But. I found the enemies continue to be dumb. You can run up on them, blast one or two with the shotgun, run to the grass and they'll forget you. I even tested in one fight, and with given patience, you can stealth kill all of them in the same spot. But there's only so much you can go with AI, and all games can be exploited to an extent, so that's understandable. My brother, for instance, is having a lot more trouble than me, and he's playing on normal.

About the duration. It took me 31h48m to finish the game. But in my opinion it was necessary. There are two "campaigns" and you need them to understand the whole scope of the game.

Talking about the new infected. I like how ND sticks to the ground instead of pulling weird shenanigans. There is a boss fight there's straight pulled from RE and its amazingly done. ND, if you ever read this, know that I'd gladly pay for an infected wave DLC.

Talking about the characters, I've been seeing a lot of hate on the LGBT theme. And I don't understand why. Each one is understandable. Special props to Lev. Amazingly built character. If you hate the game just because of this, the problem is on you.

In the end, The Last of Us Part II is not what we wished it happened to all of our beloved characters. But it was what needed to happen. For good or for bad. It just stole TLOU's first place as the best game I've played on my life. Thanks Naughty Dog, you've done it again.

I can confirm that both times it felt like a slog through miles of mud and grime. The only part of the game I really enjoyed was the upgrade mechanics and shooting, and even then, they were far from the best at it. The story was abysmal. I shouldnt need to suffer through 10 hours of gameplay for a few short segments with (a really dumbed down, almost like hes developing Alzheimer's or got hit in the head a few times, Version Of) Joel. Those little 15-30 min segments are the best parts of the game. You have your boy Joel again. Your supportive father figure. Haha You liked that guy? Hahah Golf club go KRRK.

Joel didnt deserve to die like that. He deserved to go out fighting for his little girl against a horde of angry fireflys, or a giant zombie. Not to some **** who cant deal with her/his daddy issues.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A piece of garbage. The story makes no sense and could not be written by anyone who has a little sense of logic and human emotion. I don't think it serves any other purpose than making the fanbase feel wanna vomit and disguised. We all know how cautious and smart Joel is from TLOU1, here he straight up tells a group of strangers his real name? Excuse me???? OK, I think it needs a little bit explanation why Joel has become a IQ nagative 100 guy in this game. Another thing, Abby killed Joel right after he saved her life --- with no hesitation? That does count as something right? The way he was killed is unnecessarily cruel. Really cheap shock value. Then the game doesn't stop going wose, and Abby is like "Yeah, I murdered Joel like a puppy, come and get me! NO F YOU, you don't get to do anything to me cuz the genius writer will make you spare me for whatever ****** reason only pickles would understand. Bonus, you have to play as me ^^" why the heck would I want to play as her? Oh, two sides of character? Sorry I'm good, if there's any sophistication in the characters in TLOUS2, it's because the story is so poorly written, and nothing in the game progression makes any sense. The guy who leaked the story is a hero, he was trying to save you 60 bucks.

Overall, TLOUS2 is a solid 0/10 for me. Although it's a decent game in all the other aspects, it was supposed to be the sequel of TLOUS. Its hostile disrespect towards the previous game disguises me to an immeasurable extend. Even a 0.1/10 is no no from me.

I was shocked and anxious, I already finished this game and the feeling it leaves me is disappointing, I really do not understand how it was impossible that ellie did not finish what she started and even so she ends up losing absolutely everything ... the only thing I will give thanks for is this phrase from joel to ellie: "if god gave me another chance, I would do it all over again" It was the only thing that apart me from the flashblacks of ellie that I enjoy like never before if you want a story full of nostalgia, unfortunately this is not your game ... The gameplay was pretty much the same as last of us with nothing really fresh and exciting. Then there is the story... playing as a character who kills your favorite character turns the game sour. I found myself hating every moment playing as Ally. Hurting and even killing characters you care about ruins the game. It makes the gameplay terrible. It makes you not want to continue the game. I found myself thinking it would get better but it never did. The game ends and I already feel that I know how the last of us 3 will play out and end. Ally gets to the fireflys and they find out she knows about the immune girl Elle. Now Ally has to travel to find Elle (probably broken and sad) to take her back so a vaccine can be created after her sacrifice. Boom. I just saved you $60 for the trash sequel. Expand

The violence was not an issue, if you’re buying an adult game you should expect adult content, I love how brutal the game is. When it comes to the story... I’m a fan. I love Ellie’s character and although she makes some poor decisions through the game the lovable person you took across America in the first game still shines through, he dynamic with Dina is wonderful. Abby is also an interesting character and although, again some missteps are taken with her I think she is a mirror of Ellie & I believe they are so similar. Ok glad I played this game and I would recommend it to anyone. My score reflects the odd misstep and frustration with some character decisions but it truly is one of the best. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not one for writing online reviews, and I wish I didn't feel compelled to join the negative reviewers when it comes to this game, but I do.

I am not butt-hurt about things many others seem upset about. My masculinity and sexuality aren't threatened by Ellie or her relationship with Dina. I'm not going to complain about the fact Joel died the way he did. The people whining about him going out that way have largely missed the point of the world set up in the first game. It isn't a world where being a bad-ass or a hero will guarantee you the kind of death everyone else would approve of. It's the kind of world where bad luck and making a wrong turn or letting your guard down at the wrong time, even for a few seconds, can cost you your life, so his death was as fitting as any other because those are the kinds of deaths this world hands out.

What bothers me about the game, and why it's getting such a low score from me, is that Naughty Dog lied to everyone about what it was. I didn't get the game they convinced me to buy in advance. I got half of that game, and half of a different game about someone I don't care for and spent the first half of the game actively wanting to kill.

I understand what Neil Druckmann is trying to do. It is presumptuous, arrogant, ham-handed, and disrespectful.

I could explain why at great length, but my main problem remains that this is not the game I was led by the marketing campaign to believe I was buying.

What Naughty Dog did here was a bit like marketing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to everyone, as a story continuing the saga of the protagonists of Harry Potter, told from the point of view of Harry Potter, and then reaching the halfway point in the book and starting over with the chapter title "Owl Post" a second time, with the opening sentences of the chapter being:

"Amanda Trakeskeal-- the strangely mannish daughter of the guy standing second to the left behind The Dark Lord the last time he was seen alive-- lay on her bed, contemplating revenge on Rubeus Hagrid, who had trampled her father to death on his way out of the ruins of the Potter house, cradling young Harry in his arms. Amanda spared a moment to wonder why so many people said her face looked 'punchable,' before steering her thoughts back to...."

You know, Ms. Rowling, that's okay. You don't need to bother trying to tell me the rest of that story. I have no interest in Amanda Trakeskeal as a person, because I didn't buy the book "Harry Potter & Amanda Trakeskeal & the Prisoner of Azkaban as Told From Two Different Points of View Because We Got Confused About the Fact This Isn't Star Wars and None of the People Reading This Give a Crap About the Idea a Great Many Truths This Narrative Clings to Depend Greatly on the Protagonist's Point of View."

Same thing here. Naughty Dog is not going to teach me some high-minded lesson about the futility of revenge and holding grudges by making me play the game from the point of view of both Ellie and Abby for a couple of reasons, chief among them being that I did not buy a game about the strangely mannish daughter of the guy who was standing second to the left behind the Dark Lord the last night he was seen alive, so I have no interest in the story from her point of view.

Abby exists to give the protagonists whose story I'm interested in something to struggle against and overcome. She isn't a real person; she's a narrative device. Forgetting her point in the narrative ruins the narrative.

Even Stephenie Meyer was able to figure out most people weren't going to care about the story from the point of view of someone who was only related to a minor secondary character on the antagonists' side, and made that a separate thing so the fans who might be interested could read it, and the fans who were reading the main story didn't have to slog through a bunch of garbage they'd find irritatingly irrelevant to the experience they were buying into, which is exactly how Naughty Dog should have handled Abby's campaign. They should have included it as a second campaign or DLC you could play in addition to Ellie's so it didn't interfere with your ability to complete the story-line you bought the game to play through.

And the shame of it is, they sacrificed being able to develop their new protagonists to the point they could be characters we cared about in order to half-ass trying to make us care about the other side, and it cost them the opportunity to give us an interesting new cast of characters and plot that would ultimately justify Joel's death as its inciting event.

Going half-in on developing twice the number of characters and half-in on developing two opposing plots doesn't add up to the same thing giving 100% to developing a single cast and story-line does.

    It just leaves everything wanting.

Naughty Dog single-handedly destroyed this franchise with this game. The first one was perfection, this one is extremely bitter. It’s extremely depressing. The journey is long and filled with absolutely no feeling of resolution. I did not play this game to sympathize with some piece of trash character and even remotely want to play as her after what happens in the intro. I seriously cannot believe Sony even let Naughty Dog do this. The voice acting and level of detail is definitely good. But with a **** story, this game just left me hating everything about it. I spent 7 years looking forward to Joel and Ellie, to basically get a knife stabbed in me 30 mins into the game and literally hate every min I had to play as Abby. I know that this is a story about revenge and whatnot, but who seriously gives a **** when hundreds of people died in the last game. I have lost all respect for Naughty Dog and hope they learn that they **** up big time to their fans. So many things wrong with the story that it just pisses me off even writing about it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Though I can understand why this is a unpopular opinion, I think most of this game were amazing and well developed. Yes I do believe Abby's story was drawn out and input some pointless details and the while time we were still angry because she killed our protagonist from the first game. However her story shows that she may not have been a bad person or at least no better than any other human trying to survive. And then theres how Joel died, I know some thought it did not do him any justice, but in a real apocalyptic scenario, it's unlikely he would go out a hero, or guns blazing or in some way that made players ls happy. And then there was the end of the game itself, I know personally I was broken, I was sad, and there was no happy ending, Abby lived, Joel was dead, Tommy was injured and begrudging toward Ellie, and Dina and JJ were gone, the last image we see is Ellie walking into the distance not knowing was happening next. Now I thought this ending (though it hurt) was genuine and realistic, Ellie lost more than what she started with, it would be impossible for her to have come out on top, and we see that, we see the price of revenge. And more importantly we see there are not always happy ending. The whole game is a beautiful, sad, and dark masterpiece of storytelling, and an insight into the price of revenge. Though I saw it was highly unlikely I believe that this ending sets up another sequel where we may see, l the ending we want. But until that is announced we must deal with the what we got and understand/ process this unique and realistic form of storytelling. *THIS IS AN OPINION* Expand

The whole Santa Barbara part seems like it makes no sense. But in a way it really does tie the whole story and message together. I think that the story is amazing and extremely engaging, although a little too long, and I don't understand why the death of Joel causes fans to hate this game. Though loved by the fans, not all the in-game NPCs have to love him. He is not a hero, he is an anti-hero at best. He killed so many people for his personal gain of keeping Ellie alive. Yes his death is incredibly tragic and depressing but it would not make sense to keep him alive no matter what.

Overall, the game is amazing. Story and Game play are both really good, especially the stealth in this game. The biggest let down of this game is the truly terrible editing. The problem is not what happens in the cut scenes, because the story told is really good, but the order in which it is shown to us, that is the real problem. The second half of playing as Abby is just terrible because we can't build a connection to her because we know how all of this is going to end.

There was a lot of potential which made the game shine in the first half and the ending but the second half sadly is just terribly paced. However, this does not mean the game itself is "a disgrace to the first one". It is a lot of potential badly executed for half the time.

So here´s an actual honest opinion. I just finished the game. And pretty much it's impossible for anyone to have finished it in just 24h. A long side the main story the game has several side content for you to explore. So if you do that not only is it an enjoyable experience but also it will take you longer to finish. What I can tell you right away is that only after the first hours of the game I not only got hooked but It became clear to me how talented Naughty Dog is at world building, storytelling and at gameplay. You need to play this to understand how detailed and deep the game is. But still if you really are on the fence, go watch some actual early gameplay videos that will allow you to understand what the game is all about. You'll see that the game is much better than what 11000 people claim to be only after the first 24h. Open your mind people. You built your own perception of what the sequel should be without even giving it a fair chance. It is because of how you are abusing the Metacritic system that it stops being useful for consumers that actual want a real impression on the product. Metacritic the way I see it you need to start asking for proof that a person actually bough the product in order to submit reviews. Anyway. If you finished the game and didn't like it I respect your opinion. But for me this is a groundbreaking game. One of the first or at least most impactful tragic game story. This is what people dont understand. They ask developers to be more original and when they do it they're criticized for doing it. Let me put it this way . People who love this game will forever hate it. And thats what is so good about it. Welcome to tragedy in video games. Thank you for having the courage to do it Naughty Dog.

The spoilers prior to release unfairly potrayed content to the player in such a way that misrepresents the experience this game actually has to offer. After experiencing said events in the story the way they were meant to be I can truly say that not only does this game constitute a proper follow-up to the first game, it is an outstanding and masterfully crafted experience that is without a doubt among the masterpieces of this console generation alongside games like Red Dead Redemption II or The Witcher.

I am truly glad that I didn't allow the hive mind hate for this game to keep me from one of the most precious gaming experiences I have ever had.

But I can not imagine that Neil used so a very naive even trash way to get this result. I do not know whether Neil played PART I BEFORE. But he wrote partII like a 5-6yo kid writing HW. He did not consider any connection between Part I AND PART ii Expand

Amazing, Simply Amazing, I loved it, everything about it was Amazing. This game by far is the best I've ever played, story to the gameplay and the music of course, graphics and the complexity of the whole package. Yes, some events are unexpected, the character changes are not ideal but after finishing the game, I did really appreciate all the choices Naughty Dog making this game. The fact that the ending isn't a happy ending and triggers so many strong emotional reactions from players shows how brilliant the game is. The developers deliberately play with the emotions of the players and get them out of their comfort zone. This also explains the many negative reviews of the players, who can't handle that. And I expect my review to be downvoted by the same people, but that’s okay.

It is certainly not a game for everyone, especially not for those who can only live with a good ending. But for those who can handle this kind of story, this game is unique except for some minor flaws and it is certainly one of the best of its kind.

I give some smaller point deductions for the skill system and the shooter mechanics.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
