It is a masterpiece. Can't imagine how much time and effort it'll take to finish such an epic thing. This is indeed the most ambitious and delicate project by ND.
But **** you for discrimination to Asian.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This franchise is all about the story. Without the story the game means nothing. This game does have great visuals and great gameplay, but the main focus needs to be the story. The story just isn’t good and it tries too hard to make you feel sorry for people that you immediately don’t want to feel sorry for. And the ending tries so hard to make you feel sad, without making any logical sense. Apparently negative reviews aren't allowed? **** off Metacritic! Expand

The story is great. Its meaningful and the plot unravels in an exciting way. The graphics are good but I dont score it an 8 for that. I mainly think it was worth it. One of my favs for this gen. The envirobment and their puzzlish design are the main reason I enjoyed the gameplay. Its a decent game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. These reviews are ridiculous and show the worst part of a user review system. The game is great, just as good as the first one. Any hate it gets is for spoilers with no context or anger of a made-up "agenda" should be ignored.

The story does have some pacing issues, but it subverts expectations. I went in loathing one of the two main playable characters, but by the end I really enjoyed them. It was a great juxtaposition, where Ellie is an entirely new character arc, and Abby is more akin to the first game, and they cross over in a brilliant way.

lack of multiplayer out the gate is a huge bummer as I really enjoyed the multiplayer in the first game. Hopefully, they add it later.

An impressive technical achievement that still manages to deliver effective and simple, yet arguably dated gameplay, with a story that shows moments of brilliance, yet is overall marred by poor writing that feels contrived, forced, self indulgent, and overly moralistic.

    pros:
    - excellent graphics
    - incredible environments to explore
    - dated, yet IMO still effective gameplay - an extension of TLOU's tense resource scarce combat and exploration
    - some very good story moments (in particular the flashbacks) that will make TLOU fans nostalgic - the game is arguably worth playing for these alone.
    - The game tries to do something very daring in its story, which is a good thing. As is the inclusion of new characters who are openly transgender (no, not Abby, but another new character), and who do grow close to you as the game progresses.

    negative:
    - very badly told story with a ton of "WTF, why did they just do that?" moments that are obviously out of place, are unintentionally funny, and appear to be included solely as a means to get the story moving
    - some unlikeable new characters that give nothing new to TLOU universe
    - The game attempts to make a player question the point of violence, yet does this by never giving you a choice in key moments, and makes the possibility for complete stealth gameplay (no kills) virtually impossible (eg. in order to fully explore an environment and gather resources you will have to kill all enemies, otherwise full exploration is near impossible. The game thus forces you to play in a certain way otherwise you will either not progress, or will miss half of its contents - significantly, this is not due to difficulty, but rather a failure in game design).

On the whole if the story writing and screenplay had been better the structure of this game could have really paid off... I found the idea of having a main character killed off early, and playing a part of the game as the antagonist, actually quite good - it is just how this is done, who these people are, and what they do that makes you laugh due to the cringe, which is an unintentional outcome of the poor writing.

It gets an 8 due to the fun gameplay, incredible environments, great voice acting, and graphics... having finished the game it did manage to leave a profound effect, as the overall experience was still enjoyable despite the serious pacing and storytelling issues.

You can never go wrong with Naughty Dog productions. The game is technically impressive and even tho I prefer the first one, story wise (which is entirely subjective) it's still a great game and one of the best exclusives available on Playstation.

Let's start with the obvious: this game did a lot right. Technically it's a masterpiece, the acting and mo-cap are excellent, the attention to detail and level of polish is exceptional. Technically it's a masterpiece, the acting and mo-cap are excellent, the attention to detail and level of polish is exceptional. It takes clever gameplay elements from the first game and makes welcome improvements in multiple ways. In an industry with a lot of mediocre releases this game does stand out from the crowd, and it doesn't surprise me that critics loved it.

Users have been more divided though, so let's next cover the elephant in the room: no, this game doesn't have "an agenda." Honestly I've asked lots of people what they mean by that and I've yet to receive a coherent answer (unless you count "the existence of lesbians" as an agenda). This game has flaws, but they aren't related to politics in either the game's themes or its creators.

So why did this game not match the excellent first game? Well there's 2 things you need to realise about the story. Firstly, many games centre around player agency but TLOU2 has fully fledged characters and instead invites you to walk in their shoes- whether you agree with their decisions or not. The first game did this too (I remember much ranting about the lack of choice at the end of that game), so this isn't inherently bad game design, but it could cause frustration. Secondly, this game is about revenge but it isn't about catharsis of *achieving* revenge. This isn't Taken or John Wick where revenge is the flimsy excuse for a bad-ass character to leave a trail of violence. Instead it's really about obsession: about pursuing revenge to escape something else; repeatedly characters throw themselves into courses of action in order to avoid something that is really hurting them (in the 2 main examples it is avoiding grief by pursuing revenge, well past the point of rationality, but in 1 case it's really to avoid an awkward conversation... yeah I know.)

So Naughty Dog had an ambitious idea for a story- make the player walk in the shoes of characters who are running from their emotions, who act abhorrently, who the player has reason to hate. It could have worked too, but I think (personal theory here) the reason user scores have been so divided is because ND tripped themselves up in the story-telling, and as a result they didn't manage to bring everyone along with the story in they way they hoped.

I'll avoid specific spoilers, but despite dramatic early events the first part of the game is actually a slow burn. There isn't much tension between the characters present then, so all of the narrative tension comes from the distant promise of pursuing revenge. But on top of this, the game heavily uses flashbacks to flesh out story points. Taken on their own, these flashbacks are lovely and beautifully written, but in the pacing of the game they feel like interruptions. In the Left Behind DLC of the first game flashbacks worked really well- but that game alternated between 2 time periods. In TLOU2 each flashback is to a new vignette- requiring exposition, setting, and sometimes new characters. They feel like side-quests that interrupt the flow of the main story. And this leads up to the first big problem: a significant story moment occurs midway through TLOU2 where the writers take their first big ambitious leap- and it feels at first like another sidequest. Rather than engaging in the dramatic new perspective, I think many players played on wanting to get back to the "main" story- and thus missed that, actually, the story was now going in a completely different direction to tell a completely different message. Miss that turn and everything in this game's second half feels incoherent.

Having said that, this game also loses a point for the 3rd act, which either wasn't long enough or was too long. It had its moments, but it lost all momentum and the final big moments felt more like a whimper than a bang. Again, if you had missed the change in storytelling direction 10 hours earlier the ending wasn't just limp- it must have seemed utterly detached from the "revenge story" of the early game.

So overall, exceptional game in many ways but over-ambitious story that it couldn't quite pull off the telling required to make it land with everyone, and an ending that works better on paper than in delivery. A sequel to a rightly beloved game that fell short of that standard. Nevertheless one of the better games I played this year and it deserves 8/10 (far worse games have scored better!)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is not what I expected. A lot of things happened that I did not really like but I believe that is just how it goes sometimes. We forget that not all stories told to use thru any form of art is meant to be one thing. Sometimes a picture can look of way, but you see something different. So, the story is what kept me in this game. The look is nice. sound is good. Gameplay is I would say its weakness. I never felt like I was fully in control of Ellie. She kind of went left when I went left and when switching to right, she would walk backwards awkwardly. The gun play has not changed much. It’s a bit wonky but it was like that in Last of Us. SPOILER TALK: So, I went into this game with an open mind. I didn’t read any spoilers till after I was done with game. Am I a fan of Abby and the time I spent controlling her? No. I did not. She killed my favorite character in one of the greatest story games I have ever played. Why would I want to control her? Well the story explains it. Joel was not a good guy. He was not the good guy in first Last of us. He did a lot of horrible things before the first game. Did bad things during first Last of Us. And Abby was someone that he wronged. Her hate came from the murder of her father. The man that Joel killed in the surgery room to save Ellie. In our eyes we loved Ellie just as much as he did. We spent a lot of time with them to justify what he did... But. We knew it was wrong what he did. Right before the credits of Last of Us, when the camara zooms in on Ellie. We see her puppy eyes. And all she says is "ok".. We knew everything that just happened was wrong. We felt guilt. We and Joel lied to her. The chance of everything going back to normal was stripped away but a man and a lie. So ... I understand Abby. Her hate she had for Joel. And why she had to kill him. It’s what we felt for her thru Ellie while we spent hours hunting her and her friends. I will not go into any gay or trans or any issues like that because I believe your opinion is your opinion. I had no Issue with any of that. Back to story. I would have preferred to not control Abby. Always be with Ellie. To have the story of Abby and her dad revealed someway different. For Ellie to be like you killed my dad and Abby sees what she has done. That the father was taken from her and her hate and revenge has done the same to someone else. I cried a little when Joel died. I had to stop and gather my thoughts. I was sad, angry and confused. That was good story telling. Going back in time thru Ellie's memories was amazing too. It made me feel the feels lol. To see hear Joel's voice again. To hear him say kiddo. I felt what I believe Ellie felt. Calm. Happy. and once the scene ended. More anger and hate. Now I will not go to into it. I did not like the ending too much. I think going back for Abby. Trying to kill her and then deciding not to. Getting home to see Ellie's life is gone. Dina and everything gone. Missing her fingers so she cannot even play Joel's song to Ellie.... I teared up again. We see a flashback of her last conversation with Joel after the bar fight with Seth. She finally lets out what Joel's lie made her feel. She felt useless. Like her life meant nothing. And they patch things up. Joel saying if he had the chance, he would do everything again made me feel the feels x5. He loved her. She was his kid now. And he would always fight for her. He would beat up a bigot at a bar, or even mow down an entire army of solders to keep her safe. To finish up. I enjoyed the story. It had flaws. It could have been told better. This sadly was not a story about a girl and her dad surviving. It was a story about lose. Hate. Revenge. Losing yourself. Mentally going where you thought you could not. A place you might never escape. Ellie went thru something I am sure Joel went thru with the loss of Sarah. I am an optimistic. When Ellie remembers how she was able to start forgiving Joel. I hope this gave her hope to go find Dina and get her life back. To leave the murder and hate behind. And be the girl in the room full of weed. Being somewhat happy. And having a reason to being alive. So, I am giving this game an 8/10. It made me feel what I did not expect to feel. Thank you Expand

Naughty Dog took a risk with some parts of the story which is why people 'hate' the game. Graphically the game is fabulous. Face mimics are out of this world, literally the best face animations I have seen in the video game. Regarding the plot, it is twisted and I understand why people don't like it so much, however this is not a reason to give this game 2/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay is good but it does get a little stale near the end, and there isn't much evolution to Naughty Dog's DNA. They are playing it safe when it comes to their palette in "fun factor". I would have loved to have seen more interactions with monsters and an independent day and night cycle. A good multiplayer will make the replaybility go up.

Storywise, i think they are trying new things to expand from what you would expect from their usual linear storytelling techniques you'll see in the uncharted and last of us series. But I think for a story with parallels between characters maybe they should have stuck with one plot instead of adding two. Abby's part ruined the momentum, it felt like a filler, took away from Ellie's progression, and made the end feel mute, but Lev's introduction is great so take the good with the bad.

Still it was an interesting experience, and the game deserves to be played. Not a lot of games reach this level of production, but it's not a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us II had impossible standards to meet. By 2013, Naughty Dog already established themselves as capable of producing some of the most engaging and boundary-pushing studios in all of gaming with classics like Crash and Uncharted 2, but the Last of Us cemented them in the video game hall of fame for all time. While the game had its flaws, it told a gripping and memorable story which inspired countless great games for years to come. They had peaked, no question. But then, Uncharted 4. *EXPLOSIONS*. The presentation in this game is off the charts. The graphics are gorgeous, and the incredible performances by every actor, especially Nolan North and Emily Rose sold me at every moment. Uncharted 4 tells a roller coaster of a story which kept me glued to the screen the whole time. Truly, it is one of the highlights of storytelling in video games to this day. The game was also pretty fun to back that up. So, is it even possible to top the storytelling of Uncharted 4? For me, no, but I do still think the Last of Us II is an enthralling experience. The visuals are fluid and stunning. Everything is easy to navigate and nothing takes you out of the experience just like in the first game. The combat is smooth, but it is also absolutely brutal. I understand now why this game is about hate. Every act of violence feels personal, raw, and real. People will beg for their lives, they’ll scream, they’ll cry, and the performances absolutely sucked me into the experience and sold me on what an absolute cold-blooded killer Ellie is becoming. Some of these gunfights can go on for a long time and by the time I finally gained the upper hand, I felt like Ellie. I was going to make these bastards suffer. The levels themselves are also bigger, more open, and more made to explore and experiment with than in either Last of Us 1 or Uncharted 4. The story, while not as clean or as elegant as the first game’s, is still outstanding in its own right. I thought Abby served as a clever parallel to Joel from the first game and a mirror to Ellie in this game. I originally thought that there was no way I would ever come around, but eventually I did, and that made the whole rest of the story all the more enthralling. I don’t really understand why people are mad. Joel's death of course is painful and makes the player angry, but that is sort of why it's such a brilliant start for a revenge story. Furthermore, the way that the game evolves after his death makes it feel sufficiently weighty and meaningful, and it is only 1 of many, many painful instances in this game. Characters you care about during the game will make choices that you don't agree with and at the end of the day it is up to you to attempt to understand and empathize with them. At the end, all I could do was simply hope that they would make it to the other side. I haven’t been this invested in a game’s story since Red Dead 2, so I give Last of Us II an 8 out of 10. Expand

I guess, I will start with this idea - I totally understand why people are hating this game (besides all LGBT, transgender and other political nonsense). They hate it because this game is dark. While the first Last of Us had an alluring story of bonding between a figuratively father and daughter, second game is about the grief and how different people deal with it. First game was dark in atmosphere, but was full of jokes, funny and sweet moments and overall message of the game was bright. Second game is much different. This game has practically zero light in its story and it is full of darkness, which is shown in the very end the best way possible. I honestly believe, that everyone should play this game just to experience this darkness and to see how they react to it. I think, that people, who say that the plot here is 1/10 are either shallow people who have zero understanding of what darkness is or people who are so in love with the first game, that they cannot forgive NaughtyDog for making second one as different as possible. I do not respect the choice of NaughtyDog to push transgenderism and LGBT policies (my only issue with LGBT was the word "Bigot" in the very beginning of the game, because this word is overused), but it is crucial to say, that these ideas were as little represented as possible and have no influence on the story whatsoever.

To sum up, I cannot say if the Last of Us part II is better or worse than its predecesor, simply because it is a sincere original dark story about loss, guilt, redemption and consequences of ones action. This game is a must to play and I am grateful to NaughtyDog that they made this sequel. It made me think about a lot of things.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me preface this review by stating that The Last of Us Part 2 (TLOU2) was a game I was looking forward to for a very long time. I'm a big fan of the original and I bought the game when it was released even though | did not own PS3, I had to borrow it from a friend. I bought its remastered version years later with my PS4pro and I enjoyed it as much as for the first time.

TLDR summary: The Last of Us part 2 is well realized game that improved on many aspects of its predecessor that were considered low point of the game back in 2013. Visuals, sound and music are absolutely top notch and can be considered among best of this generation. Its story is and will for a while be considered controversial. I consider TLOU2 plot and character arcs its weakest link, which is stark contrast to the original, which was generally recognized for its gripping story and interesting and likeable characters.

TLOU2 is a competent game that improved upon aspects of its predecessor that were considered by many its weakest points-combat, stealth and AI. All of these aspects are significantly improved in TLOU2. This is important to understand as the sequel is focusing more on combat than the original. Improved combat and AI makes the combat more challenging but more importantly fun. I enjoyed combat in TLOU2 while I considered it necessary evil in the original. I still prefer to use stealthy approach to combat but this is more due to my lack of skill than game not giving me tools to overcome those challenges.

Visuals -- simply stunning and represent a great farewell to PS4 era. The original was a swan song for PS3 and TLOU2 will be among few other games to be considered technical masterpiece of PS4 generation. I had encountered very few issues, mostly minor ones related to low resolution textures in some places or slow texture loading/pops from time to time. There is very few loading screens, which is all the more impressive when considering how visually impressive the game is.

Sound and music -- probably the most outstanding part of TLOU2 for me that absolutely enthralled me from start to finish. Music is absolutely great and I hope there will soon be official soundtrack for TLOU2. Sound is very competent, atmospheric and well realized. Combat sound especially are dramatic and match the intensity of the gameplay.

Exploration -- Naughty Dog made the game large and even dabbled into semi-open world in certain parts of the game. They also introduced player ability to jump but I honestly did not feel it was really crucial in exploration. I enjoyed scavenging for various materials hidden around maps even if I was constantly full on most resources. I played the game on moderate difficulty where crafting materials and ammo are reasonably plentiful. My biggest gripe was low reserves of materials or craftable items that main character could hold in inventory. It is still important to scavenge even if you are full on materials because you will find pills and weapon parts to upgrade your character or weapons respectively.

Game pacing and length -- I found the game well paced with frantic sections followed or preceded by calm periods that gave you chance to breath out, lick your wounds and prepare for another section. The structure of the game is rather predictable--large action set piece is followed by scavenging and exploration or story-telling bit. There are few areas where this structure is altered but none of these are too long or otherwise detracting from your enjoyment. I feel the game was stretched a bit, especially near the end there were few sections I struggle to justify their existence in retrospect.

    Story -- ***SPOILERS AHEAD***

This is a part where I was disappointed by TLOU2. Not because the story was bad but because Naughty Dog decided to make huge leap from original game and refocus it it on Ellie and other characters. The disappointment stems from my love of the original while the sequel offers unexpected story continuation (maybe progression is better term as there is not much continuation), undertones and resolution.
The story will take you to unexpected places and might feel disappointing or outright outrageous if you are fan of the original. The game will drag you along its unforgiving story often feeling like an unwanted passenger at times. It took me almost till 3/5 of the game to come to terms with all its characters and start enjoying them.
Conclusion of the game is very open-ended and vague. It does not provide satisfactory closure and I long for more while knowing there is no story DLC in works and if another sequel ever get made it will be years before it comes out.

The fluidity of combat either melee/firearms, the camera angles that occur during combat, the smoothness in movement, the beautiful and disturbing enviorments, the animations, all top notch.
Storyline-wise obviously it's not as impactful as the first, but wasn't also completely against the fact that they introduced a new character as the lead role for the most part.
I'll admit at first I hated Abby (myself having a connection w/Joel from the previous game). But as the game continued a grew a soft spot for her. This game reminds me a lot of the ethics in 'Game of Thrones' where there is no purely good person as there is no purely evil person either.
There are also points where I feel the scenes are made strictly for shock value, as there are incredibly violent and sexual scenes that I thought were a bit over the top. This game absolutely not be played by anyone under 18! Or anyone who is not aware of adult situations.
The story is a real bummer. Much like other blockbuster movies nowadays "Infinity Wars, Joker, etc.", it paints a bleak picture that very much similar to actual real life. So depending whether you like the cold truth or like to escape to a better world its a matter of taste in how this ends. I definitely expected more closure, but, I guess it gives lead way into a possible 3rd game.
Overall, the gameplay superseded the story for my rating. Amazing gameplay/graphics/tech design, bleak and open ended ending.

There comes a moment in this game where it sets up a pretty good ending, but then for some reason, it keeps going, and leaves Ellie with absolutely nothing, and left a lot to be deisred. But besides that, the game is very good. The gameplay is amazing and the scenery is truly stunning. Expand

Though at times it feels as if the game is trying to tell a more emotional story with important themes, while leaning too much on gratuitous violence (while understandable for the setting) as if it hasn't grown up too much since 2013.
None the less, this is a game that doesn't pull it's punches and Naughty Dog have delivered another cinematic adventure, it's definitely an experience that as a fan of video games I'd say is worth playing.

People hating on it for the themes of identity and sexual preference discussed was sadly way too easy to see coming and my advice is they need to get over themselves and maybe reflect inward.
Stop rating 0/10 for the sake of it, which then causes people to rate 10/10 to counter it, just skewing the ratings even more -_-

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Lemme just say I'm unbelievably lucky to have missed the leaks in April. I absolutely loved TLOU from the moment I got to play the demo at PAX East back in 2013. Thankfully I went into TLOU2 without any of the story spoiled for me, but to be perfectly honest, even if I knew I think I'd still like the game.

    Why?

Now that I've finished it, I would like to give my thoughts on the three biggest complaints I've been seeing online. First, that killing Joel was, at best, **** storytelling, and at worst, a huge F-you to TLOU fans. I hated that Joel died that way, but in my opinion it was perfectly appropriate for the story they were trying to tell. Others have said this, but TLOU2 is essentially a love letter to Joel. I was disappointed that he wasn't a main character but the player is supposed to mourn his loss.

The second gripe that I keep hearing is "Abby sucks." No **** she's a murderer. You're not supposed to like her. By playing as her, we are forced to experience the consequences of Joel's selfish decision. The unfortunate conceit on part of the writers is that they don't really care if you like her or not. Her purpose in the game is to show that other people in this world, just like Joel and Ellie, have families, hopes, loves, and motivations just as complicated as the main characters. The uninfected people you kill are actual people. Often **** people, but Joel and Ellie aren't exactly saints themselves.

Yeah, I get that it was a bit off-brand for Joel and Tommy to let their guard down when they first met Abby in the woods, but after five years of "normal" life in Jackson maybe softened them a bit. Who knows? To be completely honest some of the Abby parts for were a slog for me, but the destination was worth it. I could write a much longer essay of what I think of Abby but here isn't the place. Suffice to say, I totally get why some people still don't like her after all that. However, a lot of these 0 and 1 reviews just seem like a tantrum over having to play someone they don't like while completely missing the point that Abby's journey is essential to not only Ellie's journey, but the overarching point that justice isn't always possible and revenge isn't always satisfying.

The last major complaint is the idea that Ellie "failed" Joel, or that the whole point of the game was lost, by her not killing Abby. That complaint really blows my mind because the whole game was trying to beat into you the futility of vengeance in a world where everyone has suffered terrible losses. Abby learns this the hard way by opting into the cycle of violence by killing Joel, only to lose her friends and loved ones by Ellie's hands. By the final confrontation, they're both completely broken. Ellie's obsession with Abby is really just her displaced grief at never being able to properly forgive Joel, plus her massive survivor's guilt of being immune and it being rendered pointless. During that fight I was horrified at the thought of Ellie actually killing her, the same as when Abby was about to kill Ellie in the theater. Granted I care more about Ellie than Abby, but if the game had ended with Abby drowned and Lev alone I would have lost my ****.

Overall, I think the game is absolutely worth playing. Sure, there are some things I think could have been done better, specifically the pacing of some of the Abby parts and the fact that all the decisions seem so predetermined. I understand why some people dislike the structure of the game and how you play as Abby after Ellie, but I personally don't think that warrants a very low score. Also, I feel a bit cheated in not giving Ellie a ratking-esque boss fight, but that's not enough to knock off a point.

What I think the game did exceptionally well is the accessibility options, because I'm hard of hearing and being able to adjust the subtitle size and add direction indicators is really nice. The gameplay, skill upgrades, and weapon selection are top-notch of course. One other thing that made me really happy was they didn't pull the "bury your gays" with Dina.

The story wasn't a disappointment, but it wasn't immediately satisfying in the way the TLOU was. It took me a week after finishing it to process what I really think of it, and the more I think about it the more I want to play it again. Then again I'm a sucker for sad ****.

I really appreciate the narrative risks they took with this game. When they said it was dark, they meant for the player, not just the characters. This isn't about revenge as a power fantasy, it's the darkness of watching someone you care about spiral down a path to misery. In the end Ellie saved herself, but it cost her nearly everything. I sincerely hope there's a TLOU3-- that sad dumb lesbian better find Dina and get a happy ending where a cure can be developed without killing her. One can hope, right?

I cant understand Neil Druckmann!! Why anyone needed to kill Joel and this storyline?! Its disgusting like piece of **** It makes you reallyyy dissapointing I understood what would happen to the ending and if you want to remove some characters nothing really happens I swear!! Like Dina at the ending I thought at least Ellie will kill Abby but nothing freaking happens Ellie needed to kill Abby at least to make story better and why to they lied to us!! There is a freaking marketing lie we thought Joel woukd help us in the game but 30 seconds later we saw Joel was killed by Abby b.tch but if we screw storyline and characters everything is perfect like gameplay, voice actors, soundtracks, artificial inteligence are almost perfect! Just there is something I need to say most of gaming channels said that the counterattacks are really hard to do but it was really easy for me I think because of I play Batman Arkham games a lot nevermind and if you punch you can feel it really good, if you want toplay stealth, survivor theme Tlou2 is the best option for you but you need to screw storyline...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hate when people conflate lack of things happening in the plot w/ lack of things happening within characters. Abby goes from hardcore no questions ask killer, to befriending a would be enemy, rediscovering her humanity, all completely independent of Ellie & her story.

In the beginning of the game, Ellie has a fractured relationship with Joel & a burgeoning relationship with a pregnant Dina. After witnessing Joel's tortuous murder, Ellie's vow to kill Abby would have even made the God's quake for a second, But Owen, the future scar sympathizer, the man that wants to hope again w/ The Fireflies & Santa Barbara. Rather than being a pawn in the senseless violent war between The Seraphites & The WLF stands between Ellie, sparing her life.

Ellie has come to Seattle to ***k **i* up & kill Abby, & she can't find Abby. As each day passes, Ellie ventures down a darker path, killing Jordan, torturing Nora, culminating in day 3, killing Owen & a pregnant Mel. For a moment Ellie realizes that her revenge led to greater pain, greater trauma and decides to return home...but then Abby appears having Tommy on the ground, shooting Jesse as he barges in... Eventually, Ellie is unable to defeat Abby, having her arm broken, Dina pierced with an arrow as Abby smashes Dina's head to the ground, she grabs her knife about to deal the killing blow to a pregnant woman as Ellie did to Mel. But Lev came to to the rescue. Lev a boy exiled from his group because of his identity built a kinship with Abby, who a week ago would have been his enemy & Abby spares them...again.

Abby goes from hardcore no questions ask killer, to befriending a would be enemy, rediscovering her humanity, completely independent of Ellie & her story. Abby starts her story as an infantryman going to the FOB. Upon meeting Isaac, she then wants to find out the truth about Owen & Danny. On her way she is caught by Scars, as she's a kick of a barrel away from being hanged, Yara has her "wings" clipped for sympathizing with an apostate (her brother). Lev kills a scar, Abby saves Yara, the kindness is the returned as Yara tells Lev to cut Abby down. They work together to stay alive for how ever brief. Abby helps set Yara's arm & finds the truth about Owen & then bang.

Day 2 is pretty simple, Abby feels compelled to seek out Yara & Lev, leading Abby to bring Yara to the aquarium. Yara's arm need to be cut off, so Abby & Lev journey to the hospital. They bond a bit, in their fear, while also speaking of their respective factions’ "truths". But Day 3 is when everything is turned to an 11. Lev goes to the island because he still hopes his mom would break from her ways coming with him (sorry Lev) to Santa Barbara. Abby & Manny have a tussle with some sniper guy (RIP Manny), luckily, Yara intervenes in the scuffle & they're able to find a boat eventually reaching Lev, On their way out of the Island, Abby unfortunately comes face to face with Isaac. Isaac about to pull the trigger on Abby to kill a scar kid, is killed by Yara. In these few seconds, Abby escapes with Lev eventually leading back to the aquarium where Abby awaits, Owen, Mel & Alice to have the boat ready for Santa Barbara. Only to find Alice dead, Owen shot & Mel stabbed.

18 months later, we see Ellie (still plagued by Joel's death) in a farmhouse with Dina & JJ. When an opportunity to resolve this trauma comes by a disgruntled Tommy, Ellie has to take it... but wait you have Dina & JJ, Abby let you live not once but twice, but you're still going for revenge. (I guess Ellie really does not appreciate what she has until it's gone). After reaching Santa Barbara, acquiring a very nice silencer rifle. She finally finds Abby (a husk of her former self, both literal & figurative), cuts her down but Abby doesn't care about Ellie, she cuts down Lev, carries him to the boats & hopefully reach the fireflies once again. But Ellie, having gone through hell for this moment, musters up the want for revenge. It's unsatisfying, this isn't the Abby that killed Joel, or the Abby in the theater, once a lingering memory of Joel comes to Ellie, she chooses to spar Abby. Revenge was Ellie's driving force, what changed... it's not going to honor Joel or help with Ellie's trauma. It will only continue the cycle of revenge & senseless violence (sounds like the whole WLF & Seraphite story line playing as the backdrop to the exact same drama between Ellie & Abby).

If anything, The Last of Us 2 is about finding a purpose. Ellie & the prospect of the cure, later adopted by Tess, Joel "saved" Ellie who filled a Sara sized hole in his heart, Owen had the hope of the Fireflies & Santa Barbara with Mel, Yara, Lev & Abby adopting that dream. Dina had Ellie & JJ. But what did Ellie and Tommy have, after Joel's death… revenge. It consumed them to that point of self-destruction. But Ellie, letting Abby live, goes on to find her purpose (Dina & JJ).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have played through the game twice at this point just to have a good opinion and to give the best review possible. This game gains a lot of controversy and now I understand why. It is not a 10/10 game as the reviewers say, but it is not a 5.6 or a 0 as the users rate it either. The game is definitely flawed and is not as perfect as the first one was. As both a naughty dog and the last of us fan, I waited for very long to play this game. I wanted to see out the story and the perfect cliffhanger the first one ended with. But sadly, by the end I was left confused and frankly not satisfied with the story or the characters.

It has positives, with which Im gonna start. The gameplay is fantastic. Even though they only added proning, dodging and jumping to the game, it gives the already great gameplay the first one had even more depth and options to have fun with. I found the mechanics great and the weapons good as well. The game is its best when played on survival difficulty since it forces you to use all available resources in any given situation. The graphics are also amazing and breathtaking, the environments and the action sequences are great as you might expect from naughty dog. the sound design is one of the best I have ever been exposed to. Playing this with good quality headset will enhance the experience greatly. And as you might expect from a naughty dog game, it involves and uses your emotions very well.

But I do regret to say this game has very low lows. The characters and the story are very poor compared to any previous naughty dog game. It felt as though they crumbled by the pressure of the greatness they achieved with the first game. For me, playing half the game as Abby was a huge disappointment. I did not care for her. I did not want to play as the person who killed the character I loved so much from the first game. I found myself rushing through the parts where I had to play as her, both because I thought they werent gonna be as long or as relevant. I did not had any interest at all about who she was, who she liked and disliked and what her background is. I did find some value in understanding what her motivations were for killing Joel, but that did not justify me playing so much as her.

I bought this game to play as Ellie. It is as simple as that. I wanted to see out her story, I wanted to understand how everything affected her. And even though the game has a very clear message that the past will haunt you, that revange is not always good, and that this girl that you loved lost her innocence, It felt as though they almost completely destroyed all the flawless character development they achieved in the first game. I repeat, I wanted to play as Ellie, and halfway through the game I found out that I would not play as her as much as I wanted to.

This brings me to how much the writting and the gameplay favored Abby. She gets some of the coolest action sequences and some of the most relevant moments of the story. But the thing is I did not care about her at all. It just felt as grinding for me, just to come back to where the story involves Ellie again. Then, Im left with me still playing as Abby getting to almost kill Ellie even though I did not want to. I found myself letting Abby be killed by Ellie just to get the satisfaction, but the game didnt give me that choice. It just pulled me back to do what I was suppossed to be doing.

Naughty dog is an expert in story driven games. But this game is too story driven for its own good. It tells the story they want to tell. It doesnt give you any choice in whatever happens in the story, and that is not always bad, but when you were so emotionally invested from playing the first game, it just feels like they are manipulating you into completing the story they want to.

Overall the game is pretty damn good and it achieves a lot. It is deffinitely one of the best games i played this generation on the ps4, but I was very dissapointed with how it turned out story wise. The characters deserved better, Joel and Ellie deserved better. I did not care for Abby, for anyone she loved, and for anyone she met. It felt as if all the characters in her side of the story were just shoved in there and they expected you to like and undesrtand them. But I didnt, and I doubt anyone did. I played The last of Us and I cared for Joel and Ellie because of that. The sections of the game that have joel and Ellie are some of the best, but they are so few and far between that the game just ruins them.

So.. I give this game an 8 because I am a naughty dog fan and a The last of us fan,but if I was not i Could have given it a 7 or lower. Gameplay is good, graphics and audio are good, but story, progression and characters are poor, especially after all the hype and expectation the first game caused.

No entanto, a história é bem clichê.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, I've finally finished the game. It has excellent graphics and great audio design. However, the story is not as good as the first one. As a huge fan of the original game, this one didn't quite resonate with me. I feel like the writer's attempt to make the player sympathize with Abby doesn't really work well. When I played as Abby, I could never shake off the fact that she killed one of the most beloved characters. The fact is she's a new character and the way she's introduced makes me want to hate her and nothing else. I know what she did was justified and you learn the reason and motivation for her action when you play from her perspective. We played mostly as Joel in the first game and by the time we reach the end, we bonded with the character. And when he suddenly gets killed, regardless of whether it's justified or not, you can't help but hate the killer. This is the only gripe I have for the game. Other than that, I really liked the gameplay, audio design, music and combat. This is not the best game I've ever played but it definitely doesn't deserve a 0/10. Expand

    - Unfortunately the soundtrack which is almost not present, one of the highlights of the 1st opus was the OST, except that there, rare the occasions where it made an impact on me.
    - The second point is that at the time I felt a little deja vu and repetitivity.
-The AI level always remains so, enemies humans or monsters are predictable.

    The positive:
    - Script and story, that's what I expect from a narrative game, bringing realism and getting out of the predictable, i mean the world We know is not the same for those people, it's a jungle law, every single one of them been trough a lot to SURVIVE, and that's why some actions seem almost natural for them, I salute the staff for the audacity, If they think of a sequel, I wish them good luck ..
    - The characters are great, I got attached to them(el hombre: Manny is too cool)
    - Graphics, nothing breathtaking. but it's good.
    - Game-play, following the first installment, RAS, easy to use and effective.

For days after beating it, I've felt the same emotions I've felt after a bad breakup or after a funeral. I'm not being hyperbolic, this is the most devastating piece of art I've ever experienced. I don't know if I hate it, I don't know if I love it. All I know is I've never had this strong of an emotional reaction to any game, any movie, any album, or any book. As a huge fan of storytelling in general, I think this is extremely risky, bold, and challenging. As a Last of Us fan, I feel attacked and brutalized. If the theme of the first game is "Not being able to let go", then this game is the complete opposite. This story is asking us to let go OF The Last of Us, as it asks Ellie to let go.

This isn't the game I wanted, but honestly, it isn't anything I ever could have been prepared for. I think after a long, long time, this could either be one of my all time favorite games, or hell, maybe even a least favorite. I don't know. I just hope that people who REALLY are hating this, try to look at it from more than just one angle, which is the whole point of this story. I'm not asking you to like it or love it, but try to understand what the game is trying to do, at the very least.

Story and narrative are inferior to the first game but overall it's not as bad as it seems. The ending could have been better if the player was given choice. TLoU Part 2 is beautiful, well-written and full of intense action. In fact it has some of my favourite, survived by the skin of my teeth moments of any game. The reason it isn't a perfect ten is because the story is grim and unrelenting. It is certainly the most mature, 'adult' story I've ever played. I don't mean in the sense of its graphic violence (you're going to see a lot of mutilation) , but more that while each character is relatable they are often acting in hard to stomach ways. It makes the first game seem light as a daisy.

Now, if that sounds swell to you great, but I don't really need a misery simulator in my life so it loses a couple of points and much as I think the game is in someways a masterpiece I won't replay it, if ever, for a very long time.

Final note - If you check the date of all the negative reviews most were posted on the day of release. It's a 30 hour long game. It's just review bombing because leaks for the story were released on-line and a vocal group of man-children spat their dummies out. Ignore.

Where the game took a downturn for me was when lev and yarra are introduced. They were uninteresting characters and really bogged the story down and made those sections playing as abbey against the scars quite boring. I didnt mind playing as Abbey as much, I felt the worst for owens character, The end of the game was not satisfying, Ellie proceeds to make stupid decision after stupid decision and she honestly ends up almost the villian of the story. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I managed to get into the game unspoiled. And with the outcry after the leaks I suspected that Joel or Ellie gonna die at the end.

The first moments and flashbacks of Ellie and Joel made me tear up. I have waited so long to see more of them and it was wonderful to see them together and play through their memory sequences. It warmed my heart.

The little bit of hope that we might get more of a Ellie and Joel adventure through the whole game were crushed when we had to witness Joel's brutal death.

Sure Abby was driven by revenge but the brutality was what made me wonder what Joel must have done to deserve that. I was really curious to find out what terrible thing he did.
But later we learn that he killed Abby's father. Joel did not beat him to a pulp nor tortured him, he just shot him. So it felt unnecessary to kill Joel like this, I guess they did it to give Ellie (and make the player feel) the kind of anger, hate and revenge seeking that leads Ellie to a very dark place in the end.

The gameplay is great, the environment is beautiful and sometimes creepy, the infected are more scary and I was very often stressed (in a good way) by all the run-for-your-life situations when you got chased by a horde.

I enjoyed Ellie's gameplay most of the time. I cared for Ellie. And I hoped that she will get revenge and find piece. But I also hoped that we would get more than the usual protag kills antagonist at the end.

And when the game switched from Ellie's POV to Abby's and we started to play as Abby I was at first not interested to play through her part. I usually dislike it a lot when I'm forced to play as someone else instead of the protag. But the longer I played with Abby the more I started to like her. And care for her.

You get to play as her for a good while and learn about the fight her group, the WLF has with another group called the scars (seraphites).

After an incident she groups up with two young teens from the Seraphites after they saved her life. The siblings (Yara and Lev) are outcasts and first they are just working together to get out of a life-threatening situation and they part ways after making it out alive. But after leaving the kids, later Abby can't get them out of her head and she goes back to check on them. This is were I started to like her more n more. She turns from a bad to a god person, and puts her own life and place in the WLF into jeopardy to make sure the kids are safe.

The game manages to make you see both, Ellie's and Abby's side of opinion and the further the story went I started to side with Abby more n more.

And here starts where I began to dislike parts of how they went on.

Ellie's path to the dark side makes her unlikable, she was almost killed by Abby but Abby spared hers and Dina's life due to Lev asking her to stop.
The game skips to a year later and we see Ellie has a wonderful life with her girlfriend in a remote farm house.

It's the kids that help Abby become a better person and after having lost every single one of her friends except Lev, Abby and Lev travel to California in hope to find the fireflies where they get captured by some bad slavery group.

Ellie meanwhile can't find piece even tho everyone of the people she wanted to see dead was dead except Abby. Ellie leaves Dina to seek revenge again even though Dina pleads her to forget about Abby and move on.

Playing as Ellie again who managed to track down Abby and Lev and after finding them, almost dead, tied to a cross she feels pity and frees Abby but before she let them go she is battling with herself and loses the intern battle.
She doesn't let Abby and Lev go and wants to fight but Abby refuses to, so Ellie turns so dark that she threatens to kill a defenseless Lev if Abby doesn't fight her.

There was nothing in this game that left me unmotivated except this Ellie vs Abby battle. I didn't wanted to slice Abby with my knife while Abby only had her fists. I didn't wanted to fight Abby at all.

I was not able to connect to this dark side of Ellie. I was fighting with myself to press the QTE when Abby was pleading to stop, I felt sick in my stomach when Ellie drowned Abby and pleaded that she would let go of her. In the end she did and Abby was free to leave with Lev.

Abby deserved her revenge altough the way she took it out was unnecessary. She went through a horrible time on this slavery farm and she was broken when Ellie found and freed her. Abby lost everyone while Ellie still had her people in Jackson, had a girlfriend and a good life after she was spared by Abby in Seattle.

I had prefeered an ending where both Abby and Ellie would have to fight side by side to get out of a life-threatening situation and come to terms and being able to forgive each other instead of how this game ended.

While this game was Ellie's story, half through this game I felt this was Abby's story and both deserved a better ending than what we got.

Getting right to it, I will say this is a good game. Is it 10/10? No. is it 1 or 0/10? Also No.

Getting right to it, I will say this is a good game. Is it 10/10? No. is it 1 or 0/10? Also No.

Firstly - there are too many bad reviews on here because people just didn't like what happened to Joel, or the game is 'Leftist propaganda', or any other number of silly complaints, and honestly speaking, I feel sorry for them. Just because a game didn't give you the story you think you deserved, or if you don't agree with gender stuff or orientation of people because you're too stupid, is not a reason to trash on something 100%. I hope everyone gives this game a fair chance - if you don't like it, that's ok, but least be fair about it. I hope my words seem fair - I played the first right before this as I never had, and while I enjoyed it, it didn't blow me away like so many others, so take that as you will, but I think that gives my opinion a fresh and possibly more neutral stance.

With that out of the way, I will say this about what I liked:

Game play feels very improved. The controls feel tight and responsive, animations are great and fluid. I do feel the AI is much better as well, calling out to each other to circle around and alert others. Not the *best* AI ever, but very good, especially for a stealth game.

Environments are absolute jaw droppers. Beautiful and quite large, well made and intuitive. I do wish there were more open areas like early on, however wasn't really a negative I would take away, just something more I would have liked to have seen, pretty minor.

Enemies are much better, and new ones are damn freaky. Some of the bosses were straight up amazing/terrifying. Even returning ones like clickers feel harder to deal with and more intense.

The big elephant in the room, the story - I will outright say I did in fact like it, but it's definitely not perfect. I'll try not to get into spoilers, but I am saying that even though this is really, REALLY, not a happy story, that doesn't mean it's bad. I think the story that happened, happened for a reason, even if we didn't want it to happen that way. I respect that, and to be honest I think that made me feel a wider range of emotions than if we had gotten the happy 'ellie and joel ride off into the sunset' story everyone keeps complaining we should have gotten. Actions have consequences, and this story is about that. The first tlou was about hope and the relationship joel and ellie built, I think this one is much darker, really about revenge and dealing with grief. Very different, but that doesn't mean that's bad.

Now, leaning more towards the negative, I have this to say:

While I did like the story overall, there were pacing issues that I really didn't like. I think, for me, the timing of some of the flashbacks felt wrong - you'd just have finished something major, you're really into that part of the story, and BAM, flashback that really didn't have much to do with what you were doing. It felt.... off, and very jarring.

Along with that, some parts of the game seemed to drag much more than others. Playing as Ellie? blew through it. But at some point you play as Abby, and whatever your thoughts are about her, her areas just felt.....longer. And not in a good way. Almost at times you kinda just wanted the game to hurry up and get to the next thing. With Ellie the pacing was good, story elements seemed to happen when they should - with Abby, I kept hoping around the next turn something would, but often didn't.

And lastly on the negative side, the characters, more to the point, the new ones. I liked them, that wasn't the issue, however they didn't really do anything with them. You meet and set up these new people, and they just kind of...don't do much with them. I think parts of the story could have been made much better if they had developed these characters more.

All in all, I really did enjoy my time with TLOU2. It's a very different game than the first, and I think a lot of people were angry they didn't get what they were hoping these two characters they loved deserved - I hate to say it though, but that's kind of life. A lot of bad stuff happens to a lot of people that either don't deserve it, or that we love deeply, and that's just how it is. ND told the story they wanted to, and just because we feel angry, upset, or even sad, about the story, that doesn't mean it was a bad one. Combine that with very, very solid gameplay and exceptionally beautiful areas, and you have a really good game.

Please give it a fair shot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'd start off by saying that I was a big fan of the story in the first game and not so much a fan of the game play. My feelings are reversed for this game.

The graphics, sound, voice acting and game play are excelling in TLoU2. Where the game falls short for me is on the story. I wouldn't even say that the story is "bad" it's just not something that resonated with me.

I would have much rather had a Joel/Ellie game than what this story is. I didn't like it when Joel died but it wasn't a deal breaker for me. Playing as Ellie on a revenge tale was perfectly fine for me. However, when you have to play as Abby is when I started to lose interest. Nothing about that 8-10 hours as her made me care about her or like her at all. I just thought it was filler to make the game longer, which it didn't need. They could have ended the game at the end of Ellie's 14 hours and it would have been great. But they continued on and made you suffer through Abby. Then you think the game is over and it would have been fine to end there also but they couldn't do that either. You have to slog through another 2-3 hours to get to an ending that isn't satisfying for anyone. If anything, the "antagonist" in this story gets a better ending. In my opinion, Naughty Dog tried way too hard to go against the grain and subvert expectations with the story.

Both Ellie and Abby were very interesting characters but I have no desire to replay the game again. Definitely one of Sony’s best games this generation but not a classic by default. Expand

Here's the deal: this is not a perfect game, but it does not deserve the brigading and bombing it's getting right now. There are 3 criticisms people have for this game, and only 1 of them is legit. Here are the two faulty criticisms:

    1. It has LGBT values. They're not "in your face," if someone says that, they missed the point. Ellie being into girls is established early to get it over
Here's the deal: this is not a perfect game, but it does not deserve the brigading and bombing it's getting right now. There are 3 criticisms people have for this game, and only 1 of them is legit. Here are the two faulty criticisms:

    1. It has LGBT values. They're not "in your face," if someone says that, they missed the point. Ellie being into girls is established early to get it over with, and comes up occasionally to drive her decisions early game (to accept help from a certain character on her journey). Another character is trans but doesn't go into it. Another character literally avoids asking about it out of respect and realizing it's not the appropriate time. Then they move on. Done.

    2. The "story was bad." It wasn't. It didn't completely blow me away, but it was solid. Not gonna spoil anything, but some people wanted a little too much to see certain characters die horrible deaths on screen. I think the character choices made a lot of sense and shows a lot of growth. A lot of people had issue with some early story choices with Ellie and Joel, but the writing as on the wall. You know it had to go down this way.

THE ONLY REAL CRITICISM: The game is just more The Last of Us. No more, no less. The combat is the same. The dialogue is the same. The characters think and act the same. The game even looks the same (still beautiful and horrible). Nothing new is on display. It's functional, and fun most of the time. The characters are all written well, but at the same level as the first game. No big surprises, no "game of the decade!" twists. Just a solid story about loss, revenge, and pain. That's it. If you like the first one, you'll like the second. If you except the game to open a hole in the sky and deliver a divine message of hope and wonderment: you're looking in the wrong apocalypse.

Game play is vastly improved over the original game. There is the occasional bit of jank, especially around the game's stealth. Luckily this can be circumvented because of the vast and flexible ways in which the difficulty can be tuned to your personal tastes. Also, there's plenty of generous check points if you die or want to try it again.

The story, at a surface level, is a good revenge story. However, scratch any further below that and you'll find a number of fumbles and plot holes you'll need to fill in yourself. The game is also wears out it's welcome at least 5 hours or so from the conclusion of its roughly 30 hour campaign. I feel this is partly from how the story was told, with a definitive half way point definitely exacerbates how long this game feels to play.

    Can definitely recommend it.

    Sorry for my English!!!!

This game is a masterpiece, but it should not be called The Last Of Us. The Last of Us ended at the second hour of gameplay. All negative reviews are talking about terrible plot, but they did not mention perfect work of programmers, designers and musicians. This game does not deserve such a hate. I would give it 9/10, if it wasn't named The Last of Us game.

All negative reviews are talking about terrible plot, but they did not mention perfect work of programmers, designers and musicians. This game does not deserve such a hate. I would give it 9/10, if it wasn't named The Last of Us game. However, they put everything we loved in the Part 1 away and wanted to sell it, as the second part. I really respect the work of Naughty Dog, but this game is not that game that we all were waiting for 5-7 years. I would try to give a score for every aspect of the game.
    Sounds: 10/10
    Animations: 10/10
    Work of programmers: 10/10
    Feeling of guns: 10/10
    Graphics: 10/10
Plot: 6/10 Here I would like to explain. This is the story of the game and nobody can change it, but I'm pretty sure that almost every player would like to change the ending. I would give 8/10 to the plot, if we were given a choice in the ending.
    Gameplay: 10/10
    Atmosphere: 10/10
Characters: 4/10 The Last of Us had such a great success due to its characters. Players felt and understood every character. I don't understand why every character in the second part is so bad. The only characters who were interesting to me were created and taken from the first part of the game. Sometimes I think of the characters from The Last of Us(game I played 7 years ago) and I remember every person and their stories. They all were unique, some of the stories are sad, others are bright, but I keep them in mind after 7 years of playing the game. I am pretty sure that I will replay the first part of this game. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same words about the second part.
Feelings: 5/10 This game is great, but I did not feel very good at some moments of the gameplay. I wanted even to stop playing. I smiled sometimes during the gameplay, but those smiling were referred to the flashbacks to the first part of the game. I did not fell satisfied after playing the second part.

The final verdict: 7-8/10 Yes, that is not what we expected. I took 2-3 points from 10, because of the characters, plot and lack of opportunity to choose the ending. I recommend it for playing for everybody, but you do not have to compare it to the first part. These are two different games, unfortunately, in a bad way.
Guys, please, do not hate and put low scores to this game. Developers spent a lot of time on working, they do not deserve your hate. As I said, this game do not deserve such a low score. Sorry for my English again.

After playing for about 7 – 8 hours you start realizing that the story is really poorly written or too ambitious. They will force you to change characters every know and then and not only that there are too many flashbacks that get old really fast. The gameplay is fun during the first half of the game but gameplay also gets old, you will be doing the same thing over and over and over again and this is: enter a new area press R1 to see who’s in there sneak behind them press square and then stealth kill them (with the same animation every single time), that is the gameplay don’t let them fool you with the trailers they have been releasing where every action looks so fluid and dynamic.
Having said that, the game environments, characters and the animations (facial expressions interactions) look absolutely amazing, truly amazing. Certain scenes really can touch you and make you emotional but as we said as the game progresses the intensity of the story dilutes and between this and the repetitiveness of the gameplay is why you will eventually drop the controller.

Excellent game in pretty much every facet, especially visually and gameplay wise. The story is tough to play through, extremely dark and morally challenging, but I think it was done with good cause and mostly tastefully. I think a lot of gamers are crying over senpai Joel without understanding the deeper meaning of the narrative.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me preface this by saying I adore the first game. Easily in my top 5 games of all time. Which probably means I'm being super harsh on this. Which I am. I loved it, but it felt like a disappointment compared to the first game. Most importantly being, I didn't end up really empathising with Abby. I purposely died as her a few times just because I care way more about Joel and Ellie. Even at the end of the game, whilst liking Abby way more than I originally did, I wanted her to die. I **** loved Joel, and to barely have him in this game sucks. Although that does mean on the rare occasions we did see him, it felt nice and emotional. I get what they were trying to do - I really do. Hey look, that **** that you hated at the start is a person too! And Joel killed her dad! Feel sorry for her! But I just couldn't. Certainly not on the level they wanted me to. In fact, I felt like pretty much every new character we met I just didn't care about. Apart from maybe Owen - I thought he was written nicely. I think the way the game is played is one of the reasons why. In the first game you're Joel and Ellie - bantering throughout. Really helped build up their relationship with fun, witty dialogue. But in this, you're mostly playing as either Ellie or Abby. There are some segments where you're with Jesse, or Dina, or Lev, but they're few and far between. The first game had dialogue that was properly funny too, and the entire game felt like whilst this was a horrible world, there were moments of beauty and hope. This is just bleak, followed by bleak. Skill Up's review compared the tone and characters to the DCU, which I totally agree with. The characters in the first game had heart and character, but in this everyone is the same and just feel a little off.

Graphics, gameplay, all top notch. Super tense, super atmospheric, and really enjoyed it. Zero complaints there, although I am surprised they teased an open world section so early on in the game only for that to be it. I feel like a semi-open world could work pretty well in TLOU if implemented right. New enemies - I get it, but it just felt like a classic sequel move. We need new **** It felt almost anti-lore in the fact we didn't see these infected in the first game, but now here they are. Probably a minor criticism there, as how else are they meant to make a sequel? I would actually say the gameplay sections felt a little too long in places. You would take out a lot of people, only for there to be even more enemies just around the corner. This meant I was a little afraid to use bullets and other consumables as I had no idea if there would be any scavenging later on. I barely used bombs and molotovs. Don't even think I used a smoke grenade once. Which leads me onto:

Pacing. It was completely **** It just felt all over the place, across the entire game. It felt really unfocused. Playing as Ellie for three days only to then have to play as Abby for the same three days, knowing you're not going to find out what happens at the theatre felt like a big **** you. I also felt that Joel dying so early on just ruined the Abby segments as, guess what, I **** hated her. Then the end. My word. I thought California was a real nice change of scenery but at this point you think the game should be over - so it went on for too long. And we meet yet another faction - the Rattlers. What was their deal - slave labour? Was that it? We'd already suddenly met the Wolves and the Scars (which felt a little tacked on for my liking) and then with what, an hour of the game left, let's bring in another. *shrug*

I think my main criticism though is that even though I wasn't overly keen on Abby or her story, it just felt like a lot of things in the story missed the mark. Ellie torturing whoever it was - didn't care for it. I was told this game was super brutal and violent but the camera is on her face the entire time. And she hits her what, three times? Big woop. I hit normal enemies more than that. The sections where you're with the dog (Alice) only to then realise you killed it - again, just didn't care. If Alice doesn't get killed, Ellie does. Again, I completely get what the goal was, it just didn't impact me in the way it should've done.

I read nothing about the game going into it but obviously had heard of the whole scary trans thing. Assumed it was Abby the entire time as she was built like a **** brick **** house (which was weird, but whatever). Obviously you learn towards the end that Lev was a wife or something - but it completely passed me by that he was a she. So no idea what the manbabies online are moaning about. If anything the game didn't talk about it enough.

So there we go. I give it a solid 8/10. I reckon if I hadn't played the first game I would like this way more.

But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
