This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

A game that to a risk! You either love it or hate it. It has its flaws. But i will always respect when games take risks instead of the same dull ”meh” type of stories and endings.

Could have done to more to expand the game mechanically, but clearly the focus was on the incredible acting performances and the technical feats involved in bringing these characters to life. Truly best in class once again, with challenging characters and unique story arcs. Also any idiot complaining about the politics has nothing useful to say lol. The only complaint from the triggered gamergate crowd is, as it always has been, "people that aren't straight white men exist in this game?!!! >:[ Unplayable political nonsense!" Lmao shut up. Expand

One of the most detailed and immersive games I've played. Combat is smooth and brutal, characters are realistic. I take only 1 point away for the story, i personally didn't like the pacing and certain descions for character, but the story is still thought out, realistic and emotional. Highly recommend.

The characters in this game make decisions that people didn't like. And that's what I like about it. It's a fantastic game that explores the complex emotions of humans who grow and change. I think the execution of the story was fantastic this game made me feel things from start to finish. Not to mention just how much content, artistry, and amazing writing this game has.
    Amazing game.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Art design & Graphics (10/10) There isn't much to critic, I personally really enjoyed the art work in this game it was literally flawless. Might even be the best one so far amongst the other games.

Sound & Music (10/10) In my opinion the best part of the game was the musics. They put me through an undescribable emotional wave that I've never experienced before while playing a game so it would not be possible to pass without mentioning the music and I can definitely say the same for the in game sound so thank you Ashley Johnson, Troy Baker, Gustavo Santaolalla and other people whom worked on soundtracks for this amazing experience.

Gameplay (7/10) The reason I gave 7 to the gameplay is, it felt like they didn't change it that much compared to the first game, we get to pass episodes and progress in the game by solving the puzzles (sections) like the first game. Also the shooting mechanics could've been better in my opinion but still it doesn't matter that much for me because I consider this game as an artwork like a movie so no matter how compelling the gameplay is we all get to see the same story and ending, that's why I'm always playing in the easiest mode in these type of games so I get to finish the game not too slow but explore the game through every beautiful detail.

Story (9/10) The reason I left the story for the last is because I think there is a lot to say about it but I'll keep it as short as possible and try my best to criticize without giving spoilers because there are many people who don't play the second game due to this hatred and lynching notion towards the story.

Personally I've enjoyed the story as much as the first game 'cause Part II definitely gives us a better understanding of The Last of Us universe and since it's a sequel to the first game it makes the events before the Part II even more meaningful so this is a great aspect to consider and actually what I think is if we were to play this exact story in the first game in addition to first game's story I think it would've changed everyone's opinions about the Part II because the events are %100 justifiable. I'm not saying that I wouldn't make it any different maybe I would've made it a little bit less tragic but the Last of Us universe itself a tragedy so scriptwriters actually did a good job by giving us a controversial story unlike the first game, otherwise it'd be just a casual story like we get to see %99 of the time in books, movies etc. everyday. Unfortunately in a cruel universe like Last of Us no one should be that lucky to get a happy ending even the protagonist. That's why I can give a solid 9 to the story.

So, The Last of Us Part II was awesome overall, therefore I would definitely recommend.. I'll give (9/10) and I want to say that the hate towards the game and Naught Dog Co. was definitely unnecessary and not fair.

    Thanks for reading.

The level design, graphics, enemy and partner A.I., combat mechanics are top quality. Even if you don't find the story amazing, the way it's told, mixing the right balance of cinematography and game playing, keeps you engaged throughout. And even if you don't like Abby (one of the two protagonists that you play as), Naughty Dog still does characterisation like almost no other; the characters really feel like people

I did think some of the things in the story were too on the nose. For example, both main characters are in a love triangle of their own, one of the ways they made it so you can think 'look! They aren't that different even though one seeks revenge on the other'. But I found this story more interesting than the previous game, and honestly, even though I was prejudiced against Abby at the beginning considering her woeful murder of Joel, I definitely found her half of the game much more interesting than Ellie's.

Cannot relate to the people hurt by Joel's death. I never really connected to him anyway. I did find the premise of the plot lame at first, but playing through it isn't bad.

Mechanically and visually this game is nearly flawless. I felt right at home with the controls after playing the first game on PS3. Some of the controls are a little old (e.g. weapon selection). The only thing that holds this game back is the story and the decision to make the game longer by playing as multiple characters.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU pt 2 is a great game, when you take a step back, everything makes sense. For example, a see a lot of people pissed off that Ellie didn't kill Abby, but this makes sense. She saw that Abby had Lev, and she knew that Abby was to Lev like Joel was to Ellie. I'm not saying that the ending couldn't have been done better, but as to why she spared her, it makes sense. As for people complaining that Joel died and how pissed off they are, that's the point. ND wants you to be pissed off, they want you to be as mad as Ellie is, and it becomes this slow burn of seeing Ellie become a monster, killing tons of humans, all in the name of vengeance, and if anything, it makes Ellie just as bad if not worse than Abby.

As for playing as Abby, this is important. I don't believe ND is trying to get you to feel bad for Abby per se, just trying to humanize her in the same way as Ellie, showing that Abby and Ellie are more similar than different in some ways. It shows that they both are human, but also vengeful people, and that they are both awful people in general.

I bought it but only played a few hours before I uninstalled the game because things didn't go exactly the way I (along with the fan base who childishly review bombed this game) wanted.

After the ps5 update came out I decided to give it a try again with an open mind. Although story pacing is not perfect, I really did enjoy and fluidity of the gameplay, the beautiful graphics decided that overall I really enjoyed the game.

The story was very bleak, and brutal but I felt in encapsulated the world of the last of us several years after the first game. I'd say if you're even slightly interested in playing part II, give it a try and see for yourself whether or not you like it.

(but for real rating a game ZERO is ridiculous lol, sometime the story doesn't always go the way you for the protagonist but there is no denying that this is a polished game) Cheers and thanks for reading :)

Their conversations, the way they constantly come from the back .. It’s difficult and how it was ..

I'll go through the story a little. I liked it, and you will. True, starting from the second half of the game, such empathy is not seen as before. Playing for Ellie is much more morally pleasant than playing for an inflated closet - Abby. True, Abby has a better weapon.

In any case, the game is above all praise. We can only say - "Thank you for your work, naughty dog!".

Gameplay is improved from Part 1. It's challenging, and lets you play how you want: shoot them all down or pick them apart one-by-one via stealth.

The graphics are gorgeous. I loved walking through the zones and admiring the foliage.

It's not as terrifying, but maybe because I'm used to the world in Part 1.

The story was pretty crazy. The game starts off with a bang and gives you little breadcrumbs as you search for the truth. It depicts themes of forgiveness, duty, hope, tragedy, loss, sacrifice... basically essences of humanity. It's a heartbreaking story, but at the same time it highlights the human spirit and how it can keep going even in Hell On Earth.

There are two issues that people bring up with this game:

    1) I think people are overreacting to the LGBT themes. If the main character is gay, she'll be friends with LGBT people. It doesn't seem to be a focus point in the story, but the audience is going to focus in on what it wants to.

    2) The drama that the game starts off with is heartbreaking. You can't believe it just happened. It's unthinkable. You try to piece together why any of it happened through the remainder of the game. The motives are unclear for so long. You go through what the protagonist goes through. You see it from their view. You see the antagonist's view. It makes complete sense why. This isn't Marvel where Spiderman is invincible and always thwarts the enemy. This is a multi-dimensional story that reflects real life. Your friends can be killed in real life and there is no amount of grief that will bring them back.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think this game is a masterpiece. And as good as it is, every masterpiece has a some flaws. The flaws with the this game are few and far between but definitely worth calling out. Although I’m extremely satisfied with the narrative, the tone, the pacing etc, it’s the order of events played out in the story that are the problem. It is extremely hard to empathize with Abby for many people if you watch her kill so many people and spend the first half of the game chasing her. You cant be expected to empathize and understand her if you play her side over halfway through the game.

Then there’s Jessie who was a completely underutilized character. He dies in an insulting way and never reached his full potential. With those few things out of the way, I can’t begin to express how good this game is.

The visuals are stunning and gorgeous. I feel like I really am in a ravaged and destroyed country. I think the gameplay has many improvements over the first game with the inclusion of the dodging and slightly more pleasing UI and better weapon upgrading. New weapon types and enemy types too. Honestly apart from a few story flaws I cant complain about much. Easily a 9-9.5/10

Wish I didn't get all the spoilers though, but even knowing some major plot turns, this game hit me like no other game did in years. And that epilogue...

While the story is something controversial, and you should be prepared for it, the other aspects such as gameplay, level design, annimations and so on were undoubtedly top-notch.

The soundtrack worth to be mentioned explicitly. Mr. Santaolalla and his co-authors did that thing again and did it better. Unbroken and Allowed To Be Happy are tearing my heart apart at this very moment.

My recommendation would be to go play it now if you didn't already. It is something else

And I sincerely don't understand why anyone would put 1 or 2 as their score. Wth? This game doesn't deserve it one single bit.

The breathtaking visuals stand tall amongst many "next gen" entries, and the layer of polish that comes from a 6-year long development process is much appreciated and apparent. Exploration is improved upon with huge, sweeping areas that contain all kinds of collectibles and resources to gather for your next combat encounter. Combat itself feels phenomenal, with immense layers of depth and freedom for any specific playstyle. The soundtrack is once again perfectly atmospheric and fitting, serving as an extension of the music found in the first game. Where this game fails to be a true masterpiece is in its narrative. This is a disheartening, disgusting, and unnecessary story that should have never been told. The Last of Us stood on its own two feet as a perfect gem, not needing a sequel or any more content. Each character from the first title has been stripped of their soul and humanity, leaving this game feeling hollow and empty by the end rather than climactic and beautiful. While I am disappointed by the choices made by the producers and developers, I would be a liar if I said that this was truly a horrible game that was lacking in any other aspect. The Last of Us goes out with a whimper after an amazing ride. I hope Part III never comes. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazing game with the WORST CONCLUSION EVER MADE IN FICTION. Everyone crying about Joel dying in the first 2 hours should honestly stop crying and start looking at the big picture lol. Joel had it coming since he killed a literal whole army just for 1 little girl. No matter how much we all like him, he was in the wrong and his actions had consequences. It also gave Ellie a pretty good revenge story for us to follow (which just gets thrown away in the end like nothing). I also didn't mind the fact that we had around 8 hours of Abby gameplay. I was absolutely determined to scatter that woman in pieces, but playing her and seeing her and Lev's side of the story was actually still really enjoyable and intresting, untill she absolutely annihilated Ellie and her friends which made absolutely no sense to me since she had every single advantage over Abby except raw strenght. Also why did we had to still specifically had to play that part?? That neither made any sense whatsovever. The last 10 minutes of the game were probably the worst 10 minutes out of any game i've ever played. Ellie was 3 seconds away from finally achieving the goal she's been thriving for for a whole year, and because of some dumb 1 millisecond flashback, she just lets her go???? How does that make any sense?? why did she even leave the farm in the first place then?? Why did she even leave JACKSON in the first place??? Its like the flashback told her that Joel wouldn't want her to do this or sum, when that would be the literal opposite. I enjoyed watching everyone die like the **** they were ( especially that stupid mexican who spit on Joel) but how are you going to kill and torture hundreds of people and let the ONLY person you were after go after she killed almost everyone you cared about and annihilated you TWICE? Nothing, and absolutely nothing made sense in the last 2 chapters. I could probably point out a lot more about it, but im not going to.

The positives of this game are the absolutely stunning graphics (def the best graphics ive ever seen for a game), the story itself, the main protagonist and main antagonist and the fun and improved gameplay. This game was better than TLOU in every single aspect except ending. I've never raged so much in a game while still enjoying it the best way i could. I also liked how the game just liked to toy with your feelings with killing Joel in the beginning and throwing those flashbacks at us. It just made you feel so much in the moment and makes you feel like you're an actual character experiencing whatever feelings Ellie is experiencing, no other game has ever done that in my opinion. It also just strengthed our motive to kill Abby and her friends .Overall i would still say that this game is an absolute masterpiece and still one of the best games ive ever played regarding the ending

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just bought the game for $10 (PSN Spring Sale). I haven’t picked up a controller since 2016, and have been busy with life so I thankfully missed all the hateful discourse surrounding this game. I did however overhear a couple of people at work mention something about Joel dying when the leaks came out and while I did find it sad, I was only mildly intrigued. I mean, it didn’t take a lot to arrive at the conclusion that someone from the first game must have killed him, and I guessed that it would be someone from the Fireflies. I was surprisingly close, too. I love TLOU, I love Joel and Ellie’s bond, although I am perhaps one of the few people who was very disappointed at his actions at the end, although I did understand why he did what he did. I wish his character hadn’t been written to end up being in theory, evil, because that meant the recovery of his “humanity” came at a very, very high cost. Anyway, I digress. I bought a PS4 just so I could play TLOU Remastered - I actually only have 2 other games, Witcher 3 and DA:I). Just as before, I took time from work these past few days just to play TLOU Part II, as I simply don’t have time. The graphics are amazing, MOST of the characters are compelling, but I think the game could have been a tad shorter. Maybe compress Ellie’s arc, and remove the early part of the first day of Abby’s. Because the game is so long, also getting so dark and violent, honestly if it weren’t for Lev, that courageous, unrelentingly kind boy, I wouldn’t have been able to keep playing without taking a break. The narrative does require a little bit of reflection - and I would even recommend some people to take a break after Ellie’s day 3. Take a break. Breathe. Go out for drinks. Hug your mom, dad, siblings, or whoever. Give your partner a kiss. Most people will need it, I’m sure. I am now on my second play through and I am slowly realizing that the story is much, much easier to understand the second time around. It’s as if Joel saying “I’d do it all over again” was some sort of sign. So yeah, this became longer than I had hoped, all I will say is buy the game (or rent it, or borrow a copy from a friend). And please, don’t let some random person, no matter how influential they may be, tell you whether you should play a game or not. It should be up to you. And if you have finished the game with an open mind and still end up not liking it, then that is perfectly fine! There are things that are objectively OK that you’re allowed to subjectively not like. For example, I recognize how a lot of people like MCU movies, Star Wars, etc. but I am just not a fan and while I will probably not rewatch any of those movies, I will also not say that the movies are BAD just because I didn’t like them. Anyway. Get this game. Play it. Meditate on it. You might just end up realizing that all the hate here is eerily one of the things that the game is trying to talk to you about. Expand

While I will not spoil the story, I will allude to my take on the overall tone of the plot and make reference to a gameplay change that happens mid-way through, so I leave it up to you if that's too much.

    You’ve been warned.

The Last of Us 2 is easily one of the most divisive games of all time. It makes some bold choices in its story telling that many do not like; however, the greatness of gameplay is often lost in this debate. In terms of gameplay, the game builds on everything the first game did well. The Last of Us was fun, but the story and enemy design did a lot of the heavy lifting. This time around, there is more of game worth playing, even if you don't care for the story. There is a point in the game where the character stats reset, and, again, this is divisive. Contrary to how some have put it, you are not redoing everything you’ve already done; however, it’s not a totally new gameplay experience either. It changes up some skills and craftable items, but that’s about it. If you think this will annoy you, keep that in mind. For what it's worth, I barely thought twice about this until I saw so many people being upset by it.

Now, on to the story, which is much harder to discuss spoiler free, so I am going to try and be a bit objective.

I think you owe it to yourself to play this game and formulate your own take on its story. In the end, Sony and Naughty Dog are taking big risks on this series. It paid off in the first game and was (nearly) universally praised by critics and fans. This time, it's is far more divisive. Like the first game, the story is not meant to be satisfying. It's meant to be true to the characters and world in which they exist. It's a credit to the writers of the sequel that it never feels like they are trying to outdo the original. They're just trying to continue the story. They make some very bold decisions here, and these do overflow into the game’s design and create scenarios you may not enjoy, and I do not believe you are meant to. It was my opinion that these situations felt organic to the story, and, especially the characters, and not forced. If you want a game that makes you feel comfortable all the time, this is not the game for you.

As for the ending, I understand a lot of the criticism there, but I was more ok with it than most; however, your mileage will vary depending on how attached or unattached you are to characters. You experience with narratives outside of video games will likely influence your thoughts as well.

In summary, I think this good game for every gamer to play as you can have fun while having your expectations challenged. If you go in with this expectation, you'll likely walk away with a more positive opinion than most.

It is a miracle that we get to have a stories like this in AAA titles. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, appreciate what you can, while you can. I am concerned gamers will start pushing back on challenging stories, just as movie goers did with film. It's quite likely that, one day, all AAA game stories will be as formulaic, predicable, and full of fan service as the modern movie blockbuster.

The gameplay is great, so it is the soundtrack and the character development: when you kill a NPC, you’re killing someone that has a name and friends, and it is shown when you play with that another character (that I’ll hide the name because it can be a spoiler for some people that didn’t see nothing about the game yet), but I think the best part of the game is the feeling it gives you in some moments.

The game should be a 10, but I chose to rate it as a 9 because of the final part, where we face a different group, but the game doesn’t tell anything about them, and it (the final part) lasts less than it should. But, after that, the cutscenes are masterpieces, making you rethink about all Ellie’s choises.

It’s bigger, crisper and stunningly well realised and fully immersive as a result. The music and understated acting captures the tone of the original and whilst the story will come down to personal preference, the characters are naturally diverse without feeling forced and are well animated. From a technical point of the view the game is a masterpiece.

The story itself is very dark and violent and forces you to change your perspective throughout and your ability to get on board with this and understand what’s being asked you may affect your overall enjoyment. I’m personally on board with most of the creative choices they made here but I do think structurally the way they got there occasionally doesn’t land as well as it could. As a result the games structure is both a strength and also biggest weakness.

Part II is an action adventure with stealth elements. If you’ve played the first game then this won’t be new to you and you know what to expect. Moments of quiet, character driven exploration can give way to stealth encounters, fire fights or even chase sequences. The gorgeous visuals, sound effects and lack of music often makes this an extremely tense and nerve shredding experience and some of the action set pieces can feel appropriately chaotic. The game is also very cinematic and in this regard is very much equal with its predecessor as the pinnacle of cinematic video gaming. Whilst the game generally isn’t open world you do have the option to explore the areas around you and frankly exploration is key as your run through will benefit as you scavenge supplies and craft weapons and other support items. If there’s a criticism to be had with some of the gameplay elements then it would be that the camera doesn’t always position itself right especially in stealth encounters.

Overall this is an impressive continuation from the Last of Us. A technical masterpiece for me no question and whilst structurally it doesn’t land every note, the story lands many notes that I am fully on board with an applaud. The graphics, sound design and gameplay makes this one of the most immersive video gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Be mindful of the hordes of fake negative reviews but also be careful for the handful of fake positive reviews. For me this is definitely a game worth experiencing.

So I've beaten this game twice now, and while it's not a "masterpiece" as IGN called it, it's certainly a solid game and one of the best PS4 games out there. The graphics, controls, voice acting, and gameplay are all solid. I enjoyed playing as Ellie, but honestly I enjoyed playing as Abby more. The f*ck tards out there bashing this game because they killed off you know who, or the lesbian part of the story between Ellie and Dina, honestly you're all f*cking morons. My only gripes with the game are parts of the story are poorly written, boring and cheesy, and the gameplay, while fun for the most part, was kind of "been there, done that" as well. 8/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Part 1 - Rant

I have deliberately and actively avoided any and all previews, reviews, spoilers and everything else dealing with this game until I played it through completely, to not become biased or spoiled. Because of that I did not know what to expect at all really, it was a long time since I played through the first TLOU. Owing to this I was really surprised to see all the negative reviews for this game when I finally checked them out on YouTube and Metacritic, which mainly focuses on the story and how bad it is. Many reviews also calls the story woke, SJW-bull****, politicized et.c. and I just don't get that. I have understood that there has been some controversy between Naughty Dog and users where ND has tried to silence previews and leaks, and also some deliberate disinformation but I haven't read up on it in great detail. One example is a number of reviewers are griping about the fact that you have to kill guard dogs in the game. I mean come on, it's a game set in a very broken and hostile post apocalyptic environment where it is kill or be killed, you kill most everything and everyone in the game.

    Part 2 - Review

Right away, you are met with an extremely beautiful game. Some cutscenes in particular could almost be mistaken for scenes from a movie. The scenery is breathtaking and I just marveled at the beauty of it all and wanted to explore every detail of this world. You are introduced to Joel and Ellie in their new settlement where they live and thrive amongst lots of other people, patrolling the surrounding areas for infected and generally seem to have a good life in general. As the story unravels though, you realize that not all is good between Joel and Ellie and that he hasn't been truthful to her about what exactly happened and why, with the Fireflies at the hospital when he saved her. The beginning of the game is really sweet and calm, but this is soon changed when you're introduced to an unknown man and woman watching the settlement from afar, discussing luring someone out. It's fairly obvious that they're talking about Joel or Tommy.
After some patrol mission the woman is saved by Joel and Tommy and this leads to Joel being killed in front of Ellie in the most brutal way by the woman he saved, who we now know as Abby, a member of the WLF and a former Firefly. This is a turning point for Ellie of course, since the game henceforth is about exacting revenge for Joel.
Halfway trough the game Ellie and Abby meet in a stand off and the player is suddenly made to play Abby instead. This seems to be a huge gripe for most players, and it was for me too at first, but then I realized that it was kinda interesting to see the other side of the story, what made Abby tick and why was she so hell bent on killing Joel. I did not enjoy playing through all of Seattle again though, I think that they could have found another timeline for Abby somehow, but I get why, it's logical.

The plot is generally well written in my opinion and serves its purpose. The game sadly becomes quite repetitive, with all the little quests that must be done, and everything is always so far away with immense amounts of hurdles to overcome, even for the smallest of tasks.
The game is also extremely linear, but this is okay since the story is the central piece here, not being able to sandbox around in a huge world.

The crafting system for upgrading weapons and skills I think works fairly well. Not very advanced but it serves its purpose, and instead of getting bogged down with minute details and stats and such, the focus of the game is again the story.

The fighting mechanics are fairly simplified but sufficient I think. The so-called challenges for getting heavy doors open and what have you are a token though. Simply hold the triangle button down and everything goes well. The same goes for fighting off enemies that have you in their grip, mash square and you're all right. This I think could have been done in a more complex way to make the player actually work for success and have a harder time. Or they could have done away with it completely and just made a cutscene instead. As it is now it's just redundant and boring.

The game finally ends with Abby and Ellie meeting again and Ellie first saving Abby instead of killing her, and then suddenly making a 180 and demanding that she fights her. Ellie once again spares Abby and they go their separate ways. Ellie returns home to discover that she has lost everything. Her house is empty, save for a guitar that Joel gave her, which she can no longer play properly since Abby bit off two of Ellies fingers. It's a really sad ending to a sad game and I think it's a correct decision to not end the game on a happy-go-lucky note. It's a dark world where everybody struggles to survive and it seems a more plausible situation if this was a real scenario, rather than humanity suddenly living in peace with one and other. It's horrible, it's gut wrenching, and I love it.

The original felt grey. It was about flawed people trying to help and getting sucked into a much bigger dilemma. Very Half-Life or in particular Half-Life 2, where the world is authoritarian and everything is terrible, but you fought on.

The original title is awful, but in a way that felt real. There is reasoning that feels solemn, and it feels like the ending makes sense.

The sequel is angry. It wants you to see the torture of someone that did nothing of the sort, (to these people) as realistic, then later view that in a different light. You cannot create visceral imagery then expect it to be forgotten.

If there were a prequel to this, if we had the chance to give any care to these people it could have changed. However, it is a heavy-handed approach to forcing a new set of characters into the series. It is required to care and by the end I did. I did not want them to die and it was very self-reflective.

I cared slightly about these people, but they did bad things, almost none of them are as redeemable as the end of the first game. It just doesn't hit the same peak, and while it is a master craft in acting and technical design, it just misses the mark the first game created on that mountain.

The game is also full of truly intense encounters and set pieces, making for numerous exhilarating moments throughout. All this combines to make for a great video game, but it’s not without its issues.

First of all the game is a good five hours too long, and this could easily have been trimmed from the middle of the game without losing anything of note. For me personally however the biggest issue is the complete disconnect between the gameplay and the message the developers seem intent on telling through the narrative. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s great to see writers attempting something more interesting than ‘good guys Vs bad guys’, but when you’re killing upwards of a hundred people throughout the course of the game (and it’s undeniably fun to do so!) it’s hard to take the messages about violence and revenge seriously. This issue is further magnified by the fact that the player isn’t allowed any choice as to how the story plays out, and as both Ellie and Abby, I often found myself having to carry out actions I simply didn’t want to. The final scene on the beach in particularly just left me feeling uncomfortable…

So, after all the hype and controversy we’re left with a fantastic video game that just bit off a little more than it (or perhaps any AAA video game) could chew in terms of storytelling.

I absolutely loved the first Last of Us, the store hit home for me, and I enjoyed the gameplay, environments, graphics and of course the characters Joel and Ellie. Was it a 10, no but near enough for ME. There is always issues like having to play it on a **** console for one, **** hardware that impacts frames and forces you to use a control system that makes aiming feel like you're trying to target a moving object with a fishing rod. But that aside it was amazing.

How do I feel about The Last of Us 2? It is basically the same as the first one, graphics and environments are great, gameplay is almost unchanged. The characters..... well half the game is about characters we dont know, and the other half the characters we love but they are different. Now that is somewhat understandable as their experiences have changed them as they would a real person and you learn why throughout the game. I enjoyed the story telling, even if I did not like the new characters, I didn't hate them but I just had no connection. The flashbacks for Joel and Ellie were probably the best parts. Still hated playing it on console, the frame drops and ****ty controller is still there and frustrating in those times where quick reactions would have helped.

Overall this is not a ZERO and its definitely not a TEN, dont know what these critics are smoking, need to have a long hard look at their integrity. Is it a GREAT game, no, but its enjoyable and Im glad I played it.

Criticisms regarding a couple of shock moments & the set up for them felt largely unwarranted to me. By the end of the game they are re-covered, clarified and work and serve as a necessary powerful catalyst to the plot.
But the game is beautiful, enjoyable, tense, bleak as all hell as we'd expect following the first game & tells a powerful (albeit not revolutionary) story of all-consuming hatred & the inevitable totality of sacrifice in the pursuit of revenge. And it tells it well. Characters felt real &, a few motivational hickups aside, were believable & well rounded.
It stuck in my head, I was replaying segments in my mind days later and am still moved by it. I'm keen to replay it already.

For the narrative, I am surprised at the level of controversy it has created, and I have to wonder what many players were expecting, without asking to be pandered to. I enjoyed the direction the game took, and thought it was clever to essentially split the game into two distinct parts. It gave me much more game-play than I thought I would get for the $60 I paid.

The biggest weakness for me was the writing and story-telling. In my opinion, the characters did not get a chance to grow as much as they should have, considering events that occur throughout. Although I am glad these characters are not free from the consequences of their actions, its hard to say any of them really learned a lesson. This results in an ending that feels bleak and hopeless, almost just for the sake of feeling bleak and hopeless.

Despite enjoying the large amount of game-play, the story felt like it was dragging towards the end, and it almost felt like their were several good moments to wrap things up, only to fake out the player and keep things going on and on, only end a moment that is particularly emotionally difficult to stomach. This could have been fixed by either ending maybe 30-60 minutes sooner, or 30-60 minutes even later. Even if just to give the player a sense that a lesson was learned and these characters are not beyond redemption for their choices.

Despite feeling let down by the ending, it did not sour what was overall very enjoyable experience. All other important aspects of a video game were present: Graphics, Game-play, Music.

I do intend to play again on New Game+, and seriously hope their is a third (and final) installment.

It is almost the same gameplay as in the previous one with some improvements, so if you liked the first you should be good with this one as well. So,
Graphics - 10/10 - The game looks amazing as you could expect, the animations both in the cut scenes and the in-game are great.

Sound - 10/10 - Great ambient sounds which gets you into the atmosphere, weapon shots and reloads sound amazing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Having read a lot of reviews for this game; I think some people need to remember that it is, after all, only a video game. Admittedly it’s the sequel to a masterfully made original, but still not of earth shattering importance. It’s not a “0” nor is it a “10”. I believe it is a good enjoyable game but not as excellent as the original. This is a common phenomenon. With the possible exception of The Godfather Part 2, how often is the sequel not as good as the original masterpiece?

I have been wracking my brain to try and work out what exactly is wrong with this sequel. I think the main issue is the disconnect between the actual gameplay and the story concepts. The game play glorifies murder. For example, there are no non lethal takedown, no ability to avoid conflict with all the uninfected enemies and some extremely brutal death animations. This is not a criticism as many video games do the same thing. I for one really enjoyed the virtual blood bath that makes up the majority of the game! However, many of the cut scenes and story concepts try and portray the opposite by Illustrating the negative side of violence and revenge. During such cut scenes, I found myself thinking “yeah, yeah - when can I get back to the slaughtering?” The actions of Abby and Ellie during some of the cut scenes just did not ring true. They seemed dishonest as if the characters are pretending to be sickened by the violence but can’t wait to get back to the murdering. I think this creates too much of a disconnect and does not make the characters believable or relatable.

In addition, efforts made to expound the story concepts and explain all the character arcs made the game over long. I felt it should have ended sooner, perhaps when Abby let’s Ellie go after the fight in the theatre.

Having said all that, it’s still an enjoyable, action packed and excellently animated experience.

I was initially the same, "the story is ruined", "no not joel!" but you HAVE to play through it all to "get it" my only gripe is the clunky narrative, bad pacing and finally...the ending.

There was really no need for the last fight. You actually end up saving Abby. Should have left it there. Looking back, it would have made much more sense to have Ellie actually save Abby, even on a kind of "If anyone is going to kill you it's me!" and expand the beautiful California maps and have a whole section where Ellie truly saves her (you can kill Lev, don't care about him he can have died on the beach for more "Abby" player sentiment) but to have taken her back to her boat to recover, then protect her would have been far better a compelling story, and have them even work together to survive. And maybe...just maybe have Abby find remorse (not for killing Joel) for the way she killed him. Then have them go their separate ways.

Also no need for the damage to the hand ;) it came over as a really nasty cheap gimmick. Again Drukmann drops the ball, as she already lost everything. Or at the least make the fight (there really didn't need to be one, Abby let Ellie go on 2 separate occasions) an option you can choose, and if you choose to fight Abby you CAN kill her. But I think we might be seeing more of Abby and Lev.

Hope there's a Part III and I hope they bring back Abby. I actually loved her character (would have liked ND to have fleshed her out a bit more) so Neils magic certainly worked on me...somewhat, great job all round, story needed to be better, more fleshed out characters because I really didn't care about any of them tbh. But even with it's jumbled narrative and cheap gimmick shock (come on Neil you can be better than that) the absence of Bruce Straley is really felt.

I gave the game a fair 5: Only because the story was lacking and the ugly ending I thought was unnecessary. Having Ellie playing that song, with her hand intact and THEN leaving the guitar and walking away would have been for a much better ending.

Like I said, Neil Druckmann is a beautiful genius...almost.

edited: raised the score to 8

This game is unquestionably an A+ stellar achievement in game building. The world environment, enemies and behavior, and visuals are stunning.

The game play is smooth and almost never infuriating (haha) - seriously though, very tight gameplay. The argument can be made it is too much on rails, but it is NOT a sandbox game, I mean this is Naughty Dog - what do you expect?

The real divide here is with the characters actions and motivations and I was totally on board the hater train. I didn't get it - I hated it as one point. I hated myself for playing it. Until the last frame of the last scene I was conflicted in this way. It all changed for me that final scene. I now cannot WAIT for the sequel #3 to be made... hopefully it is to be made. No spoilers, but if you are on the fence, play this game.

At the very least you will understand what it means to really be made to feel something by a game, and who wouldn't say that is a great and lofty goal for any media entertainment?

    A SPOILT MASTERPIECE

After 34 hours of gametime I completed the game, having explored plentifully in search of collectibles and resources and soaked up all the cutscenes. Let me start by saying this is a great game, despite the leaks and the childish review bombing, this game is great.... however it isn’t perfect. So lets begin:

Firstly, the graphics are amazing probably as good as or better than anything else we’ve seen on PS4. Whether it’s the lighting or the detailed scenery or how characters look when its raining etc. It just looks stunning. The facial animations of characters is really on point too smirks, smiles, grimaces all seem to be made at the right time and look really realistic.

The next thing I want to point out as a positive is the combat. It builds on from the solid foundations of the first game but goes further. The new weapons are nice, the way you can crawl around in the grass in stealth and be a silent hunter is cool and the way in which we can also get into brutal close quarters combat, dodging and then striking with brutal ferocity.

Another thing I loved is the level of suspense during many parts of the game, navigating dark corridors, trying to stock up and preserve ammo for when that next infected jumps out the wall and makes your heart start racing. For me that’s one of the best parts of the game and I’m sure on the higher difficulties proves really challenging and entertaining.

Finally, one of the really good things about the game is the cinematics. I always found them welcome and worked well with adding to the story. Also I’m not sure if they’re classed as cinematics as such but parts outside or normal gameplay, like a certain car chase/escape had an uncharted-like feel, it was really intense and worked well. QTE’s were also used well in situations like grappling with infected or trying to escape through doors, they added to the drama nicely.

Now, onto the negative and it’s a pretty major one. The storyline, particularly in the second half of the game, isn’t up to scratch. One of the issues I had to begin with was due to the developers choosing to jump around in time (sometimes by a day or sometimes way longer using flashbacks). I struggled to keep focus on what was happening. Secondly, I felt that despite new characters & groups of people emerging, these weren’t really used to develop the story and ended up feeling like filler. I was anticipating things that might happen and they never did. It became apparent to me as the game progressed it was heading down a very narrow tunnel, limiting itself to its core theme of revenge/vengeance. Also travelling to my next destination started to feel a little more tedious, probably because I was becoming increasingly desperate for parts of the plot to come together to pave the way for a new direction... and they never did. Ultimately as the final scenes played out, I felt very little, almost empty, I thought to myself “oh is that it”. I felt very detached from the main characters. I felt so much more could have been done. What was I meant to think and feel? It was a dissatisfying end to a game that looks and plays so damn well. Worth playing for sure because everyone is gonna interpret the story differently and the rest of the game is close to perfect. It’s an unusual game to review, but ultimately it’s a spoilt masterpiece. 7.5/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've just completed the game. And the more I think about it, the more I think the story succeeded in it's main point. And the main point isn't the one some others are referring to, that violence begets violence or that revenge isn't healthy - plenty of other stories have already done that. It's main point, imho, is that there aren't any good guys or bad guys.
I am hoping the combat is improved by some patches though.

All of the zero scores here on this are ridiculous. I understand that many don't like the story, but to say that's the only bad aspect and ignore everything else for a total zero score is stupid!
I'm still playing this, so I will give it an 8 with a possible future update when I'm finished. Love the graphics, gameplay improvements from Part 1, and I'm really liking the changes to skill

I will say that I have been a little let down with how Ellie is written/performed so far - too dour and moody compared to part 1, and I don't completely agree that just because she's older that explains it all; some of that feistiness should have been more of an inherent trait, imo.
Anywho, looking forward to finishing this. And the social injustice warriors leaving zero score reviews officially suck!

As is expected from this company, the game looks stunning and is immaculately polished. The gameplay feels smooth and adds a few layers to what we saw in the first game, but still sticks to its structure of "Find your way from point A to point B while dealing with enemies and gathering resources" with a few storyline sections sprinkled in with objects to interact with and snippets of conversations to have with your companions. They also took the lessons they learned from "Uncharted: The Lost Legacy" and added quite a few large open areas to explore filled with loads of optional collectibles, puzzles and story tidbits. Funnily enough, the game also has set pieces on par with the Uncharted series, despite this game's subtler storytelling.

Speaking of which... One of the best elements of Naughty Dog's games are their stories, and The Last of Us had their best story to date. In Part 2 the team made some very risky choices which clearly haven't gone down well with many fans.
The game's main theme is the endless cycle of violence the main characters find themselves in and how hard it is for them to break out of. Sadly, this is obvious from very early on in the game, meaning at least the first half of the plot becomes extremely predictable (and at some specific moments, strangely anticlimactic). Then the game throws a twist at us clearly meant to make us empathise with a particular character, and though at first it felt jarring, they did eventually manage to sell me on the idea.
It's a strange feeling, knowing that your characters are making bad decisions and forcing you to go along with them, knowing the best thing you could do for these people is to stop playing. Mashing the "attack" button and thinking "I don't want to do this... Stop making me do this." It's a feeling few games have given me and yet this game took it to the limit. Is that good? It didn't feel good. Maybe that was the point, but if so... is it an experience I want to have? As the credits rolled I was satisfied with how the story played out overall, but I did feel conflicted in many ways. It was probably a few hours too long and could've done with some additional editing. The gameplay loop also became repetitive hours before it was done. That being said, I applaud Naughty Dog for taking risks, even if they didn't all work out too well.

Tech wise and on the gameplay front this game is a step up from part 1. The story is where it falls short.
The story is somewhat weirdly paced and is telling 1 and a half stories. They could have cut the game after the first climax at 90% and wrap it in a nice resolution, but then they restart it and are leaving some things in an unsatisfying way.
Maybe they wanted the player to feel

Shoutout to all the speedrunners who post a score to a 20-hour game after 10 hours.
It's just silly. I don't even support the game, but seeing "grown" men fighting over a game score is just downright hilarious.

This game takes its concept a bit too seriously to provide enjoyment at the same rate as other popular games. The reviews on this game are OUT OF CONTROL, and I really don't see what all the commotion is about so far. Are misogynists/incels upset with strong female/LBGTQ+ protagonism? Did Naughty Dog pull an SJW with the story somewhere? I haven't reached any such controversial part of the story yet, and while I don't want spoilers, I don't plan on finishing this game soon because I am at a *really* slow part of the game right now, and I don't know why, but playing this game makes me feel a bit groggy. It's not that there isn't enough action or drama in the game; I think the problem lies in its realism-aspect spacing out the action and drawing-out the world-building/atmosphere too much.

I admit I *used* to hold misogynistic views, but I don't hold them anymore; it no longer bothers me to see strong female protagonists fighting societal norms, though, I think a part of me is still depressed and has not yet completely accepted that these things are OK. If you're thinking about playing this game, it's best to be completely over these kinds of things, because it feels like this game rubs it in your face at times. This game went from playing as an ex-marine badass father to a strong, fiercely-independent lesbian woman in her 20-somethings. These characters have *completely* different socio-political demographic overlaps (outside of the group of people who are fine-with and can enjoy both.) I feel like the misogynistic/incel fans who liked the first game for the wrong reasons (perceived themes of male dominance, white supremacy, among other unscrupulous ideas) came to the sequel carrying their same socio-political expectations, and that must be one of the reasons why the user-reviews on this game are so polarized.

One thing I don't understand at all is the fact that the professional critics are giving this game an aggregate score of 96/100. That score is the territory of some of the best video games ever made, and while The Last Of Us 2 isn't terrible, I think it's definitely not one of the best games ever made. Let's be honest here: TLOU2 is a solid 85/100. Not terrible; in fact pretty good but not one of the all-time bests either.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
